No, G-F, I won't getting Bernie snipped. He needs all his testosterone to care for the hens. He has been the perfect gentleman, lately. I can always go right into the pen and gather eggs and he never shows me any aggression. I try to take treats of old bread and such often and that makes him much more welcoming.

Poor Ollie...when we picked him up, here came the vet tech dragging him across the linoleum again. You just have to picture this dog sitting down with the breaks on and the tech pulling him across the floor by his halter and leash. So funny-looking. He was quite traumatized by the whole thing, it seems. He whimpered and cried all the way home in the car and I was afraid he was in pain, but once he got home he seemed fine. It was a fairly small incision but I guess it might be painful to a dog. I did pay some extra to have them give him a pain shot afterward. I felt kinda sorry for him on the way home, though. All's well that ends well.

Well, it was back to near 90 degrees here today and will be for at least a week...don't know when we will have another cool spell.

Pappabear, so glad to see ya! I would say don't be such s stranger now, but that would be a bit black kettle of me.

October 10, 2012 - Msg 90615: Well, it was good to hear from Lucy Matthews, even if it was a short visit. Come back soon, honey!

Well, I got a bit of irritating news this morning. My CPA called to tell me that my tax return, which he filed electronically last week, was rejected. Yes, I know it was late, but they owe me, so no interest or penalties involved. Anyway, they rejected it because another return had already been filed and paid out under my SS#! The CPA believes it's not an identity theft thing. I agree with him, and so does my banker, but I still talked with the bank, credit card folks, and the credit bureau. It seems that the big thing these days is for "undocumented workers", to use the PC term, to just make up a SS# out of the air and give it to an employer, so they can be hired. Since they are generally paid modestly, and have a house full of kids, they get most if not all of it back when they file. They tend to file as soon as they can, in order to beat the real holder of the number to the punch. They won't use the same number twice, but will change jobs and make up another number for the following year. Evidently the IRS goes by the SS# and ignores the name on the return, which is criminally stupid, in my opinion. So, the "undocumented worker" has his money, and in the meantime, it could take as long as a YEAR for mine to be available to me. The burden of proof lies upon me, evidently.

The CPA says he sees this all the time, the CPA at the bank says he's working on six similar cases right now, and my banker says the same thing happened to her son, who filed in early April. He still doesn't have his money. Evidently these people jump in there very early in the year.

I don't fully blame the workers. I agree they shouldn't be here, in general. However, I know some of them personally, and the ones I know are decent folk who are just hoping for a better life. That's hard to hate. Our government has done nothing to secure the borders, punishes the INS when they try to do something, and refuses to make any effort to locate and deport these people. At the same time, they crack down on employers who hire them. So, here's a dad with several little hungry kids, can't get a job because he has no SS#, no money to return home, and no job there if he did. So, he stays here and gets creative. Makes up a number, the employer is happy and thinks (maybe) he's legal, the guy works and gets paid, his kids eat, and once a year he gets a bonus when his tax refund comes back. Meantime, I'm sitting here, having lived on 60% of my pay since June, checkbook looking very skinny, and I can't get what's legally mine. What a mess.

The CPA says the IRS is working on a plan to have each taxpayer use a PIN, which will be associated with their account, and nothing else. When a worker makes up a number, he'll have to make up a pin too, and the odds of him hitting the same numbers as the ones tied to that SS# are beyond astronomical. Now that all sounds as smart as can be, but I have one question. Why do we need a PIN? What's wrong with using our NAME? The guy is making up numbers, but he doesn't know whose it is. If they'd just check the names, they'd catch the fraud. Good grief. Granted, some people may be skimming SS#s and the associated name, and that's where a PIN would be useful, but that doesn't seem to be what's happening in the majority of cases.

