Boo, I'm not that familiar with underground wells. Did the well exist when you moved there or did you have to dig to reach it? Also, if you use it as a food source, do you treat or filter the water before drinking it?

PH, we had to dig the well. We have city water that we use for drinking but we could drink the well water but should filter it if we did. We water the animals with it and will water the grass, the garden and will use it to grow grass for the goats and donkey on the back fourth of our 5 acres. I forgot how far down they dug the well but they have to go down quite a ways to get water that is safe to drink and isn't full of sulphur. I know it cost us over 5,000 to have it done...ouch. We do have neighbors down the road who built before the city put water out here and they drink the water from their well after filtering it.

Good Friday morning porchters. A 3 day weekend is on tap. Our temps have dropped as promised as a cool front blew in. Very nice out there this morning. Boo, you would just love it. I hope that Sean feels better today. Poor feller.
Ro and Boo, those sheep dogs are something aren't they. That story you told Ro is amazing. Some breeds just have it in them I guess. Our little Barney loves to stick his rubber hamburger toy under the couch, or behind the entertainment center, and then spend the next half hour digging away at trying to get it out. That's the breed of the Doxies. They are burrowers, and boy he just loves doing it. The Border Collie are very smart dogs. And likewise seem to cotton to sheep herding quite naturally. But the ability they have to work with the owner/ trainer is what I find amazing. Fun stuff to watch for sure.
I'm a bit stunned this morning friends. We had a co-worker not show up for work yesterday. His wife called around noon time to tell us he had blacked out that morning while eating breakfast and had fallen and hit his head pretty hard. She called 911 and he was in ICU at the hospital, on life support. Well I got a call last night about 8 o'clock telling me he had passed away. I just couldn't believe it. They think he may have had a blood clot, or maybe a stroke. He was 56 years old and was loving being a Grandpa. His wife is really going to have a hard time with this. She has a number of health issues and was quite dependent on him. I hope their adult children will be up to the task of helping her now. Very sad and very unexpected. If you would keep the Brand family in your prayers today, it would be appreciated.
Homemaker, how good to see you. I have missed seeing you. Hope you are well. Same with you Me They. Good to see you check in.
Hey G-F. Thanks for coming to my defense for a bowl of soup. MDC gets pretty tough on me sometimes, just because I don't practice good bullet maintenance. But he only has one bullet to tend to. I've got 6. A big difference! :)

Sorry Homemaker for not seeing you waiting to sweep with your broom. I'll try to remember to look around next time.
auh2o, you probably know this so this is for the others here. Canadian money is unlike USA money for two major reasons:
- coins replaced Canadian $1 and $2 paper money;
- USA paper money is all green, but Canadian paper money comes in different colors ($5 is blue, $10 is purple, $20 is green, $50 is pink, and $100 is brown)
Thanks SPOT for explaining what "FO" is. It sounds something like the Orange Julius I used to drink but can't find anymore.

