PH--I was just very busy yesterday, but wanted to wish all a happy 4th. The parenthetical phrase was just to be

In fact, i dont want to beat a dead horse, but one thing we have not looked at regarding GS and GM is past history. Many historians, including the author of The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire, believe that the decline started after romans were OK with such activity. It eventually got worse, led to the infamous sx orgi@s, etc, and it also entered their once invincible military, creating a moral and disciplinary breakdown. Then, at that time, there was a rise in barbarians, and it is they who attacked and killed at will, and pillaged as the weakened Roman army was crushed. similarities to our situation today. I saw an article where our Marine Corps is looking for FOREIGN ships to station it's soldiers and planes because our fleet has been depleted so badly. But one might say, we have no rise in Barbarians! Oh really? can anyone say ISIS? It is one of the most ruthless and killing armies that is on the rise in a big way, and already in all 50 states.
I'm not saying that this will happen tomorrow, but just sitting by and saying OK for SSM is the start of that fissure in the fabric of our society. They will want more and more and more. Jesus said that we were to be
a LIGHT to the world, to be SALT to the earth in such situations. The 10 commandments are still in effect, but how many can even
name them all anymore? I miss Rev's goodness and preaching. He was the real deal, real salt, and real light. He said it like it is, and the emailes we'd exchange were similar to my soapbox above.
PH, as you mentioned, we respect each other here, and I just felt that I had to say that, and say it that
strongly. I am far from perfect, but I am a catholic who is even questioning some of the pope's
recent statements. I have never written to a pope before, but I have written to him three times now

Do any of you use a cell phone company called EOS Mobile? They are supposed to be a conservative company that gives a portion of your money for conservative causes, as opposed to other cell phone companies who give to liberal causes.
I thought this was a good idea, and since I am looking for a no-contract phone I thought I would give them a look, but goodness, I can't seem to find any reviews of their service anywhere on the net other than their own website and maybe one other article that just talks about the company and what they do.
Now, this could be because they are relatively new, but you would think there would be someone talking about them, good or bad. They have a 30 day return policy if it doesn't work well for you, but I still like to know something about what people think of the service before I send anybody any money.
I was initially going to go with Trac Fone until I discovered that they are basically Obamaphones and get a huge amount of money from the government for that. So I know what our money will be going to if I buy from them.
Or does anyone have any suggestions on a good, no-contract phone company; maybe one that you yourself use? Doesn't matter if they don't have smart phones with internet capability since I just use a regular, simple "dumb" phone. And that's just the way I like it!

G-F, you're not the only one with a no contract, pay-as-you-go flip phone. I have posted this before here that I have two phones; a Canadian smartphone (with data) and a US no contract, pay-as-you-go flip phone (no data).

Sterling Holobyte, in the last year and a half, my Verizon no contract, pay-as-you-go flip phone service cost me only $100 (about $5.50/month) because I don't use it much. Although I'm charged about $1.50 for every day I make outgoing calls, I have unlimited US voice and text for that entire day. So I consolidate all my calls to the same day. If I need to make more frequent calls on multiple days, I use Skype (through my computer) that gives me unlimited US/Canada voice calls for $3/month.
I'm not sure if Verizon still offers this pay-as-you-go plan with no data. When I visit http://tinyurl.com/o3lbnfx and click on the PAY-AS-YOU-GO icon, I'm directed to pre-paid plans with monthly fees and not pay-as-you-go.

July 07, 2015 - Msg 101919: Good evening, porch. Sterling, I'm afraid I can be of no help to you. My phone is a Samsung android, the "Note" or whatever its name is. It does a whole lot more than I know how to do with it. My son got it for me, and put it on his family account, so I'm an "add-on" for about $10 a month, through Sprint. I really was fine with my little old ten-year-old Motorola flip-phone, which was costing me about $50 a month, but the grandkids started complaining that they couldn't "text" me. So, my son got this android for me, and I have to admit, I really enjoy it. The kids send me texts, my granddaughter sends something almost every day and keeps me current on the happenings in her life. I get pictures of spectacular flowers from my daughters, pics of pets in action, just whatever. Since in reality it costs me nothing (my son pays the $10 and won't accept it from me) I just enjoy the benefits.

