They are awesome- I can certainly relate to Rev wanting to get away from the keyboard & back to his peanuts before his daughter eats 'em all! LOL
Well, we had some gust wind,a few rain bands yesterday, but that was all we saw of Irene. Thank God! Today is sunny & breezy. Praying for NC's coast & the Northeast.
The worst that Irene brought to me was yesterday- Laci's school was cancelled & she came to visit me for a while. We were outside & she realized we'd taken her swing down in anticipation of the hurricane & she got so mad she grabbed me & tried to bite me on the jaw! LOL Hurricane Irene? Heck, Hurricane Laci!!
Boo, that is so strange about you & bees!
Goober-Fife- you said it! And may I just say I'm happy you're here. You came along and fit right in!
Well, going to sit out on the deck and enjoy some of these Irene breezes-y'all take care!

Happy Saturday Porch, hope everyone is okay and those in the path of Irene are safe and sound.
It is a breezy 77 degrees on my end of the porch! A chance of rain this afternoon. Not sure if we will have any effect from Irene or not. we sure could use some rain though!
My friend had her surgery yesterday and things went pretty well. The surgeon seemed pleased with things and said they checked 2 lymp nodes and found no cancer in them. YEAH. The reconstruction sugeron was pleased as well. Now she begins the recovery phase and in a few days will know if she will need any type of chemo or radiation. Thanks for your prayers!
Patrick seems to of done well with his first week of college independence! I have done okay as well. I guess all the issues with my friend has taken my mind off of him! Anyway he calls or texts daily which makes me feel better. Classes will start Monday so hopefully things will go well.
I have started doing a Zumba exercise class 2-3 x a week. It has been fun but I have realized I am certainly "no spring chicken any more". I have fun though and seem to feel a bit better so maybe it is worth it.
Possum watch out of Hurruicane Laci! sounds like she packs a mean bite!
Lunch menu will be: grilled cheese, chips, pickles. sweet tea and cup cakes ( white cake with chocolate frosting). sweet tea, lemonade to drink.
Prayers and blessings to all!

Well, PH, I'm no Sharon DeSpain (I still like being a small fish in a small pond) but I am just longing for some fresh conversation, I guess. More intimacy on the porch, I think..in the sense of learning more about each of you and your families and lives.

Good evening, porch! I wish ol' Irene would have flung a breeze or two our way, but she didn't. Guess her pitching arm isn't that strong. Sure is hot, and sooo dry!
I miss some of the spirited conversation too, but I have no intention of getting back on a political soapbox. I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to climb down. Or somebody would knock me off of it! I'll admit it's pretty tame lately, but it's safer.
Boiled peanuts? First time I ever ate them was on a river run on the Seadoos with my son, in Florida. He trailered the Seadoos to the Oklawaha River and we started off. We rode the very muddy Oklawaha downstream until we got to where the crystal clear Silver River merges, then made a hard left and rode the Silver River upstream to Silver Springs. Absolutely beautiful ride, beautiful setting, the Silver River is unbelievably clear. The Oklawaha is almost arrow-straight, and you can ride wide-open, which is fun. A blue heron took off ahead of us and flew at least a mile straight down the river, about thirty yards ahead of us. Most of the ride on the Silver River is a no-wake zone, so you just idle along, just enough speed to make headway against the current. There are wild monkeys along the way - escapees from old Tarzan movies that were filmed there have multiplied and colonized the area. We saw gators lying along the bank, but they didn't bother us. When we got to Silver Springs, we circled the big basin where the Silver Spring flows - like a huge sinkhole, with water bubbling out of it, a deep and dark hole, no sign of the bottom. Very impressive. Then we rode back downstream, using just enough power to give control of the Seadoos, made a hard right back into the Oklawaha, and rode upstream on it until we got back to the jeep and trailer. As for the peanuts, my son stopped on the way to the river and bought us a big bag of boiled peanuts, and they were still warm and were delicious! We didn't finish them before we got to the river, so we left them in the Jeep, lest we be tempted to discard shells and leave any mess in the river. So, on the way home we finished off the peanuts. They were cold, but still so good. I've never found any boiled peanuts here, and have never tried to boil them myself, but maybe I will. If I do, I'll let you know how they turn out.
Well, gotta go feed a grandson. Eloise and I stayed out at their house last night, because Landry had a 9 a.m. baseball practice, but afterward we came back to Irving. We decided to divide and conquer, so she has Hudson and I have Landry. We've been working on a jigsaw puzzle, but he's getting tired of it, and I sort of deserted him anyway, to come in here. Guess I'll rustle him up some grub. Not sure what, but we'll find something. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Hello porch family.
auh2o.........we have a little place here called "The Peanut Shack". We normally just buy them there when they are in season. And yes we also boil them ourselves sometimes. Spot posted above how to boil them....that's pretty much how we do it also.
Some places have them year round but I don't care for them once the new crop is gone. Some folks will freeze them and re-boil them throughout the year....not as good to me. So after the summer, I'm through with them till next summer.

