Well gang, I said I was not going to give audience to the book "Andy & Don" but I did rent it from the library. I can see why the Mayberry community is giving it the "Big Freeze" ...
It is written by Don Knotts's 3rd wife's sisters husband, (I guess that makes him a expert?) He only met Don a couple of times, and never spoke to Andy. I'm thinking he got most of his information from those tabloid papers at the check-outs.
I'm sure both men were complex and had their issues and big egos much like everyone else in "Hollyweird" does, but the fact IS they were both talented men who were best friends to the end!.... As for me, I hope Andy's wife Cindi will give the Ok to the autobiography our own "Head Goober" Jim Clark did with Andy while he was still alive. Jim said to me, it is in the can waiting for her to give the ok to publish it.
I can maybe see now why she didn't go through with it at this point in time knowing this other book was coming out.

Good Friday morning all.
Yep GF, I am sorry I spent good money on the book. Although it had some good reading in it, it does have that sleazy "tabloid" feel to it also. I do like how it shows just how good a friends Andy and Don were. I think that genuine friendship showed in TAGS and is perhaps what has made it so special over the more than half century it's been around. At least that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
That's a long shift Spot. Thanks for the vittles buddy.
Sorry you had to sweep with cracked hands Sterling. But you did a nice job. I have taken to wearing those light weight rubber gloves (surgical gloves) at work most of the time. It keeps me from having to wash my hands so often, which in return seems to keep my hands from getting so dried out. You ain't got a hand washing compelshin do ya? lol
Welcome to Ritchie Ferarra. Why don't you pick you a TAGS name and pull up a rocker and sit a spell.

Wow, thanks, PH! I bookmarked that "Mentioned Characters" site. Very useful! I declare, your education was worth every penny.
Ritchie, it appears you have decided to stick around. We're happy to have you. We've had a little decline in population the past few years, and it's nice when someone new moves to town. Kinda livens the place up a bit.
Sterling, bless your heart. You do have a difficult situation there. Do you have any idea why your wife is so deadset against Christian schools? My youngest grandson attends one in Fredericksburg, and his parents are doing whatever it takes to keep him there. He's in third grade, and has gone there since kindergarten. Last year, he went to public school for about a month, hated it, and moved back to Ambleside. It's expensive, but his dad is a golf pro, so he teaches golf to the older kids two days a week. It counts toward their PE requirement, and in return, my grandson's tuition is covered. The school is wonderful. Here's an example.
My grandson is a little wild man, very energetic, enthusiastic, bursting with ideas and questions, and he finds it hard to sit still. So, last year in second grade, his teacher fixed it. He's very bright, straight A's, finishes his work and gets bored quickly. So, he had been out of his chair, talking to his neighbors and generally being a nuisance. At recess time, his teacher asked him to come to her desk as the other children left the room. She didn't scold or threaten. Here's what she said, as reported to his mom: "Trip, I noticed this morning that you're having trouble sitting still and being quiet. So, let's take this recess time as an opportunity for you to practice those skills. You're so good at everything else, but we need to brush up on your "sitting quietly" skills. I'll stay in here with you, you can sit quietly at your desk and read one of your books, and I'll get some work done. If you can make it through recess time without popping out of your chair or talking, I'll get you another story book to add to your collection, and you can read it when you have extra time during class."
Instead of coming home drooping because he had been punished, he came home very excited, telling his mom how his teacher helped him practice being still, and how he earned a new book, and how "the practice really helped, because I stayed in my desk the rest of the day!" How brilliant was that? And all delivered with a hug. Now, that could happen in a public school, I'm sure, but it's not likely. The mindset is different. They have kids from druggie homes, kids who have had zero discipline in their lives, kids with parents who offer little to no help. About all the teachers can do is try to teach to the test, and keep the kids from killing each other.
I was a "reading buddy" for a while in a second-grade class. My job was to read a story to part of the class while the teacher worked with the other half. Why? Because half the class spoke no English. The teacher was bilingual, and taught in Spanish part of the day, and in English the other part. I was the baby-sitter for the other half, at least part of the time. The rest of the time, that half was on their own. They had the attention of the teacher only half of their day. That may not be a problem in your part of the country, but it definitely is here in Texas.
Well, this grows too long. Sterling, you have my prayers. --Romeena

