Where have I been today? Well, to be quite honest, I was having my picture taken for our church directory, and being a bit snarky about it. This was an update session, as the original directory was made about two years ago. I would have had mine done then, but hit a snag, and my stubbornness took over.

I've been in many church directories over the years, but never alone. All by myself. The pictures have always been family pictures, with me, Dale and the kids, starting when there was only one child, and on through all four children, then gradually back down to just Dale and me. After he passed, I haven't had the desire to appear in the directory all alone.

So, two years ago, I hit on the idea of taking Toye Starr with me. All fluffed and buffed, and she's a born model, loves to pose, very cooperative. Of course, I called to check first, and was told it was not allowed. Since the brochure provided by the photographer indicated otherwise, I questioned it, and was referred to the church's executive pastor. Not the one who preaches, but the one who manages the church's business affairs. He said "we" have decided not to permit pets for several reasons. Some participants might be allergic, or afraid of dogs, and if my tiny dog was allowed, how could he prevent someone else bringing a large, unruly dog, etc. I suggested a designated time slot, for all those bringing pets to come on that particular afternoon, for example. No, that wouldn't do, the decision had been made. So, even though I served a hitch or two as a greeter-signer-inner person during the photographic sessions, I never had my own done.

Last Christmas, Brittney and David gave me a beautiful, life-size picture of Toye Starr. It's one Brittney took in my back yard, and she transferred it to a canvas wrap. It's beautiful. It's the picture I use as my Facebook icon. I was looking at it last week, when they announced the update photo sessions for the directory, and an evil little imp whispered an idea in my ear. So, I made an appointment, and this afternoon I had my picture made, holding that picture of Toye Starr in my lap! It's hilarious, and I'm trying very hard not to look triumphant. I may not actually have my dog in the picture with me, but I've got the next best thing, and I'm not "alone" in the shot. Like I said, a bit snarky, but who cares? --Romeena

I would have responded earlier, but I didn't have electricity for Tuesday and some of Wednesday. The reason for that has been making my blood boil(I guess I'd better eat some more bananas and lower my blood pressure).
The reason I didn't have electricity is because, simply enough, I was negligent in paying the electric bill. Fair enough, and I take full responsibility for that. Sometimes bills get all mixed up and so do I and I forget what bills I have paid and haven't. I usually juggle the bills around the major ones like mortgage and car payment.
What I cannot stand about our electric utility company - and I will broadcast their name because I hate them that much, Alliant Energy - is this asinine policy they have where even if you pay your bill IN FULL after you are disconnected, they still will not turn your power back on until the next day. And I paid mine not five minutes after the guy disconnected us.
I happened to be home when he came, and I asked and pleaded with him, just give me five minutes to hop on the computer to pay it(how I usually pay it). I joked with him to drive around the block and I will have it paid when he gets back. He was, to put it nicely, a real jerk, and he says "Go ahead and pay it."
But then he just continues doing what he was doing....! I say, " I'm not going to be able to pay it on the computer if you disconnect me."
He just grins a "I don't care" grin, saying that "They'll be on my @** if I don't do this." Then told me that if I pay it, he'll be "back around."
I didn't really hold out much confidence of that happening. This happened once before, so I know from experience that they never turn it on until they make you suffer for a day and night, I think to "teach you a lesson."
Anyway, so first I drive down to the Alliant Energy building to talk with someone about paying it. I had forgotten until I saw the sign on the locked door that they don't do bill paying or arranging, or anything there. After dealing with this company, I think I know why they keep the door locked. So I pay it over the phone, and ask if there is any way to get it turned back on sooner, and all the lady says is that all they can guarantee is that it will be turned back on by 5 pm, the next day, but that "if someone happens to be out they may do it the same day."
Once again, I didn't have much confidence in that. I see those Alliant trucks all over the place, but never do they stop in to reconnect you until the next day.
I hate being right.

As I've said, I will take responsibility for getting behind on the forever-rising electric charges(no pun intended). But when you pay the darn thing minutes after you are disconnected, there should be some way to get reconnected in a more timely manner.
I mean, it takes less than 5 minutes to turn the power on(same as turning it off). This time it took even less to reconnect it, about 2 minutes. I can't believe that one of those Alliant people driving all over town can't spare two minutes from disconnecting people to turn the power back on for people who pay it.

