October 29, 2014 - Msg 99553: Hey there, Asa. It was 90 degrees here yesterday and you know Im sick to death of it! Anyway, as far as the stew goes, some people don't brown it but it makes a difference. You can fix it in the crock pot, though, but the way I have done it in the past is to grab the skillet and heat it up, brown the stew meat real good and then put it in the crock pot. It works out fine and the meat is real tender if you cook it slow all day.

Very sorry to hear of your sister-in-law's passing TOM. So sad.

Today has been a good day. Sean and I met with a friend for lunch in town and did a little shopping. Tomorrow will be chore day around here and I will be catching up the laundry.

Have any of you been watching TAGS on MeTV? I have been enjoying it but finding some small parts missing to make room for commercials, I guess. Oh well, still not as bad as TVLand.

Better get off and get ready for bed.

October 30, 2014 - Msg 99555: Thanks, Asa. Very kind words. I had the good fortune to be born to parents who had a very positive outlook on life, and had an unfailing belief that God was in control and all would be well, if He was allowed to lead. They passed that on to me, and it has always proven to be true. They also had a highly developed sense of humor, especially my dad. He could find something to laugh at in any situation, and he never, ever took himself too seriously. Even when Alzheimer's was steadily robbing him of his memory and cognitive abilities, his humor would still come through. I'll always be grateful for that.

About the stew - Boo is right about the meat. No, it's not absolutely necessary to brown it first, but it does give a certain richness to the flavor of it, and you do want to brown it in a skillet. Things don't brown very well in the crock pot, they just sort of steam. However, to actually cook the stew, the whole thing will do very nicely in a crock pot. The only tricky part is the timing of adding the veggies. I usually put one onion in along with the meat at first. It will sort of disappear into the broth when added that early, but adds flavor. Add a can of beef broth, and enough water to keep the meat barely covered in the crock pot. Don't add anything else until the meat is getting pretty tender. If you add the veggies too soon, they'll get mushy before the meat is done, and you want it to be very tender so it will probably need to cook most of the day in a crock pot. When you start adding the veggies, put the firmer ones, like carrots, in first and let them cook a while. The softer things, like cabbage and onions or any greens you're using, would go in last, so they don't just go to mush and disappear. If you use snow peas, they would go in about the last fifteen minutes or so. They should still be a bit crisp. Oh, and a can or two of tomatoes along the way gives a nice richness to the broth. Adding potatoes will thicken the broth somewhat (depending on the taters - some are more starchy than others) and you'll end up with more of a stew than soup, a very hearty and nourishing dish, for sure. I have no doubt you can do this. Season to taste, of course, with salt and pepper. Mine gets a generous dash of Tabasco, but that's just me.

Our temps have been quite moderate - 60s at night, mid-80s in the daytime. Sure is nice. I just love this time of year. One thing I do miss - you never smell burning leaves anymore. Cities have ordinances against burning them, and they should, but I remember when I was a child, everyone raked their leaves up and burned them. Most people raked them into a pile just off the curb, in the street, and burned them there. They stood guard, kept a garden hose handy, and usually wet down the grass in the strip between the curb and sidewalk. You never burned leaves on a windy day, and if you did it frequently, the pile wasn't too big. Those leaves would burn quickly, then you'd squirt the ashes with the water hose, and that was that. Sure smelled nice, like Autumn! Of course, that was before the days of a mulching mower. Now we can't burn them, but wouldn't if we could, because the mower chops them almost to powder, and they remain on the lawn, for the best fertilizer you can get! Things have a way of changing, don't they?

Well, I'm off to bed. Our group from church is going over to Ft. Worth tomorrow, to visit the US Mint there, and watch them print money! Should be fun, and interesting. Then tomorrow evening, Robbi and Richard are coming in, to be here for the weekend. Richard's brother is getting married Saturday night.

Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

Thanks for the cooking lesson Boo and Ro. I made a stew a couple of years ago and even I was surprised at how good it came out. It seems to me I added a little worstershire to it and that really gave it a deeper flavor that I liked. And I can see how putting the veggies in at the right time is important. It's supposed to get right cold here on Sunday. So I just might fix me up a pot on Saturday and see how it turns out. By golly, y'all talked me right into it. Thanks you two. :)

Boo, I pray Sean is doing ok. And that Bruce had a good birthday. I hope his cake didn't say Happy "58" though. lol

Well it sounds like it was a dandy World Series MDC. I hate to say it, but I didn't see any of it. Not on purpose, but I just didn't even think about it much. I see your Cards have a big game this weekend with Dallas. I think you guys have one of the top coaches in the league. He has done very well where ever he has been.

Well I may try some homemade chili sometime this next month also. So I'm up for any help on doing that as well. Just be mindful that I am not into the "firehouse hot" kind of chili's. I prefer them mild and meaty. Any thoughts?

Well better get. I have a staff meeting in Salt Lake this morning. Talk about a fun day. But my work partner and I always find a place to stop for lunch on the way home.

Prayers for all.

October 30, 2014 - Msg 99559: Hahaha! I get it, MDC, but the short answer is "probably no one." Texas managed to hold onto our voter ID law, at least for now. The appellate court let us keep it for this election, something about it being "too confusing" to try to change it this close to Nov. 2. I can see how that could be confusing. Let's see: You need a picture ID. You don't need a picture ID. Yep, that's a tough one. Almost as tough as "you should be able to prove who you are before you can vote." However, I'm grateful for it, and sincerely hope it will hold up in the higher appeals that have already been filed, and that it will be allowed to stand, once and for all. I declare, that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. Just let anyone and everyone walk in and vote, just on their statement that their name is John Smith, or Jose Rodriguez, or Achmed al-Balaki. The left claims it's a "burden" on some people, to obtain a picture ID. I'll bet if a picture ID was required to get government assistance of any kind, or to buy pot in Colorado, it wouldn't be considered a "burden." OK, soap box back in the garage. Anyway, for this election, we should have a minimum of fraud.

Gotta get busy. I have to pick Eloise up in about an hour, to get to the church early enough to get a seat on the bus that isn't over the rear wheels or next to the restroom. It really doesn't matter, this is a short trip, but Eloise gets motion sick easily, and where she sits makes a difference. I don't get sick easily, thank goodness. I've never been airsick, or seasick for that matter, but I have gotten carsick if I try to read in the car. Can't do that. OK, off I go. Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

I start mine off with putting the meat in then add water to emulsify it and work it with my fingers, it breaks down the meat to a smoother texture. I buy the beans that say "chili ready" they are already seasoned, the same goes for the diced tomatoes they have chili ready ones too. I just add a good size onion, chili powder and cumin powder to taste. That's how my chili rolls...

The News stations in Cleveland have been showing how the town has gone "NUTS" over the return of LeBron James the Cavilers, they have their home opener tonight, they say tickets are going from $800-$6,000 bucks! October 31, 2014 - Msg 99578: Good morning, porch! All this talk of chili is making me think it's about time to simmer up a pot of it. I love chili, and I make a decent version of it. Asa, you asked about using different kinds of meat in it. Here in Texas, any store with a decent meat department will sell you "chili grind" beef. Usually, it's packaged and in the meat counter, but occasionally it's not. In that case, you just ask the butcher, and he'll grind it for you. It's just ground beef, but the grinder blades are very coarse, resulting in meat that's almost chunky. It's not all mooshed together like hamburger, it's in easily-separated chunks, about the size of a grape. Some of us add a little regular hamburger as well, for a little back-up consistency, but those meaty chunks are so good. G-F, I must respectfully differ with you on one point - turkey is okay, but it doesn't have the hearty richness that beef provides. In fact, I like turkey to be turkey, I don't like it when it tries to masquerade as something else. Turkey bacon is awful, and a "turkey burger" should be ashamed of itself. I love turkey, but I want it sitting in a roaster pan, all golden brown and juicy, and surrounded by steaming, succulent stuffing. That's just my opinion, of course, and certainly if someone serves me turkey masquerading as beef, I'll eat it, and probably enjoy it, but given my choice, I'll just play it straight. No imposters.