One fun thing - one of the grandkids found a ringtone on Zedge and installed it on my phone as the notification for a text message. It's a silly little chipmunky voice saying "I saw a squirrel! He was doin' like this - chk, chk, chk!" Hilarious. My incoming call ringtone is the TAGS theme, whistled. When it sounds off, everyone in the room looks at me! Pretty funny.

Well, guess I'll hit the hay. Toye Starr and I slept late this morning, so I may have to watch TV for a while before I get sleepy, but that's okay. I can sleep late again tomorrow, if I choose. This "retired" stuff is pretty cool. Blessings, all. --Romeena

We did have use a Verizon no contract plan for my daughter(back when we all had Verizon), but that ran us $50 a month just for hers. But you certainly got a good deal there.

My situation right now is that my wife and I are with US Cellular, because my wife gets a small discount with them because of her Indian tribe; they have some agreement or something.
We didn't put Kai on our plan because we were trying to cut costs and I didn't really think she needed a phone anyway since I was with her all the time. Well, her grandma(my mother-in-law) decided to stick her nose in and bought Kai a smartphone and put her on HER plan. And, from what my wife says, her mom feels she kind of "owns" Kai since she pays for her cell phone and service, so I really want to get her out of that nonsense.
Soooo, my wife was hinting that she wants to do this deal she has seen advertised by US Cellular for two lines with an upper data package for $100, which is pretty much what we pay for our talk and text we have now for the two of us.
Since I don't want, nor need, a smartphone, I suggested that she and Kai do that US Cellular deal, and I will just go it alone with a simple no-contract phone, since I don't use mine that much anyway.
My wife was really for that plan, though I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that she likes to get a new, bigger and better phone every couple years, while I'd keep a phone forever if I could.

Anyway, that's why I am looking for a cheap, but reliable, no-contract phone, preferably pay-as-you-go like you have, PH, but I will go with a monthly plan if it is inexpensive enough. I have seen some, but am still shopping around.
They have a good one at that EOS Mobile that I talked about, but as I've said, I don't really know that much about them and whether or not they are legitimate.

So G-F, is that a Consumer Cellular phone you have, or a Cricket? I don't remember what company that commercial is for off-hand.

Sterling, I have a AT&T pay as you go phone, what works for me is that when I USE it it charges me $1 and everyone who has AT&T service it's FREE! Since most of the people I call have that service it works for me. "Why pay for more than ya need" as the commercial says... But texts are 20 cents each.

July 07, 2015 - Msg 101927: Good afternoon, porch. Another hot one here on my porch. Cloudy, but I don't think there's any rain in them thar clouds! It seems strange, after all the flooding and everything we've had, but we do need some rain. The lakes are full, a few rivers are still swollen, and I'm sure the deep groundwater is fully replenished, but the surface, where the flowers and grass and shrubbery live, it's getting dry. I've had to run my sprinklers already, about three times.

Let it be known that if I was paying a single-user rate for my phone, I wouldn't have what I have. However, since it's only $10 to add me to my son's service, and he even pays that, I just enjoy the phone. I even play "Free Cell" on it if I have to sit and wait somewhere, like a doctor's office or whatever.

Here's a funny story. One of my daughters has a SIL who has two adorable but wild and out-of-control little kids. Whenever they're around, it's bedlam. I'm told that in their own home, it's even worse. So for a while my daughter had the "Looney Tunes" cartoon theme music as the ringtone for that SIL. I think she finally changed it, lest the SIL hear it and be offended, but it was so true!!! I haven't set up distinctive ringtones for certain people, but I'm thinking about it. One of my kids has one for me when I'm calling - it's a voice saying "Answer the phone! It's yore mama!!" Hilarious!

