HI ALL, just a quick hello tonight. Dad was well enuf today to go
to a WWII airplane showing at an airport about two miles from his new place. They had a B-17, B-29, P-51, P-40, C-47, and a few others. He was in hog heaven, especially when they started the engines of a few and took off. The sounds and smells brought
back a lot of memories for him!
He wore his veteran's cap and got a lot of thank yous and firm handshakes! Very cool. For those with FB, I'll post some photos there.
God bless,

Morning all.
Well MDC, I see you swept up for us. Good man. I can only imagine the feelings your Dad must have felt seeing, listening, and smelling them vintage planes. Bless his heart, and bless your heart for being such a good son. My prayer is that my children will tend to me as well as you do your Dad, should I live that long. I think they will. Both Daughters are "Daddy's girls" and look after me pretty good now.
How is Erin doing Boo? Did her vertigo go away? I hope so.
Well I started to notice a pain in my left foot yesterday that concerned me. By bedtime it was hurting pretty good. I'm pretty sure it's another gout flare. Really disappointing because all my previous attacks have been in my right ankle that I broke pretty bad about 20 years ago. So to get it now in my left foot/ankle is frustrating. Especially seeings how I've been taking my medicine consitently now for several weeks. So I had to take my gout clearing medicine last night. It's still quite sore this morning, but at least I am able to walk on it, albeit with a limp. I just hope this medicine will knock it out fast. With spring just about here, I have a ton of yard work to do. Finally seeing some brown grass as the snow continues to melt away. Got up to 60 yestrerday. Haven't seen 60 for several months. Awesome!
G-F, The boiler inspection went without a hitch buddy. Took all of 30 seconds and he was good with it. Right on. Didn't even have to waste a biscuit on him. :) Now I have a couple of dozen back flow preventers I have to test and certify in the next month. Oh joy!
Well better get cracking and quit talking about it.
Prayers friends.

Erin is doing just fine, thanks ASA. I am very sorry to hear about your attack of gout. Prayers for you. Glad your weather is warming up...maybe that will help the pain in your foot.
Woke up too early this morning and have been trying to get some chores done while holding my eye lids open. ;) Have a hair appointment today at 1 and I can't tell you how I hate to have my hair colored and cut. I want to go back to my natural color (which now would be brown and gray) but Bruce like blondes from a bottle, darn it. At my age, I don't know why it even matters. I don't complain about his bald head.;)
Well, better go have another cup of coffee and check on Erin's progress. I think I mentioned we started a new online curriculum and we are at day 4 and she still loves it..and so do I. It does all the record keeping for me and even provides the tests and quizes to be sure everything is progressing as it should. This program only goes through 8th grade, unfortunately but that still gives me two more years to use it. I even enjoy previewing the lessons because they really are fun and interesting.
Better git!