So anyway, all day Tuesday and until about 9 am on Wednesday, we didn't have any power and had to go to a hotel. I wanted to stay put, and even bought some more lanterns and flashlights and batteries, but it was kinda muggy and Kai did need wifi for her homework(they actually get their own Chromebook laptop computers at that school, but that's another subject), so we forked over $80 for a room. I also had been doing some laundry when disconnected, so I spent the night at the laundromat, where they seem to have this thing about not using air conditioning.
I didn't get much sleep last night and I had to be up early today, but I was consumed with hatching evil plans on how to take down Alliant Energy. I would have twirled my long, pencil mustache if I had one, cackling maniacally. But all I came up with was a possible social media onslaught(of one) and buying a generator.
Ok, so my impulsive ambition to be a super-villian may have to wait, but that doesn't stop me from hating Alliant Energy's guts. And the thinner people who work there, too.

I have a better, cheerier story from the rest of my day today, but it is late and I will post that later.

That would be my number one suggestion. "Buying a generator" is like putting a filter on a cigarette to prevent health problems. The situation is still there. Now, regarding the snarky guy; hey, to him it's probably "just a job", someone's gotta do it" type of person. He probably cuts power all day long and has probably heard every excuse in the book. I'm not sure what else to say, but it sounds to me like what I mentioned above. I pray you get thru this, but motel bills and probably spoiled food doesnt help the situation. Just my thoughts.
Maybe there is a "Yogism" in there somewhere.
May he rest in peace at 90 years young. One of his best was "Don't miss your friends' funerals if you want them to come to yours." :)
I will pray that rain avoids Mayberry Days, and that POSSUM gets better. And, yes, we have had some awesome sunsets lately!

The others can't do that. So pay them first, and deny them the satisfaction of another scene like you just came through.

Many years ago, Dale and I were at my cousin's house one evening, playing "Hearts" and talking, when the phone rang. My cousin's wife, Peggy, answered it and it was immediately obvious it was a creditor calling. Peggy talked with him a minute, and apparently he got hostile, because she suddenly said, dead serious, "Look, don't get snotty with me or I'll just take your bill out of the hat!" And she hung up. I nearly choked on my Pepsi! As you implied, G-F, you don't want to annoy us Texas girls.

Yesterday, when I got home from ESL class, with three Taco Bell tacos in a little sack, I drove into the driveway, and pushed the button to raise the door. It went up two inches and dropped back down. Tried again, same thing. Drat. Tacos getting cold, and things to do in the house, but can't get in. Two weeks ago, I had decided I needed to start carrying a housekey just in case something like that happened, and I had four copies made of both the front and back door locks. Where were they? Not in my purse. Oh no. They were lying right where I left them, on the counter in the kitchen!

So, I called Ted, he was in the area, and appeared in a few minutes. He couldn't get the garage door open, either. There was no way to trip that little latch thing at the top, because he couldn't reach the cord that you pull to do that. So, he finally managed to get in a window. That won't be possible again, because I've replaced the dowel rod that was missing in the track where the window slides open. Anyway, he got me in the house, I gave him one of the keys to keep, and put one on a separate ring in my purse.

I then sat with Ted and talked, settling some details about some lighting he's going to install around here, and just general conversation, and finally, about 5 pm, I ate my nasty cold tacos! Yuck. Still, I am so thankful for friends like Ted. He's such a good guy. When I asked him what I owed him, he just waved his hand and said "Oh, we'll tack it on to something else later." He always says that, but he never does it. He gave me the number of a garage door repairman (the lift spring was broken), I called the guy, he was here in less than an hour. He put a pair of new springs on, adjusted the motor settings, realigned and tightened the tracks, and the thing works like new now, all for $142.00. God provides.

Well, guess I'd better get moving. Got some errands to run, and will pick up Eloise for lunch. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Had this happened to me, I know that unless I had someone at home who needed to use a medical device that was powered by electricity, it would be a minor inconvenience for me to have to wait until the next day for power to be restored. And since I also pay my utility bills online, I could always go to my local library and use their computers.
At one time, I researched installing a solar panel system to power my home. In Canada, some companies offer a plan that has no cost to the homeowner. That company would pay to install and own the system for twenty years and use it to sell excess electricity back to the power company while paying the homeowner a small yearly fee. Then after twenty years, the system ownership transfers to the homeowner at no additional cost. I decided against this for two reasons: real estate agents informed me that such a system would not be attractive to most potential buyers if I decided to sell my home; and, by the time the homeowner owns the system in twenty years, that is near the end of life for the solar panels and they are currently very expensive to replace.

