September 05, 2017 - Msg 108152: Boo, not to deflate your progress, but I'd have Bruce get a meter and keep a eye on your voltage levels, if the voltage drops too much it will burn out the motors and compressors on your A/C and other things... Sorry, just a heads up, as they try to restore power, there can be voltage spikes too that would damage your electronics and your computer... You Guys concur Asa & SPOT?....Maybe SPOT can give you the proper line voltage and Amp levels for your region....I don't remember what levels will start causing damage, so maybe they can help with that....Just a thought 🤔

September 05, 2017 - Msg 108155: I concur with GF Boo. My first thought was maybe you only had 1 leg of your power on. And most a/c's run on 220 (at least the compressor). Probably a good idea to keep the main off until things stabilize. It must be pretty miserable there with no a/c.

Been pickin peaches out back. Yep, they are fuzzed up good. :)

September 05, 2017 - Msg 108157: Thanks, Asa. It can get pretty miserable with the heat but we do have a generator that we can turn on for periods of time. My sister lent me a pirtable AC, but its small and barely cools anything. We are ok, though. The needs are so great here that I understand we might have to wait awhile. I am so very appreciative of all the help we are getting. Hundreds of truckers and workers from all over the country. I saw some from Indiana yesterday. They start early and end late. You can't go down a street without seeing a truck, it seems. Such a blessing.

I must say I am worried about those who will be in the path of Irma. It makes me sad to think about this happening to others. There are so many people near here who have lost so much.

Praying for all folks along the coast.

Sure do appreciate the good wishes & prayers concerning Irma.As things stand right now, we should get tropical storm winds or a possible Cat 1 in my part of the state. Asa,I would go out on a limb and say that things shouldn't get terribly bad in Charlotte-some winds & perhaps a good bit of rain, but nothing like the full force of a major storm. These hurricanes do spawn off tornadoes,so that is a concern for the Carolinas. Will be praying for your daughter & all of us in Irma's path. Poor Florida.

Boo, I sure hope the A/C problem is an easy fix & that your power trouble gets resolved. You must be about ready to pull your hair out, girl! The aftermath of a hurricane is a really good lesson in patience,so I've learned! September 08, 2017 - Msg 108178: Good morning, porch! Mary Wiggins, it's good to see you returning, after your recent visit. I hope this becomes a habit.

I had a phone call from our TOM last night. He was checking on me, and on my son who lives in Florida. I'm fine, of course, we just got a little rain from Harvey, and my son is planning to stay put and ride out Irma in Florida. He lives in Mt. Dora, which is about 30 miles north of Orlando, so the storm is expected to diminish somewhat by the time it gets that far into the state. I hope he's right! He's right in the center of the state, so a good distance from the coast. No storm surges there, but they could get a lot of rain, and of course damaging winds. They've ridden out hurricanes before, and he feels they'll be able to do it again. Prayers are appreciated! TOM should be safe from Irma, where he's located. It should be pretty well worn out by the time it gets that far north.

Boo, I hope your a/c is an easy fix. Remember the old nursing rule - think from the simple to the complex. Don't get in line and wait for a repairman, when it could be just a fuse. Also, if you do have to call someone, make it someone you know and trust. At crisis times like this, unscrupulous people crawl out of the woodwork, and you could be told the whole compressor is shot, when it's something simple like a fuse, a breaker, a start/run capacitor - there are a lot of relatively inexpensive things that could be causing the problem. I called David, who helps his father-in-law a lot with installs and repairs, and his guess is a capacitor, as a place to start after checking fuses. He asked if your thermostat is digital. If it is, that would reduce the chance that on-again, off-again power has caused damage, because it has a five-minute delay feature on it. I know our HVAC guys understand this - I don't, I'm just repeating what David said. Anyway, the main thing is to call someone you know you can trust.

Well, the robins have decided that today is the day to strip my American Beautyberry bushes. They're on those bushes like fleas on a camel! By evening, there won't be any berries left at all, and there will be some very fat robins. There will be a lot of purple splotches on the sidewalks and local cars, though!

Happy Birthday to Laci, our porch baby, all grown up! Seems like just last week when she was born. Enjoy her, Possum. Give her a hug from all her porch "aunties", please!

