MDC, if you are talking about the same suckers we used to get that were cone-shaped and striped red, yellow and green, they were called Astro Pops and you could suck while rotating them in your mouth and you would get a very sharp point on the end...you could certainly put an eye out with one...nearly as dangerous as those glass balls on a string (K-knockers or Klick-Klacks, depending on what part of the country you were from). Remember those?

Did any of you that played with Slip-n-Slide ever have the misfortune of laying one over a rock that you didn't know was there? OUCH. Between that and the painful Water Wiggle, I think those WHAMO toys were out to kill us. ;-)

One shameless little hussy just flirted outrageously with a young male (trust me, it's not hard to tell them apart), just really leading him on. She would walk up to him, touch noses, tail swishing constantly, then would dash off a short distance and stop and look back over her shoulder at him. He, of course, was totally twitterpated, and would follow wherever she went. When he finally got up the nerve to make his approach, and sidled up to her, she turned and slapped him with her front paw, then scampered up a tree! I was about to fall off my chair, laughing at them. Oh, it's a constant show out there in that yard! Squirrel orgies, birds putting on elaborate displays, and a few minutes ago I noticed there's a lot of courting behavior among the goldfish in the pond! It's a wonder the cops don't raid the place!

Well, I've got to go grab a nap. I have to work tonight, slept very poorly last night for some reason, and it's going to be a long time until tomorrow morning, if I don't sleep this afternoon.

Today I was watching the "Aunt Bee The Warden" episode and saw a goof I never noticed before. When Andy brings home Otis Campbell and they are in the living room, Andy is wearing his badge over his left shirt pocket. After Otis goes upstairs, Andy and Aunt Bee go into the kitchen. While in the kitchen, the badge disappears. Then after the commercial when Andy and Aunt Bee are still in the kitchen, the badge returns.

I have a question about this episode. I noticed Andy wearing a cast on his right wrist while he was wearing a dirty and ripped up uniform. He told Aunt Bee that he had some trouble with some prisoners. Didn't I read somewhere that this was a real injury? If true, does anyone know how Andy injured his wrist?

April 25, 2010 - Msg 78800: Yes, PH, it was a real injury, and according to what I have read in the past, he received it in a little fit of anger and/or frustration during a filming session, when he punched a wall or some other solid structure. They just simply wrote in a couple of lines that explained the splint and bandage, and kept going. True or not - I can't guarantee. Anybody else have more information?

Woohooo! The hospital just called and offered me cancellation tonight, and I jumped on it like a duck on a junebug. My paycheck will be short, but I don't care. I'm more interested in keeping my swollen foot elevated and avoiding as much stress to my knee as I can. I'm scheduled tomorrow night as well, and will have to work that, but for tonight, I've got a reprieve. God is good!

April 25, 2010 - Msg 78801: Good evening, porch. I was just reading a couple of articles in this month's issue of "Guideposts", and would like to suggest that everyone might enjoy them. It's always a good magazine, but this month there are two articles that are especially interesting. One has to do with Truckstop Ministries, and I thought of you, REV. In your travels, I'll bet you've seen the trailer rigs that have been made into chapels, and offer services for truckers and other travelers. The ministry has grown from one man's dream to over 70 chapels across the nation. Wow!

The other article was written by one of the magazine's staff members, and has to do with the value of friends, to help us through our daily lives. Boy, can I ever relate to that! So -- if you aren't a subscriber, try to pick up a copy and read those articles - I think you'll be glad you did. Hmmm - I wonder if there's an online version?? I'll have to investigate that.

My daughter called earlier, and we had a good conversation. We talked about everything from the kids to the shade-garden area she and her husband are clearing and establishing on the side of their house. It will be a place where one can go and sit and read, and enjoy the birdcalls and the breezes. Scratch the breezes for July and August, but the rest of the time, it will be perfect. She lives in a rural area, a little enclave of charming little homes, and she's on the edge, facing outward, so that across the road from her house there's a several-hundred-acre pasture and a big stock tank, complete with ducks. Lots of wildlife, and spectacular sunsets, too.

