Thankful for all of the Vets who give me the freedom to pursue my dreams.
Been a nice evening...pleasant weather, sitting on the porch watching the animals. The homemade ice cream was really good. The family and some close friends spent the evening with us and little Emily saw the goats for the first time. How cute she was with them! It is worth the trouble just to see the happiness they bring the little ones. They seem to be adjusting well to being in the back 3 acres...no trouble so far but Thelma stays pretty close to the fence watching us, poor thing. The porches sure are nice and clean, though, and everyone was able to sit outside and not be bothered.
I recently bought a couple seasons of Little House and Erin loves watching them with me...think I will curl up with her on the couch and watch some mean old Nellie Olson!

Good morning, porch! Beautiful here today, clear, breezy, a lovely day! I did get canceled last night, was able to spend the evening with myt friends (great time, lots of laughs) and now I'm rested and fresh today. Got a Dr. appointment to get the plan for this renal thing, then Joe will be here this afternoon to repair a broken sprinkler head. All in all, a peaceful day.
Yes, PH, it is strange how the Plum, and now Toye Starr, respond to that commercial. I thought they might be reacting to some subtle behavior of mine, but Starr can be in another room and if the first piano chords sound, she comes trotting in, emitting little growls and woofs. She will sit in front of the TV and literally watch the commercial, making unhappy little noises the whole time. It's spooky! there are times when I think they understand a whole lot more than we give them credit for. I'm thinking that the day could come when abusers will be confronted by their victims, in a very real sense. Imagine standing before the Lord, and a tiny kitten is brought in, who says "Do you remember when you did thus-and-so to me?" and knowing there is now no denial? Like any of us, confronted with our sins, it could be very uncomfortable, but somehow, abuse of the helpless, whether animal or human, seems especially shameful.
Well, gotta run. Don't want to be late for the Doctor. Please pray that all my numbers have returned to normal, and acute renal failure has resolved. Be blessed, friends. --Romeena June 01, 2010 - Msg 79310:

I'm back from the doctor, and the news, while not all that bad, isn't all that good either. According to my numbers, my kidneys are functioning at about half-power. Dr. W thinks it may be one of my blood pressure meds that's irritating them, because nothing else seems to add up. My blood pressure has never been high enough to do damage, and my blood sugar stays in good control. He stated flatly he did not believe my diabetes has anything to do with it. Also, he's doubtful that the Advil had anything to do with it either, because I hadn't taken that much of it. So we're stopping the med for a few days, will repeat some labs on Monday and see if things have improved any. If not, then we have a whole new ball game. I feel just fine, so my impression is that things will be okay.
Well, I'm off to do a bit of mousing around, maybe get with Eloise and go find some lunch. Be blessed, friends. --Romeena June 01, 2010 - Msg 79315:

Prayers that those kidneys will hold their own and even improve. MDC makes a point, right? All we really need is one kidney that works enough to get us by. I have a friend who is giving one of his kidneys to his diabetic brother at the end of the month.

MDC, do you ever eat or drink those nutrients you take, or do you just take them in pill form? ;)
Like, do you ever drink cranberry juice?(trying to throw my brother some business his way; he works at Ocean Spray).
Had awards night at Kai's school tonight. Kai received the award for spelling, which isn't a big surprise to me. She took to it pretty quick.
Just wanted to say something about those relatives staying over this Memorial Day weekend. In that it wasn't all bad. Remember when I told you that my niece(on wife's side) also stayed over and slept in Kai's room? Well, when I was up there, and Kai and I were saying our prayers, I glanced out of the corner of my eye at Kai's cousin(who is unchurched), and she had her hands folded just like we did. Then Kai decided to read to her from her devotional, which they did for a little bit. I had left to do something in my room, and when I walked by I noticed they were already done and in bed. So I went on with what I was doing, and as I walked by again, I saw them both sitting on Kai's bed. I asked them what they were doing, and Kai said that her cousin wanted her to read more to her from her devotional.
I remember when I first started telling Kai about God, and how thirsty she seemed for that knowledge, and how eager she was to learn about Him.
I was just wondering if it is that way for most kids. That once they hear about Jesus, they just want to know Him more.
Kai's cousin may forget what Kai was talking to her about, which probably wouldn't be hard to do since her family doesn't talk about God or go to church. Or maybe there is started a little spark inside of her that won't let her forget, and will start her searching for more.

