I hope everyone had a nice Holiday weekend. I went and visited my Parents graves. Also my Grandparents, Aunt's and Uncles. They are all buried in the same Cemetery and are close to each other. Saw a lot of other graves of people I have known. Brought back a flood of memories for sure.

Well I don't go back to work until tomorrow. I reckon I will go putter around in my shop. Always things to do out there. You know what they say, Idle hands are Lucifers work tools.

May 29, 2018 - Msg 109924: TOM, I am so sorry for the loss of your nephew. How old was he? It's always so hard when we lose a family member. You have lost quite a few, as I have, and I understand how painful that can be. As your scripture above says, all we can do is release them into God's hands.

It's about six kinds of hot here today. A few scattered clouds give momentary shade, but they drift away in a few minutes and the sun begins its onslaught once again. It's 95° by the thermometer, and 99° by the heat index. We will be in triple digits soon, I'm sure. Oh well, that's the price we pay for living in Texas, and it's worth it.

I bought some flower stakes today. The gladiola bulbs I planted randomly two or three years ago are up and I've got seven healthy bloom stalks, with two of them already starting to open. They're about four feet tall, and the wind (when it comes) is bending them and they'll break. So, I reinforced them. They're too pretty to allow them to break! I'm going to get a couple dozen more of those bulbs and just scatter them around in the flowerbeds, and then plant one big area with a bunch of them. They bloom right after my irises finish, so I'll have bright, pretty flowers out there for about twice as long, if the glads do well, and I think they will. My daylilies are coming on strong right now, and while they're all pretty, some of them are just amazingly beautiful. They have a long bloom time too, so my yard is really pretty right now. I do enjoy it so much.

Well, I puttered around out there for quite a while, am hot and tired, and think I'll get a big glass of tea and get in my wheelerette and watch a little TV. Yep, that's what I'm gonna do! Chair, tea, and TV. Sounds like a plan. --Romeena

First off, prayers and uplifting condolences for TOM, So sorry for your loss!

I wanted to ask you all a serious question without pulling the soapbox too far out from under the porch:
Do any of you remember America being THIS bad? After the cancellation of Roseanne, the Publix store boycott by that David Hogg, the liberals and conservatives fighting CONSTANTLY, the blatant lying of the main stream media, crosses being pulled down, girls in the boy scouts, religious freedom being threatened, gun control, Democrats and politicians SUPPORTING the MS-13 gangs, etc., etc.,...was America ever this bad? I am 49 and didnt see the Civil Rights movement and the Vietnam chaos, it seems to me America is in deep, deep, trouble!And to be honest, it has me pretty frightened. We may not have a Civil War like the 1860's, but I got a feeling something big and bad is on the horizon. Push and shove will only be tolerated so far.
Dont mean to bring the porch down, but my wife hates talking about all this, I keep all of this from my 89 year old father and my mother hates talking about it too.

May 30, 2018 - Msg 109929: JOHN--your concerns are valid indeed, but at 68, I lived thru the vietnam era at draft age; and I gotta tell ya, those were rough years. I was in college, and there were constant demonstrations, take overs of campus buildings, even a bomb in a building one night at ASU. It was the time of window stickers such as "America, Love It Or Leave It." There was Kent State, and racial up rest. I was just trying to get my teaching degree, but every day was a new challenge. Let's face it, the only time in recent history when we as a country put aside our differences were the days after the as$as#ination of Kennedy, and the days after 9-11! In fact, tonight on PBS there was a program about the Chinese Americans in California in the 1800s. They basically built the nation's railroads, but then the white workers wanted then run out of the country! I will admit that things do seem pretty bad right now, but none of us lived thru WWII either, with the rationing, and the whole world in conflict, etc. I will also admit, however, that taking God out of everything has indeed taken its toll on the general 'morality' of the country. That's my 2 cents worth on it.

