February 18, 2016 - Msg 103910: Hey Romeena, Of all the gout flares I have had, none have ever been in my toes. Always the top of my foot, ankle, or knee. But the way you described the pain sure sounds like it. Have you ever had your uric acid levels checked? I'm glad you are feeling better already. It's amazing how when something we think bad happens, in the end good things seem to come out of it.

Glad Noah got through it ok Sterling. Maybe he is just being a good Maberryrite. Remember how Andy told Opie that if there was a tooth Doctor in town, folks had a responsibility to get bad teeth every now and again.

Well our storm blew through here just like they said it would. Rained a bit, snowed hard for an hour, and then poof, it was gone. Any snow that stuck is quickly melting off now. I love these spring storms. They come fast and furious, but leave just as quick around here this time of year. You can be in a total white out blizzard one minute, and a half hour later have blue skies, sunshine and halfway warm temps. It's fun to drive up the mountain a bit, and watch these roll in off the lake. Awesome!

February 19, 2016 - Msg 103914: Good evening, porch. It's late, and I'm headed for bed, but wanted to tell you about something I witnessed this evening. My beat-up knee is much improved, and the antibiotic has kicked in, so my breathing is a lot better. Therefore, Eloise picked me up and we went to the monthly dinner at the church. Dinner was catered by Babe's, a local fried chicken restaurant chain that has no equal, and the entertainment was an Elvis Presley tribute artist. His name is David Allen, and he's really good at being Elvis, but that wasn't the best part.

First of all, at intervals throughout dinner, we would hear loud vocal outbursts from another table, and after a while, we figured out that the noises were excited exclamations from a young woman, obviously both physically and mentally challenged. She wasn't meaning to be disruptive, she was just easily excited.

Well, when "Elvis" entered, she was ecstatic. Her family calmed her, and she remained pretty quiet. However, "Elvis" noticed her, and during the usual walking-and-singing tour of the audience, he moved toward her. She very shakily stood up from her wheelchair, to meet him. He stopped beside her, and she flung her arms around his chest (she's small) and hung on like a koala bear! He graciously remained in her grip, and continued to sing, finally finishing his song. Her family pried her off of him. His assistant had brought him one of the scarves that Elvis tribute artists always use, and he kissed the scarf, dabbed a little perspiration from his face, and looped the scarf around her neck. She nearly fainted.

He went on finish his show, and as he was leaving the room, he passed through the crowd, and stopped by her chair. Her family had fastened her seatbelt, so she couldn't stand again, but she held up both arms toward him. He bent down and hugged her, and kissed her on the forehead. As he moved away, he took her hand, bowed low over it, kissed her hand, and said "I will never forget you."

Later, I happened to meet him when he returned to the room for something. I shook his hand, which he turned into a hug, and I told him how much I admired and appreciated his grace and kindness in the way he responded to the girl. He looked me in the eyes, and said, "I learned a long time ago that there are angels everywhere. We just don't always know who they are."

He's right, and though I didn't say it to him, I think I met one tonight, too. --Romeena
February 19, 2016 - Msg 103915: Oh, Asa, I meant to tell you - I don't believe it was gout in my toe. Had to be just arthritis. I took one (1) Advil tablet and it went away. Gout would not have gone away, not that fast. It sure did hurt, though. I know, everyone is probably thinking if I could fix it with one Advil it couldn't have been much of a pain, but thank God, that's the way it works for me. I cannot, repeat can not, take ANY narcotic or opioid medication, anything that even looks like one. No codeine, morphine, demerol, dilaudid, percocet, vicodin, ultram, nothing. If I do, instead of one problem (pain) I'll have two problems (pain and vomiting.) Usually the remains of the pill comes up too. It doesn't even stay down long enough to fully dissolve and start working. The bigger guns, like demerol and morphine, also produce hallucinations and very bizarre behaviors. In other words, I get nutty. I can take ibuprofen and acetaminophen, however, but only very, very sparingly because they make my kidneys mad. One or two a day, of one or the other, is my limit. The upside is, one is usually all it takes, as in the case of the mystery toe pain. I recovered from that 4 1/2 hr back surgery, by taking one Advil every morning. I'm not kidding, it works. I think I mentioned the one time I was prescribed Cipro. Oh my,it made me feel like a rusty tin man! Even my hair hurt! Also just as a suggestion to all of us...carry in your wallet a list of all the Rx that you take, (and ones that cause allergic reactions)and one of your spouse's also. Very handy in case of emergency.
BTW, I guess I am "officially" a senior... a courtesy clerk at the grocery store asked me if i needed "help out" with my groceries! :(

