September 27, 2010 - Msg 81070: Good morning, porch!! Just got home from work, bone-tired but rejoicing because I don't have to return until Thursday night.

And guess what! Come on, guess! Aww, just guess! It's 53 degrees here right now!! That's a five and a three. I can't believe it! It's absolutely beautiful outside. Sky is as clear as blue crystal, dew is sparkling like diamonds everywhere, all the foliage is still emerald green, I have some roses blooming, and my "surprise lilies" are surprising me all over the yard. What fun those things are!

I guess I won't get much rest today, but that's okay. I'm due at a doctor's office in less than an hour, so no use lying down for a nap. Then I have to attend a funeral at church at 1 p.m. - might get an hour or two in between there, might not. Doesn't really matter, because I don't have to work tonight.

Boo, I had to laugh at the idea of you sitting out on the back porch with the cat, of all things. And then to get chased in the house by a loud rooster - that's just too funny! Personally, I love to hear a rooster crow, and can't ever remember being annoyed by one, but I suppose it could happen. We had one that had an abbreviated crow. You know how they sound (here goes): Er-er-er-er-errrrrr! Well, Rusty said Er-er-er! Er-er-er! He never got that last er-errrrr to come out. Hilarious!

Hazel, I'm so jealous. I planted three beefsteak tomatoes, and so far, I've picked two tomatoes - one about the size of a golf ball, one a little smaller, and both split. I haven't pulled the vines up, though. Now that the weather has changed, maybe I'll get a few anyway. Nothing like a vine-ripened tomato. Speaking of which, my friend Suzanne introduced me to a new flavor combination, and is it ever good! She lightly toasted some whole wheat sandwich thins, or you could just use whole wheat bread. Spread the toast with peanut butter (not too thickly), put a nice slice of a fresh tomato on it, sprinkle with lemon-pepper, then add two or three slices of fried bacon (we had some bacon left over from the day before). Stick it all under a broiler just long enough to warm the bacon through if it's not freshly fried, and let the peanut butter melt slightly. Yum! I know, it sounds weird, even I thought so, and I'll eat anything, but trust me, this is really good.

OK, I'm off to the nephrologist, to find out if my kidneys are behaving themselves any better than they were. Hope so. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

That is too funny about the rooster, Ro! haha Glad you are off for a few days. Have fun in this glorious weather. On the way to school we had our windows down and Erin had her face stuck out the window like a dog and she said "I've been set free!"...and that's exactly what it feels like...being set free from the horrid heat and humidity of the past 6 months! I will be outside ALOT today...got to let those goats out to graze on the fresh grass (and keep an eye on the hawk), then the dogs need to roam. Better git!

ROMEENA - Here's to the health of your kidneys! Prayers for you all around! I have dealt with kidney stones not once, not twice, but thrice and I have watched myself to take care of them. Stones seem to run through my family. Sometimes I go down to Wally's station and have a little too much pop. I need to cut that out, dontcha reckon?! The rooster is a hoot. I am not much particular to them though. I had a friend that owned a mean rooster and it would attack constantly. I had my share of talons to the knees and calves. OUCH!

I want to thank all of you who weighed in on my emotional struggles. I have lost ALL, and I do mean all, of my friends from days past. My whole family (aunts, uncles, cousins, etc) is spread out from here to doomsyday and I only have my father, mother, grandmother and wife around me. That's it. Period. I have "acquaintances" but no friends at all. No pals, friends, buddies, etc. I have been surrounded by friends my entire life and then....POOF! Gone. My wife and I are also...well, not stuck, but JAMMED into a routine. We have no "couple" friends or anything and it's pretty much the exact same thing EVERY single day we breathe. I know...I should be thankful for the day and that I have the gift from God to breathe in and of itself. But I think I am just having a hard time adjusting to life as I know it and missing what was. Your thoughts, advice and kindness gives me a smile and makes me wish our porch was more than just this. It's really to bad we arent all together where we can mosey up and say Hi just like we do here. But I digress. Thanks for your patience and hearing me out. You're all birds in this world and I think you all make the trees look nice and full! Ya' know....maybe I might ask O'Malley if I could borrow his cabin for a bit for some get away time!

