May 08, 2011 - Msg 83880: Good morning, and Happy Mother's Day to all you moms and substitute moms on the porch. I'm thinking of my sweet mom today - hard to believe she's now been in heaven for twelve years. Next Sunday, Dale will have been there for fifteen years. Time sure is funny. Sometimes it seems like it's been forever, other times it seems it was only yesterday when they left.

G'morning to you, Boo. Lucy's brother appeared in the ep "Stranger in Town", when Ed Sawyer decides that Mayberry is his home town, and everybody is scared of him because he just appears and starts talking to everyone like he has known them forever, but they don't know him.

Well, guess I'd better get moving, lest I end up getting to church late. It's 72 degrees here, very cloudy, skies like lead and a bit windy. Looks like we could get some rain. I just hope there's no hail in those clouds. My pet car will be sitting out on the church lot, unprotected. There was talk at one time about building a three-story parking garage for the church, because we had such a small parking lot, and were overflowing it big time. Then we were able to acquire a large parcel of land adjacent to the existing lot, for about what the garage would have cost to build, so that was the obvious choice. We've got more than enough parking space now, and then some. However, today I wish we had the covered parking! Oh well.

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

May 08, 2011 - Msg 83891: Busy day...finally getting around to saying Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers on the porch. Hope its been a good one for you.

Been kind of busy, but not too bad. I did get to sneak in a nap on the couch for a bit this afternoon. Went to spend some time with mom this evening and brought her some Bluebell Ice Cream (at her request). I don't know if all of you know what Bluebell Ice Cream is but here in Texas, people eat alot of it. It is made in a place called Brehnam here in Texas and the commercial used to say, "The reason Bluebell Ice Cream tastes so good, is because the cows think Brehnam is heaven." It is pretty good but I'm not really an ice cream person. Now pie, that's another thing!

Better get a shower and spend some time with Erin. She has been upset because she couldn't spend the night at St. Susan's house tonight because she has school tomorrow. In her 9 yr old mind, she just can't figure out why she just can't skip school tomorrow! ;)

May 09, 2011 - Msg 83892: Well, looks like I was the last one to bed and the first one up this morning.

It is a very warm and humid morning here in south texas..should be in the upper 80's today. Summer is certainly on the way. My Erin's last day of school in may 20th...when do your kids get out of school (if you still have kids in school...not many of us left anymore, i don't think).

There sure are alot of missing folks..hope they show up again. We never have heard from Sterling. Sure hope everything is ok with him and his family. Homemaker rarely makes an appearance but i do see her on facebook. I see Mavis, too, but she never comes here anymore for some reason..not sure why. I also miss Me-They on here. Wish they were all back but I understand they have their reasons or are too busy and I am very thankful for my friends who are still here and for the new friends that have joined us. Sure hope they stick around. Maybe a few more will stumble onto the porch and stay here. That is how I got here...just happened to come upon the site and venture onto the porch.

Well, better get on with the day. I slacked off on the chores since it was mother's day yesterday and now I have laundry to catch up and cleaning to do...grocery shopping...the usual Monday chores.

I'll check in on my coffee break.

May 09, 2011 - Msg 83897: Goooood morning, Everyone!

A belated Happy Mother's Day to all of the porch moms! I was wrapped up in calling my mom and g'ma and then going to the FIL's to celebrate with wife's g'ma. Nothing like throwing some hot dogs on the grill, letting them slow cook and taking in the breeze from the back patio all day! Then...sitting on same said patio and watching the night come in and not caring what time it is! I hope you all had a great Mother's Day and had a good time!

auh2o - I'm happy you like the site so much! I hope the whole porch family is liking it. Who is your relative that fought with the Conf.? Maybe I can help!

