I noticed that back then (late 1950's and early 1960's), the nurses all wore the same outfit; a white dress, white hosiery, white shoes, and that unique cardboard hat. Today, the nurses wear multi-colored or flowered tunics and pants without any hats. When and why did the change take place?

September 19, 2010 - Msg 80927: Hey, PH. The change you mention began in the early 70s, was in full swing by the time I finished nursing school in 1979, and by the mid-80s, was just about finished. I actually have a traditional nurse's cap, and wore it for the first year or two, but by the very early 80s the caps were already rare, and by the mid-80s, they were pretty much extinct. Incidentally, they're not cardboard, they're actually fabric, but they're starched very stiffly and ironed so smooth that they do look like cardboard. There is the standard, traditional cap, and then there are the "school caps", with each school having an exclusive design. My own school's cap looks like something the French upstairs maid would wear, and I hated it. So I wore the standard cap, which could be worn instead of a school cap if the nurse chose. The black band signified that the wearer was a registered nurse. I still have my cap, and it's still stiff-starched and smooth, but slightly yellowed now.

So there you have the "when". As for the "why", it was a matter of comfort, convenience and practicality, and it also coincided with the advent of more casual attire for women in general. My grandmother and my mother wouldn't have dreamed of going "to town" without wearing a dress, stockings, shoes with at least some heel height, and a hat and gloves. I think nothing of going to the mall in jeans, a sweatshirt, and ratty old shoes. I'm clean, but very casual. Until the 70s, as you said, a nurse wore a white dress, white hosiery and white oxford shoes, usually with a bit of a heel, and a cap. Everything was starched within an inch of its life. However, in those days, there might be one or two, at the most three RNs on a given floor, and the rest of the staff consisted of aides and orderlies. These folks were usually sturdy and strong, especially the orderlies (males) and they did the heaviest physical work. They moved patients from a gurney to a bed, they crawled under a bed to retrieve things or plug something into an outlet, and they carried the heavy linens down to the laundry chute. The RNs did the skilled tasks (IVs, catheters, dressing changes, injections and medications - such as that) and supervised the activities of the rest of the staff.

Then in the 70s, the push for more RNs and fewer aides began, and has continued. Where once one or two RNs might have supervised and maintained a unit of 20 or 30 patients, with several aides to help, typical staffing now is one RN to 6 or 7 patients, with just one or two aides on the whole unit, which typically will hold 20-25 patients. This means that a female RN will be involved in moving a 200 lb patient from a gurney to a bed, and trust me, you're not going to do that standing flat on the floor. You're going to climb up and kneel on that bed and drag the patient over. If something is dropped, the nurse will be on her hands and knees to retrieve it. This is not easily or modestly accomplished in hosiery and a skirt. Thus, pants entered the picture. Hats were the next to go, as they had a way of getting hung up in things. Traction frames are notorious for snatching a cap off a nurse's head, taking a large tuft of hair out in the process. I still think the caps look great, very professional, but I wouldn't wear one again on a bet.

Well, that's the story - probably a lot more than you were asking for. I guess in nursing, as in life in general, clothing styles are a reflection of what's going on in the society at any given time. Blessings! --Romeena

So, white pants and tops, and no hats became the uniform for a good long while. Then a few years back, colors entered the scene, supposedly making the staff appear friendlier and more approachable. My unit left it to choice for a while - wear white if you wish, or add a colored jacket. Recently we went to one color - Caribbean Blue - and two of the three pieces of a uniform must be that color. Pants, top and jacket. It's generally understood that the pants will be the CB color, and then either a CB top and colored jacket, or CB jacket and colored top. I generally wear a t-shirt in a contrasting or blending color, and a CB jacket.

