Just stopping by and hoping you all were behaving yourselves while I was away on my mission trip to Nicaragua. We had a wonderful time ministering to the villagers there. This was my second year to go to this particular town, and it was so nice to see they remembered us. Babies had arrived and babies had grown up to be toddlers. The best part was that 350 decisions for Christ were made as the Word of Life students counseled the people while they waited to see the Drs. Shift started out great, but around midnight I got an ER admit who was, in hospital vernacular, a train wreck. I'm glad I'm off tonight, and with any luck, she'll have been transferred to another floor by the time I go back Wednesday night.

New Neighbor, may God bless you for your mission efforts. I know the scene well, though my endeavors were in another country. Just kinda makes you feel good all over, doesn't it, and humbles you at the same time. One thing is for sure, you come home with a renewed appreciation for the good old U.S.A. Sounds like you had some spectacular results - praise the Lord!

Well, guess I'll feed the puppies, then hit the hay. I have a doctor appointment at 3:15, so won't get to sleep very long, but I don't need to. Just two or three hours will do. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

August 17, 2010 - Msg 80354: You know, Ro, I was reading a book last night that was talking about the billions in the world who haven't heard the gospel and some testimonies of people who made a huge difference by praying. You remember in the gospels when Jesus tells his disciples to pray the Lord of the Harvest, that he would send workers into the fields because the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Interesting that he made that particular request because he had just been talking to them about the mass of people who were like sheep without a shepherd and he had compassion for them. He didn't say "pray for these people", he said pray for workers to reach these people...pray for the church to make some sacrifices to reach a lost world...pray for Christians who are willing to go (like NN and Ro). He was putting the cart before the horse. I read a story that just astounded and humbled me about a missionary who went to South Korea, where there has been great revival for years now. The Christian leaders there estimate that about half the population of South Korea has been converted to Christianity and at a faster rate than conversions to Islam. The missionary was in his motel room the first night there and he was awakened at around 4am..he went to the window and could see a huge sports arena filled with people shouting and carrying on and he thought, 'what kind of people have sports events in the middle of the night?!' but next morning he asked the desk clerk about it and was told that it was the usual gathering of Christians for their prayer meeting! Wow...those people are praying and seeing great revival. It is possible with God and with prayer. If billions have not heard the good news, and if there is a great spiritual decline in this country, could it be because Christians aren't devoted to prayer here in our busy, easy American lifestyle? I am asking myself this question because to really be devoted to fervent prayer, I will have to move pretty far out of my comfort zone. It is going to cost me some time and some sleep but I think most of us have yet to realize the power of prayer and that one person's prayer can make a huge impact for the kingdom of God. "The effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous (Christian) man/woman availeth much".

Better finish the laundry and get some chores done.

I am praying that the Lord would keep reminding us of the great need in the world because we don't have it right there in front of us everyday and tend to lose sight of the great commission to go to the world. I think of it like this: If I am relaxing in my lawn chair on the banks of a beautiful river and about to snooze off, I have no desire to jump in the river...I'll just stay right here where I'm comfortable, but let's say someone's little child falls in and I see it struggle, I will be in that water in about 2 seconds to save it. I, like any of us would be out of my comfort zone so fast to save someone that we see in danger. Lord give us the spiritual vision to see those who need saving in the world, and now. If we can't go, show us ways to give more of our resources, and time in prayer, Lord.

August 17, 2010 - Msg 80364: Good evening, porch. Boo, you're absolutely right about South Korea. They are sending missionaries to the United States, and have been doing so for some time now. How's that for a reversal of things? An indictment upon us, I think.

I know I've mentioned this before, but my church hosts several congregations of ethnic groups. We have a Spanish-speaking congregation, of course, no surprise there. However, we also have an African congregation (Nigerian, I believe) and a rapidly growing Thai church. They meet in various places around our campus. They remain unto themselves for the most part, but lately there has been some overlap, with folks from those groups coming in and joining our mainstream congregation. Two Thai girls were baptized during our service last Sunday. I can understand them wanting to remain in their comfort zone, but they are most welcome in our services, and I think they know that. What I think is happening, as their English improves, they join our congregation for two reasons. One, to help improve their grasp of the language, and another, to help them blend and assimilate into our culture. I hope they will always honor their own culture, but to really become Americans, they need to absorb ours as well. The times, they are a-changing.

