May 19, 2011 - Msg 84060: That's an excellent suggestion, Hazel. I would have used that. However, I'd be forever explaining it, because no one outside of TAGS fans, and probably not even very many of them, would get it, and I'd have to explain. Everyone will understand "Pelosi." As for it being a political statement, I'm not sure I would call it that. I just don't like HER, period. I think I'd feel the same if she was a dyed-in-the-wool Republican. But you could be right. Maybe I should just forget about it and call it "Scarecrow". Or "ScareEgret". I just hope I'm at this window when that hateful bird comes in, and I hope I get to see the Scarecrow, or Pelosi, or Izzy when he blows that bird's tail feathers clean up over his head! He should at least go fish in the nearby river, where his prey has a fighting chance. My poor little fish are so defenseless! Hateful bird.

About the porch album, friends - I'm having trouble finding a suitable site to build a new one. I did order the CD from the old site, so all our pictures will be saved on that. I had a notice from them that the demand exceeded their expectations, so it may be a few weeks before the CD arrives. I know everyone voted to keep an album somewhere, and I'm willing to do it, but I just haven't found a site that appeals to me. Does anyone have a suggestion? Have any of you worked with any online picture-storing sites? I'd welcome suggestions.

Well, I think I'm going to put my sneezing, coughing, aching, runny-nosed, fat little body in the bed and get a good night's sleep. I'm losing twelve hours out of my "paid time off" account tonight, by staying home. It needs to count for something. Throat is sore too, but not as sore as I expected it to be by now. Maybe this will be a light case. Blessings! --Romeena

May 19, 2011 - Msg 84065: Good morning, All!

I am a little late to the rocker today. Had to get some emails out posthaste!

Ro - That's a scream! "Pelosi"...LOL! Hazel was fast on the draw with that one.

GOOBER - Cracker Barrel is the best, isnt it? There are few places that can make you feel all country-fied (Silver Dollar City, Bass Pro Shops, etc.)and that's one of them! Sounds like a great time! Hopefully, no one got blackballed!

Boo - I have been having a dilly of a pickle with allregies! My nose has been runnin' more than an Olympic sprinter and I get so stuffed. I have always had bad allergies and sometimes they are completely non existant and other times, I feel like my face is stuffed like a Thanksgiving turkey. I sympathize with you and Ro. *AHHHCHOOO*
LOL!

Well, today is somewhat special. It is May 19 and in exactly one year, the Gentry Library and I will be opening the Quantrill collection starting with the ceremony at Noon. Lots to be done and one year to do it. A year can feel like a long time, but then it happens so fast! Just "Whoosh" and it was gone! LOL!

Have a great day, everyone. Shouts to REV (hope you enjoyed the grape slushy), TOM, Maude, SPOT, Asa, Rafe, Hazel, and the whole bunch of ya! Hope to see y'all a little later on!

May 19, 2011 - Msg 84070: Good early afternoon, porch. Don't anyone get too close, I'm a walking germ farm. Coughing, sneezing, nose running like a river - ugh! Low-grade fever, just enough to make my joints ache. I feel so sorry for myself!!

Thank you, Hazel. Very gracious - as always.

Just heard from my Michigan in-laws, Dale's brother to be specific. His grandson, Zack, is a baseball player for his high school. He was offered scholarships from several schools, and chose Oklahoma. That pleased me, because it puts him in driving distance from me, and maybe I can lure him down here with a home-cooked Texas meal now and then, not to mention that his parents will be visiting more often. I love his parents, they're wonderful people. Well, now it seems that there's a possibility that some major league team will be calling him, quite possibly the Texas Rangers! Now just how cool is that!! The Rangers scout has been at some of his games, and his parents had dinner with Nolan Ryan a while back. I am so excited! IF a major league calls him, and IF it's the Rangers, and IF they like how he performs during his "farm team" trials, and IF they call him up to the actual Rangers, that would just be so exciting. I know, that's a lot of "IF'in" but it could happen. It's got to start somewhere, and a scout visiting his games is a start. Here's the link: http://www.wwmt.com/video/?videoId=940305670001&lineupId=1155191568&play=now. I sure hope it all works out.