You pumpkin carver guys are amazing! I can only imagine how it would turn out if I tried that. I'd end up with a pumpkin that looked like some kind of mutant, and might lose a digit or two in the process. I never could even carve a simple jack-o-lantern that looked right.

Well, better get moving around here. Robbi and Richard are here, will be leaving around four to go to the actual dress rehearsal for Richard's brother's wedding. They'll be back here around eight, bringing Richard's daughter and her two little girls with them, to stay here tonight. That should be fun, having two little ones on Halloween. I've got candy and such for them to hand out at the door, and Robbi and Jordan will probably let them go trick-or-treat a little bit, too. They're two and five, I think. Fun ages.

Have a happy and safe Halloween, downplay the witchy part, have fun with the rest of it. Blessings! --Romeena

October 31, 2014 - Msg 99580: Good timing Dr. Breen that's funny, Romeena, I agree with your turkey discussion, I have used turkey meat in other dishes, I try to use (some) turkey when I get into the "trying to eat right" mode and drop a few pounds. Now a turkey burger is not so bad if you season them and put some onions, green peppers and I add some liquid smoke to the mix. Not to bad, but I KNOW you know the story about putting lipstick on a pig... ;)haha!

October 31, 2014 - Msg 99581: Asa, Bruce like me to make venison chili, but we seldom have ground deer. It is his favorite, by far but I don't like it. He also likes his chili mild, so for years I make two kinds of chili. I make him the mild, using Caroll Selby's chili seasoning. I like my chili more tomato-y with plenty of chili pepper and spicy. I have used Wick Fowler's chili seasoning before and liked it a lot. For me the key is to slow cook it for awhile on the stovetop. Also, if I am using it for Frito pie, I like to add a couple of cans of store bought chili to thicken it up. Nobody seems to notice and my family always compliments it when I do that.

Well, I am making a kid-friendly menu for Halloween dinner tonight. I made up a batch of baked beans and are making their favorite bbq cups. Simple recipe and versatile. I just brown up some ground beef and add some sloppy joe mix (I add a little brown sugar to it). Then you spray your muffin tins with nonstick spray and grab a can of jumbo flaky style biscuits. Separate the biscuits into to halves and press each half into a muffin tin to form a cup. But in a couple tablespoons of the meat mixture, top with grated cheddar or whatever cheese you choose, then bake at 350 for 10 minutes or so.

We had a weak front come through today and it cooled us off to the low 80s and much lower humidity, which is wonderful.. just might put a fire in the fire pit tonight.

Amen Asa?....That's no reason to censor him..haha (I realize Floyd put censors on key words to prevent pop-up Ad stuff) is what I understand...

November 02, 2014 - Msg 99606:
G-F, when the censor page appears, the offensive word will appear as dark green text while the non-offensive words will appear as black text. Sometimes the entire word may not be offensive, but a shorter word embedded in it is offensive. I know that at one time, "specialist" would activate the censor because if you remove the "spe" and "t", the remaining letters spell an offensive word that triggers the censor. I pointed this out to Floyd and it appears he fixed it so that now "specialist" is allowed.

November 02, 2014 - Msg 99608: Amen GF. I was once told by a company big wig that our m@intenance dept. was a necessary evil. Boy howdy if that don't make you feel warm and fuzzy. That comment reflected on how we were treated and funded though. And I was glad when I left that job. I don't expect to honored or hailed, but a simple appreciation for doing the best you can in often trying moments is appreciated. The organization I am with now for the most part understands our worth, although I still run into some individuals who don't. Oh well, they don't sign my paycheck, so they can pound sand as far as I am concerned. lol