Thank you, Ritchie Ferarra! Yep, O'Keefe's Working Hands is what I have been using this past winter(which apparently isn't over here yet). It works really well. One of the only things that really helped my cracked skin. Then when the warmer weather came for a spell, I cut down on my usage because I didn't need it, and then the cold came back and so did my cracked skin.
I don't know if I told you all that I noticed something about O'Keefe's in that the texture was similar to Noxzema. And since O'Keefe's is pretty expensive, I decided to try using Noxzema on my hands. Well, I never found out if it would have worked, because as some of you may know, Noxzema has a rather strong scent, and unless you wash it off right away like you are supposed to, that strong scent lingers and isn't very pleasant after a time.
I found that out on Christmas Eve. at the church, when some kids sitting in back of me started saying to their parents that "Something stinks."
Well, I knew what that something was, because I could smell it too. While the parents were trying to hush up their kids, I slipped out and washed my hands. Unless I can find an unscented Noxzema, I very likely won't be attempting that little experiment again. Then I coughed up the 8 dollars and bought myself another disk of O'Keefe's, which has no scent.
Come to think of it, Asa, I do wash my hands a lot. But I also do a lot of cooking and cleaning too, so I have to.
G-F, I have a book like that called "Inside Mayberry" that I found at Goodwill a long time ago. It was after reading long discussions in the book supposedly coming from the actors, along with "facts" on all the major players and all this other "inside information", that I started to suspect that the authors were mainly pulling this information out of their... nether regions. I don't think I will be wasting any more money on those type of hearsay books.
Romeena, I don't know for sure why my wife has this animosity toward the school. When we first started sending Kai there, she seemed pretty well agreeable to it, except maybe for some of the rules she didn't like, but she went along with them. Then this Hello Kitty junk happened, where the new principal started enforcing the "no characters" on school clothes or supplies, and someone said something about Kai's Hello Kitty lunchbox, and my wife got all bent out of shape about that, and after that incident, she just started hating everything about the school in general. Though sometimes I suspect she was just looking for a reason.
I also think some of it could be coming from her mother, who was against sending Kai there almost from the start. But who also should just keep her meddling to herself.
Yet another reason is I think my wife buys into the whole spiel of "non-judgment" and "diversity" (with their own definitions and reasons for those) that the public schools and the world push all the time, and thinks that the Christian school is too rigid because they have a dress code and, gasp... teach modesty and traditional morals.
I am so jealous when I hear of parents who both WANT to send their children to Christian school, like your grandson's parents. It would be nice if my wife could see the benefits of a Christian education for our children and desire that for them. I honestly can't understand why she doesn't.
MDC, I never thought of that, and I'll have to try it. Can't hurt, can it? I have prayed silently before in the house in that way, and I know that even demons tremble before the name of Jesus. So we really don't have anything to fear in this world, do we?!

Sterling, I'm really treading on unexplored ground here, because I've never had to face a problem like this. My husband was a committed Christian, and we were in agreement on such questions, but I do have some of my own random thoughts. (Surprise!)
Is it possible that there's a component of one-upmanship involved here? I mean, could your wife care more about getting her own way, than she really cares about the school question? If so, maybe you can defuse the whole thing by just handing it over to her. Something like, "I know you have Noah's best interests at heart, just as much as I do. You're his mother, after all. So I'm going to leave the whole question in your hands. You love him, you'll do what's the very best for him. Just as I do, you want him to have a high quality education, personal attention, intelligent and compassionate guidance, protection from modern and questionable social engineering, and limited exposure to people with poor moral character. I know, that last requires a certain amount of "judgment", but so does not petting a grizzly bear. You're a smart woman, you recognize when some behavior or train of thought is not a good influence for your child. So think it through, compare apples to apples, and make your decision. Whatever you truly believe is best for Noah, I'll go along with you."
Put the responsibility for the decision squarely on her, which of course, also means the responsibility for the outcome is hers. She just may not want that. Personally, thinking back over previous confrontations like this, I believe she derives a certain satisfaction out of the fight itself. So, don't fight. Repeat after me: "Yes, dear!" And smile. Smile like you know a secret. It will drive her absolutely nuts!
That last little trick is one Dale used to pull on me, and trust me, it worked. When he started agreeing, and smiling that smarmy smile, I knew I was headed down the wrong path, and he knew it, and was just letting me hang myself, the weasel. It saved me from making many a mistake, believe me. So, it's worth a try!
Blessings. --Romeena