On Saturday, the wife, myself and the FIL went fishing at the Confederate Park in Higginsville, Mo. I kid you not, my wife caught a black bass, about 9 inches in length, in about 5 minutes. She used a long, fake pink worm with some smelly stuff smeared on it and BAM! Bite, hook and reel it in! FIL caught one with a beetle spinner and I caught zero. Nada. But...was nice being out in nature with cranes, storks, muskrats, squirrels and geese.

I finally got here for breakfast, I see. MMMMmmmm...I'll grab some eggs here.....scoop up some hash browns....coupla biscuits with jelly....and top it off with some choc. milk. Thanks, Maude! Oh, here's a copy of the USA Today. I'll leave it in my rocker.

Supposed to be about 90* on my end of the porch. Yikes...turn on the AC!

Turns out it really was invented by a man named Thomas Crapper and that's what the first toilets became known as.."crappers"..no fooling. They also talked about what things were like in England before the invention of plumbing and how there were men that went about town, who wore big black capes and carried a type of protable chamber pot on legs. For a fee, he stop in the streets, allow people to use his potty while he wrapped his big cape around them for privacy. Now how would you like to have his job?! Ew.

Hope you all have already had your lunch by the time you read this post.

May 09, 2011 - Msg 83907: Now wouldn't that be an honor to have a "poop stool" named after you. What would we do without them?

Asa

May 09, 2011 - Msg 83908: Right Asa...I think we should all observe a moment of silence in honor of Thomas Crapper.......

Boo

May 09, 2011 - Msg 83909: In his day, Mr. Crapper's name probably was fairly common and elicited no comment or interest. I can only hope that the family line has died out or been diluted with other names. Can you imagine the teasing and bullying a child bearing that name would suffer today? He'd better be big and mean, or he wouldn't survive, poor kid.

Asa, to answer your question above - I guess without them, we'd do what the Mongolians do - just disappear into the bushes now and then. They thought it was hilarious that we had our little "potty tent" at the campsite. They were discreet about it, but there was a lot of interest in the little tent at first, then politely veiled smiles when they found out what it was for. They never availed themselves of the facility, but as I said, just disappeared into the bushes every so often.

Have you seen the little solar-powered lights currently on sale at WalMart for about $3? Cute little things. They have several designs - some look like stained glass, and are quite pretty, but unfortunately they don't live up to their promise after dark. The light they give is so dim as to be pretty much hidden by the design. However, there is one style that's clear, with little ridges in the glass. When the light comes on at dusk, they cast a multi-faceted star pattern on the ground that's really very pretty. Of course, like all those solar-powered things, they don't so much cast a beam of light - they just sort of glow, but still they're pretty, and the price is right. I use a lot of low-voltage landscape lights, which do cast a directional beam of light, and can be very effective. However, the bloomin' little bulbs that go in them are about $5 each, and last anywhere from two weeks to two months, then burn out. I've got several out there right now that are dark, and they may just stay that way. I'm tired of buying those pricey little bulbs.

That miserable bird came into the yard again yesterday and started stalking the fish in the pond. I saw him, and scared him away, but I've got to find some other solution. There's a motion-activated device called "Scarecrow" that shoots a jet of water straight at the moving target, and it's not expensive. However, it requires a garden hose to power it, of course, and I'm not fond of the idea of a hose lying across the yard all the time. Also, it occurred to me that probably at least ten times a week I'd forget the thing, walk out to check the pond and get soaked! So, that idea is on the back burner for now. I'll risk the soaking if I can figure out a way to avoid the hose lying out all the time.

Well, I think I'll go put my feet up for a while and cuddle my little furkid - she's been in here asking for attention. Nothing spoiled about that puppy! REV, we should get her and Jake together, and have a "spoiled pup" competition. It would probably be a tie.

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

May 09, 2011 - Msg 83912: Just checking in to say good night to everyone. getting ready to hit the ole ironing board. been a long tough day for ole Maude.

I have a very difficult and complicated situation I am dealing with at work, so please pray that God will give me strength, the words, knowledge and most of all PATIENCE to deal with this particular situation.

And then then to add more aggravation to my day, I dropped my almost new crock pot and broke in into about 100 pieces. I was washing it ( after we had spaghetti for supper) and just as I finished rinsing it it slipped out of my hands and hit the sink and BAM it was history. I know it is only a crock pot but seems like it was just one of those days. Wish i had dropped it BEFORE I had it all cleaned out. :) But then that would of probably been a bigger mess.

Boo, I looked back in the archives and looks like my very first post was March 24, 2006. So that makes about 5 years I been around the porch with you fine people.

Rev, we are working on a plan to come to see you in Pigeon Forge on the 29th. Probably will just be my husband and me because the kids have other plans for that week end. Hopefully things will work out. I am looking to meeting you.

Ya'll sleep tight. Prayers all around.

May 10, 2011 - Msg 83916: Good evening, all. Just passing by on the way to my own ironing board. Something's kicking in, but it's not melatonin - I think it's called "fatigue."

I can't complain, though. I came home from work this morning, got a bank deposit together and made that little run - took Toye Starr along, because she always gets a "cookie" from Glenda, the drive-thru lady. Got that done, came back home, had a little breakfast and hit the sack. Slept about four hours and woke up feeling human again. Puttered around here a bit, cleaned the pond pump - looks like that's going to be a daily chore again this summer - then watched some TV (mostly "Matlock", I've gotten right fond of that show!) - and now I'm off to bed again. Dental appointment in the morning, then will take lunch to Eloise and stay a while, then home for a nap and back to work tomorrow night. Sounds boring, doesn't it?

Maude, I'm glad you joined us. You have been a real asset to the porch, and a good friend. I just wish some of our others would come home. Maybe they will someday.

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

You know, Matlock doesn't come on any of the stations that I get and it has been so long since I watched it on TBS years ago, that I don't remember if i liked it or not. I know I would enjoy watching Andy, bless his old heart. Hope he is still doing well.

Think I will try to go back to sleep for a bit before its time to get up to get Erin off to school. Won't be long and we will be able to sleep in for the summer...yay!

See ya all later.

May 10, 2011 - Msg 83920: Morning all. I had to laugh as I was doing my morning ritual, standing before the porcelin throne, thinking about the wide range of topics we cover here on the porch. HA! We cover it all. Thanks Boo. You're always good for a laugh.

Hey Maude, I will for sure add you and your situation to my prayer list. I hope all works out ok, whatever is going on.

I love Matlock. Boo, I know he's on the Hallmark channel every night for 2 hours. I have bought 6 seasons of it so far. That is all thats been released I believe. The only thing I don't care for about it is I end up craving a good hotdog most times. Old Ben loves his hotdogs, and makes them look dang good.

Have fun on your get away Rev. I hope you don't have a deputy keep interrupting you and the Mrs. while your gone.

Rafe, the rip roaring was done last night as we paid tribute to Thomas Crapper! Boo led in the rip roaring. :)

Well better get rolling. Still raining on my porch and snowing in the mountains. One ski resort reported 12 inches of new snow just yesterday. We are getting really worried because when it finally warms up here it's gonna do it quick and all that snow is gotta go somewhere.

Asa

May 10, 2011 - Msg 83921: A good morning to all!

A nice comfortable 78* on my end of the porch and it feels good to hunker down here in the ol' rocker!

Maude - So sorry to hear about your bad day. I sure feel for ya'. Days like that make you feel like when it rains, it pours. And you dont dare say "it cant get any worse" because you are inviting it. Best wishes for your work situation!

REV - Well, looks like you and the wife finally took that advice of taking it easy! Have a great vacation!

Ro - I think I would have to join in on that spoiled pup contest! Our little twosome are spoiled to the bone and rotten to the core! LOL! They're good little dogs, but we let them get away with way more than they should. They have a good life and want for nothing. The little buggers!

