One of those weird weather days here. Many, many little teeny, tiny cloud bursts of mist, then hot sun, then clouds, then mist, etc.

MDC - I think three dogs is my limit. I dont even want to think about what Romeena said regarding the contestant's insides right now! Yeeeesh!

Maude - Sounds like a nice wingding. Good food!

Not too much happening here on my side of the porch. Pretty much same stuff. Hope all is having a good day and gettin' that firework smoke out of their lungs. LOL! Hey to Boo, Asa, G-F, Lucy, Sterling, PH, SPOT, TOM and everyone else protesting at Mr. Frisby's!

I hope everyone had a great July 4th. Mine was nice. Hot, but nice. Heck, It's July. It's supposed to be hot, right?

Back to work today after a much needed 5 days off. I'm not sure what is going on, maybe I just need to retire, but I am finding my work increasingly frustrating lately. I don't seem to have the tolerance I once did for stupidity. And there seems to be an overabundance of that anymore at work. When it gets really hot, I know folks get more testy, myself included, but dag blame it, I ain't making it hot. Don't take it out on me! Whaddya think GF. Have I come to the end of my reign? lol

MDC, I sure hope those PT treatments are helping you.

Romeena, glad your tests came back good and that you are feeling better. Good luck on the next 15 pounds. That weight sure comes easy. but never seems to leave easy.

Hey John Masters, you ready fo0r another season of football. Training camps open up this month I believe. I sure have lost a lot of interest in the game anymore. Wonder what causes that?

Well I best get rolling. Much to do.

Prayers for all.

July 06, 2017 - Msg 107809: Afternoon Porch Friends!

Stopping by for a quick spell in my rockin' chair. We've been out of town since the first but got back last night. I came to work and had lots of catch up to do and planning ahead. I'm going back out of town tomorrow. Lots of traveling but I don't mind so much. We stay at a Methodist campground (in the hotel section) when we go to St. Simon's Island and there was zero phone coverage or data unless we went further into the island and even then it was spotty. My parents, where we will be this weekend, have good wifi but I may be busy. I haven't seen my almost 98 year old grandmother since January and we are going to my dad's birthday dinner as well as my aunt and uncle (whom has Parkinson's really badly)'s 50th anniversary party. So, I'll stop by when I can.

G-F- So, what kinda doctor are you per se?

John- I hope your dad's feeling better.

Asa- What does your wife say about you retiring?

MDC- That theme song is almost as memorable as the Fishin' Hole! How did your appointment go?

Romeena- How did Toye Starr do about the fireworks? You may have said but I wasn't able to go back because of time.

Well, I need to skeedaddle. By the way, my stepdaughter moved home last night. Back to cooking and all for 4! Have a great weekend and I'll hop on when I can.

July 06, 2017 - Msg 107811: Gosh, I'd sure love to go to one of those Meet-Ups, but it's just not in the cards for me anymore. Too far, and can't afford it, and when I do travel, it needs to be to see my kids. I go on those group trips with my church, but all that requires is packing a suitcase and getting on a bus. We usually know several months in advance, and just drop off a payment now and then with the church office, and by trip time, it's paid. Oh well. As my grandmother used to say, "If wishes were horses, then a frog wouldn't have to hop." Or something like that.

Have fun, anyone who is going. --Romeena

July 07, 2017 - Msg 107813: I understand Romeena, I'll send you some pictures maybe a Live feed too...If I can pull it off.....G-F

July 07, 2017 - Msg 107814: Thanks, G-F, that would be lovely. I guess a picture would be the next best thing to being there.

I'm limping around today. Last night, I was walking through the kitchen, and got too close to my kitchen trash can, which has a lid, and a square foot pedal that raises that lid. I accidentally kicked the corner of that pedal with the side of my bare foot, and immediately it felt like a biiiiig bee sting! Within two minutes, I had a purple goose egg about two inches in diameter, and over half an inch high, and hard as a rock. It stung something fierce. Evidently I broke a vein or small artery in my foot, and it bled under the skin until the back pressure finally stopped it. I iced it, of course, and that helped a little, but this morning, it hasn't gone down, and the purple is spreading across the top of my foot. It doesn't hurt all that much now, but it stings, and I DO NOT want any pressure on it. That does hurt! This isn't one of those little thin-skin purple blotches, this is a deep-tissue hematoma, and it's going to be with me for a while. Clumsy old lady.

