I have been scarce the last few days because we had a storm so bad here that I lost internet access. We had 10 tornados touch down in our area, which has never been heard of. This weather is like something out of a science fiction movie.

Well, just said goodbye the mom-in-law and will rest a bit and then visit my mother. I will be back later to read up on what i missed the last few days and chat some more.

May 13, 2012 - Msg 88556: Thanks for all the Mother's Day wishes. Church was sweet and the Deacons took care of the nurseries so all moms could be in church this morning.

My sister-in-law was visiting from out of town and she and mom-in-law came for lunch. After that I went to see my mom and took her some strawberry shortcake. She was doing ok but she is feeling kind of lost with all that is going on in St. Susan's family. Her son, Matt, who seperated from his wife is living back at home and still having a tough time. I can't go into the details but Matt has had his heart broken into a million pieces and it is hard to see him go through it. Please lift a prayer for him. It is hard on everyone right now. I had not witnessed the pain of this kind of thing firsthand until now and I not realized how hard it really is to see a family split apart.

The kids were great today. Sean had driven to the mall yesterday and gone to Bath and Body Works and bought me my favorite shower gel, lotion and perfume spray. He picked out the perfect card, too and has just been so sweet today. He even reached out and held my hand today during the singing in church. :) He's such a good son and growing into a fine young man.

Well, guess I will go spend some time with the family before bed. See you in the morning with my coffee.

May 14, 2012 - Msg 88559: Good Monday morning all. I hope you all had a wonderful Mothers day yesterday. We did. Had all the family over and the kids cooked shiskabobs and brawts and dogs. Had a good time.

G-F, I dunno how I'm gonna get that septic tank here. Maybe UPS?

Boo, that is such a nice story about Sean. I think one of the greatest blessings of a righteous life is that of seeing your children grow up to become wonderful young men and women, and who have kept true to the Faith. I can't think of anything that is more glorious than that. It is a bit like planting a garden in the spring, and tending to it all through the summer, the weeding, the watering, the sweat and effort that goes into it, and then in the Fall, enjoying the pay off, of fresh vegetables, fruit, and what not to enjoy. All the hard work done during the season of growing, produces a wonderful harvest.

Rev, a great way to start the week with you buying us breakfast. I'm in buddy.

Lucy, good to see you. Hope your ankle is healing.

Better get going. Lot's to do today. But my co-worker who had the heart attack a while back is due back to work today, so that will be a big help.

May 15, 2012 - Msg 88572: Morning Porch.

Happy Birthday to your Dad MDC. 94 years young. Good on him. Can you imagine all the things he has seen take place in his lifetime.

Rev, I love maters also, but they don't love me so much. They get my tummy churning if I eat to many. It's a shame because the area I live in is noted for tomater growing. Oh well, thats life, through and through. My first planting of corn is almost 6 inches tall now. So barring a late season frost, I'm gonna have some early pickins this year for a change.

The tornadoes leaving you alone now Boo? Glad we don't get those around here often. I always marvel at how real the tornado on the Wizard of Oz looks. Or at least it's how I would imagine it would look like.

Hope everyone has a wonderful and safe day.

Asa

May 15, 2012 - Msg 88573: Happy Birthday to your dad, MDC. You are so blessed! :)

106 degrees??!! Yuck. It has been a little cooler than usual here this weekend but our cool days are over until October or November.

Yes Asa, the tornadoes are gone. It was seriously very strange. I think if it had happened during the day it would have been easier but it was late evening and you couldn't see anything. If there is a tornado coming, I want to see it, if you know what I mean! There was so much lightening that it looked almost like continuous daylight at times, though. There were even winds up to 100 mph and flooding. It was alot like a smaller hurricane...strange stuff. We had some grain silos a few miles west of us that got tore up and some houses had 4x4s driven through their brick exteriors, and such but no other bad damage or injury.

Asa, I thought about you the other day because I bought some ears of sweet corn from the Sprouts grocery store, thinking they might be good. Wowza! That was THE best sweet corn I have ever had in my life. All I can say is that we savored every bite of those things drenched in real butter and a little salt. Hope your's is as good or better.