Well, folks...better skeedaddle. Y'all have a great morning and I'll see if I can mosey on back here for lunch!

John Masters

May 10, 2011 - Msg 83922: Goooood morning, porch! Boo, thanks for wishing me a good night's sleep - it worked. I'm sorry your sleep was broken, but I slept like the proverbial log. Of course, I was as stiff as that log when I woke, and getting up was hard, but a hot shower helped a lot. Now I'm all clean and shiny, hair is drying, and soon I'll be off to the dentist's office, then will take Eloise a Chick-Fil-A sandwich (she loves 'em!) and visit with her for a while. Then work tonight. Thank goodness I don't have any back-to back nights this week. One in a row is about all I can handle these days.

Asa, I'll be glad when the weather stabilizes around your porch. The flooding threat is very real, I know, when all that snow starts to melt at once. And if the ground is already soaked, that makes it even more dangerous.

John Masters, you've probably told us, but my memory is so holey and leaky, I don't remember. What kind are your dogs - any particular breed, or just a happy mixture? REV's little Jake is a Shih Tzu, and cute as a button. Toye Starr is a Maltese, on the smaller end of the size spectrum for her breed, at only 4 1/2 pounds. I'm the world's biggest hypocrite, I guess. I strongly advocate shelter rescue adoptions, yet I bought a "breed". My only justification for that is that I knew exactly what I wanted in terms of nature and personality, as well as tiny size. My previous companion was Sugarplum, a Maltese that my husband got for me in 1994, and she was a little angel in a puppydog suit. So when I lost her, (mercy, how I still miss that little girl!) I knew I really needed another Maltese. I checked the Maltese rescue sites, but there was nothing available in this end of the country at that time. So, I bit the bullet and bought a breeder's "pet quality" pup - never make a show dog, but who cares? As long as she had the Maltese nature, that's what I wanted, and boy, does she ever! There's just something about a Maltese....

Well, gotta run. Dental appointment awaits. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

May 10, 2011 - Msg 83923: You're welcom, Asa. Glad you thought of us while you were staring at the porcelain crapper this morning...(I think). ;)

So you're a dog spoiler, too, JM. I guess if I had small dogs in the house they would be spoiled, too. I have two big, rescued lug-heads that roam on our 5 acres. One is a black lab/shepherd mix (female) and one is a black and white lab/great dane mix (male). The male is scheduled for the "big fix" on Thursday. They are rough, outside dogs that love to hunt for anything that moves. They will spend hours chasing bugs, butterflies, the shadow of birds flying overhead and of course, trying to catch squirrels. They live like dogs and I guess they like it that way, although, they get hot during the day. Our male spends alot of time in the water trough, cooling off, but the female hates water. Any-hoo, break over.

Hope you have a great day and enjoy your time with Eloise, Ro.

Boo

May 10, 2011 - Msg 83924: Yeah, Boo...sometimes we take turns running the house. LOL!

Ro - We have two dachshunds, one mixed. The first is our male, Howie. He is a dachshund through and through. The second is our female, Lillie. She is a mix of dachshund and Rodesian ridgeback. She is the sweetest and happiest little dog, but when she bares the teeth....look out!

One of their most all time, most favorite treats?..... Ice. I kid you not. They will run back and forth from kitchen to living room together and snort and bark and I'll just ignore them playfully. Then, I'll look at them both and say loudly "ICE?!" And they about tear the carpet up trying to get into the kitchen fast enough! LOL! It's a riot!

My breaks over too, Boo. I'm a goner.

May 10, 2011 - Msg 83931: I'm back. Had a nice visit with Eloise and her "sitter" - a very nice gal, named Michelle. She went to grocery store after lunch, since I was there to stay with Eloise. You know what, those chicken sandwiches from Chick-Fil-A are really good!

