events of this past week. BOO- that was indeed my point, especially the lockdown thing! It basically was marshall law going on Thursday, and that was bad enough, but if 2nd ammendment rights were also no longer in place, then everyone except the bad guys would be scard sitting ducks in their homes. It would be interesting to see if gun sales go way up in Boston THIS week!! OK soapbox put away.
On another suject, the internet is AMAZING! I had three things wrong with my 2005 Chevy Pick-Up...tailgate latch broken, bad oil pres sensor, and a split on my driver door armrest. Went to YOUtube, saw how to install all three, bought the parts, and did them today! YT videos walked thru each procees. All made by differnt people, but informative enough to see what to do without breaking darned plactic clips, etc!!

April 21, 2013 - Msg 93229: That they do MDC. It's a cleaner/straighten outer. If you have a Johnstone Supply around your parts, they have em. And I am pretty sure in Arizona you got Johnstone Supply, or someone else of equal nature. I agree, I go to youtube a lot to pick up help on things. But some you have to careful with too. Learned some things about adjusting valves on small engines with OHV's from a fellow on there. And I also agree the events of this past week have opened up a whole lot of eyes concerning our rights to own firearms. It least I hope so.
Oh also MDC, there is a home repair guy by the name of Ron Hazelton. He has or had a show on tv for a number of years called "The House Doctor", and then "House Calls". Anyway, he has a newsletter he sends out each week you can subscribe to for free. Has two or three little videos in it. Very informative stuff. I highly recommend him.

Hope y'all had a good restful Sabbath. Prayers this week is better than last.

April 22, 2013 - Msg 93233: Ha, so you like my highly technical term MDC? Actually I think the one I am talking about may be called a "fin comb" or some such thing. It is a highly used item here in about a month when the cottonwood trees startdropping there cotton. You just comb the stuff out real nice like.
Speaking of such, the next month will find me busy with a/c prep work, as I'm sure it will G-F. Busy time of the year for sure.
And what I meant about being careful on youtube, I was meaning about mis-information that can be on there, not so much about the other stuff. You get my meaning I'm sure. As an example, there was a feller who posted a video explaining all about what different things mean in industrial maintenance. At one point he said HVAC when used in an industrial application was meaning High Voltage Alternating Current. Well that's just plain silly. HVAC of course stands for Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning. He had several other points he made that was not only incorrect, but if done as he said, could be a big safety hazzard.

Well speaking of such, I best get the old body moving. The back is much improved. Hope it stays that way. The last two weeks have been rotten in that respect.

April 22, 2013 - Msg 93234: Good momrning, porch. Beautiful day here today. I am having my cup of coffee and just ventured outside to look at the flowerbeds Bruce and Sean have been working on. They bought a new type of shrub to put across the front...something with dk green leaves and flowers in the spring. Hope we don't kill them. Bruce dug out all the flower beds and mixed in Thelma Lou's old manure, and added potting soil and new red mulch. It looks good now but I don't count my chickens before they hatch around here. I wish there was a way to post a picture here on the porch.

Glad you back is improved, Asa. Rest does wonders but it takes awhile to heal muscle injuries. Don't get in a hurry and strain it again. :)

Hey to REV and SPOT...and anyone else I may have missed. I am pretty sleepy tonight so I am about to turn in. Thought I would check in on the porch and see if anyone was rocking.

I was thinking it might be fun to share what we think are some of the all-time funniest moments in any of the TAGS episodes. I'll start. One of the most hilarious moments for me, is in the Lady Prisoner episode when Otis shows up drunk and wanting to be locked up and Barney and Andy force him out of the courthouse and lock the door. Otis is hollering and banging on the door wanting back in and Andy and Barney decide that one of them should drive him to his house, but neither wants to. They decide to toss a coin (all the while, Otis is still hollering and banging). Barney loses the coin toss and before he can protest much, Andy opens the door and shoves him out. It just looks hilarious the way Barn has his arms crossed over his face and lets out a little scream as you can see Otis' arms coming at him. I always laugh out loud when I see that one! Seems like the funniest scenes usually involve Barney and Otis.

Well...off to bed. See ya'll in the morning with my coffee.

