November 14, 2011 - Msg 86211: Mornin' Honeys. Warm and humid here in south texas..yuck. Supposed to be warm all week, which is good news for my tomato plants anyway.

Busy day...have to take my daughter shopping. She has not ONE pair of jeans or pants that fit her. She has had a growth spurt like none other. Unfortuntely both my kids are shorter than average and everything I buy them has to be hemmed. I am one of those women that really hates shopping so this will be a challenge. Erin is not the type to make up her mind easily. Help.

Better get going. I'm still sitting here in my night clothes finishing my coffee. This is going to be a very busy week and a half before thanksgiving. I am trying to keep a list to stay organized. The fundraiser dinner for our friend Jace with leukemia is this week. Please pray that it is a success and helps his family with the financial burden they are under.

G-F, Did you get all your leaves raked up? I'll hit mine again tomorrow with the rider. That will just about take care of the backyard. But I have 4 Quacking Aspen out front that are real late droppers. They have just started to drop leaves. I hate that about them suckers. Oh well. Such is life. They are coming down next summer anyway. Not because of that, but because they are starting to lift my sidewalk a bit. The roots don't go very deep and they send up sucker shoots everywhere. So they're outta here! Makes my wife mad, but I'll replace them with something more suitable for the enviorment in which they live.

Boy, you look at tv from the 60's and compare it to today. No toilets shown. Any bedroom shots had double beds (The Ricardos, The Petries and so on).
Ed Sullivan allowed Elvis Presley on his variety show but only allowing the camera to shoot from the waist up so that none of the gyrating Elvis was noted for would be shown. Heck, today even the stinking commercials are 10 times more provocative. Smiling Bob and his cure for all that ails him, to women prancing around in tiny bikini's proudly proclaiming they lost 80 pounds with this, that or the other. Such goings on.

Well I better get rolling. Boo, I hope your week isn't to stressful. Take some time to unwind and come sit in your rocker and listen to the cricketts chirp, and the hoot owls hoot, and the birds sing.

Asa.....you are so right about today's commercials. What really blows my mind is you normally can't tell what is being advertised until the end of the commercial. You see some girl prancing around with hardly anything on and then you find out that they are promoting computers, hamburgers or something else. What the heck does that half dressed girl have to do with those things? IT ALL POINTS TO A MORALE BROKEN NATION....plain and simple.

Well I better get off here. Gotta go get my teeth cleaned this morning.....such fun:) Really it's not bad at all....just takes up my time going there.

Well, thanks for the advice, Asa...I am trying to catch up from being in town yesterday. I had a very nice time with Erin, though. She is finally old enough to like trying on clothes. She has always been such a tomboy but something so sweet happened yesterday that I just have to share it. When we were heading for the dressing room at Sear's, we passed a rack of Christmas dresses for girls. I kind of sighed to myself because I figured Erin would never go for it but to my surprise, she stopped in front of one very frilly dress, smiled and said, "I love this dress". I asked if she would like to try it on and she was absolutley giddy about it. You should have seen her in that dress! She had the biggest smile on her face (and I did too). It was more than I wanted to spend but the expression on her face and her excitement were priceless. When her Daddy came home last night, she couldn't wait to model it for him with her new shoes. He made a big deal over it and swept her into his arms, telling her he loved her. Made my day. By the way, it seems like some of you assured me that she would one day want to dress like a girl again. :) Now, if only she weren't already so boy-crazy! :)

I agree about the commercials. I just hate that I can be sitting watching something like TAGS with the kids but have to mute the commercials. It happened twice last night on TVLand. Forgot what we were watching but commercials for that ridiculous "Hot in Cincinatti" were coming on and they were really disgusting. Also, I think I have stated my opinion of "Smiling Bob" before. Those commercials make me so angry and I find them very offensive. I'm no prude but that is just plain, inappropriate. There, I said it and I'm NOT taking it back.

Time to get back to work. "The man" is coming to day to fix the icemaker on my refrigerator so have to finish putting away the dishes.