Yesterday was an interesting day. My sis-in-law who tends to bring drama with her has been listening to my mom-in-law's "stories". MIL has been trying to get SIL to move down and take care of her so she is acting extremely feeble and lying about how nobody does anything for her down here. This is a big slap in the face to me and Bruce, who have been doing for her for several years when nobody else has. It is a slap, not so much because of what she has been saying, but because my SIL is believing her. She knows how her mom is and has been a victim of her tales for years, and yet, she is still swallowing the deceit. I am so tired of this kind of thing that has been going on for years. I have been praying and trying find my way in all of this as a Christian. I know MIL is nearly 80 and she doesn't think right. She is probably insecure and fearful of what will happen to her and is trying to manipulate people and circumstances to relieve her anxiety. I have always been understanding but honestly, it is about to drive me crazy. I want to throw my hands up and say "enough" and just walk away forever from her but I don't see how I can do that. We take her to church every sunday and I am we are her only relatives within 30 miles. She has alway been manipulative and deceitful an she isn't going to change at her age so what do I do? Talking doesn't help...ever. We have been down that road too many times to count. I am going to have a talk with SIL today and tell her that is she is believing the stories and thinks we aren't taking care of her mother (ridiculous) then she is now welcome to move down here and care for her herself or find a suitable nursing home. I am telling you, every time this SIL comes for a visit, there is trouble and I am always the scapegoat. Its ironic that Bruce and I (and Sean) are the ones who do practically everything for her. She has been living with us or within a mile of us for 5 years now. I need a break. I have said it so many times to her other children that I am not going to be the one responsible for her when she can no longer care for herself. I have my own mother and my children. Each of them has no children at home and no inlaws. They only have their mom to think about.

Sorry for blowing off steam but I just needed to.

Better go see how Erin is doing...

Asa...hope you have a good harvest on your corn. It's something about northern corn that is different. I love the corn down south but I don't know if it's the soil or what but the corn up north just seems sweeter.....it's so good. Hopefully it will be in early in Maine while I'm up there in July.
My dad had me to bring some seeds home from up there several years ago. He planted them but just wouldn't grow down here. Strange

Boo

May 15, 2012 - Msg 88578: Good evening, porch! Boo, I'm sorry you're having to put up with this nonsense once again. Seems like it boils up every so often. Problem is, there's very little you can do to defend yourself. SIL secretly feels guilty because she knows she's not holding up her end of the deal, so she's quick to place blame on those who are doing what she should be doing herself. I saw this so many times when I was working on the med/surg floors. The worn-out family member who had been doing all the work (yes, frequently a DIL) had to take all sorts of criticism from others who came sweeping in on their white horses, all full of demands and criticism. Very often the patient, not fully competent and feeling a bit pitiful, would grab onto the new arrival like they were the Savior, and add fuel to the whole thing with wild tales of neglect. It can get very ugly.

How many siblings are there? Here's a scenario that might work. Call the group together and say something like this: "I am so glad this has come up. There are times that I know I'm not giving Mom all the care and attention she needs (or say "wants", but try not to sound snarky), and I feel bad about that, but I have my own children who need my attention as well. So, I'm happy that you've shown an interest in Mom's welfare. I take that to mean that you would be willing to participate in her care. So, here's what I propose: There are three (whatever number is true) of you children, including Bruce. I know I'm just a DIL, but Bruce and I are a team, and I'm willing to continue with our share of participation. So, that means that each of us would be responsible for Mom for four months each year (however the math works out). Mom apparently has been unhappy being here with just me to care for her, so she shouldn't mind moving around, and getting to spend time with each of her children. So, we will sell (or rent or whatever) her home, and she will move from family to family, every few months. That way, we can all have our time with her, it won't overwhelm anyone, and she will get to be with all of her children regularly. Ok, who's first?"

I promise you, there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth, and many explanations of why this one or that one can't participate. That's when you just shrug, and say, "Well, that was my suggestion. What's yours?" In other words, force them to admit that what they want is for you to take care of their mom, while they get off scot-free. You won't win any popularity contests at this point, but do you care? It's also likely that nothing will change in the distribution of MIL's care, but at least the others will probably shut up. They won't want to rile you again and risk you actually implementing your plan. Of course, in order for this to work, Bruce has to be with you, 100%.