Well, guess I'd better go get a few things done around here. I think Toye Starr has left a tiny monument on the sunroom floor, the little brat. She knows better, but she will still do it now and then. Thank goodness, the floor is tile. She piddles in her box, faithfully, but now and then, she just feels called upon to leave her signature. Eight years old - she knows better! However, she also knows I wouldn't raise a hand to her. Shoot, I barely raise my voice! How can you get tough with something that doesn't even weigh five pounds? One day I was scolding her and shaking my finger in her face, and she stretched her little snoot out and licked my finger! Now how do you deal with that? It's like the toddler who hugs your legs and says "I wuv you, Mama" in the middle of a scolding. You just hush, that's what you do. You're done.

Also, if you'll read the comments below the original video in this link, you'll find one that is just hilarious. It's a one-liner, and I won't quote it here, but it's a keeper. Best suggestion I've heard in a long time. Maybe someone in the audience with that particular ringtone could activate it???

Also in the comments, I noticed a lot of people who feel, as I do, that the present-day cartoons are boring, not funny, and show little imagination or talent. The old days, before it was all done with computers, cartoons were funny! The old Tom and Jerry, Bugs, Porky, Donald Duck, Roadrunner, and heaven forgive us, Speedy Gonzales. How insensitive of us to have a cartoon character who sore a big sombrero and spoke with an accent!

Honestly, this PC thing has just run right off the rails. It's ridiculous. I just hope they don't discover the "Designing Women" episode where the women dressed up as the Supremes, and Suzanne showed up in dark makeup. It was hilarious, and if I were a black person, I would have found it to be funny, not offensive. Honestly, it's a fact of life. People of African descent have dark brown skin. Some, from certain areas in Africa, are truly almost black. God made them that way. People of Hispanic heritage generally have light brown skin, though some from certain areas of Spain are blond and blue-eyed. Full-blood American Indians have a reddish cast to their bronze-brown skin. People from most of Asia have a yellow-gold tint to their skin. Finally, people from much of Europe are generally light-skinned. Why do these facts have to be carefully ignored and not mentioned? It's nothing to be ashamed of. It's due to a little thing called "genes" and we all have them, can't control them, and shouldn't want to. A Mexican friend once laughingly told me that I was a "bolilla." A bolillo is a small, oval-shaped loaf of bread, like a baguette, only much smaller. The term is used in Mexico to refer to lighter-skinned people, and particularly Americans. It can be a friendly joke, or it can be an insult, depending on the intentions of the speaker and how it's said. My friend was teasing, and I took no offense, of course.

Why does everyone have to have their horns out all the time, just creating insults where none was intended? I wish America would just relax, grow up, and get along. Personally, I miss little Speedy Gonzales. He was cute, and my Mexican friends agree. They miss him, too. He was their "little hero." --romeena

I'm from San Antonio, and Pedro was a familiar sight around town, before he got "discovered" by John Wayne and made it into the movies. He was often seen at fairs, grand openings, and very frequently on local TV shows. He was a master at deadpan comedy, and had perfect comic timing. His trademark was the clothes he wore. He was "slopin'" before anybody else had even heard of it. He wore a long knit shirt, with pants well below the great divide, but apparently they were sewn to his shirt, because they never slipped, in spite of his dancing and comic behavior. He was known to be a friendly, kind and funny man, and was a great favorite in ol' San Antone!

Good for the Nova Scotia police. Glad to see they like kids, and have a sense of humor. Cute little boy!

Oh, heavens yes, G-F. Gotta be careful not to offend anyone. Never mind that TV shows usually portray a Texan as speaking like they're barely literate, and with a drawl that I've never actually heard in real life. Yes, I have a Texas drawl, but it still sounds like civilized speech. Of course, it gets more pronounced when I'm angry or upset about something. My Dale used to say I was the only person he knew who could make five syllables out of a single-syllable word. Well, after he lived here a few years, he "talked Texan" too. You know, there is something to that slower speech thing, though. I have trouble understanding people who speak very rapidly. I just can't follow them. So I just say, "Excuse me, but my Texas ears don't listen very fast, so would you mind slowing your speech just a little?" That usually gets a laugh, and cooperation.

