March 04, 2019 - Msg 111791:
Good morning, porch! It's cloudy, windy and cold here today, a good day to just stay snuggled up in the house with my little furkid, and I think that's just what I'll do.
Oh, my! That's awful about the little boy who lost his hand. Poor little kid, just wanted to play with the dogs, and what a terrible price he paid. I would be interested in the type of fence it is. If it's open, like a chain link, then there is no excuse for what the dogs did. However, if it's a solid privacy fence, so that the dogs couldn't see the child, that little sock-covered hand could have looked like a threat, possibly like a snake, to the dogs. What a tragedy. That poor little boy!
Some former (yay!) neighbors of mine had two big chow mix dogs, which they kept penned on a tiny patio between their house and the privacy fence between us. That put those loud, excitable dogs right next to my sunroom and patio. Once I dropped the key to my back door on the tile floor in the sunroom, and those dogs heard it and barked their silly heads off for about ten minutes! Well, one day the dogs were making so much noise, scratching and clawing on the concrete patio, and chewing on something, and they wouldn't shut up, just whining constantly. I stood on a chair and looked over the fence, and realized they had no water, in Texas, in July. None. Their water bowl was upside down, and the poor things had clawed at the concrete, and dug in the dirt, and were chewing on the water faucet, which of course was turned off.
I got a hand spade and dug out a depression under the fence, and they went wild. They snapped and snarled, and bit at the spade, actually took one away from me and I had to get another. They couldn't see me, of course. Once I got my little depression dug out, I got a metal pie plate, slid it halfway under the fence and poured water into it from my side. The dogs were biting at the plate, until the water appeared, and then the biting stopped, and the drinking began! I just kept pouring water in and they kept drinking it, for a very long time. This became a regular routine, until those wretched people finally moved away.
Boo, I am so concerned about Erin. There just has to be an answer to her situation. Poor little thing, she remains in my prayers, along with Sean and you and Bruce. When one family member is hurting, everyone hurts. And - I guess that includes the porch. "Family" doesn't necessarily mean just blood-related.
Well, Toye Starr is looking at me like she'd like to say something, and I know what it is. "Will you quit playing with that thing on your desk and get in the kitchen and feed me?" Yep, that's exactly what she's thinking. So, off I go! Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

Yes GF. I DVR'd that episode and just watched it a few minutes ago. Odd one for sure. Did you notice who the Sheriff's widow was?
Romeena, that was a nice thing you did for those dogs. Makes you wonder about why some folks have critters. Concerning the little feller I reported on, the latest on the story I just read, and this is gruesome, the dogs actually chewed his hand off. They could not find any thing left, so they are thinking one of the dogs swallowed it. It was said to be a chain link fence, but it may have had privacy slats in it or something. But in this case, I would guess both dogs will be destroyed. They are Huskie breed and I don't know much about if they are vicious as a rule or not. Just heartbreaking. If you go to KSL.com you can find more on the story.

Frankie, our weatherman said we will be getting some more rain this week, and it looks to be coming from you. At least it will be rain in the valleys, snow in the mountains.
MDC, I saw that episode of Alfred H. yesterday that had Mr. Maxwell, the record maker in it. He was playing a Doctor who's wife had hired a man to kill him. I guess she didn't want a messy divorce. lol
Enjoyed another great podcast last night with GF and the gang. We got to hear from Leon (Clint Howard). He spoke very highly of his parents and his older brother (Ron).
Billy, you forgot to tell MDC to give her a good wash as well. A clean truck is a happy truck. :)
No word on what is going to happen with the two dogs. Right now they are being quarantined to make sure Rabies are not present. The boy is doing ok, but has more surgery coming up. So very sad.
Last night I found a clip of the actual recording of all three astronauts on Apollo 8 during re-entry. Fascinating to listen to. I'm not sure why, but even as a kid, I think I was more enthralled with re-entry than I was with launches. Not sure why. Maybe because it was so mysterious. You never got to see it, and there was always a loss of signal (LOS) so you never got to hear it. Just a lot of gazing in the sky, looking, looking, looking, and then the camera finding the capsule hanging from the three massive parachutes, slowly falling to the watery splashdown.
Well better go rustle up some breakfast. I just saw Hawkeye having a bowl of rice krispies (he used beer instead of milk, I'll stick with milk). Put me in the mood.
Later taters.

