Boo and REV, I did find the Return to Mayberry movie available on the internet. But there is a catch. It is included when you purchase the entire series over at Amazon. According to one reviewer, "The TV movie, Return To Mayberry finally makes it's way to DVD as a bonus feature in this set. It is uncut and presented just as originally broadcast in 1986."
Check out http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000NA21YA/imdb-button/

Amazon also sells the VHS tape version of this movie. But the tapes currently available are used.

Hey SPOT, we almost bumped into each other.

auh2o

January 19, 2011 - Msg 82368: Morning Auh2o and SPOT. Speaking of deer, they say there are some on the acres next to us but I have never caught a glimpse of one. A neighbor down the street told Bruce that he sees them on his way to work in the morning. I guess they hide from me.

I was thinking about deer yesterday because when I went to see my dad, he smelled just like a deer..no kidding. If you know that deer smell, you know what I am talking about. I asked mom when he showered last and she said a couple of days ago but I know it had to be much longer. How do you get an 85 yr old man to take a shower when he doesn't want to? Susan sometimes has to sneak around and steal his dirty clothes when he is in the shower so he won't put them back on again. So strange because he used to be an immaculate kind of guy...showered at least once ad day, sometimes twice and always wore cologne..and not the cheap stuff. I used to keep him supplied with the good stuff on birthdays, etc. I guess he just doesn't have the energy to take care of himself anymore...at least he still has bladder control. Its going to be a sad day when he needs diapers.

Guess i should change the subject..this is not such pleasant "coffee conversation".

Its shaping up to be a pleasant day, though humid. The winds will be out of the southeast today which is off the water. Yesterday was amazing..north breeze and cool with low humidity.

Mother-in-law took a fall yesterday on her way out of her apartment and luckily she fell in the grass and someone saw her and helped her back into her apartment. She was very sore last night and SIL went to stay the night and keep an eye on her. I am afraid she is getting more feeble in a hurry and I am concerned about it because I don't want her to be in a nursing home but I can only take care of so many folks at once. My parents are getting more needy and I still have kids at home, one with special needs. Bruce has three siblings and I know it is going to be hard to get them to step up and take care of their mother. Vicki, who is staying with us, will probably be willing but she and her mom don't get along. Lord help us. I see some definite challenges up the road.

Better get started on the chores around here and get Sean's schooling done. Talk to you again soon...uh, could you give me a shove out of this rocking chair, Auh2o?

OK, here comes my annual plug for the Mayberry Cruise. If you'll go to the sidebar on the right of the Mayberry.com home page, and click on "Events Calendar" up near the top of the sidebar, then go to the very bottom, you'll find the info on the cruise. It's Nov. 12-17 this year, sails fron Tampa on Royal Caribbean's "Jewel of the Seas", and will visit Cozumel and Costa Maya. Should be a lot of fun. This ship is a bit smaller than Carnival's "Fascination", I think, which can be a good thing. Not such a long walk to get from one end to the other. Anyway, it should be a lot of fun. Eloise and I already have our trip partly paid for. I love being able to pay in installments, it's a lot easier that way. We decided to spend $90 more and get a cabin with a balcony this time. I love to just sit and enjoy the view of the ocean, and see if I can spot some dolphins. Never have, but I keep trying! Anyway, I hope some of you will consider going. You will enjoy it very much, you'll meet our own Floyd and his lovely Jan, and best of all, I'll get to meet you! I'd like that.

I think I'm going to call Eloise and see if she feels up to going to our favorite Mexican restaurant for lunch today. Jerry took her to rehab yesterday, and she handled the activity well, so I'm betting she can navigate that restaurant, especially if we go early before it gets crowded.

Well, better run. I've got to wash my hair before I leave this house. As it is now, I'd scare children and small animals! Blessings, all. --Romeena

AUH20- here's an interesting question straight from Shakespeare. What if a dear was named a rhinocerous and a rhino was named a dear, would
we have the same opinion of each? haha
Boo- my dad loves TAGS, so when we go over to his apt now, and he has any kind of smell, we just say "OTIS!" and he starts undressing for a shower. We have watched the "Aunt Bee Warden" several times together and so now he's "conditioned." It may sound terrible to some, but it works, and he makes up his own episode as we go. He's now almost 93, and he even admits that it's just laziness. Can you just come out and ask your dad? "Dad you used to be so clean, what gives ?" Just a thought.
Ro- we'll give it some thought this year.. sounds so neat!
Well, have a good day, prayers,
MDC

January 19, 2011 - Msg 82372: Haha..that's too funny MDC. Yes, I and my sister and her husband have all talked to dad. 5 years ago when we lived with him, I would tell him plain, "Dad, you must take a shower. You smell bad". Sometimes it would work, sometimes not. The other day I was over there and noticed he had a spray bottle of Febreze extra-strength fabric deodorizer (forgive me if I have already shared this story) and I told him I wanted to take it to go spray it in his van. He said, be sure you bring it back because I use that. "What for?" I asked. He said he sprays himself with it...and he WASN'T kidding. :-(

Yes REV, it sure could have been bad for MIL but she was out of bed early and going to Bingo this morning so I guess all is well. She is refusing to use her can, though, so I will have to sic Bruce on her later.

Today I was watching the "Andy's English Valet" episode involving Malcolm Merriwether when I noticed a couple of strange things.
#1 Malcolm insists that Andy wear his uniform hat as he leaves the house to go to work. Was this the only time during the entire series Andy wore his uniform hat?
#2 Also when Andy tries to sneak out of the house to go to work, Malcolm was standing next to a car parked in the Taylor's driveway. Malcolm was holding the passenger side rear door open for Andy. This was strange because:
- the car door Malcolm was holding was dark
- the Mayberry police car had white doors
- Malcolm used a bicycle and had no car
So where did this dark door car come from?

Anyone else have other goofs from TAGS?

from Poor Horatio

January 19, 2011 - Msg 82376: PH, it's explained in the beginning of that episode, about where that car came from. I believe Aunt Bee says something like "Ms Edwards is leaving her car and wants you to drive it to keep the battery up" (or something like that). I haven't watched that one in awhile, but I believe it's something like that. And later in the episode, Andy mentions it again. And I think that was the only time we see Andy in his uniform hat.

January 20, 2011 - Msg 82384: Good morning, all. I just got home from work, and it's 10:30! Had to stay for a unit conference and then went to the grocery store, then gassed up the car before coming home, because it's getting cold!!! It was in the 50s when I went to work last night, and is now 34, which is predicted to be the high for the day. It's steadily dropping, and there's a vicious north wind blowing. May get some snow by tonight. Brrrr! At least I don't have to be back at work until Tuesday night, so I can just burrow in here with little Starr and we'll hibernate.

Tom, I know you worry about your stepdad. I was wondering - how far away from your house is the creek where he fishes? If it's not too far, maybe you could get him one of those compressed-air horns like people annoy other people with at sports events. Then if he got in trouble, all he'd have to do is pull the trigger on the horn and it would sound a very loud blast. You could then go see about him. Those things carry pretty far, because they're VERY loud.

Well, got to put the groceries away and get into my jammies, and make a restful day of it. Well, after I put out critter feed, that is. Poor little wild things are hungry and cold, and there's not much out there for them now. All the flower seed-heads have been picked clean, almost all the berries are gone from the various bushes, even the rose hips have been pretty well gnawed down. I see little furry noses poking out of the nest boxes - they're probably wondering when I'm going to show up with the food.

Well, blessings to you all. I'm off to finish my little chores, then down for a nap! --Romeena

January 20, 2011 - Msg 82385:
MDC, I had to go to YouTube to view that episode of Guest of Honor at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-v0EKPV08kc.
If you cue it up to the hotel stoop scene at 10:10 of that video, you will notice that when the guest shakes hands, he uses his right hand to grasp the right hand of the recipient in the typical shake hands grasp, and also wraps his left hand around the right wrist of the recipient (presumably to unclasp their wrist-watch).
Notice that he never shakes Barney's hand. He only shakes the hands of Andy, the three deputies, and a banner holder. That could explain why Barney still had his watch later inside the hotel.
But there is still something odd about this. How many men actually wear their wrist-watch on their right wrist? Usually it is only left handed men.

