Hazel, thanks for the reminder about Millie. I remembered the previous anniversaries by visiting her restaurant's web site and her photo in Romeena's online album. But this year, I had forgotten.

Asa, the Apollo 13 parts played by members of the Howard family include:
Ron Howard = Director of film
Ron's mother Jean Speegle Howard = Blanche Lovell, the astronaut's wheelchair bound mother who lived in the nursing home.
Ron's father Rance Howard = The priest sitting on the couch in the Lovell's home during the tragedy.
Ron's brother Clint Howard = One of the white shirted engineers operating a data console in the NASA command center.
Ron's wife Cheryl Howard = an onlooker at the launch site.
Ron's daughter Bryce Dallas Howard = a young teenaged girl wearing a yellow dress.
My favorite line in the movie occured when astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were trying to comfort Jim Lovell's mother during the tragedy. As she watched the events unfold on television, she asked Neil and Buzz if they were involved in the space program. This was just 9 short months after Neil and Buzz became world famous for being the first men on the moon with Apollo 11.

September 17, 2011 - Msg 85596: By golly G-F, you must have used a pressure washer on the porch. It's sparkling clean! I was even going to take my shoes off before I came on board, but realized my socks were dirtier than my shoes. :)

Hope everyone is having a good weekend. Saw that terrible crash at the air races in Reno. I've been to that event before. Very tragic. Prayers for all who lost their life, and those who were injured.
And not trying to sound cold, but so sad to see it was a P-51 Mustang that crashed. As a W.W.2. buff, there just aren't many of those 51's left that are air worthy.

Well it's been cool and cloudy after morning rains. Very nice temps. I spent part of the day cleaning corn stalks out of my garden. I usually find enough friends and neighbors who want them for decorating that I don't have to deal with disposing them or composting them. They don't break down as fast as I like for composting.

Well think I'll hit the shower, see what I can rustle up for dinner, and turn on the football game. Yep, thats the plan. Take a shower, fix some dinner, watch some football. Yessiree, I think that's what I'll do. Shower, Dinner, Football. :)

Asa

September 17, 2011 - Msg 85597: Oh, and thanks for the info PH. It sounds like Ron's wife and daughters roles were minor non-speaking parts. But I'll keep an eye out for them next time I watch it. I knew his Mom, Dad, and Brother were in it.
Well now for that Shower, dinner, and football. That's the plan.....

Asa

September 17, 2011 - Msg 85598: Speaking of pressure washing the porch....that's what I had to do this evening. Our donkey, Thelma Lou somehow got into some ant poison that was in the garage and ate some...not enough to do her any real harm, but enough for her to leave a nasty donkey bomb on my front porch! I had to use the power washer on it and it still left a terrible brown stain, darn it. Bruce keeps letting her out of the pen to wander around and graze but she managed to get into the poison.

Well, it keeps looking like rain here...thunder and lightening but no rain. We managed to get the corn, green beans and some of the tomato plants in the ground. Hope and pray everything makes it. Bruce really worked hard out there today and it was in the 90's and very humid...really miserable weather.

We finally got our laundry room put back together after the water leak the roofers made. There is still just a little tile work to do but it is mostly finished so I spent alot of time in there today cleaning and organizing. I got all my jelly and jam on the shelves and my canning jars put up and have been doing a little fall decorating. I put some little pumpkins and fall leaves on the mantle and the kitchen looks very festive. I am trying to keep the faith and believe that fall WILL...eventually be here.

Hello porch family

Asa...yes that was terrible in Reno. So sad.

Boo....So Thelma Lou left her mark on your porch...hehe....don't mean to laugh but it is kinda funny:) Just glad she didn't get too much of the poison and that she's ok.

Got a busy day tomorrow so probably won't get to check back in until Monday. After my concert tomorrow night I'm leaving out and driving through the night to get home. I'm ready to see my family:)
You all have a good night!

September 18, 2011 - Msg 85600: Good evening, porch! Guess what? We had some rain last night! Real rain! The wet kind! There wasn't a lot, maybe an inch, but it was rain! I was just so excited. Maybe it's the beginning of the end for this horrible drought. Boo, I hope it gets down your way too.