I enjoyed your nurse uniform history lesson, Romeena. :-) PH, when I was in nursing school in the early 80's, we were required to wear the full white uniform thing, with white hose and shoes and the standard nurses hat. What a pain! When we graduated they put two black stripes on the hat and then mine went into the closet never to be used again. I, like Ro, still have it but it is yellowing and stashed away somewhere. I was required to wear white on my first job but then when I went to work in the labor unit, you were required to wear the surgical scrubs that the hosptital provided because it was considered a "clean" area since we did c-sections, sometimes in an emergency and no time to change into surgical attire when that happens. Delivery rooms were also considered clean area back in the days before more casual birthing suites. I thought it was great because I never had to wash soiled clothes and bring home germs from work. We changed in a locker room when we got there and changed back into our street clothes when we left. Win/win situation. They clothes were also very comfortable and non-restricting, which was great in a busy L/U. We found ourselves doing alot of lifting and moving beds (occupied and not) and even cleaning up after deliveries. It was a tough job but had it perks.

September 19, 2010 - Msg 80933: PH, did you mean to ask if it's true that there are now more LPNs (LVNs in Texas) and aides? If so, the answer is no. There are fewer. My hospital no longer hires LVNs. The ones who were already on staff have been retained, but will not be replaced in kind when they leave. Also, the number of aides is not adequate, but they're all we're allowed and we're grateful for them. I'd rather work with two nurses and a good aide than with three nurses, any day of the week.

Well, I'm ready for a nap. I think I'll get a big glass of tea, my little sweet doggie, the phone and the TV remote and go curl up in my big chair for a large slice of the afternoon. Sunday is a day of rest, right? Well, honeys and dears, I can do that!

September 20, 2010 - Msg 80940: Well, good EARLY morning! I found that nap I was looking for, slept about three hours in my chair, and therefore, only dozed a while after I actually went to bed, then just "fell awake." So, here I am, at nearly 5 a.m., all bright-eyed and bushytailed. Figured I might as well get up and get a few little chores done. Got some laundry to fold, dishwasher to empty, clean linens to put on a guest bed, such as that. I have a friend from Florida on her way, she should arrive about mid-day - not sure of the time. She's a retired flight attendant, so flies on a pass, and naturally that means she flies on stand-by status. She'll be here through Friday, and I'm really looking forward to her visit. She's a neighbor to my son and DIL out there, that's how I met her, and she's just so much fun. She's an animal lover like me, so Toye Starr will make a new friend.

It's still hot here, and humid, but just not quite as bad as it was. Fall isn't here yet, but there's a suggestion of it now and then. My poor tomato plants are still budding, but they don't set any fruit, because it doesn't get below 80 at night. However, right now it's 79, so maybe a little change is coming. We shall see.

I will be SO glad when it gets cooler and the algae in the pond slows down. There is an inch of sludge on the bottom right now, and when the fish swim close to it, it swirls up and at that rate it takes about twelve hours to clog the pre-filter. I have a manual piston pump with a discharge tube that I can pull the sludge out with and pump it onto the yard (good fertilizer) but it just takes more energy than I've got to operate the thing long enough to make any difference. I also have one that operates by water flow from the garden hose, but it's not very effective and puts a lot of chlorinated water into the pond. I can neutralize the chlorine, but it also changes the temperature of the water rapidly, and the fish don't react well to that, so I don't use that apparatus much. I guess I'll get Jorge to come by and pump the sludge out for me. He's built like a tank, and when he gets after that pumper, he finishes the job in short order.

