REV, be sure that little Jake gets all spiffed up and makes it into a picture or two. He's a family member too, and one of these days you'll be glad he's in the pictures. Some may have thought it odd (I didn't care), but at my mom's funeral, and again at my dad's, there was a little basket of flowers, tagged "With love. from Sugarplum." She loved them, and they loved her, and it just seemed right, so I ordered them. My family understood, and I didn't care what anyone else thought. Family is family, and furkids are family too.

Has anyone else been bothered by a particularly annoying popup lately? I have a good popup blocker, and usually just almost never encounter one, but this one has been coming in for several days now. No matter what I'm doing on the computer, it intrudes. Just now, there were no programs open, and I was watching TV. The computer was in sleep mode, and here came this popup. It has a very annoying "beep-boop" signal, and the text reads: "Online help - Perform system maintenance calling. Answer == answer with video == decline." I tried hitting "decline" and it closed, but was back in a couple of minutes. Then I tried x-ing out of the box, but again it returned. It seems to appear about five times, no matter how I close it, then it goes away for a couple of days. Then the cycle repeats. I'm not about to respond with "Answer" because I don't know what pathways that would open. Anybody got any ideas?

RO- that is a "virual" pop up. Try going to "Internet Options" and delete all cookies and temporary internet files and even the brosing history. That should do it. If not, run a scan with your anti-virus program.

September 25, 2012 - Msg 90377: Morning porch, hope all is well. been busy on my end of porch, not much time to stop by for a visit.

42 degrees on my end of the porch this morning. time to break out the socks and longer sleeved tops. I love the fall weather! some of trees are starting to turn already. hopefully we will have some pretty colors.

Attended a wedding on Saturday with Patrick and Beth. Patrick's best friends Mom got married. She
is 42 and neither her or the groom has ever been married before. It was an outdoor wedding, in a field in back of their home. It was probably one of the most unusual events I have been too in a while.

Breakfast menu will be: french toast with maple syrup, fruit, bacon, sausage, coffee, juice, tea.

better get busy.

As I said, I'm not going to open any pathways until I know for sure, but I'm about 99% sure it's not anything I want to fool around with, so I'm going to do what you said. As for running my anti-virus program, it runs automatically every day, Why it didn't bust this thing, I don't know. Anyway, I just shut the computer down last night, didn't want that miserable "beep-boop-beep" sound waking me up. So, I'm off to delete al the cookies and stuff. I do that periodically anyway, but haven't done it in a few weeks.

Ro....what anti-virus program do you use? I've used a lot different ones through the years but when I got my last computer I was told to get WEBROOT. Since then I've talked to a number of computer "geeks" and they all said they highly recommend it and they use it. One thing I love about it is it only takes a minute to run a scan. They also told me when it scans of course it shows you the things found and that you will hardly ever (I have never had one) see a virus/threats that was found because webroot catches it before it even gets to the computer.

September 25, 2012 - Msg 90389: Hey, porch. REV, I have AVG, also McAfee, also Malwarebytes Anti-malware. AVG is pre-set to run a scan daily. I also have CCCleaner, which has to be activated. You'd think that with all that I wouldn't have a problem. One thing that does concern me, though. I recently downloaded the Skype program, though I haven't activated it yet. I wonder if something rode in on that??

Just got home from mousing around with Eloise - she got a manicure, I got a pedicure, then we poked around in Hobby Lobby for a while, where I bought a few Christmas ornaments - the last thing on earth I need - and then went to lunch. Now I'm full, tired and ready for a nap!

