February 28, 2018 - Msg 109331: Good afternoon. Just got home from teaching ESL up at the church. I really enjoy that. The folks are so kind and want so badly to learn. Some seem to just zip right through, and others get stuck and just don't seem to advance at all. I think it's true that there is a talent, or a gift, for learning languages. Part of it is motivation, I'm sure, but I know one very nice man who has been attending faithfully for three years, and is still struggling so hard, really hasn't made much progress at all. Then there was a young lady who spoke almost no English, breezed through my friend's beginner class, moved into my intermediate class and stayed about four months, and moved on into the advanced class. I was talking with her a couple of weeks ago, she's quite fluent, and her accent sounds more American than Spanish. I'd say she has a gift for languages. Actually, English is now her third language, she already spoke two when she came to us. Amazing.

We've got rain again. I'm not complaining, we'll have a prettier spring and crops will do well, but I'm sure glad Joe left me his pump, or my yard would be drowning.

Asa, did you ever read "Maggie and Jiggs" in the newspaper comics? Anytime you mention gout, I think of that comic strip, because Jiggs sat around about half the time with his foot wrapped in a big bulky bandage and propped up on something. He loved corned beef and cabbage and would eat it, and then Maggie would yell at him because she considered that dish to be kind of low class, and she wanted so badly to be high class. She also would tell him that was what gave him gout. Maybe it did, I don't know, but when I think of gout, I think of old Jiggs!

Well, guess I'll go rustle up some lunch. I've got the makings for some good tuna salad, maybe I'll just make that and make me a sandwich with some good nutty/seedy bread I've got on hand. Yum! --Romeena

Been a fairly busy day. I drove with Sean into Corpus Christi today so he could go to a job interview and we had lunch at Chipotle. Do any of you have Chipotle in your area? Its kind of a healthy version of burritos, taco, etc. I love their burritos and I can get them totally vegan. Anyway, had to do the grocery shopping, cooking, laundry, so not much rest but that's ok. Tomorrow I will try to get more. All I have is to get Erin to and from school and see the chiropractor at 3. Of course, I am toying with the idea of doing some spring cleaning and getting rid of somethings that can be donated for the church rummage sale in April. We are trying to raise money for some of our members who are going on a missions trip to Dominican Republic this summer.

Well, got something healthy simmering on the stove and clothes to put in the dryer...hope you all are having a great evening.

When watching Man in a Hurry the other day, I noticed that Wally mentioned Moon Mullens. Now there is one that i used to read.
BOO-- yes we do Chipotle about once a month. Good eatin for sure.
I wanted to mention to you that I have been trying some melatonin "experimenting." Just before bed I chew up a 1 mg tablet. The Nature's Bounty brand I use is basically tasteless. Once chewed up, I get it under my tongue as a "sub-lingual" dose to take affect right away, then I also swallow one whole, and it takes affect a little later after I'm sleeping
a while. I have been sleeping for 6 hours now before awaking. Just a thought for ya to try.
ALL-- I have been getting good results on my monthly blood panels that my heart failure doctor has been having me do.. . creatine, etc have been good. Now that I know that I have HF, I am trying my best to live life to the fullest, do some cardio workout 4 times a week, and thank God for each day! :)

Hey Boo, There is a Chipotle in our neck of the woods, but I have never eaten there. I will give it a try one of these days. I was thinking spring cleaning my own self, but they are calling for a major winter storm for us this weekend. Anywhere from 8 to 12 inches down here in the valleys. I suppose we need the moisture, but my back doesn't need to deal with this crud. Oh well, my bellyaching won't change it.

Spot, sounds like a good breakfast, but double up on that limp bacon please. That's how I dig it too.

