Yes it was shocking to learn that Barbara Billingsley (the mother on Leave It To Beaver) has passed away at ag 94. I read an interesting fact about how she got hired for the "Leave It To Beaver" show. Apparently, a few months before the auditions, her second husband passed away very suddenly. To help her get on with life as she mourned his death, some friends (the writers of Leave It To Beaver) suggested that she try out for the part as the mother "June Cleaver". After two previous television show failures, her third television attempt was her best and most popular performance of her career.
Also, her television husband (Hugh Beaumont) passed away in 1982 at age 73.

October 17, 2010 - Msg 81397: Asa, you're right, there do seem to be several different opinions on the subject of Baptism. Back in the day when I was "searching", I found it kind of confusing. Depending on who you talked to, theirs was the "correct" opinion. I did it both ways, just to be on the safe side... :) It is kind of like the subject of the Trinity, as far as it depends on which Christian religion you attend, as to what they think the Bible says, or doesn't say regarding that.
So, I guess my opinion on Baptism would be, to quote Barney, No Opinion!

I was watching "The Bed Jacket" today, and wanted to comment on an inconsistency. In the beginning of the episode, when Andy and Opie are fishing, and Andy wants to hurry Opie along, but Opie wants to stay and fish. Andy says "... well, there's the cake to get." And Opie says "Cake? Yeah, I guess we better scoot." (They were talking about Aunt Bees birthday).
So anyway, in the epilogue, at the very end, and they are eating birthday cake, Aunt Bee commented on making the cake - she said to Opie "well, I didn't know if I should make a white one or a pink one or a chocolate, and I remembered that you liked chocolate so I made that." So that doesn't jive with the beginning when Andy and Opie were buying her a cake, because she made the cake herself.

Back to work and hopefully it will be a busy one. We took a trip to Asheville NC yesterday. It is only about a 90 minute drive. A beautiful fall day for our travels. Had a nice family day, looking at the fall colors, visted the Mast General Store, did a little shopping, had dinner and the home about 7pm.

Better get some breakfast ready: waffles with maple syrup, sausage, bacon, eggs, coffee, tea, juice, chocolate milk. someone please bring the paper.

So sad about Barbara Billingsley. She was a class act, and one of the last of the classic tv stars. I wish I was half the parent as Ward and June. Hugh Beaumont was a class act, too. I saw a "Biography" of him a few years ago. He was a Theology graduate and an ordained Methodist minister. He was devout, was a conscientious objector during WWII, and an active lay minister throughout his acting career. After he got the part of Ward, his family was traveling to California to join him and had a car accident in which his mother and young child were killed. He said that first year of the show was very difficlut for him.

Regarding baptism, it's very important no matter the means. I think the heart and the intent are the crux of it, not whether sprinkled or dunked. I think if the Lord wanted us to do it a certain way, he wouldn't have left it so open to interpretation.

AUH2O: Republicans, Democrats, Tea Partiers--a pox on all their houses. How does a Congress made up of people of different minds govern if not by compromise? If people think we have gridlock now, just wait until after this when we see a whole lot of lines in the sand and nobody walking.

Asa, I still have questions on baptism myself. I go to a Baptist church now, and the pastor is always talking about how baptism by immersion is the only correct way, and never on infants or little kids. And while I can see the rationale for that, I also question it. Like, when the disciples were going around "baptizing whole households"; you mean to tell me that no one had little kids or babies in those days? And that everyone had a tub, or a stream nearby to be immersed? A lot of these places were desert areas.
The Bible doesn't say they were all baptized, "except the babies and kids."
This might go against the grain of quite a few opinions here, but when I think about my life and my childhood now, and how I always had this sometimes overwhelming-and sometimes frustrating-sense of right and wrong, and how many times I was restrained in some areas, and comforted in bad times and in ways I did not understand at the time, that maybe I did indeed receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, poured into my life to guide me, when I was but a child.
Anyway, those are my thoughts on the matter. I don't think it matters how you were baptized, ...it is what you do with it.

And, when it comes down to it, if people like Sarah Palin aren't "populists" of a (very) different stripe, I don't know what she is. And the Tea Party movement is very much a populist, though conservative, movement. Tomato/tomata. And as far as angry, I see a lot of seething people on all sides of this issue. To them I say, take a chill pill ;-). Good jawing politics with you.

TR already had a long distinguished record of service before his election, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Governor Of New York, and then Vice-President before assuming the office. HM, Rapsberry's ears are doing great. One is kind of curling up and turning into goat jerky but no infection...kinda wishing she was a boy so we could change her name to "Slim Jim" (get it?...jerky?). Thanks for asking, she is starting to get her old personality back but I have to run her down to do anything to her ears.

Great to see you on the porch, Me-They!! That is so sad about Hugh Beuamont losing a child that first year on LITB.

Here's another thing about that gold truck episode that bugs me...what happened to all the gasoline Gomer pumped into the truck and all over Barney?...It evaporated in about 10 seconds.

I hear you, HM, about uncertainty. I just found out from the church secretary that our church is 9,000 dollars in the hole. There goes my budget for the girls at the rehab. I think I have 300.00 I can spend and will spend that on some warmer clothes for them, along with taking up an offering in my sunday school class. The secretary said tithes have been way down but folks just keep spending money that isn't there. people are hurting financially and it is going to mean tightening up on the spending everywhere.

Last night i took a bunch of chicken and dumplings to the rehab (one of the girls had requested it...she has been there for a year). You would have thought it was Christmas! I don't think I have ever seen them as excited about anything and they finished off two gallons of the stuff within 20 minutes (and that was only one group of about 8 girls). I am seeing some very good things happening in that particular group of girls. Thanks again for your prayers. The girl I mentioned who's mother had overdosed was there last night and I got ready to go, she said, "Wait, I want to give you something"..she went to her room and came back with a dried-up pink rose, wrapped in tape. She said, "We don't have much to give here but I want you to have this". Wow, she has no idea what it meant to me. I just love those kids so much.

Better go put the clothes in the dryer and start another load.

And I agree, Boo, it always seemed so dumb that all that gas was poured all over Barneys feet, and seems to disappear very quickly. Also, if I remember correctly, it seems like I read someplace where Rance Howard wasn't originally in that episode, someone else played the part, and had to leave or something, so they used Rance to replace him, and it's one of the "bloopers" from the series. I wish I could remember where I read that.

MDC and Auh2o, I have not really been following Christine O'Donnell all that much, other than to hear all the typical haters bashing on her. That usually tells me a lot about who she is. Ain't that a shame. You can usually know who somebody is (politically speaking) just based on who is dissing them.

O.K. Here is a question for all you trained noticers out there. The street in front of the Taylor's home. Was it paved or not? I really can't tell. You would think so but there are several episodes where you see a car pull up with a huge cloud of dust suggesting otherwise. Maybe it was and they just need to sweep it more. I don't know, but it's been weighing on my mind lately. :)

They are saying today will be the last of the real nice weather for us for a while. It is supposed to start raining tomorrow, with a much colder front coming in on Monday morning with possible snow on the valley floor. You know what that means, don't you? Break out the cheese cause Asa's about to break out the whine. Oh well. Guess you gotta have some cold and snow to really appreciate the sun and warmth. "There must needs be opposition in all things".

Can you imagine what the inside of those cars must have looked like with all that dust and no windshields? LOL I'm sure y'all have noticed most of the vehicles in Mayberry had no windshields!

Hey Romeena, welcome home. Glad you had fun on the cruise. Did you talk to Alan? How about the Rev. I'm sure the concert was good. You've had yourself quite a Mayberry kind of week.

HM, I was in the FFA when I was in high school. They called all us FFAers Goat Ropers back then. That pre-dated the term "redneck" that is used today I reckon. I'm sure it was said with love. :) How's Casey doing? Well I hope.

Well we have one vote for paved, and one for unpaved. Anyone else wanna chime in on this earth shattering topic? HA! MDC, I wish that was all that was weighing on my mind. Would be nice if that's all we had to worry about. But there is much more. For example next week I plan on asking who was responsible for running the hot water line to the public drinking fountain during the Lawson years. A scandel that has never been fully resolved in my mind at least. Graft and corruption I tell you that was swept under the rug. Well no more!

October 22, 2010 - Msg 81449: Hi ASA! :-) It's just been a busy day but all is well. Can you believe it is going to get up to almost 90 here this afternoon? Yuck. Did I tell you how nice it has been to have you back on the porch again more often, you old "goat roper" (spoken affectionately, of course:-).

I won't be lollygagging around this weekend so my end should be rather strong by Monday. ;-) I have to help drive some kids from church to the Six Flags in San Antonio tomorrow...PRAY for me!!!

Have an old school friend coming over this afternoon..he is in town for the weekend and wants to see me and my baby goats. I made a homemade chocolate pie (his favorite). Wish you could all join us.

Better get back to the chores.

It is so bad that the vicodin doesn't even touch it. If anyone has any suggestions - I would appreciate. It was so bad he was in tears this morning. It takes a lot to make an almost 14 year old cry.

October 23, 2010 - Msg 81457: Hey, folks! Been really busy since getting home, what with REV being here, an unexpected and lovely visit from my daughter and her friend Richard. Richard, by the way, brought with him a replacement ashtray assembly for my car (you'll remember I mentioned that it fell out and the Cadillac house wanted $390 to fix it), and he installed it today - looks like new! Bless his sweet heart! He was driving a beautiful Can Am, which he restored himself - one of (I think) 73 in existence. Beautiful car!

Thanks, Poor Horatio, for posting that link to the cruise pictures. Aren't they good?? I don't know who took them, but they obviously had a very good camera and they definitely know how to use it. Great shots! #129 is Eloise and I at our table in the dining room. I'm on the left, the one with the gray hair. The two pictures before that one, and the two after are the folks who were at our table. Everyone except the younger couple were with us last year too. The youngsters were a fun addition, very nice couple and we enjoyed them. We're all planning to go next year, and have asked Sharon, our cruise planner, to put us together again. Nice folks, good company! You can see from the pictures what fun and nonsense goes on, and believe me, it's well worth the price.

You asked about the real "Romeena" - yes, Jackie Joseph was with us, and she is delightful. Very gracious, down-to-earth, lovely lady. I got a picture of her as "Romeena", which she very kindly signed for me, and also got to visit with her several times. I asked her if she really jumped over that stump with Ernest T, and she said yes, she really did. She said her skirt caught on the stump on the first try, and she fell flat, face down. She said she was a little scraped and bruised, but they cleaned her up, put a little makeup over the spots, and she did the jump again, without mishap the second time. What a trooper! It was a real privilege and a pleasure to meet her. The picture will be framed and added to my "Mayberry wall".

REV's concert last night went very well. He's so good! Everyone really enjoyed it, and he will definitely be asked back, if he can squeeze us in. Eloise and I had lunch with him today, before he had to leave for his concert in Mansfield tonight. He's such good company, has so many interesting stories to tell, and is such a kind and pleasant man, a real gentleman. I feel so blessed, with this "Mayberry connection", which has given me the opportunity to meet and get to know so many great folks. Oh, and yes, Asa, I visited with our own Floyd several times. He and his lovely Jan are great company, fun to be with, and always a pleasure. There's something about those Mayberry men - they all seem to be such gentlemen. God is good.

Just use Google and search for "Can Am Car". If it brings up the same choices that I found, the top one should be three pictures of cars. The one on the right, with a big red hill as a background, looks identical to the car that Richard has restored. It's exactly like the one he's driving, original color, decals, red leather interior, etc. Beautiful thing. --Romeena

October 23, 2010 - Msg 81468: Good afternoon, porch. Awww, Boo, you're too kind. Thanks for the sweet comments - you make me feel so good! At my age, it's nice to hear that any feature, however small, is still holding up when everything else is showing the effects of the years. Yes, I've let my hair get a little longer. It will never be "long" (I grew it out once, and you can't imagine how scary-looking that is) but it is easier to handle if it's not too short. At the length it is now, I can just wash it, apply a bit of gel or something, comb it into place and let it dry. Once in a while, it needs a curling iron in a couple of spots, but mostly it just does its own thing. As for color, I don't plan to go there. Too much trouble, and very hard to stop.

Yes, the time spent with REV was really great. He's one of the easiest people to be around that you'll ever meet. Genuine, unpretentious, kind and funny, and really loves the Lord. A real pleasure.

PH, that is indeed the car. Thank you! It's identical to the one Richard has restored. Really beautiful. Now, how does that "tinyurl" thing work? How do you apply it to the URL you're wanting to paste?

Regarding the cruise ship, it has a small miniature golf course on board, not regular golf. I think for real golf, many a ball would hit the ocean, and that's quite a water hazard. There are palm trees, but they're not real, they're artificial. Pretty, though. We did have some bad weather, though it never got very rough. We were supposed to have a day at an island called Half Moon Cay, which is owned by Carnival, and is run solely to entertain the guests. Beautiful sugar-sand beach, gorgeous water, clamshell sunshades with lounge chairs, and tanned kids who patrol the area delivering sodas and other drinks. Lunch is served in a beautiful pavilion, set back in the shade of the palms and other flora on the island. We visited the island on the first cruise we went on in 2008, but our stop there was rained out this year. It was pouring, and while the rough water wasn't bad enough to bother the big old ship, it would have been dangerous to transport guests from the ship to the island on the tenders, so the stop was canceled. They routed us to Freeport instead, and it was quite nice. Pretty little island, friendly people, heavy Christian influence that is felt even in conversation with shopkeepers. Refreshing. I didn't buy much, but did get a very lovely conch shell for just $3 - big one, with gorgeous deep-rose coloring inside. I managed to get it home without breaking it, and it will join my other shells that are displayed in my guest bathroom. Pretty thing.

Well, guess I'll go scout up some lunch. Or not, since it's so late. Maybe I'll just skip it, and think toward dinner tonight. I ate so much on the cruise that it won't hurt me one bit to miss a few meals for the next few days. I gained three pounds, and I definitely didn't need to do that. Got to work on losing about forty! Yuck.

Well, I just popped in to see what was happening. Have a funeral to go to tomorrow so I'd better go get my stuff together. The person who passed was my godmother, and she was the sweetest, most God-fearing person you could meet. Her son is exactly the same way and is now a deacon at their church. Anyway, he asked me to be a pall-bearer, which I have never been before, so this will be a new thing for me. Hopefully this rain we have been having will clear up for tomorrow and will be a pleasant, or as pleasant as a funeral can be, day for all.

It was a busy weekend so didn't get the chance to come by the porch often. Hopefully things will slow down some later in the week. I survived Six Flags and surprisingly, while some of the other adults practically had to be carried from the park at the end of the evening, I didn't have so much as a sore foot. I guess I am in better shape than I thought from all the chores I have to do around here. I am used to being on my feet alot but I think what really helped was that I was wearing these Nike flip=flops that have this great cushiony sole. Love the things.

Better get going and get Erin up for school. Lots of catching up to do after the busy weekend and have drug rehab with the girls tonight. Be back later on my coffee break. :-)

Sterling, the lesson went well, thanks for asking. I got a lot of feedback from the class, lot's of responses and interaction. So I did more facilitating than teaching I reckon. Sorry to read about the loss of your Godmother, but as Boo said, what an honor to be a pall bearer for her. Prayers for good weather and a spirit of joy for a life well lived and a celebration of a reunion at the service.

Glad you survived 6 flags Boo. I felt the same way a couple of weeks ago when we went to Disneyland. The Grandkids had fun, but dang that place is a money hole! Anyway, hope things calm down for you so you can visit more. We miss you when you're not here. That goes for all you infrequent posters (Hazel). :)

Hey Frankie, you excited for the series to begin? It's nice to see some new teams in there (well at least the Rangers)

Well we are seeing the first bit of snow flurries on my porch this morning. I don't think it will amount to much down here on the valley floor, but the mountains are expecyed to get 2 feet of snow by Tuesday morning. All the skiers are happy. I ain't! Oh well.