Well, maybe I'll go back and try to catch a few more winks. Toye Starr is no dummy, she just raised her little head and looked at me when I got up, like "Are you crazy?", moved over into my spot and went back to sleep. Guess I'll go push her aside and reclaim my territory. Or maybe I'll let her keep the spot, and I'll stake out another one. Blessings, friends. --Romeena
September 20, 2010 - Msg 80941: Morning Ro. I didn't "fall awake" until 6. I have lots of chores do get done today so I am not looking forward to that but you know how it is when all your kids are still at home...plus an extra relative and a mother-in-law who drops by frequently. ;-) Speaking of, I think she has been of her medicine again and is being a pain in my side. Just last night she said some rather ugly things about me to my sister in law and of course my SIL had to tell me about it and make me feel bad. Ro, I'm starting to think that I tolerate too much. I don't understand why MIL would say things about me that are untrue. I have been very good to her. She said some really hurtful things about how I "wear the pants in the family" which is very untrue and how I am to blame for Sean's behavior at times, and "poor Bruce works so hard and sometimes he has to fix himself a sandwich after work because dinner isn't handed to him", and why didn't I invite her over for lunch yesterday after church? Why don't I always answer her phone calls everytime she calls? etc. etc...frustrating because she lived with me for almost a year and she knows how hard I work and she never lifted a finger to help me and never invites me to her house for supper or ever offers to help in any way. I have tried to be nice and understanding to her all these years and she acts sweet to my face and then I find out what she really thinks about me. It's pretty hurtful. Its not that I need her approval, but I have to admit I do want her to think well of me because I love her and she's my husband's mom. Oh well, I guess this is kind of an age-old (old age) dilemma. Not sure what to do about it if anything. What concerns me, though, is that Bruce knows about it and he is ready to go over there and set his mom straight and I don't want him to be too hard on her and I don't think it would do any longterm good. He has had to have talks with her before about this sort of thing. I am praying about how to best handle it or just forget about it. I know I'm not perfect but I carry a heavy load and could use some encouragment and understanding instead of criticism.

Hey Boo. I'm so sorry your MIL is being like that. I know at times when folks get older they can be difficult to deal with. And that may be the case somewhat with your MIL, but the fact that she is sweet to your face and then is saying bad things about you behind your back suggests to me that it can't all be attributed to old age. So that being the case, and not knowing all the dynamics my first inclination would be to let Bruce handle it how he seems to feel best. I think it's good that he honors you enough that he is willing to go set his mother straight. Bruce sounds like a good decent Christian man who I'm sure will deal with it tactfully, but also set things straight if you will. So my thoughts are to let Bruce take care of it and see what happens. (but thats easy for me to say)

Ro, my maters are producing like jack rabbits on "little blue pills". Our night time temps are steadily in the 50's now, even dipping into the 40's at times, so that does make a big differnce. My corn is all done. Gave all the stalks away to family friends and neighbors who use them for decorating. That works out great. Now I don't need to try and compost them. They take to long to break down for my liking anyway.

MDC, yea, you guys had a rough one yesterday. Oh well. So did a lot of other teams. And I suspect John Masters will be on here shortly glowing about his Chefs. HA! Thats ok John. Gloat away. You deserve to after all this time. :)

Well better go see what the new week brings. I'm busy getting all our equipment ready for winter now. Hate the thought of it, but it's gotta be done. Looks like I have a snow blower with my name on it ready for service. BLAH!

I'm inclined to agree with Asa, let Bruce talk to his mother, since he's offered to do it. That will shoot down her accusation about you "wearing the pants", if he takes the initiative in dealing with her. He might remind her that the Bible says a man will "leave father and mother and cleave unto his wife", and that if she continually puts herself at odds with you, that leaves him no choice but to separate from her completely. You're in a tough spot, obviously, because the only way you know about this stuff she's said is by your SIL telling you, so in order to defend yourself, you'll have to throw SIL under the bus. Do you have any reason, however remote, to believe that SIL might be inventing or embellishing the story? If so, maybe you need to get all four together - you, Bruce, SIL and MIL, and discuss it. That kind of sniping can really do a lot of damage in a family, and needs to be "nipped in the bud."

My friend missed the first two flights she was hoping to get on, but there's another one at 11 my time, that she's pretty hopeful about. We'll see, I guess. Passes are great, and non-rev flight is wonderful if you can get on. Still, there's something about having a paid-for seat that only requires you to show up on time, and you're on. (Well, almost always. In some circumstances, even a paid passenger can get bumped. It's never happened to me, but I've seen it.)

