Luther, Floyd has set up the porch to automatically sweep when it reaches a certain number, so it really is who happens to post at that magical number. I just wish I could do the same thing with cleaning the house, just program a computer and woosh, it sweeps and cleans itself.

Luther Heggs, allow me to explain "sweep the porch" for you and other newbies. This porch has been in existence since about 1996 so there have been a whole lot of postings made here. There have been three different hosts (#1 was Frank, #2 was Ollie and #3 is Floyd) so the counter has been reset two times. Floyd's version is approaching 100,000 postings (see the Msg number for each posting).
To prevent the current active page from getting very large and thereby becoming slower and slower to load, our host, Floyd, has programmed it to stop posting on a page when a certain size has been reached. That completed page is then archived on a server. You can view all the archives by clicking on the ARCHIVES link at the bottom of the current active page.
When the page switch occurs, the first person to post on the new page is said to have "swept the porch". Since we are a "porch", that first person has indirectly cleared off (swept) all the old postings from the porch. Because this has become a tradition here, that person who is first to post on the new page makes some kind of comment that they have swept the front porch. None of us know ahead of time when Floyd's programming selects one of us to sweep the porch until after they post and notice their posting is first on the new page.

Then I woke up to the antics of my little resident comic, and was laughing before I ever even got out of bed. I know I've said it before, but that is such a blessing. Luther Heggs, the porch sweep is actually an automatic function put in place by our friend Floyd. When the page reaches a certain length, it automatically archives it and opens a new page. At least, that's my understanding. Also, you'll notice a link just below the comment box, that says "Let me know if the porch needs a sweep." Again, that's Floyd. That link will bring up an email to him. We are to use that when we've been visited by an interloper who appears to be trying to cause trouble. It doesn't happen often, but in the past years, we have had some doozies. Floyd deletes the offensive post, and blocks their ISP ID so they can't get to the porch again, at least not from the same computer. Cool dude, that Floyd. Who knew our gentle barber could be such a techie?
G-F, sounds like you're in the "cook it apart from the bird" camp. My family always cooks it in and around the turkey, so about the only thing I can do ahead of time is chop the onions and celery. The rest of the process has to be done immediately before the turkey goes in the oven. The bird is pre-warmed by rinsing the cavity with hot tap water, and the blistering hot stuffing going into the warm bird means the oven doesn't have to warm a cold center. It speeds cooking time and assures complete "doneness." I cook a stuffed 18-lb bird in about 3 hours. When it comes out, forget the beautiful presentation of a perfectly browned bird on a platter. We just scoop the dressing out, and slice the bird in the roaster. You can't lift it, as it would just fall apart. Most of us prefer the dark meat (white meat is great for sandwiches the next day), so I cook four extra thighs, just nestled next to the turkey. Lots of dark meat! However, for those who prefer white, that meat is so juicy and tender it could almost make a convert out of me! I know there are those who say cooking the stuffing with the bird will make you sick, but I've done it for 55 years, and no one has ever gotten sick yet. I think it's all in how it's done.
Well, got to get busy. I still haven't cleaned out that miserable fridge. The one in the garage is done, but the one in the house still has a lot of unnecessary stuff in it, that's destined for the disposer or the trash. So, off I go! Have a happy day. --Romeena

Haha! PH, that's a great idea, but it would be very hard to do. Getting the camera turned on and focused would distract her, and all I'd have would be a shot of her nose, investigating the camera!
G-F, the reason that stuffing from inside the bird tastes so much better is that it has absorbed some of the juices out of the turkey. I use a really big, black enamel roaster pan, and after I stuff the turkey cavities, I just pile the rest of the stuffing around the turkey. It covers the thighs and even part of the drumsticks. The bird is just nestled down in the stuffing. As the juices start to "puddle" on top of the stuffing, I spoon them up and over the bird. If you cut little slits in the skin along the sides of the breastbone, the juice will run down and into the white meat, and it's so tender and moist when it's done. Yum, I can hardly wait!
Well, guess I'll go cook my cranberries. I like my cranberry sauce to be cold, and that will be one less thing to cook tomorrow. Also need to start draining the fruit for the ambrosia. It's better when it sits in the fridge overnight. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

St Susan was over tonight and we made our pies and casseroles. I put the dressing together, except for the turkey broth that I will add before baking it. I always bake it in a dish, not in the turkey. Its just how my mom made it, so I learned that way. So, tomorrow I have to cook the turkey, cook the sweet potatoes, make mashed potatoes, tea, and the last minute stuff. I think that will try to turn in early.

