Thanks Possum, I appreciate the encouragement. I am doing better.
Ro, that is so very sad about your church friends. My prayers for them and your church.
Thanks for posting those links, PH, you are always so helpful that way. Our pastor had one of the best sermons today that I had ever heard him give. About the last 2 months, God has really gotten ahold of him and he has been saying things that I never expected to hear him say...you all remember he is the one who would rather do anything than confront difficulty or risk offending someone, anyway, he has changed, and for the better! Today he read from Luke..the story about the rich man who stored away all of his crops so that he could "take his ease" and eat, drink and be merry"? Then the Lord told him that he was a fool because his soul would be required of him that very night...Jesus said, "...and so it shall be for everyone who is not rich toward God". Whoa...sobering. The point the pastor was making is to be different from the worldly culture around you and submit to the Lordship of Christ in every area of life. Be mindful of eternity and how fleeting life is. He talked about not "shoving" a child down that path of what the world sees as success.."best education, best job that pays the most money"...he said we already put so much pressure on kids to achieve that way but are we teaching them who they are in Christ and how to follow God into His chosen path for them? I think sometimes that we are so blinded by the culture we grew up in that we don't even realize what really matters sometimes. Mark (pastor) said, our identity is not in our jobs, or what we own, or how much money we make, but our identity is in Christ. Keep in mind that he is speaking to a church in an upper-middle class community in which there are very few minorities (one little street in town that would qualify as low-rent), and a place in which the parents think the public school could do know wrong...(I guess their kids aren't telling them what they are telling me in secret). We even have one multi-millionaire in the congregation. I am thinking the sermon might not have gone down so good with some of those folks. Anyway, I'll just leave that to God. I was challenged by it. I know you folks are always so encouraging but I'm telling you that I have been making alot of mistakes as a parent. Bruce supports me when it comes to discipline but we both lack consistency most of the time. I have allowed things to go on with my kids that I never should have allowed, from things (and amount) of television they watch, to really bad attitudes, disrespect, and rebellion. I haven't lived out my faith in front of them as I should have, partly because I feel like I am trying to train them spiritually by myself. Bruce is lacking in that area..he is from the old school that thinks taking them to church every sunday is all that is required. I am thankful that he does that but he needs to be more involved. Lord help us to make some difficult changes and use some tough love with these kids!

RO- that is sad, but, if it is a place like where my mom was, we could take her out, take her to church etc. It's not a prison for God's sake! I ALWAYS took my mom out, first walking, then by wheelchair when she quit walking, but PLEASE encourage him to take her out as much as he can, and the same with visits, and the same with some of the furniture, chairs etc from their house, anything and everything that tells her that it's still HOME.
Sorry to be so blunt, but again, it is her HOME and they all need to be reminded of that! There are patients rights, and fimilial rights, and if he is her POA he is allowed to be there 24hours a day! Things are bad in this land right now, but I would NEVER give up my right to visit and take my mom out etc right up to the day before she passed!
OK, sorry, but please tell him that it's not a prison no matter how much these doctors want us to believe it.
God bless, prayers for Sterlings family and all.
Sterling, stand with your testosteone strong up to that family and stand your ground.
Good words boo, the Lord works in mysterious ways!
Happy Sabbath,

Good evening, porch. Just got home from Eloise's, where I spent the day. She made the world's best pot roast and veggies, our kids and grandkids were there, and we had a great day.
MDC, no worries about Dave. He has chosen carefully and well. Elaine will be in a "residential care home", with a total patient population of twelve, I believe. It's set up like a home, with home-like furnishings, dining room, TV and music room, and a couple of family areas. He will be able to take her out at will, after the first few days. They want her to remain for a few days, to get acclimated and familiar with her surroundings, or at least as familiar as she is capable of achieving. As Dave said, it will be the next best thing to being at home, and maybe now he will be able to get more than two hours of sleep at a time. She was getting up and wandering at all hours, which was of course very unsafe. He couldn't stay awake 24/7, but he was trying. He's not completely well himself, so it had to end. Knowing Dave, I would imagine he'll be there most of the day, every day, and will only go home to sleep.
Well, I'm ready to settle down with my tea, read the paper, and eventually toddle off to bed, my little fluffy friend at my side. She and Bentley had a big day, rough-housed like two kids, chasing each other through the house until they'd both just flop down, tongues lolling out while they panted to catch their breath, then up and at 'em again. They're hilarious - big old galumphy Bentley and tiny frou-frou Starr. Too funny!
Blessings, all. --Romeena