I discovered something else unusual with the episode. Andy deputized three deputies. One was Floyd and the other two I did not recognize. But I thought it was odd that neither Gomer nor Goober nor Otis was among the deputies. They have been deputized in other episodes.

possum under a rock, I might sound prudish, but I still prefer the sweetness and innocence personified by the Mayberry manicurist as opposed to the girating performer at the link you posted.

No offense to anyone but I thought it was pretty darned lame, but it was good to see all the old characters again. Anyway, in the movie Andy and Helen are older and moving back to Mayberry, and Opie has his first child. What I was wondering was whatever happened to the child that Andy and Helen had together? Am or dreaming or wasn't there an episode of TAGS or Mayberry RFD in which Andy and Helen visit Mayberry with a new baby?

Boo, if you're dreaming, I had the same dream!Yes, Andy & Helen had a baby- I am pretty sure it was a boy and his name was Andy Jr. Seems like that stuck in my mind because I wondered why Andy's firstborn (Opie) wasn't named Andy Jr. Anybody have any idea how they came up with the name "Opie" anyhow?

Boo and possum under a rock, the first episode of the second season of Mayberry RFD is titled "Andy's Baby" and is described as "Emmett, Howard and Goober want to be the godfather of Andy and Helen's new baby."

possum under a rock, regarding the selection of "Opie" as the first name for Andy's son, I discovered the following on the internet: "There are two explanations of the name's origin. One is that Opie Taylor was named by Andy Griffith after bandleader and radio actor Opie Cates. The other is that he was named for Opie Shelton (1915–1999), a childhood friend of Griffith, who went on to become president of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce."

Possum- there is a section on this very site named FAQs, so ya dont have to be lookin under every rock(HA),
and in that it states:
What was the origin of the name Opie? Was it short for something?
Jim Clark once told me that Opie Taylor was most likely named for Opie Cates, a prominent bandleader of the '40s or '50s whom Andy Griffith and Sheldon Leonard both admired. I have never figured out if Mr. Cates' name was short for something else, or if it was really "O.P." Opie Taylor did spell his name O-P-I-E. It can be seen on the love note he wrote to Miss Crump in "Opie Loves Helen", and on the board he burned his name into in "Barney's Sidecar."

Gomer didn't appear until "Man in a Hurry", about 20 or so episodes later. And Goober wasn't even referred to until "Man in a Hurry", and didn't appear on screen until the "Fun Girls" episode, in the 5th season, I think.

And wasn't Goober's first appearance when he did the Cary Grant imitation of "Judy Judy Judy"?

from Poor Horatio

January 20, 2011 - Msg 82395: Yes, Goober's first appearance was in "Fun Girls" where he did the Judy Judy Judy line. I love that one. And Gomer's first episode was the "Man in a Hurry" ep, although it was actually written after the next episode, the "The Bank Job" (the one with Barney in the vault), but it aired before it.

January 21, 2011 - Msg 82396: Good morning, everyone. Goodness, you folks are so knowledgeable! I would have had no clue. The time lines are one big blur to me. I think watching the eps as much as I do, and in such random order, I just feel like everyone on the show was always there. I did know that Gomer came before Goober, but that's about as far as I could go with it.

Well, today is a medical day. I've got to drive out to Southlake to see the spine doctor, been having lots of problems as I've mentioned before, and while he does have a suggested treatment, I want to talk to him a little more before we proceed. I don't want to just treat a symptom and miss the underlying cause. Then it's back to Irving to see my cardiologist - just a routine thing. Had labs drawn last week, and they look great. Kidney values are a bit wonky, but not bad. Diabetes indicators look fine. I wish someone had drawn an RA factor and a sed rate, because I think that might have helped the spine guy, but I guess if he wants them, he'll get them. I just hate getting stuck again. Oh, I just have to mention this. I eat a lot of dairy products, and none of them are low fat. Who ever heard of fat-free sour cream? It's an oxymoron. When I make ice cream, I put real cream in it, very little milk. If my steak or pork chop has some fat on it, so be it. I take no statin drugs. Now, with all that, my cholesterol was 187, with HDL 52 and LDL 101. Not bad for an old gal with diabetes! How about that?

OK, gotta hit the shower. The bad traffic should be about over by the time I leave, but can't be sure, so I'm leaving a bit early. Toye Starr will be upset, since she usually goes along when I leave in the daytime, but such is life. She'll be happy when I get home. Blessings, all. --Romeena

January 21, 2011 - Msg 82404: Good afternoon, porch! Just got home from two doctor appointments, have several more scheduled in the next few weeks. The spine doc wants a CT to confirm that there's nothing else going on, then we'll do another steroid injection on the two nerves he thinks are the culprits. If I get temporary relief from the pain with those injections, then we'll go back and do an RFA on them to just kill them. That's a Radio Frequency Ablation, which means they will use controlled radio waves to kill out those two nerves. Sounds good to me, because I've had about all of this I care to take.

Good news - I also saw my cardiologist today and he thinks I'm doing great. The valvular murmur which was more like a roar in the past was improved when he saw me six months ago, and is even more improved now. He can barely hear it. This doesn't happen often, where a murmur caused by a leaky valve will spontaneously improve, but it does happen occasionally, and he thinks I've been "chosen". He was very happy with my cholesterol levels, and pronounced me "very fortunate", since I do this with no dietary restrictions and certainly no drugs. I think "fortunate" is just another word for "blessed". God is good.

Well, I need to go play with this little sorrowful, mistreated and abused puppy. She was not happy with me leaving, and even pouted just a little bit when I got home. She is so spoiled!

I engaged Sean in a little TAGS quote-a-thon in the car tonight and he was darned good, I'm tellin' you. You should have heard him quoting from The Loaded Goat episode...he could do the whole scene with Otis and "Uncle Nat" and Andy and Barney when the goat was loose in the courthouse. Hilarious. Makes me proud when my kids can quote TAGS...of course my family would think i was a nut for saying so but "it is what it is". ;-)

Minus 10 degrees, Auh2o?!! I can't even conceive of such a thing..never even experienced it. How long does it take you to go numb in temps like that? It's in the 30's here and the locals act like they are freezing to death. Tonight Sean pointed out a truck in the store parking lot with Alaska plates and he said, "Well, I guess they came down here to get warmed up in this 30 degree climate."

Thanks for the "Opie" info, PH. Interesting stuff- I'd never heard of anyone named Opie-so there were at least 2 real life Opies that we know of, huh!?
Anybody wanna meet me at the Diner for breakfast? Let's eat!

Hey Folks

-14 here this morning. The wind is still so it onlyfeels -14. Still not as cold as pappabear's rocker. Tomorrow & Monday are suppose to be colder.

Boo-I feel the same when you Texas and AZ (read MDC) have 100+ degree temperatures day after day. I believe I read somewhere that WNY has never seen a 100 degree day. I loved the "Yep, they are probably wearing bikinis" line. Funny.

Rev-We warm alright some of us turn the heat up a little too much for my taste. Honestly, inside some homes it feels like some of us are trying to grow orchids.

PH & Hazel-I'm enjoying the the TAGS history lesson. As much as I love the show,I fall in with Romeena, "I did know that Gomer came before Goober, but that's about as far as I could go with it."

Ro-I jump from episode to episode also, even when I play our DVD's.

Peace,
auh2o

January 22, 2011 - Msg 82411: I'm with you, Auh2o...I don't like it hot in the house. When it gets cold here, we don't usually turn on the heat and the house stays at around 70 which is perfect. This foam insulation we put in does a great job. I was out this morning giving the goats and donkey some apples and it is warming up into a perfect day...the sun is really shining and it is comfortable long-sleeve weather. Wish you were here to enjoy it because you really would, I think. It would be great to sit on the porch with you and chat in this beautiful weather.

Do you take cream and sugar in your coffee, TOM?

Possum, when we had breakfast at the diner, did you leave Olive a quarter tip?

January 22, 2011 - Msg 82413: Good morning, porch! We're at 41 degrees here, not much wind, sun shining brightly, so it's pretty pleasant. This would be a good day to do some yard work, but I've got other things I need to do. David and Brittney and the boys are coming this evening and David will take my Christmas lights down. I unplugged them last week, but they need to come off the roof, and this old gal doesn't do roofs. In fact, two steps up a ladder is an adventure, and I'll do three if I just must, but that's about it. Also, there are nine deer, a sleigh and two snowmen in the back yard that need to be brought in and hung on their hooks in the garage. It's a pretty big chore, and our deal is I cook while he dismantles and stores things away. He will, of course, text his brother in Florida and gloat about the pork chops or round steak Mom is cooking for him.