April 23, 2013 - Msg 93244: Good evening, porch. I'm headed for bed as well - Toye Starr has been woofing at me for a little while now. Funniest scene? That's a tough one, there are so many. One that comes immediately to mind, if we're talking about visual comedy, is in "The Cow Thief", as Luke is leading the cow away, and she's high-stepping it in those army shoes. The background music, together with the way that cow is walking, just has me laughing so hard, every time. Great stuff!

Another great scene is when Barney has just acquired his motorcycle, and is standing in front of Andy's desk, methodically putting on all that gear, finishing with the goggles and helmet. Andy is looking at something on the desk, and when he finally looks up, and Barney is standing there so serious, looking like a giant bug - well, that's just genius writing, and genius performance by the actors. They were so good!

Slept well, and now to get some chores done around here. The septic tank lady is coming this morning to do some septic maintenance (yes, we have a septic LADY). I already put in a load of dirty laundry and the kitchen needs some cleaning. Bruce put away the leftovers for me last night but the dirty dishes are still in the sink. :( I was just too tired to do it so it remains to be done this morning. Better get at it.

I need to run some errands, including the grocery store, so probably should get that done before the rain begins. I don't think it's going to be really stormy, though, just wet. There's still a lot of bird traffic out back, and I can see three squirrels. Usually, when it's going to be really stormy, all those little critters disappear into their hidey-holes somewhere, for safety.

April 24, 2013 - Msg 93253: Very cool, MDC. That really brings back memories. I graduated in 1956. Should have been '57, but I finished high school in 3 1/2 years. I was a "mid-termer", and would have graduated in December of '56, which would have been no fun. Basically just pick up a diploma at the principal's office. So I gave up study halls and took courses instead, and had enough credits to graduate in May with the class of '56. That's where my friends were anyway, the kids I hung out with. I was closer to their age, being only 16. The fifties were a wonderful time to be a teenager. I wouldn't trade my generation for anything.

It's COLD here! Supposed to get down in the thirties tonight. That's just ridiculous. I have had the a/c on and had to turn it back to heat about three times so far in the last couple of weeks. Had to do it again today. The heat feels pretty darned good, too! Then we're headed for the 80s in a day or two. Good grief!

Reminded me so much of the things my Dad used to tell me. He was 86 when he died last year and during the last two years of his life he began having flashbacks of things that happened when he was in the Navy during WW2. There were things he told me and there were things that he said he would never tell another soul, and he didn't. So sad.

April 25, 2013 - Msg 93271: Good morning, porch! It's cool and beautiful here in the Dallas area, too. Very nice. Supposed to be stormy tomorrow, but today is beautiful. Robbi has just a little work to get done this morning, I have an appointment for a pacer check at noon, and then we're going to go get some lunch and go to John's garden center. My "herb box" outside the sunroom windows pretty much died out over the winter, and we're going to replant it with some kitchen herbs. I've learned that things planted in containers don't handle cold weather as well as things planted in the ground. I had two kinds of basil, thyme, lemongrass, and a couple of others in there and they're gone. I also had some peppermint, which dropped a runner over the side, took root in the ground, and is now trying to pick up the house. You can't kill that stuff! I have a big rosemary bush in the way-back, and it does okay, but the tender stuff in the box died out. Oh well. I'll plant more.

Where is that Possum anyway? I wanted to ask her if any young'uns from her family are missing. There's a tiny possum that's been coming into the yard every night and poking around. Robbi likes to sit out on the back patio just after dark and watch the stars come out, and the little possum has been coming along the top of the fence and he just perches there, just a few feet from her, and watches her. As long as she makes no moves toward him, he remains. He's very small, not much bigger than a mouse, and we think he's too young to be away from his mama, but we haven't seen her at all. I hope he makes it. He's really pretty cute.

I lost a dear friend today. Rusty had been struggling with health issues related to AIDS for over 10 years. He died at home, alone, in front of his computer. It must have been sudden and that is some comfort. He was only 48. No wife or significant other, no children. He believed in Jesus so he is at peace now.

April 26, 2013 - Msg 93279: Morning friends. Thank you all for the prayers. They are appreciated. It looks like towards the end of next month I'll be having an Ablation procedure done. I have been having more and more occurences of a-fib and a-flutter. Tuesday I spent all day in the E.R. trying to get converted with medication. They finally had to shock me and that got it converted. But the Cardiologist is now suggesting ablation procedure because the events are coming more frequent and getting more difficult to convert back. Still not sure how I feel about it all. The procedure is seemingly small stuff, but is not without it's risks I guess. Anyway, I meet on the 13th for a consultation with the Doctor and a desicion will be meade at that time.

