Congratulations to those who enjoyed Thanksgiving. As for me, it was miserable. I was planning on visiting family in the USA and having dinner with them. But a week before departure, I had some blood work done that indicated a high white blood cell count. It turns out a wound that I was treating by myself got infected. So I had to go to the hospital for some intravenous antibiotics. Follow up treatment now includes frequent visits with nurses. So I had to cancel my travel plans. The only bright spot about all this is that I never had to pay anything even though I don't have private insur@nce.

And a welcome to li'l Rallo Tubbs. I hope you will enjoy reading and posting here. If you don't mind, can you tell us a little about yourself? Nothing specific, just general information such as how you found us and your general location.
I have been posting here off and on since 1997. I was born and raised in the USA (near Chicago) but currently live in Canada (Greater Toronto Area).

Would you believe that even though Canada celebrates their Thanksgiving in October, many Canadian stores are taking advantage of the Black Friday in the USA by having their own sales? I guess they don't want us Canadians crossing the border with our cash and credit cards.

Well, I had a lovely Thanksgiving with Eloise's family yesterday, and tomorrow is my turn. I'll be serving a complete Thanksgiving meal, pretty much to the same people, but it doesn't matter. I've also invited my next-door neighbor, but am not sure she can come. Today I cooked my cranberry sauce, made the ambrosia/fruit salad, and baked a cherry pie and two pumpkin pies. In the morning, I'll get the celery and onions sauteed in butter for the dressing, then will make the dressing just before I stuff the turkey with it. I want it very hot when it goes in the bird, so everything will cook thoroughly in the oven. Most of the dressing goes around the bird, but I do put some inside as well. If I can have the bird in the oven by 10:30, it will come out around 1:30 or 2:00, and can "rest" for a half hour or so before we carve it. It loses less juice that way. The sides are all easy, no problem. It's really a very easy meal, all things considered, and I love to do it. The bird is almost 19 lbs, and there are three extra thighs to cook buried in the dressing, so there will be plenty of dark meat. Lots of leftovers - that's my plan! I'll send some home with Dave and Brittney, and will enjoy the rest next week.

Well, I'm off to bed in a short while. I'll need plenty of rest tonight, if my weak old back is to hold up for the day. Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

Been a long day but a good one. I did not housework besides unloading the dishwasher with help. :) Ate leftovers and they were even better today. Bruce and I went on a covert (did I spell that right?) mission to drive to San Antonio to pick up a go-cart for Erin for Christmas. He is in the process of using the tractor to make a track on the back part of our place. She wont be able to go too fast in this sand but she will have fun. The thing has good roll bars and seat belts and she will have to wear a helmet, of course. She is going to love it.

Hope you have a great time with your family tomorrow, Ro. Can you believe we had three turkeys...two 20 lbs ones and a smaller fried turkey yesterday and it was nearly all gone by the end of the day?! Crazy eaters around here. ;)

I wasn't always like that. I used to have a rule of no Christmas talk until after thanksgiving. But as I have gotten older my thinking has changed considerably. Thanks to everyone for all the well wishes. And I'm glad you enjoyed the photo of my nurses. Until my wound heals, I'm not supposed to get it wet. So that means no baths or showers. Instead, my nurses want to give me sponge baths. But for some reason (look at photo again), I prefer to do it myself.

MrSawyer, after working about 30 years in Chicago, I took an early retirement when I no longer enjoyed what I was doing. Then I met a Canadian lady and we got married. She did not want to live in the USA and I didn't care where I lived. So I applied for Canadian permanent residency and now live with her in Canada. In a few more years, I will be eligible to become a dual citizen (USA and Canada). This is strange because I hate snow and hockey.

As for the mayor of Toronto, the city council has stripped him of most of his authority because he will not resign nor take a leave of absence. He is basically a mayor in name only. And he still is expected to run for re-election next year. In the meantime, the deputy mayor seems to be running things.

I had a chance to get some rest yesterday and today so I am doing ok now. I got so tired, though. Seeing everyone come together and enjoy the meal and each other's company made it all worth while and then some. We are blessed!