I get about three calls a day on my landline from various telemarketers, and just for fun, as one today was for solar panels, I told the lady that I was 'off the grid.' She said What? Then I found out she was in a call center in Pakistan, so I just started in with 'do you know Jesus?' and we ended up talking for about 10 minutes about the Lord and the diffences in our beliefs. I really think I touched her heart, and said she should check out Christian TV that is beamed into Pakistan. Maybe one day I'll see her in heaven.

Mercy sakes, we sure had some thunder storms rumble through here last night. Got over an inch of rain in an hours time. That's a lot for us. We needed it for sure. More expected tonight and tomorrow.

Hey MDC, That's an excellent idea, start witnessing to those telemarketers. They used to really tick me off, but I have taken to start messing with them a little bit. My goal is to see how fast I can get them to hang up on me, rather than the other way around. Nothing bad. I'll just start rambling on. They often will start out,
"and how are you doing today sir"? And I start rambling on with a long list of aches, pains, personal problems, not giving them a chance to even start there spill. It is actually quite fun to do. Very few of them stay on the line for very long, and if they do, I will continue to engage them with more stories. A couple I have even asked why I haven't heard from them in some time, and let me bring you up to date about all that's been going on. :)

Romeena, Thanks again for that jigsaw puzzle website link. My wife has really been enjoying that. She loves jigsaw puzzles, and this is a great way for her to be entertained while bed bound.

I can't offer you any help with the phone question Sterling. Mine is supplied by my work, and it's a simple old flip phone. They offered me a smart phone a year or so ago, but I didn't want to mess with it. I like the size of my flip phone. I suppose I may upgrade at some point. I do have a Kindle Fire that I use a lot. I have all my scriptures loaded on it and take it to preaching with me. Love that.

Well off to work. They are feeding us lunch today, so I am taking my appetite with me.

July 09, 2015 - Msg 101938: I have tried a few things with the telemarketers, none of which seem too successful. I have no use for them, sorry to anyone who might be in that field. When you take your phone to unlisted, that is a clear sign you DON'T WANT TO BE CALLED. The telemarketers use computerized dialing to circumvent that. It's no different than Barney trying to sell vaccuums and ignoring a "No Solicitors" sign out front of Emma's place.

Anyway, a couple of memorable events. I used to tell them "Just a minute" when they'd ask for the head of household, then just lay the phone down. Once I forgot I'd done that, and 15! minutes later, picked it up and said "Hello?" The telemarketer was still there! Of course, I said "Just a minute" and laid the phone down again.

Another time, I just started chanting "No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no........" as they went into their spiel. It took her a while to realize what I was doing, and she was greatly upset, to my great amusement. She said "Oh, I see, you're going to keep saying no." I continued chanting "no" and she said "I think I'll call back tomorrow", and so I continued with a single very emphatic NO!, no, no, no". It was hard to contain my laughter and keep saying no, but she finally tired of it and hung up. Too bad we don't have Sarah around to screen calls for telemarketers.

July 09, 2015 - Msg 101939: Happy Thursday porch, hope all is well this morning. looks like everyone is having a pretty good summer so far.

Northeast Tennessee was hot and dry the month of June and so far it has rained almost everyday the month of July.

My work has been pretty steady and have been working some late days. my business partner is getting ready to retire the end of this month which will create some changes for me. we have shared the practice for 12 years so now it will be just me. hopefully, things will sort themselves out.

not much else to report from my end of the porch.
Patrick is working for a mowing and landscaping service this summer and will go back to college the end of August. Beth will start her last year of college in August as well. time is flying by.

My un-favorites are the ones who offer you a "lower rate" on your high-interest credit card, and then ask you which card you want them to lower. You're supposed to give them the number!! Of course, I'm going to just give my credit card number to some voice on the phone. Eloise's husband, Jerry, got into it with one of them a while back. He usually just hangs up on them, but he was in a cranky mood, so decided to annoy her a little. She asked him for the number, and he told her to tell him which one she was willing to lower. This went back and forth until she finally said, "You're just wasting my time!" Jerry said, "Well, you called me, I didn't call you. You're wasting MY time!" At that, she started cursing at him, called him a string of foul words, and he just said, "If you've got children, I'll bet they'd be really proud of you right now" and hung up.