April 26, 2013 - Msg 93281: Hi Asa, good to see you this morning. I know that ablation is pretty common these days and, while no medical procedure is without some risk, it is usually quick and safe. If you got through the shock (cardioversion), then I think the ablation will seem like a piece of cake. My mom had one at age 82 and it was easy for her...hardly took any time at all and she was back home again. My brother and nephew have also had one (my nephew was in his teens...had a cardiac disorder that required it and now he is fine at age 26). It doesn't always work and I don't know the stats for that but your dr should be able to tell you. Medical decisions are tough, aren't they? The risk of the procedure is probably small compared to the risk of stroke that can occur from the a-fib, if it continues. I think you told us you were on blood thinners, right? Some people live in a-fib and never have a problem, though. My dad was one of them...he was in a constant state of a-fib from 1980 (following heart surgery) until his death and never had a problem. He took meds to thin his blood, though. My mom also goes in and out of a-fib and is ok. Do you have dizziness, etc. when you are in it? One thing I can tell you is to avoid caffiene, and if you are a smoker, this would be a good time to consider quiting. Also, take breaks in your day to sit quietly and practice some breathing exercises. Simply get into a comfortable position, close your eyes, try to relax your muscles and breathe in through your nose to the count of 2, then release your breath slowly to the count of four, repeat three or four times. It will decrease your blood pressure and help rid the body of those toxic hormones that cause your heart to work harder. Think good thoughts, take a good multi-vitamin and coQ10 and eat your fruits and veggies (and plenty of water). :) I will pray for your decision, and remember the Lord is going before you and will lead you.

I wish i had a choice about my surgery, but i really don't. It has to be done and as the date approaches, I want to drag my feet and back up! ;) I just have to tell myself that God is in control and that is all that matters. I'll be fine. There is something just so unsettling about losing control and handing yourself over to another person you hardly know (speaking of general anesthesia).

Thank you for those prayers concerning my late friend, MDC. I appreciate it. He was from a very dysfunctional family situation and I know things were not alright between all members of the family so it could be tough for them.

I am NOT looking forward to summer temperatures, either, MDC! I can't believe I am having a total hysterectomy and being plunged into full menopause at the beginning of summer. :( This will be the hottest summer yet for me! ;)

Hey SPOT. I couldn't believe Candice was in the bottom two last night on Idol. I am starting to think she may not win.

I took Sean to see his phych doc yesterday afternoon and the office was so full that we ended up on a small wood bench in the narrow hallway, with little kids playing with legos. This poor doc is the only phychiatrist in Corpus Christi who specializes in phych disorders in children and adolescents and he also sees adults. Needless to say, he is overloaded with patients. It was interesting and there was this little tike with some kind of syndrome but seemed very bright, and his mom and dad were not paying attention and the little guy would lean over to get legos and fall into the toy box head first now and then and have to be pulled out. I kept trying to keep my hand on him when he would go in for more and then he started smiling at me and handing me legos. Now and then the poor dr would squeeze himself down the crowded hallway and step over children on his way but he never passed without a kind word for the children or a pat on the head. He just lit up when he saw them, even under those conditions..the noise and the chaos! I think he is in the right profession. God bless him for it and he has been doing it for 40 years. I just want to hug him every time i see him, bless his heart. It can't be easy and he tends to children in the phych ward at the county hosptial, too, which is about the most heart-rending job possible. I notice he has pictures of Jesus about the office so I suppose the Lord keeps him going and helping so many little ones that need him. I love to see people doing what God sent them to do. :)

They told me if I wait too long the procedure is no longer an option though. So it seems like a no brainer to me to not get er done. I don't look forward to it, but it is what it is huh? My prayers for you for peace as well as you face your surgery. It's always reassuring to hear of people who have had it done and have improved from it. Thanks for those testimonials.

He was about 65 at the time, sailed right through it, and it worked. Prayers for you, friend, for your peace of mind as much as for the procedure.