I was thinking about that, Boo, having to go through heck for your faith and to try to live as Christ would want us to. I wish my wife and her mom would understand why I am not backing down. Because it does feel sometimes like everyone is against me. Or at least it seems like her whole family is.
But it sure is nice to be here with people who understand why I am doing what I am doing.
Yep Ro and Poor Horatio, every parent should have to spend a day at a public school, and then go to a Christian school, and compare. I am sure there would be some BIG differences.
Thanks for the links btw, PH.
Luckily the MIL stayed over at her other daughter's house again tonight. I think they are leaving for Indiana tomorrow and will probably stop in on the way through, hopefully when I am not home. ;) The Good Lord willing.
Thanks for the prayers, MDC. And the encouragement.
Well, better hit the hay. I didn't get to take a nap before church tonight, and I since I don't sleep in church(couldn't anyway because the pastor is too thought provoking) I am pretty tired.
You all are the cats, as they say!

I was thinking about Dave when it was time to go to bed last night, Ro...praying that the Lord would comfort him. How sad it had to be that first night.
You know, Sterling, I am really frustrated with something going on with a friend of mine right now. She is the kinda kooky friend who gave me Thelma Lou and my cat, Tigger...anyway, her youngest son, Jordan has been in public school..a really good one the past 3 years and then she decided to pull him out this year (he is 15) and put him in a public high school in the city, something about them offering college credits. The first day there he was totally traumatized, called a "fa*got" and couldn't believe the continual profanity he heard all day. She said Jordan came out to the car the first day and was in a daze..just laid his head against the car and couldn't talk for a minute. I hope and pray she makes a decision to put him back in the private school he was in, which has an excellant success rate and is very challenging. He liked it there, too.
Well, better get going on the chores this morning. Supposed to rain off and on for days due to a tropical depression that went into Mexico this morning. It cools things off a bit. :-)

You know, I was thinking about the new principal, and some ill feelings even I had been having about him, mostly in connection with this situation, that he was being nit-picky about the whole thing.
Then I started thinking about the TAGS episode where that new officer comes to work in Mayberry for a while, and Barney thinks he is trying to take over his job. He was a very by-the-book officer, and he eventually learns from Andy, Barney, and the Mayberry community that sometimes it's best to be a little more lenient and less rule-crazy. It sort of reminded me of the new principal. I mean, he is all the way from Virginia; is totally new to the school and the church, and probably wants to make a good impression and not too many waves. And in trying to do that he is sticking exactly by what the school handbook says, which the other principals, who had been in the church, school, and community for a while, didn't and were a little more easy-going.
I think that might be it. And maybe he will warm up a little bit as well and not be so by-the-book.
Thank you for that special sports report, Hazel. ;)