Now, for gripe #2. I have lost my driver's license. I had it yesterday while running errands, and now I don't have it. Believe me, I have exhausted every possibility I can think of, and no one has it - not the grocery store, the bank, the pharmacy, no one. I've searched my wallet, my purse, my pockets, and my car. I'm about to take the car over to my mechanic to let them search around and under the seats a little more thoroughly than I can. The dratted thing expires on the 25th, and you have to present the old one in order to renew. Rats!

Well, guess I'll go have a little lunch. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

ASA--if you can swing early retirement, go for it!!

July 07, 2017 - Msg 107817: Good evening, porch. Just got home from playing bunco - first Friday night of the month, you know. Good food, good friends, a friendly game, and now back home. Not a bad deal!

MDC, good news on both my whines. The lump on my foot is a little smaller, still very tender, but it will eventually go away. I think a doctor would try to avoid draining it, as any puncture site would be a potential invitation to infection, which as a diabetic, I definitely don't need. There are no broken bones, or walking would be very painful. It only hurts when something presses on it, like a shoe! Walking barefoot, I'm fine, and I have some old, comfy shoes if I need to go out.

And - drum roll, please - I got my driver's license back! Believe me, I had run down your check list already, and then some, to no avail. This morning, I was sitting here looking out my window, and just offered a quick little prayer, asking God to help me find the silly thing, because driving without a license in my possession is asking for trouble and a big fine, and not driving is not an option for me. Toye Starr can't drive, she's too short, so I have to do it. Well, just a few minutes after that little prayer, "something" told me to call Rick's Automotive, my trusted mechanic, and ask for help to search the car. Rick himself answered, said, "sure, bring it over and we've got some mirrors we can use to see into areas that you can't", so I went by there when I went to pick up Eloise for bunco. One of the young, agile mechanics put the car into a bay, and about five minutes later, he walked into the office and handed me my license. No charge. I gave him a big, big hug! It had slipped between the console and the front passenger seat, which is what I had suspected all along, but had been unable to find it. I had used a big Mag-lite flashlight, and bruised my hands poking them down into that tight space, but never found anything. The young man said he only found it when he wedged a mirror into the space and could see a corner of the license, where it had slipped between the seat base and something else. God knew where it was all the time, and since I wasn't figuring out that I needed help, He just gave me a nudge. So -- all is well at my house tonight! Blessings, friends! --Romeena

July 08, 2017 - Msg 107823: Good morning, porch. Beautiful day here. I'm especially enjoying one of my crape myrtles. Around the perimeter of my back yard, I have five of them. One is a large multi-trunk, about 25 feet tall. The others are all under 15 feet, and are various colors. None are blooming worth squat. In the middle of the yard, there are three more, all volunteers - I didn't plant them, but when they came up, I left them, as they are all in good locations and are healthy. Two of them aren't doing much, but one is just in full, beautiful, glorious bloom! It gets sun almost all day, while the others are shaded either in the morning or the afternoon, and therein lies the difference. If you want crape myrtles to bloom, they gotta have sun, and lots of it. I knew that, but when we planted, the trees weren't leafed out, and neither Joe nor I realized how shady the yard was. I've had to adapt and adjust the location of things several times. Oh well. I've got my beautiful lavender/pink baby, whom I have named Flora, and I can enjoy her beauty. Her presence is courtesy of God and a bird. Pretty thing.

MDC, that's a great suggestion, and I'm going to do that today. I have a couple of old, small hand towels that will be perfect for stuffing down in that space by the console in the car. This is not the first time I've lost things down in there, but I was always able to retrieve them myself. This time, the license managed to hide itself very well. I swear the thing must have tiny little legs and the ability to run.

Well, gotta hit the shower. I'm going to a surprise birthday party at the church this afternoon. A friend is turning 80, and her kids are having a party for her. She's such a sweet person, a very dear friend, and I'm glad her children are doing this for her. Like many of my friends, she's a widow, and her children and grandchildren are very good to her, as mine are. Blessings, every one of them! Have a great day, friends. --Romeena

There are at least eight grandchildren, and the sons chose to let the grandchildren speak of their love of their grandmother, whom they all call "Grandmom." Each grancchild - youngest about 14 - spoke for a couple of minutes, and spoke very eloquently. I couldn't help but remember Proverbs 31:28 - "Her children arise up and call her blessed." It was a joy to witness, and I'm so glad I went.

