September 15, 2010 - Msg 80837: I have questioned that myself, MDC, and have concluded that it has to do with the pronunciation, rather than the actual letter that begins the word. Since the "h" is actually silent, causing the word to be pronounced as though it began with a vowel, the article "an" is used. We say "an hour", but we don't say "an horse", because the "h" in horse is pronounced. Therefore, the usage of "an historical event" while it sounds just as educated as can be, is really more of an affectation and isn't correct. People tend to use the "an" before "historical", but they don't use it before the root word "history". "An history book" just sounds ridiculous, but many people think "an historical (whatever)" sounds very proper. Language is such a fascinating thing, all the subtle little nuances, and I'm always struck by the way it changes and evolves - not always for the better.

I just heard from my visitors, they expect to get her around six. Good! That gives me time to finish up a few details, bathe Toye Starr and maybe even take her over to her vet to get her nails clipped. I can't believe I'm such a big chicken about that, but I am. I simply will not clip her nails. I'd skip lunch if I had to, in order to pay her vet to do it. Weird.

Well, I got a batch of pineapple ice cream made and packed away in the freezer. Now I need to mash and sugar down some peaches, and in the morning, I'll make some peach ice cream. Made some strawberry yesterday, so when I'm finished, I'll have three flavors from which they can choose. Pot roast is cooked, just need to do some veggies, and we'll have supper when they get here. Regarding your ants problem, the last time I had ants coming through my windows, I placed baby powder on the window sills, and that stopped them. Supposedly they don't like talcum.

Also, with Canadian elections around the corner, I keep hearing "riding" mentioned in the news media. No it has nothing to do with transportation. A riding in Canada is an electoral district that is represented by an elected official.

September 15, 2010 - Msg 80847: Good evening, porch. Pot roast is bubbling in a savory gravy that I'm letting reduce down, veggies are roasting in the oven with olive oil, sea salt, fresh ground black pepper, and some basil, chives and rosemary that I cut from the back yard. Sure smells good. Salad is made, house is as clean as it needs to be, and now I'm just waiting. They should be here any minute.

Boo, and anybody else who might be interested - I finally learned how to control ants. For fireants in the yard, put dry molasses down on the lawn. You can get it at any garden center, it goes down with a fertilizer spreader, and it smells good. It's non-chemical, perfectly organic, is a good fertilizer, and best of all, fireants HATE it! I don't know whether it kills them, but I don't care. All I know is, once I had mounds all over the yard, now I have none. Zero. Haven't had any in three years.

As for the little "sugar" ants that come in the house, Lowe's and the Depot both carry a product called Terro. It comes in about three different forms, but the one that has worked for me is the little flat tray with the clear, syrupy liquid visible inside. You snip the end of the tray, so the ants can get in, and they will. They eat it, take it back to the nest, and in a week or so, no more ants. I keep a little tray on my counter behind the canisters, and a couple in the bathrooms. No sprays, no residue, no danger, and no ants. The dry molasses outside may have helped, but even after I started using that, I still saw the little ants in the house, until I got the Terro. I've tried the other forms of delivery of it, but the little trays have worked best. About a month ago, after my trays had gotten very, very old, I started seeing a few ants on the kitchen counter again. New trays - no ants.

You know, we deal with so many things out here in the "wilderness"..the stickers are such a nuisance (I pulled one out of my foot and sat on one in the living room today!), the bugs (big ones), and now those dreadful ants are just everywhere. They get into the dogs food the minute you set it down and if you stand still too long they are crawling on your feet and biting you. We have the little sugar ants and the big red fireants. BUT, guess what we got today and it's wonderful?? Hummingbirds!! I saw a couple buzzing around by the porch so I put out my hummingbird feeder and you shoulda seen 'em. It blessed my heart so much to watch them hovering around the feeder and flying across the porch. Lovely little things!

PH, I will try the baby powder if they try to come inside. One thing I tried in my last apartment was putting sticks of spearment gum around. That always kept them out of the kitchen. Now I am dealing with 5 acres full of them, though...can't buy that much gum.

