I was watch a show on the History Channel, How the Country Got It's Stripes. I have never seen it before. I guess each week they show what makes America...America. This episode was about speech patterns in America. It mentioned that the Southern accent really didn't develop until after the Civil War. So, I thought I'd ask my Southern friends what they thought about that.

Still got a little tinge of a headache but not too bad. It's looking like a better day (but clean up after yourself anyway, ASA).

So far this school year is proving to be a challenge in a way I did not expect. I am in the process of working out things with Erin. She is so easily distracted and I remembered that at her school, they worked in individual "stations" which were like little cubicles. They had very little distractions and couldn't even see the child next to them when they were working. So...I tried putting her in her room with her desk facing a corner and it helped alot. She didn't complain about it and found it was easier to concentrate on her work. Step 2 is to incorporate activity breaks and exercise. She has an enormous amount of energy and she wears the dickens out of me! I am also weaning her off the sugar and giving her healthy snacks during the day. Sugar has always had a big effect on her.

According to http://tinyurl.com/5te5pvu, it reports that at the CNN Tea Party debate yesterday, Ron Paul stated in part "that the reason medical costs have skyrocketed is that individuals have stopped taking personal responsibility for their health care".
I am having a mental block trying to understand this remark. Can anyone please elaborate?

PH-I'm with you. I thought the Southern drawl was well in place before the Civil War. As for Ron Paul's statement, the man is an unabashed Libertarian. He wants Government involvement only as a defender of our liberties, no healthcare or no entitlements. He is to the right of all the other candidates for sure. I believe, his belief is that people must take responsibility for their actions. I'm a pretty Conservative guy, and I like Paul, but I don't think we can return to those days. It's pretty hard to put the toothpaste back in the tube. I don't believe we should return to those days. A country as great as ours (don't tell B.O.) has a responsibility to take care of those that CAN'T take care of themselves.

Asa-I like Mitt. I don't know if he spoke to my heart the last candidate that did that was Steve Forbes in 2000. I think the world would be a much better place if he had won. Perry just doesn't do it for me. I don't care for guys who speak first and think later.

September 13, 2011 - Msg 85529: PH, I wish I could explain that comment, but I can't. It makes no sense to me. I've pushed it this way and that, but it still confuses me. Maybe he means people are running to the ED with a sniffle, instead of just blowing their nose? There is a grain of truth to that - a lot of people, especially "undocumented workers" use the ED as their personal doctor's office. A simple $10 basic charge would put a stop to a lot of that. This wouldn't keep people from seeking help that they truly need. They have cameras, phones, iPads, cigarettes, etc. - if they were really sick, they would find $10, but they might be less inclined to just drop in the ED with a head cold or a hangover. Ask any ED nurse.

As for the Southern drawl, or the Texas drawl, which is not precisely the same thing, both were already here when I got here, so I can't tell you much about their origins or the timeline. I think it's interesting that some of the distinctive sounds in a drawl, particularly a deep South drawl, also occur in some Yankee accents. I think specifically of the blurring of the "r" sound at the end of a word, such as "her". In both accents, it comes out as "huh", but in the South it's just slower, and a little softer. Southerners and we Texans both can make three or four syllables out of a one-syllable word, if we try!

Regarding Perry, as a Texan naturally I want to support him, but I have my reservations too. If another state can field a better candidate, I'm all for it. Still, as I've said earlier, unless the Republicans come up with someone better, he will get my vote. I will be voting not so much for one candidate as against another, and that's a pitiful situation to be in.

Well, guess I'll get ready for work. Got to take some clothes with me. Eloise will be having her breast surgery in the morning at 8 - please pray for her. She's pretty scared. They have caught this thing in such an early stage, it's just barely above microscopic, so her prognosis is excellent, but still, it's scary. How well I understand! Anyway, I won't have time to come home and change, so am taking clothes with me and will change there.

Hello porch family...still on the road.