Now I'm home in my comfies, have checked out the fridge and found enough leftovers, so I don't even have to cook tonight. I'll just find some good TV (if such a thing exists these days) or go to Netflix or raid my DVDs. I'll find something.

I saw a pair of Carolina chickadees around my bird feeders yesterday. They are the cutest little things! I had identified them as black-capped chickadees, but after checking my bird guide, I think they're Carolinas. Their differences are slight. Both bird's range extends across most of Texas, so it could be either one, but judging by the subtle difference in belly color and the extent of their white collar, I think they're Carolinas. Pretty little things, perky and lively, and I just call them chickadees! I only needed the finer distinction so I could mark them on my life-list of birds.

Well, guess I'd better get busy. Dishwasher needs to be unloaded, and a little tidying up is needed around the house, and I have a doc appointment at 1 pm, so had better tend to business. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

July 12, 2017 - Msg 107846: Good morning, porch. It's absolutely beautiful here today. The sky is baby-blanket blue, busy little breeze, and every growing thing is green, green, green! That one volunteer crape myrtle I mentioned earlier is just really showing off. So pretty. Another of the volunteers is trying to catch up, but the other six of them are still just piddling along. My lawn needs mowing, but Eddie will be here tomorrow or Friday. The grass grows about 3 to 5 inches a week, depending on whether it's watered, or gets rain. With rain, it grows faster.

MDC, Huntsville is about a 700 mile drive for me, so it would really be a "fur piece" for you! It's about 1,200 driving miles from where you are to Dallas, so you'd have nearly a 2,000 mile trip. As for having one here in the Dallas area, I'd just love that! I'd be happy to be the local liaison for whoever decides to plan it.

Folks don't realize just how big Texas is. It's 635 driving miles from Dallas to El Paso, before you even get out of Texas! From the top of the panhandle, to Brownsville down in the southern tip of Texas, it's about 900 miles. We have blizzard-prone country in the panhandle, and semi-tropical valleys down south. Our USDA planting zones range from 6b to 9a. We have huge, sprawling cattle ranches, where the land is not measured in acres, but in sections. A section is a square mile. We have lots of farmland, huge citrus groves, vineyards, high prairies, miles and miles of seashore, mountains in the western part, pine forests in the east, the beautiful "hill country" with crystal-clear rivers, big bustling cities that offer it all - arts and culture - and tiny sleepy little towns like Mayberry. We have oil fields and industry, manufacturing, abundant natural resources, clean water, and five military bases in San Antonio alone. Texas is probably the only state that could secede from the union and remain self-sustaining. We also have people like me, Texas-born and raised, proud to be a Texan, and not a bit ashamed to brag about it! My Dale always told people he wasn't born in Texas, but he got here as fast as he could.

I've traveled within the U.S. enough, however, to know that every state has beauty and something that makes it unique. The deserts are gorgeous, with a beauty all their own. The eastern states are lush and green, with autumn leaf shows that will take your breath. The coastal western states have great weather, and great beauty. America! I love it!!!

Blessings, friends. --Romeena

July 13, 2017 - Msg 107850: HI Gang, I have been busy getting ready for my vacation/reunion. A company that makes a leg edema pump sleeve has really gone out of its way to get it to me by tomorrow! Very rare in today's world. It will take the place of my PT while I am in Santa Barbara.
I am bound and determined to make it there! :)
Pretty slow today on the porch. I hope and pray that all is OK.

Romeena, during one of our visits to Texas back when my sister lived in Grapevine, we rented two RVs and traveled from Dallas to San Antonio to Houston then back to Dallas. We considered visiting El Paso but when we measured the distance and realized how uninteresting getting there would be, we decided against it. The high point surprise of our trip was the small Polish named communities southeast of San Antonio (Kosciusko, Panna Maria, Czestohowa and Helena). It was surprising when we met some local cowboys who understood Polish.

MDC, good luck on your reunion trip.

July 13, 2017 - Msg 107852: Good evening, porch. MDC, I surely do hope you can get that on top of that edema issue, and soon. It has to be uncomfortable, inconvenient, and downright annoying. Prayers for you, friend.

Boo, I'm so sorry about your difficulties at work. I know you think of that job as a mission, and it is, and I think it's just terrible that money has to be an issue. Those kids, and you folks who are trying to help them, deserve much better than that.