Good morning, porch! Hey, PH, I remember Orange Julius! It's been years, but there used to be one in our local mall, and they were pretty plentiful everywhere. Then suddenly, they're all gone. Wonder what caused that?? Oh, and that Canadian money sounds colorful and pretty. I'd like to see some. Bet I can find some pictures online.
Well, G-F, I think I'd just raise a ruckus and demand my monkey suit! Anyone who has to work in a zoo-like atmosphere should at least have their very own monkey suit. Actually, we had a very decent night last night. Wasn't bad at all, got out on time, and don't have to go back now until next Wednesday night. I would imagine they'll be calling for help, but I don't have to go unless I choose to. Might do a four-hour gig for them - not bad money, I'd get time and a half. We'll see.
Asa, I'm so sorry about your co-worker. That's pretty hard to wrap your mind around, I'm sure. Just out of curiosity, do you happen to know if he was taking Coumadin or Pradaxa? Prayers for the family, for sure.
Boo, when I was a youngster and we moved to the country, we hadn't been there but about six months and our well went dry. My dad called a man out to drill it deeper. It was at about 60 feet when it went dry. So the man started drilling, went about 20 feet and hit water again, and told my dad he'd go another 20 or 30 feet, to get deep into the water table. Daddy told him to go for it, just keep going, and he started drilling. Suddenly the whine of the drill took on a different sound and the man said he had punched through into a "lake", which apparently was actually the Edwards aquifer. From that point on, it was just a matter of stringing pipe and dropping the pipe lower and deeper into the water. We ended up with 640 feet of pipe and a well that would likely never run dry. As the man said, if it ever does, the whole state of Texas is going to be in a world of hurt. I know what you mean about the water being cold. There was always a rime of frost on the pipe nearest the ground, and our tap water was so cold it felt like your teeth would crack. Good, sweet water too. Daddy had it tested, and when the man gave him the report he told him if he wanted his water any purer than that, he didn't know where he would find it. We used no filters or anything, didn't need them. I still miss that water. Right now, our water tastes like it has been filtered alright - through a flower pot! It tastes like dirt smells. It comes from lakes and reservoirs, and there have been algae blooms from all the heat. Even though the city filters and certifies the water, you can still taste it. Awful! As soon as the weather cools down, that taste will disappear, but it surely is unpleasant right now.
Well, I think I'll eat some cereal with blueberries (they're so good right now!) and then try to catch a couple of hours of sleep, then I have a full day after that. Blessings! --Romeena

They are little hunters, I know that from experience. My dad has one that I gave him years ago and that dog is the light of his life. The poor thing has to be a hundred in dog years, is so fat it's belly drags, it's missing teeth, blind from cataracts and is still fervently protective of my dad. They have to put her up with the home health nurses come over. My mom always says if Dad goes before the dog, we will put the dog to sleep and bury her with him! ha
I am so sorry to hear about the Brand family, Asa. Such a terrible shock. I will pray for them today. You just never know how long you have in this world so spend it loving God and people.
PH, many things in life are unfair, aren't they? This is just such a tough place sometimes..just the way it is. We don't have to like it but it is what it is. I just hang onto knowing that someday things will be better. When I was young I fought things so hard...I made up my mind that because I was a Christian, nothing bad was going to happen to me. Interesting thought, but not biblical or realistic. I used to have an idea that if I did everything right, that was going to keep things easy. How silly and immature, but I was young. When a big trial finally really hit me, it nearly drove me to suicide in my 20's. I try to teach my kids that the reality of life is that life is not fair, bad things happen to everyone and pain is a part of life...I think trying to pretend nothing bad will ever happen sets us up for a big crash when something does. I also tell them what my dad always told me when i was a kid; that 90% of what we worry about never happens, most things that do happen are not as bad as we anticipated, and worrying about something is like trying to make a getaway on a wooden horse. :)
How neat about the well, Ro! I am thinking ours is at 500 and something feet. The water doesn't look clear, though, so I would feel funny drinking it without filtering it. Our tap water here doesn't taste or smell bad and I usually filter the tap water and keep a jug in the frige and it's really good. I find that if I keep filtered water in their for the kids they will drink alot of it. I don't buy sodas or koolaid and such so their only options are water, milk and tea so they grab the cold water alot. With milk being nearly 4 dollars a gallon I try to limit their consumption. If I let them them they would drink a gallon a day.
Sean was feeling pretty bad last night and was complaining of pain in his right side at the level of his waist. It got so bad he was in tears for awhile and then it subsided and he finally went to sleep. I guess I will take him to the doctor today if its not better.
Better get going with the chores. The guys are here to finish the drywall and painting in my laundry room (after the big flood), so I will most likely be doing piles of laundry for labor day.