I have always been taught to hold the door open for ladies (all others too)which I have always done.What erks me are the ones that can't even ecknowledge the courtsey,not that I do it for that reason but it's part of being friendly.
I find it odd when it's a couple the man usually say's the thank you. Some ladies (I use the term lightly) when I speak of the ones that respond:
"I don' need no man to hold the door open, I can do it myself!" Rev, your post about “some girl prancing around with hardly anything on…” describing the commercials on TV reminded me of the TAGS episode, I think it was “The Lucky Letter” when Barney was rummaging thru the dump trying to find the letter and Andy was with him and he finds a magazine. Andy holds it up and says “why, that young lady ought to be ashamed of herself!” And then he says, “who would take that kind of a magazine anyway?” and looks at the back of it and says “Barney!” I think Barney says something like “I just take it for the articles…” That scene makes me laugh every time, which is kind of funny, really, because overall “The Lucky Letter” is one of my least favorite B&W episodes. But I do think that scene is funny.

I really notice the lack of manners when I go to the grocery store. Sometimes people are so rude! I always try to be nice and friendly, but other people don’t seem to have the same goal.

I am doing a little better. I am not using my walker anymore, and finally have my pain somewhat under control. The doctor has me on a pain patch now, and even though I still hurt, it seems to take the edge off a little. Boy I had fun entertaining Mr. Hazel with my walker. I did a quite good imitation (if I do say so myself) of what I called “Old Man Going to a Fire”. Remember the old Carol Burnett show, and Tim Conway would play a firefighter, and he was like 100 years old, and he would shuttle with his feet as he would “hurry” to put out the fire. That’s what I would do with my walker, move down the hall in short little old-man steps. Got my husband to giggling every time. For those of you that asked what I did, I think I failed to answer. It’s just been so depressing I really haven’t wanted to talk about it. Basically, I slipped in the garden and broke my pelvis in 2 places. Folks, I’m here to tell you, that hurts! I won’t go into the details, but it’s been a long and depressing road so far, since the last week in August. And I still have a ways to go yet, but I think I see the light at the end of the tunnel for now.

Hazel, you poor dear. That sounds just terrible what you've been dealing with. I hope you are on the mend and your druggist is getting you good pills. Much of my low back problem they tell me is attributed to what they call a rotated pelvis. They say it's actually my pelvis getting dislocated. Fortunatly my Doctor can twist me back into to proper form fairly easily. But I'm still sore for a week or two afterwards. I hope your getting along better now.

Sure hope Ro is having a good time on her cruise. She should be home soon I think.

Well better get. Going to the big city today for a meeting. I like to pull the car over every 20 minutes or so and give her a rest. So I better get started now. :)

I'm sitting here in my living room looking at the lights on the Christmas tree. YEP....when I came home from my tour, our tree was up. My wife can't wait to put it up each year. This year she has 3000 lights on it. (2800 lights last year) It takes her so long to put it up that she likes to put it up early she she can enjoy it for a while. PLUS I like for her to put it up while I'm on the road....makes it easy on me...lol

November 17, 2011 - Msg 86256: Maude, that sounds like the kind of weather I like. Can you believe it was a record-breaking 92 degrees here in south texas yesterday?! It will be cooler today but not cool enough for me.

REV, I took days on my christmas tree last day and put thousands of lights on it. It was beautiful, but NO WAY am I doing that again this year! Last year I did everything in white lights but this year I want a tree like we had when i was a kid, with colored lights. I am trying hard to make this a much more stress-free holiday season but I am starting to feel the pressure. I have been trying to get as many things out of the way as possible this week so I won't have as much to do next week. I took the dog and cat to the vet for their shots yesterday...what a sight they were. They hate to ride in the car and both were hyperventilating...the cat was growling, the dog was howling and it was one long trip to the vet's office. Today, I take Sean to get his lab and glucose tolerance test, and tomorrow I have to take mom and dad to the dr's office. Dad had some labs done and the doc wants us to come in to discuss it, so something must be wrong. He just looks and feels so bad now, I am really concerned for him.

We have the fundraiser tonight for Sean's friend Jace, with leukemia. Hope they do well and raise the needed funds.

November 17, 2011 - Msg 86262: Hey, porch!!! I'm home, had a wonderful time, but there's no place like home. Also, no keyboard like my own. Those little dinky keyboards that the hotels all seem to favor just make me crazy. Also, on the ship, you have to pay for the internet time, and I'm too cheap to do that, so I saved it all up until I got home.