Well, guess I'll go feed Princess Pink Ears, and maybe scare up something for myself. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Son could have gone there and stayed in her office probably, but he didn't want to leave their little dog alone, and I don't blame him. September 11, 2017 - Msg 108195: Good morning, porch. It is so calm and beautiful here this morning, it's hard to believe what Florida and the states above it have been through, are going through, and are about to experience. Prayers for all concerned, for sure.

I talked to my son this morning, he says it was a rough night, but apparently he has no damage, at least none that he has seen from inside the house. The lake behind his house has risen several feet, is lapping at the edge of his actual lawn, but would have to rise about six or seven feet more to reach his house, which it's not likely to do, as the rain is decreasing rapidly. Also, there's a very small channel at one point on the lake, which the water hasn't reached yet, but when and if it does, that channel leads to another lake that's lower than the one his house is on, so the overflow would go there for a while. They think that little channel was originally carved out by gators moving between the two lakes. The lake is as round as a pancake, and is about a half mile in diameter, so it can hold a lot of water. My son doesn't know yet whether his boat dock and patio on the lake are damaged, as trees block his view of the dock from the house, and he hasn't ventured outside. Still a lot of wind, light debris flying, and rain.

Well, guess I'll go tune in the Weather Channel, scare up a bit of lunch, and do my own version of storm-watching. Stay safe, everyone. SPOTTY, work your magic. --Romeena

Lord, please be with those who are still dealing with this monster storm, and those who will have to do the cleanup and repair. That's going to be a long, hard, and costly job. Just think - people are going to be cleaning spoiled food out of their freezers and refrigerators in about five states. Just that part of it alone is mind-boggling. Then there will be piles of ruined carpet and furniture, stacks of soggy drywall, and all the ruined roofing - the trucks will run their wheels off, hauling all that debris away. Possum, so glad you weathered the weather ok. I talked to my Daughter and she said all was well for her. I hope Boo and her family are doing ok. And Spot, try and stay dry feller. I hope you didn't lose to much power.

A couple of months ago I posted about a small plane that had crashed on our Freeway killing 2 couples on board. Very sad. Well yesterday another small plane lost power right after he took off from the same airport (Ogden Hinckley) and he had to try and land it on a 4 lane highway just a few hundred yards away. He was unable to do so without hitting a car on the road, but fortunately neither the pilot, nor the driver of the car were injured. Amazing considering the plane caught on fire shortly afterwards and in minutes was engulfed in flames. Same type of airplane as the previous crash, a Bonanza Beechcraft. I'm glad no one was killed in this one.

GF I don't follow baseball all that much, but it sounds like your Indians are on a tear right now. They are making up for the Browns dismal play, you reckon? :)

Well I hope and pray everyone affected by all the recent storms are recovering ok. I was listening to Rush yesterday and he was reading a report saying that so far about 80% of all the help that has gone out in Texas has come from Christians and Christian churches. He went on to make a very interesting observation that all of the so called social justice groups like black lives matter and such were no where to be found out there on the front lines helping out. Not surprising but interesting.

http://www.surryarts.org/mayberrydays/index.html
With all that has been going on, it's kinda hard this year. But once I get there it all goes away for a short period of time as we live in the "Mayberry State of Mind" for the weekend...Do I get an Amen Maude!....

The Tribe goes for #22 tonight Crazy time in the Cleveland Right now, but they have earned it!...Maybe even our TOM is watching too?...🤷🏼‍♂️

Hope Boo is doing Ok, we are still in prayer for their struggles down there...

Asa...I hear tell of a pipe "T" repair Seminar in Mt. Airy next weekend. 😉 Tell your Boss you "NEED" to attend that seminar, and then you can write it all off as a "BUSINESS" trip....😉 (Miss Alma will supply the sprinklers st her Mayberry Motor Inn) ..We can study at the Gazebo....;) We also can do a "Business" meeting at Little Richards BBQ right up the street...

