And Asa, I agree with you about Judge Judy. I used to watch her show - and for a time I listened to her show on the radio at the insur@nce company I worked for as there was a station that received the tv channel - quite a bit, and I always liked her no-nonsense, and as you said, common sense way of dealing with things. We need more people like that today. And she had some funny sayings as well. One of my favorites she said was, "Don't piddle on my leg and tell me it's raining!" I think she even wrote a book with that title on it. And if you've ever seen her in action, when she looks at a person with that determined stare, you know that nobody is going to dare tell her it's raining. :)

Saw a clip on the news and an Elvis corn dog is battered in some type of banana goop,deep fried and then smeared with peanut butter-gross!!(In case y'all don't know,Elvis had a hankering for fried banana & peanut butter,sammiches,hence the corn dog idea).

I know we are famous here in the South for some unusual foods,but I don't know WHERE they came up with that concoction!

Oh, please! I wasn't aware they had "closed" Lady Liberty! Guess I missed that one. Of all the nerve! And yes, the hypocrisy of that one practically screams. Don't get me started.

Woohoo! I found my binoculars! I have about eight pair, accumulated over the years. Four are small, appropriate for taking to a play when your tickets are for the nosebleed seats, and four are big, powerful things perfect for observing wildlife. I had loaned all but one pair of the big ones to Dave and Brittney one day when they were taking the boys to a Ranger game. I was sure they had returned them, and they said they had, but I couldn't find them. Then yesterday, I opened a book cabinet and there they were, still in the bag they were in when I gave them to David. So now, when LaRue and I go to see "The Lion King" tomorrow, we'll have our little binocs!

Eloise is out of town, and can't use her last ticket to the Dallas Summer Musicals the kids gave us for Christmas. I was hoping Brittney would go, but the boys have baseball games, so I've asked my friend LaRue to go instead. The State Fair is going on, so that should be fun. Neither of us is too enthusiastic about walking the whole Fair, but we'll go a couple of hours early and at least get a Fletcher's Corny Dog, and probably a funnel cake. We'll get to see the reincarnation of Big Tex, after the old one burned down last year, and maybe see a couple of exhibits, but mostly, I'd like to find a comfortable bench and just people-watch. Laaw, the things you see when you haven't got your gun!

Anyway, we decided to ride the train into town, rather than taking the car. I absolutely hate getting into that traffic, it's expensive to park, we'd have to walk a very long way from the parking lot, and cars get damaged on those lots quite often. So, we'll take the TRE to Victory station, transfer to the Green Line, and get off the train right in front of the main gate to the fair. A day pass is $2.50 for seniors. Can't beat a deal like that, and it's a lot safer. Should be a fun day!

Well, lunch calls. I think I'll finally eat the very last of that soup. It may be a while before I do that again. It's just not possible to make a small amount of soup, and I don't like to freeze it. I can truthfully say, I've had enough veggie soup to last me for a while. I've been eating it now since last Saturday night. Every day. Every blessed day, and sometimes twice a day! No more soup for me! Sure has been an inexpensive week, though. The soup cost me about $20 to make, and I've gotten at least ten meals out of it.

You could really see the expressions on the actors faces, and the costumes were outa sight the headdress for Mustafa was spectacular! I liked it better the Phantom, but then again for that we had upper level nose bleed seats. Have fun....

October 12, 2013 - Msg 94981: Oh, G-F, that must have been wonderful! I'd like, just once, to have seats like that for a major production. They're so expensive though, that I probably wouldn't be able to enjoy it for worrying about how much I had spent on the tickets. Dave and Brittney have done this twice now, giving us the "mini-pack" of season tickets to the Dallas Summer Musicals. It lets us see four shows. If they got close-up seats for us, it would be so expensive that we'd be upset with them for spending the money! The seats we have, in the upper balcony, are $55 per performance, so you can just imagine what choice seats would cost. We don't mind, we just take binocs, go early and have a good sandwich in the mezzanine cafe, and get to see a very good show. It's always a lot of fun. Our kids are quite creative. They also gave us those tickets to see the Lipizzaner stallions perform down in Waco a few years ago. Eloise was just nine days past a knee replacement, but she's tough, and we went anyway. Her surgeon could hardly believe it. We parked right in front of the door and she got on her walker and just motored right on in the venue! It was just wonderful. We had front row seats for that one. I could have reached out and touched the horses at times, they were passing so close to us. So beautiful!

