Oh, my goodness! Fawlty Towers! A classic if ever there was one. Did you know there were only twelve episodes of that show? It was sooo funny! It was such a mix of styles - very broad, physical humor, blended with fine-tuned, subtle, highly nuanced humor. The casting was perfect - who can forget Manuel, and the explains-all statement "He's from Barcelona." The Colonel, Sybil and that braying laugh of hers, the two litte spinster sisters - just perfect, the whole thing. I have the collection, but alas, it's on VHS. I'll bet it's on Netflix, will have to check.
It seems to me that we just don't have any classic comedy like that anymore. It used to be that you could turn on the TV and pretty much feel free to watch whatever came on. Now, it's like walking through a minefield. You never know what verbal bombs are going to explode. I'm very particular what I watch with my grandkids. I know, they go to school and play with neighborhood kids, and they've probably heard and seen it all, but by golly, they're not going to hear or see it while sitting in the living room with their grandmother. I simply won't have it.
Well, it's been a long and busy day, and I didn't have but about four hours of sleep last night. I'm thinking a short nap is in order. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

One of my favorite lines from M*A*S*H was when Col. Potter had to tell the troops that an expected cease-fire, just before Christmas, wasn't going to happen. Everyone was understandably very down and depressed, and he said this classic line, "Folks, when you ain't where you are, you're no place." Wow.
Today has been a bittersweet day. My little grandson, Logan, would have been thirteen today, so Eloise and I made our usual visit to his grave out in the little country cemetery. We don't stay long, maybe ten or fifteen minutes, and we don't talk much. It's just a time of reflection, prayer, and gratitude for all the good we've seen come as a result of Logan's brief visit and passing. Also, our REV came to my mind, because he went out there with us once, when he was here for a concert at the same time. We were going to the cemetery, and that's where Babe's Fried Chicken is, in the little town nearby, so he went along with us to the cemetery and then to Babe's. So now, when I go out there, it's sort of a touching point with REV as well. I sure do miss him. What a fine gentleman he was.
Well, I'm ready to get into something cool and comfortable, put some juice in a glass with some club soda to fizz it up, and watch a little TV. Also, Toye Starr has been in here tapping on my knee with her tiny paws - she's ready for a little laptime. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

MDC, initially I was siding with the student, until I saw a picture of the "clock", which did look just like a suitcase bomb. The school was right to be cautious I think. Though I agree, they probably didn't need to haul him away in handcuffs.
I wonder if he will get suspended from school, like the elementary school kid who ate a pop tart into the shape of a gun. A pop tart. Crazy.

September 18, 2015 - Msg 102716:
Good morning, porch. Yep, MDC, that was a big old fiasco for sure, and I agree, the handcuffs were a bit over the top. However, I applaud the school for calling the police. Personally, I'm not comfortable with the notion of having the English teacher or the football coach look at a device like that kid had, and make the decision about what it was. In today's world, I'm glad they "called the man" to determine whether it was some sort of bomb. I think he could have been detained in the office, perhaps, and his device taken to a distant location to await investigation by someone who would know what they were looking at. I wouldn't want to be the teacher who says "oh, it looks okay to me", and then have the thing blow up one end of the school.
And now I'll say it, what everyone else is thinking, or should be. Did they profile? Yes. Should they have done so? Yes. And no. No, because anyone can be a nut and bring a bomb to school, and anyone carrying a suspicious device should have been detained. Yes, because a quick glance at the history of attacks in and on the U.S. in the past few years will tell you where the problem almost always lies. The kid is smart, no question about that, and he is quite capable, I'm sure, of building a lethal bomb if he chooses to do so.
Until this country recognizes, and acknowledges, the fact that Islam is determined to bring America down, by any means, we will know no peace. Yes, I know. There is, theoretically, a difference between mainstream Islam and radical Islam. Can you look at an individual and tell the difference? I can't. If we are to survive as a nation, we're going to have to be able to adopt a "guilty until proven innocent" policy in some areas. It makes me feel sick to say that, but the times, they are a-changin'. It's true.
When my 80-yr-old, confused little daddy was forced to stand and be "wanded" over and over at the airport until he came to tears, because of his knee replacement - when the rest of us surrender our shoes and belts, jewelry, laptops, cameras and all,(I had to pour out a little bottle of homemade raspberry syrup I won on a Mayberry cruise) and find ourselves electronically strip-searched - we are yet expected to let an Islamic kid wander into a school carrying a suitcase with an unidentified wired device inside? Please.
OK, that's my rant. All the PC police please take a number. You'll be called when it's your turn to yell at me. --Romeena
September 18, 2015 - Msg 102717:
I agree with you completely, Romeena. And I am glad someone at the school was suspicious of it instead of looking the other way because they were afraid of being called an "Islamophobe" or some other politically correct label, and have it turn out to be a fully equipped bomb. Better to err on the side of caution. I just hope the judge or jurors who have to decide the inevitable lawsuit against the school see it that way(Yes, I just read that the boy's father is complaining that his son was "tortured" by school officials and the family has already met with their lawyers).

