June 03, 2011 - Msg 84278: Good Friday morning porch family. I hope you are all well today.
My goodness, lots of prayer needs today for lots of folks. I will include you all.
Boo, I'm sorry to hear about your Mom. I pray it isn't cancer, but if it is might be treatable for her. That is a tough call as to how to treat it at that age, when you factor in the other health issues you mentioned. But I know you will seek the Lords help in making the decisions you have to make and will follow his promptings. Isn't it wonderful to have the blessings of divine counsel to lead and direct you?
I am laughing as I picture the three of you in that Dr's office. hee hee hee. Sorry, but the way you describe your Dad looking and pointing cracks me up.
Welcome home Rev. Glad you got to meet in person another porchter. That is always fun. I have only ever met one. That was New Neighbor. Her Daughter attended a University not to far from me, and she and her daughter met with my wife and I one night at a restaraunt. Had a real nice chat with them. Good good people.

I hope to meet up some day with Hazel. We are only about 5 hours away from each other. I think she'd be a hoot in real life too. Maybe someday.

Hey Possum. Hope things settle down so you can be here more. I'll even cook you something. Don't know what, but it will be something. :)

Have a safe fun trip Ro. Please drive careful. I'm not sure why, but I feel very much impressed to tell you that. Drive careful!

Well better get going. Lots to do.

Asa-The last few days the weather has been awesome, as far as I'm concerned, high's in the upper 60's and lows around 30.

Rev-Good to see ya posting again.

Any of the politico's following the Congressman Weiner story? I always find it a bit puzzling that when a bleeding heart does something like this he's either setup or it's considered being naughty or simply playful mischief. Remember last when Congressman Lee did nearly the same thing? Because he was a Republican it lead every news cast for a week. Oh well... should be use to it I guess.

I pray God will help you in your support of your mother and things will work out for the best. Forgive me, Boo, but somewhere I have not seen the name Jubi! In all of my time here I guess that slid by me. Who is that?

Possum - Good sweep! Nice and clean!

Ro - Have a great trip and be safe. I dont know who you're going to go visit, but if I was me, I'm just gonna forget the whole thing! LOL!

Jubi is a young friend of ours who has been battling cancer for several years (she and her family attend church with us). She is 13 now and in remission at this time. Possum has been praying for her, especially, and often asks about her.

One young friend that I have often talked about here is Sean's best friend, Josh, who comes out of a bad family situation and has an alcoholic mother. We have been taking him and his step-brother, Nathan, to church with us for several years. Well, my porch friends have prayed for that situation at times and I am happy to report that Josh is graduating from high school tonight. Despite his problems and even dyslexia, he has overcome many of his challenges and is graduating! He is a great kid and goes to church every sunday. He is just one of those naive, sweet kids that never causes any trouble. We love really love him. He has some challenges ahead of him as he faces college without much support at home but I know the Lord is with him.

Better get back to the chores. Have any of you watched any of the news coverage of the Casey Anthony trial? Unbelievable.

Well we finally got some warm temps here today. A mixed blessing for sure. To much warm to fast and the run-off is gonna swamp us. But It's gotta come down sooner or later.
Hope everyone is having a good weekend. I finally got some more corn planted today. My first planting is up, but very stunted from the cool temps. Anyway, should have plenty by August for a good corn bust. Circle your calenders.

Asa

June 04, 2011 - Msg 84293: Wow, corn sounds great, ASA. Bruce and I visited a couple of farmer's markets in our area and spoke with some local farmers, asking their advice. We are in the learning and planting stage of our gardening venture. I guess we will be putting in a fall garden this year. Bruce is preparing the soil (or should I say sand). We have to till alot of stuff into the sand before it is worth using. We are starting to compost and gathering fertilizer. I think we have decided to grow some fruit trees on part of our property that just isn't really being used right now and we will be getting our well dug in the next month, I believe. We are talking about having our own little produce stand here in our town because there is not one near us. I am thinking of calling it "Mayberry Farm". I could can some pickles and such and sell that...I was thinking of making some good dill pickles and calling them, "Clara Edwards' Blue Ribbon Pickles". Anyway, we are looking at alot of work and investing some time in it but I think we can get a good return. We were talking to a lady who grows a garden and sells her produce out of an old, rusty trailor around town (in Corpus Christi) and she can bring in hundreds of dollars on a good weekend. I noticed, though that while there are people at the farmer's markets with vegetables, there are few with fruit, so if we can get some fruit trees going in the next few years, that could really be good.