REV, I'm so happy that the concerts are going well, and am really looking forward to your visit here. I was hoping you'd have an extra day on the weekend, but carrying your message comes first. Since our little Thursday night group starts early and breaks up early, maybe we can sneak in an hour or two with those friends I was telling you about after it's over. That is, if you're not just worn out, and if you don't have to take off at the crack of dawn on Friday. I noticed your next concert is in the area, so maybe we can make it work. I know you'd enjoy them, and you and Alan could just jam for a while. Gosh, just what you wanted to do, I know - play some more!

Well, guess I'll go feed these little hounds, and myself. They're sitting here, shifting from spot to spot, waiting for me to get the idea. Starr is a bit more patient, but Bentley keeps heaving big huffy, doggy sighs, the silly goof.

Ro...will be in Austin the night before your church (just confirmed). So I'll be driving up from there on Thursday. What time do I start at your church? And yes, I'll be in Mansfield the night after being with you folks so it's not that far (thank the Lord!). That week I am booked for concerts on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Eight concerts in a week....my wife says I am crazy for booking that many in a week....lol. But as I'm fixin to leave for work, I wouldn't be able to stay and chat about that. Have you guys ever seen an Amaranthus? It's kind of a tall, tropical looking plant with purpleish dread-lock looking flowers. Just beautiful. I've got 9 of them in various spots around the yard this year. Also, for the 2nd year in a row I am growing Gerbella Daisies. They're my favorite kind of daisy. I do love flowers.

Hazel-I'm not sure if I have seen Amaranthus. It sounds nice though. We sure could use a green-thumb on this end of the Porch. Our yard is about 90% shade and we're trying to grow a "flower" garden in the back yard. It's been slow going so far but we are moving forward. If we're successful we'd like to have a lawn with very little grass and lots of moss and shade (obviously) flowers or shrubbery. Do ya have any suggestions?

Asa- I was called a "hope and changer" yesterday. I was at get together and said, in passing, that I agreed with Obama on the mosque issue. See, ya call me a Progressive and word spreads quick.

Boo-About your post, I have always felt small inside when I hear others stories of Evangelism. I try to give as much as we can, which probably falls short, but the getting hands dirty, I know falls short.

August 18, 2010 - Msg 80376: Good Wednesday afternoon porch! Just stopping by for a minute during my lunch break. Hoping the afternoon goes well and I will be ready to go home about 5ish.

Raining on my end of the porch, and I do mean raining. We have had flash flooding around our area that has been pretty severe. There has been 5 deaths over the past week due to the flooding. One was a young child about 4 or 5 I believe and then yesterday a 16 year old boy died after falling into a storm drain. such tragic losses.

more heavy rain expected this afternoon and evening. Hopefully the rains will clear up before the racing begins in Bristol for the next 3-4 days. All those who camp at and around the track hopefully will pay attention to the warnings.

Supper menu will be: stuffed pork chops, baked sweet potatoes, green beans, corn, SLAW, sliced tomatoes, fried okra and broccoli/rice casserole. homemade biscuits with butter. chocolate layer cake for dessert. coffee, tea, lemonade to drink. supper at 6pm

August 19, 2010 - Msg 80387: Thelma Lou is getting too thin, MDC. Bruce and I were just discussing today that we are going to have to do something to fatten her up a little. I think the eager little goats don't let her get enough of her food so we are trying to figure out how to mount a trough for her high enough to keep the goats out. She is probably due to be wormed again and that might help. We went out there last weekend and gave her a good bath and sprayed her down with Bronco (to keep the flies off) and she hated every minute of it. You would think she would enjoy it in this heat but she did NOT.

Very sad story, Possum. I had not heard about it...mom's killing their own children..such an anomaly. Sign of our times, I guess. The world is going crazy.

Went to church tonight and we had "family night" and all the kids and adults gathered in the fellowship area with the grand piano and our very talented pianist played requests from the old time hymns. A few solos were sung and there were many requests. It was a really nice time as a church family. My friend Teresa was there...I don't know if I have mentioned her but she is an old friend from high school that I recently met up with again and she has been going out to the drug rehab with Keith and me. She is a sweet Christian and a single parent with teen kids. We just love her and she loves us and she is joining our church on Sunday. Bless her, she does not have an easy time working and trying to raise kids on her own. She is recently divorced from an abusive spouse. The husband before that (the father of her kids) died of cancer and she went too soon into another marriage before she really knew the man. Proved to be a terrible mistake. She is on her feet now and raising her kids right.

