November 10, 2010 - Msg 81660: Good morning, porch. It's just beautiful here today, temp is 66, sky is almost completely clear, just a few puffy little vagabond clouds to add interest. Everything is still green, roses are blooming, reblooming iris are living up to their name (so glad I made that special bed just for them), yellow hibiscus has some eye-popping blooms, pentas, periwinkles and verbena are putting on a last brave show, and just for fun, the crape myrtles are changing to their fall colors. The rest of the trees haven't even thought about changing yet, but the splashes of russet and gold on the crape myrtles around the yard are such a pretty contrast. I have five of them scattered around, and they're so nice. Four are of the smaller variety, about eight to ten feet tall, but one (the one I trapped the cat in) is about twenty-five feet or so, with six separate trunks, and it's just so pretty.

We over-seeded the lawn with fescue about three weeks ago, and it's up and thriving. The yard is emerald green, and will remain so through the winter. Then next spring, when the heat returns, the fescue will wither up and disappear into the sod, providing great compost. Lovely!

I'm really concerned about all our absent porchsters. I know we probably lost some a while back, when the political talk was raging, and I'm sorry for that. However, I don't think that's the whole problem. I think we've lost some folks to other places, specifically Facebook, and I wish that wouldn't happen. Personally, I'm not involved in Facebook - have had numerous invitations, but just don't think I want to do it. However, for those who do, I wish you well and hope you have a lot of fun. I just hope people won't start migrating there and leaving the porch. Why not do both? I realize things change in people's lives and we're going to lose some folks through natural attrition, but please - don't abandon the porch and move to Facebook. At least come by and visit now and then. We miss you! Maybe those of you who do visit Facebook could mention it there, and encourage our missing porchsters to come home, at least now and then.

Well, I've got to get busy. My son will be here tomorrow afternoon, expecting a dinner of pork chops and round steak, and then we leave for Florida on Friday morning. His room is clean, with clean linens, and the bathroom up front is clean, but the rest of the house is a disaster! I'll zip through with a swiffer duster and a vacuum, and make it presentable enough - shouldn't take more than an hour or two. Grocery shopping is next, then I've got to pack. Laundry is done, so that won't take long. I pack light when I go out there. I'm really looking forward to this trip - haven't been out there in over three years. Also, the flight will be fun, with my son at the controls! Toye Starr has never flown before, so that should be interesting too. The Plum was an experienced traveler, flew many times, but this will be Starr's first trip. She does well in the car, though, so I don't expect any problems.

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Yes, MDC, this will be our first thanksgiving in the house and looks like it is going to be a big one...lots of family but I won't be doing all the cooking. I will do the turkey and dressing but everyone else will bring the rest.

November 11, 2010 - Msg 81665: Mornin' Honeys! Its me again. Hope everyone had a good night's rest. It has been very warm here in south texas this week...in the 80's yesterday and I was wearing my usual shorts and flip-flops.

Asa, I thought of you on Sunday; there was a cartoon in the funny papers that showed a guy standing in his yard with a leaf blower, trying to blow the first snowflakes of winter back up into the sky! hehe

Well, MDC, I think I have shared just about all of my thanksgiving stories with you all...except maybe Thanksgiving of 1987. I have very fond memories of it being a special holiday. My mother prepared a wonderful meal and invited a nice elderly couple who had just moved into the neighborhood. They were very nice and very interesting people...I think he was from the Dominican Republic and had some real stories to tell. I invited Karen and her little girl who was only 2 at the time and Karen was still new to Texas and he only family was all the way back in New York city. It was one of those rare, cold, cloudy days in S Texas and there was a fire in the fireplace, mom broke out the good china and all was right with the world. I sure miss those thanksgivings at home when mom cooked up a storm. The smell of turkey on thanksgiving morning...staying in my pj's to watch the Macy's parade...good times. I try to get the kids to watch it with me now but they think its boring, so I usually peek at it from the kitchen while cooking. I think the cooking and serving will be much easier this year in my kitchen...the sucker is big enough for several cooks to be preparing food at once and lots of counter and island space for serving. I just doon't have enough table space to seat everyone together. I have the kitchen island and I will bring a table from downstairs. Now MDC, are you sorry you asked us about thanksgiving?

Better get erin up and going..

November 11, 2010 - Msg 81667: Hey ya'll - I am on old faithful this morning and she is cooperating so far.

I am in some desparate need of prayers. We are going through some mighty stressful times in our household. We are part of the Freddie Mac controversy that has reared its head in recent weeks. We are having a hard time finding a lawyer who wants to help us - they have basically told us - good luck and shut the door in our faces. Believe it or not, I contacted the ACLU this morning with our complaint and have been in contact with Indiana Attorney General as well. I can't go into all of the details but it really stinks of bureaucracy and the good ol boy network. I have never been one to hate - I can always find at least a small part of good - I can't do that right now. I am finding myself with a huge hole in my heart consumed with hate. I don't like it at all. There has to be some resolution soon. It has absolutely affected everyone in the family, me and my husband, my kids, my in-laws, everyone. We all have the feeling of hate.

I don't mean to bring this somber day to focus on me - but my dad fought for my liberties. He fought so that government didn't come in and steal from you. I thank him for that! I thank God for our veterans and for those fighting now. Please remember them not only today but during the holidays.

God Bless us!

November 11, 2010 - Msg 81669: Good morning, porch! Frankie, I'm glad you stopped by. Please do it more often, and stay a while!

Boo, like you, I find it hard to pull out one memory from all the lovely Thanksgiving holidays I've enjoyed. Growing up, we usually ate at my grandparents' house when I was very small, then we moved to the country and everyone came to our house. After Dale and I married, we moved around a lot, and usually went to my parents again for the holiday. One exception was when we spent the holiday with his family in Michigan. My MIL is and was a very good cook, but I was horrified at her method of cooking the turkey. Still am, for that matter! She put that poor bird in a big stock pot and boiled it. Yes, boiled it! Once it was done to her satisfaction, she transferred it to a roasting pan and stuck the poor thing in the oven to "brown it off". Well, it browned it alright, and also baked out every last trace of moisture it might have held. The stock in the pot was used to make the stuffing, and it was passable, but the bird was pathetic. I asked a couple of questions about the process, and that evidently clued her that we Texans use a different method, so she asked how we cook a turkey. When I told her we stuff the bird and roast it all together, she was as horrified as I had been. She declared we should all have died from food poisoning by now, as there was no way it could get "done" using that method, and eating "raw" poultry could kill you. Well, there's nothing "raw" about our turkeys, and the way I cook mine that rascal will make you want to hurt yourself. The hard part is getting it out of the pan, as it just falls apart. You can't believe how good it is. Let me just say this - when your DIL asks you for a detailed outline of the preparation, and calls you a dozen times while she's cooking a bird, you must be doing something right.

After we moved to this house in 1973, most Thanksgiving meals were here. My kitchen is very large, with two full-size ovens, and I can seat 21 (23 if the ones at the kitchen table are friendly), with everyone comfortable and within conversational distance. The number can increase a lot if I get out card tables, but don't usually have to do that. I love the layout of this house, and if I ever built another home, I'd use this plan again. I'd just add about five feet across the back, which would allow me to expand the bedrooms just a little, and make my bathroom, my closet, the office and the kitchen and sunroom a little bigger. Still, it's big enough and I love this house.

During my family's growing-up years, I never knew how many I was going to feed, so always bought at least a 22-lb turkey, and usually a ham as well. My kids would bring in strays - "Mom, Tim's family is going to Oklahoma for Thanksgiving, and he can't go because he has to work on Friday, so can he come here?" Well, of course he could. Dale was prone to do the same, and we always had interesting conversation, and always enough food. Lots of friendships were forged around the tables in those days. I miss them.