OK, I have one more thing to say, and then I'll shut up, at least for now. I have a dear friend who, whenever talk of this troubled world begins, just smiles sweetly and says "I don't worry. After all, God is in control." That sounds so spiritual and all that, but actually, that's exactly what is just scaring the daylights out of me right now. I fear that God is, indeed, in control, and is making sure that America gets exactly what she's been asking for, for some time now. How presumptuous it is to murmur that God is in control, with the implication being that all will be hunky-dory in America, because He's in control? What gives us the right to assume that He will always make our way smooth?
The Jews were his chosen people, but when they turned their backs on Him, and went their own way, and fell into all sorts of outrageous behavior, He allowed their enemies to overtake them, to enslave them, to almost annihilate them. Look at what we've done. No prayer at sports events. Valedictory addresses edited to leave out any mention of God. The Ten Commandments removed. Crosses torn down. Military chaplains and preachers muzzled. People jailed for speaking up about their faith. Unborn babies slaughtered by the thousands. Se#ual perversions glorified and praised, and now "sanctified", and woe unto anyone who disagrees. It goes on and on. We have people who have perverted our constitution, which was meant to guarantee our religious freedom, and made it an instrument to deny that freedom. Why on earth do we think God is under any obligation to reward us? I agree, He's in control, He always will be, and right now, He just may be using our enemies to punish us for our rebellious and sinful behavior. Yes, I believe God is in control, and it scares me. --Romeena

PH, the Bible says in Matt. 5:45 that God makes the sun to shine and the rain to fall on the just and on the unjust. In other words, we're all in this together, and when we allow the "unjust" to take over and rule, we all suffer the consequences. 2 Chronicles 7:14 says "If my people, which are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sins, and heal their land." Do we see America, in general, doing that? No, quite the opposite.
Ultimately, each person is responsible for his or her own life and behavior. This life is not all of it, and the "just" may suffer here because of the behavior of the "unjust", but in eternity, that won't be the case. James Montgomery said, "Tis not the whole of life to live, nor all of death to die." This life is just a fleeting shadow of what is to come, and whether we accept or reject God on this earth will determine where we spend the unbelievable, unending span of time we have named "eternity." So, if we view this life as the all-important thing, then yes, it does seem unfair, but seen in the big picture, it really doesn't matter. Well, at least that's how I see it. --Romeena