September 25, 2015 - Msg 102794: Poor Horatio, that's another thing that got my goat about this company and in particular the snarky worker. He brushed off my protests while disconnecting me with a self-assured, "You probably got plenty of door hangers."
Of which I didn't receive even one. If I would have seen one of those things on my door handle, you can bet I would have got right on the computer and paid it.
I told the lady I talked to on the phone about this and she just said that they are only required to notify you through the mail. They have an excuse for everything. A "heads up" would have been nice.

MDC, Romeena, possum, thanks for the comments and the tips.

MDC, I didn't have any spoiled food, as even though I wasn't too worried about the refrigerator getting warm enough to spoil the food inside, I still decided to do things the old fashioned way and bought a couple big bags of ice to keep the temp down. I really had an "icebox" for a time there.

And Romeena, I have thought about putting that bill on "auto-pay", though it does burn my buttons that they would have "won" if I did it that way. Nope, I think bringing them down is the way to go. jk. ;-)
I'll tell you what, it at least would give me the freedom to write them complaints whenever I wanted to, without fear that they could retaliate by disconnecting me for not paying a bill or something since it would be automatic.

BTW, I enjoyed your story about your cousin's wife. But I must admit I don't know if I understand the saying "take your bill out of the hat." Is that referring to someone putting all their bills in a hat to see which one they are going to pay first?

MDC, I sometimes like to read the newspaper too, because I like to have it in my hand. Though I don't subscribe to any of them.

MDC, that PATH offers about 18 miles of underground tunnels that connect about 1,200 businesses and government buildings in Toronto. In my over ten years of visiting and living in that area, I never had to use PATH.

Sterling Holobyte, before disconnecting your electricity, doesn't the power company have to confirm that you received a mailed notice by sending it via certified or registered mail requiring a signature? If not, I think they should. Maybe talk to your political representatives to introduce an ordinance or law to make this a requirement for public utilities.

MDC, Thanks for giving me the laugh of the day with your comment about the Speaker being on a "crying jag". I have been chuckling about that all morning, and then what do I hear on the radio? He is leaving office at the end of October. Well that may send me on a crying jag, but they will be tears of joy. Sorry, but he is not much of a friend to conservatives in my book.

Sure been busy. That time of year, and then my only help was off on two weeks vacation. He is back so hopefully things will calm down a bit. I hope so because I need my daily naps.

Sterling, I know here they have a Public Service Commission that deals with the utility companies. One of the things they are required to here is to make sure folks are very aware they are about to lose power or gas service due to non payment. They had a situation a few years back where power was shut-off to a house, and someone who lived there was needing it for medical reasons. Although the utility company gave them ample warning, and had to go through a series of warning letters just about every month because these folks were chronic late payers, the press got a hold of it and made a moulage, and then the legislature made the law about ample notice. I surely understand that needs to be the case, but I can also see the side of the utility company who has to every month fight like mad to get their money. I know that's not your situation. I know a few years ago I owned several rental properties, and every month it was a hassle trying to collect the rent. I heard every excuse you could imagine. And then they might pay half, and say come back next week for the rest. After a while, you just get tired of it. My son in law is going through that right now. He owns a dozen houses that he rents out, and has to go collect every month. But he has resigned himself to that being the case. He has even set up a late fee agreement that folks sign to. Amazingly, they are still late every month, and pay the late fee, so it works out for him I guess. I would get tired of it though.

Well off to Salt Lake for some parts I need. That'll kill half the day. A good way to enjoy a Friday.

September 25, 2015 - Msg 102801: Good morning, porch! It's beautiful here today, just 87° at noon, will probably get into the low 90s today. Not too bad. Cooler weather will be here before long, I guess.

I ordered the spotlights this morning, that will go down the sides and in front of the house. I needed ten, and the seller then told me about a price break if you order twelve, so I got twelve for less than I would have paid for ten. Not a bad deal! Also, because the order was over $50, the shipping was free. I think it's going to look really pretty, and will definitely be a safety feature.

Sterling, that's exactly what my cousin's wife meant when she said she'd take the caller's bill out of the hat. We were all in our early twenties, broke and struggling, and we would try to pay everybody at least something, if not all of what was owed, but some creditors wouldn't accept that. So, apparently she just did a "draw lots" plan, pulled bills out of the stack and paid them until the money was gone. Life is not always easy, and sometimes you do what you have to do. I can remember going to the grocery store with $15, to buy food for the next two weeks, and we made it do. Of course, that was when chicken was 19 cents a pound too, and I could get three meals out of one chicken. Maybe they weren't big old farmhouse meals, but we didn't go hungry.