God is amazing. He has such good plans for us, if we don't interfere. David and Brittney grew up together, since they were four years old, in the same church. They didn't like each other much during those years. She thought he was annoying, always teasing someone, and he thought she was stuck-up and too sensitive. They were in their early 20s when each took a new look at the other, and decided there might be something good there. They had just begun to date when Dale died. I wish he could have known that they got together, because he liked Brittney. She had been one of his pages for several years, when he was one of the kings in our church's Christmas pageant, so he got to know her then. She was a young teen at that time. Anyway, the kids found each other, they have a great marriage, and their marriage brought me and Eloise together, which has been a good thing. We've traveled, and had a lot of fun together. We had been in the same church since 1974, and were acquainted, but it's a big church, and we were in different social groups. After the kids married, we were naturally together at holidays and such, and our friendship blossomed. Such adventures we've had, in our many travels.

Well, guess I'll go tidy up the kitchen a bit. For no more cooking than I do these days, I don't know how that kitchen gets messed up, but it does. Blessings! --Romeena

October 13, 2013 - Msg 94991: Good evening, porch! I just got home from the fair. My friend LaRue used Eloise's ticket, and we saw "The Lion King." Friends, if you haven't seen a Broadway-style production of this story, please try to do it. It was absolutely wonderful. The costumes, the special effects, the staging, the choreography, the music, the whole thing was just magical. I won't try to describe it, because you just have to see it to understand. I was spellbound, the whole time. I have never seen such creativity as was displayed in the costuming. Amazing!

We rode the train from Irving to Fair Park. With a senior discount, it cost us $2.50 each, and we got off the train about twenty feet from the front gate of the fairgrounds. We talked with people who had driven down, through horrendous traffic, paid $20 to park, and had to walk a quarter mile or more to get in the gate! The train trip took us about 40 minutes, my car remained safe in the lot at our station in Irving, and people in the fairground lots always report a lot of damage. I'm so glad we have the trains - they're really useful.

We had a Corny Dog, and a funnel cake, so we can officially say we went to the fair. Neither of us was up to too much walking, so we didn't see a lot of the exhibits, and I care nothing for the midway, but still, we had a good time. I wouldn't go just for the fair itself, but I'd go to see a production like "The Lion King" any ld day!

Well, I'm fair-weary, and headed for my chair. Toye Starr is about over her snit about being left home alone, so maybe she'll come and cuddle. Rotten kid. --Romeena

Now I am about to dive into my nice, comfy bed and be very thankful to God that I have a roof over my head, food in my tummy, loved ones safe and sound, and joy in the midst of a very difficult trial. He is good.

I'll dry it out - it's a small price to pay for this beautiful, life-giving rain! I'll go get it in a minute, and I won't even use an umbrella. I don't mind getting wet. Like the paper, I'll get dry again. I don't know how much we've gotten, or how much we'll get, but right now, it's raining! Thank you, Lord!

Oh, G-F! The giraffes were unbelievable! They even moved like giraffes, and they didn't seem to be selfish at all. The elephant was no slouch either. That was ingenious, to have one person inside each leg. Their timing, the way they made him move, was just incredible. As for the hyenas, I'll bet those people had backaches, staying bent over like they did. I was impressed with the young Simba. That little kid was a very good actor! I wonder if it was the same cast you saw? They were all very good. The actor who played Scar was great! He had that bored, sarcastic, over-done upper-class accent down pat - kind of like Thurston Howell or Charles Winchester on steroids. Anyway, it was a wonderful show. I'd like to see it again, but at those prices, it will not be this year!

Boo, they're still called corny dogs around here, especially the Fletcher's brand. They are just so good! Expensive, but good. We bought too many coupons when we first got on the fairgrounds, and had a bunch left over. I couldn't stand losing the money like that, so we approached two women who were standing in line at a coupon kiosk, and offered to sell them ours - at the same price, of course. They grabbed the chance, bought our coupons, and went away happy, pushing their two little kids in their strollers. No line for them, and we didn't lose any money.