I think you are on the right track there Sterling. Tags can give us some pretty good insight sometimes, can't it?
Well, I am sitting here with tropical force winds blowing outside and some rain...not a downpour, though and no lightening or thunder. Supposed to rain and blow most of the day today so I guess I will settle in and enjoy it. Not sure if Erin has school yet or not but may just keep her home. I have to do school with Sean today and a few chores but should be a nice day. I just love it when I have a day when I don't have to go somewhere and Tuesday nights are a favorite because we are always home together as a family. I think tonight we are going to have grilled sandwiches and tomato soup for supper (mine will be a grilled rueben...yum). Anyone care to join me?
Last night we had a really good time at the drug rehab with the girls. I went to Walmart yesterday and bought a bunch of beads for them to make some bracelets and you would have thought it was Christmas. They went berserk over that stuff and on both halls we gathered around and made bracelts while listening to christian music on the cd player. They loved it and so did we. Doing things with them gives us a chance to get to know them better and just hang out and listen to them, which is what they need so much. Not long ago I think I mentioned a girl who needed prayer, who was having a hard time forgiving herself...well, she was very happy last night and told us that it looks like someone is going to adopt her and give her a real home and family. I pray it all works out for her. She is such a sweet and quiet girl.
So your team won, Hazel? Here's to a good season for Boise State. BTW, enjoyed chatting with you on facebook the other day. :-)
How true, MDC...last night I was really thinking about this country and some of the things that are happening in it that are very scary. God help and bless the US and turn men's hearts to you and away from selfishness.

September 07, 2010 - Msg 80692:
What??? Our little Laci is seven years old? My goodness, where has the time gone? Possum, my dear, I think it's about time we had an updated picture of that child. Send it to me, and I'll get it in the album.
We're getting rain again. Rained most of the night, and looks like it could do it again. It's just 75 degrees at noon, and that's just amazing! It would be a wonderful day to work in the yard - wet earth would release weeds easily, it's not hot, etc. - but the mosquitoes are out in huge squadrons! If the sun comes out (they hate the sun) I'll get out there. One thing I do need to do, though, is replace light bulbs. I have low-voltage lights (not solar) all around - out front as well as in the back, and I'd say about two-thirds of them are out. I need to go pull the bulbs and take them to Lowe's for comparison so I can buy replacements. I hate to do it, because they are veeerrryy proud of those low-voltage bulbs. Some of them are as much as $5 EACH! That's just ridiculous, especially when they don't last more than a few months. I need them, though. They're not just for "pretty", they provide security as well, especially the ones in the back. This window is huge, provides a view of the whole yard, which of course means that you can see in from anywhere in the yard. I used to close the drapes every night, which is no small task with all the cables and stuff that run behind the desk. Then they had to be opened again in the morning, and would invariably hang up on something and drag it off the desk - just annoying! So, I put out floodlights that shine on the back and side fences, and low-voltage lights scattered around the pond and the flowerbeds. Now, if so much as a large moth flies through, I see the movement. If a person were standing out there, I would most definitely see him. The yard is not so much illuminated as it is back-lit, and that's quite effective. The floodlights last a long time, but those low-voltage bulbs are really wimpy, and they cost as much as the big floods. Go figure.
Well, guess I'll find a little lunch. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Whta kind of ligts are those Ro? Sound like Halogen maybe? They are pricey, and don't last very long, but are very bright. LED lights are going to be the wave of the future I think. They are crazy expensive right now, but will burn forever. If the price on them comes down I think they will make CFL's extinct even.

I heard from her (Elizabeth) a couple of months ago and she was divorcing her alcoholic husband (I think I told ya'll about her) anyway, got another email last week and she already remarried. That was quick but I'm not jumping to any conclusions. She is a very sweet and adorable little blonde thing and I didn't figure it would take long for some cowboy to snatch her up. That is what happened too; her new husband is a rodeo rider on weekends and a heavy equipment operator during the week...I think he is like 6'4" and she is about 100 lbs.