They had the typical old white farmhouse in the country. No air-conditioning but big ceiling fans in ever room. Whenever I return to Chicago, I stop at Portillo's, on the corner of Ontario and Clark streets, for my Chicago hot dogs. They are located a few blocks north of the "loop", and have a conveniant drive-up window.
Romeena and Boo, reading your well stories sure got me thirsting for a cool underground drink. As a result, I have begun to investigate this for my area.
Boo, I grew up something like you did thinking that as Christians, our lives would be easier and better than others. Boy was I in for a rude awakening. The challenges that we have experienced sure have made me question my faith on more than one occasion. And although I'm less active with organized religion today, I still believe in God. Good morning, porch! Asa, if your friend was on a blood thinner, it very likely was Coumadin. That was the drug of choice for years, and a lot of people take it. It does have its place, usually given to people who experience atrial fibrillation. During those episodes, if they last long enough, it's possible for a clot to form on the wall of the affected chambers of the heart. Then when the fibrillation converts and a normal rhythm is restored, that clot can be dislodged and enter the blood stream, where it can cause a stroke or go to the lungs and wreak havoc there. The danger with it is that the blood is so thin that even a relatively minor cut can cause profuse bleeding, and a small blow to the head can cause fatal cerebral bleeding. A serious bump, like in a fall, is easily fatal.
Coumadin levels are notoriously hard to regulate, as so many things affect the performance of the drug. Eating leafy green vegetables will interfere with it, and the blood will clot more easily. Other things can potentiate the drug's action and the blood becomes like water. The active ingredient is warfarin, which is found in rat poison. Warfarin is NOT a poison, like strychnine. It is a blood thinner, nothing more. In rat poisons, the warfarin is in such high concentration that when the rat ingests the material, his blood is immediately thinned to such a degree that he simply bleeds out. The drug does what it is supposed to do. That's how it kills, and that's why people on Coumadin have to have their blood checked regularly, to be sure it's not too thin, but is still thin enough to prevent clots.
That's too much trouble for me, and there's more risk than I'm willing to assume at this point. I lost an aunt and an uncle, both after bumping their head, bumps that would have just been annoying if they hadn't been on Coumadin. However, they were, and both died of intracranial bleeding.
Pradaxa is a new drug that supposedly is as effective as Coumadin, but is much easier to regulate, and doesn't require the freq
September 03, 2011 - Msg 85398:
I hate when that happens. This big old brace on my hand hit the wrong key, and posted my unfinished message! Anyway, Pradaxa doesn't require the frequent monitoring that Coumadin does. If my own episodes of atrial fibrillation, which are very brief, should start extending into enough time that a clot is a possibility, then I may consider taking it. Probably not, but I never say never. However, a doctor irritated me a bit a few weeks ago when he said "You could take Pradaxa, it's a better drug than the rat poison." That was an insult to my intelligence, and I very politely and sweetly told him so. I don't think he meant to be condescending, so I was nice about it, but I let him know that I know the difference between a systemic poison and a blood thinner. Don't try to scare me with the "poison" thing, it won't fly. About Pradaxa, I don't know enough about its mechanism of action to know if it will ever have a future in the pest control business, but if it thins the blood to the same degree that Warfarin does, then I don't want it. I'll stick with my relatively harmless little baby aspirins, and trust God.
Well, that's enough! Blessings, friends. --Romeena
September 03, 2011 - Msg 85399:
Ro, both my parents have been on coumadin for years...Dad for 30 years (because he has an artificial heart valve and he lives with atrial fib since heart surgery in 1980), and while it is a pain to regulate, we have never had any serious problems with either of them. About 15 years ago, dad went in for knee surgery and the coumadin was stopped for a few days prior to surgery and he threw a clot that, amazingly, went to his left hand. It felt like an elephant was sitting on his hand but after some heparin therapy in the hospital, he was fine. I worry more when he is off of it than about him being on it. For him, it's a neccesary risk. I believe it is why mom has not had another stroke, too. She had three strokes while on Pl@vix and aspirin and after starting her on Coumadin 10 years ago, no more strokes. She also took a few falls since, one in which she fell backwards onto the concrete and took a good hit to the back of the head. She has been very lucky. I mentioned to their new practioner about the possibility of switching to Pradaxa but according to her, there are some disturbing things happening to some people on the Pradaxa. It's hard to know what to do but I guess we will continue with what works for now. I wish I could just give mom aspirin but I am afraid to. I never, ever expected her to live to be 85 after the horrible stroke she had in 1999. She survived three, total and is still alive and in her right mind. She can walk with the use of a walker but she is plagued with dizziness which nothing helps. That is so sad about both of your uncles, though. Really terrible. In your case, I would certainly do what you are doing and take the aspirin instead...absolutely.
Well, supposed to be 102 here today and we are so tired of the heat. I have never in my lifetime seen this many days of temps in the 100's. This has been a summer to remember and i feel like a hermit. I sit in this house with all these windows and long to be able to enjoy the outdoors again but with the heat and humidity it is just impossible.
Better get going. I need to go visit the folks today.

