March 21, 2012 - Msg 87840:
Good afternoon, porch! What a beautiful day. Mid-60s, clear and sunny, light breeze, everything is green after the rain for the last two days, and flowers are budding everywhere. I have several patches of iris in bloom and they are just so pretty. The rose bushes that Joe pruned back to little stubs are now over a foot high, just lovely little mounds of red new leaves. One, for some reason, has shot one cane up about three feet high, completely out of sync with the rest of the bush. I think I need to cut that back, or it will be a maverick, in the way all summer. I just love this time of year, and specifically, this time of day, with the sunlight all golden, and slanting across the landscape, making such beautiful shadow patterns everywhere.
Well, I finally saw the new back doctor today, and I am very impressed. He is very knowledgeable, and has a wonderfully friendly and kind manner about him. He wants a CT myelogram done, which I agree will be very informative, and then we'll proceed. He asked me questions about my daily life, how I spend my leisure time and such. Based on my answers, he said he thinks we need to shoot for eliminating the source of the pain, rather than just controlling it, because "you don't just sit around all day, and that's good, and we want to preserve your ability to do the active things you like to do." I like that.
Boo, I am so sorry that Bruce is having to deal with all that nonsense at work. There seems to be an epidemic of upper management callousness these days. If he can just hang on through it, maybe change will come, and there will be a return to sanity around there.
Well, guess I'll go scare up something to eat. I have a few left-over baked chicken tenders, maybe I'll chop them up and make a chicken salad. Or not. I'll do something with them, not sure what. They're a bit dry (naturally) so maybe I'll just simmer them in a little cream of mushroom soup, and put them over rice. Or not, again. I'll think of something. I wish I had some asparagus, but I'm not about to go out to the store just for that.
Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Glad you like the new back doc and sure hope he is able to get the answers you need and find the cure for you, Ro.
Thank you for those prayers, REV. I appreciated them very much.

Good very late evening, folks. I'm staying up late, will sleep late, because I have to work tomorrow night. Actually, it's tonight, as it's now after midnight. I guess my work schedule is the reason why the switch to daylight savings time doesn't bother me at all. I hear some of you expressing how difficult it is to make the change, and I really don't understand, because I don't even notice it. I think it's because I live in an upside down world anyway, so it really doesn't matter what time the sun comes up.
By the way, who was it who gave me the advice about trying my vacuum sweeper again after it just quit that day? MDC, was that you? Whoever it was, I want you to know that was very good advice. I should have mentioned this earlier, but you were spot on. I tried it again after it had cooled down, and it runs fine. I guess it just got overheated and shut itself off, just like you said. I didn't know vacuum sweepers would do that. I cleaned Toye Starr's long hair out of the brushes, thinking that might have been causing some drag and made it heat up, and so far, it runs fine. I'm sure glad I didn't haul it to a repair place.
Spot, I'm sorry that this week is going so hard on Miss Sherry. Chemo can be so miserable - I think there's just no "sicker" sick than that. Prayers continue, and please help her try to remember that "this too shall pass."
Well, guess I'll head for the ironing board. Toye Starr is already in there, curled up beside the bed, waiting for me to come toss her up on it. Poor little thing, she can't make it by herself, she's just too short.
Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Good morning, fellow Porchsters! Good to see you all again! I have been busy sending for more music all the way from New York and just making a big mulage out of things! LOL!
Boo - Reading about Bruce going through everything he is going through just steams me! I know we all have to work for a living, but some employers really like to take advantage of the situation! It's like dangling our livelyhood over our heads! Believe me...I know. I have had some pretty rotten bosses! My very best to your household and that the dust settles! My "Achilles heel" with food is pop! Yeah....I said it...pop! I know the folks at Wally's might not like to hear that. But sometimes I go way yonder too overboard with soda! I know it's bad in large amounts. But like Otis, I dont exactly strain myself from quittin'! I also love salads! But, like your kids, I drown it in the dressing!
SPOT - Prayers and best wishes for Miss Sherry! My family has dealt with relatives that undergo chemo and it can be a very trying thing.
Ro - Boy, has my grass gotten WAY outta hand! Just as I was going to mow it, the heavens opened and we have had rain for four days! I think the yard is wetter than water itself! Everything here is just as green as it can get, but I have my work cut out for me when this all dries. Yeesh! Oh yeah, you might make sure that your vacuum switch is ok too. You have to look at that part that says "On". See right there where it says "On?"
Frankie - Dont believe we've had the pleasure.... I'm John Masters!
Well, better see what's happening in the news and get to some research. We're just two months away from the opening of the Quantrill collection in Arkansas!
Hey to REV.,MDC,Mary,Asa,GF,Maude and everyone! Have a great day and good luck to you and yours!