PH....to answer a couple of your questions: I used to put my schedule (years ago) on my website but to be honest with you I just don't get alot of concert attendance from the website. I get tons of more response at my concerts from Facebook than I ever got from my website. The reason being, folks are not going to go to my website on a regular basis but they normally check their facebook everyday. So I'm reaching so many more people that "happen" to see the concert date than I ever have. You would not believe how many folks tell me each night that they saw the concert date on facebook. I know everybody don't do facebook but a whole lot of folks do and it really works for me better than anything I've ever used.
You also mentioned about the Bishop....The fellowship that I've been a part of for many years placed me on their Council of Bishops as an advisor some years back. The YouTube clip you probably saw is something that someone probably taped at a conference and posted it on there because that's the only place that "Bishop" is used. I personaly never use that title (not that I'm against it....I'm very honored that they have the trust in my advice to the fellowship) but the only time it is used around me is at the conferences. That title just don't fit my cowboy hat and boots...lol And thanks brother for the kind words....glad you enjoyed my site.

PH, I can think of a few reasons Ron Paul may have stated what he did about healthcare but the first thing that came to mind is that people need to take more responsibility by educating themselves on prevention and on course of treatment. Most people just go to any doctor in the phone book and agree to anything that doctor suggests, including medication after medication, of which the doctor may recieve rewards from the pharmaceutical companies. Just my thoughts..

You know what I really don't like about Perry?? His really bad hair dye job. C'mon, just let it go natural...who you tryin' to impress, Perry? ;) Seriously, though, I didn't like the executive decision he made about forcing 12 year old girls to get the HPV vaccine.

MDC, are you referring to the anniversary of 9/11 when you speak of emotional stress? Hope you get rid of the "crick" in your neck.

Boo, your explanation about Ron Paul's remark got me thinking. I can see how the lack of taking preventative measures could increase the demand for medical care. And following the rules of supply and demand, that could cause the costs to increase.

I did some internet research on this topic and was surprised to learn that medical spending increased six fold when Medicare was introduced in the mid-60s. So if medical insur@nce causes medical spending (and costs) to increase, what will happen when it becomes mandatory in 2014?

Romeena, funny you should mention about a mandatory $10 fee to control access to a hospital emergency room. Here in Canada, where we have the same problem of non-emergencies clogging up the emergency rooms, some are proposing a $25 fee. Since we have national healthcare, I would not mind a $100 fee if it would decrease the waiting times. Let those who cannot afford the fee use the clinics we have around town.

It is the sence of entitlement that gets me. My job is in Public Housing and it is the same thing, people find ways to have all the "necessary things" but can't pay their rent! And there is no wonder why the rest of us get so ticked off! I am enjoying the porch conversation concerning health insur@nce, etc. That is an interesting question, PH, about costs increasing if insur@nce becomes mandated. I did a little research yesterday on abortion stats, regarding federal funding and read that there are over a million abortions a year and quite a few states fund abortion. If you break it down, 1% of abortions are performed in the case of r@pe or incest, 6% for potential health threat to mom or birth deffects in baby, and 93% for convenience/unwanted pregancy. I didn't find the annual cost of abortion to those states that fund it, though. Another interesting thing I found is (if you put any trust in stats), of those who get abortions each year, 37.4% identify themselves as Protestant, 31.3% as Catholic, only 1.3% as Jewish, 23.7% as having no religious beliefs, and 18% identify themselves as born again/evangelical. I am curious about why Jewish women have so few abortions...I think as a culture their values may be differnt than some...as far as the value of children. Hmmm..interesting.

G-F, as a nurse working in hospitals for years, I saw so many patients abuse the system but it's a real mess...don't know what is going to change things for good. The whole "entitlement" issue is so firmly rooted in a whole generation of people who's parents raised them to believe it.

Boo, Teri Garr had a very small part in a color episode. She was the driver that rear-ended Goober and hurt his back. Her role was very small.
Howard Hessemne was on two color episodes if I remember correct. He was the food vendor at the car convention that Andy and Goober went to. He was also a fisherman on the episode where Emmit is running for city council. Again both parts were very small.
Quiz time. Anyone remember a certain actor from All in the Family having a role in TAGS?

G-F, I suspect your right about all then turtles tasting the same. All bad I suspect. Better use pulenty of spices and herbs to make them more tastey, if thats possible.

Hope your neck is feeling better MDC. It was a tough weekend for sure.

In regard to the debates, I have watched them all. I see some good in all of them. I see some things I don't agree with all of them. So what else is new? The perfect candidate isn't out there for anyone, unless they plan on running themselves. The last two debates for sure (msnbc, cnn) have been used for one purpose really. That is to create contention between the candidates. No two are alike and will agree on everything we want. But all of these folks, I believe, are a darn sight better than what we currently have. So whoever rises to the top from the current field will have my support. I do think the next President will be a one termer though. I say this only because he/she is going to have to make some very tough and unpopular decisions that are going to upset a lot of folks. But I don't see anyway out of it myself. Tough problems demand tough remedies. Guess we will see.