Well, G-F, Bernie got in trouble today. I was getting him and the hens rounded up and back into the coop at the end of the day and I had the bread bag in hand. Once again, Bernie got impatient because I wasnt feeding him the bread fast enough, and he pecked me hard on the toe! I smacked him with the bread bag again. Little toot!

You will also be happy to know that I am not getting sucked into doing any parties or anything. I am not even helping out at the Christmas Fest at church next weekend...instead, I am taking the young woman I mentor to a Christmas concert in one of the old missions in Goliad on Saturday evening. It is something I enjoy so much! Also I am NOT hosting the deacon Christmas party for the first time in about several years. I passed the torch on to someone else and I am so happy I did. All I have to do on Friday night is show up with a white elephant gift and a smile. :) Tonight my mother-in-law phoned to ask me if I was going to attend the annual ladies christmas party at church and I told her "No, not this year". No, I'm not putting up my tree yet. Yesterday was a long day, lots of food and fun, but by the end of the evening, when David was planning to drag the tree out and get it set up in the living room for me, and I suggested maybe we could do that today or tomorrow, he didn't mind at all! I think he was pretty tired too. So he'll probably come by here in the morning and do it, and that will suit me fine. I just want to relax today, not get into all that stuff.

The turkey was sooo good, and I'm glad I cooked the extra thighs with it. There was one undisturbed thigh left, which means we would have been one short - not enough dark meat - if I hadn't cooked extra. I've been doing that for about three years now, and it really works out well. There was a good bit left over, white and dark, and quite a bit left of the sides, so I'll be eating well for the next few days. I love leftovers, especially holiday food! There's even a little bit of cherry pie and pumpkin pie left. Yum!

Boo, I'm glad you're throttling back a little this year. It takes a while to get all your strength back after a surgery like that, so just take it easy. Let others "share in the blessing" of doing the work for a change. You need the rest, and it will do the others good to pick up some of the load. You don't have to be Martha all the time. Sometimes it's good to be Mary.

PH, I hope the US will always maintain the friendly association we have with Canada. It's good for both countries, and being such close neighbors, it's inevitable that people will meet and associate with folks across the border, and it should always be a good thing. I think dual citizenship is great too, in that case. I can see dangers in granting dual citizenship with some countries, but with Canada, it's great!

Romeena, when it comes time for my citizenship swearing in ceremony, it will seem odd that I have to pledge allegiance to the Queen after living my life upholding the Constitution of the United States. And since the USA and Canada have not had any armed conflicts against each other since the War of 1812, I don't foresee anything similar in my lifetime. So I guess it is safe to bear allegiance to both countries.
And regarding professional hockey, helmets in the National Hockey League did not become mandatory until 1979. And as for goalies who have to stop hard rubber pucks travelling up to 100mph, facemasks are not mandatory, although they are highly recommended!

I started my Christmas decorations today. I brought home Elisa, Sean and his friend Josh after church and the boys brought down the boxes from the attic and put the white lights on my back porch. Elisa and I hung the lighted garlands and worked on my village. I worked at a slow pace and am not doing as much this year...just enough for Mom to enjoy it when she comes to stay in a couple of weeks.

I will get a tree sometime this coming week but wont decorate it until next Saturday.

Better go get my shower and hit the ironing board. Laundry to do tomorrow! I am so predictable, aren't I?

Well it looks like our beautiful fall like weather is about to come to an aprupt end here. Mid 50's today then a cold front moves in. They are saying highs by Thursday won't get above 28. Dang, I het the thoughts of it, but oh well, it is December. It sure has been a fantastic Fall this year. I am grateful for that.

December 02, 2013 - Msg 95634: Good morning, porch! It's beautiful here - a bit chilly at 45°, but will warm up. Then toward the end of the week we're supposed to be very cold, maybe with freezing rain. Sure is nice right now, though. The yard is in that casual, relaxed unkempt state I wrote about in my blog. I love it when it's like this. Crunchy leaves underfoot, still a lot of green leaves on the trees, the occasional brave little rose or other flower smiling at me when I walk by. Squirrels everywhere, burrowing through the leaves for an abandoned nut, squadrons of birds descending to search the leaves too. I wonder what they're finding? Something, evidently, because they're very diligent and rustle around out there for long periods. Grass seeds, maybe. Eddie lets it get a bit long and go to seed a couple of times before he mows, at this time of year. Those seeds will sprout in the spring, if the birds don't find them, and will help the lawn thicken up. Sometimes I overseed with fescue, which will stay green all winter, but I haven't done that in a while.