Dental appointment went well - just a cleaning and annual x-rays, but did find out that one molar needs a crown. It was filled many years ago, the old filling is breaking down, and he says it now will require a crown. Yuck. I have dental insur@nce, but it doesn't pay all of it - my share will be over $600. Double yuck. I really can't complain, though. I've been going to this dentist for 32 years, and at nearly 72, I've got a full set of teeth, all mine and attached. They may be filled or crowned in some cases, but they're still there.

My, the trees are nice and full today. The hawk must have moved on, because there are at least twenty birds in sight out there at any given moment. All kinds, right down to a tiny finch that's no bigger than my thumb. Cute little thing. A pair of doves have settled into the grass near a boulder, and are just sitting there side by side, occasionally touching each other with their bills. Some sort of bonding process, I suppose, but it surely is sweet. The sprinklers ran last night, so the soil is damp, and robins are everywhere, searching for worms, and apparently finding them. A sassy little squirrel is just bounding around, evidently for the sheer joy of it, since there doesn't seem to be any other purpose to his activity. Just now, a mob (can't think of any better word to describe them) of sparrows converged on the big ligustrum bush and just disappeared into it. There must have been fifty of them, and now I can't see a single one. Wonder what that's all about? It's such fun to sit here and just be still and watch all the traffic out there. Oh, here comes the mob - now they're all in the birdbath! There won't be a drop of water left at the rate they're splashing it out

Well, it's about naptime for me, so I can stay awake at work tonight. Later, taters. --Romeena

May 10, 2011 - Msg 83938: he-he, Possom, your "stoved up" story reminds me of my own "stoved up" story. I had never heard that term before. When I was first going out with my husband, we stopped by to visit his mom and dad. His mom was real friendly and visited with us, but his dad stayed in his bedroom. My husband said, "where's Dad?" And his mom said, "oh, he's stoved up today." Again, I had never heard that expression before, and I had no idea what it meant. When hubbys mom left the room and we were alone, I whispered, "what's your dad mad at?" (I just assumed that stoved up meant something like, "riled up", or "fired up".) Hubby said, "Nothing, he's not mad." And I said, "well, your mom said he was stoved up, and I didn't know what about." He laughed and laughed at me, and to this day still teases me about it. I'll come in from the garden and say "I'm all stoved up." and he'll say "what are you mad at?" haha. Well, we think it's funny anyway...
Nice to meet you, Rafe. Welcome to the porch. I'm from Idaho, and have been coming to the porch since about 2000.

Well, 10-4

May 11, 2011 - Msg 83939: Haha...I think it's funny, too! Good to see ya Hazel. Bet you are having lots of fun with the grandbaby. :)

My mom used that "stoved up" expression now and then and my sister and I would laugh at her and say something sarcastic like, "Stoved up?! ha..what the heck is stoved up?..must be one of those hillbilly sayings." Mom had alot of those, being from a small mining town in West Virginia. Of course my sister and I thought they were hilarious.

Woke up at 4:30. darn it. Think I will try to get in another our of sleep before getting Erin up.

May 11, 2011 - Msg 83940: Good morning porch family! And a good morning to you Hazel, nice to meet you. May God bless you all today!

May 11, 2011 - Msg 83941: Good morning, porch! Just got in from work, saw that the pond filter was once again clogged, and made myself go out and clear it before I did anything else. Now I don't have that hanging over my head. Wish I could find a market for this algae - I've sure got a bunch of it.

"Stoved up", huh? In my family, we lost the "d", and were just "stove up". As in - "Winnie, where's Fritz this morning?" "Oh, he tried to spade up the whole garden in one day yesterday, and now he's so stove up he can barely get around. Tried to tell him...." As you might have guessed, Winnie and Fritz were my grandparents, my mom's folks. My family, on both sides, were country! I do mean coun--try! You talk about country sayin's, I've got 'em. I try to spare you folks the biggest part of it, but it slips out now and then. The "country" part of me comes out in my speech all the time, but when I'm writing, I clean it up a little. I don't really care - it's who I am. They were good honest folks, no pretense or artificiality about them, and I'm proud of my heritage.