Well, guess I'd better go get ready for work. Don't feel like going, but have no choice. I guess I can do anything for twelve hours. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

May 16, 2012 - Msg 88585: There are so few people on the porch these days...makes me sad.

Thank you for the advice Romeena, really good as usual. I took my stand with the other kids this weekend, and big brother stepped up and has offered to come each week and take her to the store and do odd jobs she might need. Sis-in-law Vicki, who was causing the drama now understands that I am taking a break from all responsibility and she is going to have to leave me out of it. She has spent three days her with her mother and come to the conclusion that mom is driving her absolutely crazy and there is a slim chance that she will ever be able to live with her...the idea of a nursing home in the future is suddenly not out of the question, according to her. MIL's oldest daughter still refuses to have anything to do with her mother...never even called or sent a card on mother's day, so that is not an avenue that will ever be open, in my opinion. Bruce has told me that I am not to do anything for his mother, or answer her calls. She has a life alert necklace for emergencies. For all other things she can call one of her other children. He wants me to stay away from his mother if there is any hope of reconcilling that relationship in the future. She has told numerous lies to her other children about how I don't do anything for her and told my SIL, "Bruce wouldn't treat me this way he does if he hadn't married HER!" (in her mind I am responsible for everything wrong in her life, I guess). I could go on and on about the ugly comments and such, which I won't do. After the last 5 years of having her live with me when she needed help, taking her to church, having her at my house or my sister's for every holiday and celebration for the last 5 years, taking her to appointments, trying to keep her happy and cared for, none of it has ever endeared me to her in the least. I'm getting tired of being betrayed time and again by her. This isn't just an elderly problem. She has been this way for as long as any of her children can remember. She has something very wrong in that head of hers. This is hard for me as a Christian. If things continue as they are, I will end up with resentments and I don't need that. Am I doing the right thing by leaving her to herself and maybe teaching her that she can't treat me this way? I am torn about it. Now here's the big question....Whatever happened to NICE little old ladies? ;)

Better see how Erin is getting on with her schoolwork.

Boo

PS-...and I sure want to get "SNARKY" with her but won't do it! ;)

May 16, 2012 - Msg 88595: Good grief! Give you people a new word, and you act like you just discovered fire. (Was that a snarky comment?) Hahahaha!

Seriously, Boo, it sounds like you've got the situation in hand. Apparently they now understand that you're not going to be the chief caretaker anymore, and that is as it should be. You are doing them an indirect favor, because in time to come, each of them will look back on the time they spent helping their mother (never mind that it was forced on them) and they'll feel good about it. As for the daughter who has cut herself off, look for her to reappear when it comes time to divide the pie, even if the pie turns out to be nothing more than a cookie. She'll be there for her share, even if there are only crumbs. Also, by the time she gets through telling it as she sees it, it will sound like she was the only one who ever cared about dear old mom. I spent seventeen years on the med/surg floors, watching this scenario play out over and over again, and it always seemed to be a DIL who got dumped on.

Well, guess I'll go rustle up some grub. Let's see - I've got a can of chili, some tortillas, a little lettuce, an onion and some cheese. No fresh tomato, but I have some canned diced ones, and they work if well-drained. I think I'll make what my family calls tacoladas. They're sort of a cross between tacos and enchiladas, and very good. Make up in about ten minutes, and are delish! I could make them when I was eight, and they've been a default meal all my life. Oh, I also have a ripe avodado! Sounds like guacamole to me! Come on over, I'll make extra. Oh, I have some salsa and some chips, too. Yum!

Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

May 16, 2012 - Msg 88597: Oh, about the gambling thing. Boy, Goober-Fife and Tom, are you ever right. It's the biggest mess, every time it comes up, and Texas is right there in it. Years ago, it was hotly contested here, and our former governor, old Ann Richards, pushed hard for it. She stood and flatly stated in a public, televised speech, that if the voters allowed it in, the proceeds would be used to fund education in Texas. Well, it was voted in, and the money goes into many pockets, but none of them are marked "education." Much later, she denied ever saying such a thing, until someone showed her a clip of the speech. Sound of crickets chirping.