Poor Thelma Lou! Ant poison? That could have been really serious. Have you tried dried molasses to get rid of the ants? It really works. I haven't seen a fire ant mound in about four or five years around here, since we started putting out dried molasses. Non-toxic, won't hurt anybody or anything, promotes beneficial microbial activity in the soil, is a great green-up fertilizer, and ants hate it. It's the cats!

Our little Logan would have been nine today, if he had lived. I can't believe it's been that long since that angel passed through here on his brief little visit, but it has. Eloise and I will be going out to the cemetery Monday. He's buried in a lovely little rural cemetery, and we go out there every year, just for a brief visit. Then we'll meet David and Brittney at Babe's for some fried chicken, to end the day on a happy note. It's not so much a sad time anymore, it's just sort of bittersweet, because we know where he is, and we know we'll see him again.

I emailed my son about the pilot who was killed in Reno, thinking he might know him. He lived in Ocala, which isn't far from where my son lives. He didn't know him personally, but has landed his own plane at the man's airstrip in the past. Just about everyone who flies light planes has some contact, direct or indirect, with others who fly. It's a whole different sub-culture - very interesting - almost like an extended family.

Well, I think I'm going to put my weary bones to bed. Gotta be up early for preaching in the morning. I got some new dangly earrings to wear. I hope they're not too worldly. --Romeena

September 18, 2011 - Msg 85602: Mornin' porch. Ro, it did rain here for just a little while last evening and looking outside, I think we may have gotten some last night. The ant poison that Thelma Lou got into was some that Bruce mixed up last summer and we haven't used it since. I did try to find some dried molasses for the garden but am having some trouble finding it around here. Where do you get your's?

Woke up too early for some reason and have nursery duty this morning at church so it promises to be a long day. Mom-in-law wants to come for lunch, too, so no nap after lunch.

I'm looking at the sky and it looks pretty cloudless today, unfortunately, and that donkey stain looks worse than ever in the morning sun!

Better get ready for preachin'.

Wear those worldy earrings, Ro.

September 18, 2011 - Msg 85603: PH, I don't believe we can get into Ro's photo album anymore. She mentioned that some time back, something about the server changing or something, I can't remember. If you were wanting to see that pic of Millie, I have it and could e-mail it to you, however I think I lost your e-mail addy. Seems like I had it awhile back, but I've changed internet providers and lost a bunch of my contact list. Do you still have mine?
Good sermon today. Sin. That's one subject you can't talk enough about.

September 18, 2011 - Msg 85604: Good afternoon, porch. Just got home from church - we had a group lunch for our SS department after services - fun! PH, Hazel is right. The website that carried the photo album closed down. I did have all the pictures on my own computer, and still do, though they're in fairly random order. However, I got a CD from the website just before they went down, that had everything on it. So, any pictures you want, I have and could email them to you. Yes, I have the one of Millie. I've been trying to decide about opening another album somewhere, but just haven't done anything about it.

Boo, you should be able to get dry molasses at any good garden center. I would think the centers at WalMart would have it. I get mine from my friend and neighbor, John, who owns a relatively small neighborhood garden center, so I'm sure the bigger ones would have it.

Well, I feel a nap calling me, so guess I'll answer. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

I got a reprieve from the nursery today and actually got to hear the sermon.

I'll find some this week, Ro (molasses, that is). We have to sprinkle it this week.

Well, lunch is over, the kitchen cleaned up and now I am thinking about a nap...YAWN!

September 18, 2011 - Msg 85607: Asa, Vintage airplane buff? Me too! Got my Son interested years ago and now my Grandson is too! Have gone to several air shows over the years, there is a great one in Michigan, I have gone to it several times. That is why grandson calls me "Grandpa Airplane". We are fortunate to have the National Air Force Museum here in Ohio, (Dayton) it is GREAT! The "boys" make the pilgrimage most every year we make it a special weekend.

Bluegrass under the stars last night was Great! it went on until 11:00 clear skies, good music good food, bonfire,& doorprize! Was'nt Thelma Lou's cousin either....Was hoping REV would pop in and do a set, would like to hear him.
This festival & Mayberry Days just wraps the summer up quite nicely!!....G-F......