September 20, 2010 - Msg 80949: Well Ro, if this kind of thing had not happened before in the past, I might think that SIL is embellishing, but this isn't the first time. Not long ago, MIL came to us and told us that she was sorry for some of the wrong things she was saying to us and thinking about us and that it was just her "wrong thinking" because she was not taking enough of her depression drugs or something. Maybe that is what is going on now but if Bruce talks to her, she will first of all disagree and try to defend herself but Bruce will tell her much of what you suggested. Last night he told me that the older he gets, the more protective he is of his immediate family and he will not allow someone to come in and hurt us so he will tell her that she has caused a rift between her and himself. That will shake her up because, to tell you the truth, she has alienated the rest of her kids. The SIL that lives here now can't stand to be around her mom for more than an hour and her other daughter is pretty much estranged from her. Her other son and his wife won't even have her in their home. She never gets an invitation from anyone else in the family. It would seem she would be more careful not to offend the only one of her kids that is still willing to help her and spend time with her. I fear she is about to burn her last bridge with Bruce. I think she realizes that it will probably be up to me, ultimately, that will decide where she ends up when she can no longer care for herself and so she is very nice to my face. When the time comes to talk about nursing homes, I will be the one to decide what happens to her because Bruce will never bring her into our home again unless he has my blessing, especially after some of the things that have gone on. Yesterday, she got ugly with Sean, too, while she was over here and he got upset and said some things to her that he shouldn't have and then Bruce and I had to deal with him over that. It's just a difficult situation. If you have people in your life who are critical, the kind you can never do enough for, then you know what I am dealing with.

If you are reading early enough in the evening, please send up a prayer for the girls at rehab. I will be out there this evening with them. I am a little down because my friend who has been going out there with me for the last few years has decided that he is too busy and has to concentrate on other things right now. His 93 yr old dad is having trouble and I understand that he has stretched himself too thin and I don't fault him at all, I will just miss having someone to go with out there. I would also appreciate a prayer that the Lord would provide someone to go with me and share in that ministry. I appreciate it. :-) I love ya'll.

September 20, 2010 - Msg 80956: Thanks for those prayers but maybe the Lord can use them for next week. I got all ready to go and then at the last minute Sean started getting sick and Bruce wasn't home yet. Also, SIL went outside to unleash the dogs and untangle them and they knocked her clean to the ground (and she is the one who had recent back surgery). So, the dogs had to be caught, the cables untangled and they had to be moved. Also the crazy dogs found a big turtle in the yard and were going berserk trying to kill the thing. By the time I saved the turtle and got the dogs secured, it was too late. I felt terrible about it and really had wanted to go. Lord keep those girls and prepare their hearts for next week, and please make a way for me to get there without problems. Amen.

Asa, Bruce told me he had been "ruminating" over the wisest way to handle this situation with his mom and he is going to go talk to her. I'll let him handle that any way he sees fit and I trust him to do the right thing. Thanks for your kind words and prayers. It is so obvious that you really care about people's needs Asa..well, that goes for the rest of you, too.

The rain started up again today but stopped this evening and we spent a nice evening on the back porch watching the baby goats leaping around in the grass and the hummingbirds drinking at the feeder. So many of them! Its not hot outside right now..in the 70's, although it is humid and LOTS of skeeters~! We used alot of repellant. Wish you all could see those babies run and play in the grass already...they are the cutest things in the world!

I made a good supper tonight! Wish I coulda shared it with you all. We had tacos..the kind where you simmer the meat for a good long time and fry the tortilla instead of using those manufactured tortilla shells. Then I topped them with some fresh leaf lettuce and tomato, shredded cheese and sour cream. Wow, really good with the pinto beans I slow cooked for hours. I've got a full tummy and a grateful heart. Hope you all have a blessed mayberry kind of evening. :-)

September 21, 2010 - Msg 80975: Good grief I'm a dunce. I completely read HM's question wrong. I thought she asked who we didn't like in the lesser characters. That's why I said Rodger Hanover. Then I was looking at some of y'all's responses and was getting all messed up.
Anyway, now that I'm up to speed I'd for sure say Emma Brand and our fat little mayor a close second. And I always kinda liked Mr. Wheeler. Yea, I know he was a bum but I think they could have worked his character into the show for some good things. But what do I know.

Thanks for reminding us about Millie Hazel. It's hard to believe it's been 3 years. I wonder how her family is doing.