Well, I'm hurting more than I'm willing to endure right now, because I'm very tired. I'm going to put this old "stoved up" or "stove up" body to bed and lose these aches and pains. Hazel, it's good to see you - glad you stopped by. Always a pleasure! Blessings, friends. --Romeena

May 11, 2011 - Msg 83942: Good morning, All

Hey to Hazel and a good morning!

I have a couple of "countryisms" if you will. My grandfather used to say "erl" instead of oil. And he had the most unique way of showing you how long something was. LOL! For example, he might say "Yeah, well I needed to replace that trim at the base of the wall and had to cut a piece oh, about that fer" ("fer" instead of far) He would show the measurement by putting his arm up and sticking out his index finger then put his other index finger across that same arm. So the measurement was from the index finger across the arm all the way up to the index finger pointing out. LOL! He would do that for a fish he caught, something he cut while building, how long a branch was he cut off of a tree, etc. LOL!

Well, I better get cracking. A cheery morning to MDC, Boo, Ro, Asa, Maude, Rafe, Hazel, Possum and the whole porch family! Y'all have a great day and I'll drop in a bit later!

Stoved up huh? Never heard that term before but I like it. I think I'll incorporate that into my vocabulary. Thanks Possum.
I have a co-worker who was raised down in Louisianna. She pronounces oil as all. I like to tease her about it. She's good natured and takes it well. A brother in-law from Alabama who's liked here in Utah for 35 years now, and he still is hard to understand though. Tired for him comes out "tard" and he won't help you. But he will "hep" you. I'm not sure how he has managed to hang on to his accent for this many years, other than he's proud of it and not trying to loose it. He loves Alabama, and is a disgurting "Tide" fan. I say that jokingly cause we are always giving each other a bad time about college football.
Well goot run. Much to do.
Prayers for all, especially Maude.

I noticed that gap also Spot. It looks to be part of Toms post. I am thinking maybe he tried to paste a poem there or something and it didn't take.

Hey MDC, I'm sorry. I did read your comments and meant to respond. You're right as rain. You do see a whole lot of Mayberry in Matlock. Andy often will slip in some of those Mayberry moments. I remember in one episode, while he was cross examining someone on the stand he made mention of a feller he knew who used the term "kleptromaniac". I knew who he was talking about. Almost made me feel like I was in on an inside joke with him. And of course he had a few Mayberrians on the show with him. Barney was on a number of episodes as his neighbor Les Calhoun. They often had him wearing a french beret type hat, that I reckon was done to look somewhat like his Deputy hat. And he and Andy even re-did some of there little skits, like Andy coming after Barney with a ruler, pretending it was a knife, so's that Barney (in this case Les) can demonstrate his Judo. Of course we all know how that ends up, Andy (in this case Ben) messed it up somehow. Still funny 40 years later. IMHO.

That's a good quote about the peppers Boo. And one of the reasons I don't eat em! I don't cotton to hot food, coming or going! :)

Well best get rolling. Tons to do today.

Peace and prayers for all.

May 12, 2011 - Msg 83957: Funny, Asa...hehe...(about the peppers).

Been a busy morning and just now getting to the point of stopping by. Had to take my dog Hank to the vet to get fixed. It was no easy task! He did NOT want to get into the back of the Yukon and was a nervous wreck. When I got him to the vet, he promptly pooped (alot) right on the sidewalk in front of the office!...I asked for a dustpan and pushed it into the flowerbed to keep some poor, unsuspecting pet-owner from getting a really bad surprise. The dog weighs only 60 lbs, which is not bad at all since he is part great dane, but it is 60 lbs of energy and pure strength. Not easy to handle in that kind of situation. Have to pick him at at 3, darn it...(kidding).

Better go, more chores to do...laundry (of course) and some other things that need doin'.