Well, guess I'll go hunt up something to eat. Maybe I'll make that gazpacho - I've got all the stuff, and it stirs up pretty quickly. Be blessed, all. --Romeena

I'm thinking I might have read that he punched his fist thru a wall at his house, but I can't really remember now. I think it might be on one of the Frequently Asked Questions over at Miss Crumps, but I'm not sure...(I know I read it somewhere)

Yes, MDC, Astro Pops were worse than lawn darts because we carried them around on a stick, pointing towards our faces and ran with them! haha Those were the days. No carseats, seatbelts, bike helmets or toy recalls. Heck, most of our toys were made of metal and had sharp corners...we really lived on the edge. ;-)

Thought about you yesterday, Ro. I was sitting on the back porch with Bruce's mom yesterday afternoon and her came Thelma Lou, sneaking quietly up behind her and began trying to eat her blouse. Boy, was it funny to see MIL's reaction. That old donkey is good medicine for the soul...she has already given us so many good laughs. Bruce is working hard on the fence because we need to have her put up so we can grow some grass around the house...he is about to buy some palettes to lay down out there but can't until Thelma Lou is put up....so I have been on the quest for a couple of goat friends for her and they aren't so easy to find around here. You would think so being so close to Mexico but people want more than I want to spend for them. I'll keep looking, though.

Did any of you watch the TVLand awards last night? Sean and I watched it and it was a bit boring at times but fun seeing some of the old-timers I hadn't seen in a long time.

April 26, 2010 - Msg 78808: Good morning, porch! I slept well last night, and at 8 a.m. I was up and ready to meet my friend Romaldo, who is cleaning out my cottonwood trees. He arrived on time, has a crew of eight with him, and they're all over my trees like monkeys! When they finish, there will be no more cottonwood beads on the trees, and therefore no cotton flying everywhere and making things ugly. That stuff builds up in drifts, clogs a/c units, all the little seeds soon sprout and have to be pulled - it's just a terrible mess. So, every year Romaldo comes and his climbers go up and strip all the little green beads out of the trees, and that solves the problem. He's also doing some trimming and pruning on the two male trees out front, cutting out limbs that were threatening the house.

Romaldo is a very nice young man. He came here from El Salvador with his parents when he was thirteen, speaking not a word of English. He's thirty-eight now, fluent in English, and one smart businessman. When I first met him, he had an old crew-cab truck that he hauled his climbers and their equipment around in. That was six years ago. He now has two new pickup trucks, a huge chipper truck with a diesel to pull it, and an open box-bed truck to haul stuff away in. He has a stump auger, and all the saws and safety equipment they need. In other words, this is an immigrant who has "pursued happiness" in America and made it work. He told me when his parents brought him here, they were "dirt poor and hungry", and America has given him a good life. He said "This is my country now, I love it, and would do anything to protect it." These are the immigrants we need, and I welcome them.

Well, I'm going back out to watch the guys. It's fascinating to watch them climb. They use ropes and belts and some sort of ratchet thing that lets them hitch themselves up without dropping back down. They get to their destination, then tie the rope off and just dangle there. I'd be terrified!

April 26, 2010 - Msg 78810: Well, the guys are finished and gone. The only damage I've seen was one little 4" plastic pot of basil that was waiting to be planted - somebody stepped on it. The pot is broken, but the plant is unhurt. It's amazing to me that they could do all they did out there and that's the only thing that got broken. Romaldo showed it to me and apologized, offered to pay for it! My response of course, was "Oh, puh-leeze!"

He was admiring the roses, and commented that his wife loves roses. I handed him some clippers and told him to cut her a bouquet. I keep inexpensive vases on hand, so I got him one. He cut a beautiful bouquet, and I can't even tell where he took them from. The bushes are still loaded. He said he'll cut a few inches off the bottom of each rose he cut and plant that part, and will get new bushes from the cuttings! Then he left to take them to his wife while they were still fresh. Evidently he lives nearby because he wasn't gone very long. I'll also share some iris rhizomes with him this fall. It's a pleasure doing business with someone as nice as he is. My trees look beautiful, and there is no cotton! Yay!!

April 26, 2010 - Msg 78812: I think I might be onto some goat companions for Thelma Lou...a family near hear is having to move due to a job transfer and they have a little farm with some goats, etc and are looking for good homes for some of their pet goats. The man said they have three young does that I think he said were bottle-fed, which usually makes them better pets. I am supposed to call him sometime this week to go out and take a look. He said they were spoiled and some of them are companions to a horse they have, so they would work out with Thelma Lou, I suppose. Any advice, Homemaker, about what to look for and what to avoid? I've never gone goat shopping but the family says I am becoming more like Ma Kettle everyday...not only mentally, but physically....everything is going south.