Y'all, I'm just so happy! Rain is coming! Hopefully it will wash away that horrible pollen (Tuesday's was the worst ever recorded). I've had a constant headache all week. I'll be happy to get some relief. All that said, I am loving the Dogwoods and Cherry Blossoms this year. So bright and full!
Spot, prayers for Miss Sherry. I hate that she's going thru this. I hate that anyone has to go through cancer treatments.
Frankie, how do you do?
Boo, I got an email of your comment on my Facebook picture. I wish I looked like a little girl! I think it's either my weight loss or the diet medicine, but all weekend I'm constantly hearing that people think I'm in college. No complaints here!
Asa, how's the grand babies?
Romeena, I hope your doctor gives you lots of relief.
MDC, did you get snow?
G-F, you're right about the vacuum analogy.

March 22, 2012 - Msg 87853:
Hahaha! So little Jake is starting to smell like a dog? Well, if it looks like a dog, and it smells like a dog, maybe it's a dog?? (heehee) Seriously, I know what you mean. Not from experience with Toye Starr, or Sugarplum, because Maltese just don't develop a "doggie" odor. Partly that's due to the fact that they mostly stay indoors, but even on the rare occasions when Starr is outdoors, she just doesn't ever smell like a dog. When I bathe her, I put a fragrant conditioner on her, and that's nice. Of course, it wears off, and then she just basically doesn't have any smell. I don't bathe her but about once a month, because her skin gets too dry, and even then I bathe her because she looks a little dingy and doesn't smell sweet, but she never smells bad. I do remember that Snuffy, my daughter's little Shih-Tzu from years ago would really get rank if she wasn't bathed frequently. The difference, I think, is that Shih-Tzus have a downy undercoat beneath their longer coat, and Maltese don't have that. They just have long hair.
Bless all of you who are suffering with the seasonal allergies. I don't know how I escaped that, but I have no allergies at all, no seasonal, drug, contact or food allergies at all. Pollen is flying around here, from the cottonwoods, the oaks and pecans, the huisache, and everything else, but it just doesn't bother me. My sons - now that's a different matter. Poor guys, every spring they have mild attacks, and in the fall, when a lot of the grasses are releasing their pollens, they have a terrible time. I think it's easier on Dale, Jr., since he moved to Florida, but poor David is just miserable from the middle of August until late October. As for me, once in a blue moon I'll have a big old sneezing spell, about thirty sneezes, my nose fills up, I blow it, and that's the end of it. (Sorry if that's too much information.) Anyway, I guess it's a good thing, because I couldn't stand taking the meds. A doctor had me take an antihistamine once when I had vertigo, thinking it might be fluid in my ears, and he was hoping to dry it up. That stuff made me so miserable, the dizziness got worse and I felt like my head was floating on the end of a string, like a balloon. No, thanks! So, my back might be a mess, but I don't have allergies! Always something for which to be thankful, I guess.
Well, gotta work tonight, so I think I'll eat a bit of lunch and catch a nap this afternoon. Sure makes the night go better if I can get at least a couple of hours of sleep before I go. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