Eeek! Eddie just came mowing into the back yard - I didn't even know he was here. He usually comes on Thursday. Now I've got to get dressed and go to the bank, because I don't have enough cash here to pay him. I could write him a check, but I don't think he uses a checking account, so it would cost him to cash it. I try to always pay him in cash. It's the least I can do, when he so cheerfully does so much for me.
I have to work tonight, then am off until Friday of next week. Was supposed to work Tuesday, but another nurse wanted to make a trade as she needed Friday off. I'm glad to do it, because I just love these long stretches off.
Gosh, the yard is looking so pretty already. It's amazing what mowing will do, and Eddie does such a nice job. I think I've got a little bag of cookies in the kitchen - will send them to his little girl. I buy things like that when I catch them on sale, and send them to the children of folks who work around here. Kids love to get little unexpected treats.
Sterling, I loved that about Kai & her cousin. thank you for sharing it with us.
Who had an office shakedown? Was that you, MDC? I told you about making those crank phone calls! Yes, all of our refrigerators are running- right, Porchsters? LOL
What's for lunch? Anybody want to go to Mt. Pilot for Chinese?
Hope Romeena is having an easy night at work, bless her.
Fairly busy day today but not terrible. We are expecting some really bad weather here tonight. The good part is that we very seldom ever get tornadoes here on the coast and its a good thing, too because none of us has basements. If you did down 4 feet here you hit wet sand.
Bruce had his nuclear stress test today but didn't get any results. He has been feeling pretty good, though. The kids and I have been feeling a little under the weather from a virus being passed around in the family. I am much better, just more tired than usual.
Looks like they might actually get that oil leak capped this week. That would be a blessing. We are fortunate way down here to have not been effected by it so far.
Well, guess I will get to bed here soon...I tried to sleep in this morning but Hank started barking at about 6:30 and that was it for me.
See you all in the morning. God bless and keep each one of you and your families. :-)

Then you giggle like an idiot, and hang up really quick, thinking you're just the funniest, most clever thing that ever hit town. Gosh, that's three celebrities this week that have passed. Sad.
Glad you had a good night, Ro. While I have done my share of "Prince Albert in a Can" calling, I never heard of the zoo one...
Boy did we have one hellacious storm last night!! Tornado warnings, high winds, rain...we lost power for three hours from about 11:30pm to 2:30am. I thought about SPOT and wondered what he would be doing in this situation. Karen's little girl Alison was spending the night and all three kids were scared to death when the power went off. They were following me around and hanging onto the back of my clothes while I found matches and lit candles. Bruce was already asleep but soon woke up because his breathing machine wasn't working. I couldn't get the kids unglued from me and finally put them all to bed in the same room and stayed with them until they fell asleep. By then the winds has died down. There was alot of damage done in town, lots of trees falling on houses, etc. but we just had a few little limbs in our yard down and the little blue pool I put out for the dogs dissappeared...never found it. I was worried about the animals but they were all fine. I went to try to get the dogs into the garage or the laundry room and couldn't find them anywhere when that wind and rain hit. As soon as things quieted down, there they were playing on the back porch. All critters weathered the storm very well. I was going to ask SPOT a question. This house we are in has so many windows and the front door has a big glass pane so it is easy to see outside and we were watching quite an electrical storm out there. Well, there is a telephone pole across the street and it has light on it and a couple of those white, round can-looking things that have something to do with the power (don't know the name, obviously) but all of a sudden that thing lit up a green-blue color and sparks started flying out of that thing. I didn't see lightening hit it or anything so I am wondering what happened. That was when our power went out. So, what actually happens that makes the power go out during a storm?
Better git...I have a birthday party to attend. My friend Carrie (the one with 5 kids, the youngest a year old) turns 40!

possum again June 04, 2010 - Msg 79348: BOO- This is just a layman's take, but my bro is a lineman. (or should i say he plays one on TV? ha) Anyways, in normal operation, the transformer "transforms" the high voltage in the main wires to the 110 volts used in the house. Something may have been struck "down the line" and so to prevent a huge power surge into your home, the transformer absorbed it, but it gives up the ghost when it does so, and goes "bluey." But possum's right, we should wait for the official verification from SPOT once he gets the work order from the county. ha
Glad every one was safe, and that no babies were born during the storm! (:

I inherited a bunch of limestone slabs from my brother who now lives in the home that I grew up in - so in a way it's a little bit of old home in the new home. So - we are putting in a sand base to put the rock on top of. Eventually the deck that we will put around the house will have steps going down to the patio. Hey HM, that patio sounds neat. I really like the idea of you having a part of the old house at the new house. Hope you enjoy it a bunch. You know the birthday party I mentioned yesterday? Well, it was an outdoor BBQ at this house on a little lake and the owner had been there working on the place for 37 years and it was absolutely beautiful. On one side of the house he had built a flagstone patio with an fireplace in it. Wow!! It was something to see and he said he got all the stone for 2,000 from a guy who was going out of business. If you have enough stone, might think about putting in an outside fireplace. One of these days I want to put a stone firepit in the back somewhere...it is not at the top of the list of to-do's, though. I did finally buy four white rockers for the front porch and poor Bruce has to put them together for me. I got those generic white rocker you can get at Lowe's..only 88 dollars but you have to put them together yourself. We also got some shutter for the front windows (hunter green). We will see how long it takes to get those put up!
The porches sure are staying cleaner now that the donkey and goats are put up. I told you all about how people are talking about the donkey on our front porch? Well, i was at Walmart yesterday and the checker and I got into a conversation and I mentioned that house..I said it's the white one with the...(and she finished my sentence for me): "..donkey on the front porch?". I couldn't believe it! haha...she said she and her grandson were driving by and saw the donkey on the porch and he couldn't wait to get home to tell his grandpa. We are certainly getting a reputation in this town. :-)

Good evening, porch. Just got home from bunco - what a hoot! Twelve old gals rolling dice and whoopin' and hollerin' like any of it really mattered! We do have fun. We put up $6 to play, and then it's divided up at the end, according to various criteria in scoring. There are several different ways to win, so about eight people end up dividing the money. Nobody wins much more than they put up, and most of us just toss it back in the kitty anyway. The kitty is used to send flowers to a member if there's an illness or a death, or we vote to use part of it to pay a scholarship to send a needy kid to church camp, or sometimes we send a little bit to the Mongolia mission. If somebody chooses to keep what they won, usually nobody notices, and if they do, they just figure maybe that person needed it this time. It's all in fun, anyway.
One of our members was robbed last week. She was up at the church doing something, her husband left the house at 3 p.m. to pick her up, they got home at 3:25 and found the house ransacked. In that short time, the robbers had found an unlocked window, entered the house, took a flat-screen TV, a computer monitor (left the computer), took about $600 in cash, opened and dumped every drawer in the bedroom and turned on the water faucets. They didn't plug the sinks, thank heaven, so there was no water damage. They also found her jewelry and a camera, stuffed it in a pillowcase and were taking it, but apparently dropped it as they were going over the back fence. The police said they left in a hurry, probably heard the garage door opening. Imagine all of that happening in just 25 minutes.
You know, it really scares me. Not that there's any "thing" in this house that it would be so terrible to lose, but there's Toye Starr. If someone came in, she would be barking at them, and they'd probably do something to her to shut her up. In that case, the law had better lock them away for a very long time, because it would not do for them to be where I could find them. Theft I could forgive. Harming her, no.
Well, speaking of her little self, she's in here asking for a cuddle, so guess I'd better go get in my chair and make a lap for her. She is the very definition of "lapdog". Rotten little kid.
Be blessed, friends. --Romeena June 05, 2010 - Msg 79357:
Sorry for your neighbor, Ro. I always make sure things are locked up here. Even though we don't get much burglary around here. Still....
I don't understand why someone would turn on the faucets. I mean, isn't robbing them bad enough, but they feel they have to try to damage the place too?
Stay safe... and armed.
Had a little "God" moment with Kai tonight. She was having a case of the hiccups, but holding her breath and drinking water wasn't working, but it was well past her bed-time, so we went up to bed so I could tuck her in(well, she is at the age where she doesn't want me to tuck her in anymore, but we do say our prayers together).
She started our prayers(hiccuping), praying for me, her mommy and herself, as well as our families, and then passed it over to me, where I added a prayer pertaining to health and hiccups, and for the next day and whatnot.
When we finished, I asked her if she noticed anything. She looked at me quizzically, so I asked her what we were praying for.
Her eyes widened and a smile graced her face as she realized that her hiccups had stopped while we were praying.
I suppose. Jesus performed miracles big AND small.