May 30, 2018 - Msg 109931: Good morning, porch! John Masters, you have asked a question that I think is really present in the back of our mind for most of us. My knee-jerk answer to your question is no, it's never been this bad. When I think about it, my considered answer is still not much different. I do remember the WWII years, as I will be 79 in July. I was just a small child, but I remember. I remember my grandma actually crying when she couldn't find her ration-stamp book. Later, she found it between some sofa cushions, and the whole family rejoiced, because it meant they could have coffee and sugar and a couple of other things again! I remember my dad putting yet another patch on a car tire's innertube, which already looked like a patchwork quilt. I knew what Monkey Grip patches were when I was four years old! Times were hard, but the spirit, the attitude of the people was different. Nobody really minded being poor, because pretty much everyone was. My family certainly was, and they laughed about it. There was crime, but not the brutal, senseless things that happen today. Most people had a healthy respect for the police, and the cop on the beat was everybody's friend. The majority of the people went to church or synagogue on Sunday, and God was recognized as the final authority on everything. There was some anti-Semitism even then, but our pastor squelched any hint of it in our church when he reminded us that our Savior was a Jew.

Most households had at least one weapon, and no one was yelling about it. No one was going around shooting up schools and churches then, either. Everyone knew a weapon was for self-defense, and in all those years, my dad never had cause to use his, because there were very few threats. These days, the threats are many and frequent, and I would not be without my gun. I've never used it other than at the gun range, and I hope I never have to use it, but I have it, it's loaded and available, and I will defend myself if necessary. My mother would be shocked at such a statement. So, are things worse now than they used to be? Yes, I would say that they are. Sad, but true. Do I let it upset me or spoil my enjoyment of my life? No, I do not. I'm careful, watchful, I have an effective alarm system, I mind my own business when out and about, and I have personal protection. Other than that, it's business as usual. I don't let fear upset my life. I trust in God to protect me, and I realize that one way He might choose to do that is to give me good aim if I should need it. And that's about all there is to it. --Romeena
May 30, 2018 - Msg 109932: JOHN, I think RO really nailed it, but I want to add one more thing...When one looks at the WHOLE history of our nation there has indeed been much violence, from the Revolutionary War on, but as RO says today's violence seems much more 'senseless.'
Back in the days after the war for independence came the war of 1812, and then came the Mexican war in the 1840s, then the continued 'war' between north and south leading to the great Civil War, then there were the Range wars, cattlemen against the settlers, then WWI, then terrible, bloody strikes, then mobster wars, then WWII, then Korea, then Vietnam etc...you get the idea. But when 38 people are shot in Chicago during a weekend that is suppose to honor our war dead, there is something very wrong with that picture. I have said it before here, but I think the period of 1952 until about 1962 was the best time to be living here. There was relative world peace, most American men were working, many moms (like my own) could stay home and really nurture good families, it was a time of amazing modern appliances, good non GMO food, etc, but yet, there was indeed great tension in the south. OK, my soapbox is going back under the porch.

Hey John, I was waiting for Romeena to respond to your question before I chimed in because she has experienced more than most of us. Now I'm not trying to say nicely that she is old. But she has seen more than most of us, and she has a very good view on things, I think that is a result of A. Good upbringing, and 2.Experiencing the things she has. My initial thought was to say no, I don't think things are worse today than ever. Evil has been here and has competed with good forever it seems. And as MDC said, we have had plenty of wars over the years. I have always liked to think at least, it is because we, as a Nation, try to defeat evil when possible. But that being said, there seems to be an evil within our society that is eating away at us like a cancer. I think the master of evil is doing everything he can to divide and conquer us. Look at how divided we are. Race, Religion, Gender, Politically and all of it's many, many fractions. Add to that the new age of social media, instant news, instant gratification. Where it once took days, or at least many hours for a news event to be reported, it now spreads in minutes, all over the world. The bizarre, the odd, the weird, all seem to capture the headlines. I suppose as Christians, we should not be surprised. It has been spelled out in scripture how things are going to be. Mans hearts will wax cold. Good will become evil, and evil will become good. Are we not seeing that clearly now? But we know there is hope and peace for us. I just hope and pray that all can find that peace. It is needed now as much as ever. Whew, sorry if I got preachy.

MDC, My Daughter and her family are flying into Phoenix today. Then from there they have a 4 hour drive to get to her in-laws ranch in New Mexico. They are just visiting for a few days. Stacey is 6 months along now, so I am sure she is just gonna love that heat. lol

Frankie, I bet that 21 degree cool off felt great. We are knocking on the door of 90 here today, but are supposed to be back in the 70's tomorrow. Our weather has really been up and down temperature wise. But we are right on the doorstep of summer, and will be locked into that hot summer mode for several months. That's ok though. I'll take it any day over the bitter cold of winter.