I don't get it...do you let the peanuts dry out after you boil them...you leave them in the shell? Doesn't the shell get moist and soggy? This is just not sounding very appetizing to me.
That trip down the river sounds like fun, Ro (minus the gators)! They have a cavern like you described in Marble Falls, I think...forget the name of it. Supposedly if you follow the hole down it will take you two three separate underground caverns, one of which contains some skeletons of divers who didn't make it.
Had mom-in-law over for her birthday last night. She turned 79 yesterday. She has been having alot of stomach trouble so I kept the spice down...just a very tame meatloaf, mashed TATERS with cream gravy, and some fresh green beans sauteed in olive oil and garlic with some salt and pepper. I made a chocolate cake with homemade fudge icing like my mom used to make at christmas time...the kind of iciing you cook on the stove and pour it over the cake and it kind of dries like fudge. Really good but rich. After dinner went just sat around and talked some memories...nice evening but by the time I cleaned up and go the dishwasher going it was 11pm, which is late for us southern Mayberry-types.
Well, I guess I had better get ready for preachin'. It's supposed to be 106 degrees here today! Whew! The rain we got the other day got soaked up so fast it didn't even cause a mosquito. Talk about dry. I'm still wearing my shorts on my head, Asa.
Oh, ya'll please say a prayer for the kids and me as we start our homeschool year tomorrow. I need to keep on schedule and stay organized. I cooked and put at least 2 weeks worth of meals away in the freezer this weekend and that should help but I know it is going to be tough for me to stay on task every, single day and make these kids tow the line. Thanks.

He decided he would go ahead and dig trenches out to the goat barn so he could get the well water out there, as well. Can you see where this is going??..It was nearly impossible to keep Thelma Lou and the goats out of the trench while he was trying to lay the pvc. Goats were jumping the trench, landing in the trench, Thelma Lou was walking in, stepping on the pvc. It was a fiasco but he managed to get it done...plus it was a hundred degrees out there. Good evening, porch! Will all who were in Irene's path please check in? We're concerned about you!
PH, I was watching the GREEN channel this evening, and saw a documentary about the renovation of the Sovereign of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean ship. That was extremely interesting, and then it was followed by a special about the Queen Mary 2. One thing they showed was exactly what a stabilizer is on a huge ship. You'll remember we mentioned them in conversation earlier. They showed an animation of the stabilizers in action. There are compartments low down in the hull of the ship, with doors that can be opened from the control room, and function much like the doors for the landing gear compartments on an airplane. When those doors open, large outrigger-like devices are extended out and down from the hull. These have the effect of preventing or at least slowing the roll, or side-to-side motion of the ship. Unfortunately, there is nothing to offset the pitch in rough seas, the up-and-down motion. At least, without the roll, the pitch isn't so bad. It's when you get both together that your stomach doesn't know where it's supposed to be. I'm fortunate in that I'm not subject to motion sickness, but Eloise is, to a small extent. She handles it well, though, and if it gets too bad, she takes some dramamine.
I talked to the doc, and he let me take the bulky dressing off my hand. I just have to keep a soft gauze pad over the incision line, and keep the lace-up wrist brace on at all times. Fine with me, the whole thing is too ugly to display right now. The whole palm of my hand is blue and purple, and the inside of my wrist for about four inches is purple, blue, green and yellow! Pretty spectacular, but it will clear, of course. I'm just grateful that I have no pain in it. Oh, it's sore - hurts if I try to open a jar or something, or pull on the car door handle, so I just don't do those things. Left undisturbed, it doesn't hurt at all. Haven't even taken a Tylenol - nothing. Haven't needed it.
Well, our rain went away and never dripped a drop, and the temp at 7:45 is 102. Sigh.
Blessings! --Romeena