"Hey" to NN and G-F!

Boo

June 04, 2011 - Msg 84294: Hey Boo. That sounds ambitious for sure. But I bet it would go over well. You are doing what I would suggest for sandy soil. Compost, and lots of it. It usually will take several years of heavy composting before you will see your soil really transform, but your crop production will improve right away. Sawdust or even small wood chips will help build up sandy soil fast. Just be sure to add nitrogen to it when doing so. That will help it break down quicker. And corn loves nitrogen. So if you plant corn, mix some straight nitrogen into your soil before planting.
Watermelon does good in sand usually, and suprisingly doesn't require that much water. But it may not be the case in your area.
Let me know how it goes. I'll trade you gardening help for cooking tips. How does that sound?

June 05, 2011 - Msg 84296: I'm home! We only stayed one night in Fredericksburg, because David had to be back to teach SS. We did see Tyler graduate (wearing an Honor Society collar, no less) and then went back to my daughter's house (his mom) where we had "college food". We had Ramen noodles, Totino's pizza, PB&J sandwiches, chips and salsa, pop tarts, some fresh fruit, and cake. Drank sodas and tea, and generally had a lovely time. Then today, everyone drove over to San Marcos, where Tyler was in a "fun vault" contest. He's a pole vaulter, and this was just a friendly competition, no official affiliation or anything. He did well. He'll be starting freshman classes at Texas State there in San Marcos in the fall. We had lunch in a good Mexican restaurant before the vaulting, and during the event, the little kids tubed in the river that ran right through the park where we were located. (Adult supervision, of course.) We had a lovely time, and then David and I and his two little boys and Toye Starr loaded up and came home. Oh, Starr got to go inside in the restaurant. David bought her the cutest little carrier, looks like a pink gym bag except it has mesh panels in it, and I just tucked her in it, and carried her right into the restaurant and put her beside my chair. She went to sleep, and no one even knew she was there! No way would I have left her in the car, even though it was parked in the shade. It was also 96 out there, shade or no shade!

Anyway, I'm glad to be home. My girls always go to great pains to make me comfortable, and this was no exception. Still, there's no place like home, and no bed like my own bed. Thank you folks for your prayers for safe travels. God was with us all the way! Blessings, friends. --Romeena

Thanks for the tip, ASA, and that would be great. I would welcome your advice and experience. Do you or the missus do any home canning of things from your garden? I am excited to start doing that. I was just reading a recipe for canning homemade spaghetti sauce once you get some tomatoes from the garden. Interestingly, Sean seems to have the green thumb in the family and we just sampled his first tomatoes yesterday. Talk about good! We will just make agriculture part of his home school curriculum and this should be a great learning experience for him.

Better get ready for preachin'!

Saw one I never remember seeing before about the guy in jail who can sing tenor and Andy springs him from the jail long enough to sing with his barber shop quartet. Can't believe I had never seen it, but never had. It had one of those appearances from an actor that played two different characters. Lester Scoby was in it, but his name was Tom.

Had a nice Sunday and has a couple of girlfriends over this evening and we got some good visiting done. Now its time to get a shower and chill for the rest of the evening. See you all tomorrow with my coffee. I'll bring extra.

We use to do a lot of canning a few years back. Really enjoyed it and it was a great savings when raising the young-uns. But with her health being what it is.... no more. We did do a Rasberry/ Peach jam a few years back that we are still using. Good stuff. I'm hoping one of my Daughters will step up when the time comes and offer to do some for us. The youngest is a stay at home Mom and pretty domestic. She is a darn fine cook too.
I know the variety of tomato is important when making sauce. I think it's the Romain variety that makes the best sauce. They are not as good eating off the vine (still better then anything store bought though) but great in a sauce.
If you guys have a County extension office in your area they can help you a lot, especially with testing your soil and telling you what it may be laking, pest spraying schedule for your area.... that kind of stuff.

Glad your home safe Ro. I was worried about your traveling for some odd reason. Now you better get out there on that fish pond! Hop to it! :)

Asa

June 05, 2011 - Msg 84300: That's "Roma" tomato, and you're right. They make the best sauce because they are meatier and contain less liquid (I just read that yesterday in my "Learn A Month" magazine). ;)

You know, I did call the county about having someone to come out and test the soil and help us with some advice on what to plant in our area. They said someone would be calling to schedule a time to come out but I haven't heard from them in over a week. I guess I will call again on Monday.

That raspberry/peach jam sounds great. I might try that.