David's little boy, Landry, would just be in seventh heaven if he had a cousin playing for the Rangers! His feet would never touch the ground, and we would definitely have to go to every game. Landry's a good little ball player himself, at just ten years old, and Zack would be a perfect "hero" for him.

Well, I feel just terrible, think I'll go lie down for a while. Who would think a plain old cold could make you feel so bad? There's a ton of work that needs to be done in the yard, and I just plain don't feel like doing it. Eddie has been here, mowed and edged, so it looks good, but I know where the dead-heading and pruning and some light weeding needs to be done. Not today, though. Not today. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

RO- that is very cool! I have been a baseball fan for a long time. In fact, on the other end of the spectrum, one of my baseball "idols" of the 1960s just passed away here in Phx, Harmon Killebrew.
I was born in Mpls, and so was a big Twins fan during the 60s, since we had no team here at that time. He was a great player, and role model. His motto came from his mother (gotta love moms), "we are here to help people." And he DID! Very involved in this area for many years. May he Rest in peace.
Oh the answer to my question:"Bernard University." I wonder if the prop dept. did that for Barney? I still see things in eps that i never noticed before.

Good to see you Lucy. Hope your leg heals quick.

Boo, glad you thought of me when you bought your corn. I just planted some last weekend, between rain storms. But it's been so cool and wet here, I fear it may not do much growing. Corn likes it warm, and we just ain't got that right now.

Mornin' Asa...sorry your corn isn't doing well so far. Now THAT's a dissapointment! ha

Well, it is finally Friday. Its been a busy week around here but tomorrow is our trip out of town for the reunion and that should be fun. I hope dad doesn't back out at the last minute. He has just not been doing very well. He is getting weaker and his mind is going. I really want him to see some of his family while he still can travel some. Yesterday I took him to a fancy spa to get "fixed up". For months he wouldn't let anyone cut his hair and his beard was long. He looked like one of those old guys that live in a cabin all winter and come out looking like a hermit. His stringy hair was about 4 inches below the collar and he was scruffy looking, let me tell you! Well a few weeks ago he finally decided he wanted to get cleaned up for the runion and I jumped at the chance. I called and set him up for a haircut and a facial and took him yesterday. You should have seen the faces when I walked in the door of that place with him. There stood four lovely, well-dressed ladies who worked there and I know they had to try hard to hide their initial shock when he walked in. They were very kind to him, though, and cut his hair, trimmed his beard and all the other ear hair, brows and so on that grow so crazy on old men. When they finished he looked at least 10 years younger. They did an excellant job on him. I was in the waiting room talking to a friend that came in and when I saw Dad after they finished with him, I thought I was going to cry. I had to brush away a tear. He just looked so much younger..and like the dad I used to remember from his earlier days when he was judge and mayor of our small town. In those days he was always perfectly groomed and never went out without cologne. He was a sight back then and a ladies' man for sure. After the haircut, they took him to a small, dark room where they were playing soothing music and a very sweet young girl gave him a facial and exfolliated his skin. After that, she took some scented oil and very gently messaged his old, achey hands and arms. It was just such a blessing to see them treating dad that way. It was very touching to watch this young woman very gently rubbing my dad's old arms and for some reason it made me think of when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, and again, I wanted to cry. Oh, please pray for my father. He is so lost right now and has no hope of heaven to look forward to. He just doesn't believe that way.

Have to get Erin to work. Thanks for the listening ear.

Love,
Boo

REV - Ok, deal...just gotta put some string in the ol' weedeater and we'll be good to go!

SPOT - Gimme the eggs with some bacon(crisp), toast with jelly, hasbrowns and some OJ. Mmm. Mighty good, SPOT....mighty good.