I think I'll get my big Christmas wreath out, the one that hangs above the fireplace, and re-make it this year. It looked a bit shabby last year, so I got some pretties to freshen it up. I think I'll just tear it completely down and start over. That's a good project for today. When I build a wreath, I don't use a hot glue gun. I don't like them, the glue usually gets brittle and turns loose later anyway. So, I have some spools of very thin, crafter's wire, and I just wire everything in place. That way, I can remove it easily when I want to. Also, once in place, the pretties don't fall out unless I remove them. Works for me.

Well, off I go. Ted may be coming by to fix a photosensor out back that's not working. The globe light beside the pond won't come on when it gets dark, so I think the sensor is shot. Ugh. Those things aren't cheap. I hope I'm wrong, and it's something Ted can just fix, but I doubt it.

I don't feed them in the summer but I do in the winter...but now, if they was bats...maybe bats fly south for the winter where they can get their skeeters is what I'm thinkin'.....

Sounds awfully messy, involves things I don't necessarily have around the house, such as lard, and I just don't see the point. You can buy suet blocks at any garden center or wildlife/pet supply, for about 99 cents. Darned if I'm going to melt down a bunch of lard, stir in expensive peanut butter, add birdseed, then pour it up in molds and freeze it, when I can buy all sorts of "flavors" for a buck, clean and neat, and done! Those guys out back will mow through a suet block in less than two days, whether I make it or buy it. Even the squirrels like it. They can't get their little noses into the suet cage very well, but their skinny little
paws fit just fine. I watched one chowing down one day. He would reach in and scratch up a little ball of suet, pull it out of the cage and eat it from his paws. Just about all of the birds seem to like it. Flickers and woodpeckers will hang around until it's gone. Blue jays like it too. I don't think bats would be interested. They like to snag their food on the fly, and anyway, they're mammals, not birds. However, if they wanted a nibble, they'd be welcome! Sometimes I like to see a bat!

They discussed Andy not being able to deliver a baby. It seems to me that Barney was the one WHO WAS NOT listening, or else he would know bats don't lay eggs and therefore you could not go crazy from bat eggs in your hair....

December 02, 2013 - Msg 95641: I'm back. Wreath is all done. Actually, I had just gotten the old one out, and laid out the new things I had bought for it, and decided not to tear it completely apart and start over, as I had planned. It just needed a bit of fluffing up, and a few things rearranged and some of the new bling added, and now it looks great. Took about thirty minutes, compared to a couple of hours if I had completely started over. I just love giving myself permission to change my mind. As for the rest of the things I had planned to put on it, I'll just tuck them into the branches of the tree and they'll be beautiful.

G-F, I always thought it was very kind of Thelma Lou not to point out Barney's misunderstanding about bats. Only he would think they would lay eggs - probably because they fly, he thought they were birds. Or something. Anyway, it was sweet of her not to laugh at him.

Well, Ted was here earlier and worked on that photosensor. He just went in the back yard and worked on it, I didn't even know he was here. Anyway, when it got dark, the thing still didn't turn the lights on. He fixed a loose wire, and thought that was the problem, but evidently it wasn't. He said he knew he should have taped it off to block the light, and see if it worked, but that loose wire was such a good explanation, that he didn't test it. So - he'll be back in a day or so. He'll get it fixed. He takes good care of me.