February 20, 2016 - Msg 103917: Good morning, porch! MDC, I know what you mean about the clerks at the store. I got a laugh out of one of the guys at Wal-Mart one day, and from the people nearby as well. He had to have been at least 85, and asked me if I needed help with my cart. I said with a big smile, "No, thank you, sonny! I think I can just about manage it!" And don't worry, MDC, you'll get used to the question. It has begun. Just be glad you're not a woman, and being addressed as "Miss Firstname." I really don't mind that, though. Shoot, even my Sparkletts water delivery guy calls me "Miss Lanni." It's a Texas thing, a Southern thing, and is really a term of respect, never any disrespect intended. My Michigan in-laws would be indignant, but then they don't teach their children to say "Ma'am" and "Sir", either. Never did understand that one. My brother-in-law said it made the children sound like servants. I responded that in Texas, we thought it made them sound respectful to their elders. He didn't like that, but then, no surprise there.

Sorry I got all detailed with the medication woes back up there - too much information. I just really don't tolerate much of any kind of medication well, and it gets annoying. This antibiotic is hitting the pneumonia, and I feel better, but it's throwing my blood sugars all over the place. Last night, I went from around 100, to 277 in about an hour, after eating a little bowl of canned vegetable soup, and then, after just a few units of insulin, it bottomed out to less than 60 and I had to practically crawl to the kitchen for some juice. It's weird! It's not like I don't know how to figure the insulin. I've been taking it for many years, and taught diabetic classes at work. I'm not clueless. I've got a call in for the doc now, to see if I can switch to another antibiotic. The pneumonia is improving and I do feel better, but this roller coaster ride with my blood sugars is a bit scary. BTW, good suggestion to us all, to carry a list.

One of my best friends lost her mother this week, and I feel terrible because I haven't been able to do anything. I couldn't have attended that dinner at the church without Eloise - she drove, and let me out right at the door. I hate being dependent, but it is what it is. This too shall pass.

Well, guess I'll go feed my little roomie. She hates it when I stop off at the computer in the mornings. Right now I'm enjoying watching a little squirrel. He's discovered the pile of sunflower seeds I put out yesterday, and he's just chowing down on them! Cute little thing. Blessings, porch! --Romeena

Romeena, maybe that is also a Baptist thing as well as a Texas thing. In our Baptist church, everyone is always calling people "Miss so and so." Well, at least they are calling the women that.
It took me some time to get used to that as well. Just like I am still not comfortable calling the Pastors by their first names, "Pastor Don" and such. I still use their last names after the "Pastor.".
I guess it is a carryover from my Catholic days, because the priests were always "Father Dowling" or whatnot.
Glad your pneumonia is on the way out.

I have something to ask our resident handymen. Are new furnaces so-called "smart" furnaces or something? I ask because sometimes I notice the furnace blowing cooler air out of the vents. It was doing that last night and I thought that maybe the thing was broken already. But then I checked the thermostat and sure enough, it read higher than what I set the temperature to. So, is it blowing cooler air to get the room back to the set temperature? My old furnace never did that.
I held my hand up to the vent today and it was blowing out warm air again, so I don't know what to make of it. Do I need to call "the man"?

Sterling Holobyte, this is in response to your question about "sometimes I notice the furnace blowing cooler air out of the vents". Probably the most common cause is the thermostat. For normal operation, it should be set to AUTO and not to ON. If it is set to ON, the blower will run all the time, even when the furnace burners are turned off. With your room temperature reading higher than what your thermostat is set for, that is the reason why your burners are turned off, resulting in the blowing of colder air from the vents.
To confirm your furnace is working properly, try setting your thermostat to a higher temperature than the room temperature, wait a few minutes, then check the air blowing from your vents and it should be warm.
If you still have problems, post your results here.