MDC, Do you take any probiotics? My Daughter swears by them, and has been after me to take them. I wish I knew how to end these gout attacks. This one has not crippled me totally, but it is still hanging on since Monday. Not as bad, but still there. I have tried avoiding all the foods they tell you to avoid, and eating all the stuff they tell you to eat, but I never see any change. The one thing I do know that will trigger a flare is if I drop a few pounds. And the more I drop, and the faster I drop it, the more intense is the flare. Go figure. I have even managed to get my uric acid levels down to the normal range, but I still get gout. Good on you for doing all you can to deal with your condition. Everything I have read about it suggests that you can manage it fairly well. Prayers my friend.

Well today is supposed to be a warm before the storm day, so I reckon I'll try and get some outside jobs done.

March 01, 2018 - Msg 109342: Thanks MDC, I take a sublingual melatonin most nights but the idea of sublingual and another po is a good idea. I will have to try that. I usually take a very small dose, though..1/4 of a 3mg tablet is all I need and if I take more I am too sleepy the next day. I have one of those systems that needs very little of most things. For instance, on the rare occasion that I need something for pain, I can take one Ibuprofen and it does the job.

Try the Chipotle, Asa. Even Sean loves it and he is very picky. You go down the line and they fix what you order to your liking. I most always get the tofu chorizo burrito with brown cilantro rice, black beans (all their beans are vegan), the sautéed onion and peppers, the amazing corn salsa, and a little avocado. The thing is BIG. I can never eat the whole thing in one sitting. They also have this amazing vinigarette dressing that I like to drizzle on my burrito (big calories but I use it sparingly). They have meat options..beef and chicken and queso, sour cream, different kinds of salsa, etc. I'll bet you would really like it.

Well, this is making me hungry but I already had lunch..better change the subject.

The weather here is really beautiful today..cool and dry with plenty of sunshine and everything is turning a lovely bright green. The lawn is getting just beautiful already. I hope we don't have a late freeze.

Asa, you mentioned probiotics and I have done quite a bit of looking into it. What I seem to be learning is that "gut flora" is very important but the most important way to obtain good flora is by what you eat, not a probiotic supplement. The right fiber, fruits and veggies, etc. Beans so a great job but it take a little time to adjust to them. Prebiotics are important, too, and starches are the way you get those..plant starches, that is, especially cold ones. Sounds crazy, but cold potatoes (like in potato salad) and cold rice, in particular, or you can buy potato starch and add it to your food a little at a time. Gout is absolutely a diet issue, as are most illnesses, and healthy bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract is very important. Maybe it would help you to look into it. I suggest looking up Dr. Michael Gregor. He has a website that addresses most issues.

that was set up in a mall parking lot just a few miles from our home. We came upon the booth where you have to shoot out the red star on a card with the bb gun. I knew I would lose, but I played just to say this to the carney, "These sites aren't bent are they?" He just smiled and said, "You know how many times I've heard that?" But then he also proceeded to tell me that he has all 8 seasons on DVD!!! And, yes,
I left the least little bit of red still on the dang card!

I finally have a day off tomorrow but will be busy catching up and getting ready for a trip out of town. I don't know if I told you that Bruce lost another uncle last week. So, we had the funeral of his uncle Pete 2 weeks ago and now we will have the funeral of his uncle Lloyd this week. We are driving his two sisters up with us (3 and a half hour drive) and they are both severely hearing impaired and very loud talkers. I will get a headache, for certain.

Well, I think I will get a healthy snack and watch a little TAGS before turning in.

Found out will be taking care of mother in law while out of town...well, Bruce, his sisters and I will. She is confined to a wheelchair, is incontinent, and has gained a significant amount of weight in the past several months so it could be a real challenge. We will be driving her home the day after the funeral so it will be adding at least 4 hours to our trip. All in all, we will be on the road 9 to 10 hours on Wed. Just had to pick Erin up from school. She was having a bad panic attack..hasn't had one in months but she said she was sitting in the lunch room and there was so much noise and it set off a panic attack. School was nearly our so I brought her home. She went to the nurses office but nurse was at lunch so I picked her up.. I'm telling you, ever since that awful experience with the MRI, she has had this kind of thing...not often, thankfully, and I had hoped it was all over. Poor girl was crying when I got there. Its an awful feeling for her and I don't know what else to do about it. She finished the counseling and was doing well. Anxiety and panic disorder seem to be an epidemic among the young. I wonder if it is environmental, dietary, hereditary or what. I sometimes feel like I am trying to slay a dragon while wearing a blindfold.