Well, I'm going to eat the last of the cherry pie, with a tad bit of whipped cream that's left. Little by little, I'm getting rid of the leftovers. Blessings! --Romeena
December 02, 2013 - Msg 95642: I love Amazon! My youngest grandson has a birthday on Friday, and a gift I had ordered for him will not be here in time for me to re-ship it to him by Friday. So, I'll just push that gift forward and send it for Christmas. I called my daughter, and found out that he loves the snowman character from Disney's "Frozen." Went on Amazon, they have it, and will ship it directly to him, free delivery, and it will be there by Thursday. I subscribe to Amazon Prime, and almost never pay shipping on anything. RO- I heard on our news tonight that Amazon is testing little drones about the size of a breadbox to deliver boxes. Is that too much! A little drone being guided by someone somewhere would pick it up at a fulfillment center and fly it directly to the address! We have a big center west of Phx where they are doing the testing.
Oh, to EVERYONE... I DID hear from pappabear and he was not affected by the storms, but he did move as of Dec. 1. He is now in Paris, IL and that address should be on RO's list.
We are suppose to get a cold wet storm here on Thursday, but I will have my outdoor decs up by then.

Been busy getting the house decorated for Christmas and am now done. Now I can relax and enjoy the season. This Friday is the deacon
s party, which I love to attend, then on Saturday I have a date with my nephew and his wife to attend the Christmas concert at the mission in Goliad...can't wait. Just fun stuff ahead that requires no work.

We are still finishing up the leftovers, too, Ro. I think today is about the last day we can eat them, though. I forgot to tell ya'll something funny! On Thanksgiving, Bruce gave the dogs some scraps of turkey and dressing. Well, the dogs slept on their beds in the garage that night and I guess the rich food was too much for one of them and she pooped in Bruce's open toolbox! It was alot, too...and runny....poor Bruce. hehe

I saw something about those drones, too, MDC..interesting. Sean is doing well on the job, MDC. They gave him an extra task cleaning one of the offices and they will pay him 40 dollars to do that. Its only about an hour's worth of work so that's good. They dont always have cars for him to do so they are trying to throw some extra work his way. Sean just loves the job and the people he works with so its good. He isnt make much money and at some point will probably be looking for another part time job. He told me that this year for Christmas he wants Santa to give him some money to make repairs on his car. I told him stop eating out all the time. ;)

Supposed to be in the mid-80s here today. Not very Christmasy, but the cold should be getting here on Thursday.

Better finish the coffee and get going.

December 03, 2013 - Msg 95646: Oh, poor Bruce! That would be a serious annoyance. Reminds me of when we had Rab, a big white bunny who lived in the house. He was litterbox trained, for the most part, but now and then would sneak into our closet and fill one of Dale's shoes with pellets. My first clue would be when I'd hear Dale bellow from that part of the house - "That dadburn rabbit! Lanni, either get control of him or get rid of him!" Of course, all it really required was to dump the contents of the shoe into the commode. Didn't even leave a mark! And of course, in a little while, Dale would be watching TV in the living room, with the offending rabbit either in his lap, or curled around his shoulders. Rab loved to do that. He'd climb to the back of the sofa, walk along until he found suitable shoulders (he preferred men - more room) and he'd step down and drape himself around the chosen neck like a fur piece, and just hang there. It was hilarious. One of Dale's favorite things to do was to ignore the rabbit completely when we'd have company over, as though he didn't see him. The visitors would be giving this big white rabbit the eye, as he telescoped himself along, and when he'd finally choose someone and drape himself, well, it was pretty funny! We, of course, were saying nothing, while this bewildered person sat there with a rabbit around their neck, not knowing what, if anything, to say. Finally, they would have to say something, and Dale would look all innocent and say, "Who, the rabbit? Oh yeah. He hangs out around here a lot." And go on with the conversation. I know people thought we were crazy, but it was just so funny.

Well, got to get dressed and head for the church. The annual Women's Christmas Dinner is tonight. Got to put on a little bling and go join the fun. Blessings, folks! --Romeena

Well, I did a dumb "man thing" today. Stood on the top of a step ladder putting up my decs, and out she went from under me. Luckily all I hurt was my pride. I "rode it down" onto the soft dormant grass, but it sure gave me a scare!