September 14, 2017 - Msg 108210: Hey Y'all- That's great news about your daughter,Asa. The Carolinas dodged a bullet with that storm. Looks like Jose might head up toward New England, which makes sense to me,seeing as how he's been acting like a drunken Ted Kennedy out in the ocean! What a crazy track that thing has taken!
I would LOVE to attend Mayberry Days, G-F-have yet to be able to make it to one. Will have to see if I can swing it.
Well, it's been a doozy of a day,so gonna go hit the ol' ironing board soon. Goodnight,Porchsters!

September 15, 2017 - Msg 108211: Hey Possum, glad you were out of the paths of both this time! You're too groovy to be a wet possum like that! ha
ROMEENA--could you perhaps email or call BOO and see if all is OK? Thanks.
Are you still doing the home health appts?
GF--for some reason today I thought of this song
regarding the upcoming Mayberry Days (as well as all the "cajun navy" etc helping with rescues):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybf3mYZyDhc
And congrats to your Tribe on the record winning streak!
TOM, what do you think of that?
One thing that really pains my heart in the coverage of the hurricanes is when they show flooded bisinesses. Yesterday there was footage of a Houston McDonald's with water up to the counter tops, and a dental office with about 3 feet of water in it. I pray for those small business owners! So sad.
ASA--I like GF's idea! Better yet, make it a "sprinkler valve replacement convention!" :)
Well, take care my friends. Hang in there all!

September 15, 2017 - Msg 108212: For those concerned about Boo,she has been posting on Facebook recently.Haven't gotten any personal updates, though.

possum again

P.S. I don't think a possum can be groovy & wet at the same time, MDC- ha!

September 15, 2017 - Msg 108213: Well, I saw on the news that Dallas removed a statue of Robert E. Lee from a park yesterday. I cannot believe that they are trying to 'erase' history like this.
They could have simply put an additional plaque on the base stating
the nature of the statue. Good thing there is'nt
a real
'Robert E Lee natural bridge', or someone would have removed that log too. OK, my soapbox goes back under the porch.
have a good day all,
MDC

September 15, 2017 - Msg 108214: Good Friday afternoon all.
Just getting ready to head for home for a 3 day weekend. I am at use or lose so I am taking Monday off. Yippee!

I like the way you think GF. A sprinkler workshop. I wonder if I could make it happen? Ha, better not. We would just end up in some fancy French restaurant eating snails and brains cause neither one of wants to look ignorant. But you have a good time buddy, and tell them hey from Asa.

Possum, I'm sure a possum can be wet and groovy. If anyone can pull it off, you can. Thanks for the update on Boo.

MDC, Yea the world has just gone nuts, ain't it? I think it's gonna get worse. Like Barney told the Deputies, "It's gonna get tough, and then it's gonna get tougher. Just omit tough and replace with stupid.

Well we had a huge rain storm roll in this morning and it has dropped the temps a good 20 degree's here. They are calling for snow above 8,000 ft. tonight. Hard to believe we were in the 90's two days ago.

I hope Romenna is doing ok. She has been pretty quiet.

Well off to home I go.

Prayers for all.

Asa

September 15, 2017 - Msg 108215: Goober-Fife---have a good time at Mayberry Days.
Yes it will be nice to forget about the 'real world' for a few days in Mayberryland! :)
ASA--stupid is what stupid does! :(
Ya all have a good evening.

September 16, 2017 - Msg 108216: Good morning, porch. Haven't been intentionally quiet, just busy. Our ESL classes on Wednesday mornings at the church have started again - we follow the school calendar. That takes a little prep, and uses up a full morning. I still really do enjoy it though. The people are so sweet, and so intent on learning.

As for this "statue bashing" thing, I'm so ashamed of Dallas. Ashamed of the whole nation, actually. This whole business of erasing history is shameful, and very, very dangerous. It's done to try to placate and appease a generation of malcontents, and it won't work. Appeasement never does. The "offended" ones are never satisfied, they always want more. So what's next? We have a Leesburg in Virginia, Texas, Georgia and Florida, and a Lee's Summit in Missouri. Must we now rename those cities? Perhaps just a scramble to make up some other story for the cities' names, something that has nothing to do with Robert E. Lee. Maybe that would satisfy them, but I doubt it.