Hey, REV. I can just picture little Jake, snoozing in your lap. Eloise and I got some laughs out of Toye Starr yesterday. We were driving out to a halfway point, to meet David and Brittney and deliver the boys to them. Toye Starr went along, and because of the boys and Bentley being here, she had missed her usual afternoon nap. The boys and Bentley were in the back, and she was sitting on the front seat, between me and Eloise. Eloise told me to watch her when I could. The traffic was at a standstill at several points, and when I could watch Toye Starr, I could see her big old brown eyes just slowly closing, and her little head would droop lower, until she'd quickly jerk it back it up, widen her eyes, and try very hard to look alert. It reminded me of Gomer in church! Too funny! When I got everyone delivered and we finally got back home, I sat down for a few minutes before getting ready to go to work, and she was in my lap immediately, and asleep in about ten seconds. Short nap, but she made sure she got in a little cuddle time, anyway.
Aren't they sweet? Poor old 45-lb Bentley would just love to be a little lapdog, and frequently comes and plops his big old stiff-legged self in my lap, trying to look small. It's a little sad, but I'll hold him and let him sit there for a short time. He just loves it. He's like the older child in a family, who remembers when he was the baby in mama's lap, and now he's too big, but will try now and then anyway. One of mine used to sit in my lap at times until his feet were on the floor! Ya gotta love 'em! --Romeena

I had time to come back and take a shower and get something to eat, as nothing is happening yet. MIL is with my wife. I am a little upset with the hospital, as I don't think that the overnight stay last night was necessary. Even her doctor went home. We arrived there at about 11pm, after we called them about my wife's blood pressure being higher than usual, and they monitored her, and her blood pressure there was lower, so I thought we would be sent home, but the doctor asked if we wanted to have the baby now as we were in a good place. Well, if I had known it would be the next morning and still no baby(or labor), I would have suggested that we just do this today when everyone is awake and rested. But maybe they had good reason to suggest we stay there, I don't know as I am not a doctor.

Good morning, porch! Sterling, I'm hoping and praying that by now things are clicking along, and maybe the baby is here, or at least getting close. Regarding the overnight stay, don't be too upset with them. My guess is that they preferred to keep her there where they could watch her, rather than let her go home and risk a thrill-packed ride through red lights to get back there if things got under way suddenly. Also, there are logistical concerns involved in a discharge/re-admit turnaround. Sometimes ins#rance gets in a snit about it. It may have been a totally unnecessary stay, but you can't be sure. Better safe than sorry.

Oh, and I had to laugh at your "rush" to the hospital comment, Ro. We live just a couple blocks from the hospital. :) And even if we had to go through some red lights, there are only about three of them in town. I don't know why, but I was more weak-kneed last night when the doctor said they will induce labor than I was today during the delivery.

Thanks again for all your prayers!

Congrats Mr and Mrs Sterling. A healthy and happy baby boy. When you said your wife had to do all the work, I hope you was referring to labor and not also conception. :)
Rev, is that clam chowder your wife makes cream based or tomato based. I really cotton to the cream based my own self, but I could probably be talked into the other. Either way, homemade sure sounds good. That's one thing I do enjoy about cooler weather. A hot bowl of soup really hits the spot. (not our porch spot)
Sounds like you had a busy day Boo. Don't go and throw your back out. Pace yourself.
Hey Possum. You doing better? Hope so. Glad the storm wasn't too bad for you.
Hey MDC. I bet your looking forward to the temps cooling some. We are supposed to only be in the 70's here tomorrow. That will feel good after all the 90's we have been having.
Ro, glad your surgery went well and you have no pain. You'd make a terrible Emma Watson. ;)
Well best get the old bod moving. I sound like a bowl of rice crispies in the morning. Snap, crackle, and pop. What a shame!
Prayers for all, and again, congrats to Sterling and family.

Congratualtions, Sterling! Thank you for taking the time to let us know that all was well. I was afraid you might be too busy but you didn't forget your porch buddies. :) Sterling, you really should consider getting a facebook account so you could post pics of the baby...pretty please??
Asa, why does it somehow make me smile to think of you having 90 degree temps and suffering along with the rest of us?? ;) One thing is for sure, you will be cold before you know it. This morning I was thinking about how much I would love some cold weather but you can never depend on it down here in the humid, bug-ridden, jungle-like climate of the south texas coast.
Had some homemade plum jam on my english muffin this morning and it was sooo good! I am draggin' my wagon this morning, though. I woke up around 4am with one of those headaches in the back of my head and neck and finally had to get up and take some advil. I was able to go back to bed for awhil and it was gone when I woke up, thankfully, but this is going to be a tough day. Plenty to do, as usual but I am thankful I have a family to do them for. :)
Be back later if I get a break.
Boo
PS- Possum, I think I heard Sterling say they are naming the baby "Gomer"..or "Dooley"..?? ;)...or was it "Jelsik"?
August 31, 2011 - Msg 85343:
Hmm.. I heard the baby has red hair & they're gonna name him "Opie"- LOL
Personally, if they're going with a Mayberry Name,I'm hoping they name him after "Hog Winslow"- Hog Holobyte has a nice ring to it!