As I said, we had a wonderful time. The tribute artists were all just terrific, including our own dear Floyd. He's just hilarious. He sounds just like the original Floyd, and even manages to look like him, with his little mustache, and his slightly graying hair. There's a Howard Sprague - another great look-alike, and Otis, and Briscoe Darling, and Barney and Thelma Lou, and little Leon. We now also have Andylina, who is a dead-out ringer for the original Charlene, and can sing and dance, too. It seems Maggie Peterson wasn't terribly thrilled about an impersonator though, so the young lady assumed the identity of Andylina and the story is that she's "just like her mama." Ernest T. Bass was there also, and he is hilarious, both in character and out. He and a buddy who came with him were at our table in the dining room, and he's a sight. Kept the table busy!

The food was great, I have eaten waaaay yonder too much, and now have some serious weight-losing to do. We made a stop in Cozumel, and another in Costa Maya, on the Yucatan peninsula. I didn't buy much, except for a beautiful mother-of-pearl pendant and earrings, in silver settings, while in Costa Maya. It's really pretty stuff, and I think I'll enjoy it. I managed to refrain from buying a bunch of useless touristy stuff - just some t-shirts for the grandkids. Last year I lugged home an enormous conch shell - it's pretty, and it fits in with a small shell collection I have displayed in the front hall bathroom, but it was a job to get that thing home without it getting smashed. So, I made Eloise promise to stop me if I started looking at shells again.

Jerry picked us up at the airport, and my David was with him. He had come over here earlier to put up my Christmas lights, only to find roofers swarming all over the place. My new roof is going on today. And probably tomorrow. So, he couldn't put up the lights, but he did get my tree out and all set up in the living room. An armchair has to move in here in the office for the holidays, and I can't carry it, or the tree, so he always does that for me. He'll come back, probably on Monday, to get the lights up. Meantime, I don't have to be back at work until Wednesday night, so am hoping to have all decorating done by then, and Thanksgiving shopping done as well. I'll be cooking on Saturday - any of you that can, come on by, I'll be making lots! Gosh, I wish you really could. One of these days....

Boo, I was also one who told you not to give up on Erin finding her feminine side. Actually, you may find yourself wishing for your little tomboy again, before it all settles down. Wait until her hormones start to flow! Saints preserve us!

Spot, as you can see, everyone is praying for Miss Sherry's test results to be just wonderful. Thank you for keeping us posted.

Asa, I can't help but comment on the hilarious typo, referring to the quaking aspen you're going to remove. I think I'd remove a "quacking" aspen, too! If a tree quacked at me, I'd probably run, but I'd be back with an axe!

Asa, the fundraising event tonight went very well. I don't know the total raised but it was at the country club and I saw lots of influential-looking people flashing cash, so I think it was a success. I know one restaurant owner paid almost 2,000 dollars for a purse for his wife during the auction. It was some designer purse but looked like it could of come from walmart to me. There was a some famous comedian there that gave a show but I had never heard of him (I never watch Comedy Central). Supposedly he did a show on Showtime. His last name is Trevino, but don't remember his first name. He was funny, alright, but he used more than his fair share of profanity, unfortunately. Jace was in the hospital and unable to attend himself, but they had made a video presentation of him thanking everyone for their participation. He was so sweet. Poor guy was totally bald from all the chemo but seemed to be in good spirits. Thanks for the prayers on his behalf. :)

I am praying for so many people with cancer right now. I have several friends and family member who are currently going through treatment. Very discouraging.

I'm beat to the socks and should have been in bed by now. Better hit the ironing board.

November 18, 2011 - Msg 86269: Me too, Boo. I don't know what I'm doing still up and in motion. This was a long day. I must say, though, that the cruise lines and the port staff do an excellent job of moving a couple of thousand people off that ship in record time and with remarkably little hassle.

Has anyone seen a comedian named Darrel Joyce? I understand he's been on Comedy Central, and I have no idea what he's like there, but the act he presented on the ship was absolutely hilarious. Not a bad word in it, my mother would have loved him, and I haven't laughed that hard in quite a while. His material reminded me a little of Sinbad, who I think is very funny. Just a running commentary on the behavior of some children today, and how his mother would have handled it, and a positively hilarious critique of the way some people dress on the ship, people who shouldn't. It was all clean, not even a double entendre anywhere, and it was so funny. I'll admit, not all shipboard shows are completely clean - I've walked out on a couple - but this guy was squeaky clean, and definitely proved you don't have to be dirty to be funny. He was outside the theatre afterward, meeting people, and I just stood aside and listened for a couple of minutes. Almost everyone who stopped to speak to him thanked him for keeping it clean. I'm so glad they did.

