Would someone please tell me what on EARTH anyone could possibly need with a 56,000 sq ft house? That would be more than 20 times the size of my house! I can't even imagine a house that size. That's just ridiculous.
OK, G-F and Asa, I got you on the list. MDC, do you think Pappabear would want to be on it? I know I can't email him the list, but I'd be happy to snail mail it to him.
I'm going to miss getting a card from REV this year. He was a dear friend, and we're all going to miss him. Please, let's all continue to pray for his precious family. I just can't bear to think of what they're going through, and how difficult the holidays are going to be for them. We know he's with Jesus now, but I can tell you from experience, that even for a strong Christian, a person of faith, it takes a while before that becomes any real comfort. It happens, but not right away. The human side of us wants our loved one here, with us. Our spiritual side knows the truth, but the human side overrides for a while.
Boo, I'm so glad that things are a bit better for Sean, and glad that Dusty was hired back. Sounds like a young man who can be helped to straighten his life out, he hasn't gone too far yet. Prayers for you, my friend, as you try to help him, because I know that's what you're going to do.

Romeena, As Forrest Gump's Momma told him: "There's only so much money a person needs the rest is just for show'in off"! I guess a 56,000 sq ft house was just show'in off is what I'm thinkin...Who would want to keep that big of a crib clean? He would to have had a whole bunch of Aunt Bee's to pull that off.
Off to the WalMart for groceries, think I' get a pick up a peck of pickled peppers from Pete that he just picked and put'em in my pantry...But what am I gonna do with a PECK of pickled peppers? I guess I'll just get one jar instead....But I wonder if they would freeze well in the freezer? Wonder if I could get them cheaper from "Diamond Jim's?.....

Hahsaha! G-F, you are a bird in this world. A real caution! You got me to wonderin', though. Just how would you go about keeping a house of that size clean? Obviously, you would hire housekeepers, but how many? How would the work be divided? I'm not sure one person, working eight hours a day, every day, with a vacuum cleaner, could keep all those floors clean. It might take three or four people working full time, just to do that. Then there's the dusting, and the polishing. Not just furniture, but there's probably dozens of trophies and awards. How many bathrooms in a house that big? Probably at least a dozen. I'll bet there are at least two kitchens - one for big functions, and one for "everyday." Surely the kitchen staff would maintain them. Of course, there are probably some areas, like guest quarters, that are closed off part of the time and only have to be cleaned when they're opened, but still, the idea of trying to keep my house clean and at least twenty more besides - the mind boggles!
Well, I'm headed up to the church to help with the selection of the pictures to go into the church directory. Also got to pick up recycle bags at City Hall, and go to the grocery store. All in all, it will be a fun afternoon. Blessings! --Romeena

My knockout roses have decided to throw one last whingding before the frost, and are just blooming up a storm. Several of the hybrid teas are putting on a final show, too. There's one gold/peach colored one, don't know its name, but it sure is pretty. The blooms are big as a grapefruit, and are just beautiful. There's a creamy white one with red picotee markings, and Mr. Lincoln and Veteran's Honor are both setting buds, on long, graceful stems. Angel Face has finished blooming, but I'm thinking if I go prune it lightly, it just may do it again. That's the blooomin-est little rose I ever saw!
Eloise and Jerry have been gone for the last ten days, on a tour of the Carolina coast, and a cruise to the Bahamas. They got home about an hour ago. Toye Starr and I picked them up from the airport, and it's good to have them back. I haven't had anybody to play with all this time.