Seriously, John, your description of your current situation concerns me. You are obviously not in a happy place, and I'm sorry about that. You don't say how you got there, and I don't want to pry, but "POOF" doesn't give one much to go on to explain the absence of friends. I can only assume a physical move, a relocation or some such. I can't imagine how difficult that would be. I've been right here in my little "rut" for about 37 years, and the idea of moving elsewhere is horrifying to me. You also mention being "in a rut" so to speak. I don't pretend to have answers, but I do have suggestions, and they would perhaps help with both problems. It's trite but true - to have a friend you have to BE one. Find something you can do together, to help someone else. Volunteer somewhere - at a library, a youth center, a church or synagogue, a hospital, a civic organization, Meals on Wheels, whatever. If you don't already, begin attending worship services in the faith of your choice. If it's the right place, you'll find friends there. If you don't, go somewhere else.

You won't necessarily find friends in these places, but you will find a different "you". Your attitude will change, you'll be happier and more involved in life, and people will find you interesting. The friendships may come as a secondary benefit to the things you've become involved in. If not, you may just be too tired to care! (heehee) Anyway, look within, look around you, and most of all, look UP. This too shall pass.

HORATIO - The Chicago Bears were wearing what's called "throwback" uniforms. A lot of teams wear them from time to time to celebrate the NFL's past. The Bears still have the same uniforms and you'll probably see other teams wear throwbacks throughout this season!

ROMEENA - Yeah, PH is a hoot! A real Katzenjammer kid. Hoo, Hoo, Yuck, Yuck! LOL! Humor is always appreciated.
The friends thing is just life. Some drift apart, some move away, you lose track, etc. I am hoping and praying for the move to Arkansas in the spring of 11'. I am so very concrened for my mother and g'mother. My mom is just over the shingles and it is paaaaainful for her. The up news is that they are going away with prescribed medicines and doctor's care. I keep my eyes on the south. I am trying to do the Quantrill project for the Gentry, Ark. Library, I look at sites of Branson, Missouri and Silver Dollar City and I just dream and fall into a trance of daydreaming of when I will get there. I am like a kid at Christmas to get down there! I want to join a church and get more involved with things. I plan to try my mother's church and also try out some other choices. I told mom that I dont want to go to her church just because it's HER church and she encouraged me to look around and find my fit. If it's her church, great. If not, great too! My Quantrill research and sites like this and ones I daydream on keep me smiling and motivated. Ooooo, it's hard to get to them sometimes. But once I do, I can usually get rolling. I am very comforted that I can find the way through my own fog to give advice and comfort to those here that heed it and are comforted by it (BOO is a good example). It gives me a great feeling to be able to help someone up even though I have trouble standing on my own two legs. There is a line in the song "I Gotta Be Me" that says "I cant be right for someone else if I'm not right for me." That doesnt apply to me. I can find a way to help someone else under my own stress and strains. Understand I am not looking for a pat on the back for that or high praise. I am glad that is a way to find a smile and happiness. By helping others. I am starting to look up again. The devil is in my ear though. "What does he care? My God...look at you now!" But I "turneth" away and reach for my religious books and the tv where I have my favorite religious leader taped. I am looking so forward to finding that window and smelling the spring of a newness. Yeesh....I think I got a little sappy there. Well...you get it I think.

Back I go and I will leave two pitchers of sweet tea here for anyone who wants it. Plenty of big cups here under the rocker!