BIG AMEN Asa, Funny tho, who do the big shots call when the A/C, heat, lights, or the drains back up?
I think they call the I.T. Dept. so they can "Google" the problem...lol..lol I learned many, many years ago that this job has mostly "self" gratification. But I do have to admit the (some)residents I served really did appreciate having their heat fixed or drains unclogged in the middle of the night, holidays & week-ends. Our jobs are not 9-5. November 03, 2014 - Msg 99620: I guess it doesn't like *** guys. MDC, I think they are hiring next week in Phoenix for extra security. Prayers for Mrs. Asa, I know how hard it can be for them sometimes when the exacerbations flare up. Mrs. G-F has not had one for quite awhile because she takes injections 3x a week for it. MS is like a silent thief that takes from you a little bit at a time.. Prayers for you both! Suppose to be in the 60's today so will get out and do some yard work and give my drywall a rest for today, my neck can use a break. G-F..

November 03, 2014 - Msg 99621: Good Monday morning all.

Thanks for the prayers for my Mrs. They are much appreciated and felt. G.F. My wife has other health issues that prevents her from being able to take anything for the M.S. unfortunately. So it has free reign on her. It stinks, but we deal with it. I know everyone has something they are dealing with. All part of life, right? You still got leaves to collect? Mine are mostly done with the exception of 4 quacking aspen tree's. They hold on to the very end. It's always a race to see if they will drop and I can get them gathered up before it snows. I try to have everything picked up before then.

MDC, Your Cards made me proud yesterday. They are sitting pretty atop the NFC west right now.

Brought me a bowl of my stew to work for lunch today. Cold day here, so it will sit real well.

G.F. I am doing some plumbing today. Dealing with some 3/4 inch copper. I usually solder copper, but I have to turn the water off to an entire building to do this work, and I don't have the time to try and get things drained off and dry enough to be able to solder. So I'm going with some compression fittings. I thought about "sharkbites". I have used them before, and never had a failed one yet, but I still don't trust them. They seem to easy I reckon. lol Have you ever used them? Any failures if you have? Just curious.

Well I guess I better quit playing David Browne and stop talking about working and actually go do something. Where is Andy when I need him? I think I have some lumbago in my back this morning.

Possum, did you get your Mom all situated? Hope so.

Prayers for all.

Yes, Asa,she's pretty much settled in and seems to like being there at the Assisted Living home. Lots of people over there know her due to her having been the local school nurse for over 30 years. She's sort of a mini-celebrity over there-ha! And today is her birthday-83!

Happy birthday Mama Possum (if I called her that to her face, she'd probably hit me with a leg o' lamb!)

Y'all have a good day-love to all!

Hope everyone is ready for their day and the week ahead.

Lunch menu will be: grilled cheese sandwiches, beef stew. brownies for dessert. tea or lemonade to drink.

MDC, since you are using Google Chrome, here is how you use VIEW SOURCE to help you post an image here:
#1 - With the particular Front Porch page active, right click anywhere on the page. If the item you will be searching for is not on the current page, then you will have to search each page in the archives.
#2 - In the menu that appears, left click on VIEW PAGE SOURCE.
#3 - A Page Source window will appear displaying all the HTML codes for that entire page.
#4 - Press CTRL + F to invoke the FIND function.
#5 - A small rectangle box will appear in the upper right corner. Type "Msg 99585" without the quotes in that box.
#6 - Press enter and the Page Source window will find that message number and my post associated with that number.
#7 - Examine line 3 of my post and you will see multiple HTML commands in that line. Each command is enclosed with <>. Look for the command that begins with IMG. That is the command that posts the image in my message. The URL link to that RIMSHAW image appears in between the quotation marks that follow the SRC=. You can insert any link there. To change it, find an image on the internet. Right click on that image, and then left click on COPY IMAGE URL. Then select everything in between the two quotation marks and paste the new link there.
I hope you can follow these instructions. Otherwise, just ask.

TOM, if the weather is not cold enough for you, I can send you some Canadian weather.