It has been a beautiful day here in South Texas...in the 70's and sunny. St Susan and I spent some time outside playing with the baby goats...along with Emily, Sean and Erin. I am trying to soak up this nice weather before the summer comes.
Made some spaghetti with whole wheat pasta and some steamed broccoli with butter and sea salt if anyone's hungry.
Bruce came home by 6pm this evening, which is great, and spent some time outside and playing basketball with Erin. He did get to have a talk with the big boss today and it all comes down to this (and this is what I suspected); it is about budget cuts. The decision about whether Bruce goes or stays is in the hands of "higher-ups" and it is just a wait and see thing. Nobody seems to know what is going to happen (except God, of course, and ultimately that is all that matters). The boss did tell a man that works with Bruce that he should begin getting a resume together and scouting around for another job in case. Bruce will be doing the same, I guess.
I just had my shower and feel so relaxed from good hard work and spending time outdoors in the fresh air. Think I will see if Erin wants to watch a TAGS dvd before bed.

OK, come on to the porch everyone. It's Friday and I think we need to plan a night out for this weekend. I think we could all use it. What'll it be? Maybe a bonfire at Myer's Lake since the weather is nice...or we could all meet in the new conference room at Morelli's for pounded steak. Or, how about a movie in Mt. Pilot? I hear there's a Glenn Ford movie playing.
Before all this stuff came up with Bruce's job, we were planning a weekend away together but now everything is hold. I really wanted to get away before the weather became too hot here but looks like it will be awhile. Bruce will really need a few days off after he finishes this big project he is trying to do but could be three weeks or so. I am trying to make things as pleasant as possible for him when he is at home but I can just see the exhaustion in his face and it hurts to see it. It won't last forever and I look forward to seeing what the Lord has planned.
We have alot of wildflowers in south texas this year due to the rain. Do any of you have them in your area? You should see the bluebonnets on the side of the highways here!
Well St. Susan and Pat are going out of town for the night for a much needed break so I am going to have to finish the chores here and then get over there to help mom. I am trying to get her to come over here for the day but that is nearly impossible to do. Maybe. I know she would enjoy sitting out and seeing the baby goats. I hope I can talk her into it.
One more thing that I would appreciate a prayer about. I am having a health issue that I have to see the doc about soon and it is potentially serious. I pray it is nothing to be overly concerned about but it could be. I am making an appointment today. Thanks. :)
Better git.

Yep, that was me. Don't know what I did with that other "e", guess I left it lying around someplace. Frankie, I thought that might have been you, but wasn't sure. Very glad you're back on the porch, and I hope it's not just a visit. We're hoping you've moved back to town.
If I could have ordered this day, this is exactly what I would have requested. It's just beautiful! The skies are clear, the sun is like liquid gold, the grass is a fresh and beautiful green, and all the trees are now in various stages of leaf, some such a pale green they're almost yellow, and some have already darkened to a rich forest green. The rosebushes are still covered with new red leaves, but are turning green around the lower part. One already has buds on it, and it's not but about fifteen inches high! It will be nearly four feet by summer. This early budding makes me think it will really bloom its little heart out this year. There are seven distinct clumps of iris blooming in the back alone, not counting that astonishing clump of red Lady Friend iris out front. From one little rhizome, it has multiplied in three years to a clump about five feet in diameter, and at this moment is bearing at least thirty flowers. Gotta thin that rascal this fall! The rest of the iris beds have dozens and dozens of fat buds in the air above the foliage. When they all start blooming, it's going to be a showstopper back there.
I went to John's garden center yesterday, and bought eighteen flats! (No, my back and I will not be planting them, darn it, though I would love to. Joe will come next week.) Mostly petunias for the big island, but several flats of impatiens as well, to put along the back fence, in that shady area. I'll leave some gaps as we plant them, and in a couple of weeks I'll get a dozen or so hostas to put in between. Makes for such a natural-looking, woodsy effect. I'd get them now, but the plants John has are too young, too small to see what they're going to look like. Also, I have seen some slugs and pillbugs back there, so need to put some Sluggo (organic) out to get rid of them first. They love hostas! Oh, so much to do, and so much to look forward to. I just love Spring!
Well, gotta run. Eloise and I are going to Hudson's baseball games, and the first one is at 1 pm. It's such fun to watch him play. He plays right field some, but mostly he catches. Big old husky thing, built like a tank, and when he gets in that catcher's gear, he looks like a Transformer. He's a good catcher, too. Got a good eye. His brother, Landry, also plays right field and alternates as pitcher. Both boys play very well, and they seem to love it. I know we sure do enjoy the games, but then I guess grandmas always do. Blessings! --RomeEna