Good morning, porch! Been up and at 'em since a little before eight. Took Toye Starr to Dr. Mike to have her nails trimmed. I know - really dumb, but I'm just too chicken to do it myself. While there, I saw a demonstration of why I like Dr. Mike and will always choose him to care for my little girl. A young couple brought their dog in, big dog, about 40 pounds or so. It was bleeding from its mouth and nose, and was obviously almost dead. They said "It started this morning, like you said it might." I gathered from that comment that this was an ongoing thing and was expected. Dr. Mike said, "Well, let's get it over with" and took them to the back room. In a few minutes, the people came out, with the girl crying and the man looking grim, and walked out to their car. Dr. Mike followed in just a minute, carrying the dog, wrapped in a blanket. He put it in their car, shook hands with the man and gave the girl a big old bear hug, and they left. When Dr. Mike came back in, he had tears in his eyes. He's a good man, a very competent vet, and I know my beloved pets are safe in his hands. He has eased me through the loss of several little friends, including a little crippled squirrel that belonged to my parents. He was especially kind when we lost Sugarplum, and I needed that kindness that day. I still miss that little girl.
If Dale had lived, tomorrow would be our 55th wedding anniversary. That's a long time. I can't believe he's been gone almost seventeen years, but he has. It still seems like yesterday at times, and like a lifetime at other times. What a blessing it is to know that it's not forever, that I will see him again one day. I don't know what our relationship with our loved ones will be in heaven, but I do know it will be even better than what we knew here, so it has to be wonderful. I like to fantasize about sitting around on a porch and talking with parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and of course Dale, but it probably won't be that way. It doesn't matter. Whatever God has in store for us is going to be beyond our wildest dreams.
Well, I'd better get busy. Still have a little laundry to do, the kitchen is a mess, and I need to decide what clothes to take with me tomorrow. Eloise and I are leaving in the morning for Fredericksburg, will come home Sunday evening. We'll see the play with Heather and Travis on Saturday night, and just hang out the rest of the time. Toye Starr will play with her canine cousins, and with my little five-year-old grandson, and will have a great time. Should be a pleasant weekend, although thunderstorms are predicted. Oh well. We need the rain.
Asa, I hope the gout monster turns you loose pretty quick. Sorry you're having to deal with that. Miserable stuff!
Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

Good Friday morning porch friends.
Romeena, happy and safe travels for you today, and happy Anniversary to you and Dale. I know he is with you in spirit this day and always, and what a special blessing it is to know that you will be reunited in His time. I pray you will be lifted up this day as I'm sure your memories will be extra close to the surface as you remember days gone by.
Boo, I'll include Candy on my prayer list for sure. How scary. I was just reading that Valerie Harper (Rhoda Morgenstern) was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and has been given 3 months to live. I really enjoyed her on the Mary Tyler Moore show, and then on her own spin-off. Prayers for her as well.
I like your thinking MDC, about "Heavenly Porch Angels" abiding with us. I do believe you're right. And am glad to hear your Dad is settling in to his new home well.
Spot, nice of you and Boo to buy breakfast. I got a powerful hunger this morning, so be warned you two.
Very happy to say my foot is feeling very much improved today. Was really struggling with it yesterday to even walk much. But today it feels almost 100%. Thank you for the prayers. They were and are appreciated.

Got to go get gasoline, then pick up Eloise, and away we go!! Thanks for your good wishes, and travel-prayers, folks. I wish there was some way to truly express what you all mean to me.
So glad your foot is better, Asa, and thank you for the special words about Dale. Yes, this trip will be a little bit bittersweet, because I know how proud he would be of his daughter and grandson. But like you said, I love to think that he's nearby. Sometimes I can just feel his presence.
MDC, I love the concept of "porch angels." What a thought! Who is to say they aren't with us, and what a comforting thought. Thank you for that. I'm glad your dad is doing so well.
Boo, prayers indeed for your friend Candy. Let's all pray for a good outcome, a benign, removable tumor and a quick recovery. Bless her little heart, and her family as well. They must be so scared!
OK, friends - away we go, if I can catch this little bouncing, excited furkid. I'll just go to the door, and she'll follow, get close to me and turn her back end toward me. This is her way of saying "Pick me up!" She's done that since she was a little puppy. Hard to resist, let me tell you, even when picking her up isn't in my plan.

Been a busy day. I went with St. Susan and some other volunteers to had out food for the salvation army. We go to a very depressed area in a small town near here, to the little park there and give out boxes of food from the food bank. We also had a cookout for them and a moon jump for the kids. I had such a wonderful time just hanging out with the local folks there and talking, as well as the actual work involved. It is just a great time.
Well, plenty to do and wish I could take a nap...Zach called and he is in town from Baylor this week and wants to visit today so I just had a cup of coffee and will go get the toothpicks to prop my eyelids up.