You're right on the money, Romeena. Sometimes I wonder if (some)people who look at what is happening in the world and just say, "Oh well, God is in control." just use that as an excuse to not do anything about it.
We as Christians are supposed to be SALT and light. And salt hurts when it gets rubbed in a wound. If the Word and Ways Of God hurts the delicate modern sensitivities of those who rebel against him and just want to "get along" with the world, so be it. Better they're exposed to that salt and be "offended" here in this life and have the chance of having their heart pr1cked by the Holy Spirit, than to end up for an eternity in h#ll for their folly.
Hey, that's pretty good. I should tell someone. ;-) (Yes, I too, could do more)
Praying you get better for Mayberry Days, Possum. But mainly, just praying for a speedy recovery overall.
I know you all are probably sick of hearing me talk about watching Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. but... here I go again. I thought I was at the end of watching all the episodes I could watch. Well, I just discovered that I had somehow missed a slew of episodes from season 3. It came to me when I remembered that I hadn't watched the "Welsh Rarebit Fiend" episode that I remembered watching a long time before, where Gomer eats a daily dose of Welsh Rabbit and has crazy dreams.
Then I remembered that I hadn't seen the episodes where Gomer meets Lou Ann Poovie for the first time, or the second, or the third. And from there I noticed other episodes from season 3 popping up in the "suggestions" pane on Youtube. Right now I am watching an episode about a crow who steals things from Sgt. Carter and places them on Gomer's locker.
So I have all those to watch yet, and then it makes me wonder how many other episodes from other seasons I am missing.
Guess I need to go look at some episode guides.
Have a nice night, everyone.

sooner or later...it seems the "clock" that the TX kid built was nothing but an old 1970s alarm clock that he took out of the plastic casing, and put in a pencil box. You have to read this article...http://tinyurl.com/nguw2ek
A new and very interesting week coming up full of
many world events.
Prayers,

MDC, back In the day we actually DID build our own clocks and other electoral marvels! Remember the "Heath" kits? There was always something cool to build. My cousin and I built a two-way radio.
I remember making my Son his own "Ghost Buster" back pack using old electronic parts, lights, switches, buzzers ect. It was cool, better than ones they sold in the stores at the time. I think he still has it packed away somewhere...... Sorry kid, been there done that, and didn't even have the Prez tell me it was "cool"....lol

Check out this video http://youtu.be/xrmR8zX3vk8 I bet PH did this as a kid too... He probably made his own bread boards too...And these kids "think" they invented something..haha
Us Old Schoolers learned it from the "Best Generationers" but I suppose you can get an "app" for it now-a-days.....lol
As I said above, who needed the Prez's approval whe you saw the look in your kids eyes when you fired it up with all the lights sounds ect. But I have to admit, when my Son shows me new stuff on the computer I do have that same look of amazement when I learn something.... Go figure!....G-F again

possum under a rock, last night, I did some searching using "meet n greet" and "mayberry days" and "2015" as my keywords. According to http://heyevent.com/event/p2hnpa35joib6a/mayberry-days-parade-2015 , I learned that celebrity meet n greet sessions are scheduled for after the 9:00 a.m. parade on Saturday. But nothing about the exact location.
A complete listing of what TAGS celebrities are scheduled to appear can be found at http://www.surryarts.org/mayberrydays/index.html
Finally, Floyd will be conducting a live chat tonight at 8p.m. eastern time. Hopefully, he will have more details to offer. If not, you can always post questions for him to answer live. Make an appearance at http://imayberry.com/podcasts/live/ to join in. G-F attends often and appears as Goober Fife. Also, I will make an effort to be present tonight.
I just learned about that Texas teenager who brought a modified clock to his school and got arrested. While it is sad to learn that the teacher believed it to be an explosive device, I don't think we can fault the teacher. And I don't think we could blame the police for the way they handled it. Unless these people had special explosives training to help them recognize whether a threat is valid or not, I see nothing wrong with being cautious by assuming a worse case scenario until an investigation can be conducted by knowledgeable personnel.
While studying engineering and serving in the military, I learned that many electronic products can be used, or modified, as a triggering device for an explosive device. This includes such common devices as wrist watches, cellphones and transmitters that remotely start and lock our vehicles. In this Texas incident, although there were no explosives attached to the clock, if the triggering device transmitted radio waves, the explosives could be some distance away.
Because potential triggering devices are very common or can be disguised, this means that almost everyone of us can be arrested if someone gets suspicious, or is paranoid.

Thanks for doing some research for me about the Mayberry stars meet & greet, P-H. Unfortunately, I will be involved with something during the time of the podcast and won't be able to join in. If you or G-F get the chance to be a part of it,I would appreciate if one of you fellas could find out the "when" & "where" of the meet up. Thanks so much!