May 31, 2018 - Msg 109937: Good afternoon, porch. Just got back from a short day trip with our JOY group from church. We went over into Dallas and visited the Bible Museum there. Wow! Beautiful sculptures and paintings, and a wonderful mural depicting the resurrection. It's really something to see.

Asa, references to my age do not bother or offend me in the least. I appreciate your kindness, but I've earned every wrinkle and gray hair, and I make no apologies. If it's true that a real "lady" never reveals her age, well, too bad. That ship has sailed already. I guess I'm out of the "lady" club! Oh well.

You are right, evil has always been with us, and always will be, but I do feel that it's getting worse. Granted, the technology that spreads the news has made us more aware, and quickly, but the violence and ugliness seems worse. I don't remember school bombings and shootings, and the kind of rampant evil that we see these days. I remember years with no a/c, sleeping with the windows open, nobody locked their doors, and cars sat on the driveway with the keys in the ignition. You surely wouldn't do any of that today. So yes, it's worse now, and getting "worser" by the day, but evil has been with us always. As you referenced so clearly, it's inherent in the heart of mankind, and that's why Christ came and died. --Romeena

Did any of you have 'watermelon busts' as kids?
My dad would cut watermelons in long quarters, and we kids would have at it! Seemed like half the neighborhood would be in our backyard. Then we would run thru the lawn sprinker to get 'un-sticky-ed.' Summer fun was so simple then, no big waterparks or bonzai slides; just a slip n slide and a water wiggle! :)

Boy it has only been a three day work week for me and I am already glad to see the weekend. What a shame in this world!

MDC and GF, Oh yes, we had watermelon busts. We lived in the country and there was a field next to our house that the farmer planted watermelon in. He would tell us to help ourselves, just don't go to crazy with them. Great times indeed. I remember my Sister and I had campaigned hard for the newest fad, a "Slip-n-Slide" that we had seen on tv. Well our cousins got one and invited us over to play on it. The commercials looked so fun. I could hardly wait. My first attempt was gonna be a stand up slide like I had seen on the commercials. So I ran and went to slide, my feet went right out from under me, and I fell hard on the back of my head. It actually knocked me out for just a minute. Well that was all for me. I never wanted to see one again. I must have gotten a concussion because I remember throwing up afterwards. lol
I had quite a collection of Tonka Trucks and Matchbox and Hotwheels cars. Remember those? Great memories for sure.

I woke up to some rain and cooler temps this morning. Feels very refreshing indeed.

They are just about done with the first cut of alfalfa for the year here. Makes me glad because my hayfever is in full bloom when they are cutting it. Maybe I will dry up now.

I suppose I best get moving. It used to be I could spring out of bed and be ready to roll. Now I roll out of bed slowly, stand, and stay still for a 5 count to make sure everything is working ok, and then stumble into the bathroom, again, hoping everything is working. lol Sure is fun to get older.

June 01, 2018 - Msg 109942: Good morning, porch! What a wonderful way to wake up! I slept as late as I wanted to (about 8:30) got up (more about that later), Toye Starr was in fi8ne form and made me laugh out loud, stepped into the office and looked out my big window. Beautiful out there, two huge gladiolas in full bloom and many others starting to open, day lilies blooming, seven out of my eight hardy hibiscus plants survived the winter and are loaded with buds, ten beautiful rose-like flowers on my desert rose, and a few scattered real roses (survivors of the "rose rosette disease" that swept through Texas), and the flowerbeds are all weeded and a layer of mulch put down. It really looks pretty. My checkbook, not so much, but that weeding had to be done. I did a little of it, but no way on this earth could I have done it all. In addition to the perimeter beds that surround the yard, there is the big island that's roughly 12x22', the rose island at about 10x20', the rebloomer island that's about 10' in diameter, the iris bed behind the big island at about 6x22', and the cute little crescent bed that's about 4x12'. That's a lot of weeding. So, Eddie to the rescue. Eddie has maintained my yard for about 18 years now, and is a good friend.

