I just have to respond to Boo, about the dislike of Season 5 of TAGS. Seriously? Like all the seasons, there are one or two lemons in the bunch, but there are many episodes that can make you overlook those few lemons. "Barney's Bloodhound", "Family Visit" (heck, that's a cult favorite amongst TAGS fans); "Barney's Uniform"; "Goober Takes a Car Apart"; and my personal favorite: "The Case of the Punch in the Nose". Yep, Helen was a drag, but thankfully she wasn't in all that many ep's...

Haha...yep, Helen was a drag, Hazel. I like Barney's Bloodhound and Family Business but I don't care much for the others you mentioned for some reason. One other in season five that is good, though, is Opie's Three Wishes...funny.
I don't know how to explain it exactly but it just seems like season five is missing some of the light-heartedness of the other seasons...probably just me.
Sorry you are feeling dizzy, Ro..hope that resolves soon. So glad you found the pup in your pond before it was too late. Mercy, that would have been just terrible! I, too, just get so upset at irresponsible pet owners who let their dogs wander. They just don't realize how much can happen. My neice, Amy (Emily's mom) has a beautiful lab named Rock and he keeps escaping from the yard no matter what they do. They don't want to chain him up but it seems like if a dog is really determined to get out, he will. The other night he got out and got rolled by a car. He got a bad gash to his leg and a road rash on his underside but that was all. He was really lucky. We have probably all known of animals that fell into harm from running free. So far, ours are pretty good about not digging out because they have lots of room to roam but if they really are determined to get out, they will when they get older.
Well, busy day today for a father's day. Poor bruce has felt miserable all day but at least he felt up to sitting at the table and having lunch with the rest of us. MIL made an outstanding meatloaf and I made fresh greenbeans with new potatoes that I cooked with a little pork for seasoning (wow, good) and we had some sweet corn on the cob and biscuits and sweet tea. You talk about good southern eatin'! Woo-hoo, that was some good grub, I'm telling you. We had chocolate cake for dessert (bruce's favorite). It is now 10pm and I am still full and won't eat again until tomorrow. I guess it kind of laid on my chest...hehe.
Have to drive some kids to camp tomorrow in Palacious (Ro and DES will know where that is). It is Erin's first year to go to summer camp and to say she is excited would be a huge understatement. I don't know how she is going to fall asleep tonight. We went to the walmart today and bought her a little travel case with those little travel size shampoo, and toothpaste, etc. and her own sleeping bag. She will have a blast because that's the kind of kid she is...always on the go, never tired, and in her element when she is socializing with other kids. Please say a little prayer for her and for me, though, for her safety and for my nerves. This will be the first time she was ever away from me for more than a night or two.
Better go check on her and make sure she is trying to get to sleep!

Good Monday morning porch dwellers.
I hope you all had a good weekend and a wonderful Daddy's day. I did. I have been blessed with two of the sweetest Daughters, who have produced some mighty fine Grandkids that a man could ever hope for. Top that off with a wonderful loving wife, why it's just icing on the cake. Just like Barney declared, "nothing like and adoring woman to build a man up!" HA! Old Barn is brilliant.
Sorry I missed your call N.N. Your name didn't show up on my caller I.D. or I'd have answered for sure. I must admit though, I ain't answering if a name don't show up until after Tuesday. Our Primary elections are Tuesday and these recorded messages are driving me nuts. I bet we get 4 a night. Madness I tell ya. I guess it could be worse. At least they ain't driving around town with a bullhorn telling me who to vote for. :)
Boo, sorry Bruce was sick over the weekend. Was it the pip? Hope he gets better soon.
I guess I'm one of the few who likes TAGS in the early years the best. Mind you, I don't dislike the later black and white episodes (especially the ones Hazel mentioned, Family Visit is maybe my second favorite episode) but there was for me at least, something quaint and special about the first year or so. I know Andy and Aunt Bee had a terrible fake southern drawl, but there was just a special innocence there that has always connected for me. And I just loved Emma Brand and Mayor Pike. Two very wonderful characters who left us too soon. Now as far as Helen goes, there were some episodes where she was a major pain, and others where I could tolerate her some.
Ro, I'm sure sorry your dizziness is back. I have had that come and go several times since my head injury, but never to the degrre you described when you almost fell out of bed from it. I hope it doesn't get that bad for you. Have you got a sinus infection going on or something maybe?
Ky girl, how are you doing? I don't have any grren maters yet to offer you. Maybe in a few weeks.
Lucy, sorry to read about your burns. Yikes, that must have been scary and very painful. Hope you heal quick like.
MDC,I am disgusted with all of the negative things being said and done concerning your State, when all you folks are trying to do is a job the Feds refuse to do. I'm behind you folks all the way.