Asa - Is that sweet corn?

Boo - I'm so sorry about the views of your father. I know that must weigh on you heavily. I am still coming to grips with a friend of mine that died in December from diabetes and he had turned his back on God. He was very frustrated with life and kinda took on the "If there is a God, why....etc.,etc." and basically turned his views to the spirit of man, not God. So I get an understanding of what you are feeling. My prayers for both your father and you as well. With the way you ended the entry above, I can tell your emotions were right at the surface when you posted. Try and have a good day.

May 20, 2011 - Msg 84085: Good morning, porch! Boo, your dad will definitely be a topic of prayer for me, and I'm sure for everyone on the porch. That is just so sad. Just where is he in his beliefs? Does he even believe in God? Lots of people believe in God, but it ends there. There is no faith in Jesus as Savior. If he doesn't believe in God at all, a total atheist, then the problem is huge. If he has some belief in God, you at least have a starting point. "If you were to die tomorrow, where would you go? Can you give me any reason why God should admit you to His heaven?"

Asa, it's not my grandson who is hoping for a call from the majors. It's my grand-nephew, my husband's brother's grandson. His name is Zack, and he's a good kid. I do have some ball-playing grandsons, but they're still little guys. The older one shows some promise, but at ten years old, who can tell?

It's cloudy, gray, looks like rain around here, but it looked that way yesterday too, and we didn't get a drop. Wonder if we will today? I've got to go clean the pond filter. The algae is really proliferating, the UV light is killing it, and that leaves dead, free-floating algae in the water, which the filter traps. The water is clear, but clouds up quickly without the filter. I added a flocculant, a chemical that causes the tiny algae particle to clump together, making them easier to filter out. It helps a lot, but the filter clogs daily. I do hope those pretty little fish appreciate the trouble and expense and work I go to in order for them to have a nice home. Whether they do or not, I am fully repaid every time I walk out there and see the lovely little things darting about in the water. So pretty.

Well, guess I'd better go. I've sneezed and coughed until my ribs feel like they're broken, and have gone through a whole box of tissues, starting on the second one. You just can't imagine how sorry I feel for myself! I'll be glad when this cold finally wears itself out. Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

Hey to MDC, Rafe, Goober-Fife, Maude, Lucy, SPOT, Rev, Asa, Possum, Hazel, auh2o and everyone else! have a great weekend, be safe and happy and I'll see you Monday!

John Masters

May 20, 2011 - Msg 84087: Thank you for your kind words and prayers. You are such sweet friends.

Ro, Dad doesn't believe in a God that is personally involved with man. He has some sort of idea of a "cosmic energy in the universe" or something. He doesn't believe in heaven or h#ll and so many of us have tried and still try to talk to him about it. Mostly we just love him and try to be an example to him of God's love. I certainly haven't given up hope that he will come around, but in the final analysis, we all have a choice.

Well, its been a long time, but guess what happened to me today? When I went outside this morning, there in my garage, sat a baby mockingbird. He couldn't fly and was just there alone. He had some feathers but still had to gray down on his head and parts of his body. He didn't appear to be injured and I have no idea why he was in there. I took him out to see if he would fly but he is just too young. So, I put him in a nice box and called the bird refuge near here. It's part of the marine biology branch of A&M and they take wild birds and care for them until they are ready to be released. This bird was CUTE! Everytime I peeked into his box, he thought I was mama coming to feed him and he would cheep, stretch out his neck and open his very big mouth! He really wanted his breakfast! Sean and I took him over to the refuge and we got to watch the attendant feed him breakfast with a syringe, and let me tell you he had no trouble eating it. So, guess he will be a fat and happy little bird.

Wish that was the end of the wild animal story, but alas, it is not. As I was bringing Erin home from school today, we witnessed a little squirrel that had been hit by a car and was kind of wandering around beside the road with at least a broken leg, and in shock. Of course I had to get a towel and get him. He is presently in a cage in the barn getting ready to expire. I called a lady who takes injured squirrels just in case he doesn't expire soon. She hasn't called me back, though. At least the little thing can die in peace instead of wandering back onto the road to be hit again or worse.