It looks so pretty out there, but is already in the 80s, and the air is heavy and humid. I want to clear some spots in the mulch and plant some flower seeds, like dwarf zinnias, snapdragons, marigolds, asters, such as that, but it's going to be very hard for me to breathe that heavy air. I guess I'll give it a shot - I can always quit and come in if it's too hard.

Asa, you made me laugh out loud with your comments about getting up in the morning. Oh, how well I understand that! If I wake up on my left side, I know I'm going to have pain for a couple of hours. If I'm on my right, or my back, I'll be pretty good. (Something to do with the scoliosis, I guess.) Then when I do get up, I stand by the bed until all the joints lock into place! Like Eloise says, we have to stabilize before we mobilize. There will be audible clicking noises from my knees for the first few steps, but once I get moving, I'm good. Age is a boogerbear, but it can be funny if you approach it right. It never bothers me when I get a pitying look, or even an impatient sigh from some young person near me in a checkout line or wherever. I just smile at them, and think to myself "Your turn is coming, dearie, just you wait." My favorites are the beautiful young girls in their low-cut blouses, tight leggings and high spike heels, as they glance over my t-shirt, elastic-waist jeans and Skecher shoes, and look at me like I was a bug with no fashion sense at all. I just smile at them. One girl a while back was so blatant with her disdain, that I had to respond. I just looked her in the eye, smiled and said, "Be careful, sweetie. You can't imagine it now, I know, but someday you'll look like me and dress like this, and you will survive it, and enjoy the comfort. Consider yourself warned." She just huffed at me and stomped off, teetering on her silly high heels. Sometimes it's fun being old.

Well, guess I'll go give those flower seeds a shot. I may not last long, but who knows? I'm actually about six weeks late getting them planted, and the heat may just kill them, but I can try. June 01, 2018 - Msg 109943: Really did enjoy those cool days here. Should be back up to 97 98 this weekend. Went out this early evening and gave my plants around the house a drink. We have some hibiscus out front and they do great. I have a cactus plant that has at least thirty flowers going to bloom by this weekend. The only thing is when they bloom the flower only last for about day only and they are so pretty.
The Oakland A`s had a great game tonight and won 16 to 0. They have a good young team.

June 02, 2018 - Msg 109945: Howdy, porch. Well, I learned something this morning. I went out and tried to plant flower seeds, but didn't get much done. For one thing, I found that Eddie's helper, Tommy, who had supposedly weeded the big island, hadn't done a very thorough job. I have seven hardy hibiscus plants in that bed, and each of them was surrounded by a nest of those nasty little weed things that have about a thousand seeds growing all along their stem. They were huddled under the hibiscus plants, and admittedly, they're hard to see. However, left there for the seeds to mature, the whole bed will soon be a sea of them again. So, I weeded. And weeded. And weeded. When I finally got to where I could start planting flower seeds, the sweat was pouring off of me, I got dizzy when I stood up, and I felt very weak. I planted two little packets of zinnias, had a little flash of smart, and came in the house. It's 96° out there, humidity 46%, heat index is 106°, and it's no place for me to be. Eddie and Tommy will be here again next week, and I have a plan! That plan does not include me risking life and limb out there in that heat. Tommy was laughing at me last week when I remarked that I couldn't take the heat anymore, and he bragged about how he loves the heat, loves to be in the sun. Well, he's going to get a chance to prove it! I'm going to do him a great big favor. We'll see how much he loves the heat! (heehee)

Frankie, which kind of hibiscus do you have - the hardy hibiscus that will come back every year, or the tropical hibiscus that has to be replanted because it freezes? I'm guessing you have the hardy kind, which is what I have. They have the huge, showy, plate-sized blooms and are just so dramatic and pretty.

Well, a cool shower, a shampoo, then a big glass of tea and a light lunch, and then watch a MASH marathon on TV. Sounds like my kind of afternoon! Blessings, friends --Romeena

You can look up some of Abraham Lincoln's concerns about the future of our country because of the rampant wickedness. So, it's always been with us. What hasn't always been with us is the denial that obvious evil is really evil. Just let it be on someone's favorite TV show for a few months, and that person will be okay with it. It really is stunning. Our country shall reap what it's sown.