June 06, 2011 - Msg 84311: Mornin' Honeys and Dears. I was a little late getting here. I slept in (yawn) and then had to go let the mutts out of their kennel. The little old lady who has a garden across the street brought me over some big, beautiful MATERS from her garden this morning. YAY!

Asa, Serendipity, it is! I am certainly going to grow corn. There is a man that lives down the street from and grows some awesome-looking corn in this soil so it can be done. Here is what i expect we will try to grow throughout the year: corn, green beans, sweet and new "TATERS!", tomatoes (Roma), leaf lettuce, broccoli, cucumbers, okra, yellow squash, pumpkins, cantaloupe, watermellon and some peach, Valencia orange, and lemon trees. Those are the things that I know folks grow in my area with success. I would love to be able to grow a few apple trees that would produce but you don't see that around here. There are two types of apples that will grow here but I don't know what it would take. One thing is for sure, though, you never see anyone selling good apples in these parts and they are sure in demand. The ones you get in the grocery store are pretty terrible most of the time. I am going to try to grow enough pumpkins to have a pumpkin patch for people to come buy pumpkins. That is a BIG deal here in the fall and the stores often sell out of pumpkins or charge alot for them. I would love to some day grow a bunch of Christmas trees and have a small tree farm for people to come and pick their own tree. There is no place within hours of us that offers that and I am finding out in my researc that there are types of pines that like the sandy soil and would do well here. Anyway, its just a thought, but I have to tell you that Bruce and I have been so concerned about Sean and his learning problems, and worried about what he is going to do and we had been stepping up the prayers when we got this idea. Sean is one of those kids that, like most kids, doesn't like to do what is not fun, but when he is interested in something, he does it 100%. As I mentioned he seems to show alot of interest and potential and I am beginning to wonder if this could be something he could do to provide a living for himself. In this area, with Texas A&M being here, there are alot of opportunities to get involved in agriculture as a career. Who knows? I met a guy once who's specialty was killing bugs that attack cotton crops. He made quiet a salary doing it, too.

Well, I've yacked enough.

Oh, one thing I wanted to mention to you, especially MDC, is that I have turned over my ministry at the drug rehab to two of my friends who attend church for me. I have been getting burned out and needed to step back and let someone else take over for awhile. I handed the reins over to a young woman named Ashley who was actually a missionary to China. She came back home 2 years ago and met a marries a very sweet young man and they are wanting to get more involved in the Lord's work here. She has been going with me now and then to the rehab and she does well with the girls. My friend Dianne will continue to go out there with her and of course, I will go from time to time if I want to or help out with things when needed but after nearly 5 years, it was time for me to turn things over to someone else. It was a hard decision to make and hard to let go but i trust the ones I have left in charge, and I trust the Lord...He will continue his work there with or without me! ;) Wanted you to know because you have been so faithful in praying over the years. The work is still going on and there are still many hurting children there so we will continue to pray. Thanks for your encouragement and support these past years. :)

Boo

June 06, 2011 - Msg 84312: Good morning, porch! Wow, all this talk of agriculture and growing tasty things for the table - makes me jealous! I grew up with a garden most of my childhood, and learned to appreciate it so much. There's really not a veggie I don't like, and as for vine-ripened 'maters, oh lawww! I do love 'em! I used to stop off in the 'mater patch on my way to get my horse. I'd saddle up, tuck those 'maters into a little sack tied to the saddle, and away I'd go. I'd eat 'maters all day! BTW, I challenge you to try a PB&M sandwich. Just like a PB&J, only you put sliced 'maters on it instead of jelly. Gooood!

Asa, you're so kind to be concerned about me. I don't know why you were, but perhaps your prayers averted something that we weren't even aware of. You never know. I do know that we had a perfectly wonderful weekend, and felt safe the whole time.

Now, my friends, a very serious request. Please pray for my precious DIL, Brittney. She's David's wife, Eloise's daughter. You may rememgber that a couple of years ago, she noticed a spot on the back of her leg and had it checked. It turned out to be a melanoma, and she had the Mohs procedure - a form of deep and wide excision - to remove it. They felt good about the removal, had clean margins all around. Now, she has discovered a spot on her shoulder, and saw the doc last week. The doc is almost certain it's melanoma. She removed it and sent it for biopsy. If it is melanoma, another Mohs procedure will be done on the area to try again to get all of it. The question is, whether it's a new primary. Of course, the best outcome would be if it's not melanoma at all, but if it is, it's best if it's a new primary. If it's a secondary, or metastatic lesion, that means the original one on her leg had already seeded and apread. In that case, it would be very, very serious, and would mean some really heavy treatment. The prognosis would not be terribly good, either. Frankly, I'm scared to death, and will be hammering on Heaven's gates until we get an answer. Please, please join me. Eloise, of course, is cold with fright, but in her typical fashion, is very stoic and calm outwardly. David - well, my David is stalwart and supportive of his wife, business as usual, we'll worry about it when the time comes, etc. That's what Brittney needs from him, and he's doing it. He's a special young man.