Good morning, porch! Another beautiful day, clear skies, no wind, 40° but will warm up. Eddie was here yesterday and cleaned up all the leaves, and this morning there are more on the ground than there were before he came! They're falling fast. The ones that remain on the trees are finally turning color, but they're a little late. That hard freeze we had a week or so ago just zapped most of them and they turned brown, dried up and fell off! The ones that are left, mostly in the middle of the trees, have turned a beautiful gold, and will be gone in a few days. I love this time of year, and wrote a little blog about it a while back. I am so grateful for all my blessings. I pray for my country, and for God to give us the strength and wisdom to fight the growing threat to our freedom that looms over us. Hope all of you had a great Thanksgiving. We do, indeed have much to be thankful for in this great country.
We had a smaller gathering than usual but it was peaceful and I enjoyed it. I had a good time cooking for everyone and it was all so good. No fights or problems between Bruce's relatives because there were only a few of them here. ;) Everyone was gone by four, so I could chill and just enjoy the rest of the evening. Sean and I went out and took a drive tonight since the weather is so nice. We actually saw some Christmas lights. Tomorrow we will have our Thanksgiving with St. Susan's family at her house.
I heard from my best childhood buddy, Cynthia today. We have prayed for her here on the porch off and on. She has been fighting breast cancer for several years. I was so, so thankful that she sounded better today than she has in years. Thank you, God, for that! It really made my day. I think she has been free from the cancer for awhile now. Wish you could all know her. She was so much fun when we were growing up and we had and we could certainly get into some mischief, but she was one of those free spirits of the 70s. She looked like Cher, with the long black hair and she was so independent, opinionated, always knew what she wanted, and was the most loyal friend of my childhood. Never a fight, or a disagreement between us. Loved her and still do. God please take care of her.
Well, I have been up since 4:30 and have felt great all day, but its about time to rest. Love to all. I am VERY, VERY thankful for you!!

Well, quiet has returned to my house, and Toye Starr just breathed a sigh of relief and settled down beside me. I had the turkey in the oven by 9:45, is completely done and falling apart by 1:00. He weighed 19 lbs and I tucked four extra thighs in with him, packed the cavities and all around the outside of him with stuffing. Drippings were swimming on the top, and I spooned them over him three or four times during the last hour or so. Everybody got here by 1:30, and my David and Brittney swung into action, removed the stuffing to a big bowl, and "carved" the bird onto two platters, one for light, one for dark. It's hard to really carve a turkey that's just literally falling apart. Mostly they used tongs to pull the meat away from the bones in serving-size pieces. Soooo tender and moist! Everyone else arrived - Jerry and Eloise, and Brittney's sister and her family, and later my brother and SIL, and everyone brought something. Added to the fruit salad and cranberries I had made, and the bird, we had enough food for an army. We watched the Cowboy game (pitiful), and hit the leftovers afterward, but there was still so much left. Everyone helped with the preliminary cleanup, but Dave and Brittney stayed and helped me put the food away - always a big chore. Those two are so helpful, and so are the boys, Landry and Hudson. They work like adults, those kids.
Then David got my Christmas tree and set it up in the living room, and wonder of wonders, all the lights work and all I have to do is decorate it. They'd better have worked, since we just picked it up after having it restrung, and they do. Sure looks different. The LEDs give a different light than my old incandescents, but they're pretty, very soft and subtle, and I'll get used to the difference. Theoretically, they'll work for several years, and there is just one (1) plug to connect. I had twelve before, each with at least two strings on it. I now have 14 strings, all connected end-to-end. The guy who strung it did it so there is a connection at each of the two breaks where the tree comes apart, so it can be stored easily. I'm really looking forward to a Christmas season where I don't have to fight the lights.
Boo, good news about your friend. Praying that things continue to go well for her. PH, praying also for your BIL, that the chemo will continue to do what it's supposed to do. You asked about the steroids. I can't give you a very precise answer, because I never worked much in oncology, except on a temporary basis now and then when I was a house "float nurse." However, I believe it's given for several reasons. I know one of them is that certain cancers have an inflammatory process as part of their development and activity, and a steroid would help to suppress that. Another is that patients taking chemo frequently experience a lot of nausea and poor appetite, and steroids can help with that. Also, certain cancers, like leukemia and lymphoma, involve an over-active immune response in the body, and the steroids will suppress that. Those are pretty simplistic answers, and actually, that's about all I know about it.
Well, I'm going to put my weary old body in the bed and sleep until I'm ready to get up in the morning. I have absolutely nothing to do except what I want to do tomorrow. Age has its compensations. Blessings! --Romeena