September 18, 2011 - Msg 85608: Hmmm. So we have some vintage airplane buffs on the porch! Veerryy interesting! I'm going to ask a favor of you folks. Would you be on the lookout for an old propeller for me? I'd love to obtain one for my son to put up in his hangar. He has that space tricked out so nice - has a couple of rocking chairs, a little fridge, his trusty radio, tools and stuff all neatly hung on the walls or stored on shelving, even has a big rug on the floor! Oh yes, the airplane is in there too! Anyway, in thinking about a Christmas gift for him, I thought about how cool an old airplane propeller would be. I've been online, and you can find them, but they're fearsomely expensive - like over $800. No way can I do that. However, if you run across one for a hundred or so, I could make it happen. Condition is not a deal-breaker. If it's rough, he would just clean it up a little and hang it as is. I did find some pretty nice reproductions that are in my price range, and I may go that way, but I know how he'd love to have the real thing. If you had the history of the piece, it would make it even more special.

Boo, that dry molasses will really help things around the place. As I understand it, it's made by spraying regular molasses over dry wheat bran, mixing it and then drying it out. You'll buy it in bags, and just put it in your fertilizer spreader and broadcast it. It can go everywhere - lawn, flowerbeds, garden, anywhere.

I need to get some cornmeal on my back yard. I've got some dead spots, one is about 6x8 feet, and I think it's a fungus. Cornmeal will fix it, just have to remember to stop and buy some. Seems like there's always something. The roses are completely out of control, need pruning badly, and there's a stand of weeds in one bed that I'd sure like to get after. However, with this dumb brace on my hand and the doctor's strict instructions not to put any stress on the hand, I've been a bit restricted. It's about gotten to the point where, hand or not, I will need help. Guess it's time to call Joe.

Well, Toye Starr just told me she's hungry, so I'd better go feed the little thing. It must be awful to be 7 1/2 inches tall and have to come look straight up at a big old person and hope they understand that you're hungry. If they don't, well then, you're just out of luck! Poor little thing. I try very hard to read what she's saying, and usually I can. Besides, it's suppertime, so it was easy! Blessings, friends! --Romeena

September 18, 2011 - Msg 85609: Football?!! Yuck. I enjoyed a short nap, Asa. Too short, but that's how it is around here. If you get a nap at all you're lucky. On weekends, I always seem to have my kids plus a couple of others and today was no exception.

Glad you and Sherry had a good time Spot. You guys are in my prayers for sure buddy. Thanks for checking in.

Ro, I'll do some checking with some folks I know about a prop. Might not be able to find one for that price, but you never know till you ask, right? And I pray your visit to the cemetery today will be a blessing to you both. I'm sure it will because you're right with the Lord, but I know it has to be difficult at the same time.

Boo, so Thelma Lou pooped on your porch and left a big stain? Boy, if folks didn't know better that could sound real bad. hee hee hee. You might want to try some CLR on that stain. I've never tried it on poop stains, but it works good on oil and rust stains. It might work. Nice topic for a Monday morning, huh gang? lol

Yea G-F. I just marvel at those old airplanes. I joke that in an earlier life I must have been a fighter pilot on a P-51 Mustang or a P-38 Lightning or some such thing. Fow some reason I am attracted to old birds like steel to a magnet. And when I hear one start up, I just get goose bumps. Heck, I may even get a tingle run down my leg. lol Glad to have a fellow admirer on board.
Well best get rolling. Lot's going on today.
Prayers for all.

September 19, 2011 - Msg 85615: Good morning, porch! It sure is pretty in my backyard this morning. We had another little rain shower last night, so all looks fresh and green. Funny - when the sprinklers run, it just never looks quite the same. Nothing does it like rain.

Asa. I know what you mean about those old planes. There's just something about the sound of one of them cranking up, usually a little coughing and sputtering, then they catch and roar to life. I get that little thrill out of it, too. Can't explain it. I thought it was just me, maybe going back to the movies I saw as a child, the newsreels and things, because some of those old planes were the latest thing when I was a kid. If you could find a prop, I would be so grateful. If it's a bit more than I said, I could probably make it happen somehow. My son would be so happy, and the prop would be doubly meaningful for me, because of the connection to a good porch friend!