Snow should be gone.... unless we get more, which we will. But if I can aereate it, dethatch it, and get some nitrogen on it before it storms again, it should really get thing kick started. Also need to prune my peach tree this week. A little late doing it this year, but I didn't feel like wading through 2 feet of snow to do it back in February when I typically do it.

Good evening, porch! Eloise and I got home about 5:30 from Fredericksburg, and it's good to be back at my window. We had an absolutely wonderful time, and the play was a sold-out smash. Of course, "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" is a great play anyway, and the casting was perfect. Heather was Domina, the domineering, shrewish wife of Senex, a wealthy but henpecked Roman citizen. Travis was Hero, their young, innocent but interested, son. Heather was hilarious. She had padded her abdomen and backside with pillows, inside a spandex bodysuit, so it all stayed in place. She had practiced a waddling, bustling gait, and gave the perfect impression of a busybody, spoiled rich woman. I had not heard her sing in quite a while, and was amazed at how powerful and strong her voice is. Of course, in a play like this, the music is usually part of the dialog, and she managed to blend it perfectly, putting the shrewish touches in and making it sound like a tirade, and at the same time maintaining the beauty of her voice. I don't know how she did it. Travis can switch from a rich baritone to a sweet, soft tenor/boy soprano sound that's just downright charming. He's only 18, and that voice is going to do nothing but get better.
If you know the play at all, you'll remember when Lycus, the procurer of female "courtesans" is bringing out his stable of girls, for Hero's approval. Travis's expression, as the girls danced and displayed their "charms" for him, was priceless. The innocent boy is fascinated but terrified by the girls, so just keeps rejecting them one by one.
Then there is Pseudolus, Hero's personal slave, and Hysterium, the household's slave-in-chief. These roles were played by two superbly talented young men, with more energy than an electric chihuahua, especially Hysterium. He has all sorts of subterfuge going on, much of which could result in serious consequences. The frantic chases, the switching of plans when a new obstacle appears, and their portrayal of terror when about to be caught - well, I could keep going. It was two hours of hilarious mayhem, and I wish you could all have seen it. Heather is a more seasoned performer, having in been in quite a few productions over the past twelve years or so, but this was Travis's third play, other than school stuff. In his first play with the theater company, he was only about ten, so this is really his second serious part. He's very good, and I was so proud of both of them.
Well, Toye Starr (a pooped pup), is looking for some dinner, and come to think of it, I'm a little hungry to. Guess I'll go feed us, then sit back and relax for a while. It's a four and a half hour drive, but took five hours because we made two short stops. I'm tired! Blessings, everyone! --Romeena
March 10, 2013 - Msg 92723:
Oh, Asa, while you're working on that lawn, be sure to put some dry molasses on it. With that, you might not even need the nitrogen, though it probably won't hurt. Dry molasses works wonders, feeds the lawn, enriches the soil, encourages healthy microbial action in the soil, and helps to control ants, fleas, termites and lots of unwanted things. March 11, 2013 - Msg 92730:
I had a wonderful time, Mr. Tom. It's always fun seeing my daughters and their families. I'm blessed with two great sons-in-law, and of course the grandkids are just the best. Robbi made a wonderful supper for us Friday evening and Heather cooked a great breakfast Saturday morning. Richard's mom, Barbara, had a little gathering at her country home Saturday before the play, and had some great food there, so we didn't go hungry. In addition, when we got to our room at the Holiday (which my grandson manages) Robbi and Richard had left an "Easter basket" for us, which contained all sorts of snack crackers, tea, cookies and nuts, so we had "nibbles" whenever we were at the motel. We didn't spend much time there, though - too much going on.
Oh, I have to share this. Toye Starr stayed at Robbi's house while we went to the play. I won't leave her at the motel when I'm not there. Anyway, Robbi has a huge golden retriever, named Whoozit, who is just a sweet old lovey. She wouldn't hurt Toye Starr for anything. Starr made sure of it, though. When we first got there, Starr was in my lap and Whoozie came over to say hello. She reached her nose toward Starr, and the little brat bristled up and made a tiny snap in Whoozie's direction. That sweet dog took a step backward, ducked her head and clearly was saying "Yes, ma'am, anything you say!" She is so polite and kind, and Starr was so bratty. Anyway, we left them together. I had no fear of Whoozie bothering her at all.
When we got home, no Starr at the door to meet me! Unusual. I walked into the living room, and there was Starr, on the sofa, where she had obviously spent the evening. She had jumped up there, and then was afraid to get down. After she jumped to the polished concrete floor at David's house and cracked her chin, she has been afraid to jump down onto anything but carpet, and Robbi has wooden floors. So, the little dummy got up there and then couldn't get down. She was really glad to see me, and when I put her down, she made a beeline for her piddle pad. Little doofus.
Well, I'd better get busy. A nurse friend is coming by for breakfast in the morning after she gets off work, and my kitchen and sunroom look like they exploded. I've got some tidying up to do. Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