Big Maude, I sure do love grilled cheese sandwiches. Can I trade my brownie for a second grilled cheese sandwich? And the beef stew should be great for dipping.

Been keeping busy but think of all of you often and wonder what you are up to. The weather here has been pleasant, with highs in the 80s but cool in the evenings. We have been enjoying it but wish it was cooler during the day.

I am already starting to plan for Thanksgiving, it just alittle more than three weeks away already. Wonder how its going to be this year with Mom gone and Susan's boy Matthew divorcing his wife. Might now be so cheerful but we can still be thankful for many things and just enjoy being together.

Any of you have any special plans for Thanksgiving this year? How many of you are doing the cooking?

Boo

November 03, 2014 - Msg 99629: Good evening all.
Thanks for the prayers PH. They are appreciated.

Boo, so good to see you. I am sure your Holidays this year will be a bit difficult, but still good.
As far as us, I imagine we will be going to Stacey's house. She always puts on a big feast and always invites us. Then of course Matt and I always play for the world championship in 9 ball on his pool table. All in all it's a wonderful day. We finish it off by turning on the Christmas lights on the outside of the house and then watching Home Alone. It's become our tradition and even the older Grandkids love it.

P.H. I think one of my favorite Barney quotes is "I just don't happen to like my main dish concealed in a heavy sauce". But I also like his comment "she only gives you two wings, and from a chicken that's done a lot of flying". Funny stuff.

Well with the time change in play I sure do fight the urge to roll into bed and hour early. But resist I must.

Prayers for Tom and for all.

ASA--do you have one of those "Cyclone Rakes" that I see advertised by any chance?
Speaking of advertisements, I will be SO glad when
the political ads are finally done tomorrow!
They are so cut throat here that both parties make me sick!
ASA--I used to have one of those greenish Aladdin thermos that I would put hot soup in when I was teaching. More for my "voice and larnyx" than anything else. 9 ball eh? I consider myself a pretty good 8 ball player. CARDS really want to play in the superbowl--and on their home field no less. Prayers continue for mrs. asa.
G-F--Yup, I bet the pit security is doubled here. ha
I've mentioned in the past about working concessions at PIR a few times, but nothing this year.
MAUdie-good to see you finally got my APB! ha
I also love a good grilled cheese sammich!
BOO--you certainly never have a dull moment with your
family and relatives! ha Hope you dont overwork yourself this year!
PH--thanks for the info. I DO know how to use my "snipping tool", so I did that and will try a pic.
Prayers,

November 04, 2014 - Msg 99632: Good morning, porch! What a beautiful day we have here in Dallas today! It's been raining all morning, in little intermittent squalls, the sky looks like lead so there will probably be more, and I'm lovin' it! As dry as we have been, there's nothing more beautiful right now than rain. God is good.

Thanksgiving is coming! I've already started squirreling away certain things that tend to sell out at the grocery store. I make a really good "ambrosia" fruit salad, with mandarin oranges, pineapple chunks and tidbits, maraschino cherries, and coconut. The dressing is a blend of two parts sour cream and one part Cool Whip. My son loves it, and I always hide a bowl of it in the fridge for him to take home. Personally, I'd like to have some chopped pecans in it, but the majority of my family prefer it without the nuts, so I leave them out. Anyway, the stores generally sell out of the mandarin oranges, so I'm stockpiling them now.

Today's the big day! If you haven't voted already, be sure to do so. Voting is still one of our most cherished rights and freedoms. It has been corrupted, there's fraud and manipulation, I know, but we still need to vote. It's about the only voice we have left, so please use it.

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Good news concerning Sean. He did his college entrance exam yesterday and came home defeated, thinking he had really done badly because it was hard. We had an appointment today with the head of admissions and she went over his test scores with him and as it turns out, he did well on all but the math. The woman we talked to said he did real well, especially on the essay part of the exam and that he scored at college level. So, we have to make an appointment with an advisor over the auto mechanics program and sign him up. All is good to go so far. Thank you for your prayers!