Romeena and Boo, too bad we did not have this conversation years ago when my mother was switched from Warfarin to Coumadin upon her hospital discharge. The only warning I received was that she needed to come in to the doctor's office every two days. Unfortunately, it took only one day for stroke symptoms to return her to the hospital where she passed away during the night. I believe it was the Coumadin, and I will never ever forgive myself for not demanding more information about its side affects.

September 03, 2011 - Msg 85403:
PH, Warfarin is another name for Coumadin..they are both the same medication. Could she have been taken off the Coumadin and put on something else? Was the stroke a hemmorahgic stroke (a bleed in the brain?) or cause from an occlusion of a blood vessel by a clot? Do you remember? It would be good to know exactly what happened and what the cause was precisely. Was the Coumadin responsible because it caused a brain bleed, or did she have a clot that caused the stroke because she wasn't on an adequate blood thinner? I would sure be curious to know.
Boo
September 04, 2011 - Msg 85404:
Boo is right, and I echo her concern. I'd be very interested to know. My initial thought is that her prescription was first written for the generic Warfarin, and later was written for Coumadin - the same thing. This would not be unusual, and if the doctor who discharged her was not her regular, pre-admission doctor, then it's no surprise. Some order generics, some order by trade name. If this is what happened, then perhaps it would be some comfort to you to know that the medication wasn't to blame, that what happened was in "the plan", and you have no reason to blame yourself.
My own mother was scheduled for a valve replacement on a Friday morning, and just before they gave her pre-op, her surgeon came in and said they were sending her home, to return on Tuesday for the surgery. There was a man in the ED who needed an emergency bypass, would die that morning without it, and my mom's surgery was an elective, as far as timing. It had to be done, but the timing was adjustable. So that's what happened. She was re-admitted the next week, the surgery was done, and she had an undetected stroke during surgery. That can happen, and when someone is under anesthesia, there are no visible signs of the stroke. Anyway, she was never really herself after the surgery, and passed away after a few weeks and more strokes. My dad was distraught, blaming the doctor for "putting her off like that", and himself for allowing it to be done. Of course, his reasoning was a bit clouded with his Alzheimer's disease, but I was finally able to calm him by telling him that none of that mattered, that she had an appointment with God on the day she passed, and she kept it. I believe that, and finally, so did Daddy.
My decision not to take Coumadin is personal, and as I said, I never say never. The drug is not without risk, and any doctor would (or should) tell you that. However, it's one of those situations where you have to weigh the risk of taking it against the risk of not taking it, as Boo has done with her dad. For me, as I said, my runs of atrial fib are so brief that they do not pose a threat, and until and unless that changes drastically, I'll not take the drug. Actually, I think my cardiologist was happy that I refused. He is more or less bound by standard practice and peer review to order it, but if I refuse, he's off the hook. In fact, my old cardio said plainly that he agreed with me. He just retired, and I'm seeing his partner now, and we had pretty much the same conversation.
Medicine is both an art and a science, and as such, is not exact. I only wish it were. There's a reason why college science credits are only good for five years, and in some cases, only three. It's because things change so rapidly, as our knowledge base expands. I'm reminded of the song "Is a Puzzlement" from "The King and I." One line from the song - "In my head are many facts, of which I wish I was more certain I was sure!" Ain't it the truth!