Hey to De§! Long time no see, girl. Glad you're still around. One of these days, when I'm in Fredericksburg, I'm gonna look you up!
It has rained off and on all day here. It just let up long enough for me to pull all those bulbs, but I got rained on going in and out of Lowe's, and again at Kroger, but I don't care. I'm wash-and-wear, and we need the rain.
MDC, the bulbs I'm replacing are those tiny halogen bulbs that go in low-voltage lights. I have them everywhere, highlighting a pretty boulder, or spotlighting the fountain at the pond, whatever. Anyway, they're costly, the miserable little things. I've heard that about the LED lights, and I'm looking for3ward to them. Their light is a bit funny-looking, but I guess we'll get used to it. At least it's bright, and I'll bet the price will come down as they gain popularity. As for the CFLs, they're not allowed in my house. I have a large cabinet in the garage, full of incandescent bulbs in every denomination, and I will continue to use them as long as they last. I'm trying to accumulate enough to last the rest of my life, because I just despise those hateful little curly things. They give a sickly gray/green light, take forever to reach full power, don't work with rheostats, and God forbid you should break one, unless you have a Hazmat suit handy. As for them lasting ten years, as advertised, the best I've gotten out of one is a little over a year. I bought three when they first came out. Two have burned out, the third one is in my front hall bathroom as a night light, and when it dies, it's outta here. The last incandescent bulb that was in that fixture lasted several years. It's a scam, I tell ya, a scam!
Well, groceries await, better get them put away. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Good news for what could have been a bad situation, Spot. The lithotripsy (stone blaster) does a good job, just pulverizes the stone to little more than dust. The doc was right, a stone that size would never have passed. Not too many years ago, that would have required surgery, but now with the blaster, it's not necessary.
Honestly, about those confounded little curly bulbs, I'm guessing that the legislation requiring them and outlawing incandescents will be repealed. From what I've been reading, they're pretty much sitting on the shelves, after the initial surge when they first came out. People were eager to try them, expecting a big drop in their electric bills. Then when they saw how much the bulbs cost, and the drop in their bills wasn't evident, the honeymoon ended pretty quickly.
The whole scenario is ludicrous. Just Google them, and chase some of the links. Read about what you're supposed to do if you break one. Here's one link: http://www.energystar.gov/ia/products/lighting/cfls/downloads/CFL_Cleanup_and_Disposal.pdf (Just copy and paste.) Now, here's my favorite part. TAKE IT all to a recycle center specifically qualified to receive it. (Just try to find one!) If this isn't possible, you have another option, one that presumably renders it safe for disposal in the trash. You can enclose the first bag in another ziploc bag. Now, safely double-bagged, you can drop it in the trash, if your city allows it. If it's not allowed, you can rest assured most people will do it anyway, and it presumably will make its way to the city landfill. I guess we are to assume that the huge chugging bulldozers that crisscross the landfill all day long will not be able to penetrate those two plastic bags, so the mercury contained therein will never make it into the groundwater. My stars! How stupid do they think we are? And as for carbon footprints, what about the "footprint" my car will leave, as I drive to the end of the earth to locate that drop-off point? Silliest thing they've foisted off on us yet. Somebody stands to gain from all these new bulbs they're hoping to sell, and honeys and dears, it ain't the consumer. Well, enough of that.
Oh, one more thing about the bulbs. I think I mentioned a while back that at my hospital, they had installed can lights in the ceilings in our new-mom rooms, and fitted them with rheostats. Very nice, lights can be dimmed to a candlelight effect, babies love it. One problem - about the same time, they started putting CFL bulbs in whenever an old bulb burned out. Well, of course, they don't work with the rheostats, and we got lots of complaints. Finally, one night I called for a replacement bulb, and they put one of those bulbs in. A bit later, I got the follow-up email, asking if the request for service had been taken care of satisfactorily. Well, I answered it, as you might imagine. I told them how the service had been performed perfectly, but was still not satisfactory, because of the bulb that was used, and I proceeded to outline precisely how ridiculous it was to have spent all that money installing those fixtures and rheostats, only to foul them up with those silly bulbs. Evidently, Engineering forwarded my answer to someone who matters, because a couple of weeks later, all the CFLs in those fixtures were replaced with good old incandescent bulbs. It pays to speak up, I guess.
Blessings, friends. --Romeena

Lucy is headed off to surgery this morning so please continue to keep her in your prayers. She will be in a cast up to her knee after the surgery.
We have been keeping in contact because of the similarity of surgeries (foot/ankle) of her and Casey. She gave me a great idea to have Casey wear shorts after the surgery so I am going to buy him some basketball shorts for after surgery. He will be out of commission and on crutches or wheelchair for about 4 months.
Spot - hope poppa Spot feels relief soon. I have seen how painful they can be.
No rain here although parts of Ky and Oh got some - those lucky dogs.