September 28, 2010 - Msg 81093: How true, Jm...when we help someone else, we are the ones helped, too. I had example of that just last night when I went to volunteer at the drug rehab for teens. Its been about 4 years that I have been going out there and several people have joined me and gone with me for a season but they all end up dropping out of sight due to kids or busy lives. My friend Keith went with me for over 2 years and then decided he needed to stop going. I understand why and its ok but driving out there I just felt lonely about going it alone again. Sometimes I feel lonely for friends, too. My best friend in the world passed away three years ago and I have lost others since then and it hurts. When I got to the rehab, though, the lonely feeling was gone in a second and as it turns out, I needed to be there alone last night to minister one on one with a girl who needed some special help and prayer. Her name is Christina and she has been in there for a whole year. She just found out her mom overdosed on Meth last night..she was found unresponsive and not breathing. The emergency crew shocked her and got her heart going, but it looks ominous. That drug-addicted mom was all this 16 year old girl had in the world and she has no place to go except into foster care with strangers if they can find her a placement. In the meantime, there she sits locked up in that horrible, depressing place. I really noticed last how cold it is and it is totalling lacking in comforts of any kind really. I have decided to go this week and use some of the money our church has budgeted for the rehab, and buy them some nice fleece blankets and new pajama pants. They are also asking for good reading material and one girl wanted a copy of The Diary of Anne Frank, which I am getting off Amazon, along with some other good reading materials. I told them that since Halloween falls on a Monday this year, I would be bringing them lots of candy and some movies to watch. I just feel so sorry for them..how hard it must be to be in their position.

Took my little billy goat baby to the old country vet in town today and had him castrated. It was going to cost me 25 dollars to buy the castrator and do it myself and the vet offered to do it for 30 dollars so I let him. It only took about 2 minutes and we were out of there and on our way home. They must have given him a shot of some kind of pain med because he was kinda loopy when we got him home but he is fine.

I have pumpkin pie in the oven that smells like its ready..better go!

Why dont you see what these kids like, what their favories are in different subjects like music, books, etc. and see what can be done about getting these kind of comforts? There can be a real escape for the good in something that is close to the heart. Not really serious, but something that can be held onto mentally as I posted above about Branson sites and ways to get away in your mind. Ask about what they truly, deeply love and hold in their minds and hearts and see what can be done about it. That might make dreaming a whole lot better at this facility. And believe me, it works!

September 28, 2010 - Msg 81095: Good idea, John Masters. I hear you saying that the girls should be invited to be more involved, not made to just sit and be "done for." Maybe that could be carried into the practical realm? Does the place need painting? Even if it doesn't really NEED it, maybe just brightening up would be nice? Let the girls choose the colors, get them the paint and rollers and brushes, and let them do it! Could they use curtains on the windows? (Assuming there are windows!) Simple curtains are easy to make, and it's even possible to make them without any sewing at all. Use the "loop" or "ring" fixtures and just drape and swag lengths of cloth through them. I've done that in my sunroom, and to some extent, in my bedroom as well. Pillows, rugs, cushions, even bright beanbag chairs can be fun. My heart just aches for those girls. I can't think of anything worse than to feel like there is just no one, no one, who cares. Boo, if you decide to initiate something like this with the girls, email me.

John, you're sounding a bit better. Life can be a real downer at times, can't it? I admire the way you're so involved in your project, and so determined to see it through. I love the Branson/Silver Dollar area, too. When the kids were young, we lived in Springfield for two years, and we had a family season pass for Silver Dollar both years. Every Sunday, after church, we'd go home and change clothes, then head for Silver Dollar City. We ate lunch there, we rode the rides (over and over again) and hung out at the candy maker, the glass blower, the grist mill, the smithy, all the wonderful places that just take you back to those times and places you never saw, but can't help dreaming of. Wonderful!

