October 04, 2016 - Msg 105852: Good morning, porch! TOM, that was a beautiful poem, and it expresses a truth that has been becoming more real to me as time goes by. The Bible expresses that concept very simply, in Psalm 46:10 - Be still, and know that I am God. What wonderful reassurance is in that poem, and in the scripture, if I just slow down a minute and hear it.

My "surprise lilies" are popping up everywhere! I just love those things. Under the name "lycoris", there are several varieties. Most of what I have is Lycoris Radiata, and they're neat! A tall, leafless stalk appears from bare ground in late summer, looks a lot like asparagus. In about three days, it will be two feet tall, and then an explosion of small red trumpet shaped flowers appears, making it look like some sort of firecracker. Some of those flowers will go to seed, and the seeds can be planted after they mature. I don't know how long it takes for the seed to develop into a bulb, but the bulbs are what one usually sees or buys when planting lycoris. The bulbs put out little bulblets too, which can be separated from the parent bulb and replanted, so the plant spreads in two ways, by seeding, and by multiplying bulbs. Very odd. The seeding explains why the "surprise" lilies will pop up where you didn't expect them. I have them all over my yard now. Most were planted, but some definitely were not, yet there they are. Lycoris is definitely a warm-zone plant, probably would never be successful above zone 5 or 6, but here in the Dallas area and any of the warmer states, they're a beautiful and fun addition to your garden. Very strange plant, odd growth habit. Just Google "surprise lilies" and you'll find a lot of pictures and information about them.

MDC, while I've never had a sazerac, I did try "escar-got". Once. I will never say I don't like something that I haven't at least tasted, but one taste of the snails was enough. Snails have nothing to fear from me, unless they get in my flowerbeds, then out comes the Sluggo and away they go. Yuck!

Well, guess I'd better get busy around here. The dishwasher is full of clean dishes, and dirty ones are beginning to accumulate. I'd better go empty the dishwasher, to remove the roadblock. I hate that job, but it beats washing them by hand. If anyone is in the market for a dishwasher, I will very highly recommend a Bosch. That thing will clean the crustiest, dirtiest dishes with no trouble at all. I don't scrape or prewash my dishes, just pass them under a stream of water over the disposer side of the sink. What doesn't wash off goes in the dishwasher with the dish it's stuck to. They come out sparkling, and the thing is so quiet you have to check the floor for the red sentinal light to know whether or not it's running. It definitely gets five stars from me!

Blessing, porch. --Romeena

October 06, 2016 - Msg 105859: Hey everyone- Wanted to check in and let you know that me & mine are as prepared as can be for Hurricane Matthew. It is predicted to bring heavy rains & gusty winds to our area,so I'm thinking it will be kind of like a tropical storm for us.

We made it through CAT 5 Hurricane Hugo back in '89,so we can get through this. Will check in when I can,but if I'm not posting it will be due to power outages.

Prayers for Florida and for all of us in Hurricane Matthew's path.

October 06, 2016 - Msg 105862: Good evening, porch. Thank you, Tom. So far, my son and DIL are okay, but they're bracing for a heavy hit. They're in Mt. Dora, which is about 30 miles north of Orlando, pretty much equal distance from both east and west coasts of the state. They likely won't get hit as hard as those nearer the coast, but it's still probably going to be an awful storm. I'm staying in touch with them, and praying for the safety of everyone in the path of that monster.

Well, better go put away the groceries. I made Donna's home health call (she's doing great, thank you!) and stopped for groceries while I was out. Now I don't have to leave home tomorrow. That will please La Starr. She just hates it when I leave the house, the spoiled little thing.

We should be in better shape in my area, although heavy rains and winds are in our forecast.

October 07, 2016 - Msg 105867: Wow. What a storm! I was just watching a newscast from Daytona, and you could see huge chunks of debris literally falling off the exterior of a hotel near where the newswoman was standing. It looked like balcony railings, and some big chunks of solid material, perhaps the floor of a balcony. The wind is just beating the building to pieces! Poor little Haiti is just almost washed away. This has been a really vicious storm. I talked with my son last night, and they were locked down and ready for it - as ready as you can be - but I haven't spoken to them this morning. He'll call me in a little while, I imagine. The news reports look like the Orlando area didn't get hit too hard, as the storm is just skirting the coast so far.