Well, better go get started on dinner.

Boo

May 20, 2011 - Msg 84088: What a day. Bruce ended up putting the poor squirrel out of its misery. Why is it so hard to see little creatures like that suffer? I wish I was tougher sometimes. You'd think by now I would have gotten thicker skin and to top it off, I got a call from one of my best friends in high school. Rusty was a little younger than me but we were just buddies and he was a sweet kid and smart, talented musically, but Rusty was an abused child and had some very sad struggles in a very dysfunctional family. He had a hard time making friends and was not treated well in school or at home, but being the sucker for anything that is suffering (duh), I became his friend. He called today and needed someone to talk to because his niece killed herself 2 weeks ago. She only 23. It was my first real conversation with Rusty since I was just out of college and I told me he is living alone and has AIDS. He is disabled and is suffering. He told me he doesn't have any friends. It just killed me to hear it. I will be praying for him, you can be sure. I think I will go to prayer meeting tonight and have a good cry!

I never did get dinner started and that was over an hour ago...better get going!

Boo

May 20, 2011 - Msg 84092: Oh my goodness, Boo. I'm so sorry to hear about your friend, Rusty. Doesn't sound like there's much you can do to help him, except to be a sounding board and just listen to him. What a tragic story. One other thing you can do, and it's perhaps the most important thing of all, is to find out whether he knows the Lord, and if not, introduce him! I'm so sorry to learn of your dad's "way out" beliefs. He's not alone. There are so many who believe the same way. They seem to acknowledge that there is a higher power of some sort, but they have no idea who or what that power may be, and don't want to know. I think you're doing all you can do - just live a life before him that exemplifies God's love. You can't talk to him much about it, because that will only make him dig in and resist all the more. It's a problem, for sure.

Good for you for rescuing the little bird, and for at least trying to help the little squirrel. Poor little thing. Squirrels are hard to rescue, because they're so high-strung, and will often just die of fright when captured or injured. There are so many of them around here, it's not uncommon to see one dead in the street. It hurts me every time I see one, and I always ask God to teach them to stay out of the streets, but still they come. REV references being careful of the little wild ones in one of his songs, and it's a favorite of mine.

We've had a very light, slow drizzle going on for the last hour or two, and there's a squirrel lying on top of one of the nest boxes, his tail up over his head like an umbrella. He actually appears to be napping. I don't know why he doesn't go in the box - maybe there's another one in there who won't let him in. There are wars over real estate back there all the time. Ted is supposed to be making me a fourth box, to take a little of the pressure off in the competition for space. He's been pretty busy, and I suppose I can't blame him if he gives preference to someone who has a leaky roof, over my squirrels!

Well, guess I'll try to rustle up some grub. Spot, could somebody bring me a slice of pizza and a couple of those wings? Just leave 'em on the porch and ring the bell. I don't want anybody to get close enough to catch this miserable cold. I think I feel a teensy bit better right now. Maybe a good night's sleep and a little more time, and I'll feel better in the morning. I sure hope so. I'm really tired of this. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

May 20, 2011 - Msg 84093: Me again. I wish every one of you could be at this window with me, and see what I'm seeing. The weather is very strange, it's like the world is holding its breath. The air is completely still, not a leaf is moving. The only movement in the back yard is the flow of the fountains in the pond, and the occasional squirrel nose that appears at the door of one of the boxes. The temperature is only 70 degrees, and the air is damp. The strange thing though, besides the utter stillness, is the light. The sky is a murky yellow color, due no doubt to sundown on the heavy cloud cover. The effect on the ground is a green/gold glow, as though the light was coming from the earth. I suppose a large bed of yellow pansies helps that a bit (they have never looked so yellow) but the effect is eerie. Each leaf, each blade of grass, each sword of iris foliage is standing out in clear relief. I'd love to walk out there and be a part of that glowing scene, but I have the impression that a lightning bolt could be poised to strike. I saw the flash of one, miles away, just now. Something is going to happen, I'm just not sure what. It's beautiful, and a little scary at the same time.