It's nothing but an unacknowledged, voluntarily-paid tax, primarily on the poor, and there is little, if any, control on what happens to the untold millions, maybe billions, that is contributed, usually by those who can least afford it. Looking for "the big win", they raid their paychecks every week, and it's sad. If you doubt this, go to a state that has a lotto, and every Friday night, you will see long lines of people at the supermarket, cashing their paycheck, and they then move to the next window and buy a fistful of lotto tickets. The floor and parking lots are littered with the discarded tickets. It's sad.

Now, have I ever bought a ticket? Yes. In the twenty years or more that Texas has had a lotto, I've bought maybe fifteen tickets. I've never deliberately made a stop somewhere for that purpose, or spent a dollar I couldn't afford. When I've bought a ticket, it's been when in the company of someone else and we bought them just for fun. Seriously, I think fifteen would be a high estimate. I have a gambler's nature, so I make sure I don't get caught up in it. --Romeena

I had a big Monkey bank that I would put my $ in when he was full to the top of his head I would open it and hit the lottery every time as I counted my change then I'd go to the bank and cash it into the biggest bill I could get, I never wanted to break a large bill, so it was easier to save $ that way. That is how I was able to buy my 1st house @ 20yrs old (loan not cash) I ain't no Rockafeller ya know. Saving is a lost cause with this generation...."Ya mean when the credit card bill comes you have to PAY for the things you charged?" And when you are charged to the max you go bankrupt, and clean the slate, and let others pay for your mistakes...only in America!..
"Sometimes it just has to be said"....
Ok, tomorrow I'll talk about: birds, kittens, bunnies, puppies & butterfies, and get off this subject haha...good night ya'll...G-F....

May 16, 2012 - Msg 88601: I don't know, G-F, about the savings being a lost cause with this generation. Like everything else in life, it can't be summed up as everyone being the same. My daughter, age 28, has more in savings than me and her dad. She's always been a planner, always worked full time, even in high school. There's a lot of awesome young adults out there. And there's a lot of deadbeats in every generation.

Hey Folks

Great to see ya'll.

I haven't mentioned it yet but thanks for the prayers offered for my girls.

MDC Happy belated birthday to your dad. My fathers birthday is tomorrow, the 17th. He passed in 1978. He would have been 86. I miss that guy.

GF You're right about the Casino's. To have growth you need to bring money in from the outside. Like Henry Ford said, "We can't get rich doing each other's laundry." At least I think it was Ford.

Peace & Prayers,

Boo and Frankie--as long as you don't "clin," cuz we all know that old ladies ought not to clink! ha
Pappabear says that Danville,Ill, may be just a tad lacking in technology, as their library's two computers are PET Commodores 64s! haha Remember those.
BOO- regarding your MIL, God bless you. You have doneabout all one can ask!
GF-not sure why so much gambling these days, but you are right, it's not the answer!
RO, same here! for example, a big chunk was to go to "education" also. Now we see that it has gone to supers wages, etc, and very little has trickled down into the classrooms.
And ole RO knows when to hold em, knows when to fold em...ha
Thanks for all the well-wishes for pop!
My sibs are good. We each have our daily visits with dad and it's been working well.
And Hazel...amen! (:

Oh, and while I'm typing... I watched "The Lucky Letter" ep tonight, and tho I dont like the subject of the show, there are some good lines, plus I found a BLOOPER! When Barn opens the door after his call with ThelmaLou, the buildings outside are totally different from what's normally out there! I realize they used backdrops, as we know that the indoor scenes were shot in a studio, but some stagehand must have been having some fun!
Also, I like the part about "Edgar Coleman and ThelmaLou gluing covers back on hymn books! So who is it, me or Edgar Coleman?" lol
ANd hey to AUH20, good to see ya.

May 17, 2012 - Msg 88608: Hazel, my sis-in-law who can't save a dollar to her name and recently blew 8 thousand dollars in back disability payments and has no job, has a 28 year old son who (he and his wife) have saved 20,000 dollars in two years of marriage. They sacrifice things like cable tv and SIL just cannot understand how in the world anyone can live with only three channels. Yep...it all depends on the person but overall, I think G-F has a good point. Most young people I know have no idea how to save or stay out of debt to begin with.

Ro, that whole lottery thing with Ann Richards was so ridiculous. I have never bought a lottery ticket and don't like having to wait in line at the store for people buying them. Gets my goat. I am sorry that the fine state of Texas bought into that nonsense.