Anyway, she is calm now and very tired so I told her to take a nap.

Went to town today with St.Susan, to the natural grocers store for a few things. I wanted to find a good vegan omega 3 supplement with DHA. I found one made from algae that was highly recommended. It is supposed to keep my brain from shrinking...good luck. lol

I still have washing and packing to do so break over. Hope you are all having a good day. Where is Romeena and for heaven's sake, where in the world is Sterling?

I think there are some folks who have medical issues who might benefit from cannabis treatment, but to make it ok for recreational use, I think that is not going to bode well. There are those who say "look, the stuff is everywhere and being used by a lot of folks anyway, so what's the big deal"? These are the same folks though who say that outlawing guns is going to magically get all the guns off the street. SMH

March 07, 2018 - Msg 109376: Good morning, porch. I'm here, and okay, just been busy. Tillie still has issues - the "low oil" icon lights up and the message bar flashes "oil pressure low - stop engine", while a bell dings. It just does it now and then, usually when I take my foot off the accelerator. When I accelerate again, it all stops. I've had the oil checked, and checked it myself, and it's full. So, I can only conclude that it's a problem with the oil pump, or more likely, an oil pressure sensor that's malfunctioning. Since they had to remove the oil pan to get to the tranny, the most obvious thing that comes to mind is that they didn't secure the sensor in the oil pump properly when they put it all back. So, back it goes this morning, to the transmission place. I gave it a couple of weeks, to let the computer rebuild its database after being disconnected, but it's got almost 100 miles on it since the work was done, and that's enough time. I hope they know that I don't intend to pay for whatever this takes to fix it. Enough is enough.

SPOT, thanks for the good breakfast, and for always remembering to allow for soft bacon for me and Asa. It surely is good!

Asa, I guess you and I are just blessed. No 'lergics in this house, either, now that my kids are all out and gone. Three of the four have seasonal allergies, one son really has a problem, and even the fourth, my younger daughter, has them at times, though not very bad. I have none. No drug, food, contact or environmental allergies at all. Dale had some seasonal allergies, so I guess that's where the kids got them, but I just sail right through the pollen season, no problems.

I will be so glad when the weather settles down. Every day I have to switch between a/c and heat! It gets cold at night, to the point of needing heat, and it still feels good all morning, but by mid-afternoon, it gets too warm and I have to switch to a/c, and then back again around midnight. Ridiculous.

Well, today is ESL day, guess I'll drop Tillie off at the tranny place, Eloise will pick me up there and we'll go to the church to teach ESL. Then we'll get some lunch, go get our "toesies" done and then back to get the car, I hope. Toye Starr was scheduled for a dental cleaning this morning, and probably a couple of extractions, but she woke up in the middle of the night and threw up for some reason, so I canceled her dental appointment, will reschedule it later. Poor little girl.

Romeena, So sorry Tillie is still misbehaving, but it sounds like you have a good grasp on what is ailing her this time. I hope it was an easy fix. I do get allergics, but usually not until late May or early June. That's about the time the first cut of alfalfa is made around here and that always seems to kick them in gear. They are kind of odd. I never really had much issue with them as a kid. Then when I got into my early twenties they would really hit me hard for the first half of the summer. But now I have noticed the last few years they seem to be less and less a problem. Of course, now that I have said that, look out. lol

MDC, I have epoxied more than my share of shop floors over the years. I would say the two biggest things are prep and product. Make sure they clean your floor very well. We always prefer painting a newly poured floor because cleaning an existing one was not always easy. Especially if there was any oil stains or other stains. We would prefer using an acid to etch the concrete, but that can get pricey, and smelly. So just make sure they prep it real good and that they use a good quality epoxy. Otherwise in a year or two down the road you won't be happy. I bet GF can Amen me on that.

