June 20, 2018 - Msg 110036: Good evening, porch. Sorry I've been a little scarce, have been a bit "misplaced" for a couple of days. Nothing wrong, just busy. At the moment, I'm enjoying the last of the daylight outside my "window on the world." The sun is almost out of sight, and the sky is unbelievably beautiful. The sky is a soft blue/gray, and is streaked with fluffy clouds, which are all rosy pink, gold, or lavender. So pretty! I'm always amazed at the kindness and the imagination of God, to make things so beautiful for us to enjoy. Color, just color itself, is a wonderful gift, and He didn't have to make things that way, but I'm so glad He did.

I was grateful for His grace on Tuesday, too. I was on my way to my dental appointment, driving west on a fairly busy street. I approached a big intersection, with a green light, that had just changed to green. The oncoming traffic was still behind a red light, which had not changed yet. Fo some reason, there's a few seconds delay from that direction. As I entered the intersection, a car that had been stopped on that light suddenly shot out into a left turn, right in front of me. I slammed on my brakes, steered left as hard as I could, and missed him by a matter of inches. My light had not changed, it was still green, as proven by the three cars that followed me through the intersection. Why on earth he chose to just jump out there in front of me like that, I'll never know, but this old gal found reflexes I didn't know I still had! I'm pretty sure that my guardian angel's hair must be whiter than mine by now, after chasing after me all these years.

Nate Bracey, it's nice to see you on the porch. Don't be such a stranger! Poor Horatio, it's good to see you again, too. To answer your question, no, the little toys never arrived, and I've tried without success to work my way through the convoluted maze of their "customer service" department, so I've given up. The little hearts weren't just like Toye Starr's old one anyway, and she might not even have accepted them. I do appreciate your trying. You're a good friend.

Well, guess I'll turn in. It's early, but I've got to be at a restaurant at 8 a.m., for a birthday breakfast for a friend. I wish someone would tell the one who drummed this party up that breakfast is served until 9:30 at that particular restaurant. Anyway, prayers for our ailing ones, surely, and for all who are facing decisions, difficulties and problems. Just let go, and let God. It works out better that way. --Romeena

Its been hot on my end of the porch, in the 90's most days til late evening. Storms coming our way the next few days.

G-F: hopefully I will be headed to Mt. Airy for the meet up next month. My plan is to leave Thursday the 19th early afternoon and be there by about 4 or so. looking forward to seeing everyone.

I've been to the birthday breakfast, to the bank, spent a bit of time in the yard with Eddie and Tommy, who are still weeding and digging out sprouted trees, and am now in the house, cooling down a bit, and it's not even noon yet! I feel so industrious!

John Masters, I know what you mean about America spinning out of control, and I don't mean politically. I'm far less concerned about the political climate, much more concerned about the misguided, dangerous moral compass that seems to prevail in the general population. Politically, while President Trump leaves much to be desired in some of his own personal behavior, he's making some very good choices in policy, and in moral issues that affect the country in general. I shudder to think what would have happened had Hillary gotten into office. I realize that abortion is a personal issue, and not everyone sees it the same. There is a continuum of opinion, I know, that goes from "zero" to "anything goes", and you can probably guess where I would be on that scale. No one has to guess where Hillary would be, she stated it clearly. She thinks it's fine right on into the third trimester, the very last weeks. I disagree. I can only conclude that she has never seen a preemie, born at 20+ weeks. Call it whatever you wish, it's a baby. Give it just a few more weeks in the safety of the womb, and it will be fine. There is a reason why abortion clinics don't allow the mother to see the remains of the aborted infant, and why they insist on calling it "pregnancy tissue" rather than a "baby."

Well, that's enough. To each his or her own, I guess. Unless you happen to be "pregnancy tissue", that is. In that case, you have no rights, not even the right to life.

I found another small "inconstistancy" in a TAGS episode. In the Great Filling Station Robbery, when Barney is setting up the camera, and he reaches the door with the string, the scene outside shows a cement sidewalk and a house! John Masters, I have noticed the rain coat on Barney in that episode. Seems to be one of the few episodes where it really did rain on the 40 acres set.