We got more rain last night and it is raining this morning, MDC, but we didn't get as much as predicted and yesterday was actually sunny most of the day (darn it). My yard really needs rain.
Poor Casey will be on crutches for 4 months?! wow. Yep, you either buy shorts or cut off one leg of his pants, the choice is a no-brainer, right? All we ever wear around here is shorts. The kids wear basketball short about every day. I can usually get them to wear some long pants to church.
Thanks Possum, I will be careful but looks like things will be pretty calm here.
Better get Erin going for school.

Prayers this morning for Poppa SPOT and family. Having just dealt with this with Miss Beth a couple weeks ago, I know how scarey this can be. Thank goodness it was not heart related. Keep us posted on the lithotripsy (sp?). My Mom had to go through the laser litho a few years ago as she has stones that were too big to pass as well
A very rainy morning here on my end of the porch. Thunder and lighting woke me up BEFORE the alarm clock went off this morning. What a great morning to of been able to sleep late. I love sleeping when it is rainy like it is today.
Oh, well I am at work and both kids made it to school (driving in the rain and storm) safely so I shall not complain too loudly.
Prayers for Lucy's surgery.
Better get to work. Breakfast menu will be: pancakes, sausage, bacon, maple syrup, fresh fruit. coffee, tea, juice to drink.
Prayers all around today.

Good morning, porch! I guess we're getting the backlash of the weather Boo had. It has poured most of the night, and is still pouring like it's never going to stop. The sky is the color of old pewter, and there's very little wind. The rain is just falling straight down, in a solid wall. Water is standing two inches deep on my pathway out back, the pond is overflowing between the capstones, the last of the corn I put out for the doves is under water, and the outflow from the sump pump is a continuous geyser at the street. I'm surprised that no one has reported me for having my "sprinkler" running in the rain. Someone usually does, and I have to get an umbrella and go out and show the officer what the geyser is coming from. Admittedly, it does look a lot like a broken sprinkler head when it's spouting.
There are two tiny hummingbirds, duking it out over the one feeder that contains sugar water. In the rain, and they're out there fighting over it! The thing has four ports, you'd think they'd share, but oh no! They expend more energy chasing each other than they gain by their refueling efforts. Silly little adorable things.
TV has been going in and out all night and all morning. I'm on Dish Network, and in a storm this heavy, the satellites get obscured. No matter, I've got enough recorded that I won't lack for something to watch. I've got about 40 "Barney Miller" episodes - love that show!
Wow, the wind has suddenly really kicked up. I'm glad I've got Fatima folded up - that last gust would have lifted her right out of her stand! This should bring some limbs down - God will prune the trees today. I'm pretty safe, my tree-trimmer friend, Romaldo, has done some judicious pruning already, removing potentially dangerous limbs, but there's a HUGE cottonwood on the next street over that has never been topped, and has two crown limbs that have to be at least a hundred feet in the air. They're really whipping around - wouldn't surprise me if at least one went sailing.
These hummers are cracking me up! I haven't seen another bird all morning, they're all holed up somewhere, but those two tiny things, not as big as my pinky finger, are out there in the rain and the wind, arguing over a feeder! Amazing!
Blessings! --Romeena

So you have sprinkler police there? Wow, what next. I'm sure youve all heard by now about our homeowner here who is flying the historic "Don't Tread On Me" flag. The homeowners Assoc. has termed it "debris" and wants it down. He has refused, and thus, a "national" story! Well, believe it or not, the aclu stepped in to DEFEND him, but he doesnt want their help, and so the
"standoff" continues!