I'm going to have to watch that ep you mentioned, MDC. Thanks for the encouraging words concerning my situation with MIL. I know I have to just forgive and love her the way she is, but it is time to step back and let the others take over. I need a break before I start getting bitter about it.

Well, I woke up too early again...I don't know why that keeps happening and then I can't go back to sleep. It makes for a long day. Be back later....great to see a few more faces on the porch!

May 17, 2012 - Msg 88609: Well, I'm the first one back this morning...just sippin' my low-acid coffee and relaxing before the work begins. It is nice and actully kind of cool outside this morning. The dogs slept in the doghouse for the first time in a month.

G-F, I forced old Bernie to let me pick him up and pet him yesterday but I could tell he was not into it. He hasn't attacked anyone except Sean that one time but I am keeping a close eye on him. If he did, he could really hurt someone with those feet of his so when people are around, I have to keep him up in the coop.

Bruce is going to take off tomorrow and we have to get ready for the big yard sale. :( I am not looking forward to it. I really don't like doing this sort of thing but I want my garage back so I can park my car in it. I wanted to call the salvation army and have them come get all this stuff but Bruce didn't want to so he will spend hours and hours on it and make probably very little return.

Well, you all have listened to me ramble long enough. Time for someone else to chime in. :)

Hey Boo, you got a disco ball in your garage for sale? I just read Donna Summer passed away at age 63.

May 17, 2012 - Msg 88612: Hey, porch. Just checking in. I've had "the versitis" in my shoulder for about a week now, finally decided enough is enough, and went to the doc for a cortisone injection - just got home. Can't tell any improvement yet, but it probably won't take long. That cortisone just cools it right down.

Am heading for a SS class meeting tonight, lots of things to discuss, projects to get organized, etc. We're supposed to bring "finger foods" and since I haven't been home to prepare anything, I think I'll just pick up some chicken wings. Everyone likes them, and the job is done!

Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

Well, have a good weekend all,

BARNEY: I don't know how they do it for 80 cents.
ANDY: I don't either, I tell you.
BARN: Three Vienna sausages-heavy on the tomato puree, slice of bread, and butter
on a paper dish.
ANDY: And more than an ample portion of succotash. Don't leave out the succotash.
BARN: Yeah. You know, when you get a good meal like that with as good a service
as Olive gives you, you don't mind leaving a generous tip.
ANDY: Did you leave a tip?
BARN: Well, yeah, a quarter.
ANDY: I did, too.

May 18, 2012 - Msg 88622: Ha! Great lines MDC. I love how Barney is ready to go over and put his hat over one of them quarters and get it back, but Andy talks him out of it cause she's a widow. Then old Barney declares "let's let her keep them!" What a generous chap. :)

Rev, don't eat to much seafood. I hear it's hard on the uvula you know.

Boo, I figured you had a disco ball but not the toolbelt. What a stinker! :)

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

May 18, 2012 - Msg 88623: Yes, I'm a stinker, ASA, but so are you. ;)

Wish I could meet you and the missus for dinner, REV. We have been working to get this garage sale ready and I hate it. I would never have done this if it weren't for bruce's insistance. I wanted to donate it all and be done with it! I am still washing clothes and hanging up things.

Well SIL went back home today and mom-in-law is still as mad as a banty rooster at us for who knows what. I have to tell you this story that happened yesterday. SIL took MIL to the bank to do some business and when they stepped up to the teller, SIL started to say something and MIL began to yell at SIL and told her it was none of her business and let her take care of it! The teller's eyes were as big as saucers and SIL wanted to run and hide. After the bank, she took MIL out to lunch at my favorite local cafe. While there, the manager of the cafe went to the register, took out 20 dollars, and went across the street to get something from the grocery store. MIL immediately began talking in a very loud and demanding voice, insisting that the employee at the register do something because "That man just stole money from the cash register!" By now the whole cafe was staring and she continued her tirade and the guy behind the counter told her, "The man is the manager!". She still didn't get it and continued to loudly insist he go after the guy. SIL said she was praying for the floor to open up and swallow her. That is the kind of thing we are dealing with and it is getting much worse. She is always angry, always accusing people of something and she is getting more and more crazy. Her other kids are getting a big dose of what we have had to deal with for years. I told both bruce and his brother that they need to get her in for an evaluation for dementia and alzhiemer's ASAP and see if there is something we can do to slow down this process. They also need to visit the lawyer to name a medical power of attorney and get an advanced directive. She is going to balk at them trying to do anything of that nature because she doesn't think she is "that bad", but it has to be done. She has not been able to keep up with her finances and is often overdrawn at the bank, so her son Richard will have to take that over and boy, is she going to give him a hard time. Yesterday she told SIL that she has 2 bonds that are worth 10,000 dollars a piece and that bruce has them. They do not exist. Now she is going to ask for the bonds that don't exist and when we tell her she is going to accuse us of stealing them and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the police show up on our doorstep. It is so crazy I get a stomach ache just thinking about it. I am staying out of dealing with any of it. Her son richard is pretty much taking over but she is here and is crazy and should be in some kind of facility. What a mess.