GF, Another little thing I have noticed concerning Wally's location comes in a color episode. It is the one where Helen's Niece is visiting and out doing Opie in most everything. Anyway, there is a scene where they are I believe in Andy's front yard, and they race to "that tree". Cynthia beats him. Then it shows Floyd in his car, parked at Wally's, and they both watched the race. It almost plays out like Wally's was right next to Andy's house. I'd love for you to bring that one up in your discussions. Maybe I am remembering wrong, because I don't watch the color eps very much, but that seems like a glaring inconsistency to this old bank guard.

Romeena, sure glad you still got those cat like reflexes and avoided an accident. Big old Caddy or not, you don't need no fender benders.

We have the Thunderbirds in town this weekend for a big air show at Hill Air Force Base. They sure are a joy to watch. I saw an old P-38 flying around yesterday. I love those old airplanes. Such history. And for such an odd looking plane, the 38 sure could maneuver.

Sorry to read about Charles Krauthammer. He sure overcame a lot of adversity.

June 22, 2018 - Msg 110053: Great to see so many on the porch! I have been busy, as usual, but wanted to drop in for a minute. We have had ALOT of rain here on the Texas coast and it is much needed. Our grass is a brilliant green. The sun is out today, though and the humidity is off the charts! Not too pleasant but wont complain much. Our air conditioner is holding out for now and will be replaced this month.

So very glad you are ok, Romeena. People are getting worse and worse on the road..so distracted and on the phone so much of the time, and always in a big hurry. Scary! The other day my boss, Johanna, was driving in for night shift and had to drive over the big harbor bridge that I am sure you remember. She was in the middle land, thankfully, and just as she was approaching the top of the bridge, a drunk driver in a truck passed her in the left lane going the wrong direction! Someone gets killed there every now and then from a drunk going up or down the wrong way. I tell my kids to stay out of the left lane!

It's been a good summer so far. We hired a nurse back part time and it helps. I have not had to work as much most weeks. I will be on a stretch starting tomorrow though. I am still having to work alone most of the time and last Wed I worked alone on the day shift and never stopped moving. It was one thing after another..had a suicidal girl who swallowed a scr#w and cut herself up, plus many other things to do will along with administering meds. All in all, though, I still love it. Best job I ever had.

Well, I have to go get dressed. A few high school friends are meeting tonight for someone's birthday and I will get to visit with some friends I have not seen since 1980.

For those people who are not familiar with the 40 acre lot, that is where Andy Griffith filmed the outdoor scenes of the Andy Griffith Show. Other shows were filmed there including Gomer Pyle, USMC, and the original Star Trek.

I have been doing my work and listening to some interesting videos on youtube of a psychologist speaking on toxic individuals and how to best deal with them, and guess what? She is saying the same things you all have said here on the porch over the years. HAHA We have some very wise porch-sitters around here. As I was listening, I was remembering the times I have shared the pain and struggle my family has had dealing with my mother-in-law and sister-in-law and the advice you all gave me. Romeena, especially was spot-on in her advice. It has helped me so much over the years to set boundaries. Thank you to all of you because for most of my life, I have been a docile peace-keeper who didnt have a clue about how to protect myself from emotional predators but I have learned so much over the past 10 years.

Yes Asa, it is a busy summer but a good one so far. I have really enjoyed not having to be up and take Erin to school early in the morning. Unfortunately, my internal alarm clock seems to wake me early anyway but I dont have to get out and go anywhere. I am a night owl by nature so I cant seem to go to sleep early, no matter what, so I have been feeling a bit sleep deprived these days.

I sure wish I was going to be able to take a vacation this year but with having to do the heating and air, it just isnt going to happen. I have been dreaming of Colorado!