By the way, I got the results of the biopsy on the "hemmorhagic polyp" they removed from my stomach and it was benign. The doc who removed it seemed confindent that it would be...guess he's seen alot of them. I am wondering about if it could have been the cause of my anemia and forgot to ask. Do you know, Ro? He said I had two of them in my stomach but he only took out one. I am wondering if they bleed on occasion or something. I know my hemocult test was negative.

Well, off to the drug rehab for bible study...

April 26, 2010 - Msg 78815: Awww, Boo, I'm not so nice. There are a zillion roses out there, and giving out of abundance isn't a big deal, it's just being neighborly. If there had been only one perfect rose, and I cut it for his wife, that would have been nice. Probably wouldn't have happened, though!

I hope it works out for you to get the little goat friends for Thelma Lou. Poor baby, she sounds like such a sweetheart, I hate to think about her being all by herself. You've been so kind to let her "join the family" so to speak, but I realize that can only go so far.

I find myself looking forward to the time when we will all be able to communicate, animals and humans alike. I do believe that the main thing that hampers that now is their physical inability to speak. In some cases, that has been bypassed. Koko, the gorilla who uses sign language, has done some amazing things. Her keepers once gave her a ring to wear, and asked her if she knew what it was. She made the sign for "finger", then "bracelet." It was a finger-bracelet. Since she didn't know "ring", she just named it herself. Spooky, huh?

There are several chimps who sign, and I love the story about one of them - can't remember her name. Anyway, the chimp was pregnant, and her favorite keeper was also. The chimp noticed and questioned the keeper. When told that a baby was coming, the chimp smiled and performed a "happy" display. Later, the keeper delivered a stillborn infant and was off for a few weeks. When she returned, the chimp had delivered, and showed her baby to the keeper. Then she asked the keeper where her baby was. The keeper signed "dead." The chimp made the signs for "sad", for "sorry", and for "cry." Dumb animals? Mute, yes, but much more intelligent than we know.

Boo, about the hemorrhagic polyp, I would guess that to be the reason for your anemia, especially if everything else has been ruled out. I have a little issue with the hemoccult tests, because they really are not conclusive. With them, timing is everything. Just because it's negative right now doesn't mean the polyp has never bled. A single hemoccult doesn't mean much, just like a single blood pressure reading. You need sequential tests to make a reliable conclusion. A single negative can mean it's just not bleeding now. A single positive can mean you had a tiny, maybe even unnoticed nosebleed, or even that you had a rare steak for dinner last night. The presence of a known hemorrhagic polyp isn't conclusive either, but it's pretty darned likely that it has bled. They don't get called "hemorrhagic" for nothing. Have you noticed any indications of blood in the, er, final stages of digestion?

Well, the hospital called and offered me cancellation again, and I took it. That pretty well bombs out my paycheck for this two weeks, but none of the other nurses wanted it - all young moms with families to support - so I took it. My foot is still swollen, my knee still hurts, and it's only money after all.

I agree with you about the polyp...and the hemoccult and no, I have not seen any evidence of blood in the "er, final stages of digestion"..ha. However, a few months back when I was having the stomach pain after taking Advil for several days, I think I did. I say "I think" because some of the stomach medicine I was taking, like Mylanta can cause the same sort of discoloration that blood can cause. I did see some of that but not since then. Let me apologize now to those of you who are reading this conversation between nurses...didn't mean to cause any stomach upset...(hope Me-They isn't reading this). ;-) I don't know if I am still anemic, but I am feeling better. Seems like my heart rate is a bit fast, so not sure but will get it rechecked soon.

So funny how we have these conversations about our health as we age. I was talking to my friend Keith today when we met to go to the rehab and it was so funny because practically the first things out of our mouths were about my recent tests, and his allergies and headaches! It reminded me of cartoons I have seen about old folks discussing their ailments. Guess that's just the way it is.

Yes, I'm going to make certain that Thelma Lou has some companions. I like her too much to make her suffer alone. Bruce said he is going to make the dogs stay back there with her until we get some goats. He really likes her, too.