Now a very light breeze has riffled through, making the softer, smaller limbs on the trees move and sway. The yellow glow is fading a little, switching to a duller gray, but there's still that sense of anticipation, a little bit of apprehension, a little fear of the unknown. I know if I was a squirrel, I'd be deep in a hidey-hole about now.

As for me, I think I'm going to move away from this 8-ft wide window. It's tempered glass, but still....

May 20, 2011 - Msg 84095: Thanks, Ro. I certainly appreciate prayers on dad's behalf. As far as Rusty is concerned, we talked of faith back in high school and he was a believer. We talked about it some again today and he says that he believes in God and that Jesus is his savior, but he also believes there are different paths to God, etc. Anyway, I expect to talk more about it.

Yes, it was very sad about the squirrel...poor thing. I think he was a squirrel who had been in some fights in his time, too. I noticed a little chunck out of one of his ears that was well-healed, and his tail looked like it had been in a few fights, but those lovely, big eyes! So sweet. I am very glad he is no longer suffering. Bruce burried him (deep to keep the dogs from digging him up!) and Erin put a little cross on his grave that she made of popsicle sticks. :) Kids are so cute that way.

Better get to bed. I am feeling really bushed tonight.

Hope your cold is much better tomorrow, Ro.

I have been keeping this cold at bay for days and last night I got stressed out about something and "boom," the cold wins. I remember when I was working as a nurse and sometimes I would have to be in charge for the shift (hated it)..almost everytime I would get so stressed that a fever blister would pop out on my lip! haha

Well, guess I will finish my tea with lemon and pack for the trip. Ya'll pray for a safe trip, please (Bruce is driving)!;)

May 21, 2011 - Msg 84098: Well, it finally happened. The bird came in and landed in the yard, while I was at my window. I remained very still and watched to see how Pelosi would handle him. Would you believe it? That evil, cunning bird crouched low, and very slowly edged toward the pond, ducking behind a stand of iris foliage. He wasn't hiding from the device, he was sneaking up on the fish! He nearly made it work, too! He was low enough, and moving slowly enough, that he didn't set Pelosi off. I could stand it no longer and stood up near the window, waving my arms and shouting murderous threats at him. He just casually flapped away over the rooftops, while Toye Starr ran from the room as if I'd lost my mind. All of this did confirm one thing in my mind, though. I've thought all along that he fishes from the bridge, and that is definitely where he was headed. So, I'll replace the multiple layers of netting on the bridge, which I'm told the birds don't like to walk on. I may devise a way to extend a layer of that netting about a foot out from the bridge on each side. I can do that and still leave myself access to the filters. If I can keep him off the bridge, he'll have to come to the lower end of the pond, in which case he'll be about three feet from Pelosi and should get a burst of water right up his backside! I also increased the sensitivity on the device. If I set it at maximum, it fires every time a leaf moves or a sparrow lands. I've got to find the right setting. Miserable devil bird!

Boo, I'm sorry you've got a cold too. I think I'm feeling a bit better, though I do think I'll stay home from church in the morning. What with close seating, and hand-shaking and such, I could hardly avoid passing it on, and I don't want to do that. Someone gave it to me, and though I know it wasn't intentional, still when I was feeling the worst, I was wishing the fleas of a thousand camels would infest their armpits, and I don't want anyone wishing that on me.

Guess I'll go scratch up something to eat. There's nothing very interesting around here, and I don't feel like driving anywhere for some takeout. Guess I could order a pizza, but I can't eat a whole pizza, and there's no one to share it with. Wish I had some more P.F. Chang's Chinese food in the freezer, but it's all gone. That stuff's pretty good, by the way. Oh well, I'll find something. Blessings, all. --Romeena

May 22, 2011 - Msg 84104: Good Sabbath, porch friends, hope al is well today.
Been to church and now home for an afternoon of rest and relaxin'.