St. Susan got a dog this week...remember she lost all three of her dogs within a year's time. They were all elderly dogs so it wasnt unexpected really, but she just can't live without a dog around. She has always had large to medium sized dogs but decided that this time she would adopt a small dog since her husband is near retirement and they will be doing some traveling. I went with her to our local shelter, which is very nice, and we were immediately greeted by a little chihuahua girl named "Twiggy". She was very friendly and wanted to go home with Susan. She is black with tan markings, about 4 years old and was abandoned in an apartment by her last owner. She is very well-socialized, playful, housebroken and just perfect. She adjusted beautifully to her new home. They told us she had puppies in her lifetime and they spayed her. I suspect she may have been used for breeding pups because she is a very nice-looking chihuahua. Poor girl will have a good life now.

Well, better get off here and make rounds to see if anyone needs anything.

June 25, 2018 - Msg 110065: Good morning, porch. Well, yesterday evening I proved that Bumbles do still bounce! At least this one did. I was watering my orchids in the sunroom and started back into the kitchen for more water. In 2005 I had surgery to repair a blown ACL in my left knee, and I have thought for a couple of years now that the graft has failed, because that knee is loose, and will sort of "buckle" now and then. It has never caused me to fall, but last night, it did. Just as I stepped up with my right foot to clear the threshold into the kitchen, that knee gave way and down I went.

I fell into the kitchen, hit on my knees first, then onto my left hip. Somewhere in there, I smacked the edge of a bench with my mouth. My hands were everywhere, trying to catch myself.

Result: No broken bones. No loss of consciousness. No apparent head injury. No blood loss. Lower lip swollen and badly bruised, but no bleeding as skin not broken. Temporary crowns on two front teeth intact and undamaged. First two knuckles on left hand swollen, stiff and sore. Possible mild sprain to right wrist. Right knee lightly scraped but not swollen. Left knee moderately scraped but not bleeding, knee grossly swollen and extremely sore. Will support body weight, but very painful to walk on it, and feels loose. Able to get to feet unaided, and can walk. May need walker to modify pain.

OK, now you know how nurses chart an assessment. I said no blood loss, as the small nick on my left knuckle bled less than some rose-thorn snags I've gotten, and doesn't even need a bandaid. The left knee is another story as far as injury goes, and I've got an appointment this afternoon with the surgeon that fixed the ACL back in 2005. Eloise is coming over to go with me. She'll probably drive, though I could, since it's the left knee that's injured.

After I managed to sit up from lying on the floor, I just sat there, leaning back on the wall, and thanked God that I hadn't broken any bones or hit my head. I'm a bit beat up, but it could have been so much worse. I'll heal, and go on my merry way. I just hope my poor little worn out guardian angel can keep up!

Well, guess I'll go feed my small companion. I'm so glad she wasn't in her usual place last night, which is about two feet away from me, wherever I may be. If I had fallen on her, it could have killed her, and that would have been more than I could bear. Blessings, everyone! --Romeena
June 25, 2018 - Msg 110066: Me again. Boo, I'm glad to hear that Susan got another dog. I fully understand the need. I am not complete without a canine companion. I just can't imagine not having one. I've had many dogs over the years, and the relationship with each one has been precious, and unique, no two alike. The loss of each one has been painful, and each time I've wondered how I will replace the one I just lost, but being without a dog is even more painful. The truth is, you don't replace the one you lost. That memory, that time with the one you loved, is locked away in your heart forever. You just open a new place for the new companion, and it moves in and makes itself at home. Anyway, I'm glad for Susan, and it sounds like she found a little girl that will be her pride and joy, and the pup has found a wonderful home. --Romeena

June 25, 2018 - Msg 110068: One small correction. I said my temporary crowns on my two front teeth are undamaged. I think that's not true. I can feel what may be a crack in one of them, it follows the line of the bottom of the stub of the original tooth, like it got bent back over that stub. It may not be a crack, it may just be the bottom edge of that tooth stub wearing through, but I called the dentist anyway. He said to give it a day or two and if it changes, call. Otherwise, it can probably wait until the permanent crowns come in. Suits me! My mouth is pretty sore, bruises appearing on the outside now, I look like somebody slugged me! I think I'll be finding new bruises and assorted owies for the next few days. I can deal with it. At least there are no broken bones, unless the ortho guy finds something in that knee this afternoon. And yes, G-F, Texas women are tough, but then so are women in general, wherever they may be from. --Romeena