It is fun to see who turns up in some of these old episodes. Yesterday I saw one with a very young Robert Redford in it. Another one with Robert Duvall. And I have seen several with Dick York (the first Darrin Stephens). Just goes to show you we all have to start somewhere. lol Prayers for your leg work on Friday buddy.
Romeena, now the news is saying that the fence that the young boy stuck his hand under was in fact a vinyl fence and not chain link. I agree, I think that makes a difference as to how a dog might react.
Frankie, I feel like a B.J. Thomas song, Raindrops keep falling on my head. It is supposed to rain here for several days they say, and the mountains get a lot of wet heavy snow.

Good morning, porch! It's a hazy day, and quite cold here on my porch. The sky is overcast, but it's just a heavy haze, not rainclouds. Lots of critter traffic out there, and I guess spring has sprung, because I see about a dozen robins, among all the other travelers out there. The transients are just stopping off for a drink for the fountain that empties into the pond, but the robins are settling in and scouring the ground for worms, or whatever else they can find. They'll nest in the shrubbery, along with the resident cardinals, and in a few weeks I'll have a very entertaining show out there as their little ones grow up. Young robins are very slow to become independent. Once they're out of the nest, they don't fly away, they hang out in my yard, running around on the ground, making those buzzing noises to demand food from their parents. They mostly stay under the shrubbery, but they run out to get their parents' attention now and then. It's usually at least a week before they finally become independent. The little sparrows make it in a day or two, but the robins take much longer.
MDC, that 45% EF is good! Do you take Co-Q-10? Years ago, my EF was about 40%, I started taking it, and within a short time, I was at 60% and have stayed there ever since. Even with two leaky valves, I hold steady at 58-60%. That stuff is wonderful.
I have given up teaching ESL for now. I was having to miss too often, when my breathing was so bad, and there's a really bright, eager, younger woman who was filling in for me (I think I told y'all this) so I just turned it over to her. She's doing a great job, so it's hers! I may sub now and then, we'll see. Meantime, I'm meeting Eloise and Sheila, the woman she teaches with, for lunch at Arturo's. It's a little hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant that has really good food. It's off the beaten path, tourists and travelers would never find it, it's small and quiet, and the food is great. I'll smell like a walking bag of garlic and onions for a day or two, but it's gooood! Toye Starr doesn't care, so it doesn't matter.
Speaking of central vac systems, here's another story I may have told you. One of my rent houses was rented by a sweet, but somewhat helpless South Korean man, Mr. Cho. That house has a central vac, which just fascinated Mr. Cho. He had been living there about two years, when he called me one day and told me that the vac no longer worked. He said it wouldn't even pick up a piece of tissue paper. So I sent Ted over to see what was wrong. He called me later that day, laughing. Seems when Mr. Cho demonstrated the lack of power in the vac, it went like this: (Ted) Have you cleaned the filter? (Mr. Cho) Filter? (Ted) Yes. You have to clean the filter often. (Mr. Cho) Where is the filter?) Ted took him to the garage and showed him the filter box in the storage closet. He opened the unit and pulled out what looked like a very fluffy bathmat. He took it outside, pulled the thick chunks of debris off of it, shook it out, then washed it with the garden hose, and laid it out to dry on the driveway. Mr. Cho assured him he could put it back in place himself, and offered Ted a cup of tea!
Well, guess I'd better get dressed and head on over to Arturo's to meet Eloise and Sheila. Mexican food sounds good on this chilly 40 degree day. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

RO (and all) Yes, I DO take Co Q 10, 200 mg in the am and 100 mg in the pm.
But my heart is still enlarged and in afib, so even with the new valves
the EF will take time to get higher. I guess I can tell ya all (at this point) that I was closer to the big porch in the sky before my
operation last September than I let on. My EF was about 32%, and both my kidneys
and liver with starting to go; so it was indeed by the grace of God and the smarts of the surgeon that I am still on this side of the veil! All docs involved are very happy
with my cardio rehab, and cardiologist was beaming when I saw him on Monday,
saying that with my continued good attitude, exercise, and diet that things should
be good for a good long time. (Relatively speaking:) But i will also say that Luke Perry's passing was brought up, and how we
all need to know the signs of an impending stroke, and what to do to help prevent one.
RO--Glad you made the decision to let someone else do the ESL.. I know you enjoyed it, but ya gotta think
of those taking the class and for them to have consistent lessons. Maybe you could visit now and then.
Many robins come here during the winter months. They are a very beautiful bird. Much more gracious than the
grackles! ha