I could out shoot guys with 12 gages. It had just the right choak. Well, I got my house lights out of the storage boxes today.
As you may have guessed, I still use the incandescent C-9 types. But here's what I dont get,
when I put them away in January, all the bulbs were working, but when I took them out today, about 5 on each string were out, even after tightening. Strange. Maybe its those 118 degree days in the shed all summer! ha

MDC, considering that common tungsten filaments used in older incandescent bulbs heat up to over 1000 degrees Fahrenheit, I don't think those 118 degree days in storage is your problem. Tungsten was chosen for filaments because it can heat up to very high temperatures without evaporating as long as the vacuum of the bulb remains intact. And high temperatures are required to cause a solid to generate heat, which emits light from the glow. Unfortunately, those filaments are not thick straight wires. They are very thin wires that are triple coiled to expose as much wire surface as possible. Combine the thinning of the wire and the natural brittleness that is a trait of tungsten, that makes incandescent bulbs somewhat fragile. I suspect that as you packed them away or when you strung them out, you may not have been gentle enough and caused a few filaments to break from shock.

Good morning, porch! No, my outside lights aren't up yet. David is hoping to get them done today or tomorrow, but he might not be able to do it. He's been helping Jerry with a/c repairs. I don't put any pressure on him. He knows they need to go up, he knows how to do it so well, and he'll get to it when he can. Besides, I've got enough on my own plate, getting the tree decorated. I was so tired yesterday, I was just useless, and mostly sat and gazed at the tree, with nothing on it but those beautiful lights. Folks, I really like the LEDs. The ones I chose are really pretty. They're bright, but the colors are pastel-y and soft, and the whole effect is beautiful. I can't wait to get the ornaments on it, it's going to be so pretty. I'll put a picture on Facebook when it's finished.
We need to put out a big APB, for all our missing porchsters. I hope everyone will at least come home for Christmas. There are so many we haven't seen for so very long. Some just dropped out of sight, suddenly and permanently. Makes you wonder if something happened to them, and I hate that thought. I think of Mary Wiggins, Bulbsnatcher, Mrs. Wiley, Merrie Weather, Rafe Hollister, Salty Dog, and so many others. Then, of course, there's our dear REV. I can't think of him without tears coming to my eyes. I miss his sweet benedictions at the close of a day. I wonder how his dear wife and daughter are doing? You know, some things we just aren't allowed to understand on this earth, but I surely do have some questions for the Lord when I get to heaven. Most of them begin with "Why?" Great words of wisdom Romeena. As a child is unable to see life like a parent, we are unable to see things as our Father does. That is where faith enters in to the equation.
Not a lot of turkey left overs here GF. Because my SIL also did prime rib, we didn't get to big of a bird. So there was enough for a couple of meals later. Just about right for me.
Romeena, I'm glad you like those LED bulbs. Because I think they will be the way the world goes for the next few years. Until the next better light source is developed. I am finding in my work that I am switching over more and more to LED's. Although pricey, thus far they have lived up to their billing as fairly trouble free and small energy consumption.
Guess I will go get ready for Preachin'.

