September 08, 2012 - Msg 90154: Haha, Boo! Sounds like Bruce's brother has a handle on the problem, and did what needed to be done. Maybe MIL will think twice now before she calls him to complain. You did mention wanting to know what I'd say about the situation, though, so here goes. Just keep taking the high road, be as patient as you can, and try not to have any hard words with her, deserving though she may be. If Richard is willing to do that for you, let him. It sounds like he has built that kind of relationship with her, and can get away with it. If you or Bruce try to do it, she'll use it as a club against you forever. Just stay sweet, avoid confrontation, and do NOT argue with her. Remember - "Well, you could be right." Or - "Is that really how you feel? Interesting!" You will leave her with nowhere to turn. She is not going to live forever, and believe me, when it's all over, and all you have left is memories, the less bitterness in them, the better. The poor thing sounds like a very unhappy person to me, and that's sad.

However, I do have to recall the story of a patient I had years ago. She was very old, very bitter, mean and vindictive. She was verbally abusive to the staff - I mean VERY abusive - and would hit or pinch if she got the chance. We were all very careful around her. She scratched me once and drew blood. Well, one morning her niece happened to walk in, in time to witness one of her aunt's tirades, and started to apologize for her. I assured her no apologies were necessary, explaining that we all understood that it was her dementia driving her behavior, and she was not responsible. The niece shocked us by saying, "No, it's her nature. She's mean as a snake, always has been. Nobody in the family could stand her. I don't even know why I come to see her, except I feel sorry for any creature that's as mean-spirited and miserable as she's always been. She just sits and stews in her own venom, and always has." So - you never know, I guess.

Well, I'm off to bed. Preaching comes early in the morning - at 8:15. I'll be glad when we switch to the new schedule, which will mean SS at 9:30 and preaching at 10:45. Much better! September 09, 2012 - Msg 90156: Woohooo! It's 59 degrees here this morning! Don't give up hope, Boo. It will get to you eventually. Anyway, it sure did feel good when I walked out on the driveway to get the paper in before the neighborhood thief gets it. Can you imagine anyone that would compromise their integrity by stealing a newspaper? Honestly! But it happens. Mine disappeared last week, and has gone missing a few times in the past. I guess they're after the coupons. Well, if they take it today, they're in for a surprise. I picked up today's delivery, and left a made-up one in its place. I save my old papers and every few weeks I take them to the Humane Society, where they're shredded for pet bedding. So, I made a "new" Sunday paper this morning, containing coupons about three weeks old, last week's headline section, a couple of old sports sections, and enough other sections to make it look nice and fat and real. I'd love to see the thief's face when they open it. I hope they get the message.

September 09, 2012 - Msg 90157: Wow, 59 degrees, Ro...I haven't felt that for about 5 or 6 months. I sat out on the porch swing and had my coffee this morning and it was about 75, which felt wonderful...that's the coolest it has been in a long time. It will get back up in the 90's today, though, and all week but at least we are supposed to get some rain this week.

Ro, thanks for the advice. I am continuing to take the high road and never, ever get into arguing with her. it serves absolutely no purpose other than to fuel her unending complaints about us. I don't get that kind of "love"...why would a grandmother treat her grandkids badly. You all know enough about Sean to know he has a heart of solid gold, and he does. He is kind and wants to do right and struggles to hold his tongue when his grandma starts talking badly about his parents or is rude to him (and she almost always is). Every one of her other grandkids stopped communication with her and have nothing to do with her at all. None would even come for her recent birthday party. One of her grandsons who is in his 30's told me a few months ago that he wants nothing to do with her, ever. Its a sad situation, but one she made for herself and no matter what, she thinks she is in the right because she is the mother. She seems to think that gives her a license to be ugly and abuse her family members. It never seems to sink in that it has seperated nearly everyone from her. Ro, her kids tell me that she has always been like this but it gets even worse as she ages. Yesterday her oldest daughter, who rarely sees her mom, told me that her mom made her dad's life miserable. What a terrible thing to have one of your children say about you. For years I have tried to help the situation...been a peacemaker, gotten involved where I shouldn't have to make things "better" and it never mattered one bit. I have to move on, smile, and keep those boundaries in place. For now, I am not going to ask Sean to take her places when she calls him. He needs a break before there is no relationship at all there (like with the other grandkids). Its a tough thing to deal with and I can only pray that her younger daughter will eventually be able to get a job and an apartment and take her in (I've got high hopes, frankly). Oh well, life goes on.