How wonderful to see one of TOM's poems again. Thanks Tom. :)
Asa, I sure might take you up on that sometime. Never know when you might need to know something about electric, plumbing or HVAC.
Glad you are feeling some fall ASA..it's over a hundred right now at 6:45pm. We have a strong wind from the North but it is blowing hot air on us. Terrible. This has GOT to let up soon.
Been a good day. I had nursery duty with babies and there was only one really cute little bald boy who was about 6 months old...big blue eyes. The sermon today was on H*ll and I was glad to miss it.
Wanted to say thanks to all of you who prayed for Bruce, he is so much better now. He came to a point of surrender and just gave up his worries to the Lord a couple of weeks ago and it made all the difference. He is now happily digging trenches for his sprinkler system and deciding on what to plant in the fall garden.. God so many time answers prayer on Bruce's behalf..I have seen it again and again throughout the years.

I know what you mean about "something in the air", Asa. We're feeling it here too, and it isn't just the cooler weather. Personally, I would like summer here a little longer. It goes too fast in Wisconsin.
Baby is doing well. Although he likes to sleep during the day and then wants to be up more at night. Got to cure him of that.
I know some of you want to know his name, and I was just going to say it outright, but then I got to thinking about when I think Boo mentioned that the porch was getting kinda quiet, with no new games to play. So I thought, why not make this into a game, where anyone who wants to can try and guess his name. I saw some of those earlier attempts and no, they're not it.;) Funny, but not it.
So take a guess and for the winner I will treat them to a Huckleberry Smash down at the filling station. Oh, and I will add a clue if nobody gets it, and will try not to make it too easy(cause I think with just a couple clues it should be pretty easy to guess).
Ready? I'll start out the first clue with: It is an "old" name.(I know, pretty vague, isn't it? But I can't think of too many clues that won't give it away right off.)

Woohooo! It is 9:54 a.m., and it is 72 degrees!! I love it! That "feeling of fall" that Asa mentioned, that "something in the air" is here. The sky is crystal clear, a beautiful blue, a stiff breeze is blowing from the east, of all things, and it's just lovely. I can't see how it could be true, but it seems to me that there are flowers blooming that weren't blooming yesterday. The crape myrtles have opened new clusters, roses are blooming that haven't bloomed in weeks, pentas and periwinkles seem to be clamoring for attention, and the yard is just full of joyful birds and exuberant little squirrels. I don't know if this will last, but it sure is great right now. Thank you, Lord!
Eloise is having everyone over today - Jerry smoked a brisket, and we'll have tater salad and slaw and baked beans, and ice cream and lots of laughs. Should be a good day.
Names, huh? Charlie? Horton? Oh, I know, I know! Rumpelstiltskin!

Plenty to do today...this will not be a holiday for me. I am washing windows and doing a couple mountains of laundry since I couldn't get into the laundry room for a few days. They still aren't completely finished but the dry wall is in place, textured and painted and it looks good. They just have to finish putting some of the cabinets back in place. Better get going..

Yes, it's been a tough summer, but hopefully we are seeing better days. It was in the 60's here this morning, which we have not had any temps day or night in the 60's since May. This has been a record-breaking summer for us. I can only hope that it gets cold this winter. As crazy as the weather gets, who know? Maybe even some snow. It snowed about 150 miles north of us last winter and I told Bruce if it happens again, I am getting in the car and driving there! I have not seen snow now in 4 or 5 years and I miss it.
Yes, TOM, please send that rain to Texas! :)

PS-How is your back, Possum?
September 06, 2011 - Msg 85440:
Noah! Now that's a great name - very good choice, Sterling! I like it even better than Rumpelstiltskin. Seriously, that's a very fine name, a strong name. I like it!
Yes, Texas it taking a beating right now. The drought has brought a of farmers and ranchers to the edge of ruin, and now the wildfires on top of that. We're not alone, though - lots of folks in this country are hurting, some from weather issues, some from other problems. "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from Heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land."
Well, I've got a doctor's appointment this morning, with the surgeon who did the carpal tunnel release. I'm hoping he'll let me shed this big old bulky brace. I think he will, though I must admit I'm really more comfortable with it on than off. It's just that it gets in the way so much. He did a lot of work way down in my wrist and the base of my thumb, all through a 1 1/4" incision in the heel of my hand. It's amazing what they can do through scopes these days. Anyway, my wrist is still bruised, and stiff and sore. Without the brace, it moves and that hurts significantly, which may be just part of the deal. Sooner or later, I'll have to loosen that wrist up, but I'll wait for his go-ahead. I don't want to start it too soon and cause damage. Once he says to start, I can handle it.
Tom, if you want to send some of that rain this way, send it on. I'll pay the freight! --Romeena