I haven't had the chance to welcome Goober-Fife to the porch. We are glad to have you. Big Maude here, I live in Northeast Tenn and generally am an assitant cook here on the porch. In addition to my most excellent SLAW, I am an excellent dancer an have some alter egos (Mrs. Poltice, who gives voice lessons and Ralph Henderson). I've been coming to the porch for several years now and consider these folks like family.

Supposed to be record high temps today, about 89 degrees. Pretty warm for this time of year on my end of the porch.

Guess, I will take care of feeding us today: grilled BBQ chicken and ribs, SLAW, baked potatoes with butter and sour cream, baked beans,
homemade rolls. homemade ice cream with brownies.
sweet tea, lemoande to drink. come early and visit for a while. No reason to be in a hurry.

Everyone have a blessed day.

May 22, 2011 - Msg 84106: Well, it appears that good ol' Harold Camping got it wrong - yet again. If Jesus returned today, I somehow missed it. How about you? This deluded elderly gentleman has predicted the date of the Second Coming several times, obviously wrong every time. And today, he was proven wrong again. That he continues to try is amazing enough, but even more amazing to me is that people actually believe him, stop making their mortgage payments, quit their jobs, euthanize their pets, and sit down to wait for the event to occur. Don't they read their Bibles? “But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come.” — Mark 13:32
How does this man dare to think that he can, by his calculations, determine the date when Christ will return, when not even Christ Himself knows? That's pretty bold, if you ask me. Oh, I think he's sincere. I don't think he intends harm to anyone, and he apparently doesn't stand to gain anything by this. In fact, he has spent huge sums of money to spread his warnings. Too bad he didn't spend it to spread the Word. Sad.

Just had an email from my nephew, who says several baseball teams are apparently tracking his son for the draft which apparently takes place June 6-8. They're really hoping that he'll be chosen, and if he is, that it's the Rangers who call him. I'm hoping so, too! Wouldn't that be fun? We're really praying for the best outcome. There are a lot of good players, and not many available draft slots, so here's hoping....

Big Maude, that meal sounds wonderful! Can you pack a basket and send it up to the hospital? I'll be working this evening and tonight. That meal sure would hit the spot about 2 a.m. Nothing open at the hospital at that hour, and the machines don't offer much.

Well, guess I'll catch a little nap before I have to get up and get ready to go. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

May 22, 2011 - Msg 84108: Just got back into town and checking in....I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT BIRD DIDN'T GET BLASTED BY PELOSI!! Sure hope he gets it the next time.

Ro, you mentioned the Lord's return and Mark 13:32 and what is really interesting about that passage is that Jesus was speaking directly to his disciples. It wasn't a general message to a crowd. Even though he knew that they would go on to become great men of faith and spread the gospel to the known world, he still told THEM to watch and be alert and not to be asleep when He returned. It sure seems to me that the intended message here is that God wants us to always be aware that it could happen anytime and we should keep ourselves ready and looking for his appearing. If Jesus had given as a certain date, I wonder how many people would just put off being saved thinking they would still have time to just make it before the Lord returned?

Well, we had a nice little trip away from home. Saw some lovely old farms and farmhouses, green pastures with grazing cattle, small historic towns. Enjoyed it but never sleep well in hotel rooms..I missed my own bed but it was only one night. Did eat some good food but being on a diet, I was careful not to over do it. I always feel so much better if I don't eat a big meal. I have metabolic syndrome so I produce more than my share of insulin and when I eat a big meal with alot of carbs, I feel horrible an hour later. I try to keep my blood sugar on an even level throughout the day and I feel so much better and have more energy. I do that by eating small meals several times a day, rather than three big meals.