Well, guess I should be in bed...see you all in the morning.

August 19, 2010 - Msg 80394: Good afternoon, porch. I'm sitting here in wet clothes, under a ceiling fan, trying to cool off. I went outside for "just a minute" to pay Eddie and chat with him a little, and of course, got involved in something and stayed out there too long. My neighbor to the east is out of town, sometimes for weeks at a time. Her husband is about 99% confined to a wheelchair. He can stand and transfer, but walking is out of the question. He manages, though, and has a man who comes in several times a week to help him bathe, etc. He does have one of those scooter chairs.

Anyway, one consequence of the situation is that their yard is baking in this heat, and is almost dead. They have a sprinkler system, but it has been broken for years, and my friend Joe said it may be beyond repair after so long. Wires are corroded, lines are broken, heads are gone, etc. So, while talking to Eddie, I looked down between the two houses, and was just appalled at what I saw. I have a drip line along the side of my house, so my ferns and things are doing well. Neighbor's side, not so much. There was a lovely little shrub - never have identified it - that shielded their kitchen bay window from the street. A very pretty little thing, and sadly, it's almost dead. Their canna lilies - same thing, and the grass is crunchy and brown. Well, I can't stand it. So, I unreeled a 100-ft. hose from the connection in front of my house, attached a circular sprinkler and dragged the whole mess around there. In positioning the sprinkler so it would hit that shrub, I got soaked, but I don't care. It felt great! I've got the water regulated so it just reaches the walls of both houses, so my stuff is getting a good soaking too. The dripline is nice, but now and then they need to just be drenched. I'll go out in a while, and drag the sprinkler out some toward the street, and keep doing that until the whole area between the houses is watered. I'm worried about my neighbor's foundation, with everything being so dry.

So now, wet old me is sitting enjoying the fan on the wet clothes, and I'm sitting here watching ridiculously beautiful butterflies as they visit the pentas and lantana out back. Butterflies just LOVE both of those flowers. Also, there's a really hot hummingbird war going on! One little flying jewel found the feeder a couple of weeks ago, and has claimed it as her own. Another came in yesterday, and the battle was on. They're both females, and they really do fight. They're so tiny, not as big as my thumb, and just get in terrible battles! So funny!

Tonight is dinner at the church, and it's a covered-dish meal, so guess I'd better go whomp something up to take along. I have no idea what, but I'll think of something. Blessings, friends. --Romeena
August 19, 2010 - Msg 80395: Oh, Boo. Does Thelma Lou have any grazing? She needs grass to graze on, and she should have hay as well as grain. I don't mean to intrude, but you were asking earlier, when you first got her, so I gathered that caring for critters of the equine persuasion is not something you're familiar with. Another idea is to plant something on the land that will supplement her feed. My dad used to sow oats on our acreage for my horse, but I think you can also plant fescue, rye or any of the winter grasses. Try to put the seed out just before a rain is expected, and you should get a good cover. Keep the animals off the area until the grass is established. Otherwise, they'll nibble the tiny shoots and you'll never get any real grass. That fancy rig Bruce bought should have attachments that will scratch the surface of the soil - then you scatter the seed, and follow up by dragging the area, to very lightly cover the seed. If it gets rain in a day or two, you'll have gooooood graze for old Thelma Lou. Wow, sure does take me back. I can see my buddy Ace now, enjoying the oats my dad planted. He was my pal in those days, and we went many a mile together. --Romeena
August 19, 2010 - Msg 80396: What a sweet neighbor you are, Romeena. :-) All advice on things "equine" invited, Ro. You know, I read different things and never know what information is right. I read not to give them hay somewhere...she does graze and has grass to graze on but its not as plentiful as outside the fence. I am going to bring her out and let her graze closer to the house. I'm sure that would do the trick and I am also going to get some more sweet feed to give her now and then. Bruce is planting more grass back there and actually digging up the sprinkler lines that run off of the septic systems to water that back area so more grass will grow. I will tell Bruce what you suggested about planting before a rain is expected and what to plant. The oats is a good idea. Thanks...oh, and Thelma Lou thanks you. :-)

MDC, I don't think Thelma Lou is grieving because she is constantly grazing so I think it is more of an issue of not enough good grass and the goats fighting her for her food.