February 20, 2016 - Msg 103921: Sterling, to add to what PH said, the new furnaces are designed to extract all the heat from the heat exchanger. Even tho it may "feel" cool, there is still some heat left in there.
I had a hard time explaining that to Mrs. G-F, she said it was blowing cold air towards the end of the cycle. "She had to be shown" as Barney says...lol even at the end of the cycle it was still blowing 70 degree heat. I have my fan/limit control set as low as it goes so I get ALL the heat I can out of it!. $$$$

In your case that is built into the design, you probably already noticed it runs more cycles but they are shorter in duration.

Asa, in his situation the heat anticipator is probably already programmed in the thermostat right?....G-F

You have been given good advice from PH and GF Sterling. Think of it this way, and you may already know this, so forgive me if I am telling you something you already know. The main fan motor in your furnace lags behind whatever the main burner does, usually by about 30 seconds or so. That means when your house stat calls for heat, your main burner will come on, but the fan motor will not turn on until the temperature in the heat exchanger comes up to a set point. This is done primarily to heat that air and not bring a blast of colder air into the conditioned area. Then after the house stat is satisfied, the main burner will shut down, but the main fan will continue to blow, trying to get the still warm air into the conditioned space. So as GF said, near the end of the fan cycle, it may seem a bit cooler than it did when the burner is on. All of this lag behind time is controlled by the stat in the heat exchanger. It could be that they may need to adjust it slightly if it is uncomfortable to you. Or, as GF mentioned, the anticipator in your house stat may need some adjusting. Did they install a new stat in your house with the new furnace? Some of these new digital stats are a real pain to program. My guess is the dynamics of control on the new furnace are slightly different than what the old unit did, and will just take some time to get used to.

Well Romeena, you best get that medicine changed if it is affecting your blood sugar like that. And yes, make sure you are wearing your life alert thingy. Get better soon.

Made a pot of chili today. Not bad if I do say. No prize winner, but heck, it works for me.

MDC, yes, I've had two pneumonia shots this year. First, the old original, and then just about two months ago, I had that new one, the Prevnar or what its name is. I have mixed feelings about all these vaccines, but really, I think they're a good idea. I do get them, so I guess I've made up my mind.

Asa, I called the doc today. My doc wasn't on call, but I know the one who called back, and trust him. He listened to my sorry little story, considered the options, and then said he felt the best thing to do was finish the course of this antibiotic - I've got three more doses to take. We just discussed a plan for modifying my insulin a bit until it's finished. I think he's right. I think I can handle it until Tuesday, and I'll see my own doc again then. I drank a small glass of juice a few minutes ago, and now I'm headed for bed. That juice should keep me from bottoming out again tonight. And yes, I have my bracelet on.

February 21, 2016 - Msg 103929: Good morning, porch! Getting better and better! Walking without the walker, very little pain. Knee is much better. Breathing a lot easier too, I think the pneumonia is on the run. O2 sat this morning is 93%, and that's not bad at all. For a lot of people it would be good, actually. However, I usually register better than that, at least 95% and mostly around 97%, so I'm looking for more improvement. It's coming.

Actually, I had considered driving myself to church this morning. The church runs a little "people mover" bus and those who wish to use it can park out beside the bus barn, ride the bus to the front door of the church, and then board it again after services to get back to the car. It's a great thing, and I use it. However, my phone rang about 8:15, just as I was deciding whether to go or not, and it was the driver's wife. They know the regulars, so she was calling us all to let us know that Joe is down with a bug, and wouldn't be driving this morning. That made the decision for me. I knew I could use the handicap parking near the front door, but after Sunday School, I'd be on the far side of the building with a good 200 yards to walk to get back to my car. (We have worship first, then Bible study.) So, I just went back to sleep! Sure do miss going to church, though.

We're in the 70s today, cloudy and looks cold out there, but it's not. Critters are out in droves, have wiped out the feed I put out a day or two ago. One little squirrel keeps hopping up onto the ledge outside my window and peering in at me. If I move too quickly, he runs away, but as long as I move slowly and not toward him, he stays, with his little nose against the glass, just peeking in. I think I'll make some popcorn later, and put some of it on that ledge. Or not. I'd have to squeeze between bushes and climb over a boulder to do that, and that would probably be pretty stupid right now. I'll have to put that on the back burner for a couple of days.