Good afternoon, porch. Beautiful day here! It's 78° right now, will probably make it to 80°. It won't last too long, though. Winter has tapped us with his cold paw already, and will soon return, to stay. My yard is awash in leaves. Eddie will probably turn and run when he gets here on Wednesday or Thursday. I may have to tuck a little extra in his pay, because those leaves are going to take hours to clean up. I try to tell him not to be so meticulous about it. Just rake or blow away the excess, and mulch/mow the remainder. It's good for the grass. He'll do that, but then he tries to get every single visible leaf, either raked or mowed. Meantime, they're still falling! He just prides himself on doing a thorough job.
I agree, Asa, I think we're heading for an LED world, at least for a while. Seems we've sort of skipped over the CFLs, and that pleases me greatly. I absolutely hate those things, with their slow start-up, and that sickly gray/green light they give. The LEDs are pricey, for sure, but the savings on the electric bill will soon balance it out. My Christmas tree is now all LED, and most of the little "focus" lights in Christmas stuff around the house will be LEDs. I have several strings in white or colors that will be used that way. I ordered them as samples to decide what I wanted to use on the tree, and will put them to use in other ways. My Nativity is always displayed on a bed of white fluff, with lights underneath. LEDs will be perfect for that because I don't have to worry about them heating up. I've ordered a case of outdoor twinkles, which will probably be enough to do the back yard. Next year, I'll get enough for the front. Then there are the roof lights and icicles. I'll have to consult with David on that, because those lights are his department, but we'll change to LEDs, I'm sure. I think he's doing the same with his house. I usually see about a $40-$50/month uptick in my electric bill at Christmas, so at that rate, it won't take too long to even it out.
The lights are a little brighter than incandescents, but I'm getting used to them. At church, our choir loft is surrounded by green Christmas trees, eight of them, each about six feet tall, and relatively slender. They're strung with white LEDs, and there are spotlights on each one that washes it with a color - red, green, blue, purple, and a pure white. The light guy can change the colors and the effect is just beautiful. When he puts the blue on them, it looks like the trees are standing in moonlight. The LEDs give the whole thing an icy effect, and it really is pretty.
I guess time will tell, regarding how durable the things are, but last night, it was a pure pleasure to just drag out the ornaments and start decorating. No dark lights, no removing and replacing string after string, and after burning for at least eight hours, each bulb was perfectly cool. Also, no tangle of plug-ins at the bottom of the tree. One plug, connected to a standard extension cord, which is plugged into a little device that lets me push a button and control the lights without even getting out of my chair. Amazing.
Well, back to the tree. It's almost finished. I've got a home health visit to make, will get that done, and then David and the boys will be here to get my outside lights up. I'll work on the tree in little fits and starts but tonight for sure, I'll finish it. Then I have the next few days to do all the little scenes and stuff around the house. I love this time of year!!! Speaking of football, Ohio State lost it's second QB for the season, and the Big 10 championship game is next week...Might win.....Might NOT!

Pardon me! You're so right, Asa. Would you believe, I once saw a woman in a restaurant, who sent a beautiful slice of prime rib back to the kitchen, with the request that it be made "very well done." I wanted to tell her that Burger Doodle was right down the street, and a darned sight cheaper! I guess I'm blessed, because I prefer my beef rare. I've noticed that people who like it rare can still eat it if it's well done (won't enjoy it as much, but can still eat it), whereas people who like it well done absolutely will not touch it if there's any pink showing. Poor things. My Dale preferred it well done, until he met me and lived in Texas a while. We taught him how to eat steak! Within a few years, he was ordering his rare, too. My dad once said he had seen a cow get well that was hurt worse than my steak was. He also said a little penicillin and a couple of days rest, and we could save mine and send it back to the herd. He was a caution, my dad. Incidentally, he's the one who taught me to like rare beef, so he really had no room to talk.
Well, David and Landry came by to put up my roof lights. Landry (age 13) actually got on the roof and did those lights, and did an excellent job. He's such a perfectionist. David struggled for a while with the icicles, but they were just giving him so much trouble. I finally told him we'd trash them and I got on the computer and ordered some LED icicles. They'll be here Wednesday, Dave will be back in town by Thursday, and this weekend I'll fry him some pork chops and make noodles and gravy, and he'll put up the lights. What a deal! I'm hoping these LEDs will live up to their reputation. I can't tell you what a joy it was to decorate my tree this year, and not have strings of lights just suddenly burning out before my eyes, while I'm hanging ornaments! If these start going out now, I'm going to be very disappointed, but I don't think that's going to happen.
Well, I'm hungry. It just occurred to me that I have eaten nothing - nada - all day. Maybe that's why my stomach is growling, ya think? Wish I had some prime rib, but I don't. Guess I'll settle for some leftover turkey. It's time to eat it or freeze it, I guess. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving weekend! Mine was pretty decent. On Wed. and Friday Kai and I helped put up(and put toegether) the trees for the church. I am trying to get her involved in more things so she will be less self-involved. Just have to find those things; Preferably with other teenagers that she can hang around with. So far it has been pretty limited in that department. The two homeschool group field trips we went on so far didn't really have kids her age there.
As far as LED's, I think I mentioned I am slowly replacing the incandescent light bulbs in the house with LED's. I have a lot of the main ones switched(I.E. the lights that are on the longest) already. I told the power company this and they said the LED's won't have that much impact in lowering my bill. I guess they have to tell me that since they wouldn't want us using less electricity or anything.
Well, better hit the hay. Sleep well porchsters, and have a great day tomorrow!