Good morning all.
Yessir MDC, When you are into Maintenance work, you do a lot of everything. There was an old saying about us fellers years ago, "Jack of all trades, master of none". That has changed somewhat today to more like "Jack of all trades, master of one". I actually went through an electrical apprentice program when I first started my career. Got my Journeyman's card, and even got a job for a contractor. But by then I had already been doing maintenance work for some time, and really enjoyed the great variety it offered. So when I had the chance to go to work for an International Company as an Industrial Electrician, I jumped at the chance. Of course you realize in that world there is a lot of carry over. HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, Carpentry, Mechanical, Pneumatics, Hydraulics, with a lot of other stuff in between. Mercy sakes, I had no idea that your condition was that bad my friend. I am glad you got tuned up and are doing better. I was just reading an article yesterday about one of my major heart throbs as a young feller. Olivia Newton John. Man she was purty and could sing nice. She is battling her 3rd or 4th time with bre@st cancer. And then yesterday I saw where Alex Treback announced he has cancer. I didn't know who Luke Perry was, so I had to go look him up. Guess it just goes to show we are all humans and are all susceptible to ails and disease.
Romeena, I am sorry you gave up your ESL classes. I know how much you enjoyed teaching. But it sounds like you will still be subbing every now and again. I loved your vacuum story. Sounds like many a furnace filter I have seen over the years. I bet GF has some good stories as well. Some folks are just not inclined. I remember years ago, I had a small engine repair shop I was running part time in my garage. Well my next door neighbor at that time was a little older, and a very heavy drinker. He always had the neighbor kids mow his lawn for him, using his mower. Well one day I saw he had taken delivery of a brand new riding mower. I chuckled to myself because his lawn wasn't that big, and this rider was huge. Anyway, I was out in my garage that night and he came over and asked me if I wanted his old walk behind mower. He said the kids he had mowing must have seriously damaged the motor because it wouldn't start and was oozing oil out of the exhaust when you tried to start it. I said I guess I could use it for parts if he was just going to get rid of it. So I retrieved it. It was a shame because the mower didn't look all that old. He said it was only a year old and that's why he was so mad at the kids. I did a preliminary check of the motor, and one of the things I found was the crankcase was over filled with something. It was a foamy oily mess. So I drained it off and added some fresh oil. Put some gas in it (the tank was bone dry) pulled the starter a few times and it fired right up. Initially it smoked heavy for a few minutes, but then that started to clear up and it ran like a million bucks. Well after wondering what was going on, it finally hit me what had happened. The kids had run it out of gas. The gas cap and oil fill cap sat side by side on the mower, and they must have accidently dumped the gas into the oil filler. After running it for quite a spell and determining that was all that was wrong, I went over to the neighbor and told him the mower was fine and what I had found and he could have it back. Well he was feeling no pain (because he was elixir filled as usual) and told me to keep it, he didn't want it. So I thanked him and used it myself for the next 10 years. :)
Well Frankie has sent me a lot of her rain. I can hear it pounding down this morning. I hope it doesn't get to carried away. I have to run my Son to the dentist today. He is having a little surgery going on and needs a driver.
Prayers fo all for a safe and sane day.

Sean's new job is going very well. The man he works for (I'll call him Wally for obvious reasons...hey, maybe I should start calling Sean Goob), is a nice guy and it is a low-pressure job, which is what Sean needed. It is great that he only has to drive about a mile to and from work and he gets an hour lunch. He is going to save 250.00 a month on gas.
Yes, I certainly hope things improve at Shoreline but I am afraid to get my hopes up. I am sleepy today because now my internal clock wants to wake up at 6am. I wanted to take a nap but ended up in a long phone conversation with my pastor and blew that. He is planning a sermon this sunday on homos#xuality and I had some concerns I wanted to discuss with him. I gave him some things to think about but not sure what approach he will take in his sermon. He is generally a loving person so I think it will be ok. I am just protective of the LGBT people in our congregation, who already struggle in a way he can't understand. The pain is something that has to be lived to be understood and I fear careless preachers speaking condemnation on people who are already hanging on with all they have many times.
Well, better go get my shower and some lunch before embarking on another fun-filled evening at Shoreline (sarcasm). I get to train the new nurse again tonight so that is fun (no sarcasm). :)

That is top priority. I had every intention of doing myself but Debbie said if she hears me up on that roof she will shoot me, then divorce me. lol I have shingled more roofs than I care to think of, and the thought of hiring someone else to do it just ain't sitting well with me. Let's just say her and I have had some serious discussions on this subject. She fears I will fall and break my neck, or at least get my back flared up and not able to finish it. Asa, Ya made me Laugh Buddy...Your getting on the roof comment...I sure think our wives MUST be in communication with each other! I hear about it every time I get the ladder out to do something..I’m like you it would kill me to have someone else do my work. But on the other hand...Like Harry Callahan said...”A Man Has Got to Know His Limitations!”....So I FEEL your pain...Literally...lol