June 25, 2018 - Msg 110070: Good afternoon, porch. I'm back from the doctor, he xrayed both knees, my left hip and right wrist. Nothing broken, and the ACL graft in my left knee is still intact, but he said I have "terrible" arthritis in the knee, bone on bone on the outer half. He asked if I needed a cortisone shot for the pain he was assuming I have in the knee, but I wasn't having any until I fell on it. I think once I heal from the bruising and battering, I won't have pain anymore. I knew I had a little arthritis, but nothing like he was describing. I just really do have a high pain threshold, I guess. I've been told that I do.

Anyway, all is well. I'm going to warm up some leftovers, get in my recliner, put an icepack on my knee and enjoy some TV and something to eat.

Boo, if you're serious about making some slippers, I'd love a pair. Size 7 1/2, and that garnet red that Possum described sounds wonderful. I love red! My feet are always cold, so I wear socks around in the house a lot. It will be nice to have some slippers, made by my friend Boo. What a treat, and I thank you very much. Blessings! --Romeena

Not much to share tonight, just finished up all my chores here at work and am feeling mighty sleepy. For some reason I couldnt fall asleep until nearly 4am last night and then woke up at 9. Five hours is just not enough for me.

We have exactly 6 months until Christmas. Don't any of you throw a tomato at me, now!

Gosh Boo, what a kind offer to knit up slippers. I wear a size 9 shoe, but please don't feel compelled to do that for me. The beautiful scarfs was more than enough. I wish I could do something for you. But I can't cook, knit, or do much anything that is domesticated. Maybe I can come fix a sprinkler, or your a/c, or my real specialty, some kind of electrical work.

GF, I saw a new product that they were highlighting on This Old House the other day. It is wireless moisture sensors that you can set on the floor in areas of concern (like by a water heater, or washer, under a sink, places like that) It is about the size of a hockey puck, and it will give out an audible chirp, but it also sends a signal down to a master valve that will turn off the water supply to the entire house. I'm not sure what the cost was, but I can see this could be a real nice item to have for a building that is empty a lot. I remember years ago, we had been to a family get together and when we got home, the minute we entered the house I knew something was wrong. It didn't smell right, and then I could hear water running. I went into the bathroom to find water pouring out of a huge crack in our toilet tank. Not a clue what caused the tank to crack, but I ended up having to replace the bathroom floor, even the sub-flooring. And we had only been gone a few hours. I tell ya, the new gadgets they are coming up with these days are amazing.

June 26, 2018 - Msg 110074: Funny you should mention that Asa. Yes, I have a similar one of those right beside my sump pump. It has saved me a mess a couple of times when the sump pump and the sump switch failed.
It actually is quite simple device. It has a 9v battery and goes off when water connects the two open wires on the bottom. Plus it even floats too!....Beeps in cycles, so you can tell it from a smoke alarm... They are only $10-$15 so it’s a small price to pay for a little in$urance. It doesn’t shut the water off, but it does at least warn you in time tho.

June 26, 2018 - Msg 110075: Good morning, porch. Thanks for the kind comments regarding my ridiculous fall. Bruises keep appearing from nowhere. I think I mentioned that my lower lip is swollen and the inside is one big bruise. Well, now that bruise is appearing on the outside and along my jawline as well. I look like I got the worst end of a smash-mouth fight, and the bruised and swollen knuckles just add to the illusion. I am much more sore than I expected to be, worse today than yesterday. I think that's going to be the way it rolls for a couple more days, then should start subsiding. Toye Starr looks at me so quizzically, as I furniture surf and hobble around and yelp now and then. I can just hear what she's thinking - "Who are you and what have you done with my mommy?" She misses our play sessions, with me down on the floor with her. Poor little baby.