I think I will go up to Braum's, though. I'm out of decent food around here, and the little market that our Braum's maintains will have fruit, bagged salad, a small selection of meats, and that wonderful nut/grain bread they sell. I can get the stuff for a couple of good meals, and park right in front of the door. Very convenient, and just about a mile up the highway. Drop by and I'll make you a sandwich! We are not anywhere near 70 here, but near 50. That is wonderful for us. Going into the last week of February, the days are getting longer, the temps are getting higher, boy howdy, I like it pretty fine.

MDC, You asked me a few posts back about our lesson last week on adversity, and I forgot to respond. Sorry. Much talk about how adversity being an opportunity to grow and become strong in things, especially if we will maintain our faith during the process. Plenty of examples of that throughout the scriptures for sure. What a terrible thing to go through a trial and learn nothing from it. At least that's how it seems to me. I try to take the approach of what does the Lord want me to learn from this when facing trials, and I always get an answer, on His time schedule, not mine. That time schedule thing is always hard though, aint it? Reminds me of the classic prayer, Lord, please bless me with patience and do it right now! I have to believe God must chuckle at us at times.

Well I see a bowl of chili in my near future. I've got the beans to swing it.

It probably is at the end of the heating cycle that it does this. I guess I just never noticed it with my old furnace, but I am sure it did that too.
To answer your question, Asa, no, they did not install a new thermostat. All they did was make sure the furnace went off and on when I changed the temp on the old one. But I wouldn't have wanted one of those digital ones anyway. I had to use one of those at a former house we lived in, and it was a pain.

February 22, 2016 - Msg 103934: Good morning, porch! How can I feel as rough as I do right now, and still truthfully say I'm a lot better than I was? This pneumonia thing had been creeping up on me for quite a while, evidently, and I didn't realize it. I just knew I had zero energy, was short of breath and felt awful. If it had been a sudden onset, I'd have been making tracks to the doctor, but with it being gradual, I just thought it was my age and mileage, and my heart valves finally giving out completely. I'm not great, but I'm a far sight better than I was a week ago, and I'm grateful.

MDC, I know what you mean. And it's not just with us - you never know when there are "TAGS ears" nearby. I think I've told this story before, but I'll tell it again. Years ago, I had stopped by the post office, and had Sugarplum in the car. I parked where I could see the car, and the weather was cool, so I locked her in and left her long enough to run in and buy stamps. When I came back out, of course she was in my seat, bouncing at the window to greet me. When I opened the door, without thinking I just said, "Move over, I'm driving!" There was a man getting in his car on the other side, and he heard me, looked across my car, gave me a thumbs-up and a big laugh. I know he recognized it. The line isn't funny enough to bring that response by itself.

You should see my knee! The bruising is finally making its way to the surface, and the colors are spectacular! In fact, I'd like to have a blouse the color of one of the spots. It's a beautiful plum color! I expected it to be bruised by the next day, but the doc told me the bruising was too deep in the knee and would take at least a week to surface. He was right! I'm walking on it though, so I can't complain. It could have been so much worse. Bruises heal on their own. Breaks and chips need surgery!

Well, guess I'll go feed my baby. She thinks she has to eat the minute her little bitty feet hit the floor in the morning. Her little feet make me smile. They're smaller than my thumb! How can any creature be that little and still be fully functional? Blessings, all! --Romeena
February 22, 2016 - Msg 103935: Sterling, since you stated your thermostat was not replaced, it sounds like the heat anticipator may be suspect. You may want to check your manual or call the manufacturer to what it should be set at. I looked, there are several tutorials on line to show you how to do it with out a meter, but you need to know what the amp draw for your unit is. The older units are usually around .2 amp the new ones are more like .4>
They are really easy to set once you know what kind of thermostat you have. The tutorial shows several brands..
Without being to technical there are "tweets" to getting the best heat flow in your home, remember the blower has to blow air to the farthest extremity and adjust the vents/dampers closer to the furnace.... As Mr. Miyagi tried to tell the Karate Kid... You have to have balance!....G-F