Guess I'd better go rustle up some lunch. I brought home three beautiful 'maters, a gift from Robbi and Richard, and I'm trying to think of some really creative way to eat them. Shoot, I may just slice one and put a little salt and pepper on it! That's hard to beat.

Blessings, porch! --Romeena

June 06, 2011 - Msg 84313: Oh, almost forgot! Boo, I'm vetting you could grow some awesome strawberries in all that sand. My dad's family, down around Poteet, grew strawberries and watermelons for market when I was a child, and they were soooo good! Black Diamond watermelons are what I remember, and you rarely find them anymore, but they're delicious. They quit growing them for market because their shape doesn't ship well. The elongated melons stack better and take less space than the big old round Black Diamonds. Sure would be fun to grow some of those sweet old things, at least enough for your own use. I'll bet you could sell 'em, too! --Romeena

June 06, 2011 - Msg 84317: Ro, I was just thinking about Brittney yesterday and wanted to ask you how she is doing. Will certainly be praying, just like last time and will put her on our church prayer list without using her last name. My heart hurts for Eloise. She has certainly been having her share of trials.

BOO- Thanks for the heads up. I will continue to pray for Ashley and team. remember even Jesus "retreated' once in a while. Prayers for you too.
Take care all,

June 06, 2011 - Msg 84319: Thanks, MDC.

Ro, some of my friends were telling me that there was alot on the news today about a treatment breakthrough for melanoma but i didn't see it myself. Hopefully and prayfully, this will turn out to be nothing to be overly concerned about with Brittney. If it is melanoma, I'm sure there is a very good chance that it is primary. She is on my church's prayer list and we will be praying for her and your family. You have a strong family with alot of faith and love and the Lord is with you. I would like to go ahead and pray a prayer here on the porch that you all can join in on if you feel led. Dear Father, I thank you for your care of your children and for your great mercy toward us in our weakness. Even though we have faith, sometimes we are terrified when our loved ones are threatened and I know you understand that. I want to ask you to please give your grace and peace to Romeena, Eloise, Brittney, David and the boys, and all of the family who are concerned and praying. We ask that you would keep Brittney in good health and that this latest biopsy would be benign. We ask that no matter what, you would bring blessing out of this present trial. We ask that you would give Brittney many happy years on earth in which to serve you and raise her children. We know that you can do all things. Hold Brittney and her family in your hand and do great things on their behalf. Give them the faith to know that you are in control and give them your great peace. I pray a special blessing over Eloise, that you would calm her and give her an extra dose of your peace and assurance. We love and thank you. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Allow me to say Amen to the beautiful prayer offered by Boo. I also heard about this breakthrough drug for Melanoma Ro. But lets pray it can be dealt with locally.

I'll grab a couple of them sammiches Spot. Thanks for the feeding.

Boo, sounds like some great plans for your property. Ar orange tree's a possibilty at your place? Dang I love a fresh orange. Everytime I visit my Uncle in Ventura I try to go when his Orange tree is producing. And I'm kind of glad you decided to take a break from your ministry. I always feel your spread kind of thin Dear, and you can only do so much before you put your health or family at risk. But I'm sure you don't need me telling you something you already know.

Better get it going. Another busy day on tap.

Prayers for all, especially Britany, Eloise and there families.

June 07, 2011 - Msg 84322: Actually ASA, oranges are about the only fruit trees in my area that just flourish like crazy. I see them in people's yards around here just dripping with fruit, all over the ground, too. Tangerines do real well, too. Oh, and thanks for the encourging words, concerning the ministry to the drug rehab. You're right, I can't do everything for everyone successfully. I guess my plate is about as full as its ever been right now.

I was up late last night watching TAGS DVDs with Erin. She really wanted me to stay up and watch it with her and that was fine but now she is asleep and I woke up way too early. Gonna be a long day, i think.