Well, off I go. Couple of errands that must be done, nothing that will keep me out of the car for more than a minute or two, so guess I'll take little Toye Starr with me. She just loves going along. It's quite cool today, just 73, and I'll never be out of sight of the car, so it's safe to take her. She'll be so excited when I tell her she's going (yes, she understands the phrase) and she'll spin in circles like a crazy puppy until I pick her up and carry her to the car. September 28, 2010 - Msg 81096: Yeah RO, I am on the brink of hitting something big in my research, so I am upbeat and driving towards my goal.
I went with my wife, FIL and G'maIL to Branson two years ago and absolutely fell in love with the area. I was swallowed whole and didnt want to come back home. Then....we visited my mom and g'ma in Siloam Springs, Ark. and I knew I was hooked. I lived down in NW Arkansas before as a teen and I liked it, but not like this. I am beating a path to get down there and I will have season passes to SDC, you can bet on that!! You might be interested to know, Ro, that there is a fan site that is a really great group of SDC fans that are nutty cookoo over the place. It's www.sdcfans.com I am a member and my username is Andymeets1880s. I chose it because SDC feels like a great cross between the 1880's and, appropriately enough, The Andy Griffith Show.

And not just the girls being involved, but also having an escape into their passions or likes.

My wife and I have two dogs. One is a male Chihuahua/Dachshund mix named "Howie" and the other is a female Dachshund/Rodesian Ridgeback named "Lillie." They know "Bye-Bye" and if we grab their collars and leashes, they run up the back of the couch and try to shoulder each other out of the way to see who can get collared first! LOL! We nicknamed them Mr. Dog (Howie) because he can be bossy. And Lillie is "Itters" because she was so itty-bitty as a pup and that evolved into little "itters", then just "Itters."

Yeesh....I think my side of the porch got too gooey there! LOL!

September 28, 2010 - Msg 81098: Good idea, Jm and I have been with most of them long enough to have a good idea about what they love. I spoke with my pastor today and he is going to meet with me this week to help me order some things online for the girls. What I am thinking of is books and music, DVDs, fleece throws, some big pillows or beanbags (great idea..hadn't thought of it), and some pj's and t-shirts, house slippers. They don't get to wear regular clothes out there but have to wear pajama pants or sweats and t-shirts, no regular shoes only socks or slippers. Once they attain a certain level they are allowed jeans and flip-flops but I seldom see that. One thing that absolutely love is to be creative and when I take the beads out there to make bracelets they go nuts. Any kind of craft project is a big deal. As far as the paint, Ro, the walls are all painted a cheerful color but in the past when the girls were allowed to do some painting, alot of obscene graffiti was written so they put a stop to that. I was thinking, though, about asking if I could get some posters to put up because there is no art of any kind or nothing beautiful to look at. Believe it or not, they also love to color with crayons so I will try to provide that. I think that I will also try hard to bring some kind of home made goodies with me each week because they never get anything homemade, except on holidays. Well, thanks for the interest and ideas. You are all a part of this ministry and have been from the beginning, through your prayers and through your encouragment. Can't thank you enough. :-)

Hey Maude. I hope your hubby got a clean bill of health and all systems are back to normal operation. MDC, tell me more about this virtual thing you mentioned. I had a colonoscopy 9 years ago and was clean, but just a few weeks after the procedure started having some problems that eventually required surgery. I have no doubt it was a direct cause of the colonoscopy, but I won't go into to much detail here as it is rather delicate. But needless to say I am not eager to do it again. So if there is another option, I'm all ears. Tell me more please.

Well, just pay no attention to me today. I am just gonna sit here in my rocker and try to figure out what THIS day holds. This is not one of my better days. As I take a step forward, I regress back yet again. Last night, I had two weeks worth of study and intense research wiped out by one sentence. I had something I was right on the brink of closing and then read one....one sentence in a book and it took my research back to the very beginning again. I have no idea now where to restart. I have to stretch my brain and see if I can figure out a new starting point to make another run at it. I was at the local library last night and when I read that one sentence, it was like someone just walloped me in the stomach.
I had a bad night last night. Not much sleep. And right now, I am staring out a window with sunshine and the bluest skies. Dont get me wrong, my mood is not from just my research gone wrong. I am just regressing again. Just as I feel I want to get closer to religion and God, I take a step back. I have so much on my mind and so much on my head. I have literally watched myself turn gray in just under a year. I am doing this rapidly! I have a lot of dark hair (I have dark brown hair) yet to go, but I have watched the gray set in faster and faster it seems. ROMEENA, I have a daydream that would never happen because it is just a daydream. But I wish I could take a chair, a rocker or lawn chair, and sit dead center of a closed Silver Dollar City. I have found on the SDCFans site that there are a LOT of people that have that same sentiment.
I have appreciated your love and concerns and advice and I seem to feel more at ease venting to you as I am now. I hate to cast my burdens to you as I know where I should really cast them. But I just dont have the drive or momentum to do it today.