Just finished helping Erin get rid of outgrown clothes and toys and cleaning her room...always a real chore and it is so hot outside that the air conditioner in here can't keep up with it. I feel like I am living in Arizona (only more humid!).

August 19, 2010 - Msg 80403: auh2o, I have a few "shade" area problems in my yard also. Not 90% shade like you, but still we have flower beds that are now close to where a formerlly small tree is now big and also "color spot" areas where I want to put a flower pot, but it happens to be in the shade. Anyhow, I've had good luck with the annual flower "Four O'clock". It's just a beautiful flower, with the perttiest scent you ever did smell. I've got them in various places in my yard also, and the ones that are in mostly shade do pretty well. They aren't as tall as the ones in full sun, but they still bloom beautifully. They're called "4 O'clocks" because they are suppose to open up in the afternoon. Mine open up around 6:30 each night, and are in full glory until about 10:00 the next morning. Also my cosmos do pretty well in partial shade. Another thing is the double petunia. The regular petunia requires full sun, but the "double" version can tolerate partial shade. Try it! I've got the Peppermint striped version and it's very pretty. I will try to get some pics of my flowers to Romeena.

Hazel, I am sure with you living so far north and me so far south we would probably be growing different types of flowers. It is so tropical here most of the year. Seems like most of what i see here is Hibiscus and some crepe myrtle (love that one!). Petunias thrive and some forms of jasmine. I had some geraniums and I killed them. :-(... Actually the dogs wouldn't leave them alone. They would strip the flowers off, crazy dogs. Bruce is so aggravated because they chew up everything. He found a place where they had chewed on the front porch railing last week and he is trying to find something to spray on it to keep them from chewing. He bought something from the pet store and it didn't work. I keep telling him to try VICKS. :-) No man or beast would want to chew on that stuff.

Better go get the dishwasher started and put i a load of laundry...

August 20, 2010 - Msg 80412: Good afternoon, porch. John Masters, I'm glad you're feeling better, but get you some Cort-Aid or some house brand of a Hydrocortisone cream, and put it on that sore nose. You will be amazed at how quickly it will heal. Good stuff!

auh2o, I'm not sure about conditions where you live, but here in Texas, believe it or not, we do have shady areas. Hot, but shady. I've had good luck with hostas in the shade. Some of them bloom, though the blooms are less than spectacular. However, the foliage can be really interesting, ranging from cream/green mixes to blue to all shades of green. I have one called "Guacamole" that is exactly the color of a good guacamole. Just Google "Hosta" and a whole world of possibilities will open u Also, my impatiens do very well in the shade, and they come in a wide variety of colors. Begonias come in a shade-loving variety as well. Just look for the light green foliage. Bronze foliage loves the sun, green foliage loves shade. Stroll through a good garden center, and stay in the shaded areas. If it's displayed in the shade, it's probably a shade-loving plant. As for hostas, the deeper the shade, the better they like it.

My wife and I went to a little festival in my small town tonight and ate. Since the town I'm in was once called (believe it or not) "Frog Level", the festival is called the Hopping festival. So they were serving plates of frog legs or chicken. I had the frog legs and the wife had chicken. She want eat frog legs but I love them. I grew up going frog gigging and coming home and having my mom frying them up. Good stuff.

Hey Folks

We had real fun day, took the kids to the Buffalo Zoo. I just love the zoo.

Hazel & Romeena-Thanks so much for the gardening tips. I'm gonna look into the "Four O'clock" ya mentioned, Hazel. Ro, we do have some hostas planted and have good luck with them but we see the same results with the blooms. We also have a bit of trouble with wildlife. We have to plant only deer resistant plants or buy spring they be gone for sure. During the winter we can actually watch those beautiful creatures eat the ivy off the front porch wall. I hate to chase them off (so I don't) I figure they must be good and hungry to get that close to the house. If ever ya'll wanna share more thoughts on the matter please do.

I wasn't trying to start a moulage about the mosque issue. I just thought it kinda funny, being called a "liberal" twice in one week. I just don't see how we can legally stop a mosque from being built. I think it's a bad shortsighted idea to build one there. However, if we play by the rules then we all have the same right to make mistakes.

JM-I don't believe we have a Sonic around here but count me in for a sundae anytime.