Boo, I'm sorry about your friend. That's really a shame. No one should have to die alone, but at least it was quick, and we know he's now with the Lord.

It sounds like maybe you've found the right psych doctor for Sean. That can be a real challenge. A psychiatrist can have all the knowledge and expertise in the world, but if personalities don't mesh, there probably won't be a good outcome. I could have a real jerk for a surgeon (I don't) and it wouldn't matter so much, because he would do his thing and that's that. The relationship with a psychiatrist or psychologist is so close and so personal, and is ongoing, so if there's a personality conflict it just about spells doom for the treatment. Sounds like this man would be loved by all.

Boo, please try to stop worrying about the surgery. You're going to be fine, and you'll feel so much better that you'll wonder why you didn't do it a long time ago. As for being thrown into instant menopause - don't worry, they've got a program for that! You'll be started on hormones before you ever leave the hospital, and they work. Don't worry - they've gotcha covered, baby!

There is a little lost parakeet flying around in my back yard! He's beautiful, white with little gray dappled spots and black bars on his wings. I first saw him when he made a fast flying trip through the yard. His color caught my eye first, and then I recognized the characteristic flight of a parakeet. They always fly with their tail tucked downward, unless they're really at high speed to escape a predatory bird or something. When he flew back into the yard and landed on top of my arbor, I got a good look at him, and he's so pretty. I'm going to try to locate a cage and see if I can entice him in. He'll probably be okay for the summer, but he'd never survive the winter. Poor little lost baby. If I catch him, I think I'll name him Perdido (the lost one). Or Perdida if it turns out to be a female. Or maybe Viajero (the traveler), but I think that's too hard to say.

April 26, 2013 - Msg 93284: Thanks, Ro...in my heart i know I will be fine but now and then, being a nurse, complications pop into my mind or I start wondering just how bad that pain will be afterward and it's not really the pain I fear but the need for pain meds that will make me sick. Fortunately my doctor is a good one and is also a friend that I am very comfortable with and will ask for what I need/don't need. Of course sometimes she has this mother hen mentality that wants to tell me what to do and that's that, but she will listen. She's a good girl with tons of experience with this sort of thing. I will also be having the surgery in the hospital I used to work in so maybe I will see some familiar faces. It is good to be in familiar surroundings at a time like that. I already know where everything is. When Sean and Erin were born there (on the same floor i will be on, actually), I felt at home and that lessened the stress, considerably. You know, I often get this mental image of something you said the other day about the pt my age who was up and at the nurses desk, doing great, and that encourages me..I am determined for that to be ME. :)

Poor little parakeet! I sure hope you can catch him. We had a parakeet when i was a kid and he got out of his cage once and flew out an open door. I chased that bird all over the neighborhood with the cage in my hand. I was finally able to get ahold of him by climbing a tree in a yard a block away and some old woman came out and yelled at me for being on her property! Grumpy. I got him, though.

April 26, 2013 - Msg 93289: Hey, Mr. Tom. I'm sorry you're having problems keeping your yard mowed and neat. It's a big job, for sure. I must have misled you along the way, because the man who does my yard doesn't just do it as a favor. I pay him for what he does - it's how he makes a living. He does several yards on my street. What you may be remembering is something I might have said about Joe or Ted. Joe is the landscaper who built my flowerbeds when I first began to landscape this place. He and his wife have become my good friends, and sometimes when he's in the area, he'll drop by to check on something he planted earlier or some such, and sometimes will do a little bit back there that he doesn't charge me for. Ted, my handyman friend, will sometimes do little quick jobs and doesn't charge me, but if it's something that takes him more than a few minutes, he will, and he should.

Boo's question about the church is a good one. Our church has "Great Days of Service" about three times a year, and on those days, teams meet at the church and go out to work on homes and yards for people who have needs and have requested help. They have built wheelchair tamps, repaired roofs, done minor plumbing, and have cleaned up a lot of yards. You might find help from something like that.

The little parakeet is still hanging around. We put some seed out on the walkway, and he came in and had a little party. I wish I had a cage, because I feel pretty sure he'd go into it, but I hate to buy a cage for a bird that might just ignore it. Guess we;ll see what tomorrow brings. Maybe we can catch him by some other means. If we do, I think he would have a home with Robbi. She had a parakeet once, adorable little bird, very smart and talkative, and I think she'd like to have another one.