Well.......back to the drawing board!

Asa-That is sad news about George Blanda. I still have his autobiography, "Alive and Kicking." He was my hands down absolute favorite Raider. I went to a Bills-Raiders Monday Night Football game at Rich Stadium in 1974. I remember George missed a 50 yard field goal as time ran out. I was 13 years old then and those guys seemed bigger than life. Madden was coaching, OJ was playing for the Bills and Raiders... well, the Raiders were the Raiders. Blanda, Stabler, Biletnikoff, Branch, Sistrunk, Bubba Smith, oh my goodness. And, to top it off, we got to see Howard Cosell, Alex Karras, and Frank Gifford in the booth. Great fun, but, the Raiders lost. Darn!

Good to see you Tom. How's your football team doing? It's only week 4 coming up and it looks to be another long season for us. But thats ok. Ya gotta have some down years to really appreciate the good ones. (that's my story and I'm sticking to it!)

Well better get things put away here and call it a day. Sure been warm here in the afternoons. Not stinking hot, but pleasantly warm after nice cool morning to get started. It's not unusual here to see 40 degrre temp swings from the morning lows to the afternoon highs. It was 45 this a.m. and is 83 right now.

auh20, I envy you for having attended that NFL game back in 1974 and saw some legends play. Back in 1976, I was lucky enough to attend a few Chicago Bears games, but I don't remember any legends playing. The best part was that not only did I not have to pay any admission, I was actually paid to attend.

PH, If you went to Bears games in 1976 you most likely got to see one of the great legends play in Walter Payton, didn't you? Or was that before his time? I'm not sure when he entered the league. Of course he wasn't a legend yet then, but sure did become one. I loved to watch him run. He attacked the tacklers, not what you see today by most running backs. Very punishing runner. Him and Earl Campbell with the Oilers. Great running backs. Awww, those were the days.

HM, Glad Casey is doing better. Yer a good Ma.

BOO - Very glad to hear about those hearin' aids! My father has one in each and they are not that great. He gets loads of feedback and has trouble hearing still. I told him he needs to get to the doctor and get things cleared up. They aint worth the price paid for em' I'll tell you that!

ASA - You gotta admit one thing....due to the lack of quality of both of our teams over the last several years, our Chiefs-Raiders rivalry isnt what it used to be. Actually, I would say it is all but gone. Seems Denver has taken the Raiders spot. Doggone Donkeys! We have the bye week and then get to look Peyton Manning in the face for four quarters! Yikes! I dont see us winning that one because I think he take apart our rookies in the secondary. But I will be happy if I just see us put up a good fight.

Asa, yes it is true that Walter Payton did play with the 1976 Bears. But as you mentioned, he was not a star at that time. He was drafted by the Bears in 1975.
Too bad I missed the Dick Butkis era. Unfortunately, he had retired three years earlier.
However, I was fortunate to have worked a short time with some former Bears players such as former wide receiver Johnny Morris (left Bears in 1967), former running back Mike Adamle (left Bears in 1977), and former quarterback Jim McMahon (left Bears in 1988).

I got up early this morning and turned on the television. I watched an old episode of Dennis The Menace and got a surprise. Ron Howard was in this episode, and he appeared younger than he was in the first episode of TAGS. When I searched IMDB.COM, the Dennis The Menace episode I was watching was from 1959. And we all know that TAGS started in 1960.