It was really a fun day, but I'm tired today. My knees aren't used to that much walking, and they're sore today. Bette Davis surely was right. Old age ain't no place for sissies. Still, I'm here, and happy to be, so I'm not complaining. I'm just stating fact. My knees hurt today, but that's because I was able to go to the fair yesterday! Can't beat a deal like that.

the "mayberry aganda" mostly it's the winery folks who consider TAGS not sofisticated enough. There are many wineries in the area now that tobacco is not a big crop,( grapes grow well in the same enviroment as tobacco.)I got this from a dear friend who is very well versed in all things Mayberry & local to the mount airy area as well. needless to say, my family is livid over even the thought of anyone "dissing" Mayberry and/or Tags. They ought to be ashamed.

There was a problem with a "beer garden" that was not sanctioned, but remember this is a "Family" event...Mt. Airy has a big "Fall Leaves Festival" about 2 weeks after MD"s let that stuff go on then! Surry Arts Council & the Chamber of Commerce have all kinds of activities all year long let us have OUR time and the "Winers" can have there's....
I think it's pure envy & jealousy!....I said it and I ain't takin it back!. Boy does this have my boxers in a bunch! (Mayberry $ is worth the same as wine $ they don't have a problem taking our $ at the motels & restaurants).

I think they were the same ones who would come and kick your sand castles down when we were kids. Today, their kids are the ones who go around defacing other people's lawn decorations on holidays. They learned it from their parents. No matter what you try to do, there's always a spoiler waiting in the wings, to try to ruin it. I think Mt. Airy should stand firm, tell the wineries to wait their turn, and then you'll put up with them just like you expect them to put up with you. Fair's fair.

This touches a nerve with me. Irving, which used to be dry, now has beer and wine being peddled in every corner convenience store, it's in the grocery stores, several large stores have dropped everything else and sell nothing but beer and wine, and mark my words, it won't be long until the liquor folks will be pushing for package stores all over town. This started out with a simple request - "just let us have mixed drinks and wine sold in restaurants." "Fine dining" was the term they pushed for. Well, the "fine dining" has progressed, step by step, just as we knew it would, until we're one step away from liquor stores all over the place. Some things never change.

Oh, I thought this was interesting - it was in this month's "Reader's Digest." Author Fran Lebowitz is quoted as saying, "Great people talk about ideas, average people talk about things, and small people talk about wine." There may be some truth there. I know someone who can recognize the year of a wine just by the "bouquet", and who can talk at length about vintners, good or bad years, nuances, finishes, and the like. However, steer the conversation to anything else, and you can hear the crickets chirping.

Mt. Airy, beware! The wineries have proliferated around Fredericksburg, TX, where my daughters live, and in just the past five years the atmosphere in the town has changed somewhat. It's losing that country charm, and heading into sophistication, which will truly be a pity.

As you might have guessed from this little rant, I don't drink, never have. I have my reasons, and you may be surprised to know that while pleasing God is one of them, it's not the only one, or even the main one. I will, however, defend the right of anyone to drink if they choose. I may consider it inadvisable, but it's still the right of the individual. I will say this, though. I've never seen a social or family situation that was improved because alcohol was part of the equation, but I've surely seen a lot that were made worse. And that's all I have to say about that.

Seems like there was another verse I heard Andy singing about her "mouth is like a fire place with all the ashes out". Or am I getting that confused with another song? Or it may have been on Matlock he sung it. He did sing a few Mayberry songs on Matlock, like "Salty Dog".
Speaking of Salty Dog, I sure wish her and New Neighbor and Hazel and others would join us again. I miss them.

Hey MDC, I forgot PH had him a Thanksgiving day on Monday. Do the Canadians have a traditional type of Thanksgiving meal like turkey PH? Canadian Goose maybe? :) I used to hunt those years ago when I was a hunter. Huge birds, although I never shot one.