Ro, my cold seems to have turned into a sinus infection and I am not feeling so good (much worse than when I had the actual cold) so I guess I will be calling the doctor tomorrow. Better go...mother-in-law is supposed to come for a visit. Wanted to just rest but you know how that goes. Some folks you can be honest with and some, not so much.

See you all later.

May 22, 2011 - Msg 84109: Good Sabbath evening porch. Thought I'd pop in and say hey. Been busier then a cows tail in fly season. But I always stop it for the Sabbath.
Sorry Ro. I know you said Grand Nephew but for some reason my fingers didn't listen.

Hey Goober Fife. Welcome to this corner of Mayberry. Good folks here. Hope you stick around.

Boo, I was reading your post about your Dad and it brought tears to my eyes. I can't imagine what it is doing to you. I guess all you can do is pray and be an example to him, and hopefully something will cause him to reflect on things. I will certainly keep him and your friend Rusty in my prayers. I hope you get feeling better too.

I have a question for you who are cooks. I am not. I don't even play one on tv. But with my wife's condition I am having to take on that roll more and more. Here's my issue. On the weekends I will hard boil 5 eggs so I can take one to work each day. Why is it that 1 or 2 of the 5 eggs are so dang blamed hard to peel? The others peel just fine but there is always one or two that want to fight me. By the time I have them peeled, the only thing left is the yolk. Can someone help me?

May 22, 2011 - Msg 84111: Thanks, Asa. (((((HUG))))) Now, about those hard boiled eggs, Sweat Pea... the secret to eggs that are easy to peel is to use the older ones. I know that sounds kind of awful, but the ones nearest their expiration date are the easiest to peel. The fresher the egg, the harder to peel.

Boo

May 22, 2011 - Msg 84112: Sorry about calling you "Sweet Pea" Asa..I was just touched by your post and thinking of you having to cook more for your wife. I wish I could do something to help. I can pray for you and for your dear wife, and I will. :)

May 23, 2011 - Msg 84113: Hi - it's me, reporting in from work. Got a patient coming over from L&D shortly, but I have a minute or two. Asa, Boo is right about the older eggs peeling the easiest. Another tip is to run cold water over them as soon as you take them off the heat. Pour off the hot water and run cold water over them. That seems to help. However, there are always some that, as you put it, want to fight. That says it about as well as anything I've ever heard. Bless you, my dear fcriend.

Got to run - here comes a wheelchair. --Romeena

May 23, 2011 - Msg 84114: Morning Porch. Boy these monday morning get here way yonder to fast some times.

Well thanks Boo and Ro for your cooking help. I had heard somewhere about the freshness of the eggs being a reason but for some reason I figured it was just the opposite, that the fresh egg would be the easy peeler. I get them all from the same carton so who ever sells them to the store or at the store is the culprit. lol Thanks again for your help, and for your prayers. I love to watch cooking shows on tv, but feel as out of place in a kitchen as a nun in a house of ill repute! The first time I tried baking a potato in the microwave... BLEWIE! I didn't know you had to poke holes in them before hand. What a mess.
And no worries about the "sweet pea" handle Boo. I like it. :)

Well the Rapture didn't happen. I wasn't expecting it to, but as Romeena said, it was sad to see how so many thought it would and went to such extremes. I agree with Ro, hte Gentleman who was predicting all this I think is sincere, just misguided. Scripture seems to be pretty clear on the point that no man knoweth the hour, not even the Angels. And I think you are correct Boo. Part of the reason for that is so that we are always ready for his return, not waiting for the last minute to get our act together. Kind of like the episode when Aunt Bee goes to help out with the relative with the versitis. Andy and Opie are pigs, and the house is a mess, when Aunt Bee calls and tells them she'll be home sooner than expected. Andy and Opie scurry around like mad trying to get w weeks worth of pig living cleaned up in a morning. I don't think thats what the Lord wants from us either, a last minute change of heart because his return is imminent. Well his return is imminent, we just don't know when, so we best be ready for that call, whenever it comes. But maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. Heck, I'm not even sure I spelled imminent correct. Just something to think about though. Sermon over. :)

Better quit preachin' and get to workin'.
Prayers for all.