Howdy Porch family...sorry I haven't been checking in as much as usual. Been busy with everything. I actually went to town (Corpus Christi) three times this week, which is very unusual. Bruce wanted Erin and I to attend his Thanksgiving lunch at work, so we did that, and did some more shopping (just a little), and today I went with Sean to a vacuum shop to buy a part...he he repairing the commercial-grade vacuum that belongs to St. Susan's church. Beautiful weather but I could stand for it to be colder. We are still having to run the air conditioner due to the warm afternoons and the high humidity.
I am busy making Thanksgiving preparations, too. We will be having a big houseful, as usual, and one of Bruce's nephew from up by Dallas will be coming (he and his wife and two boys). We will also have bruce's sister and mom, and all of my family, and Elisa (the girl I mentor)...maybe more. I love having people here at thanksgiving! I am going to make turkey, and Bruce's sister will make one too, and I will have people bring a dish and/or dessert. I have already started doing what I can ahead of time. I diced up all my onion and celery for my dressing and put it in the freezer, and I even made up my homemade cranberry sauce today. I am going to try to make the cooking as stress-free as possible so I wont be too worn out to enjoy the day.
Guess I should start on my Christmas cards. I always like to write a little note int he cards instead of just signing them so it takes some time. I enjoy it, though, if i start early and I'm not in a rush to get them mailed off.
Anyone else have any Thanksgiving plans to share?

Good late evening, porch. Actually, it's Sunday morning. I stayed up watching the two "Mrs. Miracle" movies. So good. Predictable, maybe some would say trite, but still so sweet. True "feel good" movies. I love 'em!
Thanksgiving plans? Well, on the big day, I'll be going with Eloise's family, probably to her daughter's house (Brittney's sister), as we have done for the past few years. Then on Saturday after Thanksgiving, I'll cook a full meal here. Eloise likes to have holiday things on THE day, and after working as a nurse for 35 years, I long ago lost that requirement. My nephew Zach, the ballplayer, will come down from OSU on Wednesday, and stay through the weekend, so he'll have two Thanksgivings, along with the rest of us. We'll have the same crowd both days, and the same basic menu, but at the same time, it will be different. We'll have turkey and dressing both days, but my cooking style with a turkey differs widely from Terri's, and probably several of the side dishes will be different. All good, just different. I love doing it this way. Somehow, cooking on Saturday seems more relaxed and un-rushed than when cooking on Thursday. Makes no sense, but it still feels that way to me.
Well, if I don't get to bed, I'm going to be falling asleep in church, like Gomer and Barney when the visiting preacher was there. I hate that feeling! Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

Romeena, you could wear tiny little bells instead of the dangly earings. That way when you started to nod off they would ring and wake you up. Might work.
Last night I watched the original Miracle on 34th street. I haven't seen it in years. I was surprised to see a lot of actor's in it that have TAGS connections. Mr. Macey was Mr. Walker from the drug store. There were a couple of others but they escape me at the moment. I also saw Fred Mertz. I think I prefer the newer version that was made back in the 90s.
Sure good to see you Boo. Sounds like you have a big day planned. We are going to Stacey and Matt's house for the day. It's a long drive so we have to leave early. If we can get on the road early and beat the traffic, we should be able to get to their house in under 2 minutes. LOL We are supplying the turkey (Stacey is cooking it) and they are supplying prime rib. Matt and I will have a major billiards championship tournament, followed up with a dart tournament. He and I have a great time playing 9 ball, race to 7. My other daughter Sarah and her family are going to be in Las Vegas for a Bowl game that my Grandson Kadin is playing in. We will miss them not being here with us but it is a big deal for Kadin obviously. I know I should probably go with them but Thanksgiving in Vegas just doesn't work for me. Well Boo, that's probably more than you wanted to hear, but you asked. LOL, That reminds me of the episode where Clara Edwards is going on and on about her nuerolga (sp) to Floyd, and he keeps interrupting her with his own ailments. She finally, very exasperated, says Floyd, you asked how I am, to which Floyd responds "I didn't ask". Very funny scene in a color episode.
Guess I better go get ready for preaching my own self.

