December 22, 2024 - Msg 120389: Oh, G-F, you arent the only one with "llergics". Let me tell you all what happened to me last night.
I was in the living room alone. Sean was at a party, Bruce was in bed early because he planned an early fishing trip, Erin was out taking little Mari out of town to see Christmas lights so it was a peaceful evening at home, just me and the dogs. I decided to open the archives and read my old Mayberry Christmas story from 2021. I read some of the comments from Asa and Romeena and got a little choked up. I then decided to walk out to the mailbox because no one had gotten the mail that day and I wanted to see if I had gotten Charlotte's christmas card. It was one of those rare cold, clear, low humidity nights here in south texas and King and I strolled up the long driveway to the road, looking at the neighbor's christmas lights and searching the night sky for stars. It was crystal-clear and still. So beautiful. I pulled the mail out of the box and there was Charlotte's card. Once back inside the house, I stopped at the kitchen counter and opened the card. When I saw what was inside, I stood there in the kitchen with King staring up at me and just cried. I boo-hooed. lol I really miss Romeena. She was a mentor, an advisor, and the best kind of friend to me for over 20 years. You just don't get over losing someone like her very easily. Anyway, thank you Charlotte. You just don't know what it meant to me.
Also, when I went to my little white church this morning (I am going to start calling it All's Saints church because it looks so much like it), when I sat down, there was a lady in the pew behind who looked so much like Lanni I had to do a double-take. Maybe we will become friends. Her name was Penny.

Well, been wracking my brain and making lists to be sure I have everything done by Christmas. It is upon us! Got to finish up some computer work and then finish a baby quilt for Zach's coming edition (Baby Johnny). So now, I will have Charlie and Johhny to love and make things for.

Love and peace to all,
Boo

December 23, 2024 - Msg 120396: G-F I think the USPS model is unsustainable. As for a letter going next door, it's not like an individual can take the time to look at it and figure out it's not leaving the city. The USPS delivers over 300 million pieces of mail a day. They have to deal with it with mass production and little individual handling.

I remember when FedEx started up and supposedly ran everything through Memphis. People were aghast. It's not true, for starters, but the idea does make sense logistically. I think the USPS has gone a little too far with centralizing operations, but I understand the idea. Things aren't good.

Were the hamburgers rare or hard? Happy birthday a tad late, MDC! By now you’ve all received your Christmas card from me. I just felt such sadness and everyone missing Romeena so much that I got the idea to look for one of her stories to share. I found that last Christmas story she wrote and thought it was just perfect to share. It showed a little attitude and willfulness, her humor, and her tender love toward her mother. I felt it was the whole Lanni package. Glad you all enjoyed it. A few of you need to get on the Christmas card list! Not to name names, but Billy Ray and John Masters! Possum, Boo, and Pappa Bear, I wanted you to know that your Christmas cards will live on—I have a cutout popup Christmas house and scene that came in a Christmas record album probably 50 years ago that I still use as a decoration. Your card fronts fit in nicely with it so I turned them into popups and added to it. Looks real cute! I also got MDC and G-F’s cards recently. Bless you all!

Glad you can use the christmas card I sent you. I found that box of cards at our local Tractor Supply store and thought they were so pretty.

Another Christmas come and gone. Much gratitude to be had. My sister and I made too much food but everyone enjoyed it. We did Italian this year for Christmas day and it was a big hit. I made my famous lasagna and this year made some Alfredo pasta, per request. We also had lots of baked goodies and homemade treats. Christmas Eve was a nice time spent with St. Susan and her crew. We did the usual Chinese christmas gift exchange and ate too much. We tried to play some games but I think we were all in a food coma so that didnt last long. Chrismtas Day family came to eat around 3 and I picked up our new elderly friend Lonnie, who is 80 and has no family or support in the community. He spent Thanksgiving with us and I didnt want him to be alone on Christmas so he came and ate lasagna. Sweet man.
Later in the evening, we had some neighbors drop in and Zach and his sweet family came over and ate lasagna. After food was all put away and guests gone, Bruce and I sat out on the porch swing for an hour and enjoyed the lights and conversation. Bruce's hearing has gotten so hard that we dont talk much anymore. He told me that he will be getting a cochlear implant in 2025 because he is missing too much. Thats for sure! He has been waiting for Medicare to kick in because our regular insur@nce won't cover it, sadly.

I have not been working much during the holiday season and won't really until mid January when Bruce goes back to work. He had a couple of weeks he had to take off or lose.

Guess what I had for breakfast? Leftover tamales and coffee. One of my favorite meals that I only get during the holidays. These were chicken and cream cheese and boy, are they good!

Better get going..plenty to get done. Going to leave the tree up until after new years but have to remove some of the other Christmas clutter that is putting me on edge. lol Adios!

Gt all the wrappings and boxes burned up yesterday and new stuff put away, doing some cleaning and laundry today.

December 27, 2024 - Msg 120415: Charlotte, I KNOW I have read Lanni's story before-it was just so familiar to me. I noticed the "Reminisce" logo on the bottom of the story and am wondering if it had been published in Reminisce magazine? I used to subscribe to that magazine, read it for many years,so it could be possible that I read it there, not realizing that it was written by our Romeena. That's the only thing I can think of,unless Ro ever posted it here on the Porch, which I don't think she did. But I swear it was familiar to me. Thank you so much for sending it to all of us.
Boo,that is wonderful about Bruce getting a cochlear implant. It will make life so much better ,I'm pleased for him to be able to get the implant. Glad y'all had a good Christmas and how sweet of you to include your elderly friend. You're a treasure! Yeah, I need to start putting away some of this Christmas stuff too. Won't be today-lol

It has items you cant get at Walmart and would have to drive all the way into Corpus Christi, which is about a 30 minute drive from us. They also have some pretty nifty gift items and such around Christmas time. They carry some of the old timey stuff like candy and toys we used to have when we were kids.

I am very glad Bruce has decided on the implant, Possum. It will change our lives..more than he realizes.

January 02, 2025 - Msg 120430: Hello Porchsters. Had an interesting day yesterday. I was supposed to meet my minister's wife to pick up the mail that'd been collecting in our PO Box. We'd agreed via text last week to meet. The mail was going to include the PO Box fee letter due January 1st. We were supposed to meet December 31. Unfortunately, on the 30th, my phone died. I thought I called the minister, one of only 2 numbers I have memorized, but he no longer had the number I called as that was a work phone (he's retired)and I didn't realize. I showed up for our meetup, and the restaurant was closed. I waited about 5 minutes and decided she'd tried to text me and tell me a new meeting place.

I drove to their house, nobody home. I gave up and just drove to the Post Office and paid our bill. They're kind of not supposed to do that, the point of me wanting the bill anyway, but no big deal.

Meanwhile, after not hearing from me, the minister and wife decided I was probably dead since I wasn't answering calls or texts! I was watching football yesterday when my doorbell rang. I sort of knew it was someone checking on me. It was minister and wife and they were shore glad to see me. There were any number of ways this mixup could have been avoided, but the dependence we have these days on cell phones is incredible.

I know I'm skipping a lot of pertinent points here, but I hope I got the gist of the matter across.

January 05, 2025 - Msg 120434: Hey Porch Buddies, just dropping by. Bruce and I just got home from an out of town trip for a few days to see one of my best childhood friends, Donia. She and her husband bought a beautiful ten acre piece of land in the forests of East Texas. They built a home and it is a really lovely, peaceful place for them. We headed out right head of an artic blast that is supposed to bring snow to the area in a day or two. it is even supposed to get in the thirties way down here. I love it, as you all know. Anyway it was good to get away but good to be home, too.

On the first day of out trip I received a text from one of my dearest friend, Susan, who attended nursing school with me and we were room mates after college. The text simply said, "If I have bad news about my health, should I call you or text it to you". I said, "Call me". Turns out she was just diagnosed with lung cancer. She stopped smoking many years ago, but has a very strong family history. Brother, Dad and mom died of lung cancer, and sister has breast cancer. Now her. It really got me down thinking about her going through it and frankly, thinking of myself going through walking through cancer again with a dear friend. I have lost so many friends, as you all know. It will be hard, but I will do it of course. We have always been there for each other. If you feel so led, please send up a prayer for Susan, her husband and daughter. (Alan and Jen). Thank you.

January 07, 2025 - Msg 120442: Thank you all for the prayers and kind words for my friend. I hate the waiting game until we know exactly what we are dealing with. Im very sorry about your friend, Charlotte.

We are dealing with some tough stuff these days. It seems to come at us from every direction. My sister St. Susan (from here on I will refer to my sister as St.Susan and my friend as Susan to avoid confusion), is going through a tough time and was over today to have coffee and a therapy session. lol. Her son Matt is still drinking and fighting with his live-in girlfriend, who is very controlling and getting very mean to my sister and brother in law. Matt just doesnt seem to have the courage to ask her to leave and she wont leave easily, thats for sure. Crazy, toxic situation because they are living in my sister's house. So, in one house, my sister, her husband, her son and his girlfriend, her grand daughter Emily, and five dogs are living in a three bedroom house. My sister wont ask them to leave because of Emily. Yesterday, the girlfriend got ugly and said some really mean things to my sister and my saintly sister actually told her off, and in no uncertain terms, and in loud tones. lol You would know how surprising that is if you knew my sister (christian, church secretary, never raises her voice, etc). It's just awful. Praying and wondering how things will turn out. St Susan's husband is the one who has Leukemia and had a recent heart attack. They do not need this stress and I dont know why they are tolerating it in their home. There is no getting through to them on that regard, though.

Well, Bruce has been out working in the yard all day and taking down the last of the christmas decorations and is getting hungry. I have to go finish dinner. Tonight we are having pan seared thin, marinated chicken breasts with onion and peppers, topped with cheese, Texas Roadhouse seasoned rice (I had a recipe), and fresh cooked carrots and corn. You are all invited to grab a plate and join us. Bring dessert, though, if you want any cause I didnt make any.

January 11, 2025 - Msg 120447: Good Saturday porch family.

Checking in from my end of the porch after the snow storm.
It didn’t really start snowing on my end until about 3:30 pm yesterday .We had salted the driveway which helped initially but once the temperatures dropped the snow covered most everything. We ended up with maybe 3-4 inches by morning. the city where we live did a pretty good job of clearing the main roads as well as our street so it’s mainly clear now. Patrick came over and cleared our driveway so we are good to go if needed. They are forecasting colder temperatures with the possibility of more snow this week.

You know what Calvin Coolidge said (or maybe he didn’t) “everybody wants to complain about the weather but nobody wants to do anything about it”.

Prayers for Boo and her friend and her friends family, MDC and Mrs . Cecile, Charlotte, SPOT, Possum, GF, Billy Ray and all those affected by the fires in California.

Please keep Little Tripp in your prayers this week as he is supposed to have tubes put in his ears on Thursday the 16th.
Poor little fella has struggled with multiple ear infections since he was born. The pediatric ENT they saw said the way his ear canals are made they hold fluid resulting in the infections. Hopefully this will resolve his problem. Patrick had to have tubes in his ears before he was 2 years old and they helped him so fingers crossed.

I made a big ole crock pot of creamy tomato soup for dinner and will have grilled cheese sandwiches to go with it so if you all want some come on over.

Prayers and blessings to all

January 12, 2025 - Msg 120449: Hey Y'all- Thought I'd check in before somebody did a Trouble Check on me! No trouble, other than this danged cold weather! We are not used to this down South! Going on 2 weeks of it now,but our lows will finally be above freezing Friday night. Heat wave! Woke up to a dusting of snow Friday morning-thought I was in the Twilight Zone! Spotty got a good bit of snow over in GA. Yep,it's been a time in the South, for sure. I can't wait for 100 degree weather and yes, I am serious!! Anyway, that's about it. Continued prayers for Cecile and MDC and Boo, I'm praying for your Susans. Rough, rough situations for both of them. God bless. Sending prayers for Tripp too. I hope the tubes help him.
Y'all keep safe and warm. Prayers for all affected by the CA fires and also the people of Western North Carolina as they are still struggling with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. It's awful up there but the media has turned a blind eye to it.
Y'all have a good week ahead, friends. Love to all.

January 13, 2025 - Msg 120450: Happy Monday! So many prayers needed. Praying for Cecile, Boo’s Susan, my friend Susan, little Tripp’s ears, and now we have a friend Mike having heart surgery and my uncle in his 90s having eyelid surgery today to help him see better. And, of course praying for LA and all those affected by the fires. Things are pretty quiet here. Planning on my hotel swim this morning. Pretty cold wind chills here on my porch this morning. Glad you checked in, possum and that all is well. Hope it warms up there soon. I read through my gardening journals/records the other day. Starting to make a planting plan for 2025.

As far as the weather it is still cold in the winter and they DO get snow...Their weather is much like Ohio so you shouldn’t OVEREXPECT ....

I already cleaned up 3” of snow this morning and more to come...”It’s a FUN day!....G-F

January 16, 2025 - Msg 120454: Good Evening folks, just wanted to give you an update on little Tripp. Everything went good with putting the tubes in his ears. Patrick texted me about 7 am this morning and said they had just taken him back to the procedure room then he texted me about
7:50 am and said they were already home. They live about 15 minutes from the surgery center, It only took 10 minutes. I checked on him this afternoon and he was doing fine. Hopefully this will help. Thanks for your prayers!

Its been downright cold here this week, we still have snow and some ice in places. Its supposed to be close to 50 tomorrow but turn very Cold by the first of the week. brrrr

GF: we have our room reservations made for the meet up. I coordinated my dates with Neal Brower’s lecture in July. Looking forward to seeing you !

Prayers for everyone🙏
Blessings all around

January 17, 2025 - Msg 120455:

HI ALL, tonight's me-tv ep was Cyrano Andy and the first appearance
of Thelma Lou. And barney even tells her that she's the only girl for him. :)
GF or anyone else know if any kind of REAL Mayberry music album
was ever made? I'd like to buy one if available.

Oh, also in last night's eps was the one with the upsidedown map of Idaho behind Andy's desk. I always get a kick out of that!

Maudie, so good to hear that about Tripp. PTL that it went so good!
Keep warm folks. Good to see all the posts.
God bless,
MDC

January 17, 2025 - Msg 120457: Hey y'all- Asking for prayers for my " Mr. Possum." He had a mild stroke sometime Wednesday, we think, and is in the hospital. He is normal in all ways, other than it affected his memory and he has trouble telling the name of things, even though he says he knows what they are. He will need speech therapy, PT,OT and a lot of tests so not sure how long he will be in the hospital but we're going to get him well. It will take time and many prayers,so if you would, please pray for my Larry. Thank you and I'm sending love to all.

This version of The Taylor's Front Porch has been created to pay our respect to the original porch found on Mayberry.org. Thanks to Frank for all the work he did for Mayberry on the web. We've tried to make this just like Frank's Porch. This is also a tribute to Ollie's "Trivialities" site which was another homage to Frank's porch but is no longer with us.