Auh2o brought up the Congressman Weiner thing the other day and it looks like he finally fessed up. What is the matter with these crazy politicians?! Why does politician and pervert seem to go hand-in-hand these days? And then there is the history whiz, Sarah Palin. Oh, brother. I think she needs to listen to Andy's story of Paul Revere.

Better get going. Be back later.

June 07, 2011 - Msg 84323: Good morning, Porch family!

A beautiful and sunny day on my end of the ol' Porch!

Ro - I am a tomato nut! I sometimes have my wife buy tomatoes and cut them up for supper and I'll eat them as a side dish! LOL! I love tomato sauce too. Like when you bite into a pizza and the sauce oozes out of it. Yum! Some years ago, my g'ma and g'pa had garden and g'ma would make a vegatable plate to go with lunch. She load it down with tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and carrots. I was like a kid that couldnt keep his hands out of the cake icing. I would sneak up and try to steal a tomato slice or cucumber slice and she'd see almost every blasted time! LOL! My sincerest prayers for Brittney. I feel so bad for our entire porch family! It seems to just keep coming in waves!

Boo - Wonderful prayer! Nice job and an Amen from me too! I'm glad to hear that you have peace with your decision to let go and let God...so to speak.

SPOT - Gimme some eggs there and I'll be on my way!

Hey to Asa,G-F,Hazel,MDC,Possum,auh2o,TOM,Maude,REV and the whole bunch of nuts! LOL! Y'all have a great and stress-free day and I'll try to make it back for lunch!

He had a birthday last month so I guess he would have been about 35 in this episode." Sean said, "How do you know all that? It's like he is your brother or something...like a member of your family! It's weird." Haha I guess we do seem pretty weird to some people. Welcome to the porch..we welcome lunacy!

June 07, 2011 - Msg 84333: Good afternoon porch, passing through and wanted to welcome Benny to the porch. Another hot day on my end of the porch as well.

I too, am looking forward to some good ole home grown tomatoes. I love "mater" sandwhiches! I have many memories when I was growing up, going to the garden before supper and picking a fresh tomato, cucumber, lettuce and having them ready for the supper table. We would dig new potatoes, pick green beans, fresh corn and have a home grown supper. He even had apple trees so we would have those good ole homemade fried apple pies for dessert. We didn't even need much store food! My Dad loved to garden and would plant lots of different vegetables. One year, he tried to grown peanuts! didn't work out to well, guess it was the soil. He also kept honey bees for a couple years and would "rob" the bees for their fresh honey. That was probably in the late 1960's. He died in 1970 from cancer. Talking about gardening sure made me think of him and stirred up some great memories.

Better get back to work. Afternoon snack will be
moon pies, a bottle of pop.

Prayers and blessings to all.

June 07, 2011 - Msg 84337: I can only imagine what ASA thought "Moon pies" were.

Maude, my mom used to make us tomato, Velveeta and Miracle Whip sandwiches in the summer. I luv 'em!

Been busy today getting ready for my garage sale, going through boxes in the attic, doing laundry...chasing goats and a donkey back into the fence! Someone left the gate open and luckily, Erin spotted the critters on the lawn before any of them got to my flowers and MATERS! I had to bribe them back through the gate grapes and oranges but I had to lure Thelma Lou back with dog food.

I am trying a new recipe right now that I though might be interesting. Its really an old recipe for candied orange peel. We have been eating alot of navel oranges so i thought i would try to candy the peel and see how that turned out. They are simmering in sugar syrup as we speak. If they are any good, i will bring some out to the porch later this evening...probably go good with moon pies and Dr. Pepper...or Lemon Phosphate. I never heard of no Cherwine...what in the heck?!

Forgot to tell you a mayberry moment from yesterday. We had Mom-in-law over for supper and while we were sitting at the table, Erin took her napkin and tucked it into her shirt, then took her spoon and removed it as I heard her say, "I don't spill on my shirt, I spill on my pants!"...she was quoting Briscoe Darlin' in the episode "Briscoe Declares for Aunt Bee"! Then I heard her say, "I ain't about to be beat to death with no spoon!". Hearing her quote TAGS like that kind gits me right 'chere (pointing to my heart). sniff.

June 07, 2011 - Msg 84342: Howdy, porch. Tom, those are sweet sentiments you expressed, and I think everyone would agree. Benny, welcome to the porch. We haven't solved any of the world's problems yet, but we keep trying. At least we keep our little corner of it clean and safe. Goober-Fife, I think I welcomed you, but with my leaky memory, I can't be sure, so consider yourself welcomed. As for you, Interloper, is that a name you've chosen because you plan to stay around, or are you just funnin' with us? If you are planning to join us, you're most welcome, and your name is cool. We can always make room for one more. This is a biiiig old porch!