Good afternoon, porch. For the record, I'm feeling fine now, dizziness gone completely. I even went out and cleaned the pond filter! Actually, MDC, I'm pretty tired of the dadburned thing myself! It's the heat and sunlight. Once that water gets warm, and the sun shines on it part of the day, the algae proliferates like you wouldn't believe. Oh, and as for Antivert and dramamine, those are both actually over-the-counter forms of meclizine. The difference is in the dosage. It's a pretty effective drug, and typically will relieve a dizzy spell in an hour or so. It may not stop it completely, but it at least brings it down to a manageable, functional level. When it began Sunday morning, I couldn't stand up. After taking the meclizine and going back to sleep for an hour or so, I could stand and walk, but just couldn't make any sudden moves or bend down. I was able to go to Eloise's with the family, just pretty much stayed in a chair most of the day. No way I could have worked last night, but I was able to secure cancellation, so that was a blessing. Today, I'm fine.
I'll be working tonight - have to leave early and go by a dollar store on the way. Our team is leaving for Mongolia in a few days (wish I was going) and I'm going to buy a bunch of reading glasses in various strengths to send with them. The people over there really need and appreciate them. So, even though I can't make the trip anymore, I can do a few little things. I remember seeing the joy on one old fellow's face when he got his glasses, and realized he could see up close again. He was grinning from ear to ear. I guess it's hard to mend a piece of harness or something if you can't see up close. Plus, some of those folks can and do read. Not all, but some.
About Helen, her anger about the "engagement" didn't bother me so much. She had a right to be miffed about that, I think. It was the little sniffy, pouty fits she threw when things weren't going her way - the way she would just withdraw from Andy, wouldn't go to a movie, or for a walk or anything else until he agreed to do whatever she was wanting him to do. Then when he'd agree, she'd just be all smiles again. The writers even acknowledged that "attitude" of hers once, when Andy said to her, "This is ONE argument you're not going to win!" I guess that little 'tude of hers bothered me because it was one thing that just would never have flown around here. My mom didn't do that to my dad, and I knew better than to even try it with Dale. It's so, well, "high-school."
Well, guess I'll get a little nap before heading for work. Blessings, friends. --Romeena
June 21, 2010 - Msg 79617:
Oh, MDC. Didn't see you there. No, the dizziness isn't the pacer. I did think about that, and checked my pulse. It was a steady 92, which is normal for me. The pacer is a demand pacer, so it only fires if my own pulse drops below 70. No, the dizziness is an inner-ear thing, and it runs in my family. My dad had it, his episodes were severe but mercifully not very frequent. His sister, however, had full blown Meniere's syndrome, with very severe episodes occurring every week or so, lasting a couple of days, and she had to be put to bed and sedated when they occurred. Violent dizziness, racking nausea, just pure misery, bless her sweet heart. She put up with that for many years. She was told early on that eventually she would lose all hearing in one ear, and when that happened, the attacks would stop. That's exactly what happened. She went completely deaf in her right ear, and had no further attacks of vertigo. Weird. --Romeena