Bill Medwin, I was thinking that same thing about Toye Starr. She wasn't looking forward to seeing the tooth Doctor so she put a stop to it. I hope she is feeling better today Ro.

I'm glad they got the house boarded up Frankie. I have never lived next to a drug house, but I have lived next to an alcoholic, and that wasn't fun atall! I imagine a drug house is much much worse.

Tom and GF, I hope the storms are not hitting you guys too bad. We are gonna be pushing 60 here today, and I am a-ok with that.

March 08, 2018 - Msg 109385: Yes, As in the plumbing world cleanliness is next to Godliness in that floor job... I remember doing our huge warehouse and garage at work. The building was the old post office maintenance building and garage, so there was ALOTA prep cleaning that needed to be done first!..And a long drying time too before we could start. But I guess in Arizona the heat would help with that.
But I do have to warn ya about the fumes and smell it will give you a REAL BUZZ!...So I hope you can keep open the doors and windows for a long time or you guys will be like Cheech & Chong....Lol

March 08, 2018 - Msg 109386: For sure on the fumes GF, especially if etching with acid. Respirators are required. One other thing we experienced MDC, that may interest you in your hot Arizona. We were dealing with a large fleet of heavy vehicles, and we found that when they came in to the shop after being on the road for any length of time, the heat from the tires was causing the epoxy to peel off the floor. We never did figure out if it was poor prep, cheap epoxy. or just the nature of the beast. We all kind of thought that the last idea was the most likely culprit. We suggested to the powers that be that we just paint the floors with a quality floor paint instead of the epoxy, but I think the cost was more than they could handle. So as hot as you get there, you may want to at least bring this up with your contractor. Just a thought friend.

Asa, about the truck tires peeling the epoxy off the floors, would it have helped to let the trucks sit for about an hour before putting them in the shop, to let the tires cool down? Obviously, I know nothing about it, just wondering....

we've got spring-like weather, and everything is trying to bud out. I've got a stand of daffodils out back that's just beautiful, and in a bed along the driveway in the front, there's a large patch of little dwarf yellow daffodils that are just cute as can be. They're just like regular big daffodils, but only about 7 inches tall, and the little flowers are small and bright and so sweet. I plant things and forget about them, and sometimes it takes a year or two before they spread and make enough of a showing to get noticed. I love it when that happens. Maybe that's why I like surprise lilies so much. You never know where they're going to pop up.

Eloise and I had lunch at Pie Five today, one of my favorite places to eat. Actually, it's my #1 favorite pizza place. For 6.99, you get to order your own pizza built to your request. You pass through a line, start with the type of crust you want. Then you choose the sauce, and go from there. There are at least 20 or 25 things you can choose from, and they'll put some of every one of them if you want it. My pizza had thin crispy crust, marinara sauce, fresh spinach, shreddd mozzarella, feta cheese, ricotta, pepperoni, black olives, mushrooms, green olives, sun-dried tomatoes, red and green pepper strips, sliced onion, artichoke hearts and a dusting of parmesan. It's a 10" crust, and with all that stuff on it, I could only eat half. I had them build two just alike while they were at it, so I brought a pizza and a half home. At 6.99 each, I spent $15, had lunch and will get at least two more meals, maybe three out of what I brought home. Pretty cheap, and soooo good! I've learned how to reheat pizza, and it turns out as good or better than fresh. Just put a little olive oil in a non-stick skillet over very low heat. Put the pizza flat in the pan, cover with a lid, and give it a few minutes, just until the toppings feel warm to the touch. Don't let the bottom scorch. It will be light brown and crispy, and the cheese and toppings will be just like fresh. The microwave always makes the crust tough, but this method doesn't. Works every time.