Message 102745 mentioned Barbara Eden as one of the
stars coming to MD. Well, this past weekend "Antenna TV" had a 50 episode IDOJ marathon, including the very first episode. As I watched it, I thought, "Wow, pretty risque as Jeanne danced around Tony's house in only a man's white dressshirt!"
For all the worry of the censors to not show a belly button, I guess all else was OK! ha. Allen Melvin was in it too.
Today I saw the professor on Gunsmoke!
GF__I am so old that my Heathkit came with vacuum tubes!! :) I see that the Browns won this week, and my Cards mauled the Bears.
PH--Interesting stuff. My point was that he didnt really "invent" anything at all!
When does Mayberry Days start??

Possum, I was going to suggest you may want to try emailing Floyd at "Sarah(at)Mayberry.com", but I see G-F already has you covered. Good job, G-F! I have emailed Floyd there and he has always replied.
MDC, I think I would have liked to have seen that episode. ;-)
Barbara Eden was/is quite the looker.
...that's Looker. With an 'L'.

Yep, MDC in a couple of days I can confirm that for you!...G-F 👍....

MDC, regarding your Msg 102759, I still find it strange when a Christian makes a reference to mother nature instead of God.
Also, regarding your Msg 102755, I agree with you about that young teenager who was arrested for bringing a modified clock to school. It was not until I listened to him being interviewed did I learn he claims to "invent" things. Since it seems that this clock was constructed by placing existing circuitry in a different enclosure, I would consider it to be more of a modification rather than an invention.

Just watched "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street" episode of Twilight Zone on Netflix. One of Barney's first girlfriends, Miss Rosemary, appeared as a character in this episode.
Also, this past weekend, I sold off some of my parent's bedroom furniture. When they were removing my mother's dresser, I noticed some printing on the rear of the unit. It had a 1952 date along with the name of the manufacturer. And although I did not notice the name of the company, it was the location of the company that caught my eye. It was in Mr. Airy, North Carolina, the childhood home of Andy Griffith.

Mrs. Rosemary, isn't she the one who played one of the Baldwin sisters on The Waltons? Maybe it's just me, but it just seemed odd that she and Barney would be an item, because even then she seemed so much older than Barney. Or maybe I am thinking about someone else.
Poor Horatio, do you know of any algebra sites that show you step by step, and explain each step, to figure out equations?
I know you said you would be willing to let me email you with questions, and while I really appreciate you for that, just don't think that is feasible all the time, for various reasons.
Kai just had another crying jag tonight, because she was not understanding the algebra. And I can't help her very much because I don't understand much of it either.
My wife understands a lot more of it, but she doesn't have a whole lot of patience. In fact, that was a big part of why Kai was upset. I had to force Kai back downstairs to work on it with her, and when my wife finally started to help her without ridiculing her, Kai actually did pretty well. I had my wife teach me a little of it, and once I could see it, I wanted to do more. Though there are some types of problems which I don't understand yet, and I would really like to, if only to help Kai.
What I did was write the steps down one by one, and I am wondering if that would help Kai. A lot of the sites I have looked up show you how it's done, but most don't show WHY you do something, which I think is important to a math-illiterate like me. I write little notes as to why I am doing a particular thing. That is the way I always learn best and it helps me to retain what I've learned. I did the same thing when learning new computer stuff at any job I had. Just wondering if you had any ideas.
Speaking of seeing people from TAGS on other shows, I caught another glimpse of Mr. Schwump on a Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C.(No, I still haven't finished watching them all yet). It was on an episode titled, "One of our shells is missing" and Mr. Schwump is in a scene where Gomer and Sgt. Carter are looking for a lost mortar shell(live) and they go to a military surplus store to look for it. Mr. Schwump is just leaving as they are going in. I still wonder what Mr. Schwump bought. He left with a pretty decent sized bag.
I also wonder if we'll ever know the real person behind him and why he is in so many good shows. Maybe he is an angel.
That's neat about the dresser, PH. Too bad you couldn't have snatched it up before anyone else bought it. It would be kind of nice to have a little be of (the real)Mayberry.