Exactillioso, Ro...the attitude was so "high school", not to mention bratty. She acted like a spoiled child. I get mad at Helen on a regular basis but the worst for me is the one I mentioned when she is jealous about Gloria. That one really gets me miffed. I also don't like it when she won't let Andy explain things, and then remember the time she got so mad at Andy when he was jealous of that other teacher guy that came and did some work with Helen? She really gave it to Andy about it when she does the same thing, only much worse. I mean its not like they were already married. She acts like she owns him. Now, I have often wondered why they remained engaged for so long...I don't think that would have happened in real life. I guess it just gave the writers more to write about....OR-Andy had second and third thoughts about marrying a jealous, pouty woman like Helen. ;-) I watching the colored ep the other day about the time they found the newspaper article about Helen getting arrested in college and I was suprised how well she took that...the first time I saw that one I felt sure she would blast Andy's head right off after that school board meeting...go figure?
One thing about Helen's character that I really like is that she is very nice to Aunt Bee and often takes her side when Andy is whining about something.

Hey again- we're doing "Best"and "Worst" of Helen now? Okay..
My take on "best" Helen- I'm with MDC, it's the "Cave Rescue".
Worst would be several instances- the "Running With" scene on the Porch, her reaction to Flora's flirting with Andy at the Diner ( "whatever's the yummy one!"),and her running away from Andy out in the woods (The one where Andy & Alice slipped out of the cabin & were out all night). I could name more, but I'll leave it at those 3!
You're right, Boo, Helen treated Aunt Bee pretty good. Seems like it was Andy who saw the worst side of her.
Been meaning to tell you that I'm so glad to get the Jubi update-bless her heart! Sounds like she's doing very well. Thank the Lord!
Hope you feel better, Ro.

Thanks for the incant, MDC. (That could only be you!) It must have worked, because I'm not dizzy at all. Well, not in the conventional sense, anyway. I am, however, a happy camper. The hospital called at five and offered me cancellation. We're in a new pay period, so it was very easy for me to accept it. One more dose of meclizine and a good night's sleep, plus that neat incant, and the vertigo should be total history by morning. So right now, instead of taking report on a batch of patients, I'm sitting here at my window, watching my beach umbrella swaying in a gentle breeze as it shades the pond, a little squirrel friend is happily munching sunflower seeds, and I see that the white crape myrtle is beginning to bloom. Stargazer lilies are blooming on the west fence, Cherry Parfait rose has a nice bouquet going, and uh-oh, here comes another squirrel. This will get interesting. I just love this window!
Thanks for the tip on the reading glasses, MDC. I can usually find some decent ones at the dollar stores for - yep, $1 each - but sometimes they don't have many, and I usually get about 50 pair. The quality is about the same as the drugstore stock, maybe not quite as good, but close enough. For the mission, quantity is at least as important as quality. They will cherish what they get and take good care of them, so they'll last them a long time. They don't throw them around like we would do here. I'm proud to be able to say that Eloise and I started the practice of taking glasses over there. When we went on the first trip in 2004, God sent me the idea at the last minute, and the day before we left, we bought about fifty pair between us, and just tucked them into our luggage. We were amazed at what a hit they were. The next year, we enlisted help from friends, and we bought more, and took about 250 pair. Every single pair was given out, and we could have used more. We haven't gone since 2005, but we have sent glasses with those who did go each year, and the reports are always the same - all given out, could have used more. It's amazing, and is such a small thing for us to do, yet means so much to those dear people.
Well, I think I'll take my little sprinkler remote and go outside and do a trouble-check. I carry the remote and just walk the yard, testing out each zone to make sure all the heads are intact, no geysers spouting, and nothing blocked. You'd be amazed what I find. The thing runs at night, so I never see how it's working unless I do one of my checks.
Blessings, friends. --Romeena