I'm pretty inept with anything remotely mechanically related. I recall once I had a major plumbing issue, and at the same time my shower drain had a clog I couldn't deal with. I was at least smart enough to call the man on the major issue, and while he was there, I mentioned the clogged drain. I had poured in some drain cleaner that the bottle said you were allowed to put in without totally draining the standing water. I was tired to my socks from trying drain cleaner, running the shower to see if it'd drain, and having to bail out the resulting water. So I got the plumber up there, he jiggled the little drain switch that I never use, and the water drained away immediately! To him, I'm sure it looked like I was too stupid to know how to open the drain, but what I knew happened was that the drain cleaner had worked overnight, despite me at some point flipping the drain lever. I didn't think it was worth trying to explain, but I was mighty embarrassed.

Good morning all.
lol Billy, don't feel bad. I have had similar experiences at looking foolish like that. And mine were almost plumbing oriented. I think it was karma. When I was an apprentice, we had classroom instruction 2 nights a week for 4 years. Just down the hall from us was the plumbers classes. We smug electrician wanna be's would say that plumbing was so easy. There were only three things you needed to know to be a plumber. 1-Payday is on Friday 2-Water goes downhill 3-Don't bite your nails. Well I'm pretty sure all that mockerage came back to bite me on the coldest part of a well digger. Sadly in the line of work I ended up going into, plumbing was a regular player. And it never played fair with me. lol I bet GF has some good stories. Right on GF?
MDC, So glad all went well. Did you ever watch Cheers back in the day? I remember whenever Norm walked in, everyone in there would yell "NORM" because he was a regular. I'm wondering if every time you walk in the Hospital now all the staff doesn't yell "STEVE". lol I do hope you are about done with Doctors for a spell.
GF, I try to tell my Wife that my Dad was in his 70's and was re-shingling his roof years ago. And she says "yea, and I remember you yelling at him to get down and you going up and doing it"! She sure has a convenient memory I've noticed. :)

Good evening, porch. Asa, let me go on record right now as being in agreement with Debbie. Look at it from her point of view. You're no spring chicken, and you have back issues that could throw you for a loop without warning. She imagines herself listening to you up on that roof, hearing a scuffle and a yell, and a crash when you hit the ground. There is nothing she can do to help you, but call 911, and pray you're still alive by the time they get there. I don't blame her one bit. Now, at the same time, I understand how you feel. I just recently, and very, very reluctantly, hired a woman to come in once a month and clean this house. It really doesn't get very dirty. The three bedrooms and bathroom up front are rarely used, I never even go up there. Toye Starr can't go there, because I have a baby gate across the entry to the hallway. I don't want a guest to go to that bathroom, and find a little TS landmine in the hallway. She is house trained, of course, but as she gets older, sometimes accidents happen. Anyway, it really annoys me to have to hire somebody to do what I've always done with such ease, but that's just the point. It's no longer so easy. We "seniors" just have to accept what is, hire the help when we need to, and be grateful that we can do that.
As for being embarrassed when "the man" just fixes something so easily, imagine how I felt one day. I was baking a pie, and when I tried to turn my oven on, it wouldn't respond. I twirled that little thing until it nearly fell off, and the oven would not start. Since it was about twenty five years old at that time, I figured it was broken, and called my friend Ted. He walked in, looked at the oven, reached up and with one finger, punched the time-set button back in, and the oven lit up. The oven can be set to turn on and turn off automatically, and I probably have used that feature about six times in the 45 years I've lived here. I don't know how the button got pulled out, but it did, and that was the problem. I felt like an absolute idiot. Ted, the weasel, thought it was hilarious, and has teased me about it over the years.
Oh, to answer your question - it's "sisters-in-law."
Well, for some reason, I've got a hankerin' for some of those ridiculous, tacky little tacos from Jack in the Box. There's a location very near me, and I'm going to hop in the car and go get me about three of them for dinner. As tacos go, they're really quite awful, but for some reason, I like them now and then. Go figure. Blessings, all. --Romeena