Well, gotta run. I have to stop and pick up some dry molasses on the way out to the cemetery this morning. David said Brittney had been out there on Saturday, the baby's actual birthday, and was horrified that there are fire ant mounds all over the place. So he's bringing his spreader, I'm getting a 40-lb bag of dry molasses, and we're going to give those miserable things what-for!

Spot, I'm so glad you and Miss Sherry had a good weekend. Keep things just business as usual to the extent that you can, and know that we're praying for you. I put your names on the prayer list at SS yesterday morning. We do serve a mighty God!

Blessings! --Romeena

Asa, GF, the really sad thing about the reno tragedy is that it was 100% preventable IMO! The pilot had modified that P-51 quite a bit, cutting off the wings and increasing the hp, etc. It was too much for the airframe, probably causing flutter, the trim tab came off, and he was probably pulling about 2 Gs and blacked out. Very very bad situation.
Spot- my prayers are with Sherry this week for sure bro.

Beautiful, actually, and the price is certainly right. As I recall, the shipping isn't much, either. I'd rather have the real thing, an old one off a real plane, but if that's not to be, I'll settle for a reproduction. Thanks for caring!

REV, glad you're home, safe and sound. Enjoy your time with the family, and give little Jake a hug from me. I'll bet he and Toye Starr would be a sight together. We probably wouldn't even have to give them nickels to make them play nice.

It's just beautiful here today! Blue sky, bright sunshine, everything is green from the little rain showers we've had, and the temp is just 84. So nice! The squirrels are loving it, there are about six out back right now, chasing each other all over the place. I got some cornmeal to put on the fungus spots in the grass back there, guess I'll put out some birdseed and squirrel treats at the same time. Also, the hummer feeder needs to be refreshed. Boo, We missed you here yesterday. The porch has a big old void when you don't come around. Hope all is well with you.
Is it?

Rev, glad you got a honey to do things for and the means to do them buddy.

Big Maude, you sure do some fine cooking for us here on the porch. I always look forward to your menus.

I will go check out that video G-F. Of all the old birds out there, the Mustang is at the top of my list for some reason. Maybe part because of it's history. I have read that the P-51 Mustang went from conception to it's first maiden flight in something like 185 days? I can't remember the exact number of days, I'd have to look it up, but wow! It was just a shining example of how our parents generation dealt with what was going on. Prior to the Mustang, we had no long range fighter protection for our bombers. At the time the B-17 "s were flying deep into Germany without protection and were getting hammered pretty bad. The 17 was an amazing plane in that it could still fly with tremendous damage being done to it. I'm sure we have all seen pictures of 17's coming back from it's sortie, with half the tail shot off and gaping holes in the fusealage. But when the Mustang arrived, we now had a fighter with the range to escort the bombers, and escort them they did. I believe the Mustang was one of the key ingrediants that changed everything in Europe. Then it got a new type of engine retrofitted for it when the focus became in the Pacific and was a tremendous fightet in nthat theater. That's why it saddened me to see one crash last week. A living bit of history. And I agree MDC. I don't think it should have been modified for racing, but that's the history buff in me speaking. I just hate losing any of these old planes. Breaks my heart.

Possum, is your back all healed up? Well as healed up as they get anyway. Once the get a hitch they never are the same I'm convinced. That's been the experience with mine at least.

Well better get going.

Prayers for all, and special ones for Miss Sherry and Spot.

Yep, I'm on FB,but I must say I do not like the changes! I'm hoping people raise a fuss & they put things back how they were. Why can't they keep it simple, like our Porch? I'm glad Floyd doesn't keep coming up with new fangled stuff for us to wade through!
Floyd, yer the cats!!

Boo,hope your sciatica isn't acting up today. Yeah, you,me, and Emma Watson- ha! Wish I had some of her little blue pills-right now I'm sitting here with a bag of frozen corn on my hip-LOL

Gotta go check the mail-y'all take care!

September 21, 2011 - Msg 85639: Good afternoon porch! Just stopping by during a quick break.

MDC: Dollywood is one of the things owned by Dolly Parton. It is located in the foothills of the Smokey Mountains here in Tennessee near Knoxville in Pigeon Forge. It has Amusement Park rides as well as a mountain/country type crafts, music shows and such. Opens in late March every year and closes after the Christmas Holiday everyear. you can look it up on line. She also owns a dinner theater called Dixie Stampede and a water park called Splash County
that is in Pigeon Forge as well. She has done quite a bit to create businesses and jobs for the folks in that part of the state which is where she was born and raised. She apparently grew up very poor so she wanted to give back.

Gotta get back to work. Prayers and blessings to all especially Miss Sherry and SPOT!

Hello porch family....kinda wet here in SC today but we welcome the rain.

MDC....as Maude posted, Dollywood and Splash Country are very big and alot to do with tons of folks visiting each year. We have been going there for over 20 years. It used to be Silver Dollar City before Dolly stepped in. Very nice and family oriented.

Possum....I agree, I don't like the new FB format.

Asa....yes, I'm so thankful for my "honey" and to be able to do things for her.

Spot....continued prays for you and Miss Sherry!

Gotta get going.....Love and prayers for all my porch family!

September 22, 2011 - Msg 85650: Morning Porch. Nice cool morning on my porch.

Possum, Thanks for the update on Sherry. I will surely continue in my prayers for her and Spot.

Hazel, I hope all is well with you dear.

Boo, How's "the stain" looking? Have any luck getting rid of it?

G-F. I checked out that youtube video on the Gret Eagle. Very excellent. It was neat to see his Grandkids be so touched by it.

First day of Autumn tomorrow. I don't mind that, but I sure hate what follows. Cold, snow, ice, fog! Listen to me whinning already, would you. It's only September and I'm already boo hooing. Somebody call me an whaaambulance.

Well better get it in gear. My clutch must be worn out cause I have a hard time finding that gear anymore.

Prayers for all.

Asa

September 22, 2011 - Msg 85651: Haven't gotten around to trying to get the stain out yet, Asa. Today I am busy cutting the bottoms out of milk jugs so we can put them over the tomato plants to prevent the cutworms from getting them. Also getting crickets in the garden. Hey, our corn and green beans are already coming up! Talk about fast!

Hey Folks

Nice and autumn today.

Spot & Miss Sherry continued prayers.

Hazel-Glad things have ticked upward.

Locally, a young boy committed suicide and it has started to make the national news. He was bullied unmercifully for his supposed s@xuality. He was 14 years old and looked like the sweetest kid. What a shame.

Asa-We don't get much fog here and I can live without the ice but snow and cold I really enjoy.

September 23, 2011 - Msg 85657: Very sad about the young boy who killed himself, Auh2o and he did look very sweet. He was only a baby at 14. I hate all the pressure that is on kids these days and bullying is such a terrible thing. My Sean is like that boy..he has feminine ways about him. The short time I had him in private school he was bullied. He was bullied by the neighborhood boys before he was even old enough to be in school. It is something we have dealt with nearly his whole life. I really believe that if I had sent him to public school, he wouldn't have survived it with the Tourette Syndrome and his femine voice, mannerisms. He can't help it, just like that kid couldn't help it. It is so unfair. Sean started growing breasts at age 13 and I took him to an endocrine doctor who couldn't seem to find anything wrong, but something is wrong. We have an appointment in Houston in November to see an endocrine doc who specializes in hormonal imbalances. We are also having him evaluated for his high cholesterol. Please say a prayer that we get some answers we have been trying to get for years.

No Rev, it is still in the 90's here during the day and the 70's at night. Still feels like summer.

Better get to bed..!

September 23, 2011 - Msg 85658: Time to R-U-N-O-F-F to Mayberry Days looks like another rainy one. Gotta watch out for those check-point chickies, tight budget this year, don't care to make any donations. Will give full report!...Goober-Fife say's Hey!.....

September 23, 2011 - Msg 85659: Good Friday morning porch and happy Atumnal Equinox or something like that.

G-F, I'm envious buddy. Someday I hope to get to Mayberry Days. It may not be till I'm old and have got a long gray beard, but I hope to be able to do it none the less. Have fun and act like somebody. Remember, you represent THE PORCH! :)

Hey Boo, I'll be sure to send up a special prayer for your Sean. I'm just glad he has you and Bruce for his mammy and pappy. He sounds like he needs good and decent parents who will love and nurture him. Kids, and society at large can be so cruel to those who don't fit the "norm" (whatever the "norm" is.)

MDC. I can't think Snowbird. That's the name of a very popular ski resort here. All that conjures up in my mind is snow (and lots of it) cold, wind, and the misery in my back. There are a ton of older folks here who are snowbirds though. Many winter in Saint George Utah, that is in the very southwest corner of the State. It is low in elevation and has very moderate winter temps. Others go on further to Arizona. I hear a lot about a place called Quartzite (sp) Arizona. I know a lot of them have moved their R.V.'s there and just leave them there all year. But I can't even consider that until maybe I retire. And with all thats going on in the economy, I don't know when that will be. I may end up being like my namesake and working until I'm 90. But if I do it will have to be as a guard or something cause I can't keep doing what I'm doing now. Most days my job isn't to demanding, but on occasion it just kicks my butt.

Well speaking of such, I better get rolling.
Hope everyone has a wonderful day.

Prayers continue for Sherry and Spot.

September 23, 2011 - Msg 85660: Oh, and the line of the night from last evening.

September 23, 2011 - Msg 85662: Hi All.
Just stop to say HI.

TOM

September 23, 2011 - Msg 85663: And "hi" to you, Tom. Thanks for checking in. We worry about you when you're gone too long.

"Shovel-ready jobs?" Hahaha! That's really a great line. Wish I'd said that.

As for the weather - would you believe it is 73 degrees here in the Dallas area, at 1:15 in the afternoon? I'm just loving it! I hope we've seen the last of the blistering heat. Now if we could just get some real rainfall - we've had a few little showers, and they help, but about three days of slow, soaking rain would be wonderful.

Eddie arrived today, to do my yard, and had a tree stump in the bed of his pickup. He brought it to me to be the base for my birdbath, as I think I've mentioned here earlier. I wish you could have seen that stump! It could have been hollowed out and a family of gypsies could have lived comfortably inside! The thing was the size of a small car, and must have weighed five hundred pounds, at least. I don't know how he got it in the truck, and I sure don't know how he thought he was going to get it into my back yard. It wouldn't have fit in my wheelbarrow, which is not one of those little sissy garden things, it's a big old bricklayer's barrow! Anyway, Eddie knew it was too big, and told me to forget about it, he'd find me another. Said he knows where there is a smaller one, and he can get it tomorrow. No doubt he will. He's a good friend.

Prayers for Spot and Sherry, all the time. Lord, please hold these folks in your loving hands, give them strength and endurance, and if it is your will, heal Sherry's body from this invader and remove all traces of its presence.

Blessings, friends. --Romeena

September 23, 2011 - Msg 85664:
Hey Tom and all.

Boo-I'm with Asa, Sean made out good in the parent department.

Boo-I know, he was only 14. I'm sure the number of kids that are confused, or what ever ya wanna call it, is miniscule. However, they are just twisted from all sides, small special interest groups who only want to exploit the kid and people who "care" but still deny something is going on and then throw the bullies into the mix...wow.

Asa-That was a great line... man funny. I thought Perry was having an episode when he tried to call Mitt a flip-flopper. At least that's what I think he was trying to say.

Romeena-You've had more shovel ready jobs this month.

"Th-Th-Th-Th-Th-... That's all, folks."

It is in the 90's here today and feels even hotter! Lord send us some cooler weather.

Yes, SPOT and Miss Sherry continue to be in our thoughts and prayers throughout the day. Yesterday i was thinking about how she took such good care of our SPOT when he was in that terrible accident, and I am so glad he is there for her now. God bless them both.

Better start thinking about dinner. Sure wish some of the things in my garden were already ready to be harvested, but I am so thankful for all the little plants that are already pushing up through the rich soil (thanks for Thelma Lou and her boyfriend Bruce). teehee

I'm off to pick up Eloise, and then we're headed for the ball park, to watch at least two and maybe three or more kid baseball games. It's a tournament, so how well they play will determine how many games they'll play. Landry and his team are pretty good, so it could be a looooong day. That's okay, it's fun to watch them, and they sell good hotdogs in the concession stand.