Thanks for the breakfast, Maude!
Possum, I had forgotten about the one where Helen runs off into the woods not letting Andy explain but the stupid way Andy was acting just fueled things. Really ridiculous episode, I think. Just a little too adult for Mayberry...you know, the impression that Andy and Alice had slipped off into the night to do the deed. I didn't like that at all.
Good incant, MDC...see if you can do one that rhymes with "discombobulated".
Glad you are feeling better, Ro. I only had that problem once and it was miserable. The meclizine did help, though.
PH, I looked at those facebook sites, PH. Funny! I loved the post by someone calling him self "Weaver" saying that she never shopped in his store but went to Raliegh, or something like that.
Boy, it feels as hot as death valley out there today! I was out feeding the goats/donkey last evening and it wasn't bad but during the day, wow. That mama goat is getting humongous. She has got to be further along or is having more than two kids. Wish I had a goat expert around here to come and take a look at her. I just don't know how she could make it till September but I don't know enough about goats to know for sure but I swear sometimes her sides are as high as her spine. Either she's pregnant or has one bad case of the bloats. The little goat keeps escaping from the fence out back and we have not seen how she is getting out. You look at the back and she is out, then later she is back in again. I hope she doesn't get hurt while she is out.
I have been missing Erin since I took her to camp yesterday. Not too much, but a little when bedtime came around. I like having my little chicks safely tucked in their beds at night but gotta let them grow and leave the nest a little at a time. I am sure she is having the time of her life hanging out with her little friends. I hope she puts on sunscreen! The camp is right on the water and pretty hot.
Better get some chores done around here. I already slept in too late.

MDC, that incant of gratitude just thrilled me! Thanks for that, brother, it's beautiful.
Roger Hanover? Mercy, what a pain! I could put up with him for just about five minutes, if I tried real hard. Unfortunately, I have a cousin who is so much like Roger it's creepy. One stale joke after another, and watch out for the con, because it's coming! Haven't heard from him in several years, and that's fine with me. It's sad, really.
My plumeria tree is blooming, finally. Guess a couple of buds managed to escape that marauding squirrel's teeth. It sure is pretty. There's an iris blooming, too. It's "Total Recall" and it's very rare, in that it blooms not once, not twice, but three times a year! One in early spring, once about now, and again in the fall. Most rebloomers only bloom twice, spring and fall. I've already put a pup of Total Recall in the rebloomer bed we made, but I may move another one in there, just because of that third bloom. It would be nice to have it up here closer to the house right now.
Well, Eloise and I are going to go mouse around a little after while, guess I'd better get dressed. I'm going to pick up a small external hard drive for my dish network receiver. My receiver is fried, will work only with a fan blowing on it, otherwise it overheats. Dish will replace it, but I've got a lot of recorded material on the DVR, and when I replace the unit all of that will be lost. So - I'll hook up an external drive, transfer it over, and then install the new receiver. Dish Network does make a small one-time charge for that, but once that's paid, I can transfer anything I want, anytime. My son has done this, and has a wonderful library of movies stored. I don't have many movies, but I've got the "Blue Planet" series, the "Life" series, and a lot of episodes of "Barney Miller" - one of my favorites, and it's rarely shown anymore.
Ha! I just turned on the sprinkler zone that hits my west fence because some things were looking a bit dry, and a whole clutch of little half-grown robins ran out from beneath a bush! Seems to me they're a little late - they should be up and on their own by now. My guess would be that something got their mom's first nest, so she started over and tried again. They'll do that sometimes, but it makes for a late hatching.
Thanks, everyone, for all your kind concern during my "dizzy days". All gone now.
Well, gotta hit the shower. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Oh yes, the little goat responds to the feed bucket!! I will try what you suggest. I know it will work, thanks. They are fun to feed but they get pretty excited. They love it when you feed them from your hand. I had some cucumbers that I accidently froze in the bottom of the frige yesterday so I thawed and sliced them and the goats loved them! I hand fed them the slices because if they fell on the ground and got sand on them, the goats left them alone. Strawberry is the boss and gets most of the treats but by and feeding them treats I make sure they all get some. The other day, Strawberry was getting assertive about the feed bucket and stepped on my foot (I was wearing flip-flops, being the idiot that I am sometimes). Ouch! Most of the time it is just plain fun, though. They have gotten to where if they even see my car come up the driveway and me get out, they start hollering for me.

I was watching Andy Saves Gomer the other night, and it starts with Andy reading a letter from barney to Floyd and Opie. For the early '60s it's pretty amazing that Barney brings up waitresses in peek-a-boo blouses! And then they even have Opie ask what that is! Shocking! Then afet they make Opie leave, Andy and Floyd read that part again! lol
Also it mentions barn winning a tin ink spot at skeeball.