Romeena, I was at the electric supply house today and saw some pretty good deals on LED lights. It looks like the pricing on them is slowly coming down (although still very pricey) and they have now come out with ones that will work on a dimmer. Unlike the CFL's, these lights have some good color renditions and every thing I am hearing about them will last for 10,000 hours. Heat is any electrical components worst enemy and these things put off zero heat. The CFL's made that claim but never lived up to it. In fact the biggest gripe about the LED's has been price and I was sure in time they would come down. I really think these lights are going to take off in popularity as the prices continue to come down. So keep your eye on them.

September 22, 2010 - Msg 80977: Morning Honeys. I think it stopped raining...at least for now. Should be a very warm day here in s texas. How's the weather in your neck of the woods (I sound like that weatherman on TV...Al somebody?).

Asa, Bruce has been working overtime all week but will probably go to his mom's to fix her computer and have a talk with her. She called me amd the conversation went something like this: "I need to put my car in the shop. When can you take me to leave it?..Thursday or Friday?"...no "can you", "would you please", not even a "thank you" when she hung up. Haha. Honestly, though, I know that she will thank me when I take her. She is always good about that. One of the problems we have sometimes is that I help sean with his schoolwork in the mornings and Bruce really wants that to be uninterrupted time because family tends to forget or not be respectful of that. Being dyslexic, Sean needs alot of one-on-one instruction and he has to really concentrate on what he is doing and alot of distractions are not what we need. I try to get it all done in the early part of the day so taht I have time in the afternoon to tend to the daily chores and dinner. MIL tends to keep forgetting the business of my schedule and thinks we need to drop what we are doing when she wants to come over or whatever. Probably something Bruce is going to have to talk to her about, too.

I had a pleasant visit yesterday with my mother. Had coffee and sat with her for about an hour and now that she has a hearing aid, its so much easier to do that! Speaking of hearing aids, Bruce's hearing aides might get payed for by his employer...he put in for it through the budget department and is waiting to find out. It would be a big financial burden lifted for him since the things cost several thousand dollars. He really needs them to function as he should on the job, so hopefully they will help out.

Oops, I hear it raining...again!...

We had the baby goats out playing yesterday and they were so funny! Already not even a week old and they are doing such antics. We were sitting on the bach porch, and you have to step up about a foot to get on the porch...well the boy baby was so interested in that step that he tried to hop up there and would fall until he got the hang of it, then he would kind of jump up and shake himself and fly off the step...sometimes on top of his sister. Over and over he would climb up and jump off. So fun to watch him. The mama goat is a good mama and very watchful over them. We are having a great time just observing them each day.

Have any of you tried the sweetner called "Truvia"? Its supposed to be made from the plant, Stevia and natural? I bought some the other day and I just tried it in my coffee and its pretty good.

Better get moving...plenty to do today.

September 22, 2010 - Msg 80978: Good Wednesday porch,hope all is well.I have been coming by the porch and looking around but haven't had time to sit and rock so I thought I would sit a spell while I had a minute from work.

Looks like everyone has been busy.

My favorite lesser characters would be Emma Brand and Malcom Merriwether. I sure could use Malcom at my house about now.!

Lunch menu will be: chicken tenders, home fries, SLAW and texas toast! Tea, kool aid to drink and oatmeal cookies for dessert.

September 22, 2010 - Msg 80979: Boo - I know what you mean. We used to have a bench out by the pasture. Watching the babies is better than TV. Sometimes in the spring, the old does act like young does, and they jump and run and play. They are such a joy!

How could I forget about Malcolm Merriwether - I always loved him. Must have been the accent! Still need him at my house too - trying to get caught up before tomorrow.

HM, I am thinking about some things I can put back there that they will have fun climbing on..I have my thinking cap on. At one time we had a peice of plywood propped against the barn and one of the other goats (our youngest one) went berserk trying to run up that thing and would slide back down. Those goats are a hoot. Poor babies are having to stay shut up in the pen today because of all the rain.

Romeena or Boo, today I was watching a program called Trauma; Life In The ER. One of the people working in the ER (Emergency Room) was called a Nurse Practioner. I never heard of that job. What do they do and how do they differ from a RN?