Still, it's fun and everyone enjoys it. David will come a little early and move my plumeria plants into the garage. I have watched a couple of movies on Lifetime channel but not really worth my time. There is nothing like the old classics. Guess what i am reading right now? John Grisham's "Skipping Christmas". I had a good day...Preachin' was very good. Pastor spoke about the centurian from matthew 8, who had so much faith. Then took Elisa home with me and had lunch, watched a little TV, took a short snooze, took a drive to visit my nephew, poke around a little in the attic to see what Christmas decorations i might want to use this year. I came across 2 black metal boxes that were my dad's. I took them home with me after he died, and "EUREKA!"...I found some great stuff in those boxes! Love letters that my grandfather (who died when my dad was 14) had sent to my grandmother when they were dating, and letters my dad had sent to my grandmother from his ship during WW2, among other things, like Dad's cub scout and boy scout cards from the 30's. I even found a postcard from the 1800's that belonged to my great-great grandmother, i think. fun stuff! I found part of an old newspaper from 1945 that contained an article from a Japanese woman who had been in the camps that the american Japanese women had been placed in during the war. I have alot of reading to do...I just with my grandfather and my dad had better handwriting! I also found an old leather wallet and straight edge razor with an ivory handle, that I believe belonged to my great grandfather. I am scratching my head and wondering how I ended up with all this stuff. I am the youngest in my family and the youngest of all my cousins, too. Just lucky, I guess. :)

Today is a special day, indeed. It's so true, without the sacrifice of those brave men and women, America would be a very different place today. On this day, especially, we must remember that the freedom that was bought with their blood must be guarded carefully. We cannot allow it to be stolen from us, bit by tiny bit.
No, G-F, it's not just you. I imagine that most of those who are about our age (I know, I'm older, but not THAT much older) will have strong memories of family members who served. My father was part of the Greatest Generation, as was yours. Daddy wasn't in the military, because his civilian job was critical to the war effort and he was deferred because of that. He did finally enlist anyway, and had received a call-up number, but the war ended before he was called.
That shadowbox is a great idea. I have one that my mother had made, which contains memorabilia from her grandfather - my great-grandfather. He actually drove cattle over the old Chisholm trail, and his badge from the Old Traildrivers Association is in the box. His little vest is in there as well, along with his "sleeveholders", a garter-like thing that men wore to keep their sleeves in place. Apparently shirts didn't come in sleeve lengths in those days, they were just all long, and men with shorter arms wore the sleeveholders to keep their sleeves from hanging down over their hands. There is also a pair of tiny eyeglasses, which were passed down to my great-grandfather from his grandfather. They were brought from Germany, and are very small. They wouldn't fit any man I know today. I guess people have gotten bigger. Anyway, a shadowbox is a great way to display treasures such as these. Any good frame shop can design and build one for you. Mine was made at our local Hobby Lobby, and has little niches for the individual items.
Well, I'm off to find a good movie on TV, or maybe I'll just pop in a TAGS disc. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Good morning porch dwellers. Sure am appreciating all these videos y'all are posting. Like most of you, I have a great love and appreciation to all who have, are, and will be serving. I thank you.
I think I have mentioned before that my folks are from England. Prior to coming to America, my Dad served in the British Army in W.W.2. He was at Dunkirk France during that horrible battle. He was injured there with a hip injury that left him with a noticable limp the rest of his life. He recieved an award equal to a Purple Heart and a small amount of compensation for his disability. I still remember as a kid, going and getting the mail from the mail box, and seeing an envelope from overseas with the stamp "On Her Majesty's Service" emblazed on it. I didn't fully recognize what it was and all it represented until I got older. My Dad never said much about those years, as was the case of a lot of that generation. Just before he passed away though, he did tell me a story I had never known. His unit had been ordered to leave the area they were at and retreat to the nearest beach to be rescued. It was during this time he injured his hip and couldn't keep up with his unit. Finally he managed to reach the beach, and he mentioned all of the dead bodies laying there. There was an Hotel near the beach and he tells of a song blasting away from the loudspeakers. The song was "Somewhere, over the rainbow". He said he had no idea why it was being played. As he stood there, not knowing what to do, he heard someone yelling his namke from a small boat out from the beach. It was his platoon leader yelling for him to wade out to the boat which he did, and was pulled to safety. It wasn't until hearing this story that I realized as kids, everytime "The Wizard of Oz" was shown on tv, he would leave the room and go out in the garage and work. I guess the memories that song brought out was more than he could handle. What an amazing generation.
Prayers for all for a wonderful day.