Boo, that "Alice's Cabin" episode, or whatever it's called, is just plain looney, isn't it?!
Who is Romeenahm, Spot?? LOL

Speaking of s#x, I saw some stats today on TV concerning todays teens and their "hook-ups". So many kids are engaging in s#xual acts as casually as they would washing their hands. Disturbing...I only wish we could go back to Mayberry (minus the peek-a-boo blouses and girly mags).

ah, discombobulated. One of our favorite words around where I work. Not to find words to rhymme with it, just to use it to describe stuff. You all know I work in the court system, and one of the words the family law judges love to use is "discombobulated." I think one of the litigants must have used it to describe something back in the day, and now it's used to describe... oh just someone who has their paperwork, or their order, or their custody schedule, all mixed up...(you get the drift). Usually when it's used, the Judge will say "... and it was all discombobulated..." and the sentence is usually accompanied by rolling of the eyes, and perhaps the hands going up in a helpless gesture...

Right, MDC...its been easy not to watch TV the last two days...too darned busy. I watched a few minutes of Reba and it was decent...kind of stupid, but decent. I am reading a good book right now put out by Focus on the Family, called "How To Make Money From Home"...it was written by a homeschooling mom who chose to be her own boss instead of leaving the home each day to work. She share all sorts of helpful information for stay at home moms who want to supplement the family income and teach their kids how to be resourceful and be independant, making their own money. Interesting.
That's funny, Hazel. I'll bet you hear all sorts of ridiculousness (is that a word?) in your line of work and lots of stupid excuses from people.
Well, MIL is coming over this morning and I am babysitting Emily and her older sister this morning so I am trying to prepare myself while relaxing with my morning coffee...must face the music though.
Please say a prayer for my Erin. Poor little thing called me from camp last night and was trying to be brave but ended up crying on the phone and saying she missed me and wanted to come home. One more night, though and I will be picking them all up tomorrow. She is the youngest of the kids to go to camp and is pretty homesick even with her friends. Luckily, Miss Nanette is the sponsor that went with them. Miss Nanette is our children's minister at church and she is a teacher in the local elemetary school. She is the most patient, kindest woman you would ever want to meet. Erin will be fine with her...sometimes growing up is hard. You know, all kids are different, I guess, but Erin is one of those kids who can be away from me doing things, but at the end of the day, she wants mama. I was like that at her age and then when I turned about 10, it seemed like I was always gone and didn't miss mom at all.
Well, better get going...talk to you all later.

Ah, homesick campers! I went along to our church youth camp for two summers, as the camp nurse. I had my little "office" and the kids would get permission from their counselor, then come to see me with their ailment - most of which were imaginary. I saw a lot of mosquito bites and ant bites, and I remember one little girl who came to my door saying "I might have a headache." Mostly they were curious to see what was in the upstairs area where my office was. I finally made a rule that if their problem was one that they would call their mother about from school, then come on up. If not, deal with it. That eliminated the ant and mosquito bites, but the imaginary things continued. Maybe "imaginary" is misleading. In many cases, the problem was real to the child, but there was nothing wrong. They were just homesick. I remember one big strapping 16 year old boy, a friend of my son, well over six feet and about two hundred pounds, and he came to my door complaining of a stomachache. It was after "lights out" time, but he was almost in tears so the counselor had let him come to me. I gave him some Maalox and sent him back to his cabin. In about thirty minutes he was back, saying he really hurt, holding his stomach, looked so pitiful. I did notice though, he relaxed and quit holding his stomach when I would get him talking. So we talked a bit, and I sent him back to his cabin. Another half hour - here he was again, crying this time. I brought him in and sat him down, and asked him what he thought would make him feel better. That big old football player looked at me through his tears and sobbed that "if I could just talk to my mom, and tell her goodnight, I think I'd be okay." Aha! The phones were kept locked up, (no cell phones in those days) but I had a key, and I let him call his mother. He talked to her a few minutes, hung up and turned a smiling face to me and said, "I think I'll be fine now. I'm going back to bed." And he was fine indeed. I think that was the sweetest thing! I never told a soul at camp about it, of course, but later his mother (she was a good friend of mine) and I had a little tear-y laugh. Something is so right in a family when a child, especially a big old husky teenage boy, feels like that about his mother.
Hazel, how about sharing some courthouse stories with us? I'll bet you could tell some doozies. You can conceal enough details that you won't be abusing anyone's privacy, and I think they'd be fun to hear.
Well, guess I'd better go feed Toye Starr, and see if my new dish receiver has been left on the porch. My old one is fried, and they're supposed to be sending me a new one. The old one works, but only if I open the cabinet door and keep a box fan running on it! The living room looks lovely at the moment, as you can imagine. At least it's no cost to me to replace the thing, but I'm losing all the stuff I had recorded in the DVR. I bought an external hard drive, and hooked it up, but it won't transfer the data. I tried it out on the box in my bedroom, and it works, but it won't work on the faulty receiver. I guess that component is completely burned out. I can view the recordings, but it won't send them to the external device. Bummer. I had 176 episodes of "Barney Miller" recorded, and the "Blue Planet" and "Life" series. Rats.
Blessings, porch! --Romeena