The sad thing is, that the war was ever fought in the first place, but the truth is, it was! You can't erase it by pulling down statues. I know, the malcontents see the statues as honoring Lee and the others, and that's true. They deserve honor, as valiant fighting men who were defending their homes, and their rights as sovereign states. Slavery was wrong, it was abominable and it should have ended. It would have ended anyway, because it WAS wrong, it violated our own constitution, and many of the slaveholders had already come to that conclusion. It was a dying issue. The real issue was the defense of states' rights, and we still have the same issue today. We still have Washington poking its nose into everything and overriding decisions made by state judicial systems. If that doesn't stop, we're going to have another "civil war" one of these days, and it will have nothing at all to do with slavery. Saddest of all, we still have a form of slavery today. We have a whole class of people who are enslaved by the government. Their basic needs are met by the government, and their "work" in return is to vote for their benefactors. Personal initiative and pride are out the window. Just vote right, and the national provision will continue to flow, paid for by those who choose to earn their own living, and pay tribute to Caesar rather than taking a handout from him. I'm 100% in favor of the government taking care of those who are too old, sick or disabled to work, and for providing temporary help to those who are actively seeking work. However, I resent my tax money going to support those who prefer to sit on their fannies and smoke pot, or who call themselves the "breadwinner" for their family because they just have another baby when they need a raise. I know I've told you about that young woman I met at work. That attitude is encouraged, and that annoys me beyond words. OK, enough of that.

David and Brittney and the boys will be here for dinner tonight. David's birthday is Monday, so I'll be making fried chicken, with noodles and milk gravy, and an angel food cake - his favorite. Eloise is out of town, but Jerry will join us. I'll fry a couple of pieces of round steak for him, as he doesn't eat chicken. David thinks no one fries chicken like I do. It's just plain old fried chicken with crust, but he thinks it's the best. I don't do it often, because it makes such a mess, but I'll do it for him.

Well, better get moving. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

September 16, 2017 - Msg 108217: RO--Thanks for checking in. I know you are busy today, but please try calling BOO when you can. Thanks,
MDC

September 17, 2017 - Msg 108218: Good morning, porch. It's a beautiful day here on my end of the porch, probably going to be a hot one, but that's what a/c is for. My heartfelt thanks to whoever invented it!

MDC, I just tried to call Boo, and got a recorded message that "due to network difficulties, the call can't be completed at this time." I guess Harvey blew down some cell towers or something. I'll email her and see if that gets through.

We had such a nice time last night. David and Brittney and the boys and Jerry came to dinner, and my chicken turned out great. The gravy was pretty darned good, too! The guys assembled my other chairside table, which I finally got to replace the one that arrived damaged, so "command central" is now complete - my recliner and both side tables. Looks very nice, and is veeerrry comfortable! Then David vacuumed the living room and the office, which I appreciated very much. I think I have the best family in the whole world.

Diesel was with them, of course, and honestly, if that dog gets any cuter I don't know what we're going to do with him. He is so much like our precious Bentley that it's spooky. He looks just like him, just a bit smaller. He is the sweetest, most loving dog, and so smart. Brittney is a dog whisperer, she can teach them anything, and Diesel now can: Speak (loud bark), Whisper (very soft woof), Sit, Lie down, Roll over, Shake, High Five, and the cutest of all, Paws Up! That's when you hold both hands up, palms outward, at about chest level, he stands on his back legs and reaches up to put both paws against your hands. If you hold your hands just a tiny bit above his reach, he will stand almost on tiptoe and stretch waaay up to meet your hands. It's hilarious! He's so smart. He's a medium sized dog, about 25 pounds but looks bigger because he's so fluffy. They all pick him up and carry him around, sometimes cradled like a baby, but mostly they carry him high, almost sitting on their shoulder, and he wraps his front paws around their neck and holds on! He's so playful with Toye Starr, and they roll and tumble like a pair of otters, but he's very gentle with her. You can see when he's pulling his punches. When she's had enough, she just makes a fake snap at him, he backs off, and they curl up together and rest for a while. So sweet!

Well, guess I'll get moving. I learned this morning that a dear friend's father passed last night. He was 98! I guess I'll go bake a cake or cook up "a mess a-somethin'" to take over there. She's going to have family coming in by the droves.

Have a peaceful and restful, blessed Sabbath, friends. --Romeena