Thanks for sharing that Asa, I think most of the men (boys) that served, have a lot of those same bad memories. How could one not forget the horrors of war! I remember Boo sharing her Dad had a lot to do with getting the USS Lexington to Corpus Christi to spend her retirement days there for all to see. How cool is that! I got to see the USS North Carolina & the USS Yorktown (the one renamed for the "Fighting Lady" that was sunk at the battle of Midway.) Those were awesome tours. I guess that is why My Son (and Grandson)& I love going to the USAF Museum in Dayton, were are blessed to have it in our state. We want to be sure to be there when they finish the restoration of "The Memphis Belle").
Sorry ladies if I am rambling, but that stuff just "Twangs my bud"!

Don't apologize, G-F. We gals get emotional about all of this, too. Remember - "They also serve who only stand and wait." I love these videos! I still remember standing on the curb along Houston Street in San Antonio, when the victory parades were held following VE Day and VJ Day. I remember the troops marching by, most units dressed in battle gear, with big old combat boots, rifles over shoulders, and the sun glinting off the bayonets that were attached to many of the rifles. As I've said before, my dad was in a critical job and finally quit so he could enlist, but the war ended a oouple of weeks later. As I remember those parades now, and recall the bayonets, I cannot imagine my gentle, peace-loving dad actually using one of those things to kill someone, but I know in my heart he would have done so if he had been in the situation. It would have damaged something in his soul, but he would have done it. I think all those who were there came home with invisible scars, but they did what had to be done. God bless them. --Romeena

It is a long standing tradition for a select group of sailors to dress up in their tropical white uniforms and render honors when their ship enters Pearl Harbor Hawaii and passes the USS Arizona memorial. During my last year on active duty in the Navy, I remember the last time my ship pulled into Pearl Harbor. I was selected to be the officer in charge of the group of sailors to "man the rails" on deck. As we neared the Arizona, I gave the order to come to attention and salute. I could not help develop a lump in my throat. Then shortly after the ship docked, a fellow officer and I decided to visit the USS Arizona memorial while still dressed in our tropical white uniforms. I was moved to tears reading the 1,177 names of every crew member who was killed. Of the 2,400 Americans who died at Pearl Harbor that day, about one half were crew members aboard the Arizona. May they rest in peace.
There are 13 known living USS Arizona survivors.

PH--Across from the capitol building in Phx there is a USS Arizona Memorial that has the ship's anchor and one of it's 16" gun barrels. It is quite impressive, and I also get that lump when I visit it!
ASA- thanks for that story. I know that in heaven the following probably wont happen, but since we will have an "eternity", I would love to visit all those men and listen to their stories.
GF--I would sure like to see the Memphis Belle "in person." Her is a link to a video if you want the see the A-20, the attack(A) plane turned bomber (B), but whose name never got changed!

MDC, I was not aware of the USS Arizona memorial in Phoenix. So I searched the internet to learn more and discovered that Phoenix has gun barrels from both the USS Arizona and the USS Missouri. The USS Arizona was sunk by the Japanese at the beginning of World War 2, and the USS Missouri is where the Japanese officially surrendered to end World War 2. What a great exhibit to have items that represent both the beginning and ending of World War 2.

Great memories being shared! Wow...can't believe you remembered that about my dad, G-D, (about the Lexington). He was very proud to have been a part of that and I have some great pictures of him standing on the deck when it came here.
Asa, loved your story. I dont remember you having ever shared it. I know my dad started having some flashback memories the last few years of his life but he wouldnt share some things. I had an uncle (Dad's older brother) who served in Europe in the army during ww2...he was an explosives expert or something and won the bronze metals. I never had the opportunity to talk to him about it, but wish I had. Of course, he probably had some memories he never shared, too. He was a big guy with a real soft heart, so must have been really tough on him. I know he won the metal for putting himself at great risk to rescue a wounded man.
It's real chilly here this morning and you all know how I love that! I think I will stick close to home and just enjoy it...maybe put in a load of laundry and sit on the porch swing in my winter robe (I hardly ever get to wear the thing).
PH, there is a WW2 museum in Fredricksburg (birthplace of Admiral Nimitz) and they have a piece of the Arizona on display...just a chunk of the hull, I think. I wonder if you have seen it, Ro?
Better git..