I do, MDC. His parents are still my friends. They go to a different church now, but we're still in touch. The boy turned out to be a fine young man, is married and has a couple of kids of his own now. He and my David were buddies growing up, and though they're no longer close (he lives in another Texas town) they still communicate now and then, and meet when the church has a "come home" day or something. You're so right - train up a child....

I get to drive to camp tomorrow morning and pick up Erin! I can't wait to see the little pest. ;-)
I didn't get any calls from her today so I guess she is doing better.
I ended up not keeping Emily and her sister today because Emily was up vomiting last night. It worked out for the best because my SIL (Bruce's sister who has been having so many problems) came over having a panic attack and in a terrible emotional state. I felt very sorry for her. She recently moved to this county and has to find resources to help her here so I took her to MHMR and they saw her and are going to get her an appointment with a doctor who can help prescribe her the right medication and treatment but it will probably take at least 2 weeks. Bruce is making her stay here with us as his mother can't handle anymore right now. It is a tough situation because Vicki goes in and out of panic mode and needs lots of reassurance. She just went to see if she can sleep..I pray she can. Mental illness is such a cruel disease. Sometimes you just can't turn off the fear and anxiety. We are doing all we can and thankfully, she is now willing to accept treatment (thank you for your prayers). Interestingly enough, that episode I mentioned last week is something she has recollection of at all. It was almost like she had two different personalities...reminded me of the movie Sybil or something.
Well, I guess I should go relax for a bit and then try to get to bed early so I will be up for the drive to camp tomorrow. May you all have a peaceful, blessed Mayberry kind of evening. :-)

Thank you.
Vicki managed to sleep all night last night without the dreaded sleeping pills so I think she will probably be feeling more normal today. Thank you for those prayers. I don't think she has slept through the night in days. Bruce and I were talking last night about what to do for her and I feel frustrated how things are turning out. I think Bruce is going to get his siblings together for a meeting and they are going to get a plan together as to what we can do as a team, because we can't do it all for her because "we" means "me", basically. She may have to stay here with us for awhile because I think MIL has had enough. I don't think the other 2 siblings are willing to take her in at this point but I could be wrong. We will have to wait and see. Meanwhile, my sister is stressing because mom is getting more demanding and I am trying to figure out how to help her more. It will all work out it is just that right now I am in the "figuring out" stage. I feel that my first priority is to my parents, and Bruce agrees, thankfully. Unfortunately, Bruce is starting a very important project at work and will be working longer hours and be home less, which puts more of the responsibility on me. You know how life is, though, challenges come and go.
Better finish the coffee and get ready for the drive to camp...gotta fill up the gas tank and all. A nice drive up the coast alone sounds really good right now!;-)