March 12, 2013 - Msg 92737:
Hey, I made chicken and rice today but I didn't use wings. It was a simple recipe that Asa might like. You just mix up 2 cups of uncooked minute rice, 1 3/4 cups of water or chicken broth, 1 can of cream of mushroom, 1 can of cream of chicken soup, and 2 packages of Lipton onion soup mix. Put it in a 9x13 baking pan, and then lay your uncooked chicken on top of that, salt and pepper the chicken and then cook it all in a 350 degree oven for an hour...if the chicken contains bones, it may take longer..just test for doneness and cover with foil until the last 15 minutes of cook time. Mine turned out good and Erin really loved it. Poor thing is battling a heck of a cold but polished off plenty of chicken and rice tonight.
Better get to bed...daylight savings time is kickin' my backside.

Aunt Bee cuts the pie, and goes to put it on a plate that isn't there. Andy looks and smiles at her, and asks her if she's a "little flustered". I have always thought it was a boo boo, but the way Andy handled it so smooth, and maybe because of tight filming schedules, it was left in. t my thoughts on it.
Ro. I might try that Mollasses. Where do you get it from? And what rate is it applied?
Lucy, yea, my Uric acid levels are a bit high, and there are certain foods I shy away from that are supposed to help. But it seems nothing much really seems to change it.
Well I better get moving. Busy time of the year getting everything ready for spring and summer, and all the winter stuff put away. Am I right G-F?
Prayers for all.

Good morning, porch! I've been up since 6 - very early for me. One of the advantages of being semi-retired is getting to stay up late and sleep late. I wanted to have some pancakes ready for my friend when she got here. We had a little breakfast and a nice visit, and she just left. She's a lovely person, I really like her and miss working with her. She's Nigerian, but was educated here. She's smart, and she's wise, a devoted Christian and a good friend.
Asa, you should be able to get dry molasses at any garden center, and as far as the application rate, there are instructions on the bag. I can just about promise you - if you use it, you'll be glad you did. One of the first things you'll notice is an increase in the earthworm population, which of course is a cardinal sign of healthy soil. I don't put any chemical fertilizers or herbicides on my yard. We use dry molasses and corn gluten meal. Once in a while, I'll very sparingly use a little RoundUp. Those little pecan trees pop up everywhere, thanks to Mr. Bushytail and his nut-burying practices. Once a pecan tree is big enough to be noticed in the garden, it's too big to pull up. You have to dig them up, because the taproot is about twice as long as the part that's above ground. If you break them off, they just come back, usually with two shoots. So, a little RoundUp drizzled on the leaves kills the root and the problem is solved, without digging a two-foot hole. Other than that, it's all organic around here.
It's absolutely gorgeous here. Chilly, but so pretty, and not too cold if you stay in the sun. The sky is a brilliant blue, and there's a very light breeze. Tulips are up and blooming so nicely now, and the snapdragons are really starting to put on a show. Daffodils are popping, the azalea has started, and iris buds are rising, with a few already opening. I just love it! Still no leaves on the mesquites, though, so anything can happen.
Well, I'm pooped. I didn't go to bed until three last night, then up at six, and I'm ready for a little nap. So is Toye Starr. I had to drag her out of bed at six, I think she thought I had lost my mind. She literally tried to get away from me and burrow back in, but I put her on the floor and she can't get up on the bed. So, she moped around here, all tousled and sleepy-eyed for about half an hour before she finally woke up good. Funny little thing.
Blessings, friends! --Romeena