September 09, 2012 - Msg 90162: Thanks for the kind words, G-F, but I'm not so much wise as just old. I've lived a long time, by God's grace, and experience is a great teacher. Great parents make great teachers as well, and I had two of those, as well as thirty-eight years with a husband who had a gentle, God-fearing heart and who taught me much. I have a firecracker temper, which my dad tried hard to modify when I was a child, because he had one too, and knew it could be a liability. Then when I married Mr. Easygoing, he took over the job, and simply would not permit me to let my temper take over. He refused to be bullied by it, and would just stand and watch my little fit until it subsided, and then would ask if I was ready to rationally discuss whatever the issue was. That didn't have to happen too many times, and I began to learn that the high road was by far the more effective path to take.

Hey, I learned something last week! My electric bills have been pretty horrible, with last month's being $320. I am billed through Reliant, and have been getting these solicitations from TXU, offering "free" electricity between 10pm and 6am. Sounds pretty good, and I wasn't on a contract with Reliant, so I called Reliant to see if they offered anything like that - otherwise I was going to switch. A "smart meter" is required for that plan, but since I had discovered that they had installed one of those things without my knowledge, I might as well take advantage of it. Well, when I told Reliant what I was considering, the young man promptly informed me that yes, TXU was doing the "free" power at night, but I should be aware that they would charge 0.14/kwh for the day service. Hmmm. Then he offered me a reduction in my current rate with Reliant, from the 0.114 I was paying, down to 0.09/kwh. Also, it would be retroactive for the bill I was about to receive. I agreed to a nine-month contract, so, when that bill arrived, it was for $245. That's a significant reduction, and all because I asked. I will be watching, when this contract runs out and will do some shopping again if necessary.

I did the same thing with my cell phone carrier a couple of years ago. I've been with AT&T since Dale got his first phone in about 1993. When someone else offered me a great rate, I called AT&T and asked them if they could match it. They not only matched it, they beat it, and I pay $30/month for my cell phone. Not too shabby.

I had to drive MIL home after church because Bruce had a deacon's meeting and she apologized and asked for my forgiveness for the things she had said. She told me she had prayed in church for the Lord to help her in that area because she seems to always say things that hurt the ones she loves the most. :)

Ro, I love what you shared in that first paragraph. Obviously the Lord knew what he was doing when he brought you and Dale together. I see alot of that kind of thing at work in my marriage, too (as do all of us, I suppose). Bruce is more like you, Ro, and I am the easy-going one. We compliment each other and he has had to light a fire under me a few times for my own good and I have helped to bring him to the point of taking the high road, especially with his difficult relatives.

Well, the weather is actually tolerable here today! Dry and in the high 80's and that is alot cooler than it has been. It sure feels nice...I think I am in for some porch sittin' this evening. Sure wish you all could join me.

And just one of many reasons why so many are concerned about a Govt. takeover of health care. Is it perfect now? Not close. But there are fixes that can be implemented beyond what we are having forced upon us. I don't remember who said it, but it rings true, if you think health care is expensive now, wait until it becomes free. Scares me.

things are rolling right along which is good. Ms. Beth is liking college life pretty well and Patrick continues to work his Co op job.

weather has been cooling down on my end of the porch. It is getting dark earlier and earlier and the evening are a bit cooler.

well guess I had better get breakfast ready! scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, oven toast, jelly, apple butter. coffee, tea and juice to drink. someone bring the paper.

Been up early getting things done around here. Mondays are always like that and I have to practically drag the kids out of the bed on Monday mornings. Already done some laundry, put on some black-eyed peas that I got at the farmer's market (making them for mom) and made some pumpkin bread. It is smelling like fall in here this morning.

FYI...I am always on the hunt for good fabric softener and usually buy the more expensive stuff. Well, the other day I took a chance on "Snuggle," which is considerably less expensive than Downey. It works better than Downey...the clothes were softer and the scent of the clothes was wonderful.

Well, I've got to run. I have physical therapy at 9:30, then an appointment with my gastroenterologist at 10:45. I really hate to keep this appointment (nothing wrong, it's just a routine checkup), because it will be the last time I'll see him. He's leaving, and I'll miss him. I first met him thirty years ago, when he was just a youngster, not long out of medical school, and I liked him very much. He was on staff at my hospital, so I saw him frequently. He's delightful, kind and compassionate, very good at his profession, and he will be missed. I'm supposed to choose one of his partners to assume my care, but I think I'll ask him to make the choice. I don't know any of them, and he knows me well, so he'll know who would be a good fit. Darn it, all the good ones are retiring. I wonder if they see the writing on the wall?