My CPA is doing all he can, and he now has my POA for anything tax related, so he can go after it, but I'm not going to just sit on my hands. Early in the morning, when the agents are fresh, I'm calling the IRS in Austin, and am going to work my way through the worker bees until I hit somebody with some authority. Then I'm going to insist upon an explanation of why someone was able to use my SS# with a different name, and how long it will take to resolve the situation. I'm going to insist that they pull up the return for 2010 under my SS# and tell me what name is on it. I will have the return in front of me, and will be able to answer and match up anything on it, to prove that I'm me. I can go back seven years, if they want to. Then I'm going to ask again how long it will take to get my refund, deposited to the same bank account it went into last year. No, I don't expect any miracles, but I do hope it will give them something to think about.

OK, there goes the soapbox. I'll drag it out again in the morning, when I call the IRS. --Romeena

October 11, 2012 - Msg 90616:
RO, and what you say above is exactly why E-Verify is a JOKE my friend! All it looks for is a good number,
which nowadays can be just about anything, and it
does NOT match the name to the number. How STUPID! Billions wasted on this system! All the IRS has to do is to enhance the present system to match number with a NAME and no pins would be needed. For pete's sake, they have no fly lists, they have IP numbers to your name and address on our computers, but they cant bring up a name with a number in the e-verify system? I smell a big rat.
There you go from another border state dweller, who also sees this all the time, but who isnt quite as sympathetic. (Sorry)
OK, I'll slide my soapbox back under the porch.
Also, good luck with the IRS on the PHONE, especially if you get one of the 16,000 greenhorns just waiting for OC to kick in! Personally, I have always had to go physically to the local IRS office to get any results.
Almost like a hippa thing, they want to SEE you.
I know, they sent a refund to the yahoo using your number, but you have to go down and show them YOU in the flesh.
Well, with all that, pleasant dreams, and prayers,
MDC (:

October 11, 2012 - Msg 90617: Thanks, MDC. Actually, I'm not terribly sympathetic either, not generally speaking. I've just had the opportunity to get well acquainted with an "undocumented worker" and his wife, who happens to have her papers. They're kind people, hard working, church-going and he has told me many times how much he would like to get legal and even become a citizen. Unfortunately, that would require a return to Mexico, a two-year wait down there, during which he would not see his family. Also, the two-year wait is just to be allowed to apply. After that, it could be five to seven years before he would be allowed back in legally. The applications and subsequent hearings and processing can cost thousands, which of course he does not have. There has to be a better way. As I said, on the surface of it, I want something done about illegal immigration. However, put a face with it, or faces (his little girls are so cute!) and get to know the people behind those faces, and it gets tough. I wish I knew the answer. What we're doing certainly isn't working.

As for the IRS, when have they EVER shown good sense? The whole system is so ridiculous. I'm sure I'll get absolutely nowhere tomorrow on the phone, but I'm still going to amuse myself by trying. I've got nothing else to do.

Well, guess I'll hit the ironing board. It's late, and I'm tired. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

October 11, 2012 - Msg 90618: Good morning Porch.

My goodness Ro, that's terrible what you are facing. But I like your approach. I had to LOL with your comment of calling them early in the morning when the agents are "fresh". Good luck with that one. Seriously, I hope it can all be resolved.
Boo, how's Ollie doing? All healed up and forgivin you? Boy, the crud you gave me is nasty stuff. The "south end", as you so delicatley described it, hit with a vengence, and still ain't let up. But I don't feel like I am as sick to my stomach. Still not great. The description of the Uncle Hershey breakfast that G-F rendered would have normally had my mouth watering, instead just layed on my chest reading about it. I've dropped 10 pounds in two days, but most of that is from dehydration I'm sure. And very weak and tired. But still, better that I was.

Good to see you Lucy. Sounds like you're a going busy gal.

Speaking of going, I better get that way.

October 11, 2012 - Msg 90623: Good morning, porch! Well, I just got off the phone with the IRS. I now have a totally different picture of what has taken place. Apparently, this IS a case of identity theft. My question to the IRS agent was about the need for a PIN, why the name wouldn't suffice. He stated that it does. They require the SS#, the name, and the date of birth. If any one of those three doesn't match up, the return is denied. So, apparently whoever filed under my number also had my other information as well. That's pretty scary. However, they won't be able to hurt me, I think. I've alerted all my credit cards, and no one can use them without the verification number, nor can they open a new one without giving a password which I've established. As far as bank accounts, they have been fully alerted, and no one will be able to get a loan, or open a line of credit without appearing personally, and the banker knows me on sight. Now, the clincher. The IRS man confirmed that it can take up to a full year to secure my refund. Thanks a lot. It wouldn't do for me to get my hands on the person who has done this. I would slap them so hard their grandkids would feel it.

Well, enough of that. I need to cool off, calm down and go clean up my kitchen. Maybe a little snuggle with Toye Starr will help as well. --Romeena

October 12, 2012 - Msg 90627: Sorry you're not cooling much Boo. I know how you look forward to it. We are supposed to get some rain today. Boy do we need it. Highs mid 60's with snow above 8,000 ft. We are at about 5,000 ft, so no shoveling yet. Good, cause my snow blowers ain't ready yet.

Ro, that's just terrible about the I.D. theft. I hope it can get resolved quick for you. Does anyone here have that Lifelock protection program I hear advertized all the time? Just curious if it is really as good as they say. I'm not sure if it would have helped Ro out with her problem though. Just interested to see if anyone has it, and what they think of it.

Watched the debate last night. You wanna know how I spell j.e.r.k.? I better not say, but if any of you saw it I bet you know from whence I speak.

Better get. Got some outside stuff to try and get done before the rain hits. I'm still feeling weak and tired. Boy, this stuff was nasty.

October 12, 2012 - Msg 90629: Thanks for the empathy, Asa. I do wish it would cool off. I don't wish snow on you, though. I know how hard that is for you. I certainly can sympathize with you on the virus. I am still not back to normal and it has been almost 2 weeks. I was feeling so tired yesterday and guess what?...another little bout of "trouble in the south end" again. What?!! This stuff just doesn't want to surrender. I drank a big glass of ice water last evening, and never even had to go wee-wee. I guess I just needed the fluids. Ok, enough of this kind of talk so early in the morning. ;)

I don't have the Lifelock thing but I am wondering if I should...?

I didn't watch the debate. I didn't even know it was going to be on until it was too late. I have already made my decision about how to vote, so now I am saving myself the aggravation of listening to all the political mess. It gets me in such a state that I feel like I need to "loosen something"!

Plenty to do today and have to get my hair done this afternoon...can't go around looking like a skunk any longer. Have to visit mom, too. She is doing much better and getting a little stronger, bless her heart. Like always, she continues to bounce back, only it takes a little longer now.

October 12, 2012 - Msg 90630: Good morning, porch! MDC, I saw nothing "harsh" in your earlier post. You simply stated the truth, and we all know it. It sickens me, too.

As for the debate, I watched about five minutes, somewhere in the middle of it, and was so irritated by the rude, smirking jacka$$ on the left, that I just switched channels. Like Boo, my mind is made up anyway, so why raise my blood pressure by watching that low-class clown make a fool of himself? I don't think he even realized that he was only making himself look foolish, as he tried to make fun of his opponent with his smirking grins and his eye-rolling. Pitiful. It will be interesting to see how the media responds to his performance today. It will be hard to justify, but I'll bet they try!

Free speech, you know.

The therapist added a new exercise this morning, and it was no picnic. He warned me I'd be sore, and boy, was he ever right. It woke up muscles I didn't know I had, and they didn't appreciate the awakening. Still, as the saying goes, it's for a worthy cause!

...G-F....

October 13, 2012 - Msg 90639: Well, I didn't intend to step off the porch, but I did. I just climbed back on, though. Still got a bit of visitin' to do.

REV will be here next week! I can hardly wait. His concert at my church is on Thursday night, at 6:00 pm, and anyone who can make it is welcome. It's a potluck supper, but guests aren't expected to bring anything. We'll feed ya! Just get there early, like around 5:30. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to seeing REV again. He's always so much fun, and a real Southern gentleman.

I am so frustrated, and really working hard not to be angry about this identity theft thing. I've been on 60% of my pay since June, and I need that money. I'm not going hungry, but there are some things I would like to do that I can't do now. Things like replacing the back door, the one out of the sunroom into the back yard. It sticks, and there's water and ant damage to the facings and the door. It'll keep for a while, but I'm getting tired of fighting the thing to get in or out of the house. It's time to plant snapdragons and such, and even with the deep discount that John gives me at the garden center, I can't justify spending the money right now, so pretty soon there will be precious little color out there.

I do realize how petty these things sound, when there are people struggling to pay their rent. However, these are things that are important to me in my "golden years", things that I have worked hard to make possible, and I would not be in this situation if it weren't for the actions of a criminal.

What is so frustrating is that the IRS rep basically acknowledged that he knew I was the "real" me, but they have to get that other return negated and cleared off the record before mine can be processed. The system won't process two returns under the same SS#, name and DOB. And - it seems - that procedure can take up to one year. As the agent said himself, "our wheels grind very slowly." He said there are thousands of such cases backlogged right now, and it takes time to work through them all.

I have thought of a possible source of help, though. I have to wait until Monday morning, to call my employer's human resources manager, but I think it may work out. I have 225 hours of PTO (paid time off) coming to me. I have to somehow use 25 hours of it before the end of the year, or forfeit it. I'm not going to do that. I can't actually use it, since I'm on medical leave anyway, but I think I can sell it back. So, I'm going to call and see if I can sell back about 48 hours. I think it's paid at 90% of value, and of course it wouldn't include my night shift differential, but still it would provide a substantial boost to my economy, so to speak. I really hope and pray they'll let me do that.

Well, enough whining. For now, I'm going to go pull a few weeds (yes, I can do that again now, at least for a short while) and prune a couple of things. Also need to spray vinegar on the weed seedlings in my main flowerbed. We're not planting in there right now, too many weeds popping up. Hateful things.

Well, gotta run. Going to a grandson's baseball game later, and need to get a few things done around the old homestead. Blessings! --Romeena

October 13, 2012 - Msg 90640: What?! Somebody glued a kid to a wall? I'll admit I've seen kids that could cause you to consider it, but to actually do it? Good grief! --Romeena

October 13, 2012 - Msg 90641: That is so frustrating, Ro. The only consolation I can offer is that perhaps you being the one targeted prevented it from happening to some other elderly person who wouldn't be able to eat without that money. It bothers me that you worked so hard to have the extra (and they don't sound petty) things that you enjoy. I know that the Lord is in control and he will set things right for you because you are His child. Try to rest in that, my friend. I am praying for you and if you need vacation that won't cost you anything come on down here to the beach and hang with us! :) In the meantime, how great that REV is coming back to see you. Sure wish we lived closer so I could come up and see him (and you).

I didn't hear about anyone gluing kids to the wall, but glad you mentioned it, G-F...its a pretty good idea. *wink* Like Ro, while I have considered it (particularly in the church nursery), I would never really do it. hehe

Well, hope all of you have a great Saturday. I will be doing some much-needed chores today. I still felt pretty tired yesterday and didn't get alot done. Bruce did take me out for dinner last night to my fave BBQ place. It is a family-owned place and talk about good! I had a great BBQ sandwich. After, we took a drive around Bruce's old neighborhood and I listened to some stories about him and his childhood friends. His mom and dad lived in that neighborhood until his dad passed away and his mom sold it. We have so many great memories of family gatherings in the old family home there. After his dad passed, seems like everyone just drifted apart. Siblings began to "misbehave" and there were disagreements and separation that never was repaired. We all still see each other from time to time but it seems like Chester was the glue that held everything together. Sad.

Well, better finish the coffee and get to moving around.

I'm going to go Google "mom glues kids to wall" and see what G-F was talking about.

Boo

October 13, 2012 - Msg 90642: Oh my, I just read about the incident of the child being glued to the wall, and it is nothing to joke about. It was a two year old who's mother glued her hands to the wall and then beat the child into a coma. The mom was sentenced to 99 years. How horrible. It happened in Dallas, Ro.

October 13, 2012 - Msg 90643: Oh, and this woman had already had 2 children taken by CPS because of her drug use and she was at the time out on bond for a felony charge. So why did she still have this child? Absurd that she would be allowed to have a child in her home and she was 5 months pregnant at the time. She said at the sentencing phase of the trial that yes, she had glued the child and kicked her into a coma but she was "no monster". Wow.

Boo

October 13, 2012 - Msg 90644: And the reason for the attack?...a potty training accident...the child soiled her pants. Fortunately the child recovered but the woman's other 4 children are living with the maternal grandmother, who claims that her own children were abused in childhood. I am seriously wondering about the sanity of the Texas department of children's protective services! (nothing new)

Boo

October 13, 2012 - Msg 90645: Boo&Romeena, You thought the old Goob was joking I figured you both heard about it. "What was this woman thinking"...and for potty training?
I suppose there will be warnings on super glue bottles now about not using on children (and male appendages)Crazy,Crazy world...Hey Boo, on a lighter note I saw a video about a baby goat being introduced to a new litter of puppies and thought about your funny farm. It was cute, the goat was playing the only way he knew how by head butting the puppies, which they did not find as fun. The goat was hopping and jumping around having a good old time with his new friends it was funny, and better than the super glue story..Got to go & mow the grass & leaves have a good day all....G-F

October 13, 2012 - Msg 90646: Getting warm around here...it is 90 today with high humidity and my air conditioner went out! "The man" is here and has been working on it for hours. I want to move north so badly.

Boo

October 13, 2012 - Msg 90647: How far North Boo? As in Yankee North? We'll put ya up in Ohio (NOT Cleveland) alot of farm land around my parts Bernie & the girls can play in the snow! Alot of space for Thelma Lou to run,and the grass is green and the leaves are at their peak colors this week-end. There is a Alpaca farm just around the corner don't know if you ever had rasied any of those.
But I suppose you were talking about Northern Texas Right? But then again you could'nt build Bernie a snow igloo if you stayed in Texas...

October 13, 2012 - Msg 90648: Thanks, that sounds wonderful G-F. I was actually talking about Colorado. I would love to live there. There are so many part of CO I love...the Colorado Springs area, Georgetown, Buena Vista, the list goes on and on... Maybe someday. :)

Boo

October 14, 2012 - Msg 90649: How Boo stay away from the north side ohio it just as bad as it can be .

TOM

October 14, 2012 - Msg 90650: Well, TOM, it looks like I am stuck here for now, anyway. I know some people like it here on the coast but it's just not for me. I even hate the beach. I was born and raised here so my family, and husband's job is here and it just makes sense to be here. I went to Colorado for the first time when I was 19 and the beauty of it stole my heart. After numerous trips to different parts of the state, I love it more and more, even in winter. Hard to explain but I have a love for it like it's an old friend.

Time for bed...preachin' in the morning.

Boo

October 14, 2012 - Msg 90651:
Boo, I think I may have asked you this before, but have you ever been to Ouray, CO? It is the most picturesque mountain town around. Many historic old houses, and no fast food places are allowed! Check it out: http://www.ouraycolorado.com/discover-ouray/
Oh, and BOO, you won't believe this but it is TRUE and it happened today at dad's. I helped him onto the the stool as i do each day, and today, for some reason, he blurts out (we're all adults here and we all know of Boo's dear departed dad, so...)"My balls are hanging in the water!" Give me a stack of Bibles, it is all true! (: I burst out laughing, then HE started laughing, then the next thing he says is, "so it all comes down to this?" Really! It was so-o-o-o funny. And may your dad forgive me, and may he rest in peace, but I just HAD to share that!

Anyone watch Charotte race today, or following the chase?

80s still holding in Phoenix.
Hey to TOM.
RO, when is the mayberry cruise this year?
praying about yout ID plight.
Good answers on mom's home cooking tho! haha
And actually my fav ep is NOT that one, but
rather Opie and Andy Bachelors, I meant to say. The scene of Andy and Peggy singing on the porch always "gets me" right here!
Y'all take care now, hear. luv ya.
Prayers,
MDC

October 14, 2012 - Msg 90652: Howdy, porch! Boo, I do believe you're the only Texan I ever met who expressed a desire to live elsewhere! That just doesn't happen. You must really be fed up with the coast.

Oh, I just have to add this - just food for thought. Many years ago, when our older kids were young teenagers, and Heather and David were small children, we went to the Frio River for a week of tubing. While there, Dale and I got to talking about how nice it would be to just move to the area. Then Heather stopped us in our tracks when she said, "I don't think I'd want to do that, because then we couldn't come here for vacation, we'd just have to work and go to school here." Out of the mouths of babes...

The cruise is the end of October and first of November. Eloise and I fly out of here on Oct. 28, ship sails from Miami on Oct.29, and we return home on Saturday evening, Nov. 3. My friend Deanna will be staying at my house with Toye Starr.

Thanks for the concern about the identity theft. I'm thinking that I'm not going to experience any problems aside from the income tax thing. The return was evidently filed quite some time ago, so they've had my information for several months, and have not made any attempt to take advantage of it. I think it was just a tax scam, nothing more. That's enough, of course. It's sure giving me a hard time, but with God's help, I'll get through it okay. I will eventually get my money from the IRS, which is more than I could say if the criminal had siphoned a bank account.

MDC, regarding your dad, perhaps your best response to him might have been, "Well, just don't flush!" (Sorry!)

Well, guess I'd better turn in. Preaching in the morning. Sure am glad we're on the new, revised schedule, because now I don't have to be there until 9:15, an hour later than it used to be. I declare, getting "church-dressed" and getting there by 8:15, as creaky as I am in the early morning, was getting to be a chore, and sometimes I just didn't get it done. No excuse now! Blessings, friends! --Romeena

October 14, 2012 - Msg 90653: Y'all are a mess. Thanks for the laugh with your story MDC, and Romeena's advice was hilarious considering a video a vendor sent me at work advertising their "power flush toilets" they are trying to sell us. In it it shows a dozen golf balls getting flushed. Better not get one of them toilets for your Dad MDC. Just in case. lol

Boo, I'm sorry you are not cooling down much. We got our promised rain in the valleys, and snow in the hills, up to a foot in some of the higher elevations. We got up to 60 for a high yesterday. Just perfect almost. If it would just do this all winter I'd be a happy camper. But come January there will be days we will be lucky to get over freezing for daytime highs. And you will be enjoying very comfy temps. And I'll be carrying on something terrible. I'm already carrying on just thinking about it. :)

Going to my Daughters Church this morning. The children are doing a program their today, and my Grand kids are in it. I just love them little rug rats.

Prayers for all to have a blessed Sabbath.

Asa

October 14, 2012 - Msg 90654: doing a program there (not their) today. Sorry. It's early.

Asa

October 14, 2012 - Msg 90655: HAHAHA....I am SO glad you shared that story, MDC...I can really appreciate that one! Hilarious..."So it all comes down to this.."!! That about sums it up, doesn't it? That's great.

Yes, I have been to Ouray a few times but usually just passing through on my way up the mountain to Silverton. Ouray is fantastic...just amazing in it's beauty. Seems like I never had the opportunity to stay there but wish I had.

That's a fair assessment, Ro. I am "fed up" with the coast. The heat and humidity is just too much after all these years. I long for seasons and cooler weather, trees that change in fall, snow in winter now and then, something besides just flat lands and sand.

Thanks, Asa. I am glad you are enjoying good weather now. :)

Boo

October 14, 2012 - Msg 90656: Good morning, porch! Just got up, sat down here to check email, and noticed a squirrel out back, with two huge pecans in his mouth. They were still in the green hulls, and attached with a stem. He sat down just about ten feet from my window, broke them apart, and very quickly shucked the hull off one of them. Then he carried the nut over to my rose island, and in about five seconds, he had buried it. They are so quick! And so thorough! What makes me laugh is the way they use their little hands to bury something. After they dig the hold and park the nut, they pull the dirt back over it, very carefully tamp it down and "shape" the soil over the nut, then the final thing is to pull a piece of debris - a leaf or something - over and pat it in place over the spot. They are so funny! Anyway, he buried both pecans and left the yard. I'll bet a cookie that he'll be back in a few minutes with some more to be buried. The only pecan tree around here is in a front yard about four houses down, and still he chooses my flowerbeds to invade. Do you know how hard those things are to get up, once they've sprouted and put down a root? Most of the time you can't pull them, you have to dig them up!

Well, I'd better get up from this keyboard and go get dressed. Even with the later hour, if I'm not careful I'll be late for church. Asa, enjoy your grandkids. Isn't it fun to see them, so innocently participating in something like that? God is good. --Romeena

October 14, 2012 - Msg 90657: Make that "dig the hole" - and I proofread, too. --Romeena

October 14, 2012 - Msg 90658: Romeena, The sqirrels know how much enjoyment they bring to you, they like to "show off" their talents to you. Plus they know where to come when their food stores get low and in really tough times you'll feed them good! I'm I right, or I'm I wrong,...Right! we all know.. Maybe you can do a food for weeding trade off with them and they could also call in "Cousin Otter" to take care of your pond too..Just a thought!

MDC funny story about Dad...as Asa said just make sure he doesn't get a power-flush toilet it could ruin a mans whole day..especially if they drop their dentures in there Bleeewie their GONE!
Yes, I know about this...WHY? I have had to retrieve a few sets over the years...(It's part of the job discription that falls under, "other realated duties"..haha The stories we could tell right Asa?? I'll leave ya all with that vision..
G-F..

October 14, 2012 - Msg 90659: The squirrel is back. No doubt the little critter has been burying pecans in my flowerbeds all morning. Oh well, I don't care. I do wish he'd do what you said though, and trade weeding for the right to plant.

It is absolutely gorgeous here today, after a pouring rainstorm last night. Boy, was I glad to see that! Right now, the sky is perfectly clear, bright blue, brisk breeze blowing, and it's just 75°. I love it! Boo, I wish I could share some of this with you. The sun is now low enough in the southern sky that it's behind the trees and my pond is in day-long shade. Thus, the algae is disappearing and the water will soon be crystal clear. The filters and the UV light do all they can, but in the bright sunlight the stuff proliferates faster than the remedies can handle it. When it's shady, it slows way down and the remedies just clear it right up.

Well, guess I'll go rustle up some lunch. The SS group all went out, but I didn't go. They were going to a place called Aspen Creek, which some of them seem to just love. I ate there once. Once, and no more. The food wouldn't even qualify as mediocre, in my opinion. Everyone recommended the pork chop plate, so I ordered it. Two fried chops, which was generous. However, they were pitiful. Each was over an inch thick along the bone side, but way underdone. Not just pink, but red in spots. Each tapered down to about a quarter inch thick along the outer edge, which was charred almost black. I don't know what kind of hog they came off of, but I think it must have been a warthog, because the meat was tough and stringy and had a weird taste. Also, it was very greasy. There was no bread on the table, nor did any come with the plate. When I asked about a roll, I was informed it would be a dollar extra. For bread? On top of that, the server was inept, forgetful, acted bored and was excruciatingly slow. I ate what I could, kept my mouth shut, and even left a standard tip, but that's it. Nope, never again. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

So, I'm going to go dig in the freezer and see what I can find. If all else fails, I'll run up to Sonic and get a burger, but I think I've got something in the freezer. I usually do. Or maybe some soup. I like soup.

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

October 14, 2012 - Msg 90660: BREAD?? Just make the soup Ro, and call up that server and say "No Soup for you!!"..ha G-F

October 14, 2012 - Msg 90661: Ro, that sounds like a place that could use the chef from the "Restaurant Impossible" show on food network.. It is one of my favorite shows. The guy helps the small-town kind of people who's restaurants are failing. He turns the place upside down, uses some tough love where it is needed but he does a great job.

We had lunch after church at the local Whataburger and the staffing was short (one cook in the kitchen) so it was a wait but the food was good. I witnessed a very rude and just plain mean man throw his food on the counter and demand his money back...guess he didn't like to wait. I felt sorry for the staff because it was clearly a management issues and not something they were responsible for. They were working their tailends off, bless them. My burger was worth the wait and that jack@ss who made a scene probably would have enjoyed his lunch if he hadn't lost his temper. There is never any good reason to treat people badly who are trying to serve you. There was a young employee who was mentally disabled, who would carry the food out to the tables and I could tell he was upset by the whole scene. The people were rude to him, too. I just hate that kind of thing. I think maybe I get online and leave some comments about how hard the employees worked today and how well they handled the abuse of certain unintelligent patrons.

Ro, I do wish you could blow some of that nice weather my way. Thanks for thinking of it. ;) It was plenty warm today but I just stayed inside all day. Tried to get a nap but hard to do around here on the weekends. Sometimes this place is like grand central but usually I like it that way. Its kind of nice having the house that the kid's friends like to come to.

Well, tomorrow is Monday and chores abound but that's ok. I think I will check the weather and see if there is a glimmer of hope in my future, concerning a cool front.

Boo

October 14, 2012 - Msg 90662: Ah yes, CC, home of the Whataburger!! (:

October 14, 2012 - Msg 90663: Boo, that's awful, the way that man behaved at the Whataburger. There is never, never, ever any excuse for someone to act out like that. In the first place, if for no other reason, it's counter-productive. No way on earth will that kind of boorish display cause people to try to make you happy. If you happen to be an observer of such a scene, you can see it happening. The minute the man started his little tantrum, I'll bet the whole staff just shut down, for all practical purposes. The man would have gotten much further by just going to the counter and quietly stating "I can see you all are understaffed, and I'm sorry, but I have a deadline to make. Is there any way you can sort of put a rush on my order?" They'd have done it, I'll bet. As for being rude to the mentally challenged employee, that's just bullying, plain and simple, and there's no excuse for it at all. Shame on that man. What do you bet me he has an ulcer? People like that build their own problems, and prisons.

About the Aspen Creek restaurant, it's in a nice, upscale motel complex out near the airport. You would think it would do a better job, and maybe they do now - it was nearly a year ago that I ate in there. Once was enough, though. I won't say I'll never eat there again, because I might. If I was with a planned group, and that's where the majority chose, then I would go and keep quiet. Our SS lunches after church are very loose, however - somebody picks a place, and anyone who wants to show up is welcome. No reservations, nothing like that, so I'm not rocking anyone's boat if I don't go. They like the place, so go and have fun! I'm well over 21, and quite capable of feeding myself. I had a ripe avocado, so made some guacamole, had some taquitos in the freezer so baked them up crispy in the oven, and it was good. Tonight was a Honeycrisp apple and some swiss cheese. Yum!

I'm very blessed in that I have a very eclectic appetite. I like everything (except poorly-cooked pork chops and bad service) and can eat anything. Nothing ever disagrees with me, and I like it all, so I'm very easy to feed. I love all veggies - I even eat rutabagas! Truly, it would be hard to find something that I just wouldn't eat. Now, I'm not talking about locusts or whatever - I'm talking about generally recognized food stuff common to this country, and a lot of things not so common. I love ethnic foods - Thai, Chinese, Indian, and of course, Italian and Mexican. I just don't like to pay a dollar for a little roll that looks like it fell out of a package.

Blessings, everyone! --Romeena