HI GANG, It's like "Attorneys General" not "Attorney Generals." And I saw the WRONG one in a newspaper recently!! grrr. :)
And on the other topic...if you recall, this past Christmas I stopped putting Christmas lights on my roof. It was a tough call, but one that finally had to be made. (As RO said, I'm sure my wife was also afraid of hearing the dreaded 'THUD!')
Now, as to my added sedation on Friday...this time they had to work on the BACK of my left leg, so I had to lay on my stomach. Well, I dont cotton well to that, and I get a little apprehensive because I sometimes feel like I can't breathe in that position. I'm not sure why that happens
however. So, the anesthesiologist said she would give me a little Versed to start.
I have had that in the past, so said OK. When they asked me to turn over on my stomach I said 'no problem" and that's all I remember! ha Next Friday I get the right leg done.
It is not as bad as they left one, so one session should do it. Thanks for all your prayers.
This old Mr. Darling's Cuz is ready to finally get a little reprieve. (Especially from all that orange stuff they swab on my legs and nether regions!)
ASA, that was funny, "Steve!" ha, that's about right tho.
GF--I could not get that video to play for me, sorry. Must be the lake affect 'heat' here affecting my internet. lol
ROMEENA, what is it about those darn J in the B tacos! I also get a hankering now and then.
BOO--I saw another show with that doctor tonight. Here are a few more suggestions for Erin...Start each day saying "This is going to be a great day!" Then have her think of 3 things for which she is grateful. That will help 'kill' ANTS...annoying negative thoughts. Just an idea. Also, I sure hope the new owners turn Shoreline around, or just close it down. Prayers continue for you and yours.
ASA--one more thought about those Apollo astronauts...think of how long they had to stay in that one sitting position for the whole trip with very little room in that capsule! (Only exception was when 2 went into the LEM.)
GOOD SABBATH to all,
MDC

Good Sabbath all.
Romeena, Now there you go, bringing in your common sense and reason into the argument. lol You are all correct of course. I guess it is just the male ego thing that I am battling with. My entire life I have been very active and independent, and the age factor is slowly robbing me of that, and I just don't cotton to it, not a lick. Thanks for "chiming in". I thought it was sister's in law, but it sounds odd just the same.
I hate to say it, but there are a goodly number of service type businesses that count on ignorant and/or uninvolved home and automobile owners to make easy bucks. I think GF will back me up on this. Things like a flame sensor on a furnace that needs cleaning. A fairly simple and easy process on most furnaces. But an unaware homeowner may be told they need an expensive new controller replaced or some other item. And a lot of times they will charge them for the item and not even replace it. Just pocket the money. I have heard more than one technician brag on this. Shameful. The same thing goes on in auto repairs. I think I shared the story of a State Safety Inspection being failed on my truck due to the front brakes. That station was robbing folks left and right I bet.
MDC, I hope next week is it for you for a while friend. I can't lay long on my stomach either, but more because it makes my back ache.
Interesting you would comment on how those astronauts had to sit in one place. Just last night I watched a documentary on the entire space program. They were talking about one of the Gemini flights, and Frank Borman and Jim Lovell were the astronauts on board. One of their mission tests was to see how well they would do in extended time in space. They were up for 14 days and were monitored closely. Lovell mentioned that after splashdown he was having a bit of a hard time walking for a while. They said those Gemini capsules were no bigger than the front seats of a Volkswagen bug. In fact Lovell joked about how he and Borman were now engaged. lol
GF, Yes, several chapters just on plumbing. A funny story about that. The company I worked for had a restroom located in an area that was quite a distance from any sewer lines. So a small holding tank was installed underground, with an effluent pump in it. Then a 2 inch line was installed from the pump to the nearest sewer line, some distance away. Well the pump went bad and guess who couldn't get closer than a 100 feet to it. So they had one feller on the truck, running the controls, and another feller on the end of the hose, cleaning out the holding tank. I figured since I was just a spectator on this part, I would stay near the truck, away from the smell. And it would have been a brilliant plan, except the dipwad running the controls on the truck had left a vent valve on the top of the truck open. So when the thing started sucking it was blowing out that vey vent. You guessed it, a brown rain came down on everything within 2o feet of the truck. I was not a happy camper, let me tell you! I called him some names, and Sport wasn't one of them. lol
Romeena, I was going to tell you I did another pot roast yesterday in my slow cooker and it was the best one yet. It came out really good and I was actually able to make a decent tasting gravy from it. That is often my struggle, making good gravy. So the good news, is it came out really good. The bad news is, I'm not sure why. lol I did pretty much everything the same I usually do. But I am starting to think not all cuts of roast are the same. I always go with chuck roast cuts, but some are just better than others. So I think I need to study on what to look for when buying a roast. I know marbling is important.
Well I hope and pray all of you have a great Sabbath. Go to preaching, come home and have a nice meal, go sit in your Wheelers, watch a little tv, take a snooze for a spell. Take it easy. What indeed is your hurry? :)