I wish everyone could see what I'm looking at right now. It's one of those evenings when the air is golden, and everything with any hint of color in it is popping, in bold relief, everywhere! The sky is a pastel swirl of blue, ivory, yellow and gray. Far to the west there's a hint of rose, and the blue that's overhead is faint. Gold is the overwhelming color, and it's coloring the very air. With the rain, and the feeding that I've done in the flowerbeds, the flowers are absolutely rioting out there and the colors are so vivid it's just almost too much. There are roses, geraniums, sweet alyssum, pansies, petunias, verbena, clematis, amaryllis, shasta daisies, gerbera daisies, hydrangeas, guara, impatiens, sundrops, a few late iris, and here and there some dusty miller provides a background. Even the Louisiana iris in the pond has put on a show. Oh, and there are two water lilies blooming in the pond as well. There are about 40 or 50 small red sandstone boulders strategically placed, and they are so beautiful. The smallest is probably about the size of a half-bushel basket, and the largest weighs 1100 lbs, with the majority somewhere in the mid range, about the size of a washtub. What I can't get over is how vivid and clear it all is. It looks like double 3-D, if there was such a thing. I'd take a picture, but I've tried before when it was like this, and that eerie light just doesn't photograph well. It's pretty, but nothing like the real thing. So beautiful.
The light is fading now, and my LEDs are coming on all over the yard. They're on different photosensors, so they don't all turn on at the same time, but the last set just lit up. It's pretty at night too. Around the perimeter, flood lights face the fence, highlighting the fence-hugging eleagnus, and washing any bare fence wood with light. There are little Tiffany-style lamps and some little ball lights in the flowerbeds, colored spots aimed at pretty boulders and some of the trees, an uplight in the tallest group of crape myrtle, and two big glass (2 and 3 ft) fixtures with turret-style caps, that are filled with twinkle lights. Unique, and quite pretty. They're held up by wrought iron stands, each one in a flowerbed. The inside of the top of the arbor is lit up with rope light, so anyone sitting out in the swing has soft light. All this light has two purposes - beauty, and security. With all the lights being low-voltage (about 20%) and the rest LED, it costs me less than 30 cents a night to have all of it, including the soffit-mounted floods that surround the entire house. You gotta love LED!
Well, guess I'll go watch a little more TV, and then maybe turn in early tonight. Got two home health calls to make tomorrow. One is a very complicated and difficult dressing change, the other will be a snap, probably take five minutes. It all works out.

Sorry for the cruel weather report, Sterling. You can be cruel to me this summer when it is 100 humid degrees here. Last night it was 80 and extremely humid at 10:30pm. Not fun. Sounds like Ro has some good advice there. I know it is hard to just let go and hand control over when it comes to your children and your convictions, but keep praying. The Lord will take care of Noah. I know in the past, I have sometimes driven myself crazy worrying about how things will turn out..did I make exactly the right decision, etc.. I can see where God came through despite some of my decisions. You are trying and you love the kids and you ARE giving them a Christian education by living it out in front of them. What they see in you will do more to influence them than anything they will see/hear in any school. As my pastor often says, "Some things are better caught than taught".
Well, I got out of bed this morning wondering what truck ran over me in the night. I got up at 5:30am yesterday, did my work out on the elliptical, worked all day, came home and changed and took the kids to a Newsboys concert, where I climbed 1 million steps to the nosebleed section (more than once). I proceeded to put in my earplugs and still get my head blasted off by the volume and pounding bass. The things you do for your kids.
Today, laundry and cleaning, but a nap in there somewhere.