All of you along the coast, you're in my prayers. Spot, I know you paid your dues for many years, and I'm glad that now you're doing your fighting with a phone and a computer. You were one of the "angels in hard hats" for a long time, and we owe you a lot.

All that happened at his house was one section of the screen around his pool cage and lanai was ripped out. Not difficult or very expensive to fix. He said most of it has passed them by now, and is headed on up the east coast, will probably make landfall well north of central Florida, which is where he is. God is good. No need for the APB, MDC, I'm here. Thanks for inquiring though.

Well, one tree down and one to go. And it isn't going to cost me one red cent. That's the good news.
The bad news is we are going to lose not just the cracked branches from the tree, but the whole thing as well. The "tree guy" who works for the tribe came over on Thursday to examine the tree, and he recommended we get rid of the whole thing, as he could see it was having a lot of trouble with fungus growing inside the crack and on other branches, which he said was a bad sign and that the tree was on the way out.
Then while looking at that one, he noticed the tree next to it was dying from the top down, and he recommended taking that one out too, as he said the kind of tree it was has softer wood, and would fall apart, probably sooner than the other one with the crack.
So, they came on Monday and chopped the tree with the softer wood down first, and also chopped off the offending branches on the tree with the crack. Well, actually the power company chopped those branches off, since they had a nice bucket truck that could go in just about any direction or position, and they didn't even have to turn the power off to get the limbs by the power line that goes to the house, so that was a plus. They just snipped those two branches off, and then the tribal guys took over and trimmed it a little more and then chopped down the other one.

Since the tree with the crack(not anymore) had a lot of taller branches that extended around a lot of power lines, the guy said they would have to contract out for that one, which would take a couple months with paperwork and all.
He told me on Thursday that the tribe allocates a certain amount of money for things like this for tribal members, but that it tends to run out, so it is a good time to do it now. And while he said he would rather not have to cut the trees down, he could see that those two were in bad shape and would only cause problems in the future and could be dangerous to be under.

After the one tree was cut down, the family and I were going out to the car, and a squirrel that frequented that tree was up on our roof chattering angrily at us giving us the whatfor. I'm glad I don't understand squirrel talk or I might have had to wash his mouth out with soap.

Well, better get to bed. Have a nice night all.

Billy Ray the Postman

October 12, 2016 - Msg 105898: Good evening, porch. Billy Ray, it's good to see you on the porch. Don't be such a stranger!

I've been watching a bit of TV this evening, and have two questions. First is in the episode where Andy tricks the escaped convict into using his leaky fishing boat to try to escape. Barney has accidentally fired his pistol in the courthouse, and Andy empties the bullets out of it. Actually, I believe that's the first time where Barney's gun is emptied out. Then when Andy leaves Barney beside the little side road to watch for the convict, he tells him to fire three shots if he sees anything. Now how is he going to do that with an empty gun?

Then in all the "Golden Girls" eps, the intro includes a clip that shows Dorothy pushing Rose into a closet and locking her in, to keep her from interfering with Blanche's hasty wedding. My question is - why would anyone have a slide-bolt lock on the outside of a closet door? I can see a key lock, to try to protect something valuable in the closet, but a slide-bolt? I don't understand that!

Asa, you mentioned cole slaw. I like slaw, and I like Thai food, and the Thais make a cole slaw that's delicious. It's different, but very good. There's no cabbage in it! I had identified the shredded carrots, but couldn't figure out what the other major ingredient was, I just knew it wasn't cabbage. Finally, I asked one of the owners (he attends our ESL classes} and he told me. It's shredded green papaya! It can't be ripe! It's not green-green, it has lost most of the green color and is a creamy white color, but has no hint of pink or gold. It's a bit tart and tangy, and they include some peanuts and some mandarin orange segments in it, and some sort of tangy dressing - not sure what it is. Anyway, it's very good. Ha! Green papaya! Who knew?