Four more days and I get to go home to my family for a couple weeks. My daughter called yesterday and said "Dad, I sure miss you".....It's so nice when a 23 year old still says that to her dad. Guys I'll tell you the truth...when I hung up, my eyes started leaking. What made it even tougher is I'm in the middle of writing a song for her wedding.....Hundred's of songs I've written, this is one of the hardest songs I've ever written.

My family were Ds historically, but jumped ship to vote for Reagan, and never looked back. I have to tell you, it took all my dear old grandma had to vote for JFK, though. His religion was a biiiig problem for her, but she bit the bullet and voted for him, because he was a Dem. She really couldn't clearly articulate just WHY his religion was a problem, it just was. Things have really changed, and they should. I often think, though, that we make a mistake when we refer to "religion" in such a case. It's not so much a religion, as it is a matter of denomination. As Aunt Bee said, "We're on the same side!" Now Islam vs Christianity - that's a difference in religion. I'm not looking to start a moulage here, I'm just interested in semantics in many areas, not just this one. If I've ruffled anyone, and you wish to respond, fire away - you got a legal right - but I won't fire back, and thus endeth any moulage.

Well, I've got a little rack of ribs slow-cooking in the oven, and they're starting to smell pretty good. Guess I'd better go check them. September 13, 2012 - Msg 90198: Good morning, porch! Boo, I'm sorry that Bruce is having to work through a difficult time. Just based on what you said, my guess is that you're right, he's feeling his own mortality. It happens to all of us, sooner or later, and is usually triggered by the loss of a peer. Remember Aunt Bee's reaction to the death of Augusta Finch? When Andy mentioned that she and Augusta weren't all that close, she barked at him - "Not close? She was just my age!!" I understand that very well. Just about the time you begin to have aches and pains, and visits to the doctor become almost routine, someone in your age group passes and it's scary. You said the co-worker died on the job. If Bruce witnessed any part of that scene, that would shake him up, understandably. Over my 33 years of nursing, I've witnessed many deaths, and don't necessarily remember each one, but that first one? Yep, every detail is still etched in my memory. Bruce will be okay, just give him time, and a little extra TLC. A little dose of praise and admiration for something he's done wouldn't hurt, either.

It's cloudy and 81° here today. I sure hope it rains, so I can shut the sprinklers down. My water bill for last month was a very scary document. Still, I can't just sit here at this window and watch everything die out there. It has been so hot that trees and shrubs are dying around town, and you can tell they've been watered, because there is green grass beneath them. Still, the heat just blasts them. Years ago, there was a big fad to plant pine trees in the strip between the sidewalk and the street, and lots of people did it. I don't care for them myself, and certainly not in that little narrow strip, but there are hundreds around town. My neighbor across the street has four, and every Christmas I gather the pine cones that fall in the street, and use them for decorating, so that's one good thing. Apparently pines don't handle the heat too well, because they're dying all over town. Kinda sad.

Thanks for the prayers and encouragment, friends. Bruce attended the funeral of his co-worker today. Ro, he didn't witness the man's death but he did see the family soon after and I know that was very hard on him. The man's death was a huge shock and you know how that shakes a family to its core. Bruce does seem better today, though.

Ro, I love pine trees so much and believe it or not, they grow well in my area. It seems they like the sandy soil and the heat doesn't seem to be bothering them. I want to eventually buy a few to plant here in the yard. Of course, seems like everything we plant out here ends up biting the dust (or should I say sand?)...except sticker burrs. Everything out here is brown right now and the ants got ahold of my rose bushes again!

It is still in the 90's here and was actually about 100 yesterday. Crazy, sick weather this late in the year! Might get some rain tomorrow, though.

Well, better finish cleaning the kitchen from dinner...

I was thinking about you when I was looking for a new bed for our master bedroom. I have looked and looked but can't find what I want. I did find one that I liked online, shaker furniture but it cost over $2,000. My husband said I can built it.....well it 's almost finished and should be home next week. We have friends that have a cabinet building business and that's where it's being built. The cost so far for the bed is $386.00.

It took me forever to settle on my bedroom furniture when we built the house and when it finally arrived, the bed was missing slats and one of the bedside tables was broken. It took a little time but finally got the slats and a new table. You would think with what you pay for furniture from a reputable company that you wouldn't go through such things. Good luck to you.

Ro, I am still looking for rugs, too. I am pretty well decided on braided rugs because they are the only thing that doesn't collect the stickers. The problem is that the darned things are expensive. I have a small one in front of my kitchen door to catch some of the sand when we come in that door, and it is the only one I have managed to keep the stickers out of.

Have a fun day off, Frankie. We are taking a day off today, too. We are going on a little shopping trip to town for Erin. The child has grown out of all her clothes. She is growing like a weed. Wish me luck...its not always easy to find decent things in her size (she is in a teen size now). I have lamented about this on the porch before so I guess I will not go into another tirade about girl's clothing in the stores.

It is cloudy and cooler here today and we actually got some rain---yahoo!

PS-that's right, G-F. Its all about the A/C. I seldom ever turn on the heat in the house. I like to put a fire in the fireplace on those few really cold days that we have. We have foam insulation in that seals the house so it takes alot of cold to make it cold in there, and a little heat from the fireplace goes a long way.

September 14, 2012 - Msg 90213: Oh, how I'd love to go to Mayberry Days! I've never been, and know it would just be so much fun, but it's a long way from Texas. Maybe some day....

I wish some of you would go on the Cruise to Mayberry. Eloise and I will be going again - I think this will be our fifth one. We've made a lot of friends, and look forward to seeing them each year. I don't know if there are still openings, but you can go the website and find out. On the imayberry.com site, the second listing in the sidebar on the right is "Event Calendar". That should take you to information about the cruise.

It's 69° right now, very cloudy, light wind blowing. Just almost chilly, believe it or not. It would be a wonderful day for weeding flowerbeds. Wish I could do it! Actually, I did pull weeds yesterday for about twenty minutes, and made a pretty good showing in a big bed out front. Sure looks better, but it about did me in. Oh well, I couldn't have done that at all two weeks ago, so I think I'm making progress.

It will never end, not until Jesus comes again. God told Isaac that his descendants would forever be troubled by the descendants of Ishmael. To try to remedy it, He gave Israel some instructions that they didn't fulfill. They ignored Him, and didn't complete the assignment. God told them then that there would forever be strife between the two cultures, and He was right. So now, the descendants of Ishmael are saying that they want to eradicate the nation of Israel completely. Well, good luck. God also said that he would preserve "a remnant" of His chosen people forever. So far, in spite of wars, enslavement, holocausts and unbelievable persecution, He has done exactly that. I have no reason to believe that He's going to fail them now.

G-F, one of these days, I'm going to do exactly that. Not this year, I can't afford it, but one of these days. Sure would be fun.

I am getting too upset and confused about what I am reading in the press, etc. It is so hard to know what or who to believe anymore and I am going to turn to the Lord for guidance in how I should pray and what I should believe. I'll start with His Word.

September 15, 2012 - Msg 90222: Boo, I know exactly what you mean about the news and current events being upsetting, and I agree with you about letting the Lord lead, as well. In addition, I've adopted a little habit that makes my family (especially Eloise) a little crazy, but it works for me. I just simply don't watch the news. It's mostly a rehash of the same old stuff anyway - somebody is rattling their saber, someone else is "offended" and vowing retaliation, somebody set off a bomb somewhere, etc., ad nauseum. If something really unusual and/or important happens, I'll hear about it by word of mouth. I do take the newspaper, but I let them build up, sometimes for two or three weeks. Then I open them, put them in chronological order, and get them ready for a marathon reading session. I pull all the slick-paper ads and put them in the recycle bag. Then I take out the front page section, the metro section, and the section that has Abby, Heloise and the comics. The rest goes in boxes to be taken to the Humane Society, where they shred them for pet bedding. When I have a long afternoon with nothing to do, I start with the oldest one and skim through it. Doesn't take long, as I just speed-read, slowing down for something interesting. The comic sections are stacked to be read later. (I love my comics!) Actually, this is a very good system, because if there's an ongoing story, like a murder trial or something, I don't have to wait to see how it comes out, I catch up in the next day's section. It's a lot more interesting this way, and I'm not bogged down with a bunch of trivial trivialities. I know, I'm a little nutty, but that's okay. I'm old enough to get away with it. Another year or so, and I can just claim to be "eccentric."

Well, maybe I'll go watch "I Love Lucy" - another favorite. I'll fall asleep in the middle, but it won't matter, because I've seen them all at least a hundred times. Blessings! --Romeena

As far as the $ part you could save up by selling "Miracle Salve". That problem solved!

As far as the Middle east problem is concerned, I think we should pipe in "WHY CAN'T WE BE FRIENDS" and bomb them with "Happy Meals" and Hershey bars,Cokes, and Levi jeans and Converse sneekers. Ya see those folks are just plane grumppy and they need to GET HAPPY :)..That problem solved!!

My husband is a Fox news junkie when he is home, I would rather be watching National geographic channel. I love American Pickers, Pawn Stars, Auction Kings, Project Runway and What Not To Wear and of course my very favorite Mayberry. There is a show on now called Here Comes Honey Boo Boo...I watched for about five minutes and was absolutely amazed how this show made it to TV. You now know my TV shows line up, what is yours

September 15, 2012 - Msg 90225: Well, Frankie, I have become a fan of "MeTV" and every morning I set the DVR to record Make Room For Daddy, My Three Sons, The Donna Reed Show, and That Girl. I don't always watch them all but I always watch My Three Sons. Other than that, I sometimes watch TAGS, Waltons or Little House. I guess I'm sorta boring. ;)

Well, it is in the 70's here this morning and the dogs are acting like its Christmas. So nice to have a little relief from the awful heat we have had this summer. It will be back in the 90's by tomorrow, though.

September 15, 2012 - Msg 90226: Good morning, porch! Boo, we've got you beat by a few degrees, but not much. It's 66° here, very cloudy and absolutely still, not a leaf moving or a bird or squirrel to be seen anywhere. I have the feeling it's going to "coma a somethin"" as Sophia said on "Golden Girls." I guess we'll see pretty soon.

Y'all have pretty much described my TV preferences, with the exception of "Project Runway" - I've just never sampled that one, so don't know if I'd like it or not. I do really enjoy all the old reruns, though. A big favorite is the "Dick Van Dyke Show." As for that misbegotten "Honey Boo Boo" thing, it's disgusting. I don't like "Toddlers and Tiaras", and I sure don't like "Honey Boo Boo." In the first place, that little girl is undoubtedly the most obnoxious, annoying child I've ever seen. I could never be in close proximity to her, because I just know I'd go upside her head. I feel guilty, because it's not her fault, it's the fault of that horrible mother of hers, who has made her what she is, but honestly, that kid's behavior is like fingernails on a blackboard. Actually, that whole family could be the poster family for "dysfunctional." As my own lady mother would have said, "Humph! Tacky, tacky, tacky!"

I do enjoy "American Pickers." I like Frank and Mike, and it's fun to see all the stuff they come up with. I know - it's one continuous bargaining session, but it's still fun. Still, my home channels are pretty much MeTV, NatGeo, Hallmark, and occasional returns to TVLand, usually just for TAGS. Most of their reruns are of things I would never have watched, and sure don't want to watch now. I also like "Murder She Wrote" and of course, "Perry Mason." The young Raymond Burr makes me think so much of my Dale - the same powerful build and physical grace, but most of all, his eyes. Oh yes, those eyes! Dale had those gorgeous eyes, and he passed them on to his children, especially the oldest daughter and youngest son. Sometimes I look at David and just can't believe how much like his father he is. Anyway, I guess I have sort of a "crush" on Raymond Burr, at least as he looked in the early "Perry Mason" shows.

Well, enough of that. I have things to do today. I hope I can find the self-discipline to get them done! Blessings! -- Romeena

Frankie, up here in Canada, we watch All In The Family, I Love Lucy, and Golden Girls on the DejaVu channel. We also enjoy Family Feud on the Game channel and Judge Judy on a Buffalo TV channel. And when we find an interesting old black and white movie on the Turner Classic Movie channel, we watch that.
There is one program that I enjoy but it is not shown in Canada, only in the USA. That is The Locator on WeTv.

September 15, 2012 - Msg 90229: What a touching story! I've always known that dogs grieve for people they love. Sugarplum's silent grief was heartbreaking, after I lost Dale. She moped, lay by the door at the times he normally would be coming home, jumped and ran to the door at the slightest sound, and spent a lot of time lying beneath his desk. Other animals grieve as well. Elephants mourn their own dead, and there's a documented case of a herd mourning the death of a human friend. http://tinyurl.com/9v78p63. I believe there is a depth of comprehension and emotion within the heart of most animals, that we have never realized or explored. Maybe that's why I just can't bear cruelty in any form. Tom, I know how tired you must be, waiting on your stepdad all the time. He may be grumpy at times too, and that's hard to accept. Trust me, though - one of these days, he'll be gone, and you will miss him, but most of all, you will be very, very glad you did the things for him that you do today.