My thing is like Asa's, except I switch into a shaky, weak little-old-lady voice (it's getting easier all the time) and start rambling about my illnesses, gory descriptions of a surgery, whatever. They hang up pretty fast. I really like what MDC is doing. Never thought of that. What a good idea!

Asa, I'm delighted that your wife is enjoying that website. It's a good one, and I play there quite often. Remember, if she has any questions about what it will do and how it works, I'm here.

Regarding telemarketers, although I have tried a few things to discourage them, my favorite is to talk to them in a language I guarantee they will not understand. This may sound strange, but you don't have to know any foreign language to accomplish this. Rather than use an established language that the telemarketer might also be familiar with, I respond by talking gibberish. That always ends the conversation quickly. This works even after you answer the telephone with "hello", and they ask for you by name and you respond with "yes" because those two English words are commonly known among people who don't speak English. And the best part about speaking gibberish is that this will ensure that you won't accidentally encounter a telemarketer who understands your "foreign" language.

July 09, 2015 - Msg 101944: I just had a sudden idea, and had to pop back in to tell you about it. We have such a big old dust-up going right now in this country. Private business owners are being sued, fined by county functionaries, hit with gag orders when they protest, and all that mess. At the same time, any and all symbols of the 1800s and anything to do with the civil war of that century are being systematically removed. No more Confederate flags, no statues of Southern military leaders, they're trying to tear them all down. I'm sure we all have our own opinions on both issues, and we should. That's America, and we're supposed to be entitled to them. However, lately it seems we're only entitled to think the way the government thinks we should think. But that's another story. Here's my question:

What do you think would happen if I walked into a bakery, any old bakery, and ordered a cake, decorated to look like the Confederate flag? Let's say the baker refuses, so I begin to yell about "discrimination." Which side do you think the government would fall on?

Or to make it even more interesting, suppose I asked for that cake to be decorated in red icing with a big, ugly black swastika across the top of it?

OK...different subject...a while back some you you mentioned your stupid gasoline tricks. Well, I had one too. When I was 13, I was disappointed that AZ didnt allow fireworks, so right around dusk on July 4th I decided to make my own. I poured about an inch of petrol into a coffee can, placed the can in the middle of the alley behind our house, taped a match to the end of a broom stick, and WOO-O-O-O-O-SSS-HHH,
with a roar there was flame going straight up about 10 feet in the air!! Neighbors came running out from all around, my mom and dad came running out,
and I had a sore rear end for about a week, and not due to the flame!!!
Why do boys have such facination with fire???
Here's a hot joke for ya all...It's so hot in Phx, that the bird eggs don't need mother to sit on em, they just hatch themselves! haha

July 10, 2015 - Msg 101949: One mor thing I may add, ever tho our generation was not "The Greatest Generation" like our parents, we did pretty well in having fun and learning how to solve problems and developed curious problem solving minds.... Yep, we may not be the sharpest knives in the drawer but at least we had a place IN the drawer.... Heaven help this generation, they don't even know what a kitchen is let alone finding the drawer!!

Oh, while I was on the site, I entered a comment, based on the question I asked in 101944. Friends, this is getting serious, and it's going to get worse before it gets better. Some members of the LGBT community are not content with the victory the court handed them, they want to rub everyone's nose in their lifestyle, everyone to pat them on the head and tell them what good boys and girls they are, and how everyone agrees with them and praises their lifestyle. That's the agenda, and they're not going to shut up until they get. Whatever happened to "live and let live"? All that baloney about "equal access" and such - that's a smoke screen. I'm not going to walk into a Muslim-owned bakery and demand an Easter cake in the shape of a cross, and "Christ Died for You" written on it. They would refuse, and they should, because my only reason for going to them would be to cause trouble, and that applies in these "gay wedding cake" trials. Who do they think they're kidding? Thousands of bakeries, many of them gay-owned - come on, folks. Get a grip!