April 30, 2016 - Msg 104509:
Good grief, Boo, do you have a death wish? A "workout on the elliptical" would have been enough for me. Working a shift would have done it. A Newsboys (or anybody else's) concert would have been out of the question. I do not do stairs, not even once, and definitely not more than once. Two leaky valves in my heart make that out of bounds for me. I function fine at a normal pace, and can even step it up a bit, like working in the yard, but stairs - no. The leaky valves, as you know, reduce the O2 concentration in my blood, so even if my heart rate increases with the exertion, there's just not enough O2 available. Add to that, I take a medication that regulates my heart rate and limits the amount it can increase, so I can hit about 116, and that's it. The elliptical and I would not get along well. I know, I sound decrepit, but actually, I function just fine. I just don't climb stairs, walk up steep hills, walk long distances (like over a hundred yards) or (hahaha) try to run. Notice I said "try." An example - yesterday, Eloise and I went to Landry's high school baseball game, as he was playing. I have a handicap placard, so was able to park up close, but the field was about two hundred yards away, and up a shallow incline. I knew I could walk it, but would have to go slowly, and stop about halfway and catch my breath. However, there was a young man sitting there in a little golf cart thingy, so I just walked over and asked him if he'd haul an old lady to the baseball field. He said "Sure I will!" and I climbed in and away we went. Getting back to the car was easy - it was downhill, so not a problem. Even a very shallow hill is hard for me, going up, but coming down is fine. There's almost always an elevator where there are stairs, or a golf cart guy at an outdoor venue. If not, I still go. It just takes me a while. I can climb stairs, but just a few at a time, stop and breathe, then climb a few more. Down is easy. The sad truth is, if I'd lose about thirty pounds, it would probably solve the problem. I'm working on that, have lost five. It's a start, but it's hard. Insulin causes weight gain, and that has to be fought by eating less and exercising more. The exercise part is hard for me, and I have a good appetite! A bad combination when you need to lose weight. Oh well. I'm just fat, dumb and happy, I guess.

Hmmm, I don't know, Romeena. I don't know that I'd want to risk the outcome, after the damage is already done. But I do see what you and Boo are saying. I just feel strongly about having him go there at least(there I go with the "at leasts" again) for Kindergarten. If she can't give me that, then I will know that this goes deeper than the school. Not sure if it is "one-upmanship" either, Ro. I have given her the reasons on the "pro" side. Sometimes she can be compromising. I only hope her silence on the subject after our last talk means that she is mulling it over.
I have to tell you about a cute thing that Noah did today. We were over at my parent's house, and grandma was getting some ice cream for Noah and for herself. Noah loves Rocky Road ice cream and when he found out she had some there was no denying him.
Anyway, while he was eating the ice cream, he saw grandma eating her ice cream and he asked,"Are you eating Crossy Road ice cream too?"
Now, if you don't know, Crossy Road is a video game that Noah likes to play on my wife's tablet. It is kind of like Frogger, if you remember that game. In this one your character has to, well, cross a busy road without getting smushed in traffic.
I was talking to my mom when he asked that, so it took me a couple seconds to register what he said. I thought it was funny, and so did he, after I reminded him of the real name of that particular kind of ice cream. My mom did too, after I explained what "Crossy Road" was.
Hope you all have a Blessed Sunday!

I hope your Sabbath is a grand one.
Well we are in the middle of a "canyon wind event" here. That happens when there is a low pressure in the Southern part of the State, and a High pressure in Wyoming. The pressures try to equalize and the result is massive winds coming down through the canyons in the mountains east of us. And boy do they get strong. Upwards of 80 m.p.h. near the canyon mouths. It has been howling all night, and although it has calmed some, it is still blowing pretty good now. Glad it's not to cold. We get these events it seems 3 to 4 times a year. And when it happens in the winter, mercy sakes the wind chill is horrible. These should calm down as the day progresses.
I am teaching our Mens Group today at Church, and I will be speaking a bit on keeping the Sabbath day holy. We sure seem to have strayed from that practice.
Good to see you Possum. I think your cute when you go Glenn Fording all over town.