Will he be a Packer's fan, GF?! Well, if he spends enough time at my mom's he will.
I don't know, Boo. I really hate facebook. Maybe if I can use my porch name on there. :)
No, possum, no red hair, but lots of black hair.
I am just home for a while because I have to put together the crib(that might help), as well as take the car seat out of the box(that helps too).

I've got some lentils left over from yesterday, Spot. I love lentils, at least the way I cook them. Lots of good stuff in them.
I agree with Boo. What's his name, Sterling? I'd love to see a picture of him too, but I share your Facebook concerns. I haven't joined it, and probably won't.
We had a very rough night at work last night, probably exceeded only by the ordeal the day shift must have had. When I left at eight this morning, it wasn't shaping up to be a pretty sight. Would you believe I got a call at three this afternoon, asking if I'd consider working tonight? I don't blame them, they're desperate, but the answer was no. I worked last night, am working tomorrow night, and have no intention of making it three in a row, not even for time and a half. My old bod just won't take it. Besides, in my opinion, management created this monster, and I think they should deal with it. They need to get a bit more creative, and quit trying to solve it by throwing money at it.
Well, there is a hungry-looking little squirrel out there, nosing around the bare feeding area. Guess I'd better go put out a few treats for him. I've got some pizza "bones", (I don't eat the back crust, too many carbs), and some stale cereal. He'll think he's in squirrel heaven.

A great big CONGRATS to the Serling family. I am so proud for you all!
Asa....she makes her clam chowder with milk (cream) base with NO tomato in it. It is so good.
Ro....don't blame you for not going in tonight...it's just not worth it.
Well let me watch a TAGS before bed. Think I'll watch "Prisoner of Love" episode.

REV, I watched the first Malcom Merriweather ep and the Rafe Hollister Sings ep tonight with the kids. Both kids have colds so they got their cold medicine and it's time for everyone to go to bed. TAGS is a nice way to end the day.
See ya in the morning.

Good morning Porch. And we made September. Where has the summer gone? Time moves right along it seems. Before long we will be talking Christmas and snow and I'll be whining about cold and the misery in my back. Ain't it grand?
Rev, I wish I could sample that soup. I love clam chowder. There is this place in Pismo Beach California that we just love. The best clam chowder soup I've ever had. Plus it is right on the ocean front. Spectacular sunsets over the Pacific Ocean.
Boo, how'd your young-uns catch colds this time of year? I hate summer colds. I don't mind winter colds, but I hate summer colds! (actually I hate winter colds too but I just wanted to take off on Lydia)
Ro, there is an event going on close by this weekend I know you'd love to see. It's the National Sheep Dog Championships at a place called Soldier Hollow. Boy if you have never seen a working sheep dog in action your missing something. This is one of the best things in the world to watch, if you love dogs. Amazing stuff. We won't be going this year because of the wifes health, but have really enjoyed it in previous years. I'll see if I can find a link to it for you somewhere.
Well better get going.
Pray and hope all is still well for Sterling and family.

Hey M-T! It is great to see you. come by more often. I miss you and your moulages. You scamp you.
Hope the kids are feeling better BOO.
My friend is recovering pretty well from her surgery. I visted with her last night for a while and she seems is pretty good spirits. She has learned their was no cancer in her lymp nodes and none in the margins which is good news. She said they are calling it stage 2 because of the size of the tumor. Now she had to wait for another report to come back to see if she will have to have any kind of treatments. Hopefully all this means she has a good prognosis!
Better get to work. Lunch menu will be burgers and fries from Five Guys Burgers! see you there.
my treat.
Have a blessed day.

Great video, Asa. Those Border Collies are amazing dogs. Did you ever see the movie "Babe"? Wish I could go to the competition you speak of. Sorry you and the Mrs. will have to miss it this year. :(
"Hey" to Me-They! Great to see ya.
Thanks, Maude. I am hoping the kids will be better today. Sounds like your friend is doing well. I wanted to tell you that I have a friend named Sandra that I have known for years. Her husband is a retired police officer who was shot in the line of duty but they had tried to exist on his disability and they have always struggled. Well, about 10 years ago, Sandra went to my sister to tell her that she had a lump in her breast that she had been ignoring because they didn't have medical insur@nce, of all things. Susan said the lump was the size of an orange. Sandra finally went to the doctor at my sister's insistance and it was cancer, which had spread to her lymph nodes, as well. As you can imagine, her prognosis was not good. They removed the cancer and began aggressive radiation and chemo. The radiation was the worst part but she got through it...weeks and weeks of it. Sandra has one son who was in his teens at the time and her one dream and hope was to live long enough to hold her grandchild someday. Well, one Sunday during church she went up to be prayed for and the preacher prayed for her and he said to her, "You are going to live to hold your grandchildren". She believed that to be the Lord's promise to her and here she is still today, perfectly fine. Her son is in his 20's and not married yet. Hope your friend lives to hold her grandchildren and has a very full life from here on.
Better get going. Getting a late start today.

Good morning, porch - and howdy-do to Me-They! Great to see you - wish you'd come keep your rocker dusted. We miss you.
Asa, thanks for that link! It's great, and I'll be sharing it with my dog-loving family. My Scottish son-in-law will appreciate the brief appearance by the bagpipers, too, as did I. The dogs are incredible. It's just amazing, the way they work the sheep. You may remember me mentioning my daughter's little dog, Snickers, in times past. Snickers is gone now, but she was an amazing little girl. Little mixed breed, presumably part Scottie and maybe part Schnauzer, just a little thing, about 15 pounds. She was as smart as any dog I ever saw. One day, my daughter's neighbor's goats got out, about 15 of them, and were into her flowers and her veggie garden, and generally making a mess of things. Robbi was out there trying to shoo them back through the fence, to utterly no avail. Suddenly Snickers appeared and started circling those goats like an angry little bee, and in no time at all she had them in a tight little group, then proceeded to start moving the group toward the hole in the fence. One by one, they went back into their own pasture, and Robbi fixed the fence. She had no idea Snickers could do that, but she did it like it was just nothing. Amazing! Just instinctive, I guess. We all miss Snickers, a lot. Some of you may remember her picture from the old album - she was a little grizzled gray dog, and in her picture she was up on her haunches, head back, ears sticking straight up. I think I had captioned it "I Can Almost Fly!" She was a great little lady.
Eloise wants to go to East Buffet today for lunch, and since that's one of my favorite places, it sounds like a good idea. However, one of their featured items is peel-your-own shrimp. Normally, that's just part of the fun. I'm just not sure how I'm going to manage it with this big old splint on my left hand. My fingers are free, and they're mobile, but how I'll keep the splint and the dressing clean, I don't know. I had a challenge last night just peeling an avocado. Maybe I can cut the fingers out of a glove?? I'll figure it out.
Well, gotta run. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Sterling, you could open a FB page as your porch handle and make it very restrictive on who gets to see it, when you are setting it up. Basically only we who know it would be able to find the page. Then you could close it in about a month Just a thought.
Well, very glad to see August go! It was the hottest on record. Many records were broken including the most days of 110 or over IN A ROW...12!! Ouch! I don't care what Rafe says, now THAT is dang hot! ha

Been kind of quiet on the porch but I've been busy anyway.
Please say a prayer for Sean. He is feeling much worse this evening with this bug he has. I really want him to feel better and get on with his school work. Erin seems better and didn't get it so bad. Tomorrow is my 17th anniversary so I hope i don't catch their bug.
Made a canned some more jelly today. Sean had been asking me to make apple jelly and I made that (super easy) and canned about 8 pints of it. I also made some raspberry jam and some apple-pumpkin butter. Everything turned out great but too much cleaning up! Whew!

That's funny, Ro (about wearing yourself out looking for ways to take it easy!) haha. Funny thing is that some days I get tired even when I'm not so busy and some days I have alot of energy. Today was one of those high energy days when I just didn't really get tired. I find that if I stop at around 2pm and take a 30 minute rest I do very well. I don't usually sleep during that time, but will lie down and read or think in the peace and quiet. Sometimes I doze off for a few minutes but not usually. Today I just read for a bit and then got back up but I had lots of energy to continue.
This evening since Sean was sick, Bruce and I did his chores and I went out to refill the water tank for the critters. I was able to use water from our well for the first time and I was thrilled because the water was ice cold! It looked a little bit cloudy and had just a little of that mineral smell to it but boy, it was so cold coming out of the ground. Tomorrow I am going to fill the dog's pool with it and see if they will get in it to cool off. I have a feeling they won't like it that cold, even in this heat. The weatherman tonight said that it is going to be 102 and 103 on Saturday and Sunday but on Tuesday we will get a little front that will bring the daytime highs down to the lower 90s, which we have not seen in a long time, and the nightime highs will actually be in the 60's. We haven't seen 60's since last spring. Yippee. I hope the weatherman is right or he might get himself lynched by the locals.
Sean is up after a long nap and seems a bit better. i think his fever broke. Hopefully tomorrow will be the turning point for him. Erin, of course, is unstoppable. Wish you all could have seen her today when she was supposed to be sick. She was wearing a cowboy hat, carrying a babydoll, and making tents in the living room.