Eddie has been here, and the yard looks so pretty. My surprise lilies are up and blooming, and I just love them. I've planted them just randomly, all over the place, and squirrels have helped by moving some of them. One popped up and bloomed in a far back corner, and I know perfectly well I didn't plant it there! They're such fun! I just ordered some more from eBay, they should arrive soon. Five of them are purple, and I've never seen a purple surprise lily, so that should be fun, too. I guess they go by a few different names. The true name is Lycoris Radiata, for the red ones. There's a pink one called Lycoris Squamagera, and there are others. My favorite is the Lycoris Radiata, the red one. I'm going to plant a batch of them at my little grandson's grave, because his birthday is September 17, and that's just about the time they bloom. It will be so pretty, to have a batch of them pop up and bloom right at that time.

Now to seriousness for a moment tho...after I read about Francis' talk and heard some highlights on the news, it really bothered me that he got so hung up on the 'social' things, contrived or otherwise, when he could have used the opportunity to talk about our backslid society, or how we need to accept Jesus as Savior, etc.
Millions were watching, yet this wasnt brought up. Well, it was a little bit with his brief comments on traditional family values; but these are days when the world needs to hear more about real
salvation. Then I watched a bit of a service on NBC this morning which to me, IMHO, brought out the whole one world religion scenario. Maybe I get too carried away with this
stuff as several of my own family members have told me, but it is just the way that I am seeing it all.
STERLING--yes, going before your city council for an ordinance would be a great idea. Lord knows I have stood before mine on many occcsions, some with success, some not so; but I can at least say that I tried.
RIOMEEna--your gardens sound wonderful. Our summers pretty well scorch things, but my wife will be planting soon again.

I was planning to write, or call, our elected officials at the State Capital(forget the local officials, I go right to the top), but probably write, since I can do a little better with that medium. Usually.

G-F, you must be an avid fan to stand in line 3 hours for an autograph. When I was in the military, I never had to stand in a line for that long. And as a civilian, I refuse to do that for anyone, unless they were going to give me a worthwhile amount of cash or sign a blank check payable to me.

MDC, regarding how good Barbara Eden looks on Facebook, please remember that celebrities have access to plenty of artificial lighting, some very talented makeup artists, and sophisticated touching-up software. So what you see in print or online may not be a true representation of real life. As an example, some time ago, I took my mother to see some of the stars of the Lawrence Welk program perform when they toured the country during the off-season. After their live performance, they came out to sign autographs. When my mom and I got up close to the Champagne Lady Norma Zimmer (who was in her late 60's), in spite of her makeup, we were able to detect significant signs of aging and not the flawless face we saw when she was on television. Don't me mislead thinking this is an exception. Remember that I have worked in television.

I am still trying to get facts, I don't want to pass along wrong info, there are a lot of rumors going around. I do have nice pictures with her and Clint but they are on my regular camera. So I have to figure hoe to transfere them to my iPad.y
I did have a long political conversation with Morgan Brittney, yes there are actually some conservatives in Hollywood, it was a nice conversation from a nice person. 👍

I just watched the episode where Aunt Bee buys a wig, and I just gotta tell ya, I don't get it. I thought she looked much better with her regular hair. The wig just looked horrible on her IMHO. I don't have a problem with a woman trying to some make up to pretty themselves up, within reason. The ones I do have problems with are middle aged women dressing like they are still teenagers. Even if they still have stuff to flaunt, they just ought not do that. I remember a few years ago I was at a grocery store and there was what looked like to me a Mother/Daughter there shopping. The Daughter who looked to be in her mid teens was dressed in very ordinary clothes. Her Mom, on the other hand was dressed, sort of, in clothing designed to attract a lot of attention, that she was getting from most of the men there. I remember watching the Daughter, and you could almost see the embarrassment on her face. And I thought how sad that was. Usually it's the Mom doing battle with the teenaged Daughter, trying to get her to dress modestly. This was just the opposite. I couldn't help but wonder how that young woman did as she got a little older with the example she was getting.

Sounds like you are having a good old time GF. In spite of the Barbara controversy. I also have heard Morgan Brittany talk before, and what a refreshing conservative voice she is. I have no doubt it has hindered her career in hollyweird. Makes me appreciate her even more.

Boy, last week it was cold, rainy, snowing in the mountains here. Yesterday we were pushing 90. That is about 20 degrees above our normal temps for this time of year.

Guess I better go get ready for preachin. Our family is fasting today for our Daughter and her baby who is due on October 6th. Everything looks good, but we always do this as the delivery date comes close.