June 02, 2018 - Msg 109947: Hey everyone, sorry I have been off the porch for awhile but been very busy..we took my mom in law to Ft. Worth last weekend to attend her sister's funeral. It was a quick trip because she can only stand being in the car and out in public for so long. She is confined to a wheelchair now and needs a lot of help. We picked her up at the facility she resides in, which is about 2 hours from Ft. Worth, and just the 2 hour drive was tough on her. All went fairly well, though. Romeena, it was very hard to be so near to you and not be able to meet up for lunch. It just wasn't possible with mom in law. I also really wanted to visit my relatives in Waco but couldn't.

I have been working everyday since I returned, too. We lost another nurse, who is having serious back issues, and one is on vacation, so that leaves four nurses total to cover every day and every shift. They are looking for a nurse but it isn't easy to find one who wants to work with kids like our's, unfortunately. It's really too bad because it is a wonderful job. Our census is very low. We have a total of 12 girls and 29 boys which is lower than ever. The good news is that the air conditioning is still running..not very well, but we aren't dying.

I enjoyed reading some of your memories. G-F, I remember the Funny Face drink mix very well. My favorite was the Rootin Tootin Raspberry. My mom made up this little game with me when I was about 3 to 5, in which if I said Raspberry, she would tickle me..so she would try to find ways to trick me into saying, "raspberry". One of the ways was to use the phrase.."rootin'...tootin'..." and being the little one I was, I would just have to yell, "raspberry!!"...and then she would chase me down and tickle me. Mom was such a fun mom in those years. Later she had some mental health issues and depression and things weren't the same. Those early childhood memories mean the world to me, though.

MDC, I loved the Water Wiggle!! Played with that one a lot in the summer. By the way, I haven't been to Port Aransas since hurricane Harvey. I hear it is still pretty bad, I just don't have the heart to go see. Very sad, really.

Well, Erin had a terrible stomach flu the last week of school and missed three days. I didn't want to send her back but she had to take a chemistry test. The child lost 15 pounds of fluid in two days and scared me. She was really dehydrated. I took her to the doc because she had to have a written dr;s excuse for school and doc said the bug is rampant. I am hoping I don't get it, but so far so good. Crazy having a bad stomach flu in June!

Better think about getting ready for bed..have to be up early for work in the am.

Romeena, my hibiscus must be the hardy type. I cut them back after winter with the freeze and they do fine. Some of my neighbors have a hard time growing them but mine have been here for at least 25 years. I think the roots are so solid and down deep in the ground and very strong. In the summer I have to trim them back sometimes because they grow so tall that they reach under the eve of the house. The flowers are beautiful and the humming birds just love them.

Staying inside to keep cool. Been watching some good Bonanza shows on the inspirational station.

Folks, I'll be honest with ya'. I have been seeing and visiting the Porch a lot lately, but I have remained silent because I have been going thru a lot myself. I prefer to keep it quiet out of respect for all of you. Translated, that means I have seen a lot of what all of you are going thru and I don't want to unload my trials amidst your own. Yes, I realize and know that all of you have open arms to each other's problems and the Porch is the place to set down some of our burdens. But I have had a lot and it's been like someone doubled up their fist, rared way back and let me have it with a knockout right cross. Some things in life you see coming....and some, you would never even dream possible.

Ok, that is that.

Yep, we got a really impressive storm last night, with enough rain that two dry birdbaths are now completely full, so we must have gotten at least an inch of rain, maybe more. Those birdbaths are over two inches deep, but they're dish-shaped, so that skews the calculation a bit. I had a good rain gauge, but a squirrel demolished it, bless his little buttons.

Billy Ray, your comment on the evil in our midst is spot on. "Everybody's doing it, so it must not be too bad." We tried to use that one on our parents when we were kids, and sometimes it even worked. It's no different with adults. It's based on a principle that's used everywhere, such as in advertising. The Marlboro Man convinced a lot of people that smoking made you really cool. The liquor industry doesn't show you films of a drunk in a gutter, or a drunken father abusing his family, or a woman buying cigarettes or alcohol before she buys groceries for her children. Make something look cool, show attractive or smart people indulging, whether it's booze, tobacco, or s*x (aberrant or otherwise) and people will accept it. I know I'm using a lot of words here, just to say what you already said so well in just a few lines, Billy Ray. You are absolutely right.