I still have not used the dry molasses. Every year I say I'm going to get some but just never do. I need to do it.
Well gang I'll check back later. You all have a very blessed day!

Hi All.
THIS TIME OF YEAR
It's nice to use this time of year
To let those that I hold so dear,
Just know I often think of them-
How much it means to call them friend.
My prayer is that they willbe blessed;
God guiding as the years progress;
How wonderful to know that He
Is watching over them and me.
My heart is full of love for all,
From oldest to the very small;
Yes, it is nice this time of year
To think of others far and near.

My goodness, Lucy. Seems like you just can't get a break for anything. I'm so sorry, Will definitely keep you in my prayers.
I stopped at John's garden center on my way home from rehab today, got just one flat of snapdragons. Usually I would get several flats, but I knew I couldn't plant them, so just got what I thought I could handle. I had planted half of them, and was about to have to quit. However, my landscaper friend Joe was across the street, designing a layout for my neighbor, and he came over. He took the plants from me, and asked where I wanted them! Then he proceeded to plant them for me. There will be no bill for that. What a good friend!
The pond water is crystal clear, and so pretty. The water lilies are sending up lily pads, and there will be flowers appearing soon. However, there's always a fly in the ointment, it seems. The string algae is in full swing, waving in long strands from the sides of the pond. I pull off what I can, but it needs to be scraped off, and that's risky, because it can damage the rubber liner. I think there's a leak somewhere anyway, because the water level has dropped two inches in two days, and that's waaay more than evaporation would do. This could be a problem. The leak is most likely in the very bottom, where the pond-cleaner person walks in it now and then. She has to get in there to do some of the things she does, and if there's a root or a stone or something beneath the liner, and she steps on it, it could puncture the rubber. Leaks can be patched, but finding them is the problem. Well, if that's the worst thing I have to deal with, I will not complain.
Guess I'll go rustle up some supper. I have some pasta, and a jar of spaghetti sauce. Sounds like a quick solution to me. I also have a little packet of Italian herbs to be mixed in olive oil for dipping. I don't have any scone-type bread, but I do have a small can of biscuits. I don't see why that wouldn't work in a pinch. I love bread dipped in herb-y olive oil. Wish I had some young spring greens, but I don't. I have a little iceberg lettuce, though, and it will do nicely. Wow, I'm getting hungry just talking about it. See you folks later! --Romeena

Well, of all the nerve! I just cleaned the birdbath out earlier, and now it's going to be all nasty again. Yesterday I had pancake batter left over, so I baked it - made about six small pancakes. I let them dry out, then put them out on the feeding stones for the birds. A big old male grackle, with his shiny boat-tail, just flew in and picked up one of those cakes, carried it to the birdbath and dropped it in. Now he's pecking the softened pieces out of the water, and no doubt scattering more than he eats. I'll forgive him, though. He's got a crippled leg, and it's hard for him to fight for food with the other birds. He's got the pancake stash to himself right now, and if he likes them "dunked", well, I guess it's okay. Gotta cut him a little slack. --Romeena

Morning Porch.
Sounds like a lot of prayers needed this morning. Prayers for Lucy and her family, for Tom and the difficult task of going through your stepdads things. I know how big a challange that is buddy. And for Boo's friend, Candy, that she will continue to get better and that the tumor is benign. And prayers for all the folks who need them, but have not asked for them. You know who you are. :)
Well the last of the snow out back has finally melted away. So let the games begin! Fired up the rider last week and got it ready for the season. I hope it will last. It's getting kinda old and cranky, a lot like it's owner. I have a dethatcher I drag around behind, and then an aerater I drag behind, so it's gonna get a good workout this Saturday.
Finished pruning my peach tree yesterday finally. Now I need to till up the garden and maybe get some early stuff planted. They don't turn on our secondary water for another month yet, so best not get to carried away.
Better get rolling I reckon.