February 24, 2016 - Msg 103948: Good evening, porch. Possum, good to see you! Thanks for the good wishes. I'm much better, saw the doc for follow-up today, and even taught my ESL class this morning. Doc says my lungs sound much clearer, and wants me to get another chest xray in about a month. The knee is spectacular colors, and still very sore, but I can walk on it, no longer need the walker at all. Now I'm feeling some bursitis in my shoulders, I think from leaning on that walker, and mostly from using my arms to push myself up out of a chair. I just don't seem to have much lift in my knees. I'm prone to bursitis, especially in my left shoulder, and that's where it's the worst right now. If it doesn't improve, I'll go get a steroid injection in it, and it will knock it right out, but it may resolve on its own.

It was cold here today - 42° when I left for ESL class. Windy, too! I left a little early and was able to snag a choice parking space, within about ten feet of the door to the building. Otherwise, the parking lot is about 40 yards away, with a walk down a windswept alleyway to get to the door. I was glad I didn't have to make that stroll with this banged-up knee.

I can't believe ol' Barn has been gone ten years! Boy, time sure does fly. He was a talent, a really unique talent. He had a sense of what was funny, and a comic timing that was sheer genius.

Gosh, It's hard to believe it's been 10 years since Don passed away. I like your idea of a Barney quoteathon MDC.

Well off to the big city for a staff meeting today. An hour drive down, a two hour meeting, lunch afterward, a few parts places I need to go to, and then an hour drive back. Yessir, that should just about do the day for me. And 50 degree weather to boot.

How did your Mulligan stew turn out GF? Mulligans are not in season this time of year buddy. Be careful. :)

Of course, I was up to the bathroom about three times, but I go right back to sleep, so I got a good rest last night. OK, so then why is my shoulder hurting so much? Guess I'd better schedule that steroid injection before it freezes up completely. I've been down this road before, and there's nothing at the end of it but heartaches! Just heartaches! A quick injection, though, and it's fixed. God is good.

Asa, thank you, but I sure have been doing a lot of moanin' and groanin' lately. I apologize, but hey, I'm old. I'm supposed to be gripey.

Amazing how they can do that without it being painful. Now I'll have to micro-manage my blood sugars for a couple of days. All that steroid will send the sugar sky high, but that's what insulin is for.

February 26, 2016 - Msg 103971: MESSAGE: Good very late evening or very early morning. Possum, I can already abduct my left arm without my shoulder feeling like it's breaking. I hate the pain that comes with bursitis. It's the kind of pain that only comes in flashes when you move the joint the wrong way, only lasts a few seconds, but manages to make you feel nauseous in that short time, and I won't put up with it.

You know, between the deduction from my SS check to cover my Medicare premium, and the premium for my supplemental-to-Medicare insur@nce, I pay nearly $500 a month for medical insur@nce. (Cheap compared to what most middle-class people are paying for Obamacare, but still a lot to me.) With that in mind, and considering my age and the statistically short time I have left on this planet, I have no intention of spending that time in pain. When something hurts, I present myself to the doctor and say, "Here I am. Fix it!" And they do. Now, that may not always work, but so far, it has.

So, that shot? It's working. The shoulder is better, and even my other little aches and pains, even my knee, feel better. Not all of that shoulder shot stays in the shoulder. Some of it goes systemic, and works a little magic here and there. So I should have a pretty good couple of days. Just got to watch the blood sugar. It already went to 265, and I had eaten almost nothing. That's the big negative side effect of steroid injections for inflammatory processes, but thank the Lord, it's manageable. Insulin to the rescue!

Well, I'm getting nudges and little sighs from Toye Starr. She wants to go to bed. I'm not sure why. She's curled in a little cuddle bed next to my feet, under the desk, and should be pretty comfortable, but she's a creature of habit. Funny little thing. When she's off the bed to go to her potty box, she will return to a certain spot next to the foot of the bed, to wait for me to pick her up. No matter where I might be standing, she goes to that spot and I have to go there to pick her up and put her back on the bed. It doesn't occur to her that I could perform that little function from anywhere around the perimeter. It has to be that particular spot, and it does no good to call her. She will stand there, rooted to the spot, until I come to her. Do you think she might be a little bit spoiled? Naahhh! Surely not! --Romeena