Poor Horatio, you probably made a good call on not driving to El Paso. You're right, there's a whole lot of not much to see on that road, unless you're a fan of flat, treeless land. Now, if you veer south a bit, and don't just drive a beeline, you'd get into the Big Bend country, and that can be spectacular. It's almost due west of San Antonio, so your best bet would have been to head that way from good old San Antone. Mountains, canyons, the little town of Marfa, known for the legendary and mystical "Marfa lights" (Google it) and really, some very pretty scenery. The McDonald observatory is there, as is Ft. Davis, a surviving old military outpost. It's all located in the little dip-down on the Texas map, where the Rio Grande veers from its southward path, turns up and runs northeast for a bit, then turns back south again. Incidentally, (you probably know this) the river is called the Rio Bravo by those on the Mexican side of it, thus the John Wayne movie of that name. Interesting little factoid.

Well, I'm watching a good movie, just stopped to let the commercials get buried in a long pause, so I can buzz through them when I return. I like to build up about a half-hour pause, which will let me run through about five or six commercial breaks. Do you suppose the advertisers realize that people do that? Surely they do. I never watch commercials anymore. Oh well. Blessings, porch. --Romeena

July 14, 2017 - Msg 107854: Good morning, porch. I hope everyone's day is as beautiful as mine is shaping up to be. The weather is beautiful, Eddie was here yesterday so my yard is in good shape, critter traffic out back is high (always something to see) and well, it's just a good day!

You know, when I was wondering if advertisers realize that people are skipping commercials, it started me thinking. I'm sure they're very aware of it, and now I'm wondering just what they're going to do about it. Whatever remedy they come up with, I'm pretty sure we're not going to like it.

Well, guess I'll go raid the leftovers. I broiled some chicken legs with lemon pepper on them, and made a pan of chicken-flavor rice-a-roni on Wednesday night. Just as it was getting ready to eat, David and family showed up and wanted me to go to dinner with them. Not being one to turn down an opportunity like that, I just shut off all the heat and got dressed. David ate one of the drumsticks, and then we went to a favorite little semi-Italian diner and had a great meal. When we got home, the food had cooled enough to put away. I put the remaining four drumsticks in the skillet with the rice and stuck it all in the fridge. Last night, I had two drumsticks and some of the rice, will do the same for lunch today. Tonight will be a surprise. Maybe I'll order Chinese, or just have a PBJ.

Blessings, friends. --Romeena

July 15, 2017 - Msg 107860: Good morning, porch! Well, yesterday's beautiful morning was a lot different from today. The sky is completely overcast, and in places, it looks like a big bruise. We had some rain overnight, and likely will get more. The temp is 79°, but according to the weatherman, we'll hit the upper 90s this afternoon. The combination of rain and heat will bring the Texas Sage bushes into bloom in about three days. Amazing plant! It will bloom repeatedly during the warm months. Every time it rains, a few days later the sage bushes all over town just burst into spectacular bloom. The blooms last a week or so, then drop off, but the bush will bloom again with the next rain. I planted one years ago, but failed to note that it would be in the shade when a nearby tree leafed out. The poor little sage just passed quietly away. I'm thinking of getting another one, and this time it will go in a sunny location. The blooms don't emerge after a rain until the sun is high and hot again. Also, the one that didn't make it was getting too much water and was in an area that doesn't drain well enough. The new one will go in a raised bed, with some expanded shale worked into the soil so it drains quickly. Sage doesn't like wet feet!! Here's what it looks like: http://www.horticultureunlimited.com/plant-guide/thunder-cloud-sage/.

Well, guess I'll go find some lunch. Blessings, porch! --Romeena

July 17, 2017 - Msg 107864: Good morning porch. its a beautiful Monday morning on my side of the porch. kinda coolish this morning but supposed to get up in the 90's as the day moves forward

had a good week end mostly. stayed busy with house chores on Saturday. grilled up some supper Saturday night, fed Patrick and Daysie (Beth had to work) and then took a nice walk.

Our church celebrated 74 years as being a chartered church yesterday. Had a great service and the celebrated with a BBQ lunch afterwards. Our deacons started smoking the pork and beef brisked on Friday night into Saturday morning and then pulled the meat for our lunch yesterday afternoon. They provided slaw, beans, chips and tea or water along the the pork and brisket. It was might good food and great fellowship as well. guess they fed close to 350 folks at the church and then provided take out boxes for those who could not stay or to take to shut in or homebound folks.

G-F: I am looking forward to the meet up this week end. I am planning on driving over on Thursday afternoon so be sure and be there on Friday morning . did not want to be rushed or chance getting caught in traffic on Friday morning.