His is a peace that I know best
When I'm attuned to Him;
Or when my problems seem to mount,
Or when my hopes grow dim;
When I've strayed and come back home
To find my prospects slim;
Ionly have to speak His name-
And nearby I find Him.
This has been a 2 week period of whirlwind activity. the Graduates FINALLY are!!! The year is mowed, the porch swept and it's time to sit for minute and put my feet up. Think I'll head for the front porch, find my comfy rocker and read for a while.

Sterling, I'll bet those burglars were going to plug the sinks but ran out of time...they were probably trying to copy "The Wet Bandits" from "Home Alone"...remember that? :-) Very sweet about Kai and her hiccups.
Love the poem TOM...thanks.
Take a break NN..."What's yur hurry"? Wish I could take a break today but plenty to do. Have to go to the store today (groan), and lots of chores around here. I'll be back on a break...

Boo June 05, 2010 - Msg 79361:
Good morning, porch! Thanks for the poem, Tom, and it's good to hear from you. We've been missing you.
About my friend's burglary - the police said it was probably kids, or at least amateurs. They had removed the dresser drawers and dumped them. That takes more time and makes more noise. Professionals open the bottom drawers first, rifle through them, then open the next one up and keep going, leaving them all open. Scattering stuff around just makes it harder for them to move around in the room. Also, my friend's husband has a large collection of very old coins, worth thousands, that the thieves had apparently looked at, but left behind. The police said the coins were heavy, so they opted for the TV and monitor, the cash, and the jewelry instead on their first pass. They think they may have thought they'd have more time, but when they heard the car pull in, they grabbed the "fun" stuff and ran. Then the idiots dropped the jewelry and camera, which was a break for my friend. She said her jewelry wasn't worth a huge amount, but some of it was inherited and meant a lot to her. The police said an experienced thief would have taken the jewelry, the coin collection and the cash first, and come back for the TV and monitor if they had time. The coins were worth far, far more than the TV - it was a flat screen, but it was small one, a bedroom-size, and not worth more than a few hundred dollars. The dumb kids just saw a bunch of old coins - had no idea what they were worth. Incidentally, my friends did not have an alarm system, but they're having one put in this week! I do have one, it's very comprehensive, and I use it faithfully. Plus, I have the Judge, and I would use it, if I was home.
Well, enough of that. I need to go clean that miserable pond filter again. I think I'll change the filter medium this time, it has gotten flattened and compacted, so probably clogs faster. Luckily, I keep replacements on hand. I've been threatening to put Fatima up too, and haven't done it. Maybe today I will. It's a bit windy, and she doesn't do too well in a strong wind, but we'll see.
Blessings, everyone! --Romeena June 05, 2010 - Msg 79362:

Hey, Spot. Be careful working out there in all that heat. Drink lots of water! And while you're working, think about how pleasant it would be to be on the cruise ship in October, enjoying the company of Mayberry folks and seeing the sights. There's still time to sign up! --Romeena June 05, 2010 - Msg 79364:

Oh, Spot, I do hope you and Miss Sherry will join us. It's a lovely time, congenial folks, lots of Mayberry fun and plenty of free time as well. If you can see your way clear to go, you might want to get signed up pretty quick, because the Mayberry cruise coordinator, Sharon, will need time to fit you into table seating and such. Naturally, I would hope you and Miss Sherry would be at the same table with Eloise and me - that is, if you would want to be. We had a really fun table last year, and you would make it even more so. Blessings! --Romeena June 06, 2010 - Msg 79366: Hi all, hey to Tom and spot and all.