September 08, 2010 - Msg 80723:
Howdy, porch. The rain has stopped here, at least for now, though the news is saying it may return. The storm centers are moving east, are now on the eastern side of Dallas and moving toward Tyler. We've had a lot of flooding - I've been watching a rather dramatic rescue in an apartment complex in Arlington, which is just southwest of where I live. The whole lower level of the complex is under water, cars are completely submerged, and water is roaring through the streets of the complex like a river. The fire department has positioned a ladder truck on a high point of land, and extended the ladder horizontally to the porch roof of a first-floor apartment. They're bringing the people off the second floor to the ladder and guiding them across the ladder to the top of the firetruck and then helping them down.
My water evacuation system is working - the water that was standing on the pathway and everywhere else has been carried off, but the sump pump is still working almost non-stop, as the drain lines are pulling the sub-surface water off. With the clay sub-soil we have in this area, without that system my yard would be a bog for two weeks or more, everything would rot and the whole thing would be stinking in a few days, like old shrimp shells. I've lived with that - thus the drainage system. It seems a shame to drain off all that rainwater and send it into the sewers, but there's nothing else to do. Wish I could send it to you, hm.
No, MDC, we don't actually have sprinkler police, but when someone sees what they think is a sprinkler running when it shouldn't, they often call the police, who will send a not-terribly-interested officer out to investigate. I show them what the spouting water really is, they just wish me well and move on. Only once has an officer gotten a bit officious with me, insisting that the water spouting out of the pipe was coming from a sprinkler. I pointed out that it was located in a strange place for a sprinkler head - right at the curb, and tipped so the water would go over the curb. Also, I led him on a backtrack to the buried barrel that houses the pump, and from there to the catch basin in the back that allows debris to settle out, and all the way back to the two intake ports in the far back of the yard. He had to accept it at that point, but couldn't resist a little lecture on the way back to the front yard, about the folly of wasting water, and why didn't I just catch that water and use it for watering? Catch it in what? The buried barrel holds about fifty gallons, then the pump comes on and empties it. In a moderate rain, it fills up and empties about every five minutes, because the house has total gutters and they all feed to the barrel, in addition to draining the standing water in the yard. Sometimes it can't keep up, never empties the barrel and just spouts constantly. Where, pray tell, would I store that much water? I'd have to have an empty swimming pool! Silly man.
Prayers for the concerts, REV. Sure am looking forward to October here! --Romeena

It rained here today too. (I was right there in it).
I don't like those curly bulbs either.
I know a feller at my work that has had kidney stones. Twice. The first time he went to the emergency room, because the pain was so bad that he thought he was dying and he didn't know what it was. They quickly figured out what it was and hooked him up to IV's of fluid or whatever is in those things and gave him pain meds so he could get relief from the pain. He ended up staying in the ER for 6 or 8 hours or something like that and he finally passed it, and they sent him home. Well, it happened again about a year later. This time, having been thru it once before and knowing what it was, he just stayed home and "medicated" himself. He laid in a comfy recliner, had the wife run out and buy some light beer, and he started drinking. It helped with the pain, and the liquid helped to push the durn thing thru. He said it still took about 6 or 8 hours, but at least he was home, not racking up a bill for the emergency room. Anyhow, I always think of that story when people talk about kidney stones. I'm sure the nurses among us would say that that was a bad idea, to diagnose himself, but he was pretty sure what it was, having gone thru it so recently.

Wow, that guy was tough Hazel! Bruce had a kidney stone once and he was a real mess. I remember getting ready to take him to the ER in the middle of the night because he was in agony and while I was getting dressed, Sean (who was about 4 at the time) said, "Mama, why is Dad lying in the floor crying like a naked dog?"....which was a pretty fair assessment. Bruce passed the stone in the ER while totally zonked with Morphine. Glad we had insur@nce.