MDC, A lot of upsets yesterday for sure. Going in to the 4th qtr of the season and this is where it really gets interesting. Injuries, stamina, and endurance all come into play in December. Green Bay sure is looking tough after beating the Pats yesterday. Should be an interesting month for sure.
Well back to work after a 4 day weekend that went by way to fast. Sure has been nice weather though. December 1st and we will be 50 this afternoon. Can't beat a deal like that.

Yep, It turned out well if I don't say so myself. I have a Drive-In Movie speaker I'm making into a radio for the room too, ya know the kind you used to hang on your window. For when I want to listen to the radio, I have to make a stand for it to hang on.

Got to get all the grey hairs on my head mowed today. By the way, anyone had any experience with "FOSAMAX"? I started it today, always leary of any new medications.

Good morning, porch! Boy, this Texas weather! Yesterday it hit 81° here at my house, and with the sun beating down on my big window and sunroom windows, I finally had to turn on the a/c for a while. This morning, it's 36° outside, and pretty darned chilly in here, too! Guess I'd better switch back over to the furnace. By the weekend, we'll be back in the 70s, and I'll be changing it again, I guess. I want a thermostat that makes the decision for me, and just runs whatever is needed to keep the house at a set temperature. My car can do it, why can't the house?
I slept like a rock last night! Sure felt good. Got the mizry in my back this morning, though, and I'm not finished with the Christmas tree yet. It's nothing I can't put up with - just tired, strained, cramped muscles from too much reaching and stretching and being on my feet too long at a time, working on the tree. I never have that blinding, crushing pain that I had before the surgery. That - I couldn't handle. This, I can. I take so little pain medication, that usually one Tylenol tablet will give me enough relief to make it tolerable and get me through a day. I buy the 50-tablet bottles of Tylenol, and usually have to throw most of them away, because they reach their expiry date.
I've got a home health visit to make this morning, and that will help too. It's weird, but there's something about driving my car that often helps my back a lot. Something in the pitch of the seat, or whatever, I don't know, but it often eases these cramped muscles out. My magic car.

As for Fosamax, I've never taken it, and probably won't because I have a couple of conditions that preclude it. However, here's a link to a pretty good site that explains it: http://www.drugs.com/fosamax.html. I have osteopenia (bones less dense than they should be) which is no surprise at my age, but it hasn't reached osteoporosis yet (bones so thin there is risk of fractures). It's been stable for about ten years, doesn't get any worse, so I manage it by just eating a lot of dairy products and leafy greens. Seems to work for me.

Luther, I watched it! I knew the Patriots would be tough to beat, but the Packers pulled it out, luckily. The defense played alot better than last week's game against the Vikings. Even though they won that one as well, I thought it was a real nail-biter. Packer defense played as though they were 5 touchdowns ahead or something, IMO. This time they at least tried. They had to.
Btw Luther Heggs, I finally found out where your porch name came from after seeing The Ghost And Mr. Chicken a couple weeks ago on Svengoolie. Funny that Don Knotts was wearing the same suit and hat he wore on TAGS in that movie.

Are you aware that Rich Koz has been doing Svengoolie continuously for about 35 years? He started out as Son of Svengoolie before the original Svengoolie gave him permission to drop the "Son of". And I believe Koz writes all of his own material including the short sketches and songs he performs before and after commercial breaks. Now that is talent. He also used to host a Three Stooges show dressed as himself. Do you know if that is still airing?

And yeah, I read up on Rich Koz when I found Svengoolie a year or so ago. He is a pretty talented fellow doing all that. I still love his skit where he mimicked just about every member of the Robertson clan(Duck Dynasty dudes), and he impersonated them to perfection. Maybe not so much the voices, even though they were very good, but their mannerisms were perfect.
I haven't heard anything about his hosting a Three Stooges show though, sorry.
Luther, Svengoolie is shown on MeTV on Saturdays at 9pm central time. If you don't get MeTV, you should write to whomever you get your tv channels from and request it. They have a lot of good classic shows on, and none of the vulgar junk or endless commercials that TVLand has. And MeTV has really funny promos.

MDC, the city of Calgary, in the province of Alberta, is well known for an annual, ten day, outdoor show that celebrates their western heritage. It is called the Calgary Stampede because of the cowboys, cowgirls, horses and cattle that are involved. So it makes sense that their CFL football team is called the Calgary Stampeders.