I'm back. Hudson's team lost the first game, but made up for it in the second game. They shut that team down, 16-0. Hudson made several good plays. I can't believe how well these little guys play - he's only 8 1/2, but his form and skills seem far beyond that. He's big for his age, at over 95 pounds, and solid as a brick, so when he hits a ball, it's going to travel. He's not fat, he's just big and solid. He's not terribly fast when he runs, as he's got a lot of beef to get in motion. However, once he gets going, he just chugs right on into home!
A good friend of mine has just published a novel, entitled "Arsenal", and available through Amazon. I have not read it yet, just learned of it today, but will be getting it. I have no doubt that it will be good. It's a fictional story, but based on concrete facts and information regarding the M world. She has done a lot of studying and research in that area, and is something of an expert. She has several papers and briefs that have been put into the national archives. I can hardly wait to read it.
I cut a beautiful bouquet of irises when I got home, and they're now gracing my desk. So pretty, and have such a sweet, subtle fragrance. Beautiful things.
Well, guess I'll mosey along. Toye Starr has been alone all day, and she's hanging around me, looking for attention. Poor little thing!
Blessings! --Romeena
March 24, 2012 - Msg 87869:
In the event that any of you would like to read "Arsenal", this information may be helpful. It is not available in Kindle books, so far it's just out in paperback. If you go to Amazon to order it, you will find that a general search for "Arsenal" will not find it. You must enter "Arsenal by Tammy Swofford", and then it will come up. It's 11.95. Knowing Tammy, even without reading the book I can tell you it will be well-written and interesting, a fictional story covering a great deal of factual information. I can guarantee it will leave you thinking. I have ordered my copy, should have it by Tuesday at the latest. I am SO anxious to read it! --Romeena

We had four straight days and nights of rain in every capacity! JUST as I was going to make time to mow, the rains came and then, I got sick! So now my yard looks like an abandoned house. It's not grossly overgrown, but it looks like we moved out a couple of weeks ago and it has grown since. I will probably have to mow it twice! Once to get it managable and twice to actually mow it where it's short! The bad news.....my FIL's yard is the same way! So I will have to mow two yards twice each.
Well, better get at it. Y'all have a great and wonderful day! Hey to MDC,SPOT,Asa,Maude,REV.,Frankie,Tom,Possum,Lucy,
Romeena,Mary and the Mrs. Calabash...wherever she is! LOL!

Frankie....you mentioned keyboard....don't they have a full keypad that you can plug your iPad into? I'm not sure but seems like I saw something like that at the AT&T store this pass weekend.
Hey Boo.....if you don't have enough chores to do today come on over and I'll share some of these with you:)
Praying that Miss Sherry is having a much better week this week.
Well I better get busy doing something around here......Don't look like Boo is coming over to help out.

Good morning, porch! Another gorgeous day here in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Just beautiful! I absolutely love this time of year. Speaking of overgrown grass, Eddie didn't come last week, and my grass has suddenly taken off and started growing like it was its last chance. It's about five inches high, and will be at least eight inches by the time he comes at the end of the week. Sure look shaggy, but will be so pretty very soon.
Well, gotta run. Joe will be here shortly to spray vinegar on some problem areas that need to be weeded. That 10% vinegar works very well, and isn't harmful to the environment. In fact, it's helpful. It's just harmful on the vegetation it touches. Once it's in the soil, it's beneficial.
I'll drop back by a little later. I sure do hope and pray that Miss Sherry is having a better day. Blessings, friends!