Gosh Boo, y'all have my prayers in dealing with your SIL. As you said, mental illness is a real challange to deal with, and good for you and Bruce willing to try and help her out like this. I pray she can find the meds she needs to help her and for your family to deal with the turmoil in the meantime.
Auh2o, where you be hiding buddy? I miss your insight. Get in here.
MDC, How warm is it down there in Arizona now. We are hitting the mid 90's today for the first time of the year. But it's a dry heat. Been a very cool spring. Pleasent for us humans, but my corn sure has been stunted. It's usually belly high by now but is just a foot or so tall this year. (and no N.N., my belly don't hang that low)
Guess I better get to work. Grateful to have a job in this day and age. Prayers for all those who do not have one.

Possum, you snuck in on me. And I know what you mean by tough love. There are some cases in which despite all your efforts, you can't help some folks. And you reach a point where it will begin to destroy your own life. Thats when you have to go into the "survival mode", cut your losses, and rely on a higher power to intervene. It's tough, but sometimes it's the only option.

Almost forgot...Ro, you will be happy to hear this. Guess what the neighbors behind us got yesterday?? A lovely mare and her little baby (what do you call a little baby boy horse? I forgot). You should see this gorgeous thing. I think she is half Draft horse because she is big and stocky and her hooves and legs are larger than normal. I swear she looks like something out of a movie. I can picture an Indian warrior perched atop her back. She is a paint, white and reddish-brown. Even her face has a distinctive shape to it. Her baby is reddish-brown and very handsome. What is really neat is that we share the same fence between us so the horse and baby stay close to the fence and they and Thelma Lou have already become friends. It's wonderful! Now we have the pleasure of having those beautiful creatures to look at, Thelma has some company, but it isn't costing us anything. :-)
Those crazy goats are getting to be so much fun. Yesterday Bruce and I were out there with them and Bruce was wearing his leather loafers from work (I know, HM, we have shoe issues) and the little goat had some sort of fascination with those shoes of his. She would paw at them and then put her head against Bruces leg and push, like she was trying to remove his leg from his foot so she could have the shoe. Too funny.
HM, it looks like Strawberry is slowing down some now on her girth. She got big all of a sudden but now is slowing up a bit. I did feel of her belly and felt something moving, so I guess everything is ok.
Better scoot...

Hey Possum and ASA! You are so right, Possum. Sometimes you have to give up if they won't accept treatment because they are very toxic people, and I mean that in the nicest way possible, but they will take you down with them if you let them. In the past I have seperated myself at times for that reason. This is the first time she has agreed to treatment in a long, long time so we will give it a shot. Thank you and ASA for those prayers!
Asa, I thought about you yesterday because I picked up some corn in the produce section of the grocery store and it was on sale...I thought i would take a chance on it. Well, it was the best sweet corn I had ever eaten! Wow, I need to go see if there is any left in the store. I put real butter on it and a little salt and it was so, so good. Wish I had a garden! BTW, very wise words up there concerning helping people.

June 24, 2010 - Msg 79668:
Wow, Boo, I'm so envious! I'd love to be able to look out my window and see a beautiful mare and her adorable baby standing there. To answer your question, a newborn horse of either gender is a foal, up to about one year of age. After that, a male is a colt, and a female is a filly. Those two terms persist until they're about four, then it just becomes mare or stallion - or gelding, in most cases. Very few people will keep a stallion intact, unless they have specific plans to breed. They can be extremely difficult to handle at any time, and if there is a mare in estrus anywhere nearby, forget it. When Eloise and I went to see the Lipizzaner stallions perform, the announcer informed us that all the horses were intact stallions - thus the regal bearing, the spirited performance, etc. - but there were NO mares in the group. None. Ever. As he put it, you just don't risk losing horses like this in a knock-down drag-out brawl over a pretty face! Point well taken.
Well, I'm tired, back muscles are really complaining, and I'm going to go lie down for a while. It wasn't a particularly difficult shift, but twelve hours is long in any case. Be blessed, friends. Prayers for all the difficult family situations. --Romeena