I just remember a few of the Christmas back then being made great by my older brother. One Christmas I recieved a #9 Bobby Hull Chicago Blackhawks jersey, hockey gloves and a polaroid camera. These gifts were a lot of money back then too. Till this day my older brother and sister are just really special people. Like I said. Well back in "68" my Brother was serving over seas in Vietnam and was not scheduled to be home for Christmas, but to our "SURPRISE" he show up on Christmas Eve. I can STILL see the look of surprise (AND ANGER) on my Mom's face because she knew that this leave home did not come with a hitch...She said: "Oh NO YOU DIDN"T"!! Yep, he signed up for a second tour of duty and a "Christmas leave home" was a signing bonus"...I have never seen my Mother so mad & happy at the same time. That Christmas was a real special one but, also stressful at the same time. Those were tough times then for both the servicemen & families. He was a Huey helicopter gunner & pilot in a real hot spot at that time.
He made it home safely after the second tour thanks to a lot of prayers....

MDC , Bet you looked like Clark W. Griswold when he fell off the ladder, since you live in AZ at least you didn't put a slug of ice thru your neighbors window! Glad you didn't get hurt, because we aren't spring chickens anymore you know!..ha

December 04, 2013 - Msg 95653: Good morning, porch. No, Possum, I haven't sent the list out yet, but it's in my plan for today, so watch your email. I'd do it right now, but I've got an appointment for a final follow-up visit with my back surgeon. We have some thing to discuss, so it may not be a final visit. The two areas he worked on - neck and sacral spine - are just fine. However, I'm still having significant pain in the mid-back, in the lower thoracic area. Never free of pain there unless I'm lying down. That's where the deepest curve of my scoliosis is, and that's surely what's causing the pain. I'm pretty sure there's not much that can be done about it, but we'll see. Luckily I have a very high pain tolerance, but I have to admit, this is getting tiresome.

MDC, I don't want to hear any more about you falling off ladders! You can get hurt that way! Did I understand you to say you stood on the TOP of a stepladder? The very top step? I don't know about your ladder, but mine has a very clear sign on that step, that says "Do not stand on this step." There is a reason for that. When you stand on that step, the connection between your feet and the ladder becomes a loose joint, and it will bend just like an elbow, and, well, you know what happens then. I have five ladders. One hardly qualifies as a ladder, at two feet, but I guess it is. Then there's four feet, six feet, eight feet, and one that hangs on the back fence, at ten feet. I use the two and four foot ones, David uses the six and eight foot ones, and Ted has used the ten foot one a few times when mounting things on poles or trees around here. Personally, I don't like ladders or high places, and will avoid them when I can. I like to fly, though, and especially enjoy flying with my son in his Beechcraft. Not much under you but air in that thing, but I love it. Go figure.

OK, folks. The Christmas card list went out in email just now, so check your inboxes, anyone who said they wanted to participate. If anyone else wants to join in, that's fine. I can add to the list and send it again, if necessary. We don't want to leave anyone out. I snail-mailed a copy to Pappabear.

Saw the doc today. He made a bunch of xrays, says all the repair work he did is holding up perfectly. I knew that, because I have no pain anywhere that he worked, where I used to have blinding, incapacitating pain in the lumbar spine. I do have significant pain in the mid-thoracic spine, but that's just one of those "deal with it" things. As I expected, he said it's the scoliosis, and he does not recommend trying to do anything surgically to fix it. There is a surgical procedure, but it's horrendous, involves about a fifteen inch incision down the middle of my back, considerable pain, long recovery, and no guarantee of success. He said he has seen many such cases end up worse than they were before. That's been my observation from a nurse's standpoint, and I agree with him. I'm not going to do it. If I could just take Advil a couple of times a day, it would help a lot, but when I take it more than about once a week, my kidney profile starts getting all messed up. Since I'm diabetic, my kidneys are at some risk anyway, and I don't plan to compound that. I will just deal with it. Fortunately, God blessed me with a very high pain tolerance.

Well, guess I'll go get my Nativity out and set it up on the credenze. I don't have as much room on that credenza as I used to, though. My kids got me one of those cool, Old-timey-looking Crosley record players, which also plays CDs and other stuff. I have a lot of old 33 albums, some over 60 years old, and had no way to play them. Now, I do! I've got Christmas albums by Elvis, Ernie Ford, Jim Nabors and others, and lots of old classics. There are several big-band albums, and for those who like jazz, I have "Stompin' At the Famous Door", by Al Hirt. Several big Broadway show albums - Oklahoma, Sound of Music, King and I, etc. Really a good collection, and now I can play them. Gotta love kids! --Romeena