Asa

May 23, 2011 - Msg 84115: Asa, you're trying to be modest, but you know perfectly daggone well that you're right in what you said. And you did spell imminent correctly. --Romeena

May 23, 2011 - Msg 84116: Good morning, Porch family

Well, show of hands here...who is tired and about had it with this bull?!

I had some rather intense moments yesterday....

My FIL goes fishing at the Confederate Home Park I have told you all about. It was around 3pm. As I am watching NHL Hockey, our news breaks in with weather.... they start warning the public about intense storms heading right to where my FIL is! My wife calls him and lets him know to find shelter NOW! He rides that storm out and is safe and ok in the end.
Meanwhile.....
Last night, as I watch the coverage of Joplin, Missouri's devastation, the Weather Channel starts talking about rotations and tornadic conditions head ing right for Benton County, Arkansas....where my mother and g'ma is. I had called her and she was busy getting my g'ma to a safe place in the house while sirens were ringing all over town. One tornado touched down west of them, but they made it ok with no tornados or damage.

By the way....I have a cousin that lives in Joplin....she was in Kansas City and her friends have told her that her apartment still stands firm.

Four people, no damage, no problems and for that I am thankful. But I do believe I have had enough of this bull!

May 23, 2011 - Msg 84117: Hey Asa, I liked that little lesson you taught using the example of the TAGS episode! Very true. :)

Been a busy morning already. Bruce's truck had to be put in the shop so I had to go get him early then we went to the grocery store. I think my cold is turned into a sinus infection and I wanted to get what I needed to make a batch of chicken soup (which is simmering on the stove as we speak). We have been eating healthy around here and this cold latched onto me! Anyway, I fixed myself a virgin "Bloody Mary" and thought of you all, of course, and had to come sit on the porch for a spell.

Bloody Mary is finished and my break is over..gotta go clean up my mess in the kitchen.

Oh, Asa, I tried a new recipe that is really easy to make and is good in the summer, especially at picnics because it doesn't use any mayo (Me-They would like it...remember his hatred of mayo? hehe). Let me give you the recipe in case you want to try and make it for the Mrs. sometime. Here are the ingredients:
Bag of coleslaw mix (you can find them in the produce section at the store)
1 cup of diced celery
1 chopped bell pepper
small bunch of green onions, chopped
1/2 cup of slivered almonds (easy to find...sold already sliced in little packages)
1/2 cup of dried cranberries
Bottle of Honey-Mustard dressing (I buy the WalMart value brand and it is real good...I only use about 1/2 a bottle in this recipe).
All you do is mix it all together and let it chill. I think its really good and pretty good for you, too if you don't drown it in the dressing. ;)

May 23, 2011 - Msg 84118: Forgot to mention that we have someone coming out from the farmer's coop to help us decide on planting some fruit trees and a garden. We have sandy soil here on our five acres and need some help in what to plant that will thrive here. I guess they will test the soil and see if we need to add anything to it. Our hope is to grow a little orchard on part of the land that we aren't really using and then as we get to the place that we have enough to sell, we might set up our own little roadside stand or start a little farmer's market since there isn't one nearby. We would also like to grow some pumpkins to sell in the fall...maybe have our own little pumpking patch out front for people to come and bring their kids and pick out a pumpkin. Anyway, we'll see. Pumpkins may not grow well in this soil.

I liked our pastor's comment yesterday, in trying to find some "good" in Camping's prediction, he mentioned how ALL the secular news outlets carried stories and that if nothing else, it made everyone aware that it WILL happen someday! amen to that! Unless you were an ant up a tree in outer mongolia, you knew about this thing! Just keep extra "oil for your lamp" around at all times! (:
