September 30, 2010 - Msg 81147: Aww, too bad about Tony Curtis. I was like him, even as a child.

No Asa, Bruce has been working ALOT of overtime on a special project at work and he is worn out between that and caring for things on the place. He will talk to her, though when he can.

JM, Casey is Homemaker's teenaged son who recently had foot surgery. I know what you mean about those bad hearing aids. Bruce's are really shot at this point. This morning I was trying to talk to him on his phone (his hearing aid has a phone switch) and I needed to relay a message from someone named "Charles"...he kept asking me, "What? I can't understand you...did you say Ty?..." so I keep repeating the name Charles in as many imaginative ways as possible to help him get it. Spelling it didn't work, either. I finally hung up and emailed him. We have ALOT of the conversations and the kids think its hilarious. I guess it doesn sound pretty funny if you are the one listening to me try to talk to him on the phone.

Been to Walmart and still some groceries to put away so better scram.

September 30, 2010 - Msg 81150: Hey PH, you worked with McMahon huh? Guess what. I played High School football and baseball with him. Well in my senior year. His family moved to Utah when he was a junior I believe. Heck of a competitor in all sports. The kind of guy you want on your team in terms of winning, but was always quite coc-ky and arrogant, even back then. With Jim, what you see is what you get. Some folks think it's cool but his antics got old with me pretty quick. Too bad really because I think he could have played longer in the NFL. But I think his mouth made him a big target with a lot of defensive types. I know the very late hit he took in a Green Bay game destroyed his shoulder. He just never had the same zip on his passes after the surgery. Anyway, it's a small world, huh?

Yea JM. I agree our rivalry ain't what it once was, but it will be back. Once our teams get back to winning. I think the donkeys are gonna be down for a few years, and I have never thought as the Chargers as being much of a threat since the Coryall era. And I agree with your comments about Cossell. His halftime highlites were a blast. And the banter with him and Merridith was priceless, with Don almost always coming out on top. I remember a game in Houston when the oilers were getting creamed. It was near the end of the game and most of the crowd had left. The camera zoomed in on one Oiler fan sitting alone in the end zone seats, when the gut noticed he was on tv flipped the bird. Don Merridith pipes up with that Texas drawl, "there you go Howard, another fan that thinks your number 1". Hah! I still laugh when I think of that. Howard had no response. Great memories.

Hey Folks

Boo-Thanks for the kind words and that quote was from "A Christmas story" also.

Asa-I really loved that old Raiders team, criminals and talent seems to work for the NFL. haha!
About the old sport days. There was one time a buddy and I went to a Braves game. Anyone remember the Buffalo Braves? Well, we were about 15, I think. My buddy's dad dropped us off at the Aud and we made our way in. We had no idea where our seats were so we asked an attendant. He must have noticed that we were a couple hayseeds, for sure. Our seats were in the Orange section, the nosebleed section. But he, and this is the absolute truth, took us over past the Knicks bench, behind it actually. He then pulled open a couple of sturdy wooden folding chairs and told us these were our seats. I mean WOW!! We were inches from Walt Frazier, Earl Monroe, Dave Debusshere, Willis Reed, Jerry Lucas, and Phil Jackson. Unbelievable! We spoke to a couple of them at half-time too. That attendant was an off duty Buffalo cop who worked security back then. Here was this guy, didn't know us from Adam, giving us the time of our life. Ya know, this isn't important (I don't know maybe it is) but he was a black man, just a giant of a man, a cop, doing something nice for a couple of skinny white boys from the sticks. That has always stuck with me, the racial overtones and the generosity that guy showed us.

Peace and prayers,

I bought some candy I really don't need to eat - maybe I'll take some of it to work with me tonight.

Speaking of which - I'd better go catch a nap. I've been up since before 7, and will not see my bed again until about 9 tomorrow morning, unless I catch a few winks right now. Makes for a long and tiresome night, when you're that sleepy. A nap really helps.

This is way more recent, but I loved the combination of Dan Patrick and Keith Olberman on ESPN SportsCenter. I had to get my fill of their schtick and sayings!
Olberman: "From way downtown...BANG!" and "They're....not....gonna....get em'!"

Despite a dynamite-munching goat, kerosene pickles and the occasional citizen’s arrest, Mayberry’s boundaries have held up extraordinarily well.

Still in syndication and airing daily on cable’s TV Land, "The Andy Griffith Show" has proven to be one of the most durable in the history of television, a medium where program lifespans are often measured in weeks, and lives on as a timeless influence in popular culture.

October 01, 2010 - Msg 81175: Good afternoon, friends. Long night at work, came home just beat to the socks, fell into bed around nine and just got up, nearly four p.m! Guess I was really tired. Gotta get busy, playing bunco tonight, need to leave in less than an hour, and I'm not even dressed.

Russel Stover candy is gooood candy! The outlet store has already slightly reduced prices, and since we were a busload, we got an additional 10% discount. I bought a couple of one-pound "sampler" boxes and a few little "taster" things. It will take me until next year to eat it, because I limit myself to just a piece of it now and then. I make a big production of it, nibbling at the chosen piece, takes me about ten minutes to eat one. Yum!

REV, will you have the new pistol with you when you get here? I'd like to see it. I know what you mean about "sweet-feeling". My Judge is quite heavy, especially for a woman's hand, but it's so well balanced that I really don't notice the weight. I learned the value of that weight the first time I fired it. It has a significant recoil, but the weight helps me manage it.

Boo, Dale and I used to haunt Canton every First Monday weekend, many years ago. I haven't been in a long time, certainly not since his passing, and actually for several years before that. It has gotten so huge and sprawling that you can't possibly see the whole thing in a day, and they've put a lot of it indoors now, so it has lost some of that old "country" feeling it used to have. That was my impression the last time I was there, I can't imagine what it's like now. If you decide to go, it will definitely be a "destination" - it's not something you can just drop in on, on the way to something else.

Maudie, you didn't miss anything - I don't think I mentioned it. I really don't have any word yet. He drew a lot of blood and ran another of those 24-hour collections, which I turned in on Tuesday, and haven't received any results yet. He said if things are improved, or even just stable, he won't want to see me for another six months. So, we'll see. I think he's leaning toward it being just age and mileage, rather than some sort of exogenous damage. He still says my diabetes isn't a factor, and my blood pressure has never been high enough to cause a problem. Thanks for asking, I appreciate it.

Hazel, that's wonderful news! There's just nothing quite so much fun as a grandchild. You can love on 'em, play with 'em, maybe spoil 'em a bit, then hand 'em back to their parents when they get cranky! (heehee)

Hey to Frankie! So it's cooling down on your farm, is it? Where 'bouts is that farm?

Well, guess I'd better go get dressed. I have to pick up Eloise in about 45 minutes. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

Had a really nice visit with Bruce's Aunt Marilyn and her husband yesterday evening. Good food and good fellowship. Very Mayberry-ish, sitting around the table having coffee and homemade apple pie and just enjoying each other's company.

Had our church's 30th anniversary celebration today and it was great!~I kept thinking I didn't want to go but I had to help out with the greeting and giving people name tags. We had some folks return that attended years ago and some I had not seen in years. We had a big BBQ supper (really good), some singing, some history on how the church started and some folks sharing fond memories of the church. It really was a lovely time and a blessing. My little girl just turned 10 on the 21st. But we had her party on the 25th. She had a sleepover on Friday night and then the party on Saturday. Since her school is kind of like a one-room schoolhouse with different grades using the same classroom, we had all different ages sleeping over. In all there were 7 girls that she had invited to the sleepover part of it, and ALL of them accepted, so we had 8 little girls in all of varying ages screaming all over the house.
Actually they weren't as noisy as I had feared though. And Kai had a great time.

October 03, 2010 - Msg 81191: To #81189 - I'm jealous! What a lovely thing to do on this significant day. I'd like to visit that museum on any old day, but it's really neat to go today. Enjoy!

It's beautiful here, only 63 cool and pleasant degrees at just before noon. The skies are just lightly cloudy - you know, those filmy, gauzy clouds that don't shade anything, they just add beauty to the skies. There's a very light occasional breeze, just enough to ruffle the leaves now and then, and it's just soooo pretty out there!

Jorge did such a great job of pumping the sludge off the bottom of the pond. The water is crystal clear -if there was a dime on the bottom, you could easily tell if it was heads or tails, in 2 1/2 feet of water! The fish are ecstatic, and so am I, because I'm only having to wash the filter box out every three days, instead of every day. As the water cools down, that time will extend to at least a week, maybe two. That'll be nice.

I have surprise lilies everywhere. They're just the most fun flowers! Joe and Jorge, at my request, planted them while I stayed in the house, because I didn't want to know where they were. Now I'm truly "surprised" when little clumps of red firecracker flowers appear in unexpected places. They will multiply and naturalize, and what fun they are! They come in white, yellow, pink and most of all, red. Known by many names - surprise lily, resurrection lily, naked lily, spider lily and others - their botanical name is Lycoris. Just Google any of those names, and you'll find a world of information. I bought a few of mine, in colors other than red, but most of my red ones came from my SIL, where they had "naturalized" out into the lawn! She said to come and take whatever I wanted, so I did! So far, all that has bloomed this year are the red ones, haven't seen the other colors yet. That may be because the other colors were purchased, therefore had a longer drying-out period before I got them planted. They may not bloom until next year. The ones I got from my SIL were back in the ground within a couple of days of being dug up, and still had moist soil on them. Anyway, for those of you in a warm climate, if you want something fun and showy in your garden, try surprise lilies.

Well, guess I'd better go find some lunch, then see if I can sleep for a couple of hours, as I have to work tonight. Yuck. I hate working on Sunday night, but it beats working on Saturday night. At least I get to go to church on Sunday morning. Blesings, friends! --Romeena

Due to the "new plans" for our women's department, nursery has already lost several of their staff, will be losing more, and we will be losing several as well, probably including me. I do hope the big mama of us all, whose idea this is, has a uniform in her closet. She's going to need it.

This is one more example of how "change" isn't necessarily always an improvement. Blessings! --Romeena

October 03, 2010 - Msg 81195: That is about the neatest thing, Romeena...having those lillies planted in unexpected places...fun! Of course, don't know if the dogs would leave them alone (or the goats and donkey). Speaking of dogs, thanks PH for sending me the training information via Romeena. I appreciate it and have read it. Right now I am researching my options but will likey try the training method you suggested, thanks. We had an episode yesterday in which they dug out and were chasing the baby goats which were with mom grazing in the yard. They both took out chasing one of the babies and Bruce ran out there to get the babies put up. The dogs wouldn't listen to him and he did his share of yelling and trying to get the dogs away from the goat babies. I wasn't there at the time but heard about it later. Bruce has yelled out them alot and only confused them and they don't listen to him anymore. I told him today that I am taking over the dogs, totally. I will feed them, keep them put up or exercise them whatever they need and spend time with them each day. I have been trying out some of the methods the Dog Whisperer teaches and they are working but I always remain calm and the dogs respond to that very quickly and calm down. I have taught them to sit on command and look at me for clues. I am going to work with them alone for now because at this point they are just confused by Bruce. When I approach them calmly, they come to me and pay attention to what I am communicating to them. They are darned good dogs and I know investing the time in them will be worth it. It had been so tough, though, juggling all these animals, keeping the dogs from terrorizing the neighbors or hurting the babies, and keeping the babies safe from the hawk! I will be very happy when they are bigger but I sure have been enjoying them...they are so much fun to watch. Today one of the babies (Chuck) was really wanting to climb everything and had learned to jump on and off the rocking chair. Well, I came outside and sat down in the chair and it wasn't long until Chuck was jumping square in the middle of my lap trying to climb ME! So funny. Homemaker, if you are reading this, my mama goat seems to have started bleeding the last couple of days, not alot but I don't know why she started up like that. She seems fine, though.

Ro, the few times I got pulled to the nursery at night were miserable because the would hand me babies to feed and sitting there rocking them, it was SO hard to stay awake! Hope you do ok.

Had a young couple from the church over today. They are 22 and 23 and just got married in August. They were so sweet and we ate some great ribs that she brought over and just visited all day. I just love doing that on a sunday.

Better get ready for bed...been a full but blessed weekend.

Hope you had a great day, Frankie.

October 03, 2010 - Msg 81196: By the way, a funny visual for you all...yesterday my SIL Vicki decided that she was going to wash the mama goat's back end and of course, the goat wanted absolutely no part of it, so I got some carrots for her and lured her over to where Vicki was with the water hose and the dishwashing liquid! As soon as the water touched her, she bolted so I grabbed hold of her horns and tried to hold her while Vicki gave her backside a quick scrub. That goat went wild..trying to flip in mid-air! We must have been a site..me wrestling that goat and Vicki scrubbing her backside. Wish someone had been taking pictures. The things we find ourselves doing that we never thought we would do!

Guess I was about 1 1/2 years old when it debuted so I like everyone else on the porch have grown up loving Mayberry. Good way to spend my week end.

Busy week ahead. Beth is on fall break this week so I will take Friday off.

Breakfast menu will be: scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, toast, biscuits, english muffins, fresh fruit. apple butter, jelly. sliced tomatoes. coffee, white or chocolate milk, tea, orange juice. SPOT can fetch the paper for us.

Better get to work.
Prayers and blessings to all today.

Hello porch family......oh boy it's so nice and cool today. Love it!

The Braves game with the family was so fun yesterday. They kinda had me worried in the 8th and 9th but they held on for the win. Play-off bound. YES

MDC...you're right, it's going to be different without the Skipper......Bobby Cox

Serling....I remember those sleepover days with Erica. House fun of girls running around being silly. Of course I loved every minute of it. Since we live out in the country, they would love to play hide and seek outside at night. They always wanted me to join in because I would know all the "good" places to hide.lol Those were very special times. Enjoy them brother!

I'll check in a little later.
Love and prayers!

October 04, 2010 - Msg 81202: Good afternoon, porch. I slept most of the day, have to go back to work tonight. Last night wasn't bad, could have been much worse. I only had three babies to care for, and one of them stayed with her mom all night. The other two were in and out of the nursery - moms calling for the baby to be brought out, fifteen minutes later calling for a pickup - back and forth, back and forth. 'Bout wore me out, but as I said, it could have been worse. I could have had five babies! Oh well, tonight I'll probably be back in my comfort zone. Or not.

Boo, you have really got your hands full with critters. I hope you can get it under control before there's a disaster, with a dog harming a baby goat, or a furious mama stomping a dog. I know lots of folks love their big dogs, and honestly, I love 'em too, but I look at my tiny little Toye Starr and count my blessings, quite often. I know yours were rescues, and God bless you for that, but it just goes to prove the old adage - "No good deed goes unpunished." (heehee)

Well, guess I'd better get ready for work. The phone didn't ring, so apparently there's no cancellations available. Oh well - the check will look better, and I can certainly use it.

Blessings, everyone. --Romeena

October 04, 2010 - Msg 81207: Hey ya'll - I picked up a southern accent this weekend being in South Carolina. Flew out Friday afternoon for a goat show on Saturday in Orangeburg and left to come back home at 5:30 on Sunday morning. I should have picked up a Charlotte paper Sunday morning at the airport - didn't think about it.

Casey is down to about one pain killer a day. He goes to the doc on Wednesday and will probably get his hard cast on that day.

I am trying to catch up with the archives.

hm

October 04, 2010 - Msg 81208: Thanks for the encouragment, Romeena...NOT! HAHAHA...yep, I'm up to my eyeballs in critters and I already have enough to do. Wish you could see those baby goats. I have never seen any living creatures grow as fast. They are visibly larger each day. They are just the cutest things in the world! They have been so much fun for us to watch and play with. They will climb on anything they can find, including humans.

You know, not long ago I just wanted to get rid of those dogs but since PH made me realize what could happen if I trained them, I see alot of really good qualities in them and they are fast learners. I think they will be really good dogs if we continue to spend alot of time with them, working with them. I spent hours with them today and saw alot of improvements. I am learning to understand the dog's clues and what works with them. Pretty amazing at times.

Now, on a brighter note, there is always my sweet donkey Thelma Lou..she is my favorite critter, ever. I just love that old thing. She is always predictable, she follows me and just stands next to me wanting an arm around her neck or a scratch. Adorable animal!

For those of you that were so concerned about the needs of the girls at the rehab, just wanted to let you know that I talked to the supervisor of the unit tonight and got a list of things they could use and will be making some purchases this week. They will be getting some things that they need. Thank you for your prayers and I am happy to report that the girl I mentioned who's mom had a drug overdose is doing fine and her mom pulled through, although she is in jail at this time.

Better get ready for bed...been a long day and evening.

Hey Folks

We have 100% humidity this morning. Of course, it was only 38 degrees. It's a wet cold, as opposed to MDC's dry heat.

PH-I saw on the news this morning that a truck load of pigs tip over near Toronto, isn't that your part of the Great white North?

Speaking of the news, I see that the terrorist threat is heightened in Europe. I thought B.O. canceled the "War on Terror." I'm confused. I gotta say I've being praying for our President. He just seems in over his head.

"Ah, breaker,
Pigpen this here's the Duck and you wanna back off on them hogs?"

October 05, 2010 - Msg 81214: Hey Boo - did I forget to mention that goats HATE getting wet. Guess that wasn't in the memo I sent you! Hahahaha So glad you got into the goat game. Now you see why they are so addictive.

Frankie.....did you get some lipstick from Ellie? If she didn't give you any just tell Emma...she's pretty good at sneeking in the drug store:)

Boo....praying Sean's cold is better.

You all have a great day today. I've got a busy day getting things done around here. Hoping to spend a couple hours writing (song) and it's also time for me to donate blood again. So let me get going.

October 05, 2010 - Msg 81216: Good morning, porch. Home from work, another long night, and I'm on my way to bed. At least I don't have to work tonight.

Boo, I'm really proud of you, the way you're doing all you can to give those dogs every chance. I have no doubt that you'll succeed, and you'll have some fine guardians eventually. Not everyone would have the patience that you've shown, and I commend you for it. As I said, I love big dogs. One daughter has a golden retriever, one has a yellow lab, youngest son (David) has dear old Bentley at about 45 lbs, and used to have an English mastiff, at 210 lbs. Florida son has a spaniel (not really a big dog) and then there's my tiny mite at 4.5 lbs. We pretty well cover the spectrum, I guess, and I love them all. Each one has his or her place in the grand scheme of things.

Well, my bed calls. I've got so much pain in my back and left ribs right now that I can't sit still, and I've got to lie down. Now. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

October 05, 2010 - Msg 81220: Good Afternoon Porch!
How is everyone doing? I've missed everyone. My ankle is still healing from the surgery. It was a major surgery, a lot like the one Homemaker's son endured. The pain is much, much better. My only issue is swelling when I put it down. I hope to be out of the wheelchair and onto the crutches in a week or so.
I was so excited it was TAGS 50th Anniversary on Sunday. It is still my favorite show!
Y'all take care and have a great week. I just wanted to check in while I'm up at the computer.
Blessings to you and yours,

October 05, 2010 - Msg 81223: Sure was Possum - Saturday was kids day. That would have been so cool to have met you and Miss Laci! Great BBQ and Elephant ears !

hm

October 05, 2010 - Msg 81224: Ooooo! Elephant ears! I love 'em!

Wow, hm and Possum. That would have been great if you two could have met. Reminds me of the day Boo and I spent together in Fredericksburg a few years ago. We had a great time - and it seems that some "elephant ears" (funnel cakes) were a part of that day, too.

Lucy, it's great to see you. I'm glad your recovery is going well - wow, wheelchair huh? That's some big-time recovery process, isn't it? Hope you're up and runnin' real soon.

Welcome to any visitors and "lurkers" we may have around the porch these days. Don't sit back there in the shadows like Boo Radley (no relation to our Boo), come on out and join us. There's always room for one more.

Well, I planned on just a short nap this afternoon, after working last night, but slept nearly six hours. I couldn't help myself, that bed felt so comfy, and little Starr was nestled up close, so warm and relaxed and sweet, I just kept on a-nappin'! Now I probably will stay up very late. It's a vicious circle.

Now, about supper -- how 'bout some whole-wheat sandwich thins, topped with some cheddar cheese, sliced tomato with salt and pepper, and thin-sliced sweet onion on top, toasted under the broiler? A couple of slices of bacon wouldn't hurt it any, but I'm out. Oh well, it will still be good. Come on by, I'll make plenty!

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

October 05, 2010 - Msg 81225: Wow, sounds like a good supper, Ro. I had leftover spaghetti.

Lucy, glad to hear your ankle is mending from the surgery.

auh2o, yes the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) is where I hang out when I'm north of the border. However, I just left there a few weeks ago and I'm back in the USA for now. So I haven't heard about the pig truck accident that you mentioned.

October 06, 2010 - Msg 81230: Morning porch. Its a nice, cool 60 degrees here in south texas and yesterday was about as perfect as weather gets. I spent alot of time outide last evening just enjoying it...watching the baby goats play. They are some funny little critters. We are still having some problems with the dogs but things are better.

I kind of had a restful day yesterday. Got a little laundry done but mostly did what i wanted and actually watched some Bette Davis movies on TCM. My tv viewing is still very limited but I needed a day off and I love B Davis movies. I saw one yesterday that I had not seen, though and I thought it was good. It was called "The Scapegoat" about a brittish schoolmaster who travels to Spain, I think and comes face to face with his look-a-like, who drugs him and switches identities with him. The schoolmaster steps into another man's life and problems and begins to make changes for the better but then the plot thickins..ha...if you ever have a chance to see it, I think you will enjoy it.

See ya at Waffle House, SPOT.