Oh MDC....that is really strange that you asked about Pradaxa...I woke up this morning out of a sound sleep with the word "Pradaxa" in my mind (no kidding). I'm thinking I need to see if the doc will put mom on it and take her off the coumadin. On Saturday my mom mentioned something to me about it but i was busy with something and heard her but didn't think about it again.
Thank you for those thoughts and prayers, JM. I see the doctor on Wed.
Sorry I didn't make it by to help, REV. I was in the middle of my chores when the mother-in-law dropped in for coffee and I got side tracked. If there is still more to do, I will help you. Tomorrow you can help me. I'll let you feed the goats and play with the goat babies.
This morning, from my kitchen, I watched Thelma Lou the donkey manipulate the chain on the gate until she had it open and let herself out of the back pasture to get to the greener grass. She used her nose and lips until she got the chain undone! She is a determined old thing...kind of like the mother-in-law. ;)
Better get back to the laundry.

Just droppin' in a good night and seeeee ya tomorrow!
Hey G-F, there's a couple things that bother me about baseball. I used to be a massive baseball fan, but the whole steroids Sosa / McGwire thing turned me off. And now the uniforms, especially the pants, look like pajamas! And what is this thing where baserunners have a death grip on their batting gloves while they are on base?? Well, off my major league soapbox. LOL!
Have a great night, y'all. Keep a good thought!

Oh, I thought I would throw out a little trivia of my own if you dont mind. In the episode, "Case of the Punch in the Nose", Bobby Gribble and Emma Larts (?sp) announced their nuptuals. Who did Floyd say Bobby broke up with when Andy didnt know they were dating?

JM.....I love baseball but I know what you mean with all the steroid drama. And the salaries really bug me but I still love to watch the game:) As for the "death grip" on the batting gloves while on base, they say it protects there hands if they slide head first. They claim it makes them keep the hands closed to help protect the breaking of fingers, etc..
Boo...aren't you so sweet to let me come over a goat sit...lol
You all have a good night and see ya tomorrow. Let's all go to the diner in the morning for breakfast. I'll get there early to save us a big table together.

I finally got to my lawn last night. I gave it a good shave, but it wasnt skin close. It looks decent until I can go over it again and "baseball" it. That's what I call it when I mow my grass (as how Andy told Barney to sing into the hot microphone) reeeal low! I still have to do the FIL's lawn and guess what??? We have MORE rain in today's forecast! By the time I get to his, I'm gonna need a flashlight and an African jungle tour guide just to find the mower! Yeesh!
Guess I'll scoot and get to the news and get to work on an article I am writing for an Arkansas quarterly promoting the Quantrill collection's opening. Y'all have a great and safe day and I'll try to get back a little later with some tea for the porch!

Good afternoon, porch! Beautiful day here, a bit hazy but still pretty. Irises just popping everywhere, the pretty things. Lots of rose buds with little tips of color showing like a new lipstick, where the buds are thinking about opening. Also, there are some amaryllis buds rising, from bulbs I planted after some past Christmases. I never save the bulbs and try to force them again the following year, I just stick them in the ground after they finish their Christmas show, and get new bulbs in November. Some make it, some don't, but those that do just come up and bloom again year after year. Spring is their normal bloom time, like so many flowers, but it's still fun to get the bulbs and coax them into bloom for the holidays.
What is it with baseball and sliding? It's so funny to watch the little boys slide in their games. The ball can be way out in the field, no way is it a threat, but the little runner will fall down and try to slide when he's eight feet from the base. Sometimes they have to crawl the last foot or two. I think it has something to do with the shame of going home in a clean uniform. If you aren't dirty, then you weren't involved in any spectacular plays, apparently. I have never really been a big baseball fan until the last few years. With my grandsons in kid league, and now with a nephew playing for OSU (after refusing a draft by the Rangers) I've found I really enjoy it. Oh, there are the prima donnas, but it's nowhere near as bad as it is in football. I enjoy the finesse and skill that you see in baseball, too. A well-executed double play, or (please, Lord!) a triple play, can be beautiful. And when it's accomplished by a little raggedy bunch of eight-year-olds, or more often, by the eleven-year-olds, it's really fun. Besides, I love the hotdogs!
Speaking of hotdogs, what's for supper? Anybody got any ideas? I'm hungry! --Romeena

"People will come Ray... They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll watch the game and it'll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they'll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come."