Say, G-F, would you answer a question for me? By any chance, would your real first initial happen to be a "T"? Just wondering....

Boo, that's great news about the fundraiser of Jace. Sounds like it went really well. Bless his little heart, and bless his family as well.

OK, I'm off to the ironing board. No, scratch that. No ironing board for me tonight, not after that shipboard bed. I know the cruise lines do the best they can, considering the number and assortment of body "styles" that inhabit those beds - but my Tempur-pedic it wasn't, and my back knew it. We had the world's best cabin steward, who did every little thing he could to make sure we were comfortable, but he's not responsible for the mattresses on those beds. I am seriously looking forward to melting into my own bed tonight, especially with my small canine companion beside me. Sure did miss that puppy. (b>PH, to answer your question, when I opened the bedroom door to let her out, the little snot snatched up a toy, tossed her little head and trotted right past me, as if to say, "Oh, it's you. 'Bout time you showed up!" That's typical of her, she always snubs me for a few minutes when I've left her alone, but she can't maintain it. Pretty quick, she comes around for some cuddles. Of course, the roofers hammering overhead hadn't done much to improve her mood, either. They should finish up before noon tomorrow (I hope!) Roof looks good, though. I think I like my shingle choice. I'd better, it's not going to be changed now!

November 18, 2011 - Msg 86274: That's so cute about Toye, Ro. My cat was mad at me because of the trip to the vet day before yesterday and he stayed away from home for a good 24 hours. He finally showed up last night wanting in to eat and he's been fine since.

Well, I woke up too early but slept well so I am ready to start the day. Last night while I was at the fundraiser, Bruce got Erin to clean her room and she even did most of her school assignments for today, so she can help me with the chores.

Better finish the coffee and get moving. :)

November 18, 2011 - Msg 86280: Good morning, porch! Hey, G-F, you're right, that's where my thoughts were turned. You seemed to know a lot of things and people that he would know, so I was wondering. Now that you've given me a little more info, it makes sense. Wonder if I can pull up the "Mt. Airy News" online?

I'd like to ask for prayers, please, for my friend Ray. I've known him and his lovely wife for many years - they're church friends. He went on the Mongolia trips - if you remember, one of our group fell off a camel and broke both wrists and had a concussion that left him a bit loopy for several days. Anyway, that was Ray. A trooper all the way, he hung in there and finished the trip, with only first-aid-type treatment for his wrists, and nothing but careful observation for the concussion. Where we were, there were no medical facilities. That's one reason our little clinic group was there. Anyway, Ray was found to have kidney cancer a couple of years ago, and has been in treatment ever since. He has fought a valiant fight, but the doctors told him that the "last hope" medication they were using wasn't really working, his tumors are still growing. They gave him the option of continuing treatment, or just going on hospice and remaining as comfortable as he can. He has chosen to continue to fight. Please, please pray for him and his wife. They are prayer warriors, gospel-sharers and all around wonderful people. Please pray for healing, and if that's not in God's plan, then for ease and comfort and a peaceful home-going. Ray is well loved, and we don't want to lose him, but God knows what is best.

Now - I need to get busy around here! Much to do, much to do! Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