We are getting a coating with a 10 year warranty.
The estimator used a meter to check for moisture,
and said our concrete was good to go. Also, we always used cardboads under our VEE-hicles,
so oil spots are not a problem.
Afer they prep it Friday, they will then wait 10 days to let it dry, etc, and told us to park outside during that time. Also, once it is laid down, he said to wait 5 days before parking on it,
AND even suggested what Romeena said...for the first month, park outside for about an hour, then drive the car in after that. Thanks for all the advice. I am praying it will work out great.

Frankie, I'm sure your end of the porch has some neat little pizza places. We have a place here called
Oregano's (wouldn't ya guess, ha) and their thin crust is the best around!

You know I had to ask him about Babe’s chicken. He kinda gave me a funny look, How do know about Babe’s? I love that place!....I told him I have a Mayberry friend who says their chicken is Chickin’ Lickin’ Good!...He was a Very nice guy and had a nice Stetson hat to boot too!.....

March 09, 2018 - Msg 109391: Good afternoon, porch! It was morning when I sat down at this computer, and now it's afternoon, and I have had neither breakfast nor lunch. Hmmm. Is that an indication of my priorities?

Babe's Chicken is the best! I'm a good chicken-fryer, and I can't produce anything better than Babe's. It started out a little over thirty years ago, in a little one-stoplight town on the outskirts of Dallas, in an old auto garage. It still has the original cracked concrete floors, exposed roof trusses, and foggy windows. It's not very big, has a lot of mismatched tables and chairs, and a line out the door whenever it's open. They have put benches and lawn chairs along the sidewalk outside, and have big industrial fans in the summer and heat blowers in the winter to make the wait tolerable. There's a tiny place to wait inside, holds about six people, but the rest is full of tables and chairs. For several years, that was the only location, then he began to expand. I think there are about eight locations now, and he has opened a place called Sweetiepie's in another little town, specializing in steaks. The restaurants are still family-owned, and the name Babe's came from the name the owner used for his wife. He's a big old bear of a man, motorcycle rider, and obviously has a lot of savvy because he's building a little empire here, serving the best fried chicken around. Just Google "Babe's Fried Chicken in Texas" and you'll find a lot to read about it.

G-F, I'm not at all surprised that your friend's Texas buddy came to help him. That's what friends do in Texas, and I would hope, everywhere else as well. And, anybody wearing a Stetson hat has to be a good guy. Love Stetsons!

MDC, Tillie is still in the shop, and will be through next week, I'm told. It seems that there is a bolt in the bottom of the engine that has become stripped, and is keeping the driveshaft from powering the oil pump properly, thus the "low oil pressure" messages. Apparently they have to pull the engine to replace it, and the bolt must be made in a machine shop. The shop manager told me they will "absorb" part of the expense, since it's "possible" that the bolt was stripped when they worked on the car the last time. Possible? I'd say it was more than probable. Be assured, he and I will be having a conversation about this. I want the work finished and proven first, and then we'll talk. I hope he's planning to be very, very absorbent. I will pay part of it, because the car is 14 years old, it's an aluminum bolt in a steel bolt-hole (which seems like a design flaw to me) and some wear on the bolt is certainly possible. However, I think the mechanic that put that bolt back in place either had it cross-threaded, or just bore down on it too hard, and stripped it. As I said, we will talk. When I'm done, he will know that I will be writing a review online. What that review says about his shop is entirely up to him.

Frankie, there's an upscale burger place here called Five Guys, and they make wonderful burgers and great fries. I'm not sure, but I think Pie Five is another enterprise for the same folks. The pizzas are seriously good, all the ingredients are fresh, and you just stroll down the line, like at a Subway shop, and choose what you want. The price is the same, whether you just get sauce and cheese, or some of everything on the line. Naturally, being the veggie lover that I am, I get some of everything!