PS- that uncle of mine who won the bronze metal?...well, some of my fondest memories of him were of him sitting in his easy chair in the living room, watching TV and holding his 80 lb doberman in his lap every night. hehe She was a pup that we rescued from an abusive home where she was starved. He took her and she lived like a queen in their home..she was the smartest dog I ever knew and she loved Uncle Wyatt like crazy. She was his baby for sure. :)

PSS-one of the letters I found the other night, were from my grandma's sister. She was congratulating her on Wyatt's birth and also expressing sympathy for the loss of Wyatt's twin, Wayne. I knew that Wyatt was a twin and that his brother died soon after birth, but I never knew his name. I am still in the process of going through the letters and it is very interesting.

Boo, I remembered that because I DID stay awake in History class, so my education was worth every penny! Speaking of Admiral Nimitz, it got me remembering the movie "Final Countdown" with Kirk Douglas where the carrier "Nimitz" went back in time to Dec 6 1941 and caught the Japanese ready to attack Pearl Harbor. Fantasy movie, but what a neat concept. While on the subject of WW2, Cleveland has a WW2 sub "USS Cod" that my Son & I went thru, man was that close quarters! Puts a whole new meaning to "adventure sleeping".
Boo, got to thinkin' you could use "The Porch" as one of your teaching modules for home schoolin', a lot of history talk here.

Wow. So Phoenix has gun barrels from both the USS Arizona and the USS Missouri. Don't you just know that the Japanese wish they had never attacked? That really didn't work out too well for them, did it? I've never figured out what they were thinking. They were running all over the Asian world, attacking everyone, and then decided to jump on us too! They were carrying out tests of unimaginable horror, with "dirty" bombs of all descriptions. They conducted "investigations" involving vivisection of humans, under the guise of "research." They bombed a town in China (Ningbo) with bombs filled with fleas that were carrying the bubonic plague! I found all this through a little Googling, and finally had to quit reading, it was just too awful. So - whenever anyone questions whether we should have bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki, just suggest they read some of this stuff and think what would have happened if we hadn't done that. War is a terrible thing, but sometimes it's inevitable, and all we can do is defend ourselves. Thank God we have always had the heroes, ready to do just that.
Regarding vertigo remedy exercises, my cousin fixed his vertigo attacks several years ago, with some exercises. As I recall, they weren't difficult, and he got results in a short time. I could email him and see if he still remembers them.
Well, better go feed little Starr. We slept late this morning, and when we got up I stopped off here at the computer. Haven't even been to the kitchen yet, and I know she's hungry, poor little thing. She hates it when I stop here in the mornings! Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Asa, i am sorry you are dealing with vertigo...Erin did have it and Bruce still has it off and on. They both went to a therapist who used a procedure on them that helped. The therapist would lay them on one side with their head hanging over the table, then he would take their head in his hands and shake it. He would do that with them lying on both sides and on their back. It worked wonders for Erin...not as well for Bruce but the therapist said it would probably be that way...something about age.

Hey, Boo and anyone else who is dealing with vertigo. I just Googled "treatment for vertigo" and came up with some great ideas. Most of them sound very much like what Bruce's therapist did, and also like what I remember my cousin doing. Honestly, it looks like a patient could just do it himself - my cousin did. It just involves rotating the head from side to side, and we can all do that. Check it out, watch the videos that you'll find there, and see how it works. Simple, easy, harmless - and FREE! Can't ask for more than that. --Romeena