And although I have already answered hm's question when I listed my favorite three TAGS characters, I will repeat my favorite lesser character. Since he only appeared in 80 out of 249 episodes, my choice is Floyd. He was hyper and funny before the stroke, and he was funny after the stroke.

Well, I can't give alot of details about that, PH but I have a friend who is studying to be nurse practitioner right now. It is a further degree that you have to obtain and most practitioners are hired by doctors to help them..kind of like a physician's assistance. The ones I know see patients for the docs, can write prescriptions and make a diagnosis. Its like they are practicing under a doctor's supervison. I think my friend plans to help out a pediatrician at some point. They pay is pretty good, I know that, but alot of responsibilty. Maybe Ro can tell you more.

September 22, 2010 - Msg 80988: PH - my niece is a nurse practioner for the Minute Clinic's. She makes simple diagnosis - strep, flu, etc and writes scripts. She also makes referrals to other doctors. Her husband happens to be a hospitalist - I think that is the correct term.

I am worn out tonight...been one of those busy days around here. I ended up making some cherry-blueberry jam from some frozen fruit I needed to use. Cherries and blueberries are very heart healthy. I made it with honey and a small amount of sugar and it turned out really good.

Something stressful turned into something really neat this evening. A hummingbird flew into the garage while the door was up and he couldn't manage to find his way out...just kept flying real close to the ceiling and wouldn't fly out the opening. The poor thing was at it for over an hour. Sean and I tried opening a window and using brooms to try to coax him away from the ceiling and nothing worked. The poor little thing got so tired that he finally landed on something and made the most pitiful little crying sound. I lifted the broom to him and he jumped on and held tight to it and I was able to take him out of the garage but he wouldn't get off the broom, so I gently took him in my hand and pulled him free. You wouldn't believe how tiny his little feet were and how strong his grip was on those broom straws. It was a special moment for me because I actually got to hold a hummingbird in my hand for a few seconds. It didn't take him long, though, to fly back into the sky to greet his friends..and they were immediately there to greet him. :-) That sweet little bird was one of the cutest things I have ever seen.

Thingss didn't go so well with our big, dumb dogs though. It was still raining today so they were cabled near the garage so they could lay in there to be out of the rain. They were in there last night and managed to find a glass jar to break and several items to tear up. This morning they managed to pull a bag full of trash out of the can and had it strewn all over the garage and carport. Those dogs are really driving me over the edge. I finally ended up tying them in the back with Thelma Lou! I really didn't need to deal with all that today but Hank was so tangled up that the cable was around his waist like a belt and around one of his legs and it took me a long time to untagle the cable. What a nuisance!

Think I will send Erin off to bed and go to bed early tonight.

September 23, 2010 - Msg 80992: Good late evening, friends. Have been very busy the last couple of days, enjoying the company of my friend from Florida. We've gone to lunch, visited my favorite costume jewelry store (it's really a fun destination for visitors, they always come away with a bag full of goodies), we've played with Toye Starr, and tonight Eloise and Jerry and Dave and Brittney and the boys came over. David grilled burgers and hotdogs for us, we had a great dinner, and I had been making ice cream in various flavors all week, so we had that to enjoy as well. Suzanne is a great guest, very comfortable and makes herself at home - my favorite kind of guest, of course. Tomorrow Eloise will join us and we'll go to the Dallas Arboretum and enjoy the beautiful scenery there, and probably have lunch in the lovely little tearoom out there. I have a family pass, so we'll get in free, and even park free. That pass is cool!

Boo, I'll be praying for Bruce as he tries to reason with his mother. That's very difficult, I'm sure. He naturally wants to be respectful and loving with her, but he wants even more to protect his family, even from her. Tough spot to be in, but he'll find a way.

What a lovely experience, getting to help the little hummer. I've never been blessed with an opportunity to touch one, though I've come close. I have just three that come around my feeder, but I really do enjoy them. Tiny little miracles.

Well, I'm off to bed. Back pain is really getting annoying - maybe if I get a few hours of good sleep it will help. Blessings, friends. --Romeena