I think I'll take the linens off my bed, and get Dave to help me put clean ones on. That Tempur-pedic bed is wonderful, but it's sooo heavy! Putting linens on it just takes all I've got. No harm in taking advantage of a little muscle when I get the chance.

Gosh, Boo, I'd just love to give the goats and Thelma Lou some apples. Maybe some carrots, too. Sounds wonderful. One of these days, I will. I discovered that my granddaughter lives just a few blocks from you. She's on W. Nelson.

Well, got to get busy around here. Blessings, all. --Romeena

January 22, 2011 - Msg 82416: Ro, I take W Nelson to take Erin to school in the morning so I may very well pass her house each weekday. Small world, eh? I hope I can meet her sometime when you come for a visit. Let her know that one of your friends lives very near her in case she ever needs anything. I will email you my phone number to give her if you like. I'm curious about how she ended up here...maybe you already told me but I don't remember if you did.

It is such a beautiful night here...cool and clear and you can see so many stars tonight. I sat out on the front porch and sang "Down in the Valley" tonight in honor of my porch buddies. hehe

Boo

January 22, 2011 - Msg 82417: Good evening, porch! Dave and Brittney and the boys, and Eloise and Jerry just left, and I'm about to crash. Pain in my left side is particularly bad tonight, not sure why. I've been sitting around with an ice pack on it, but it's not helping. I need to just go to bed, it eases up when I lie down.

All the outside lights are now down, deer are up on their holders on the garage wall, lights are coiled in bins and stored away for another year. What would I do without that boy, and his equally helpful wife? Actually, Brittney got in the kitchen with me and helped me a great deal, using "I want to learn how to make your gravy" as an excuse. She wasn't fooling me, she was trying to take the load off me. I'm so blessed!

Boo, I'd be delighted to pass your phone number on to Amanda. Actually, she's a little country girl, and would probably love to meet the goats and Thelma Lou. She's very busy, with a full time job at Wells Fargo bank, and going to school online at the same time. She just finished her Associate of Arts degree, and is going on now for the Bachelor of Arts. Still, I know she'd like to meet you. I'm hoping to get down there before too long, and will definitely include a visit with you. A big glass of tea on your porch sounds heavenly!

Well, I'm going to take my aching body to bed. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

January 23, 2011 - Msg 82418: Good Sunday porch, where is everybody this afternoon. We went to sunday school and church this morning and then to lunch to celebrate Mr. Maude 52nd birthday which is today.

Traveled about and hour and half yesterday to watch Patricks girlfriend play basketball. She got a basketball scholarship to play for a small colle in Pikeville KY. Pikeville is about 2 hours from us. They don't play colleges close to us at all but did play University of Va at Wise VA yesterday so we were able to go watch. Seemed to please her to have us come. made for a busy day and I didn't get any chores done so I am doing 5 loads of laundry today!

Staying cold on my end of the porch with more snow expected off and on this week.

Hope you are feeling better Romeena.

SPOT, I am wondering if you would contract yourself out? We need some remodeling done on our bathrooms and kitchen... I promise to feed you very well.. lots of SLAW included.

Supper menu will be: cubed steak and gravy, smashed potatoes, green beans, SLAW, corn. fried squash, homemade rolls with butter. chocolate creme pie for dessert. tea, kool aid to drink.

Have a blessed day. Prayers all around.

Big Maude

January 23, 2011 - Msg 82423: Maude, it always seems kinda slow on the porch on Sundays, doesn't it? Maybe that is the way it should be. I have had a relaxing day. Church was good, Mark taught from Titus 1 (Paul talkes about qualities that should be found in the life of church leaders) since we are having a deacon election next week.

After church, we went and had lunch at a local buffet-syle place that was packed with people! We had a gift certificate that mom-in-law had given us for Christmas so we went there but talk about hoards of people...I think that will be the last time we go there after church.

Tried to take an afternoon nap but there is always so much noise around (two hearing impaired people living here, so lots of loud talk, as you might imagine). Been nice and restful today, though...kind of a cloudy, rainy day.

Guess I will see you all in the morning with the coffee...I'll bring the whole pot for whoever wants some.

Looks like Pitt and Green bay this year!
SPOT- you work WAY too much for my likin'. ha

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MR MAUDE! And thanks for supper.

Hey Folks

A little more weather talk MDC, it's -22 here this morning with a wind chill of -35 which earned the girls their first "snow day" of the school year. It is so cold it almost takes the air out of your lungs. Calvin Coolidge would say it was cold.

Boo-I know what you mean about "hoards of people" this past weekend we ventured into the city and stopped by one of the malls. My goodness! Was there a bunch of humanity shopping and having fun. It was good to see.

MDC-To show you how out of it I am (like you needed more proof) I didn't know what you meant by "Looks like Pitt and Green." It took a second for it to sink in.

Spot-I bet you've been busy at work lately.

Peace,
auh2o

January 24, 2011 - Msg 82426: -22?! Aaahhh! Can't even imagine. How do you even get out in it and go anywhere, Auh2o? Do you have a "Snuggie"?? hehe

Yep, MDC, I only know one line of "Old Mule" (thanks to Gomer).

We are supposed to host a superbowl party and I don't even watch football (although I did know what MDC was talking about when he said Pitt and Green).

Better drag poor Erin out from her warm covers. Somehow I am very glad it is NOT -22 here this morning (only 40 degrees).

Boo

January 24, 2011 - Msg 82427: Good morning, porch! Cold here too, at 28. I know that sounds balmy to some of you, but to us Texans, that's DANG cold!

Thank goodness it IS Pitt and Green Bay. BO had said if Chicago was in the Super Bowl, he was going to be there. That's about all we need around here, to have him coming to town. The security preparations for such a visit have to be just unbelievable. It starts with the shutting down of everything that flies for a good while before he arrives. That would cripple D/FW airport for hours, and of course, it's a MAJOR hub. For people trying to fly in on game day, that would be disastrous. His presence would strain every police and public safety organization for miles around. As for the secret service, I'm sure they've been scoping the area out for some time, knowing there was even a remote possibility that Chicago would win and "he" would be there, but local police are not really geared for that. Then, God forbid, if some idiot decides to get his name in the headlines, well -- Dallas has been there before, and we really don't want to be there again. I'm no fan of Mr. O, but no way would I want something like that to happen.

All this hoopla over the game just amazes me. Can you believe that people are actually paying $200 each, to stand OUTSIDE the stadium during the game, just so they can say they have been there? And the powers that be are letting Jerry Jones count them in the attendance total? I say if you can't even get a glimpse of the field, if you weren't even in the building, then how can you say you were "at the game?" Maybe I just don't understand. I'm thinking that for most of those "outside fans", they're just spending $200 each to buy an excuse to stand around and swill beer, and punch each other on the arm and holler "flinch!"

Well, got to get moving. I have to be out in Southlake by 9:15 for a CT scan, and have to stop by my hospital on the way and get a CD that contains some old CTs and their reports, for comparison. Traffic will be awful, but I'll make it okay if I leave by 8:00.

Blessings, and stay warm! --Romeena

January 24, 2011 - Msg 82428: Just for the record, MDC said "Pitt and Green bay". I think some folks missed the "bay" part because it wasn't capitalized. If you had seen that, you would have immediately known what he meant. I missed it at first too, but knew what he meant because Eloise and I had just been talking about it before I got on the porch. --Romeena

RO- I'm not real big on the game, that is why my mention of it was so short. Some people will spend 10,000 for a seat. The whole thing makes little sense to me. Football is a fun sport, but
I just never got into all the hype.

Morning Porch

Well friends, we've had a 53 degree warm up since yesterday. It's 31 here this morning.

SPOT-Old buddy, maybe you should open a window. From here it looks like you're talking to yourself, and answering. Breakfast sounds great!

Boo-Nope, don't have a Snuggie, though they look warm. To tell ya the truth, I love the weather when it's like that. It is really an awesome phenomenon. I really like to take it all in when it occurs.

MDC-The football hype is what turned me off from the sport, every week seemed like "Wrestle Mania" to me. The players all dance around and the "talk trash" after they make a tackle or gain a couple of yards on a run. All that's missing is Mochoman Savage or Chief White-Owl. Or, maybe, Johnny Powers, now there was an athlete.

Peace,
auh2o