Well, I'm off to dreamland. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

October 13, 2016 - Msg 105899: RO--maybe it's tarragon or dill in there. :) (Also, a small sienfeld joke in there)
Regarding the bloopers...I guess Andy could have given
the bullets back to Barney at a time that we don't see.
As for the bolt lock, one could say it was there so that small kids (of a previous tennant) wouldn't get into the stuff in the closet. See, I 'splained 'em both! haha
ASA, glad you got the conduit up. Do you wear any kind of a back belt whilst you are doing that work? As for the feet, how about some Dr. Scholl's gel inserts? :)
GF--The Cubbies beat the Gigantes!! wow!
SPOT--all the best to you guys... be careful too!

October 13, 2016 - Msg 105901: Good afternoon, porch. Papa bear, it's good to hear from you, and I'm so glad you weren't seriously injured. Cracked ribs are quite serious enough, and very painful. There's really not much to do for them, except to rest and wait for them to heal.

MDC, I guess I can accept that Andy gave Barney his bullets back at some point, but that does require a lot of "if-in" on my part. Regarding the bolt lock on a closet door, anyone who would do that didn't have kids like mine. They'd have stood on each other's shoulders if necessary, and had that bolt undone in a heartbeat! They all climbed like goats, and had the nimble fingers of little monkeys. Nothing was safe from them. The thing that worked best was their daddy's voice saying, "You probably don't want to be doing that." Worked almost every time.

I have a question. If I refer to "a flat of petunias", do you know what I mean? Suppose I say "a tray of petunias." Does that help? Which expression is most familiar to you, if either one is? I really need to know.

Blessings, porch! --Romeena

October 13, 2016 - Msg 105903: Afternoon all.
Romeena, we call them a flat around here also. Not sure why.

Good to see you Papa Bear. Make sure you make yourself cough. I broke some ribs years ago playing ball, and after a week in pain I went back to see my Doctor on a follow up. He took x-rays and found out I had developed pneumonia. He said it was because I was repressing any coughing due to pain, and coughing is how you clean your lungs out. He put me on a strong anti biotic and told me once an hour, hug a pillow and force yourself to cough for a bit. Just a thought buddy.

Crazy day today. I had hoped to get all my wire pulled, but kept getting called off for other things. Frustrating! Maybe tomorrow. I did get one section pulled though. The section I figured would be the worst. And it pulled as slick as can be.

Well time to get my paper work done and call it a day.

Prayers for all.

Oh,BTW Ro, that cole slaw you described sounds good.

Asa

October 13, 2016 - Msg 105904: Thanks, Asa and G-F. That's what they're called in Texas too, but I have run into a few "transplants" who look at me funny when I say it. Turns out they call it a "tray." I'm planning to use it as the title of my little book, which will be going to the publisher in the next few days. The working title has been "A Flat of Petunias" and I wanted to make sure it wouldn't confuse people.

Yes, the Thai salad is good, and I found a bunch of recipes online. I need to check with my friend at the restaurant though- the recipes call for fish sauce and freeze-dried shrimp, and I don't remember that being in the salad he serves. What I like about it so much is the crunch! The green papaya is quite firm and crunchy, and then there's that tangy flavor - just really good. They also make a soup that's surprisingly good. It doesn't look like much, just a fairly watery broth, with a small amount of chicken bits and veggie pieces in it. I always try as much as I can in an ethnic restaurant though, so I tried the soup, even though it looked pretty blah. It was so good! The flavor that came through to me, very surprisingly, was citrus! Yep, it has lemon juice in the broth. So, a few days later I had heated a can of Progresso's traditional Italian Wedding Soup, and while it was good, it seemed to lack a spark. I had half a lemon that I had cut the day before, so I squeezed it into the soup and stirred it in, and it was wonderful! Just brightened that somewhat bland soup right up, and that has become a go-to soup for me now, on nights when I don't want to cook. By the way, I've always been a Campbell's soup person, and still like them, but am finding more and more that I like in the Progresso section. Change can be good, I guess.

Well, for tonight, I cooked a pork roast in the slow cooker all afternoon, pulled it into shreds about an hour ago, and it's simmering in the BBQ sauce and drippings right now. A big old Vidalia onion in it didn't hurt it any, either. Some 90-second rice, and I've got a meal. Yum! Blessings, friends - come on by if you're hungry! There's plenty. --Romeena

October 13, 2016 - Msg 105906: Thanks for the link for the pictures, G-F. It looks like a good time was had by all.
One thing I can't figure out though, was that a Michael Jackson impersonator on the "Mayberry Idle" page?
I suppose..., what is that they call it, six degrees of separation?
You see, Michael Jackson sang a song about a rat, and that rat's name was Ben. TAGS had a character named Ben Weaver, who WAS a rat, in another way. Or is that stretching things a bit?

Nice seeing Ronnie Schell as well. I know he also didn't have anything to do with TAGS, but since he was on the spinoff with Gomer, that one is a little more understandable.

Romeena, about the lock on the closet door on Golden Girls, is it possible that one(or all) of the girls was superstitious or just incredibly scared of the boogieman coming out of the closet(no, not that kind), and so they kept it locked at night to keep something inside?
How's that for an explanation?

Well, we go to Noah's school tomorrow for parent/teacher conferences. He only has a half day of school today and tomorrow, and they have the conferences in the afternoon.

Well, have a good night all!

October 13, 2016 - Msg 105908: Boy RO, I think I'll drive the 24 hrs straight to get some
of that BBQ pulled pork! That's my soft spot, it sure sounds good!
As to the latch, I can just picture your kiddos doing something like that! My mom had installed some of those "lift and move" style latches about 4" down from the top of the doors.
PAPPA Bear--my goodness, you take it easy bro!
I bet that smarts. You are in my prayers.
Speaking of prayers, I saw a pic in the paper today of a town still under water in NC. Lord
be with them!
GF and ASA- I saw the two eps on Me-TV tonite, first one was of the mayor up a tree, and there were some Barneyisms...Let's see--maybe I'll refer to you two as
Frick and Frack, Birt and Squirt, or the
Kats and Jammer kids! haha
The second ep was my FAV of all time with Miss Peggy's
pure gala dinner and the Down in the Valley song.
That's such a great episode!
GF--Thanks for the pix.
Lord Jesus be with us,

October 13, 2016 - Msg 105909: Hey Sterling, you sneaked in there before me.
HA, I like you 'splain' of the MJ impersonator!

October 14, 2016 - Msg 105911: Sterling to answer your question about " Mayberry Idel" Yes that was suppose to be a MJ take off, they really don't filter what acts go on stage, most of them ARE appropriate for the event. So I suppose they just want some variety is what I'm thinking...🙄...To Each his Own as they say...
As for Ronnie Schell he was in two TAGS episodes, he played Bernie the furrier, and Jim Martin on the "Foster Lady" episode where Aunt Bee did a commercial about Foster's furniture polish..(color episode) BTW I made a clapboard like they had in the show and Ronnie signed it for me, it hangs in my Mayberry room. I met Ronnie several times over the years, he is a Really nice guy....

G-F... Or Frack the Squirt...lol
( Maybe Asa -Bert Frick- and I could go on the road and do a HVAC act?)...lol

October 14, 2016 - Msg 105912: Good morning, porch! Up to your usual hijinks, I see. Thanks for the link - that song by Andy and Miss Peggy is a really high favorite for me.

Sterling, I guess you could be right about the girls being scared of a boogie-man in the closet, but it was Blanche's room, and I don't think she was scared of very much, especially if its name ended in "man." I've thought of another explanation, and it just might be right. I think they just put that lock on that door to make the scene play right, with Dorothy locking Rose in the closet to keep her from interfering with Blanche's wedding. They weren't thinking about some nosy old biddy like me analyzing the thing to death!