Well the photo session went amazing. I stood there so proud of my baby girl. It was so funny...the photographer during the session asked my daughter if she would agree to do a modeling session today during the shoot. She said yes so he got on the phone and I heard him tell someone "we've found the perfect model". Next thing we know a huge limo pulls up. It was a limo company wanting to do shots for ads in bridal magazines and posters for bridal shows. So she'll get some free photos out of it anyway:) Yep I'm bragging a little bit but hey...that's what dads do...lol

Tired tonight. Long day and got to catch up the laundry tomorrow. Mom is doing better but still seems to be very weak in her legs and I thought I was going to drop her once today. She has a lift chair and somehow when I sat her down, she started sliding right out of the thing and her legs were too weak to hold her in there. I hope she gets some strength back soon. I just don't know what to think.

I have a doc's appointment tomorrow to talk about some abnormal lab values I had last week. I am really hoping my sugar isn't up. I have been struggling with some things lately and need the Lord to help me to take better care of myself.

Well, think I will get to bed early. I couldn't sleep last night and then woke up at 5:30. :( Hate when that happens.

well, I live in a house divided. 2 for miracle whip and 2 for mayo. Myself, I would rather have mustard if there is no miracle whip. Growing up, we thought miracle whip WAS mayo because that is all we had in the house.

when the torch for care giving for our parents passes from them to us. My Mom is 81, still lives alone and is able to be fairly active. She has problems hearing and at times her hearing aides don't really help. The hearing aids seem to have lots of problems with needing batteries and seem to need repair more than I think something that expensive should need. I am thankful I still have her and she is able to do what she does.

Do any of you folks have a Which Witch sandwhich shop near you? One recently opened up in our area and it is quite tasty. not to expensive
and the meat and veggies seem pretty fresh. We also have a sandwhich shop called Jersey Mikes and they make good subs as well. They slice the meat and cheese as they go, right in front of you so you know it is fresh and not processed stuff.
well, after I have made myself hungry, lets meet at the local sub shop for lunch. see you there!

September 26, 2012 - Msg 90409: Hey, guess what?! I went to the doc and my blood sugar was normal! yay!! My fasting blood sugar was good and my A1C was within normal limits. Guess my determination to cut out most of the sugar from my diet payed off in a big way. I am smiling a big smile. I had not lost weight, but didn't gain at least. My thyroid was normal so don't know why the hair on my head is falling out...doc says maybe stress or a vitamin deficiency of some kind. He suggested a good vitamin with folic acid...we'll see. The cholesterol is still high, as always, but the liver enzymes look better. Thanks for those prayers! :)

Great to see you Daphne and very happy to hear that your husband is doing so much better.

September 26, 2012 - Msg 90412: Hey, porch! Well, I finally figured out what that intrusive popup is all about. I finally noticed, up in a corner and very, very small - a little "Skype" symbol. Once I saw that, I felt safe in hitting the "answer" option, and another box appeared, this one containing a bit more information. I downloaded the Skype program a week or two ago, but have not activated it. Apparently they are wondering why, and want me to complete the setup. Maybe I will, maybe I won't. I need to know more, and right now, I'm just not in the mood to deal with it. I had Skype a few years ago, have the little camera and everything, but when my computer crashed about three years ago, I lost the program and just never downloaded it again. So, we'll see.

I just went out back and fed my fish. They're getting so pretty, especially the biggest koi. He's now about nine inches long (started out at maybe four inches. He may get up to two feet in my pond - would get bigger in a bigger pond. His fins have gotten so long and graceful, his colors are beautiful, and he's just the prettiest thing! There are two others, much younger and smaller than he is, but they're growing, and will be very pretty. One is a creamy white, with a bright splash of gold on top of his head. The other is unusual, being black and white, no other colors on him. You don't see a lot of koi that color. The rest of the fish are comets, which will get up to about eight, maybe nine inches, and there are a few plain goldfish, which won't get much over six inches. That miserable bird got all three of my shubunkins, but he hasn't been back in a long time, so I'm tempted to get a couple more. They're such pretty little things, with their mottled colors, and over-all bluish cast. Hateful bird. I'd sure like to yank a knot in his neck! But of course, I wouldn't.

Well, guess I'll go scrounge up something to eat. Didn't eat much lunch, just a little guacamole and some chips. I'm never very hungry after rehab. I think tonight I'll just make a taco salad. I've got chips, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, shredded cheese and some chili w/beans. Easy, quick, and good. Yep, that'll do it! Spot, can I send you some?

September 27, 2012 - Msg 90416: Thanks, Asa! Seeing that the changes I made had done so much good, I am motivated to do even more. :) Like the dreaded word: "exercise"...

Busy day today...homeschooling and MIL has a dr's appointment I have to take her to. She called me last night and told me that...this is pretty horrible, but keep in mind she is 80 and very batty...she noticed that the collar on her cat was too tight and it was actually starting to grow into the cat's neck (like you see on animal cops, I guess)! She said she pulled it out and there were maggots on it. I was horrified but now I have to go over there and find a vet to take the cat to for her because I am NOT taking it to my vet...I'm finding someone who doesn't know me. I just hope they don't fine her for animal cruelty or something. She is just too old and mindless to have an animal to care for but every time she comes to that realization and gets rid of one, pretty soon she has a cat again. I understand that she gets lonely at home alone and feels the need for some companionship and we already had to take her car away from her. Its a difficult situation, for sure. Anyway, wish me luck...

Speaking of fines.....my daughter got pulled over by a state trooper yesterday (as she pulled into her work parking lot)and told her she didn't have her seat belt on. She said yes sir I do and I always wear it. That's when he noticed she had it under her arm. She wears it that way because she is small and the belt hits her right across her neck and her car does not have anyway to adjust it. Would you believe he fined her even though she had it on. She said he was so rude about it. Another officer came into her work for something else and she mentioned it to him. He asked the name of the officer and immediately said "that don't suprise me one bit".

I'm back....just had a vist at the door from the Jehovah's Witness. Sadly those folks truly feel they are working their way to Heaven.

September 27, 2012 - Msg 90418: Oh, Boo, that's just awful! Poor kitty! I think you're right, she doesn't need to have a pet, because obviously she's not trustworthy, and the animal will suffer. I'm so glad you're taking charge of things and getting the cat some medical help. Why on earth did she have a collar on a cat anyway? I guess some cats do wear collars, but I've always believed them to be dangerous, given a cat's tendency to climb and to poke into small spaces and such. Too easy for a collar to get hung up on something.

It gets tough, doesn't it? I remember that toward the end of his life, my dad started wanting to get a puppy. He was living at Twelve Oaks, and some of the residents there did have pets, but they were rational and able to give the pet proper care. Daddy would never have knowingly abused an animal, but I knew he would forget to feed it, or give it something it shouldn't have, and house-breaking would never have happened. I talked him out of that idea, then he started asking me to leave Sugarplum with him "for a little visit. I'll keep her a week or so and then you can have her back." Nope. I took her with me every day when I visited, but she never stayed.

My dad's sister was a lifelong dog lover, and so was her husband. They both developed dementia, and we finally had to bring her here and put her in an Alzheimer's unit. Her behavior was very erratic and dangerous. She mourned for her two dogs. which were in absolutely terrible shape, riddled with ticks and fleas and both had ear infections. We took them to their vet, paid for their treatment and asked them to find homes for them, which they did. Anyway, Aunt Bess grieved so for those dogs, that I found a fairly realistic-looking stuffed dog and took it to her, just for a snuggly. At first she seemed to understand it was a toy, but after a while, we weren't so sure. Toward the end, she took me aside one day and told me she was worried about "Baby" because she couldn't get him to eat! Sure enough, his face had traces of dried food, where she had tried to feed him. I just told her not to worry, that he would eat when he was hungry, and that seemed to satisfy her. So sad, but imagine if she had been responsible for a real animal.

I think in these situations, it ultimately becomes much more difficult for the caregiver than it is for the receiver of the care. For them, when the world no longer makes sense to them, there is often a shift in their reality, an adjustment that helps things to "fit" again. Thus - my aunt's stuffed dog became real to her, and she was no longer grieving because she had no pet. That's why I've always believed it's best to play along, and refrain from making too many attempts to "re-orient" someone who is living in their own world. If they're happy there, why pull them back to a reality where they're not happy?

Well, that's just my ten-cent philosophy. Every situation is different. Now, I've got to go feed this little furkid for whom I'm responsible, lest she report me to the authorities. She's had no breakfast yet, and her cold nose on my ankle is telling me about it. Blessings! --Romeena
September 27, 2012 - Msg 90419: Awww, REV, that's awful about your daughter getting ticketed like that. The comment made by the second officer speaks volumes. It's sad, but true, that certain occupations can attract certain personalities, people who should not be in that field. Thus, churches have to be very vigilant about whom they hire as youth ministers. Schools have to carefully screen teachers, especially coaches and gym teachers. And sadly, policy departments have to watch out for the "bully" personality, the guy who likes to strut around with a big gun on his hip, who enjoys having authority over other people. Add to that your daughter's beauty, and obviously this cop was enjoying his job just a little too much.

I suppose wearing the belt that way isn't too safe. (I saw a short film once that showed how in a collision, a belt worn like that twists the body and can do a lot of damage.) Still, at 5'3" myself, I understand about the belt cutting across her neck. That can break the neck, or injure the larynx in a collision. My last car had a way that you could give a slight tug on the belt at a comfortable setting, and it would lock there. Loose enough to be comfortable, but tight enough to protect. My present car doesn't do that, so I solved it with a simple spring-type clothespin. I just pull the belt down until it's loose enough not to cut the side of my neck, then put the pin on it in such a way that it keeps it from retracting any farther into the roller. Maybe she does now because I have been doing less and requiring that her other children do more...it is working out, too. I had one of her daughter's take her to do her grocery shopping last time and had her oldest son take her for her CT scan last week.

Thank you for your kindness and prayers, REV. Now, I am going to weigh in on the seat belt issue. I honestly believe that the seat belt law is ridiculous. I do think that the law should require children under 18 to be buckled in but as an adult, my being in a seat belt is of no consequence to anyone but myself. If I wish to put myself at risk, that is my decision (foolish, though it is). My being without a seatbelt poses no public risk of any kind so should not be forced by law. I do wear my seatbelt because I feel safer with it but I don't appreciate that the law says I HAVE to. There, I said it and I probably won't take it back.

Very sad about your Aunt, Ro. About MIL..I have no idea why on earth she had a collar on that cat because it's an inside cat. I never put collars on cats because they can hang themselves. Why would a cat need one if it is inside all the time anyway? You have to know this woman, though...ditzy as they come. She has a jewelry box that is almost as big as her dresser and it is full of all kinds of costume jewelry and she always has too much of it on, in my opinion. I can only suppose that she felt the cat needed some sort of decoration. I am going to tell her today that she needs to keep collars off the cat and if I find them on there I am going to cut them off!

You will get no argument from me about your opinion of seatbelts. I couldn't agree more. Yes, children should be buckled in, and the parents fined if they are not. That's another matter entirely. However, if the law can force me to wear a seatbelt to protect my own self, then when are they going to start coming into my house, and write me a ticket because I might have a loose rug, or an unmarked step, or some other condition that might be dangerous to me? I can just picture it: "Excuse me, ma'am, but I'm from the throw rug police, and I need to inspect your home for rug violations."

MDC, thanks for the tip about the seatbelt adjuster. That looks like it would work fine. I'll have to stop at PepBoys and check it out. I've often wondered what an officer would think about my clothespin, and had about decided I'd just take it off and drop it down beside the seat before he got to my window! However, the way I place it, it shouldn't interfere with the function of the belt, I don't make the belt very loose, just enough to make it quit cutting into my neck.

On the subject of caring for confused folks - I remember my grandfather's last few months. He was in a facility, and my aunt and/or my mom would visit him daily. He was completely confused, and usually thought he was either laying brick (he was a brick mason)or fishing. He would be propped up in his bed, and would go through the motions of picking up a brick, troweling mortar onto it, then set it in place, complete with little taps from the trowel to position the brick evenly. Or, he would hold up an imaginary fishing rod, and with just the right flick of his wrist, he would "cast" his line out, then would reel it in, slowly and carefully.

This distressed my aunt very much, and she'd cry and try to reason with him. She'd say things like "Daddy, you're not at the lake. Look around you! Do you see any water here?" He'd just look at her with blank, empty eyes, and cast his line out again. Finally my mother couldn't stand it any longer, and she grabbed her sister and shook her a little and said, "YOU need to look around. Do you really want him to see and understand where he is? Let him lay his bricks, let him fish! I hope he catches a big one. At least he's happy!" My aunt started crying then, and finally said, "You're right, you're right." From then on, everyone just went along with him, and visits were funny and fun.

We are taught in nursing school to re-orient a confused patient as much as possible, and while that's sometimes appropriate, I'm convinced that it's not always the best thing to do. Why yank someone back into an unpleasant reality, when they're perfectly happy in their own reality, the one created by their own mind, especially when they're in a terminal situation.

Well, good news...I looked at MIL's cat and it is perfectly fine. There is just a very small area on its neck that is dry and barely even there. I think she overreacted a bit. Anyway, the cat is fine. I told her to leave the collars off and she agreed. She said the reason she had one on her is because the cat went out sometimes and she wanted everyone to know the cat wasn't a stray. So, all is well for now.

I have more I want to share with you all but I am so sleepy and I should have been in bed 2 hours ago. I will be back in the morning with my coffee.

September 28, 2012 - Msg 90439: Good morning, porch. Boo, it's 76° here in the Dallas area, cloudy, probably pretty humid. I don't know, I haven't been out. I think the cloud cover will break, though, and we'll have a warm and sunny afternoon. Good news about the kitty. I'm glad there was no injury to its neck.

My employer just extended my medical leave until November 5, based on my back surgeon's reports, and according to him, it will be extended again, but they'll only do it in short increments. I'm on short-term leave right now, and that will run out completely on December 10. After that, I'll have to either return to work, go on long-term leave, or start using PTO. I know I won't be returning to work at that point, but not sure about whether to sign on for long-term leave (there are some disadvantages to that) or just to start using my paid time off hours. I have 225 hours, which would carry me about nine weeks. I don't expect to need that much time off, which is why I'm hesitating about getting on long-term leave. Decisions, decisions.

Well, I';m off to rehab. It's a slow process, but I do think I'm seeing improvement. Sure is a drag though, driving out there to the north end of nowhere three days a week. They're relocating next month, about a half mile closer to me, so that cuts a mile off the round trip. A little help, but not much. It's still about a gallon of gas every trip. Oh well. If I was running out to a kid's ball game, I wouldn't think twice about it. I guess I need to get my values straight. --Romeena

Ro, just my 2 cents worth, but if you have an option of not having to drain your leave, I'd sure lean that way. It's nice having that to fall back on just in case. I have 360 hours of Vac time (we max at that) and another almost 500 hours of P.T. It sure is nice to have that peace of mind that I'm covered for a good long time in the event something bad happens. Anyway, your a smart cookie and will choose wise no doubt.

Does anyone else see a problem here? Has no one ever taught little Laurie how to stand on her tippy-toes? Even in the days when I wore high heels, I could make myself even taller by standing on tiptoe. I never, ever wore heels that high! So, my conclusion is that either Laurie is wearing dangerously high heels (like maybe those murderous platform things they're pushing now) or no one ever showed her how to stand on tiptoe. Things that make you go "hmmmm."

You're right, Boo, they do all talk alike. We don't, of course. People talk about a Southern accent, or a Texas drawl. I don't know what they're talking about, do you? --Romeena