Did you throw some coffee in that gravy, Ro? Just wondering...

September 16, 2010 - Msg 80859: Good morning, porch. Gary and Teresa just left, heading up to the church to get things set up for tonight. I didn't go, I'm quite sure they can do it without my help. We have just had a great visit so far, and they even think I'm a good cook! No, Boo, I didn't put any coffee in that gravy, because I didn't have any made, but if I had, it would have surely gone in. I always put coffee in the gravy when Dale was here, because he always had a pot of coffee going. I don't drink it, so I never make it.

I'm having a wonderful time with Gary and Teresa. They're both just the kindest, most delightful people, and great houseguests. They just came in and made themselves at home, and that's what I really like. I actually cooked breakfast this morning - made Aunt Hazel bacon, fried some eggs, toasted some bagel thins, and sliced up a peach and an apple. We ate in the sunroom, and it was so pleasant. They'll be back in an hour or so, and then we'll pick up Eloise and go find some lunch, and mouse around town a little. What a great way to spend a day.

September 16, 2010 - Msg 80860: Quick comment regarding the dry molasses -- I would suggest putting some down now, and then again in the spring. It's a great organic fertilizer, and it promotes natural organisms in the soil, including the beneficial nematodes. Those little guys eat ants and their eggs, by the way. So - put it down now to start improving your soil, and then do it again in the spring before the ants get started. You'll be glad you did.

Boo, if you'll get on a program of putting out corn gluten meal (spread it like fertilizer) it will go a long way toward relieving your stickerbur problem. Trust me, it works. I put it down in the fall and in the spring too, just like the dry molasses. Actually, they can go down at the same time if you wish, but I usually let a week pass between them. --Romeena

I was just watching the "Goober's Contest" episode, and noticed something I never noticed before. After "driving" his car to Goober's gas station early in that episode, Floyd has a short conversation with Goober. Floyd's speech was the most slurred I have ever heard. Then when the scene changed to a rear shot of Floyd driving away from the station, it is quite obvious that they used another actor in place of Floyd to drive the car away. Although I knew Floyd was sick during the color episodes, I'm surprised at how much he was used in this particular color episode.

But I was thankful to Andy and the producers for giving Howard the chance to continue working after his first stroke. If I remember correctly, Howard's wife once said that working helped keep Howard's spirits up during that difficult time of his life.

MDC, funny you should pick the escaped cons as your favorite Floyd episode. If I remember correctly, that was the last episode Howard performed in before his first stroke.

HM, when it comes to one of your young 'uns, any surgery is a big deal. No, I haven't "called the woman" yet because I'm beginning to think none of those goats is pregnant! Now you got me wondering if I would rather have ants or goats and a donkey with the "poops". We are stilling having so much trouble with those stupid dogs I just don't know what else to do with them. I tied them to the back porch yesterday because Hank managed to pry up the chain link on the dog kennel and escape and while he was tied, he chewed up one of the porch posts. Bruce went out last night to fix the kennel and got eaten up by mosquitos only to find that they got out again last night. I don't know what to do next! I'm at a loss.

had a terribe thunderstorm about 10 last night. hail, lightning and lots of rain!

Gonna be busy this week end, going with Beth to the high school homecoming game tonight, guess I should do house chores tomorrow and then Sunday we are taking a day trip to Dollywood with Beth and one of her friends. I need a day away from things in general so I am looking forward to that.

We have an appointment with an attorney this morning to get our wills, power of attorney's and living wills set up. Been thinking about this for a while and seems like it is something we need to take care. Hopefully, it will make it easier on our kids. It is pretty cut and dry as we don't have a lot to sort out but still seems important tp take care of this at this stage of our lives.

September 17, 2010 - Msg 80890: Good morning, Porchsters! Sorry it's been so long, but I have been doing my history research, getting through this thing called life and dang it, just been feelin' a might poorly lately. Won't go into it, but my spirit and momentum just isn't what it used to be.