Well Tom and GF, Browns lost a tough one I see. But they are playing better than they have for a number of years. Almost halfway through the season and they have a better record than the steelers. Of course most of the leauge has a better record than the steelers right now. lol

Well Boo, no 90's here. Been struggling to get in the 50's the last couple of days. Leaves are starting to drop. Old man winter is right around the corner waiting to spank me.

getting ready to do the Susan G.Komen race/walk for the cure on Sunday. Patrick's girlfriend, Courtney and I are going to walk. I have participated the past few years and always look forward to being part of the awesome group of folks who gather.

all the talk about tater soup has made me hungry! I may have to cook up a pot this weekend. i am thinking about making a shepherds pie. sounds like a good think for a cool fall day as well.

MDC and Asa, yes we are lucky enough to celebrate two Thanksgivings each year. Here in Canada, it occurs on the second Monday in October. And in the USA, it occurs on the fourth Thursday in November.
In both places, the traditional food selection is identical. No Canadian goose. We had our Thanksgiving dinner this past Sunday and it included turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy, cranberries, asparagus with nuts salad, bruschetta, and cream of asparagus soup ... yum yum. After two helpings, I had no room for desert. Next month, I am looking forward to doing it all again when we visit my sister in the states.

October 16, 2013 - Msg 95018: Howdy, porch. Been busy the past couple of days - finally got to stop and rock for a spell. Maude, glad you had some time with the kids, and it's good to see you. Asa, I'm sorry winter's heading your way. I know it's rough on you, in your line of work. Glad to hear Allison is doing well, but I'm not surprised. Kids are amazing.

Boo, just hang in there. Cooler weather is bound to come your way. It's 65° here, been raining for three days, off and on. Wonderful! My a/c is still turned on, but it's not running, and the house is actually almost too cool. I just don't want to switch over to the furnace yet, but I may have to. Sprinkler is turned off as well, thanks to the rain. My utility bills should look a bit friendlier this time.

I'm looking forward to seeing REV tomorrow evening. Wish the whole porch could be here. Wouldn't we have a grand time though?

Joe was here this morning, and we got five flats of color in the ground. Three flats of pansies, two of snapdragons. It didn't make a whole lot of difference - this yard could swallow thirty flats if I had the money - but it helped. At least there's a bit more color, and in this cool temp and light rain, they'll take off like rockets and be beautiful in about a week. I may add a few more next week - we'll see.

Well, better go feed Tiny Mite. She's been in here hinting about it, and I'm getting a bit hungry myself. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Wow, is it ever beautiful here this morning. It's 49°, clear, no wind, and after all that rain everything is green and fresh, my roses have produced blooms from somewhere, the birds and squirrels are all over the yard, just rejoicing in the beautiful day. I put out some feed for them, and one little squirrel has found it. He's practically rolling in it, he's so happy. The others will find it shortly, and there'll be a turf war, but it won't last long. They squabble, but then they settle down and share.

My window is so dirty! I should have cleaned it before the weather turned so cool. I'll wait until it warms up a bit, then I'll get it done before it gets really cold.

I saw a beautiful sight yesterday. Joe and I were working out back, and suddenly he said, "Look up, look up, quick!" I did, and overhead was a flock of geese, big old things! There must have been at least fifty. They were in a V-formation, but right overhead, the leader suddenly turned aside, the flock followed, and they were just milling around up there, right over my yard. They circled for about a minute, then suddenly one bird broke out of the bunch, and started flying straight south. The others quickly fell into line, in the V-formation, and they flew out of sight. I guess the leader was tired and wanted someone else to take the point. Isn't that amazing? They were so beautiful.

In contrast, on Tuesday I was sitting at a traffic light, facing north, when I saw a tiny thing fluttering along, about thirty feet off the ground, heading due south. When it got near, I could see it was one lone Monarch butterfly! It was just doggedly flying south, all by itself. That tiny, fragile creature was headed for Mexico, through wind and weather and predatory birds, just fluttering on. It's hard to put into words, but there was something very inspiring and encouraging about that little butterfly. I guess he's like the rest of us. He has no idea how long or how difficult his journey might be, but he just keeps flying. He doesn't even really know where he's going, because he's never been there, but when he arrives, he'll know. He'll land, and join the millions of others who have made the same journey, and his journey will be complete.

There's such a wonderful world around us. I really appreciate the change in my circumstances, which has given me the opportunity and the time to observe, and appreciate things like butterflies and migrating geese.