Sean is having a rough day. It seems some of his Tourette symptoms are returning and it seems to be due to the newest medication. We have an appointment a week from today. Please Lord, let him get what he needs! He is down also because his girlfriend told him today that her parents are not happy that she is in a relationship with him because of his challenges. They want her with someone who is better educated and they are angry with us, as his parents, because of it. They have no idea what we go through or have gone through trying to help Sean. They have a daughter who is a straight A student and has not had any kind of disability. I can just blow it off but I know it hurt Sean. He thought her parents liked him. Sometimes it is so hard to have kids with special needs like Sean. They live with so much rejection and you have to watch it happen. You can't fix their problems for them you can just lend support. I try to say all the right things but so many days it seems like the words just fall flat. I know God is in control and I have a sense that the Lord is trying to do a work in Sean right now...all of this can be used to accomplish the Lord's purposes for Sean. Folks, I love that boy so. You all would, too if you knew him. He is the sweetest, kindest soul...the kind you really hate to see get hurt. They have to be ready for life, though, and life is not easy.
Well, better go finish dinner. I just needed to come here to the porch and spend a little time with my porch family. It really helps. Sometimes even though I am here alone typing these words, its like I can feel the love and support coming from all of you. :)

Oh, Boo. My heart breaks for you, and for Sean. I know he's all grown up now, but I remember the sweet little boy I met in Fredericksburg years ago, and what a good little guy he was then. I know that sweetness remains, and with maturity will become the foundation of a kind and gentle man, a man you can be proud of. This girl will be one of many before he finds his soul's mate. There will be others, and one of them will be the right one, the one God has for him, and God will work out the details. Parental objections and all will either not exist, or won't matter to her. I know Sean has had his challenges, and it's natural to feel like those challenges are the problem, but trust me. Challenges or not, girlfriends come and go. I raised two boys, and they both got their little hearts broken a time or two, and then one day, the right girl appeared and the rest is history. Sean loves God, and God loves Sean, and it will all be fine one day.
I just got home from my SS teacher's house - a bunch of us met there and made the cutest little rabbits, using bathroom tissue rolls, covered with pretty paper, and we attached big ears and feet, eyes, noses and whiskers, and filled them with candy. These will be taken to members who are in nursing homes, or are homebound. We had fun, and the little rabbits will make a cute gift - nothing spectacular, but made with love. I think we made about thirty.
My little firefly lights in the back yard are so pretty. They're woven through the eleagnus hedge that grows flat to the fence, and they twinkle in and out, fading and brightening, for all the world like fireflies. Charming, and fun. I'm not sure how they work, because they twinkle randomly, not the whole string at once. I think I've about got all the lights I need in the back now, and the front needs maybe one more. Ted is going to run some low voltage wire down the sides of the house, and I'll put either some wall-washers or pathway lights along there, and then I'll be done. The only other thing I want is more light around the pond, and that's easy. The line is there, I just need to get a couple of spotlights for the fountain. I've tried underwater lighting, and it's beautiful, but only lasts a few months, then corrodes and dies. It's not cheap, and I can't keep replacing it, so it's off my list. The spots will work. Everything is cheaper now since I discovered I can order replacement bulbs from Amazon for about a third of what they cost at Lowe's. Makes a big difference.
Well, I think I'm off to bed. It's been a long day, and I have rehab in the morning. Blessings, friends! --Romeena