Well, break is over.

Boo

May 18, 2012 - Msg 88624: Good afternoon, porch. My gosh, Boo! What a mess indeed. You have it sized up exactly right, as much as I can tell from a distance. MIL is over the edge, and badly in need of professional management, at least. I'm not sure there is much real help for a situation like this, dementia is what it is, and there's not a whole lot you can do about it. Problems arise when there are people who must be involved, like the bank, and they have no experience with the problem. Her doctor is your best resource. His or her word will carry a lot of weight. You're dead right that you need to get the paperwork done now. You're also right, she'll probably object, but it's got to be done. If all else fails, get the person who is in her favor at some given moment to talk to her and tell her "Mom, I think you ought to sign these papers so we can protect your interests from anyone who might want to interfere", or some such. Then get the POAs signed. You need a legal POA as well as medical. I was my dad's POA on all things, and believe me, it sure made things easier at the end.

You have my prayers. You are walking a rough and rocky road right now, and it's only going to get worse for a while. It's imperative that you keep ALL of her children closely involved, so they can see, on a day-to-day basis, just how confused and unreasonable she is. As for the two big bonds, if anyone is taking her seriously, just suggest they hire an auditor to go over her records and let them find where the bonds were purchased. If they're not there, then they're not there. No proof should end it, but I doubt it will go that far. After they see her ramble and fabricate and blame them for a couple of things, they'll realize that the bonds don't exist. One thing - is there any possibility that she could have had such bonds in the past, and lost them, and now thinks Bruce has them?

Yes, MDC, I saw the Commodore 64 comment, but it fell off my radar before I got an answer written. That IS an old one. My first computer was an Epson Equity, dual floppy drives, 256K. I loved it! Ran off a DOS driver, which had to be loaded each time you started the thing up, and I had a whole library of DOS commands in my head. I could fly on that thing! I built a spreadsheet and kept my husband's records for his whole newspaper delivery district - eighteen carrier routes, thousands of accounts - on it. With about a half hour of data entry daily, and an hour's work at month-end, I could produce the bills for all the carriers, and the summary report for the company, and print it all out on an old daisy-wheel printer, using tractor-wheel paper. Wow. Those were the good old days.

Well, gotta run. I have to work tonight, haven't had a nap, and have two baseball games and a bridal shower to attend tomorrow. I'm going to be one tired old gal by tomorrow night. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

May 18, 2012 - Msg 88626: Thanks for that confirmation, Ro. Bruce took her to the lawyer awhile back and got a legal POA, but he just didn't know about the medical POA and we didn't talk about it before hand. As far as the bonds, I guess it is possible. None of us has been involved with her finances at all since her first husband died 15 years ago. I know Bruce doesn't have them, though. I have been trying to keep her other kids aware of what has been going on with her by frequent emails and such but I will be doing that more frequently now. The lease is up on her senior apartment now and that needs to be seen about, too. Its obvious she can't keep living alone so not sure what her kids are going to do.

I will be bringing my mom back to my house again next week for a few days, I hope. It is hard to get her to venture out of her comfort zone but my sister needs a break. I do want to say that her son that split with his wife is doing much better and getting counseling. Not sure what will happen in the long run but he is doing what he needs to do for himself and his little Emily.

Still working on clothes for the garage sale and it is after 9pm! I finally ate dinner and now have to get back at it.

Boo (and I mean Boo) :(