Well, guess I'd better go feed my little companion. She's sitting here looking at me with big pitiful eyes. She's not starving, she has kibble in her bowl, but she's wanting her wet food, too. I have a prayer need I wanted to bring to the porch and maybe I need some objectivity about it. I have mentioned Sean's same-s#x struggles..well, his best friend is a girl named Alana and they have been friends since they were three. She is in a relationship with a controlling, mentally ill young man. I have known the young man since he was a child and I took him to church every sunday until he was an adult. I love him, but he was raised by a very troubled alcoholic mother and now he shows signs of being toubled and ill himself. Sean gets to see the show first-hand and it is bothering him because they are both his friends. He really loves Alana, though, so he is having a tough time seeing it. Here is the thing..he wants her to leave her boyfriend and consider being with him. He would treat her like a queen and they would be happy in many ways. I think that if she broke up with the current young man, she would consider it, even though for the obvious reasons it might be a terrible mistake. I don't know what to think so I am leaving it in the Lord's hands and praying about the situation. If any of you feel so led, please mention the situation before God. Thanks, friends.

Well, I have to be on my way to work but wanted to check in. Tomorrow I am finally off for a stretch and then we are off to Blanco to swim in the river for a couple of day! yahoo

June 04, 2018 - Msg 109959: Hahaha, Asa! I'll take that as a compliment. Also, it reminds me of a little story from about 16 or 17 years ago. It was just a few years after my husband passed, and I was about to make one of my trips to Florida to visit my son and DIL. I still had Sugarplum at the time, and she was going with me, of course. One night at work a co-worker asked me if I was taking the Plum with me, and when I said I was, a sweet little patient aide spoke up and said "In an airplane? Your dog is going with you?" I said she was, in a little carrier that would ride beneath the seat in front of me, inside the cabin. The wide-eyed little girl said "Lordy me, here I am, twenty years old, and never been no farther than Ft. Worth, and sure ain't been in no airplane, and here your dog is flying all the way to Florida! When I die, I want to come back as your dog!" It had never dawned on me that anyone would find that odd, but she surely did! I guess I do spoil my furkids, but that's half the fun. Believe me, for the joy she brings to me, it's a bargain at any price, and I know you understand that.

Well, the SS class friend whose wound dressings we three nurses are changing daily has a doctor appt tomorrow, and it's my turn. I'll be driving her out to Grapevine to her doctor, and I hope he gives her a bit of a lecture. We have tried, but she gets her back up a little, and doesn't listen to us, and something has to change. The wound is healing pretty well, no infection and it's gradually closing, from the bottom up. The problem is she just sits in her recliner and eats and drinks cokes, and doesn't get up and move around other than to wash and to answer nature's calls. Oh well. It's her decision, we can only encourage, since we're not there in any official capacity. We encourage, she ignores.

Well, guess I'll go watch a little TV and finish off the last of a really good little watermelon I bought. It was one of those little ones, smaller than a soccer ball, seedless, and it's really good and sweet. I love watermelon! Raises my blood sugar, but then, that's what insulin is for! She was having so much pain in the back of her neck and head. Dr. did a ct scan on her neck and head and it looked ok. They believe it is muscle and nerves. We brought her back home in the ambulance and she is still in pain.

Frankie, Prayers for sure for your Mom. I'm sorry to read she is suffering such pain.

Romeena, I sure meant it as a compliment. The love you have for your Furkids is truly touching. And it speaks volumes about you as a person. At least in my book.

MDC, Yes, the temp swings here have been dramatic this spring. But now we are entering the hot zone. At least for us. I imagine a scorching hot day for us might be sweater weather for you folks in Arizona. Stacey and her family got back safe last night. Well at least most of them. The three older ones are flying back home on Friday. That'll be interesting seeings how Mariah, the oldest at 12, Amy is 10, And Cache is 8 are going to do. Their Aunt will be able to go on the plane with them to get them seated, so it shouldn't be to bad. But my Stacey is a nervous wreck worrying about it. Matt said it will be a good experience for them, and he is probably right.

GF, I hope you are doing ok my friend. You sure have been quiet. All is well?

We are having an ISO audit today. All in all it's a fun day. NOT!!