Sterling, I understand your concern, but I have to ask a question. If you fight her, how likely are you to win? How stressful will the fight be, and what is its effect on the kids? It can't be good for them, either of them, to see you two butting heads all the time. The kids are going to see you two fighting. They will then either see their mother win and their father lose, or they will see a very bitter fight with you winning, but her making you pay for it for months. Am I right?
Romans 12:18 says "If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men." (Yes, I'm sure that includes wives.) If you're certain you can win, and that will be the end of it, then go for it. If not, if she has a history of wearing you down, or making everyone miserable if she doesn't get her way, then why not just turn it over to her at the very first, and let the consequences be on her? The message to the kids will be that peace is a desirable thing. The truth is, Noah is not going to be ruined by a year in public school. It's not ideal, not what you want for him I know, but millions of kids go to public school, and they survive. Most of my grandchildren have gone to public school, and they're all keepers. What they see and learn at home is far more important than what the school does. Just keep the good stuff coming at home! If this is an opportunity to smooth the waters with her, and perhaps let her learn a lesson at the same time, well - at least think about it. I promise you, it will surprise her for sure, and may just chalk up a few points on your side as well. It may just frustrate her a bit too. She's spoiling for a fight, and you just puncture the whole balloon when you turn it over to her.
I think I'm going to cook up a pot of steel-cut oats! Don't know why that sounds so good this morning, but it does. It's usually a wintertime go-to for me, but it sounds good this morning. I'll put some chopped pecans and some dried cranberries in it, along with brown sugar and butter, and it will be goo-ood! Blessings, porch. --Romeena

Folks, I just have to say that I am so happy to be back on the Porch like I used to be. I didn't realize how much I missed it and all of you. You really make my laugh better. :)
Ro, your post about your health was a classic...made me laugh out loud. Its good you know your limits. My heart can take a beating, but I found out that my knees can't. Surprisingly, that is where I had the most trouble. On losing weight. I lost 30 lbs last year and gained every one of them back. The doc I see for my liver said not to lose and gain so I am now in a quandary. Do I even try? I read some stats that said a person is more likely to survive metastatic lung cancer than to retain a significant weight loss (unless they have gastric bypass). Humbug. :( I am just going to try to exercise and eat healthier. Maybe I'll lose a few pounds in the process. My knees are an issue.
We had business luncheon after church today and I made a big macaroni and cheese casserole. Man-0-man, was it ever good. I used my sis in law's recipe. It was a big hit. If any of you wants the recipe I will try to post it later. It is not healthy, or easy to make, but it is positively decadent.
This morning I was a little late getting to church because some of the cheese sauce spilled out in the seat of my car. Yuck. I got some paper towels and cleaned it up then tried to sneak into church unnoticed. I felt some grab the back of my shirt. It was one of the nursery workers asking me if I knew the mom of one of the little ones in the nursery and could I find her because the child was having a seizure. The child has a history of seizures and mom knows just what to do, so I scanned the crowd and found her, notified her and then someone else grabbed my shirt from behind and told me that one of the girls that comes to church from the rehab facility was having a "spell" in the hallway outside the sanctuary, so out I went. It was one of the girls from Shoreline that I know well and she has these fainting spells now and then, mostly to get attention. After I assessed her, I had to wait for someone to pick her up and take her back to the facility to lie down. She was fine but needed to get out of there. By the time I got back into church, it was over. Oh well. I had a nice lunch anyway and the mac and cheese was a big hit.
I came home and took a little nap; not a long one so I can get to sleep tonight. I have to work in the morning. I don't know if I told you all but the work on day shift is much less demanding for me, so it will work out for the best, I just have to get used to going to bed early.
Hey Possum...I just gave you an A for breathing.

Well had dinner at Stacey's house, played with the Grand kids. Now I am off to watch a couple of All Creatures before sack time. I'm off tomorrow. Not sure what I'll be doing. Maybe spent some time in the yard. There is always stuff in the yard to do. 10-4 GF?