I'm with Boo. What is Cherwine? Never heard of it on the Texas end of the porch, but it sounds good.

Oh, woe is me!! Just got a call from my friend Ted, who does the maintenance and repair work for me, and has been a friend for years. He came and checked out my roof after that awful hail storm we had, and I've got some damage. Possibly repairable, more likely needs to be replaced. The worst part though, is the rent houses. Both of them are severely damaged, and most definitely will have to be replaced. One is so bad that Ted is going back in the morning to put a tarp over part of it until it can be replaced. He said if it rained very hard, there would be water damage to the interior of the house! Sooo - that's three houses, with pretty old roofs, that I'm going to have to replace. Heaven help me, I'm going to be working until I'm a hundred and ten. Yes, I have insur@nce, but I also have deductibles, and as I said, the roofs are all pretty old, so there will be huge depreciation. I don't know what this is going to cost, but honeys and dears, it ain't gonna be cheap! Oh mercy! I guess I'll call my friend at State Farm in the morning.

It's HOT here on my porch! 97 in the shade. I went out to tend the pond, and was just dripping wet when I came in, and no, I didn't fall in. I was just sweating. I zipped right past perspiring, and went straight to sweating. It's hot out there, and it's only early June. Heaven help us in July and August. The birds are already walking around with their beaks open and their wings held out, poor things. I turned on a sprinkler zone for them, and they're just having a party in the spray. Too cute!

Well, I think a plate of sliced 'maters, and some fresh fruit will be supper. I have some Brussels sprouts, maybe I'll steam them, let them cool and put a little vinegar/pepper sauce on them and eat them along with the 'maters. I love the little green things! Blessings, porch. --Romeena

June 07, 2011 - Msg 84344: Y'all have a great night! Sorry I couldnt stay long today, but just finished some work and dealing with the idiot electric company having a hitch in their system and shutting us off before we could make our scheduled payment. It got a might thick in the house before they came back. The outside isnt the only thing hot right now, I'll tell ya' what! But air is back on and all is getting well. I'll try to be more company tomorrow.

Sleep good and cool! Blessings all!

June 07, 2011 - Msg 84345: Oh Romeena, Honey! I feel your pain. Those deductibles can really eat your lunch. Prayers that things work out and end up costing you less than you anticipate. It worked out that way with us.

Goober-Fife......

June 07, 2011 - Msg 84347: Ro, I have often thought of your DIL, Brittney, in the last couple years, ever since she was going thru her melanoma ordeal. When you first posted about her (was it 2 years ago?) my daughter happened to be going thru a similar thing, although not as serious. My daughter is a fair-skinned, strawberry blonde, who does have a history of tanning-beds in her late teens. Anyway, she visits a dermatologist regularly in the last 3 or so years, and has had to have 3 suspicious moles removed. Thank God she has a doctor that keeps up on things, and also that nothing has turned out to be cancerous, but she is aware that she has to watch out for any new suspicious moles, because, according to her doc 1 of them could very well have become cancerous, if it had not been removed in time. Prayers for Brittney!
Boo and Ro, it seems so odd to me to hear you talk about fresh tomatoes, in June. I am so used to the Idaho seasons (and I'm sure Asa is the same way in Utah). We have the 4 seasons. We wouldn't dream of planting tomatoes, or most of our other crops, until at least the third week in May. And that depends on the weather that year. It's not uncommon to still get a hard frost in late May, or, like in Asa's area, SNOW. So we don't actually get our fresh, vine-rippened tomatoes until August, if we're lucky. Usually September is when I've got lots of them, enough to put up salsa. If we get an "Indian Summer" as we call it, we can sometimes still harvest stuff clear to Halloween, but that's uncommon. Our first snow in our area is usually around Thanksgiving time, so by the end of October it's time to get the garden area cleaned up and ready for winter. I had a friend that lived here all her life, and moved to San Antonio a few years ago, for a job. She has since moved back, but during that 2 years she stayed there, it was fascinating to hear her describe all the things that grow year-round there! Flowers and such-like, she was just amazed.
I also extend a welcome to anybody that's new; I'm not very good about remembering who started posting when, and I don't get on here every day, so I often don't keep up with new posters. (that's why they don't have me on the "welcoming committee")