Ro and Boo, sure sorry you're still roasting. It has been wonderful here. Lows at night in the mid 50's and highs around 80. Really pleasant temps. The tree's in the higher elevations are starting to change color. In a few weeks we will take a drive up in the mountains and enjoy the scenic beauty provided by the Lord. Wish you could all join us.

Asa, those temps you are having sound so wonderful. I am just living for the days when we have them, too...what you describe is typical winter weather where I live, except for a colder front now and then. Hope it doesn't get too frosty this winter, though. We are planting our seeds for the fall garden this weekend. Yay! We have really done our homework, too, and have talked to everyone who knows anything about gardening in our area. My mentor is a 80 year old neighbor who has had an amazing garden year round for 50 years. Bruce has done everything imaginable to prepare our sandy soil here, except srinkle the gypsum, which he will do this week. He is still trying to get the well water to that side of the place, laying pipe, etc. So here's what's going into the fall garden after talking to the experts: "Tycoon tomatoes (we already have the plants), bell peppers (from plants), and from seeds we have sweet corn, radishes (bruce loves 'em), sweet peas, green beans, spinach, carrots, two types of lettuce to see which we like best, and we will be planting broccoli, new potatoes, onions and garlic a little later. Oh, and I am going to try a few pumpkins just to see how they do. I think I might start those out in the house until they sprout up and then transplant them. Anyone have any advice on pumpkin growing? My mentor (Miss Ruby) says she never had much luck with them but I would really like to grow some and see if I can have a pumpkin patch next fall.

September 15, 2011 - Msg 85555: Oh, and forgot to mention I canned some new jam yesterday called, Autumn Pear Jam and it is really good. You cook the pears with chopped cranberries (only 2/3 cup), and cinnamon. Really tastes like fall. So, that is on the Christmas list, too. Can't wait to have some tomatoes to make tomatoe sauce with. The tomatoe sauce St. Susan and I made last week turned out so good....SO much better than the kind you buy in the store but it is kind of work-intensive. Worth it, though. The news has been telling us here in Texas that the cost of produce and meat, in particular is going to skyrocket because of the drought and fires. I am contemplating growing my own chickens for eggs and meat. The kids don't like the idea but I told them they could have a few pet chickens that we wouldn't eat and if we have enough of them they won't care of we eat some because they won't know them all "personally" and after taking care of them for awhile, they will be ready to do away with a few! ha. Bruce would do the killing for me but I would have to pluck them..not sure if I wanna do that at all. Anyone have plucking experience?

September 15, 2011 - Msg 85559: Wow - lots of good conversation on the porch today. Boo, I am so jealous of your garden. I'd love to do that, but just don't have the energy, and really no one to help out. Besides, the squirrels would get everything the garden produced. I tried growing strawberries in a raised bed one year. Squirrels got 'em. I have a pear tree - squirrels get them juu-ust before they're ripe. Oh well. As for the chickens, when I was a kid, my dad would buy about a hundred baby chicks at a time (we had a brooder to keep them warm for the first couple of weeks.) Once they got to "fryin' size", he would load them up and take them somewhere in town, where they processed them and he would then bring the fryers home in little individual bags and freeze them. We had a lot of good meals from those chickens, but it all ended one year when somebody accidentally fliped the switch that controlled the power to the outbuilding that housed the freezer. We came home from a two-week vacation to find a freezer full of rotten chicken. You don't want to even imagine the smell. He shoveled the chickens into a wheelbarrow and buried them far, far out in the pasture. We tried to clean the freezer, but ended up having it hauled away. It was unusable. After that he taped a tuna can over that switch, so no one would accidentally flip it again!

I am so sorry that things are not going well for Miss Sherry. Spot, both of you are continually in my prayers. We serve a mighty God!

There was good news yesterday for Eloise. Her surgeon is strongly confident that they caught the cancer early enough, and that he got all of it. She's feeling fine today, in fact, we'll probably head out to do a little mousing around in a little while. Her son is here from Battle Creek, but is leaving this morning. Thanks for your prayers and concern. She's a great gal - one of the best.