ASA- I am on blood thinner for my a-fib. First diagnosed in 1895, so it is too late to try ablation, so says my cardio doc. I do OK in a-fib, but do tire more quickly, and get hot quickly when doing physical work. Otherwise I'm good. So I would suggest that you do the ablation. Normal sinus rhythm is much better! ha

Thanks for all the prayers and advice. I know that you were in a-fib MDC. I'm glad you are able to enjoy a good quality of life despite it. You made me chuckle with the 1895 post. :) I'm pretty much inclined to proceed with it, unless the Doctor says something when we consult with him on the 13th to change my thinking. I just don't know how my back is going to handle lying still for 8 hours. That could be a problem. 4 hours or so for the procedure, and then 4 hours lying still for the groin incision to mend. My back is already aching just thinking about it.

I hadn't heard about Sidney Freeman passing. I was surprised he was that old.

Ro, please use your tweezers when you feed that bird. You remember what Barney said about that, don't you?

I slept late this morning, and it sure did feel good. Dave and Brittney and the boys stayed until after midnight last night, and we had a good time. I've been at my window now for about fifteen minutes, and haven't seen the parakeet. Robbi is sitting out on the back patio, I hope she's seen him. Such a tiny little traveler, in such a big world. I doubt that he's got much experience in avoiding predators, poor little guy.

Asa, I understand your concerns about your back holding up for that procedure. I have trouble just getting out of the dentist's chair, if I'm there more than a few minutes. I've never assisted with an ablation, so am not sure what their requirements are, but I have cared for patients afterward, in that period of time when the entry point is sealing itself. I recall that the patient was allowed to have a pillow under the opposite knee. The leg where the entry was made has to remain still and straight, but we were allowed to put one pillow under the other knee. It helps. Ask your doctor about it. Try it yourself. Lie down flat on your back, and you'll soon feel that tightening and "locking down" feeling in your lower back. Then just lift one knee about six inches and feel the difference. Of course, you'd get tired of holding it up, so you'd want the pillow to support that knee over a period of time.

Well, got to get my hair cut today, so need shampoo it. After my neck surgery, I just about can't tolerate that shampoo bowl at the salon. Waaay uncomfortable! So, I just wash it myself and Cheryl wets it down again before she cuts it. It's just as well. The shampoo girl never really got it clean anyway, She has a very gentle touch, and I prefer someone that scrubs!

Oh, there's the parakeet! Poor little feller! I'm sure h e's enjoying his freedom, and flying around out there with the big birds, but if he's not predator-wise, he'll be some cat's lunch. If he makes it through the summer, he'll never survive the winter. They're tropical birds, and our winter, even though it's relatively mild, would be too much for him. 'd much prefer to catch him and give him a home. Actually, Robbi wants him, and would give him a wonderful home. I told her we might have to flip a coin for him!

April 27, 2013 - Msg 93300: Good evening, porch. Yes, I think I'm going to miss Alan Arbus. I don't know what the man was actually like, but after seeing him on a couple of "MASH" reunions, it seemed to me that he was really a nice guy. Same could be said for Jamie Farr.

G-F, if you like to watch the squirrels play, here's an idea. You may already have this, but if not, try it. Get some bungee cord and a couple of large eyebolts. Make sure the bungee isn't too tight, it should stretch easily. Attach the bolts to one end of the cord, and then hang the cord from a limb, the bottom of a feeder, or whatever will put it about two feet off the ground. Then screw the eyebolts into the ends of a couple of ears of dried corn. You can do just one if you prefer. Just make sure that after the corn is attached, the ears are high enough off the ground to cause a squirrel to have to jump to catch it. This, of course, sends him bouncing and sprong-ing all over the place and it's just hilarious. They hold on for dear life, and will be trying to eat the kernels even as the cob is still bouncing. Lots of fun! I had one little squirrel a couple of years ago, who came just for the ride. The ears of corn were completely stripped and dry, but he'd jump up and make the thing bounce, then just ride it until it stopped bouncing, then he'd hop off. You could almost hear him saying "Wheeeee!" So funny!

Just when you think you'll make it thru ok, one of those flash-back memories with your daughter sneaks up and knocks ya down a peg.