He wasn't planning to be here until late this afternoon, but he decided to drive on in last night, set up, and rest this afternoon. Well, the concert went just great! REV was in fine voice, everyone loved him, as always. He has such a fine talent, and his concerts are always a hit. My friends will ask me during the year whether he's coming in October, and I'm always glad to be able to say that he is. His motorhome is parked on the church lot, and he's all tucked in by now, I'm sure. He got all his equipment out of the church and loaded in the trailer, so he's got nothing to be concerned with tomorrow. I'll pick him up late morning, then we'll pick up Eloise and head out to Roanoke, to have some of Babe's chicken. Afterward, we'll come back here and just relax and visit for the afternoon. Jerry will join us, as well as Dave and Brittney and the boys, and we'll make burgers for dinner. Sounds like a deal to me! This is such fun.

Well, guess I'd better turn in. I need to put away some stuff that's sitting around, and vacuum the living room in the morning. I know REV won't care about any of that, but I do. So, an hour or so in the morning will have things in pretty good shape.

I wish everyone could have been with us this evening. You'd have gotten a real blessing from it. --Romeena

Thanks, Sterling. It was just such a beautiful moment, watching that tiny thing, flying with such determination. A really special blessing.

It's chilly in here, since it's only 58° outside. I've still got my a/c set to cool, but it hasn't run in several days. I'm just enjoying sitting here listening to the sound of silence. I may have to switch over to furnace soon, but I just hate to do it. If I can get through the next couple of hours, the house will warm up a little when the sun gets a little stronger.

Well, I'd better go finish tidying up the house. The kitchen table is still covered with packages, where I've been doing some early shopping. Some of the stuff is for Landry and Hudson, so needs to be put away anyway, and then there are the bags of stuff I bought to build an autumn wreath for the fireplace. I haven't even started making it yet, but the big old bags of silk foliage and flowers are everywhere. Why do I get myself into these projects?!? So - put that stuff up, a quick once-over with the vacuum in the living room, and things will be presentable.

I'll pick REV up about eleven, we'll then pick up Eloise, and off we'll go, out to Roanoke for some of the world's best fried chicken. Then back to Irving, stop at Kroger so I can get the fixings for burgers tonight, and I think REV needs a few things for the motorhome, and then back to the house. Burgers don't take much preparation, so we'll have time to visit, maybe sit out in the back yard a while if it's not too chilly, and just relax. Wish you could all be here.

Well, off I go. That vacuum isn't going to run itself. Wow - wouldn't that be nice! Maybe I should investigate those little Roomba things. I haven't heard anybody indicate that they have one and like it though, so maybe not. Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

Romeena, bird migration has always fascinated me because of the complex navigation methods they use. And what is surprising about the Monarch butterflies is that none of them live long enough to make the round trip. It is somehow passed on across generations.

October 19, 2013 - Msg 95032: Doggone it, G-F, why didn't I think of that? I just got home from taking REV back to his motorhome. He'll be leaving early in the morning, to go to his next concert. We have had such fun. He and Eloise and I went to Babe's, and Brittney met us there. We had a great lunch, good conversation and lots of laughs. Then he and I stopped at the grocery store for stuff for burgers tonight, and came back here to the house. We sat in the sunroom and talked, then went outside where he helped me install a low-voltage globe light that required stronger fingers than mine. We came back inside when Eloise and Jerry arrived, and the guys manned the grill and cooked the burgers. We had angel food cake with strawberries and cream, lots of good conversation. REV seemed to enjoy playing with Toye Starr, and she was obviously smitten from the git-go. She usually takes a while to warm up to men, but she took to him and was in his lap almost immediately. As I recall, she did the same thing last year.

David didn't make it in off a working road trip, but Brittney and the boys came for dinner, and brought Bentley, of course. He took to REV right away, just like Toye Starr. Dogs know a good person when they meet one, apparently. I wish each of you could meet him. You will never meet anyone any nicer, kinder, any easier to be with. I feel as though I've known him all my life. We had a great visit, and I'm already looking forward to next year. God is good.

Well, I think I'll head for the ironing board, and I'm already planning to sleep as late as I want to in the morning. Being retired does have its advantages. Drive carefully tomorrow, REV. Vaya con Dios. Blessings, friends! --Romeena