Well, gotta run. I've got a bunch of Gerbera daisies ordered from my neighbor's garden center, and they've arrived. I need to go pick them up, as Joe will be here around noon to do another little job and I might just get him to plant those daisies for me. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

October 14, 2016 - Msg 105913: Me again. This has nothing to do with TAGS, but I think it's so beautiful, I want everyone to hear it. Check out this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaCwBxfOGDw.

I'm encouraging our music minister to get the music for this and let a family of women in our church perform it at Christmas. The mom and three grown daughters all have beautiful voices, they harmonize incredibly well, and this song is perfect for them. I don't know whether he's going to do it or not (he doesn't respond to suggestion very well, more of an "I'm in charge" type person) but we'll see. So far, I'm just encouraging him. I may have to switch to nagging. --Romeena

October 14, 2016 - Msg 105914: Nice song, Romeena. Never heard it before.

I think ultimately you are right about the lock. And point taken about Blanche. Haha!

G-F, I remembered Ronnie Schell in that Foster's episode the second you said it. How could I have forgotten that?! I don't remember the furrier episode though.

Well, in a couple hours we go to Noah's school to talk with her teacher. Pray that my wife doesn't find too much fault with her or the school. She already dislikes the teacher, because she is young and pretty.

October 14, 2016 - Msg 105915: Good afternoon, porch. I've had a busy day. Joe arrived before noon, and was here until 4 pm, planting flowers and weeding out the bed he planted them in. We put in 48 Gerbera daisy plants and 36 snapdragons, all mixed colors. Sure does look pretty! Pulled about a zillion of those nasty seedy weeds that appear overnight, and at least a hundred tiny elm trees, about four inches tall. I wish the things I want would just appear, and grow like the unwanted stuff does. Sure would be cheaper. However, if my plan works, what we planted today should last for several years. I've been planting Gerbera daisies for about six years now, just a few every year, and most of the original plants are still there, just blooming away. They look a little ragged in the coldest part of the winter, but in the spring they come roaring back. A few of the snapdragons will reseed, and a very few will winter over, but I'll probably have to replant at least half of them. However, if all those Gerberas make it, it will cut my expense considerably. And --- the Gerberas bloom straight through, from very early spring to late fall. Lots of bang for the buck there.

Sterling, the furrier episode involved Emmett, from the fix-it shop. His wife wanted a fur coat, and he wanted to get her one, but they were so expensive. Ronnie Schell was the salesman, who honestly tried to get him a good deal.

Some older woman should advise your wife that most jealousy is rooted in insecurity, and if that's the case, the best way to deal with a young, pretty teacher or anyone else, is to make a friend of her. If she does turn out to be predatory (unlikely) she will probably seek other prey, not the husband of a friend, especially if that friend is the mother of one of her students! My David's wife has had to deal with that the past few years, with the boys in baseball. Some of the other mothers really seemed to dislike and resent her. She's beautiful, has had three children and looks like she never even heard of being pregnant, is very talented and creative, and is kind and sweet to everyone. There were three mothers, though, who would start rumors about her, make snide remarks where she could hear, and just generally made big donkeys of themselves, thinking they were hurting her! They did, of course. It hurt her feelings very much, but it didn't turn anyone else against her, it backfired on them. People started to avoid them, probably fearing that they'd be next! So sad.

Gosh, my flowerbed looks so much better! I don't want to leave my window, but I must. I have things to do! Blessings, friends. --Romeena

October 14, 2016 - Msg 105916: Some older woman would have to tell her that, Romeena, because I sure am not going to say it. ;-)

The PT conference went well. The teacher showed us Noah's progression with regard to writing, and other examples of other things like his problem solving skills, which were coming along nicely.
She also eased my wife's concerns by touching on something that my wife had threatened(to me) that she was going to "have some words" about with the teacher.
All in all, it was a pretty good meeting.

I am going to have to look at that "furrier" episode again, because I still can't remember Ronnie in it. Probably because it is one of the color episodes, and I haven't watched those as many times as I have seen the B&W ones.

Forgot to say before, that it is very nice to see you again, Pappa Bear! Glad you were able to walk away from that wreck, and I hope you are mending well. Get some rest and get better!