Good afternoon porch, just checking by for a visit. I am back to work today after a long week end. Been busy on my end of the porch!
We had a major water leak on my end of the porch. somewhere between the house and the water meter at the street. No sure where, because they could not detect any water in the yard. needless to say we had to have a new line dug and rerouted to the house because the old water line was old (about 30 years probably). The young men who did the work were very good and professional but it was $$. Now we have water and hopefully no leaks on the outside again!
Patrick came home for the Labor day week end and has safely returned back to school. He is only about 3 1/2 hours away and a pretty easy drive.
What a lovely name, Sterling! Noah. can't wait to hear how he is growing.
We have had about 48 hours of nothing but rain around my end of the porch. We had some bad storms on Saturday with lots of wind, rain and trees falling. Our local Hobby Lobby sustained a lot of damage, the entire back wall and much of th roof was blown off by a "wind down burst" on saturday. It caused a major gas leak and many of the stores and resturants around the area had to close. It was a mess! Hopefully things will get back to normal this week.
Hope your wrist heals quickly Ro.
Better get back to work. Prayers and blessings!
Big Maude

Maude, all that rain sound positively heavenly! Isn't it funny how relative things are? We would love it here in Texas.
Thanks for the prayers on behalf of my fellow Texans. I feel so sorry for the folks involved.
Still working on the laundry and schooling the kids. I tried using a timer with Erin today. No breaks until the timer goes off. I am starting to think she has attention deficit or something...it is so hard to keep her focused!...or maybe that is just being a kid. ;)
She has to adjust to doing schoolwork at home because she is having to concentrate on her work while knowing her TV is in the next room, and so's the computer and so many other things that would be more fun to do. We'll get there and I will have about a million more gray hairs.
Hope all goes well with the wrist, Ro.

Good evening, porch. What a beautiful day we had today! I don't think it got above 90, and there was a light breeze all day - so nice! In fact, it was so cool and pleasant that I stopped at the pond store on the way home from the doc, and got a couple of new fish. I figured the pond water would be cooler, and not as much of a change for them, and the store lady agreed. So I bought a beautiful fantail comet - bright orange with a huge white, flowing fantail, with orange rays of color extending down into the fins. About six inches long, and a gorgeous fish. I also got another shubunkin. I already have three, about five inches long, but this guy is more like about eight inches, and marked beautifully. Shubunkins are really just very fancy goldfish, with lots of calico markings and fancy, filmy fins. One common characteristic they share - all of them will have blue or blue/gray splotches somewhere on their bodies. They're so pretty. I wanted to get another small koi, but I already have two, which are growing fast. Pond lady said for my pond, two koi are enough, as they can get very, very big, like 15-18". Unlike goldfish, who will self-limit their growth according to pond space, koi tend to keep growing. If they get too big, eventually I may have to sell them to someone with a larger pond or give them to a park or something. That should take several years though, before they get that big.
Possum, how's your back doing? That can be so painful, and really get you down. Hope you're up and running again by now.
I just learned that my cousin's granddaughter and her husband lost their home in the wildfires around Bastrop. It burned to the ground. He sent me a picture, and it's just a big mound of ashes, nothing standing but the fireplace. Apparently no one was hurt, because he didn't mention that (he's not very wordy, unlike me) but the house is leveled. Heartbreaking! Please pray for Brea and John.
I have to wear this brace for another two weeks, darn it. The incision is healing well, though I have caused it to open a couple of times by using my hand too much. There's still significant swelling in the wrist, and he confirmed that he did "quite a bit of work" in it. Thus the extended time with the brace, until the tendons he manipulated get fully seated and settled in. I'm still amazed that there has been so little pain in it, but it's true.
Well, guess I'll think about heading for bed. Wouldn't hurt me to get a full night's sleep for a change, I guess. Blessings, friends! --Romeena