Boo, I'm very, very glad to have you back on the porch regular-like! We've missed you. And I, for one, would love that mac and cheese recipe. One of my favorite "comfort foods" - mac and cheese. Good stuff!
As for weight loss, I know that being "lean" is supposed to be best for us, and I'm sure it is, but then why is it so hard to maintain? Over the years, having started out at 108 lbs on my wedding day, I have gradually added weight now and then until 108 is a distant memory, and I would probably look like a refugee if I lost back to that weight now. It would look unnatural, and everyone would be asking me if I was sick. My weigh gain has come in little plateaus. I'd rock along at a steady weight for a few years, eating anything I wanted, and then suddenly, put on five or ten pounds, in just a few months. Then I'd level off, and stay at the same weight for several more years, then do it again. My eating patterns wouldn't change. I've been at my present weight for about eight years now. I can diet off five or ten pounds without much trouble, but it comes right back. Yet, I hit that certain point, and don't gain above it, even though I'm still eating like I did when I put the five or ten back on. It's like there's a set-point, and it advances every few years. Weird.
Yep - I do have some weird, and probably comical, health issues, but being a home health nurse is good for me. If I ever start to feel down about my little challenges, all I have to do is remember some of my patients. Case in point - a little woman I saw yesterday, who is a year younger than I am. She's bedfast, in her daughter's care, diabetic, on dialysis, in liver failure, can't get her blood pressure above 80/40, and likely won't live beyond next week. She's stuporous, refuses to eat, and is quite obviously trying to die. Her daughter has her POA, and the decisions are up to her. The woman has never signed a living will, but has voiced her wishes to her daughter - she does not want resuscitation. So now the daughter has to make the call when the time comes. The most important thing I did yesterday, in my opinion, was to support and confirm her daughter's responsibility to her mother, to honor her mother's wishes and deny her own. Fortunately, they are a Christian family, and the patient has stated many times that she is not afraid to die. That's making it a lot easier for the daughter, and I'll admit, for me, as I try to support her.
Well, I'm off to scare up some supper. I've got a big old potato, some cheese and sour cream, and an onion I can chop, and I may just have a good old baked potato. Sounds good to me! Wish I had some of that mac and cheese, that would be even better.
Blessings, everyone. Sleep well tonight. --Romeena

May 01, 2016 - Msg 104531:
Thanks To and Asa!
To, I know exactly what you mean about the weight set point. It has been the same way with me.
Here's that recipe:
1 lb of rigatoni pasta
1 cup whole milk
2 cans of evaporated milk
1 cup of butter
1/2 cup sour cream
3 eggs
1/2 lb sharp cheddar
1/2 lb Monterey jack
1/2 lb Colby
1/2 lb Velveeta,
cubed
Salt to taste
1-2 tablespoons of sugar
2 cups shredded cheddar to sprinkle on top.
Cook and drain the pasta and put it in large baking pan (this recipe makes a lot). Grate all cheese. In large bowl, whisk three eggs, add milks, sour cream, cheeses, salt, sugar and mix together. Pour over noodles in pan and stir. Sprinkle with the 2 cups of cheddar and bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 45 minutes.
Ps- I'm watching a Glenn ford movie right now. :)

Well, you are partially right, Romeena. She may make me pay for months, but as for the bitter fight, it would only be as bitter as I let it become. I will just have to see.
You said, "let the consequences be on her". Don't you know anything about married men? They are ALWAYS to blame. ;-) Well, maybe not in your marriage. You were lucky. Or rather, Dale was.
I know Noah wouldn't be ruined by a year in public school. Problem is, once we start down this road, it is very unlikely that that road would ever change. My wife doesn't keep her eye on what happens at the public school like she does in the Christian school.
As it is now it is just a waiting game again, and we'll see. I laid out some good reasons why Noah should go to Kindergarten at the Christian school, or rather, counters to the reasons why he shouldn't.
Will those arguments win? Maybe, maybe not. But just like the year before this one with Kai before she went to public school, my wife would probably not be so inclined to cause a ruckus if she knew it would only be one year. It is during that year, that I can consistently pray that God would change her heart toward a Christian education there. He did that for quite a few years when Kai was going there when I never thought that she would be going the next year. God made it happen though.
Asa, good on you for teaching on keeping the Sabbath day holy. I would be too chicken to teach a class, I think.
Can you believe I have never seen a Glenn Ford movie? I should probably check one out sometime. I will by chance watch an old movie with one of the greats, and usually find it very entertaining. I remember watching Cary Grant in a movie where he was a reporter, and he and this lady reporter really had some great back and forth dialogue. Can't think of the title though, but I really loved it.
Then I came upon a movie with Jack Benny, whom I didn't even know made movies because I just remember seeing clips from his television show. The movie was about he and his wife moving to a farm in the country and having to deal with many issues that come up. I found he was a pretty good actor with that one, and it was a pretty good movie as well.
I wish I could remember the names of those movies, but I figure if I want to watch them again I can look them up then. There are others that I also can't remember the names of, but those two were the ones that pop into my head.
Have a nice night, everyone.