It just sickens me that this little couple, with their bakery, are being pushed to financial ruin because of the hateful, spiteful, bigoted intentions of a couple of women. I personally know a female "couple" and they would never, ever, ever consider doing something like this. They're my friends, they're nice people, they mind their own business, and I'm sure they hate it when something like this happens. You know what I think? I think when people pull a stunt like this, and force the issue, probably causing financial ruin for someone, I think they're acting out because they don't like themselves very much. They're not happy with themselves, or anyone else. It's sad, really. They're pitiful and pathetic, and I know I should be praying for them, but I don't feel much like it. I guess I'll try.

OK, enough of that. Sorry. It just gets my dander up when bully tactics are used against Christian people who are trying to be true to their faith, as they see it. Where are their rights? --Romeena

ALL---Boy, I wish i could go back to the early '60s again when I was growing up. It WAS different back then, it is not just in my head.
My dad would throw the car keys on the floor of the drivers side each night, many times our door was left unlocked at night. We played outside with no worries. Despite Barney's mistake, sin was INDEED talked about from the pulpit, and the 10 commandments were our guide. 10 foot burst of flames got this 13 year old a good spanking!! But I got a paper route at 11, collected money each evening from customers, paid a weekly bill, and made a few dollars. We rode our bikes all over the place, played in neighbors' front yards, and we're home for a hot meal by 6 PM each evening.
We had a stay-at-home loving mom, and a faithful, working, loving dad. We camped every summer and drove thru many states learning of our heritage from stops at Lincoln's Tomb to Mt. Rushmore. Those were wonder years of growing up in a decent America where Christianity was not ridiculed on TV or anywhere. Maybe that is why we long for a 1962 episode of Mayberry, I know it's why I do! :)

I'd even put some B-B cards on the spokes for ya MDC.... Mine was a Western Flyer Wildcat lime green with a red stripe racing tire and Banana seat. Cool bike, right up to when it got stolen! Rat Finks!!! I had Just finished waxing it up to boot! The insur@nce covered a new one but the purple goose was not the same level of Coolness.... One of life's first lessons that theirs a cruel world out there!

July 11, 2015 - Msg 101961: Good morning, porch! It's a gorgeous day here, sunny and clear with a light breeze, and so far, just 81°. It will get into the low 90s today, but right now, it's very comfortable.

You boys describing your happy childhoods just makes me feel happy. I realize that not every American kid had such a great life, but most of us did. Now, I think it's reversed. Maybe not. Maybe I'm just getting old and cranky, but when I look around me, I don't like what I see. There are still some families that look like what we remember, but they're no longer the majority. However, I don't think it has to remain like this. I think it can still be turned around and salvaged. It's going to have to begin with us, though. If it continues this deterioration much longer, those of us who remember how it was, and could be again, will be gone. The young generation has no memories of anything better, nothing to inspire a pushback from them.

G-F, I didn't know you were in the market to buy some fleas - I wish I had known! To my horror, I found one on Toye Starr a few days ago, and I could have saved it for you! Instead, it met a swift and untimely demise. Instantly captured and executed, believe me! One advantage to having a small, snow-white dog - a flea cannot hide or escape. First of all, there's not much canine real estate for him to hide in, and he couldn't hide anyway. He's so visible, he might as well be carrying a flag and beating a drum. Yep, the life expectancy of a flea who dares to get on my baby is measured in minutes, maybe seconds. I'm afraid I may be seeing more of them, though. All that rain has caused a proliferation of them, according to her vet. She never goes outside, but when I work in the yard, I could be bring them in on my shoes or clothes. I have "yard shoes" at the front and back doors, and take them off when I enter the house, but the miserable flea things could be on my clothes as well. So far, I've only seen that one, but I'll be watching!

Well, guess I'd better get busy. David is home from his mission trip to Wales, and the family is coming over for pork chops tonight. I've got to head for the grocery store! Blessings, friends. --Romeena