I am making some real progress in my history research that will benefit NW Arkansas and open a new chapter to their own historic background. There are many that are excited about it as am I and I can't wait to share it with them soon!

We've been getting rain, rain and rain here in the Kansas City metro area! I cant quite catch my overgrowing lawn again due to the fact that the lawn is constantly soaked. It is getting cooler here in the mornings so the lawn is soaked in dew, then the rains move in and squash any chance of mowing it in the late afternoon or evening.

I'll weigh in on this favorite characters poll. My top three are Barney, Andy and I'd say Briscoe.

Hey RO - Let's hope you dont have to save "Gomer's" life.....you'll never get rid of him! You'll go around from here on out tagged as a "life saver woman!" LOL!

And by the way....there is a chiropractor (hope I spelled that right) here named Dr. Boring.

September 17, 2010 - Msg 80898: Howdy, porch. Well, my "company" left about an hour ago, and I was sorry to see them go. Their concert went very well. The crowd really enjoyed them, and I heard several people ask the coordinator to invite them back. Gary and Teresa are both very talented, and Gary's "do" of Gomer is spot on. They're wonderful house guests, because they don't act like "guests", they're just like family. I mentioned that to them, and Gary explained it perfectly. He said, "Well, we ARE family. The family of God." He's right, of course. Still, I know a lot of good Christians who would not dream of removing their shoes, or just getting up and helping themselves to some ice cream or whatever. I had made it plain that I wanted them to feel free, but not everyone will take you at your word. When someone does, then I feel like I've succeeded as a hostess. Anyway, I really enjoyed their visit, and look forward now to seeing them again in about a month on the cruise.

Today is the anniversary of the birth and death of my little grandson, Logan. He's Eloise's grandson as well, and we always go to the cemetery together on the day, but this year, I think we'll go tomorrow. We've both had a big week, and we'll be going to the same area tomorrow to watch Logan's brothers play ball.

September 17, 2010 - Msg 80902: GUESS WHAT?!! I am the proud grandmother of two new baby goats. :-) Turns out Holly Berry (our goat who is partially paralyzed in her backend) was pregnant afterall. Just when I decided she wasn't, we discovered two tiny kids with her this afternoon. She did it! Good Holly Berry. :-) Bruce came into the house at around 2pm and said, "Hey Mama" then he just looked at me for a few seconds while I stood there like an idiot, and then he said, "There are some new baby goats out back!"...I yelled for Sean and Vicki and took off running. She had two darling little babies; a boy and a girl. The boy is white with a dark head...sort of a dark auburn color and he is big and strong already (and LOUD), and the little girl is smaller with a white body and red head like the mom. She is weaker and not nursing as well, so we are keeping a close eye on her. We got them all tucked away in their pen with some fresh hay before the rain started. It is raining cats and dogs out there right now. Well, that's it for my exciting evening. The bad news is that the other goat (Strawberry) might still be pregnant so we might end up with two or three more babies! Not really what I wanted.

September 17, 2010 - Msg 80906: I agree, Hazel..Emma is awesome. Concerning the goats, the mom Holly Berry had to be pregnant when we took her home, although the owner didn't know it. She had not been intentionally bred but our other goat, Strawberry had been before we took her home...so...might be having some more this month. We went with "berry" names for the new babies; the boy is "Chuck Berry" (Bruce's choice) and the girl is "Cranberry". She is still not nursing very well but we have given her some milk with a syringe and even had her inside with a heating pad while it was raining outside and she is getting stronger, I think. I may be taking her to the vet in the morning if she is still not doing as well as she should.

HM, I can already tell that Holly is a good mom to the kids. She is very attentive and has been trying to get the smaller one to nurse. She is a very nice goat..kind of our favorite. I called your friend in Spicewood to ask her advice about Cranberry and she called me back while I was in the shower and I missed her call. I am going to try again tomorrow.