Boo, it wasn't a slip-and-fall, my knee just buckled and down I went. Don't bother with figuring out how to put non-skids in those slippers. I run around in socks all the time, and don't slip. I am going to put skid strips in my shower, though. I wonder if Amazon sells those?

Asa, in the last ten years or so, I've had three of those personal alarm thingies - the first one initiated by my daughter, one tied into my security alarm system, and one that I saw an ad for somewhere. In each case, I canceled them after about three months. I kept forgetting to wear the bracelet, or pendant, or whatever device was involved, or I would trigger it when playing with Toye Starr, one of them was only good at home, etc. That time will come, but not just yet. I'll admit, this fall has gotten my attention. As it turned out, I was able to get up without help, but it could have been different. Something to think about, for sure.

Well, guess I'll hobble into the kitchen and feed my little roomie. She's sitting here staring a hole through me, wondering why she hasn't been fed. It's about five miles into the kitchen, it seems, so I haven't tackled it yet this morning. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

ASA--I was thinking about what you said concerning the back 40 lot, how from an aerial view one can see all the false fronts. It got me to thinking, Mayberry really was a 'fantasyland', but I think we all need a little 'escapism' now and then! Keeps me 'sane in this crazy world!
BTW, I saw the same ATOH episode the other day. I always learn something new and interesting when i watch. Turns the water off automatically; next thing ya know they'll be laying asphalt down at the gas works! ha :)

Today I was watching Wagon Train, and our lady prisoner, Susan Oliver, was in it. After a restless night in
the open, she woke up with perfect make up! Amazing.
Leonard Nimoy was also in it.
ASA and GF---my sprinkler repair from a few months back is still holding, so I guess that idea worked out pretty good.
Any one have plans for July 4th? Since I have my 3 hour heart MRI with sedation on the 3rd, I think we
will have a pretty quiet 4th this year.

June 29, 2018 - Msg 110085: Good morning, porch. Sorry, I've been a little scarce the past couple of days, just haven't spent much time at my window. I'd like to, but sitting in this chair means that my knees are bent, of course. That hurts some, but nothing like it does when I decide to stand up and they have to straighten out. When I sit in my recliner, my knees are straight. When I try to stand, it hurts, but not as much, and I can start walking a little more quickly. From a knees-bent position, it can take nearly a minute to get the knees convinced that yes, they really can move. Does anyone else remember "Lost In Space" on TV? Well, remember the robot? That's what I look like when I walk. I keep expecting to hear a clanking noise.

And now, to add insult to injury, last night the temporary crowns on my front teeth fell off. Just fell off. I wasn't biting down on anything. I guess when I hit that bench it broke the bond on them, and they finally fell off. I talked to the dentist's office, and I have an appointment on Monday to get them stuck back on. The permanent ones aren't scheduled to arrive before the middle of July. So, for the weekend, I look like a snaggle-toothed old reptile, like something out of Jurassic Park. Oh well. I don't care, the beauty ship sailed a long time ago.

MDC, to respond to your question, I have two knee braces already. One is left from the knee surgery I had in 2005, and the other was given to me by the ortho doc on Monday. It seems like they should help a lot, but unfortunately, they don't. They refuse to stay in place. To stop them from working their way down to my ankle, I would have to cinch them so tight they'd cut off the circulation. Apparently others have the same problem, because on the one I got Monday, they have little "pull" loops, like on Western boots. Also, they're hot, they get sweaty and then the skin gets unhappy. I'm just going to have to be more careful.

Asa, the more I have thought about that fall, and the fact that I somehow (thank the Lord) didn't crack my head on the bench or the tile and lose consciousness, it's pretty scary. So, I'm going to do a little online research on the best and most effective and efficient, as well as reasonably priced - fall alert. That is, not to mention that two of my kids have already climbed my case about getting AND USING one! I've gotten three, I just didn't use them. So, you're right, it's the sensible thing to do. I could have been on that cold tile for a long time that night.

Well, guess I'll go rustle up some lunch. Not sure what it will be, but I'll find something. It can't be anything I have to bite, so that limits my options somewhat. Soup, I guess. Blessings, all. --Romeena