The smells, the crowd, the $1 hot dog nights.
My Son & I lived at the Canton/Akron Indians field.(Indians Double A team)back when Albert Belle,Manny Ramerez,Jim Thome were up and commers. Alot of great memories! Now it's time to train a new group (Grandkids) took my grandaughter to her first game last year Mrs.G-F said she wouldn't make it two innings...10:00 & the 8th inning came she DID NOT want to leave! Had to phone Grandma G-F and ask for additional time. At the end of the game she said:
"Papa that was AWSOME"! How can you top that!
Then she got home and bragged she ate 5 hot dogs!
Who's the Papa????.......G-F

"Tube Steak," Auh2o?...ewww...gross. "Weinie" sounds bad enough already. Great to see ya on the porch, by the way and loved the movie quote.
Well, we had healthy chicken and veggie stir-fry and I made some guacamole (sp?). I am trying to get at least one or two avocados in each week, as Ro suggested. It was awesome. I mashed up the avocado with some lime juice, then I made a kind of mexican pesto using fresh garlic, some raw spinach leaves, cherry tomatoes, salt, and cilantro (my absolute favorite herb!). I mixed that into the avacado and...MAN, was it good! I had to make myself stop eating the stuff.
Bruce helped me clean the kitchen, bless him. The job situation is still an unknown but the Lord has given him grace and he is handling things so very much better. Thank you for your prayers on our behalf.

Oh yes, baseball. I do enjoy the major league games a lot, especially Ranger games in the new stadium, but I think the minors would be a lot of fun too. Haven't seen one, but we did see the OSU/TCU game a few weeks ago, when my nephew was playing. It was such fun. I probably told you all about this, just skip over if I did, but we sat in bleachers off to the side - covered stadium seats were all sold out. No matter, we had more fun where we were. Behind us, there was a long, grassy hill, and the kids were "surfing" down that hill on flattened cardboard. Little Trip, age 4, had to try, of course. At first he clutched the edges of his cardboard and sat stiff as a poker as he slid down. Gradually he got braver, and slid kneeling on the cardboard. Then I happened to look over at the hill, and there he went, standing on the cardboard, knees bent, hands extended forward and backward like a surfer, and just zipped on down that hill! It was hilarious, and he was so proud. We didn't get hotdogs - too expensive and didn't look too good, but we had scrumptious kettle popcorn and cokes (I just took extra insulin) and a wonderful time was had by all. Any of you who follow college baseball, watch for my nephew. He plays for Oklahoma State, and his name is Zach Fish.
Boo, in my opinion, guacamole is food for the angels. I love the stuff, especially when you can get really good, creamy avocados. I make mine pretty much the way you did - just mash up the avocados, add lime juice (I like a lot) or lemon, but lime is better. Add salt to taste, preferably sea salt. Some minced onion, and a little garlic and cilantro, and a dash (or two or six) of Tabasco, and you've got it. I can and sometimes do eat it as is, no chips or anything. You can put a splash of olive oil in it too, to boost the heart-healthy factor a bit more. Good stuff, and how lovely that it's good for you as well.
Well, Joe and Jorge are coming tomorrow to plant all those flats of flowers, so guess I'd better get to bed. If I don't, I'll still be hunting my socks when they get here. Not that it matters, they'll just go on in the yard and get busy, they surely don't need me. I'm basically useless right now, and it's making me crazy. I need to get in the dirt!
Everyone have a good night, and don't forget to say your prayers, especially for all our porchsters who need help right now. --Romeena