Slow day on the porch...mercy. I know I have been busy for a Sunday.
Romeena, I wanted to tell you that Bruce has a cousin in Irving who would be about the age of your youngest, I think. She mentioned something to me about buying insur@nce from someone with your youngest son's name. Could that be your boy? Just curious...
Well, I am beat. Had Bruce's sunday school class over this evening and there were about 24 of us. Had a really nice time. I had better hit the sheets before I fall face-first onto the keypad!
Boo June 07, 2010 - Msg 79375:
Good very late evening, friends. No, Boo, that isn't my son, but we were aware of the presence of someone with the same name. I've gotten a few phone calls over the years, looking for that person.
I don't know what I'm doing staying up so late, except for the fact that I took a long nap this afternoon and am not sleepy. I have to get up early, though, so really should go to bed. My friend LaRue is having a carotid endarterectomy in the morning, so I need to be up at the hospital with her before 10:00. She's very nervous about it - well, scared may be a better word. There will be several of us "widder ladies" with her though, so lots of prayers, and she'll be fine.
Well, guess I'll go read for a while and try to get sleepy. I'm reading "The Lucky One" by Nicholas Sparks. It's a good read! I enjoy his work.
Be blessed, friends. --Romeena June 07, 2010 - Msg 79376:
Well, where is everybody this morning? I'm up and at 'em, will meet my friend at the hospital around 11:00. Her surgery has been pushed back an hour.
It's gray and cloudy here today, looks chilly out there, but it's actually already 84 degrees. It will be one of those hot, humid, heavy days, I guess. Makes it hard to breathe, seems like.
Well, I finally found a phone directory program for the computer, one that I really like. I loved my old "Agendus" program, but it was lost in the crash in January. This new one is called "Home Suite" and is very user-friendly, arranged nicely, and I think I'm going to like it very much. It has several features, including a sort function that's very flexible. I've got it on a 15 day trial, and am almost certain I'll buy it. It's reasonable, at under $30. I guess good things come to those who wait.
Well, I'd better hit the shower and get ready to go be with my friend. She's the one whose husband passed three years ago, and she hasn't quite gotten used to facing things without him. How well I understand that! To make it worse, Henry was very much a "take-charge" person - not an unpleasant controller, I don't mean that, but he was just always in charge, and she accepted and even enjoyed that. Now everything is up to her, and she's still a bit tentative about things at times, and really misses being able to lean on him. She's a worrier by nature anyway, so she has really been tense about this surgery. I know she'll be fine, and there will be several of us up there with her, plus her daughters, so she won't be alone. If you can, around noon, please just pray for LaRue, that she'll have peace of mind, and the surgery will be successful. Thanks, my friends. What would I do without you? --Romeena June 07, 2010 - Msg 79377:
Poor LaRue. Prayers for her this morning.
Seems like things were really lonely here on the porch this weekend. Last week I was looking back at the archives from three years ago and there sure are alot of folks missing. Wish we could get them back somehow.
It is a HOT and humid day here today. I wanted to sit on the porch with my coffee but yuck, no way. Summer is not my favorite time of year, but you all know that.
I'm not gonna do alot of work today. I need to recover from yesterday!

Jennifer, my niece in law is having some bad reactions to her antibiotic (starts with a v - don't know the real name of it - wikipedia says it is used as a last resort) She is back at Vanderbilt. I kind of feel like Gayle Sayers asking for prayers for Brian Piccolo, the story will make you cry.

Are you a developer with a plan or is it just a concept right now? I think something along the line of Disney's main street would be neat, only Mayberrys main street, courthouse, barber shop, the Grand, the hotel etc. Cool.
Just dont mention my mother's clock. Ha
Hey to Spot. Did you see Boo's question 'bout 'lectricity?

We must have been posting at the same time, HM. Prayers for Jennifer and her family (including you). Life can sure hand out some hard pills to swallow.
Yep, a theme park like Mayberry..we could come up with alot of ideas, I think. There could be a ride called "The Barney Launcher" in which you sit on these giant feet that launch you into a net..how does that sound?? They could have "The Grand" picture show that showed old flicks of the era and had entertainers/impersonators on certain days. How about Myer's Lake?...bonfires nightly and fishing during the day. There could be an attraction called, "Ride Along With Cousin Ollie" and it would be a wild ride in a squad car and you could turn on the siren! I could think of all sorts of things...I just hope the Mayberry Band doesn't play there!
Boo June 08, 2010 - Msg 79390:
Oh, and there could be a bar on the outside of town that served non-alcoholic drinks, of course. It would be called, "The Loaded Goat". June 08, 2010 - Msg 79391:
