September 01, 2012 - Msg 90060: Good to see you, Sterling. Sorry about the tooth situation. I had all four wisdom teeth out under local when I was in my late 20's. I do remember the "cracking" and one of the teeth was hard to get out but it wasn't bad. As a nurse, I was more nervous about anesthesia than pain so went with the local. Mine didn't hurt bad afterward like your's. I guess I was lucky but I remember I couldn't take the pain med because it made me sick so just took tylenol. Hope you are healed up quickly without complications.

Woke up early, as usual...I was so looking forward to sleeping in on Saturday morning but my internal clock just won't let me, darn it.

Better finish the coffee. I'm going to visit a nearby farmer's market this morning and see if there is anything worth buying to can. See ya all later.

Boo

September 01, 2012 - Msg 90061: Good morning, porch! Sterling, my best suggestion would be an ice pack to help dull the pain. Ice works wonders. When my back was hurting so bad, ice helped. I can't take pain meds, not at all, or I will throw up food I haven't eaten yet, so even after neck surgery and then back surgery, all I had was Tylenol. I couldn't even take Advil, as the surgeon didn't want to suppress the inflammatory process, since that sort of jumpstarts bone growth. So - try a couple of Tylenol and an ice pack. Should help!

Two of my nurse friends from work came by this morning, and I made breakfast for them. Just pancakes and bacon, and some cantaloupe and juice - all easy, no trouble. We had a good visit. Sounds like things are still a mess at work, more nurses have left, the L&D manager left and our mom-baby manager is covering. She's spread too thin, and things are not going well. Makes me glad I'm on medical leave. I hope things have settled down by the time I go back.

Well, I'm needing a nap. I was up at 6:30, which is very early for me. Guess I'll go tidy up the kitchen, and then crash somewhere. Blessings, all! --Romeena

September 02, 2012 - Msg 90066: Ok, G-F. I have to admit, I've never seen "Car 54 where are you?" but I will have to check that out on youtube.

Thanks for the suggestions. I found a site called "AVVO" where you can ask questions and then doctors registered there can answer you. It is quite helpful. I took some ibuprofen and that helped. More than the pain reliever the oral surgeon gave me. I was finally able to sleep more than one hour today.

And yep, that ice does help, thank you Romeena.

You had all four wisdom teeth taken out with a local, Boo? You're braver than I am. When I had mine out(for some reason, I was born with only two wisdom teeth. I guess I am not that wise.), I had the IV sedative. Yeah, I was apprehensive about it, but it was worth it then. I felt absolutely no pain whatsoever, even a long time after the procedure, and it seemed like it took only seconds for them to take them out.

I contrast that with this time when I took only the local, and it seemed to take forever. Not much pain, but I actually got bored with it taking so long. :)

Yeah Ro, like G-F said, "what's your hurry?" You should put on a relaxing band concert or something. ;)

September 02, 2012 - Msg 90069: Good morning, porch! Looks like everyone is up and at 'em this fine day. I got a very good night's sleep, in fact slept right through getting up for church, so am just hanging out with Toye Starr this morning. I'm sitting here at my window, looking out at the beauty God has crafted out there, and feeling like it's just all for me! I think that's how He wants us to feel, that He loves us individually and sends us personal gifts, like my Angel Face roses blooming so beautifully out there, and the little hummer that comes and hovers in front of my window, looking in at me.

Sterling, I'm glad the ice helped, and yes, Ibuprofen often works better than the narcotic pills. That's because it gets at the cause of the problem - the swelling and inflammation - and reduces them, which of course decreases the pain. Narcotic pills just dull the pain briefly, and then you're back where you started. Besides, they make me so sick that I'd just rather hurt.

MDC, your joke about the "horse pills" reminds me of a story that actually happened years ago, at work. We're all adults here, so I guess I can tell it. As we know, yeast infections can be very annoying, particularly when they afflict those of the female persuasion. You girls know what I mean. Well, yeast can attack other places as well, and men are not immune. We had a young male patient who was being treated for a bad bacterial pneumonia, so was on high-powered antibiotics. Those antibiotics kill off the bad bugs, but they also kill the beneficial bacteria that inhabit us, which normally keep things such as yeast at bay. Kill those bugs, and yeast gets a foothold. That's what happened to my patient, and he had a raging yeast infection in his mouth, similar to the "thrush" that babies often develop. Well, his doc prescribed those little almond-shaped anti-fungal tablets that girls sometimes have to use to kill off a yeast infection. No, you don't swallow them. You just leave them in the area of yeast contamination and let them dissolve, so he was told to use the tablet by allowing it to melt in his mouth. Well, some idiot nurse told that man what those tablets are usually used for, and he went ballistic. He yelled and screamed, demanded to see his doctor, accused us of poisoning him with "filthy tablets" and was totally unreasonable. He threatened malpractice suits, tried to throw up, just completely acted like a horse's patoot. His doctor finally came in and calmed him down, and let him think he was changing his medication. Actually, he just had us dissolve the tablet in water, and have him swish-and-spit several times a day with the "mouthwash", and the guy was happy. His yeast infection cleared up, too!

Well, I have some pancake batter left over from yesterday morning, and the griddle is still out, so I think I'll go make me some pancakes. There will still be batter left, so maybe I'll bake it all, and share with the backyard critters. Maybe I'll put a few chopped pecans in them, too. I'll certainly put them in mine! Blessings, friends! --Romeena

September 02, 2012 - Msg 90072: All I can say about that story, Ro, is "Ewww"...not because of the usual course of treatment they are used for, but because I'll but the medicine tasted bad while melting in the mouth. I would have taken it though because thrush in one's mouth can be a very miserable thing. I remember Sean getting it once when he was little, after a strong antibiotic and we let his swish his mouth with lidocaine before trying to eat or drink anything...poor little guy was miserable and it looked so painful. His gums even got so red and bled.

Well, preachin' was good. I just ate a sandwich and am going to lie down for awhile and then Bruce and I are going to take a drive somewhere and just enjoy some time together on our anniversary.

I can't stand a bully, and I love to see them get their come-uppance. Reminds me of one of our respiratory therapists who told what her grandma did. Seems grandpa came in roaring drunk one time too many, knocked her around some and passed out drunk across the bed. Grandma picked herself up off the floor and quietly got a large upholstery needle and some very strong thread. She folded the bedspread over him, then sewed the thing together so he was encased like in a cocoon. It took about an hour, with him snoring away. Then she got a broom handle and proceeded to beat the snot out of him. He passed out again, she cut the thread and put the bedspread back in place. He woke up the next morning with no clear memory of what had happened, but wondering about all the bruises. Grandma just told him he was raving about being in a bar fight when he got home, so she guessed he must have gotten beaten up. He never knew for sure, but he never came in drunk or raised a hand to her again. Whatever works, I guess.

Yes, I could tell some hospital stories, and I know Boo could as well. Most of them are a bit too indelicate for this forum, so maybe I will write that book someday.

I spent the evening at Eloise's - we had burgers and hotdogs, and she made ice cream. Yum! Now I'm home, and ready for some TV and a cuddle with Toye Starr, then off to bed. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Its pretty sad the situations people get themselves into and then have to face the humiliation of getting medical treatmetn.

Boo

September 04, 2012 - Msg 90092: Here's a funny one for you, Ro. We once had a patient come in to the labor unit and she had a very unusual tattoo that covered her private area. It said, "Hello Sunny" and we all tried to ignore it. Finally one of the bolder nurses just had to ask about it. The patient said she got it before the birth of her first baby, who's name is Sunny. HAHA...can you imagine?!

Boo

September 04, 2012 - Msg 90093: Omigosh, Boo, that's hilarious! Just follow that thought on out - the possibilities are endless! First of all, obviously the newborn couldn't read, so the whole thing was pointless anyway, at that time. So then, after the child grows up and learns to read - is she going to show her the tattoo?? I hope not! Good grief! The things people do! Tattoos in general just baffle me. I know, lots of people have them, and that's their right, and even I don't mind a discreet, tasteful tattoo, if it has some special meaning. But a sunflower that covers some girl's entire abdomen? A Zodiac that does the same thing? "Hello Sunny"? Do these people not realize that they're going to be old someday, God willing, and that tattoo isn't going to be quite so charming on a flabby, wrinkled old body? Actually, I guess they don't. I know when I was young, I thought I would always be slim, and strong, and creaky joints would never afflict me. Who knew?

The view from my window this morning is so pretty. Roses - which should have been pruned, but weren't - are blooming anyway. Little Angel Face is trying to cover itself with blooms, even though it has some long and lanky unpruned canes. Determined little thing, Angel Face. Mr. Lincoln has at least twelve spectacular blooms, on long stems, typical of that rose. I could cut them and make a beautiful bouquet for the house, but I really enjoy them more when they're left on the bush. Double Delight is starting to pop, and out front, Cinco de Mayo and Our Lady of Guadalupe are blooming. Some snapdragons that I thought had succumbed to the heat have perked up and decided to bloom again. Out behind the pond, some chives I had planted a few years ago have multiplied and right now have sent up two-foot-tall stalks with a big fluffy white bloom head on top. I didn't realize chives would spread like that, but they have. I need to dig some of it out, and confine it to one area. Who needs a whole garden of chives? Sure is nice to cut some of it and snip it onto a baked potato, though! It's really good if you melt a little butter in a small pan over low heat, snip the chives into the butter, add a little fresh dill and some chopped garlic, maybe some chopped basil, and soften the herbs in the warm butter, then pour it over your potato. Or over just about anything, for that matter. It makes a quick and very tasty sauce/glaze for lots of things. Great stirred into green peas, especially the frozen ones, not so much the canned kind.

Well, I'm making myself hungry! Guess what I'll be having for dinner tonight, along with two burger patties I brought home from Eloise's last night. There were six left over, so I left them four and brought two home, we'll all have a good dinner tonight. I'll warm those patties in a little steak sauce, and make my herb glaze to go over a veggie, and I have three ears of corn. I'll cook all three, eat maybe one and a half, and cut the remainder off the cob for another meal. Cut corn, warmed in a little butter, with salt and pepper and a dollop of sour cream added, is just delish! Being alone, I cook in small amounts (finally - it took years to get used to it) and I have some tiny pans, one is a skillet about four inches in diameter. You'd be amazed at how handy that little pan is!

Well, I need to take Toye Starr to Dr. Mike - she needs a pawdicure, and I'm entirely too chicken to cut her nails myself. I can remove staples and sutures from a patient, change the dressing on horrendous wounds, but I can't clip my dog's nails. Go figure. So, off we go. Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

Just got back from taking Toye Starr for her pawdicure. Dr. Mike said she didn't have toenails, she had talons, and he was right. Her nails hadn't been clipped in about three months. The back ones were very short, didn't need clipping (they're her "drivers" and she keeps them worn down), but the front ones were veeery long! She was so nervous when we got there, that she pooped on herself, the little twit. Now, THAT

September 04, 2012 - Msg 90099: Oh, shoot! I hate when that happens. Anyway, to continue - Now, that was a delight! The little poo was caught in the long hair on her tail and hiney. It wasn't a lot, but it was enough! I got some tissues and pulled most of it off, then wet a paper towel and washed what I could. Then Dr. Mike came in, grabbed some scissors and cut away the rest of the soiled hair - said he was "clearing a drop zone" for her. He's a hoot. I've known Mike for nearly forty years, and he's taken care of my dogs for at least thirty of those years. He really has a way with animals, I've seen him calm a nervous dog, even a fear-biter like my daughter's dog was, and handles them with ease. Starr is fine when he's in the room, but she gets very nervous in the waiting room. I don't know if she can smell the fear of other animals, or what, but this isn't the first time she has disgraced herself. Poor little thing. All is well now, though. She's home, with pretty toes, and is curled up in her favorite cuddle bed.

With all this talk about bats, I was wondering if you folks can help me with a partial memory from my childhood. We were on vacation somewhere in the US when we stopped at a large open area. There we noticed a wooden box shaped enclosure mounted at the top of a very long flight of stairs. The large lettered sign stated something like COME SEE THE YELLOW BATS. Well I remembered seeing pictures of Western Yellow Bats in school. So I had to climb those stairs and see them in person. There must have been at least 100 steps to climb, so I was out of breath when I reached the top. But when I looked through the slotted opening, I was both surprised and upset. All I could see was a bunch of yellow baseball bats inside the enclosure!
Does anyone remember this tourist attraction and where it is located?

My absolute most favorite telethon moment occurred back in 1976. Before watching the video, here is a little background information. Up through 1956, Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin were a very popular comedy team. Then something happened in 1956 and they split up. In fact, they didn't even talk to each other for a long time. I have to share something that happened to me last night that is pretty funny. It was about 9pm and I was on a 2-way highway near the house. It is one of those roads that I don't like to drive on at night because it is narrow and people tend to drive fast and crazy on it. There is also two or three bars on along the road. So there I was being very careful and I see cop lights behind me. I pull over and can't figure out what must be wrong...thinking I might have a break light out or something. Well the cop comes to the passenger side window and asks for my license and insur@nce, which I give him and he says, "Ma'am, have you been drinking?"...."Uh, no, why??"...."Well, you were swerving some and going between 45 and 50 in a 60 zone. Were you aware?"...."No, don't recall swerving at all". He went to the back of the car to get my license and the whole thing was so crazy I couldn't help but sit there and laugh. I have not had a drink since the early 80's! Visions of Otis and Barney flashed before my eyes and I was hoping I wouldn't have to get out and walk a line or close my eyes and touch my nose (or hop up and down on one foot..hehe). Finally the cop came back, handed me my license and told me to be careful. I said something about how I didn't know I was swerving and then he said, "You were driving on the white line and going too slow" (huh?!)... I said "Well, this is a scary road at night" and he mumbled something about wild hogs on the road at night. I just let it go. What he didn't seem to realize is the reason I had swerved over into the shoulder was because some idiot driver in the oncoming lane had swerved over into my lane to pass another driver. How does someone get pulled over for suspected DUI because they are driving safely? HAHA...it was all so crazy. I though you all could appreciate the humor in it. People drive crazy around here, though and you can't be too careful at night. Just the other day a co-worker of my sister-in-law was killed on the highway because of some guy who had road rage and stopped in front of a tractor-trailor, making the tractor-trailor hit his breaks, which caused my SIL's coworker to run into the back of him and he was killed. The guy who caused his death fled the scene but was caught later.

Well, better get back to Erin.

September 06, 2012 - Msg 90123: Boo & Romeena, What's this I'm reading about the speed limit in parts of Texas going up to 85? Ya know if ya give 'em 85 & then they'll go 90 ya give 'em 90 they'll go 100 where does it end?
SPEED, SPEED, SPEED! Gives a whole new meaning to "Pulled Pork" if one of those hogs run out in front of you at those speeds...G-F..

September 06, 2012 - Msg 90124: Good evening, porch. Tom, I'm sorry about your loss. Will pray for you and your family, my friend.

G-F, apparently there is a plan in process to raise the speed limit on certain roads. Here's a link: http://tinyurl.com/8fnraas

There are stretches out in West Texas where you can see for miles, not so much as a bush to obstruct your view, and the roads are straight and flat. High speeds on such roads is not going to be as dangerous as it would be on the average highway, and as I understand it, the new speed limits will be posted only on roads deemed "safe", if there really is such a thing. I have mixed feelings about it. I've been on some of those roads, and have looked down at my speedometer only to be shocked to see it showing 80 or more. I would immediately slow down, and then it felt like I was crawling. Still, a sudden tire failure, or the unexpected appearance of some form of wildlife, and you have a problem. So, I guess we'll just wait and see how it turns out. And yes, your joking comment above may turn out to be prophetic, though at such speeds I think it would be more like "pork patties." There are those who will always exceed the limit, no matter what it is, if their car will produce the speed. You wonder whether there's a limit at all.

Well, I saw a dermatologist this morning about a little swelling I've had on my lower lip, that had me a little concerned. However, she says it's just a tiny clogged duct, and should resolve soon. Actually, it's gotten smaller in the last couple of days, so I think it's going away. With my history, I tend to check things out pretty quickly, don't let something sneak up on me. I trust this doctor, and if she says it's nothing, then that's good enough for me.

Well, got some emails to answer, so off I go. See you good folks tomorrow. Blessings! --Romeena

September 06, 2012 - Msg 90125: OK Gang just when you think you have heard just about enough about bats check out this link:

Spot, my prayers are with you friend. Keep hanging in there. I am hanging with my pop,
and praying for everyone. (:
GF- I tried that link and it said that that video was not available. Maybe the bats flew away. ha
PH- I couldnt find anything about the yellow bat tourist trap, but you know in AZ we have "The Thing" tourist trap along I-10! Dont be tricked!
Burma Shave is real, the "thing" is fake! ha
RO- Texas just do everything "bigger!" ha
BOO- why didnt you just tell the cop about the oncoming car? Afterall, he he saw YOU swerve, you think he would have also have seen the idiot coming into your lane!! Strange.
Well, have a good evening all.

September 07, 2012 - Msg 90127: OK, the conventions are over.... and I have decided to vote for the Taylor/Fife ticket! (:

September 07, 2012 - Msg 90128: Well G-F the video wouldn't work for me either. It said to try later, same bat time, same bat station!

We have a section of I-15 in central Utah that is posted at 80 (maybe 85, It's been a while since I've been through there). I'm kind of a stickler to speed limits cause I have a C.D.L. and if I don't have any moving violations I don't have to retest when I renew it. A big incentive to "obey all rules". So I seldom speed, and am always feeling I'm doing 10 to 15 mph slower than the rest of the world. So when driving through there a few years ago I thought it would be fun to stay up with traffic. HA! Big joke. I was doing 80 while everyone else was doing 90. Like Romeena explained, this is a part of the State with little traffic, and fairly straight, although there are some steep inclines, and you really gotta mash down on the old pedal to keep it at 80. But, there are deer in the area that on occasion feel the need to jay walk. There is a stretch of I-15 between Las Vegas and Los Angles that ought to be at least 85 though. Mile after mile of nothingness. And most folks are doing that fast anyway. I know, speed speed speed, that's all I think about.

Possum, how's things going for you? Better I hope. You are still in my prayers.

Been nursing a sore back this week. My doc got me re-aligned, but it takes a few days for the spasms to loosen up.

Prayers for all.

Boo- I'll break our pledge for a moment and say
what happened. They were voting on the "platform" about any reference to God being removed. The chairman was hoping for a magority voice vote to put God back in, but even tho the NOs were louder than the YESes, he still claimed the yeses won, and then the delegates booed because God had been put back in!! Very strange indeed and a sign of the times I'm afraid.!!

Boo...I just watched the "leg a lamb" episode last night in the motorhome:)

Folks...like MDC posted above....afraid this is things to come. Further away from God....that's the way our nation is heading but all the reason that we (Christians) draw closer to him!

I better get to bed. Think I'll crawl back here in the motorhome and watch me another ep of TAGS....sounds good to me:)

September 07, 2012 - Msg 90146: Good evening, porch! Been a busy day - starting with an hour of physical therapy, and it was one solid hour. Wore me plumb out! Finished up with a fun evening with the bunco girls - good meal furnished by the hostess, and then about two hours of play, with lots of laughs at the same time.

Boo, I am humbled by your kind regard for my opinion. Just remember, free advice is usually worth just about what you paid for it. So MIL is giving you fits again? Bless her nutty little heart! What's going on?

Well, guess I'll turn in, maybe watch a little TAGS first. Toye Starr has about dug a hole in my ankle, trying to get my attention, so get I'd better give her a cuddle. Spoiled little thing. Blessings! --Romeena

September 08, 2012 - Msg 90148: I heard some talk radio hosts say that the two conventions would illustrate some stark differences between the two party's, and boy was they ever right. We often hear there is little difference between candidates or party's. I do think the difference this cycle is very clear and very evident. And the results will be very telling where we are as a Nation. O.K. Enough from me on that.

Boo, I'm telling ya, that's all they understand is a leg a lamb! But, Romeena may have better advice, so hear her out. :)

Going to a Grandsons football game this morning. His Dad is the Coach, and they are not having so good a year this year. Last year they were 2 and 0 at this point. This year they are 0 and 2. Hey, builds character, right?

Prayers for all.

September 08, 2012 - Msg 90149: Yup, leg-o-lamb; yup, that will do the trick. (:

September 08, 2012 - Msg 90150: APB for Big Maude

September 08, 2012 - Msg 90151: Well,Asa, in this case Bruce's older brother Richard got a call from MIL that she needed to talk to him (which translates "I want to complain to you about Bruce and Julie")...he went over there and gave her a big piece of his mind, minced no words and came by here afterward to tell us that anytime we wanted him to bawl her out, just call him. HAHA...pretty funny. We'll see if she behaves for a little while now. As Ro said, "bless her nutty little heart"...MIL's heart is indeed, nutty. ;)

Went to the farmer's market today and got a few things but not much available. It has been so hot here that we have broken records all over the place with consecutive days above 100! It's like living in Arizona. Everyone's gardens and plants are dying...no green grass anymore...just awful. The weatherman kept talking about some kind of cool front, which meant instead of 103, it is going to be 93. Whoop-dee-do. C'mon cooler weather!!