Well, blessings, porch! --Romeena

Ro, I sure would like to know how you cook your turkey...*hint*hint*... I have lots of relatives in Michigan but I have never heard of boiling a turkey! I think that was just your MILs thing...sounds like she was kind of paranoid about an uncooked bird so she took some sort of delight in boiling the devil out of the turkey..hehe. Have you ever had a fried turkey?? A friend from louisianna fried one for us one year and it was the best turkey I ever ate. I always just bake mine in the oven, though. I don't stuff it with dressing, though. I put some cut up onion and apples, along with salt and some butter in the cavity of the turkey when I bake it. It never turns out dry but I still want to know how you do your's. I wish I could seat as many people as you can! We always have lots of folks at thanksgiving. I think one of my old school friends and her daughter may be coming this year, along with some family from out of town, plus the usual local family members (which includes 17 to 20). My kitchen table will only seat 8, tops and I can put a few at the island. That's only about half of them...darn.

You are welcome, MDC..OMGosh, you made me laugh out loud with that giraffe post!

Better get up and start doing something this morning.

By the way, just wanted to let you all know that my injured goat is doing great. After the ear fell off, it healed up well and almost looks cute...like a little ear. If I was rich, I would have the other trimmed off to match it! ;-) She is back to her original, brash, ornery self and is so fun to watch. Those goats are fattening up for the cooler months and they look like fat old ladies when they run! haha...yesterday Bruce was out back working on the stable and he had his old red ranger truck back there full of sheets of tin and those goats when wild climbing on the stuff. Raspberry (the earless goat) jumped right up on the very top of the cab of the truck and planted herself there. Luckily, Bruce doesn't mind them climbing on the old thing. He is talking about putting an electric wire around the bottom of the fence line back there to prevent any dogs from coming in and doing the kind of damage they did last time. It would be hard because it would have to cover about 2 acres of fence but it wouldn't cost too much and the peace of mind would be great. I am still afraid to put my baby goats back there at night...they are getting so big but still, I am nervous about something happening again. Old Thelma Lou is doing well and still as affectionate!

Better get out of here now...love to all.

I wanted to share a Thelma the donkey story with you today...as I mentioned before, Bruce is building a stable and he is in the process of putting on the roof. He has to go up and down the ladder alot and everytime he goes up to secure a section of the roof, when its time to come down the ladder, Thelma Lou is under it and he has to make her move. Crazy thing just stands under the ladder all day...I guess she just wants to be close to her "belove-ded", as Earnest T would say.

Think I will get to bed...about to fall asleep on the keyboard. I woke up way too early this morning.

November 13, 2010 - Msg 81697: Good evening, porch. It's late, and I'm a bit tired, after a very busy but enjoyable day. My son is here, and we ran all over creation today. He has a rent house here he wanted to check on, then wanted to drive around in that area of town and look at the houses he built when he was building here, to see how they're holding up. They all look great, very pretty homes.

Tonight I fried round steak and some pork chops, made milk gravy, noodles, cooked some squash and made some pineapple ice cream. Eloise and Jerry came over, and of course Dave and Brittney and the grandsons. Dale and Dave moved my big plumeria tree into the garage, because it will be getting cold here soon, and it can't take anything much below 40. It was a job - took them both and they're both strong guys. It's in a pot, one of those composite things (not clay) but it's still very heavy.

We're going to a grandson's baseball game at 9:30 in the morning, then back here and hopefully in the air by 1 p.m. There's a Blue Angels air show in Pensacola in the afternoon, and if we hit that area too early we'll have to turn back or go waaay around. When they're in the air, it's a no-fly zone, for obvious reasons. They're supposed to be finished by 4 p.m. though, and we should hit the area about 4:30, so should be fine.

Boo, I love the goat and Thelma Lou stories. One of these days, I'm going to get to meet them, I hope. How far are you from Port Aransas?

I'm sorry for all you sinus sufferers. I guess I've really been blessed, as I have no allergies, and have only had a couple of sinus infections over the years. I'm not sure I could use one of those neti pots.

Spot, I'm glad your dad is doing well. Sounds like he had what we used to call a "stone-basket procedure". He'll be sore for a couple of days, but at least it didn't require an open surgery.

Homemaker, I'm still praying for you, my friend, that the issue will be resolved soon, and you can get on with your life, unworried and unmolested.

I was wondering about Hazel too. No, I haven't heard from her, but then I usually don't, except here on the porch. I hope she's okay.

Beautiful day here..cool and dry at about 60 degrees. Bruce, Sean, and his friend Josh have been finishing up the roof on the stable out back and I have been upstairs in the storage going through my Christmas boxes to see what to keep and what to get rid of, preparing for the holidays. I found the rest of my christmas dishes and washed and put them away. Years ago a bought a really cute set of Pfalsfraff (I am guessing on the spelling) Christmas dishes that are white with the cutest, simple pattern of them of children playing in the snow and making a snowman...there is a litle dog frolicking behind them and there is a red barn decorated for Christmas. I just love them..not fancy but really cute. I have been looking forward to putting them in their proper place in the cabinets of our house and using them at christmas time.

My neighbor across the street (who is 80) just picked a bunch of green beans from her garden and brought me a bunch...yay! I think I will go snap them and cook them up.

Oh, I was watching a little of an old western on AMC this morning and it had Jimmy Stewart and AUNT BEE in it! She played a rough and tough pioneer woman. I don't know the name of the movie but Jimmy Stewart's name was McKlintock in the movie. Ring any bells for anyone??

Better get back to the chores and preparation for Thanksgiving. I am working to get everything done because I have to see the cardiologist on the 23rd and I have a pretty good idea he is going to want me to have a heart cath (darn it). I want to have the CT scan instead but my stupid insur@nce won't pay for it. November 14, 2010 - Msg 81705: Thanks MDC. I tried fish oil and it made me really nauseated but recently my doc gave me something called Lovazo and it is some sort of fish/omega 3 oil that I can tolerate and it doesn't make me sick. It is expensive, though, unfortunately. I try to get alot of garlic in my diet but don't take the capsules.

I have been eating less and being much more careful about the kinds of foods I eat and am getting enough sleep and staying active, so I am feeling better anyway. I am going to have to practice some self-control with the holidays approaching. It seems like the older I get, the less my stomach can tolerate big meals and I feel so miserable if I over-indulge so it is easier to push away from the table than it used to be.

Thinking about Homemaker and sending up a prayer. Check in soon HM.

It is cloudy and almost cold here this morning...I LOVE it. I put a fire int he fireplace last night and the kids and I watched Ralphie in "A Christmas Story"...fun. You know what else?...as I was unpacking some Christmas things in the attic, I came across a box of addressed Christmas cards that I never sent from last year and they were written to my fellow porch friends last year! Ro, are you going to be mailing out the christmas card address list again? I think I sent you my new address but wanted to make sure because I think everyone has my old one.

Better get some things done. I have a meeting after church with the women's committee about the upcoming mission's conference and need to do a little research on local motel rates for the speaker. See you all later!

November 14, 2010 - Msg 81707: I’m right ‘chere, MDC. Sorry I haven’t been around for awhile (thanks for the APB, Tom)
I’ve just had too much stuff going on, I guess. I don’t really like to come to the porch with my troubles, so I kind of avoid it when I feeling down . Mostly, it’s my back again. I’ve mentioned I have scoliosis, and have dealt with that since I was 19. (although I was born with it, but I really didn’t have any problems until my late teen years) I have grown used to the occasional flare-up, probably a couple times a year where I do something that makes it go out; overwork in the garden, or sometimes just sitting too long at my desk without getting up and moving can make it go out. It’s just something that I’ve had to deal with and I know that when it is bad, that it will get good again eventually. Well, lately I’ve just had flare-up after flare-up, pretty much since September. When it does go out, it actually shows in the way I stand; for example my curve in my back is like a backward “S”, so when I stand up, and have both feet flat on the ground, I sway to the right. Basically, during a bad time, if I try to stand up straight, my right leg is about 5 inches shorter than the left. It is very painful to walk (I look like Chester…) I’ve never had it be so bad for so long before, and it’s very depressing. They’ve put me on a cane, and that seems to help a little, but I hate using it. But that’s enough about that. It feels better today.
Also, we have a good friend whose son is a race car driver. He was in a terrible wreck on October 30th in Las Vegas, and has extensive injuries. He is still in a coma, but it is a drug-induced coma that the doctors have done, because of his injuries. Broken leg, broken ribs, bruised lungs, broken arm, broken jaw, cheek, eye socket, vertebrae in the neck . He’s had several surgeries, and I believe they will be bringing him out of the coma soon. So that’s another reason I haven’t been on the porch; I have spent most of my computer time checking on his status and posting on his support group site.
Well, 10-4
- Hazel