That was Rob Reiner (Michael Stivic, alias "Meathead") and the episode was the one where Goober ran the contest at the gas station, and didn't draw a line to indicate that $200 was the total, not a prize. Rob Reiner was a helper in the print shop. Now, does anyone remember the ep where Jack Nicholson made an appearance?

I think 2012 will be a year where I will have to just hold my nose, say a prayer, and vote. As I said before, I'll be voting against a candidate more so than for one, and that's not a good thing. We are living in perilous times.

As for the garden, you'll probably do just fine. Squirrels don't usually pose much of a problem in big open garden areas - too far to the safety of a tree! Rabbits - now that's another story, but as you said, just the very presence of the dogs may be enough to keep them away.

Hey, my surprise lilies are coming up. They're about eight inches tall. In about three days, they'll be two feet tall and will look like a firecracker bursting, with a spray of red blossoms. They're so pretty, and such fun to grow.

But of course I'm a sucker when it comes to kids so I guess I'll go for him. He's 10yrs old and a super good kid.

I have heard that turtle story before G-F, so I had an idear what it was a meaning.

Ro, you answered my trivia correct about Meathead in TAGS. And somebody answered your trivia right about Jack Nicholson being in two episodes. So for todays trivia will require you to have some TAGS know how and some Apollo 13 experience.
There are a lot of connections between TAGS and the movie Apollo 13. Let's see how many y'all come up with. Some are obvious, a couple are quite obscure.

Gotta get rolling. Much to do today, weather allowing. It's supposed to rain later today and if that happens my plans will change.

September 16, 2011 - Msg 85589: You people are breakin' my poor ol' hort! It's still hot here but at least we got a little rain today. The trip to Houston went smoothly. I let Sean drive for a little while (once we were OUT of Houston) and he did great but there were some crazy drivers trying to run over him because he was doing the speed limit. You know what he said, and I am not kidding you...someone cut him off in traffic and he said, "I'm gonna run up an alley and holler FISH!"...he really did..so funny since i just posted that here! haha

MDC, speaking of congressmen/women, today in Houston I passed by the hospital where congresswoman Griffiths was brought to recover from her injury. If you have never been to Houston, you just would not believe the huge medical center there. The best of the best serve the sick in Houston. Sometimes I marvel at how much money must be spent there. Just Texas Children's Hospital alone is huge and the Shriner Children's Hospital is down the street. So many hospitals in the span of just few miles! I think Houston is quite a place. I wouldn't want to live there because it is so busy but it is a special city with such cultural diversity and so much to see and do.

Glad to hear Miss Sherry is off to the lake. Thanks for the report, Possum.

I wanted to mention to you Hazel, I'm sure you remember Maudie, from the old Gossip Club. She was the one who lived not far from me. She passed away a couple of days ago. I saw her obituary in the paper. I thought you would want to know that. Very sad. She was only 49. And thanks for reminding us about Millie. I know you two were quite close. Can't believe it's been 4 years.

MDC, I have been hollering about the cfl's now for some time for the very reason you posted. Disposal! Trust me folks, this is going to become a huge deal. We have been dealing with flourescent bulb disposal for years now in the industrial world. A major pain. Now that the population in general will be facing this, look out. Now the govt. has it's hand in it, all bets are off as to what will happen. "We're from the Govt. and we're here to help you" HA! What have they done. Mandated you buy bulbs that cost 6 to 7 times more money, that are supposed to last much longer, but have not really proven to be the case, that give off less light, less light rendition, multi-colored light rendition, and a problem with disposal that we haven't seen yet. Yea buddy, big brother knows whats best for you. Now you got my jaw muscles working MDC. Way to go! LOL

Boy, you guys are good. Even better than good. Poor Horatio, I didn't know Ron Howards wife and Daughter were in Apollo 13. I knew his Mom Dad and Brother were. What parts did his wife and daughter play? That movie is a favorite of mine. I love the line uttered by Tom Hanks as Jim Lovell to his wife as they sat on the patio looking at the moon when Apollo 11 had landed there. "We now live in a world where man has walked on the moon. And it isn't a miracale. We just decided to go!" I always wonder if Lovell really said that, or it was just a movie line.

Auh2o. Solyndra. I do believe that is a name we are going to hear about for a while. This one has some real potential, unless the media plays ostrich..... again.

Well I think I'll go sit on the porch and watch the rain, take in some of that cool fresh air, and contemplate life in general.
