Good morning, porch! It's chilly at 46° here this morning, cloudy and damp, but not raining. Sure looks like it might, though. I've got my sprinklers on hold, just in case.
I'm going to be playing bunco today. We used to play at night, but so many of our little gang don't drive at night anymore that we took a vote and ended up deciding to meet at noon now. I don't like it, it just doesn't feel right, and there are enough of us who still drive when and where we please that carpooling is not a problem, but the majority ruled. Oh well. It's not a value of life, one way or the other, as an old friend used to say. We still carpool, so I'm not sure what difference it makes for the ones who wanted to change the time, but c'est la vie! The ones who don't drive at night aren't driving in the daytime either. Oh well. I'm just grateful I can still drive, and actually I guess it's a good thing, because one of the gals who wanted to change the time has absolutely no business driving anytime, daylight or dark. Our first clue about her driving was the night she actually got her car crossways on somebody's double-wide driveway while trying to back out. The driveway has a slight curve in it, and it just blew her mind. She had been parked next to me, nosed up to the garage door. She started to back up, started see-sawing and was definitely going to take one or both of my right-side doors with her. I told her to just sit still and let me get out and give her more room. I backed out, and backed across the street and stopped. I wasn't going to miss that show for anything! She started out again, and I swear, I don't know how she did it, but she ended up with her car sitting crossways on the driveway, with about two feet of concrete in front and back of her car. By then, everyone had stopped to watch, and I felt sorry for her, so I took my little group out of there. I don't know how she finally got out of her predicament, but I'm betting there were some tire tracks in the lawn when she left.
Well, better scoot. Got two people to pick up, and we dare not be late. The crazy driver is our hostess today, and she is a stickler for punctuality. One catty remark from her today and somebody might just smack her! Not I, of course.
Blessings, friends! Keep looking up! --Romeena

Oh, dear Lord! I cannot believe what I've just read! I'm sure all of us who read this will be beyond shocked! I counted Kel among my dearest friends, though we have never met in person. This "porch" is an unusual place, and the friendships forged here are strong and unique. It will never be the same again without our Asa. A kind and gentle man, a child of God, with a delightful sense of humor, and a spirit of genuine concern for others. I cannot imagine this porch without him, and he will be sorely missed.
Debbie, know that his love for you was evident every time he mentioned you, which he did quite often. If ever there is anything we could do for you, just let us know. Please feel free to come to the porch anytime. You would be most welcome. Our population has dwindled a bit over the years, but there are still several of us old-timers here, and we will be praying for you. We know that Asa would do the same for any of us.
May our good Lord bless and keep you, and send comfort and strength to you at this very difficult time. I'm going to send you my contact information, so check Kel's email. Physical distance is a hindrance, but we can't change it. We can, however, maintain contact through all the conveniences the internet has brought us.
God bless you, Debbie. Kel spoke of you so often! It was obvious that he loved you very much. You have friends here on the porch, so visit anytime you wish. Keep looking up! --Romeena

Remind them that he is alive and well in your heaven, in the home that He prepared for His children, and Kel certainly was one. Well, I am sorry Porch Family. I know you we are all hurting and it is a really tough loss. You don't lose a friend of 20+ years and not feel a great loss. The Porch just wont be the same without Asa. I think of the many times he made me laugh out loud here at my keyboard! He had a wonderful sense of humor and was so funny. I will miss that the most, I think. He was also a great encourager. I think of the many, many times he has encouraged me here on the porch and in emails we shared. I know he was genuinely concerned about what I was going through and the wellbeing of my family. So many prayers on my behalf. He would use his own difficult life experiences to teach me what he had learned through them. He had been through some very tough times but had such a grace about him that you would never know. I love the way he showed so much tolerance and forgiveness when I actually had the audacity to bash his religion eight here on the porch (I recently apologized, and of course he was gracious), I loved when he started cooking and would ask how to do things, and then started to be proud of his accomplishments. I loved how concerned he was for his daughter when she was having heart issues after the birth of her child, and how he loved his grandchildren. I loved that he was devoted to and cared for Debbie.
I loved the Christmas movie quotes that used to start in late November. I loved that he made a big deal of the gifts I sent during the holidays. I remember when I knitted the scarves one year and he went on and on about how nice it was and how he liked it. Christmas before last, when I was making candy, he mentioned that he loved seafoam candy at Christmas but had not had any in years due to Debbie's inability to work in the kitchen. I decided right there that I would try to make some. The first batch was no good because I scortched it and threw it out. I made a second batch that turned out well so I packed it up and mailed it to Asa. I soon received the sweetest thank you. He said it made him cry a little. So many memories we will always cherish. He certainly will never be far from our thoughts when we sit here on the porch. One day, friends, we will be together in a better place. We each long for Mayberry and home. One day. Love you all.

Asa and I would also do quite a bit of emailing back and forth.
You all may remember that my wife and I almost saw him at the SLC airport
when we were returning from Yellowstone, but flight issues made it not
possible. But he did love tags. His favorite line of all time was when
nurse mary kissed Andy on the cheek, and he told Barney that it was better
than a mule's nose. We'd often kid about that one. He also really loved his
work. I just looked back at Feb 2016 archive, and he was talking about
boiler work, and his desire to get it right the first time, etc.
And love of his family always came out. The last email to me was that
he was to start chemo very soon, so I'm not sure what turn of events
happened; but I did just read his obituary, and it sure expresses all that we
knew of him. I'm sure he is with the Lord now, but I will sure miss his
wit and his expertise in things that I would ask him about. God bless you
Kel, will miss you buddy, but I'll be praying for your family for sure.

Good morning, porch! And well said, Boo!/b> One more day of trying to wrap my mind and heart around the earthly loss of Asa. It's going to take a while, to get used to his absence. If we ever do! Isn't it wonderful to know that we will see him again? We, who are the believing children of God, will all be together one day, and the Bible says in 1 Corinthians 13:12 KJV: "For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known." That scripture can be applied more than one way, but the one that appeals most to me is the idea that we will recognize each other, and our memories of earthly life will be intact. Do I know that as fact? Of course not, though it does seem pretty clear. This I do know - it makes me happy now, and God has stated that He has plans only to make us happy, so that's good enough for me. I truly expect to meet Asa in heaven one day, and we who have never met will recognize each other, and will know everyone we meet, and "so shall we ever be with the Lord," according to I Thessalonians 4:17. What will Heaven be like? I don't know, but if anything we want to make us happy will be there, then there will be a couple of Fresian horses in the meadow near my home, and all the little dogs I have loved over the years will be there, too! This may all be nonsense, because my little earthly mind is not really capable of discerning the truths of God's glory. Whatever the reality of Heaven turns out to be, it's going to be far more amazing that I can imagine.
Well, enough. Blessings to everyone on this porch. Keep looking up. --Romeena

Hello, it's me, Hazel.
Boo let me know yesterday about Asa. And like all of you I am shocked, and so very sad. I wanted to pop in yesterday, but I had Dr. appointments with my husband all morning, then stuff with my granddaughter in the afternoon and evening... but I thought about him all day and at times it was hard to hold it together.
Like most of you, I feel like Asa and I go way back. We first met each other in around May or June of 2001. We both seemed to be on the same TAGS boards. The Front Porch; Miss Crumps Bulletin Board (a site which was also ran by our own Floyd-Allan); The Mayberry Hotel; The Courthouse Bulletin Board and Mayberry After Midnight. Most of these sites are not in existence anymore, except for here (the porch) and the Mayberry Hotel. I did let the folks at the Hotel know about Asa's passing, and they are just as heartbroken as we all are.
As someone mentioned, it's amazing how you can feel so close to someone you never actually met in person. From when we first discovered that we only lived about 4 hours apart from each other, we seemed to hit it off. We both were into gardening, and since we have similar growing conditions we had a lot to discuss, about when we first do our planting, and what to plant, etc. He was such a devoted family man, and he put his family and faith first... I always admired that. He was never judgmental about my own religious leanings. I loved his quick TAGS quotes. He had such a fun sense of humor! I shall miss him tremendously.
My condolences to all of you. Asa loved and appreciated you all so much, and I know your love and friendship meant so very much to him.

And I so hope that Heaven is full of animals, God created them before humans so it makes sense in my little pea brain that they will be there too. Asa was such a genuinely kind and caring person. He made it a point to ask about my Laci and I know he prayed for her so many times over the years. I'd like to think that she has gained another angel that is watching over her.
Things I'll always think of when I think of Asa- his compassion, kindness & humor, his crush on Betty Lynn (I hope she gave him a big kiss on the jaw when he got to Heaven!), his playing along with Tom when Tom put his tin star on and became mean ol'"Sheriff Tom", his Christmas movie quotes with Boo, his shop talk with G-F,and last but not least, Asa with his toolbelt doing his act over at the Gigolo Club! Oh,we had some times, didn't we?!
BTW- Not sure if y'all have seen the tribute slideshow to him that is posted below his obituary but please make a point of viewing it,if you haven't. Might want to have some Kleenex handy, but do watch it.

Good evening, porch! Just got home from the monthly JOY (Just Older Youth) dinner at the church. Good food, caterod by the Hospitality and Culinary Arts department of a local high school. Those kids do an excellent job, and learn more than just food preparation, they also learn a bit about hotel management and such, and graduate with a certificate that opens doors for them if they choose to major in that area. They turn out some really great meals, serve it, and monitor the room for any needs that might arise. Smart.
After the meal, there is always entertainment, and most of the time, it's excellent. Tonight was a singer, a man who has backed a lot of well-known performers, such as Neil Diamond, Glen Campbell and others. Last month was a young man named Keron Jackson, and if you ever get a chance to hear him, grab it. He's remarkable. He was an unwanted child, his father tried to force his mother to abort him, but thank God, she refused. However, she was not able to raise him herself, so his childhood was spent in various homeless situations, foster homes, whatever. Along the way, a man (a Christian teacher) met him and after a while, the man saw the talent in him, and took him in, saw that he got an education, and got him in church. Keron's testimony is beautiful, and he delivers it with such gentle comic touches, and then he sings. Oh boy, does he ever sing. His range is at least three octaves, from bass to almost a tenor, and his voice is beyond impressive. You can find hin here: http://keronjackson.com/ Thank God his mother didn't let his father bully her into destroying him.
I did not know you were in the hospital. Where did I miss that? Prayers for you, friend. Please share whatever you wish, if you wish. We are concerned for you, and will keep you in prayers.
A floral arrangement - actually a nice plant that Debbie can keep for as long as she wishes - has been ordered for the service for our beloved Asa. Personally, after almost 27 years, I still have and care for a plant that I received when my Dale passed. Flowers are lovely, make a beautiful display, and are a comfort. They do have a brief life though, so the plants are there to last a while. Both serve a purpose in their own way. I thought the porch would want to do a plant, so I did. The card reads "From the Andy Griffith Porch members" or something like that.
We are going to miss our Asa. We will remember that Debbie and the rest of his family is missing him on an entirely different level and to a much greater degree than we will, but still, an empty space will be where he used to post such kind and funny and encouraging comments. We'll just all miss him, in different ways and to different degrees, but he will be missed. Along with missing him, my heart is warmed by the thought that he is now at home with the Lord he loves, and we will meet him again, when we too ascend to the home that God has prepared for those who believe and trust in Him. Thank you, Lord.
Blessings, friends. Keep looking up! --Romeena

Also, I don’t know if I shared this before but at last Mayberry Days during our Chapter Report Meeting a ran into a man who was giving their report and he mentioned PaPa Bear as the founder of their group...
After the meeting, I talked to him and YES, it was our PaPa Bear he was referring to. He said he lost touch and hadn’t talked to him in years and assumed he had passed away from his battle with Agent Orange....
Well....Long story short I assured him PaPa Bear is still with us. Yes, still fighting that battle but still with us....And thanks to MDC I got in touch with Frank and told him the story. So I contacted his friend and now they BOTH have each other’s contact information so they can now talk to each other again!
So Thank you MDC for your help making this happen!...But Wait, the story doesn’t end there. PaPa Bear was stationed at the same base same time as my Brother!...But it doesn’t end there, a friend of his where he lives now who’s last name is Mayberry was ALSO stationed there at the same time too!
It gets even better...This man KNEW my Brother the both served in the same unit doing the same job repairing and being a door gunner on Huey helicopters....Actually my Brother was his replacement when he was sent home!....

Our precious grandchildren sang I Need Thee Every Hour, with the oldest playing the piano and all the others except the baby sang. Even our precious 4 yr old knew all the words. I am so thankful for all of your prayers, they were sorely needed and answered. I have been born up with a strength that is not my own, and I know my Savior has given me that great gift. I have always loved the Book of Isaiah with its extensive teachings about our Savior. I know the truth contained in Isaiah 53:4, He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows, and I have felt that in abundance these past weeks.
Thank you again for all of your kindness. As a postscript, I can't at this moment remember the password to Kels computer. My brain has it hidden somewhere. My e-mail is debslegges@aol.com

You are most welcome Debbie.
While watching the video about Kel, it stalled a bit at a photo transition,
so I captured it with a screen save and posted it at the Mortuary site.
I think you will like it. I am glad that his service was so nice, and
well attended. Thank you for sharing about it with us. God's peace to you
and yours.
GF--I also called pappabear on Thursday, and during the conversation
told him of Kel's passing. Frank seemed to be in good spirits, and that
is so cool to have gotten back in touch with his old friend.
Thanks for your kind words. My, that is an amazing story of him and your brother.
Poor Horatio--so sorry to hear of your falls, but happy to hear that
you took the medics advice. I do get concerned when you don't check in,
so thanks for doing so my friend. Prayers continue.
RO--so very neat about Keron Jackson. Funny thing is, I just saw him last week
on a Christian TV station. Your joy dinner sounded really nice.
God's peace and joy to you all.

Good afternoon, porch! I've been very lazy this morning, and I'll admit, that's getting to be a habit. Too often, it seems like all my get-up-and-go has got-up-and-gone. I never thought I'd reach that point, let alone admit it, but here I am. If it weren't for this dadburn scoliosis, I'd be just fine. I really have no right to complain though. The scoliosis was diagnosed when I was 15, based upon one x-ray that showed a very slight curve in my upper spine, and the minor flattening of one shoulder blade. My very astute mother noticed that one day when I was wearing a swimsuit, and that led to the x-ray. The not-so-smart doctor she took me to got all up in the air and wanted to do surgery immediately to put in twin rods along my spine, from neck to waist, which would then require my living in a body cast for a solid year, which just happened to be my senior year in high school. I think not. The doc got all miffed, and informed my mother that I'd never carry a baby to full term with the scoliosis uncontrolled. Well, somebody carried four kids, no problems at all, and that somebody looked a lot like me. My parents let me make the decision, and I finally got the doc to admit that it could be done later if things got worse, and that was what we did. So I had a normal teen life, graduated high school at age 16, with not a body cast in sight! I rode my horse daily, water-skiied, climbed to the top of Enchanted Rock in South-Central Texas (a rite of passage for most young Texans) and basically did any moral thing I wanted to do, and had a very happy life, not just as a teen, but as a very happy adult, wonderful marriage and four great kids.
Now, at 83, some of that doctor's threats are coming true. The scoliosis is active, and is turning me into a pretzel. My center-of-gravity is all wonky, and I try to always be near something I can touch to maintain my balance. So far, I haven't fallen. Oh -one trick I've learned. When I realize a fall is inevitable, I just let my knees buckle and just sink to the floor. Trying to fight an impending fall is usually futile. Just relax and sink to the floor. Much safer! Haven't been hurt yet!
MDC, I'm glad you saw Keron Jackson! Did you ever hear a more beautiful voice? Did he share any of his personal experiences, the things that led him to where he is today? It's amazing! I really like and admire him, and am so glad he had the God-led experiences that brought him to where he is today. He's really an impressive ambassador for the Lord. A bear of a man, with the soul of a lamb.
Debbie, you are so very welcome here on the porch. You may or may not want to visit here, but know that you're loved, and are so welcome. Please stop in anytime you wish, there's always an empty rocker. We were all so impressed with Asa's devotion to you, and we want you to know we all loved him and will never forget his gentle ways, and the way he always knew just what to say in any situation. If you wish to take a "porch name", that's fine, or if you want to use your own name, that's fine too. You will continue to be in our prayers, dear girl. We all know where Kel is now, and we look forward to a reunion with him in times to come. God loves you, and so do we!
Blessings! Keep looking up! --Romeena

Why I would be honored to coach y'all again this tear. It is always enjoyable, except when Homemaker throws her empty moon pie wrappers at me. And of course having the Plum as our mascot is a must. As far as practice goes we better have it at Boo's place. I still have 6 inches of snow on the ground and another 1/2 foot is due in tonight. We need the water but man I need some spring.:)
Hope you get feeling better soon Boo and family and Charlotte and all. I am still fighting bronchitis. Really sick of hacking and coughing.
Reckon I'll get off to work now.
Y'all have a good day.
Asa

February 28, 2004 - Msg 19741: Good evening, all. I love this porch! The exchange of opinions and ideas is wonderful. As for the creature Satan was carrying - I would hesitate to call it a baby, though he was carrying it like one. It was misshapen and had a hideous, leering face. I took it to be a demon, but the idea of it being the anti-Christ is very intriguing. Satan himself was chilling, but fascinating, almost compelling at times. Just like the real thing. As for the movie, there are no adequate words to express the experience, and I won't try. To my complete amazement, I never cried. I think I was beyond that. I just pray that God will continue to draw people to see it, and will bless their experience with the film, and that it will be used to bring many into His kingdom that might not make that decision under any other influence.
Hazel, I left the Plum's little mascot suit in your mailbox. If you'd be so kind as to put some sort of decal over that mustard stain, I'd be very grateful. I could do it, but I probably couldn't find my iron. If a garment needs ironing, it can't live at my house, so I don't know where mine is. I keep up with the ironing board, though, because it's too big to lose, and besides, it's often needed for a kid to sleep on when we have a lot of company.
I started buying rose bushes today - only found two of the dozen or so I've chosen, but I'll keep looking. If anyone sees Mr. Weaver, please tell him I'll probably need him to spray for aphids in a few weeks.
And now for some supper. Wish I could make it to Spot's or Pipeman's for some leftovers, but I'm too tired to go out again. Have a great Sabbath tomorrow, friends. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena
April 17, 2005 - Msg 28280: Hey, hold on there, Daniel R. Nobody is judging anyone by their name, and I apologize on behalf of the porch if it seemed that way to you. On this porch, you can call yourself by any name you choose, and if you want to go by your real name, that's fine with us. We were only suggesting "handles" because most of us use them, and we wanted you to feel at home. If you prefer to use Daniel R., then that's who you shall be. You're so right, many of the names used here weren't used directly on the show. Some are references, and some just came out of the imagination of their owner, and they're all just fine. So stick around, Daniel R., you are welcome here.
Spot, that was a good meal! Sure did enjoy it. We need to do this more often. And what about softball? Are we gonna have a team? We talked about it earlier, but haven't said any more. The Plum got her little mascot uniform out and asked me to tighten the seams in a couple of places, and get it cleaned, so I did. Now we just need to grease the wheels on her wagon, and she'll be ready to make refreshment rounds.

So many memories of Asa! Another bond we had was our love of the "All Creatures Great and Small" series. We used to go to Sara's Chat room and talk about the books and we'd quote lines from them and laugh about the funny things that would happen. Like me, he had read each of the books many times. I was looking back at an exchange we had in 2012, on the Mayberry after Midnight group, and he had wished me happy birthday. I said "Thank you, Laddie." And he replied "I was afraid you was gonna say "nowt to any more birthdays"!" We loved to try to talk the same way the farmers did to James.
Asa meant so much to so many people!

Hey Porch,
Just an observation of inconsistencies in the TAGS...
In "A Black Day for Mayberry," Andy says, "It's big all right, it's about the biggest thing that ever happened to this town."
So...the Hollywood movie being shot on location in Mayberry, using the town and it's citizens in the movie, wasn't?!
Y'all take care!

Hello Porchsters. John Masters, I know there's a boatload of inconsistencies, and I don't what makes one seem more interesting than another, but that's a big one. Big. BIG! I saw one myself last week. In Medal For Opie, Barney shows Opie the strange exercise on the porch where he pushed someone with his legs. After that doesn't work, Barney tells Andy, "He's gonna sprint down that track like greased lightning." Opie replies, "Really Barney, like greased lightning?" Whereupon, clearly, an off screen Andy and not Barney replies, "Yes sir!" It's at 8:52 of the episode. Just a really strange sequence. I can't imagine why they couldn't just record Barney saying "Yes sir" if they forgot it in the original shoot, which is my first guess. Even the sound quality sounds totally different from the rest of the scene. I reckon a lot of these come down to them really not considering the ability of the average person to watch a recorded version of the show. No way I'd have noticed it on the first hearing.