Been a busy sunday around here for the most part. Church, then a meeting after church, then a little time to hang out at the house before taking the kids to a youth fellowship at a friend's house. I have GOT to make Sunday a day of rest again!

Think I will turn in early and read a bit before falling asleep. I will remember you all in my prayers of thanksgiving because you are all so precious to me.. love you all.

I can be in Asheville, NC in about 90 minutes and in Southwest VA in about 10 minutes. We are also about 90 minutes from the Smoky Mountains (Dollywood). It is a very beautiful mountain region. You will have to come visit!

Prayers for Boo's rehab girls tonight. Lord, may they all be filled with the gifts of your true, living Holy Spirit! Thank you!
MDC

November 15, 2010 - Msg 81715: Thanks for those prayers, MDC. It was, indeed a good night at the rehab. I was blessed more than anyone. Those girls just give me so much joy. I was with one hall, showing them a DVD called "Indescribeable" about God and the vast universe (really a good one) and one of the other girls snuck over from another hall, stuck her head in the door and said, "I love you Miss Julie!" and quickly fled before I could reciprocate but it just blessed my heart to hear her say it. Sweet girl named Gabby that has been there a long time. Tonight was just one of those special nights when you are aware of the Lord being at work.

Sounds like you live in a really nice area, Maude. I will say a prayer for Patrick and his broken heart...bless him. Hope there won't be too many before he finds the right girl.

I wanted to share a blessing with you concerning my Erin. Remember when we all called her "Baby Girl" and I was always filling you in on the mischief she was up to? Well, she is growing into a very devoted little child and is always singing a song about the Lord or I have caught her "preaching" in secret! haha...tonight when I went into her room to get her to bed, she had been reading her bible and said she was, "Having her time with God", and had just started reading the book of Luke and had found out that "Elizabeth had her baby, John, before Jesus was born". When I hear her say things like that I am so humbled because despite my many failures, God is working in the lives of my children in a wonderful way. I just can't thank Him enough. My prayers for all of our families, children and grandchildren here on the porch; may they be blessed and called by God. Love to All.

November 16, 2010 - Msg 81716: Good Tuesday Porch, raining again in my end of the porch, weatherman says 100% of rain today. not too cool though.

Patrick is doing better with his situation. Hopefully he is on his way to mending his broken heart. I tell him he has plenty of time and needs to grown into who he will become after college.

Better get to work. Breakfast menu will be: waffles, eggs, bacon, sausage, maple syrup. coffee, tea, chocolate milk.

Prayers and blessings to all

November 16, 2010 - Msg 81719: Good morning, porch!

November 16, 2010 - Msg 81720: Sorry, porch, that was me - Romeena. I'm on my DIL's laptop, and the keyboard is making me crazy. I don't even know how I entered that greeting once, let alone twice. I'm in Florida, having a wonderful time. One fun thing is stepping out the back door and picking a ripe, sweet tangerine off the tree. I'm supposed to pick a basketful today for my DIL to take to her hospital's food pantry. Evidently they're a big hit. They are really good.

The flight out here was a lot of fun. It took about five and a half hours, because we had to land in Tallahassee to pick up a friend of his, and then couldn't fly again for about half an hour because the Blue Angels were doing a show nearby and the area was a no-fly zone until they finished. My son's plane is very comfortable, and the way that prop just keeps biting off chunks of sky and forging ahead really inspires confidence. Of course, having complete confidence in my son is the most important thing, and I surely do. He's a very competent pilot.

We flew at 11,500 feet most of the way, and since light planes aren't pressurized, my ears promptly filled up and haven't opened yet! I can't hear diddly squat. Annoying. I hope they open soon. I'm a little hard of hearing anyway, and now I'm as deaf as a post.

Hazel, I'm so sorry to hear of your back problems. I have scoliosis myself, though apparently nowhere nearly as severe as yours. It does cause pain at times and prolonged sitting aggravates it, especially if I'm sitting in something like an office chair that doesn't offer a lot of support. I cannot imagine the discomfort you must have. I hope you feel better - very soon.

Well, I need to go pick tangerines, and I'm supposed to be making potato salad for dinner. so guess I'd better get busy. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Hello porch family....praise the Lord I made it back home. Great tour but sure glad to get home for a little while.

Had a wild ride coming through Alabama. My motorhome caught on fire while driving down the road. You talk about a wild ride. The fire dept said I set a field on fire about a half mile behind me so it was on fire for a while. A lot of damage but I'm just thankful I'm ok. Got a little burn under and above my right eye but it's going to be ok. Breathed in a lot of smoke but again it's going to be fine. The enemy sure wants to stop me but "Greater is HE that is in me than he that is in the world"!
Now I'm working with the ins#rance company trying to get things all worked out before my next long tour in January. I can get by without it in Nov and Dec but really need it for January. The shop told me today if we can come to a settlement they can have it repaired in about a month. Sure appriciate all your prayers as we get this settled.

Well gang I sure missed you folks but as always...you have been in my heart and prayers. You all have a great night and see ya tomorrow. I'm so ready to hit that bed.....night all.
Love and prayers
-REV.

November 17, 2010 - Msg 81725: Good morning~ Glad you made it home safely REV! So sorry about the mobile home and prayers for a quick settlement.

Sounds like Ro is having a good time.

Been busy as usual around here. I am very concerned for my sister in law, though. She just doesn't seem to be able to cut it in school. She is trying and spends hours and hours studying and doing assignments but she got a 39 on her last anatomy test and I just don't think she is going to pass it. Without two semesters of anatomy under her belt, she can't even get into the medical coding program. Now she is having to take a look at finding something else she can do and that isn't easy because of her hearing impairment. She can't really work in a job in which she is required to use the phone or dialogue with people much. Hear hearing problem is even worse than Bruce's. She was a cake decorator before she got her hand broken in the freezer door at the bakery where she worked two years ago. She can still do a limited amount of cake decorating but not enough to make a living. She is pretty negative and depressed right now. She has come a long way and is doing so much better but this trying to find a way to make it on her own is kicking her tail. A prayer for her would be appreciated...and for Bruce. Vicki tends to get on his nerves, I guess it is just a younger sister thing and she is little bit like Betty White's character on Golden Girls, if you get my drift. I like having her around for the most part and we get along ok but I don't think I want it to be a permanent thing.

Thanks for letting me vent a little. Better get Erin up for school. Love to All.

Boo

November 17, 2010 - Msg 81726: Mornin' Y'all! Still fighting off this sinus mess- yep, MDC, you may be right about needing antibiotics. I might have to visit the doctor yet.

Vent anytime, Boo. That's what we're here for.

Dang, Rev! Quit trying to burn down the South-didn't we already go through that once?? Ha Ha!
Seriously, I am glad you weren't hurt too badly in the bus fire. Hope you get everything straightened out soon.

Let's have pancakes this morning- Spot, pick everyone up and we'll eat at I-HOP!

Have a great day, Porchsters!

Boo, sorry to hear about your sister-in-law. Have her check out http://www.twc.state.tx.us/. Her taxes are paying for this service. This site will not only help her look for a job, but also inform her how to apply for unemployment benefits.

REV, so sorry to hear about the fire in you RV. Did you see just the smoke or flames? Was it inside the RV, or outside? Good to hear your insur@nce will cover this.

TOM, the rain during the fall season should not cause the little creek to overflow too far. I believe there is more danger during the spring season when the melting snow combines with the rain.