OK, I just can't wait any longer to get some stories going, and thanks to PH, I have this one;
but man, I can't believe I said it in 2004!!!
And to see names like Charlotte Tucker, Rev Jr, and others was sometime else!
OK, here's an oldie but a goodie:
When I was about 11 years old, my mom and dad set us all down (2 older than me, and 3 younger than me) on Christmas eve, and after some carols, The Night Before Christmas, and a prayer that my dad liked to recite with the family each year, they announced to us that they didnt think that Santa
would be able to leave anything on our wish lists,
but would only be able to leave a few small items.
(I grew up in a lower middle class area)
My dad had a good job, and we were always well clothed and fed, but in a time before credit cards etc, many extras went by the wayside.
We were all fine with that, but the younguns below me who still believed in Santa were a bit diappointed, but still accepted it well.
So we went back to our activities and all seemed well, until about 9 pm when the doorbell rang, and my dad said a big "oh my" when he answered the door, and then stepped outside for a moment!
The next thing we see was he and SANTA coming in the door! He told us that Santa had to use the phone for a minute. We had one of those wallphones in the kitchen. (Like in the color tags eps). After a few moments, he emerged from the kitchen with a big HO HO HO and then told us he'd be right back with GIFTS! He returned with toys for everyone! It was a Christmas Eve that I will never forget!
And, now here's the "rest of the story:"
My dad told us a few years later that the Santa had been hired by a rich family in Scottsdale, way out in the boonies in those days, but he took a few wrong turns and ended up in our area lost as he could be. He called the Scottsdale family, and with no freeways back in those days, he knew it would take another couple hours to get there, so the dad on the other end said that was ok, because they had a "plan B", (which will never be known)
and he told the Santa to go ahead and stay at the "house with 6 kids," and give them the presents! (Pman- that was the year I got my rifleman cap gun!) In fact, almost all of the gifts were exactly what we had been hoping for!
It was like old Ben Weaver opening up his suitcase on Christmas eve in the courthouse!
That is the God's truth, and even tho Johnny Paul Jason may say it aint, it really is! And it still give me goosebumps! Aint God grand!
Well porchsters, let us count our blessings,
but also remember that it is by our fruit that others will know us!

Hi Tom, I hear what you're saying, but thank God my dad always had a good job, and mom was always home with us kids, and would sometimes babysit other kids. I started working as a paperboy at age 11, but unforunately those kinds of opportunities for kids are gone now. It really helped me to understand the meaning of working for a dollar and not to expect "entitlements."
I didn't rack up $60,000 in student loans because i went to a community college, and then to a non-"prestigious" university. Then I worked in a Pizza hut for those two years until I got my first teaching position. There are many ways to go thru life, and the decisions we make, often thanks to the influence of our parents, make all the difference. (:

November 18, 2011 - Msg 86286: Hey, porch -- an urgent prayer request. I just had a phone call from REV, and he and his wife are in the car, driving little Jake to the vet. You remember Jake - he's REV's faithful little Shih-tzu friend, cute as he can be and much beloved. Little Jake was attacked by a Great Dane just a little while ago, and appears to be pretty seriously injured. Jake is a tiny boy, and Danes have big teeth, so the puncture wounds he received could easily be life-threatening. REV is very upset, as you would imagine, and immediately thought of us as folks who could help him pray for the little fellow's safe recovery. Most of us are animal lovers, and even those who are not will want to join in this prayer effort, because we all love our REV, and know how broken-hearted he must be. He's driving, and his wife is holding little Jake very close, which will certainly help to calm and reassure the little guy, and help keep him from going into shock. So, please pray for little Jake - one of God's small creatures, and much loved by his family. Thanks, everyone. --Romeena

November 18, 2011 - Msg 86290: Well, howdy, Mary Wiggins! Thanks so much for joining in the prayers, and thanks to all who are praying. God is working - I just talked with REV again, and the vet says that she is almost certain that there is no major organ damage. The blood tests she has done apparently are showing no enzymes that would indicate heart or liver damage, and his lungs appears to be okay as well. She does plan to operate to open up and clean out the deepest punctures and then close them from the inside out. I know what she's talking about, and that is proper procedure. It eliminates the danger of leaving foreign material or contaminants inside, and avoids leaving a hollow wound that can accumulate fluids. She said if all goes well, Jake can probably go home tomorrow. REV is feeling better about it now, still concerned and a little shocky, but feeling more confidant that his little friend will recover. He asked me to thank each of you for your loving concern and your prayers. Friends - what would we do without them?

November 19, 2011 - Msg 86292: Yes, Mary Wiggins, God is absolutely concerned for our pets and for all of His creation...even the little sparrow that falls. I was reminded of that when I was watching a program today on animal planet about giraffes, and guess what?...Giraffes are NOT selfish. They are kind of shy and they do love each other. God made them so unique in the way they can survive by reaching the highest leaves on the tall trees and their tongues can stretch up to 18 inches to get those leaves. They are good mothers to their offspring, too. I have a new fondness for giraffes after watching the documentary. God did some amazing things and creation does indeed show forth His glory. :)