I was over at my niece and nephew's today (Emily's parents) because they now own my lab, Leah. They fell in love with her and wanted to keep her and they bought a companion for her, a great male lab. Anyway, Leah is getting these things called "hot spots" which the doc says are caused by allergies, usually to fleas. They have been giving her the Comfortis pill that keeps most of the fleas off but she gets an occasional bite, which she starts biting at, and then starts pulling out her own hair and the spot gets bloody and infected. It is a real mess. They recently had to have her treated for one that got as big around as a softball. Now she has several more spots, smaller ones but poor Amy is very upset. She is giving her Benadryl and she wanted me to come help her clean and treat the spots, which I did but I am concerned that she will keep getting them and they are painful for the dog. Have any of you dealt with this problem with any of your dogs? I am trying to look for ways to prevent it. She is going to keep giving her Bendadryl but I'm not sure if that will work. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Ro, that story of the chimp just gave me chills and makes me want to cry when i think of the way animals are mistreated, especially primates. I have been thinking more and more about the minds of animals since we got the pups and the donkey. This donkey really amazes me sometimes. Animals, who were made by the Creator, have emotions and intelligence and why should that surprise us, knowing who created them? I keep thinking about the verse you shared out of Isaiah, Ro...things will be much different in the new world when Jesus is in charge.

April 27, 2010 - Msg 78819: Hey, Boo! I'm sorry Leah is having problems with those hot spots. I had a spaniel that used to get them, and our vet said the same thing - usually an allergy to flea bites. Since my dog lived indoors, fleas were almost unknown, but as he said, all it takes is one bite. She did go outside to potty, so she would pick up the occasional flea. That's one more reason why I had the Plum, and now Toye Starr, using piddle pads in the house. I get a four-month supply of pads for about $25. and it ends up being cheaper than vet bills to treat the problems that going outdoors can cause. Not to be a buttinsky, but has Leah's vet approved the Benadryl? I don't know about it, one way or the other, for animals, but I do know that a lot of "people meds" are not approved for them. Ibuprofen is one - it's toxic to dogs and can be fatal. As for the hot spots, there are shampoos that help to calm the itching and do help some. Some topical ointments may help too, I wouldn't use anything that's not vet-approved though, because the dog is likely to lick it off.

I would love to meet little Thelma Lou one of these days. The little donkeys have always held a fascination for me, perhaps because they're given so much mention in the Bible, with one even being given the power of speech for a short time! When you look into their eyes, you can see so much wisdom there, it seems, a bit like the eyes of an old dog. Toye Starr's eyes, on the other hand, remind me of an impish five-year-old kid, but they're gentle and sweet.

Welcome home, REV. I figured you had encountered the Truckstop Ministries in your travels. The article in "Guideposts" about it was very interesting.

She is about 80lbs and he ordered 3 benadryl tablets twice a day, which is larger than the adult dose for humans. It really seems to help, though. When I was over there yesterday, she was calm and wasn't itching. She was even still while I cleaned the spots, which is unheard of. I did a search last night and read some interesting things on the web, but some of it I wouldn't try...someone even swore by WD40 but I don't think that sounds wise because the dog would lick it off.

Ro, you need to plan a trip soon to come and meet Thelma Lou...you could visit your granddaughter and us, too.

Snowing in April...that's hard to imagine, Auh2o. It has been close to 90 here the last couple of days but is beautiful and in the 60's this morning. Should be a great day.

With all this nurse talk here, it reminded me of something unusual with my most recent doctor visit; they measured my waist size. I asked about this. They informed me that it is a new federal health requirement to measure the waist of every patient once a year. Interesting, huh?

Got another TAGS question for you. We all know that on the show, Mayberry was a town or city. But when I was watching a recent episode, I could have sworn that the mayor referred to Mayberry as either a township or a county. Can anyone clarify this? I wish I could remember the episode. But it was on just a few days ago on TVLand.

Well, guess what I found today??...can you guess?...I found a goat companion for Thelma Lou. A sweet family near here is having to sell their little farm and move north due to a change in husband's job and they are looking for good homes for their pets. I met with the man (Mark) today to look over his little herd of goats and they are some pampered pets..very well cared for. They love them but can't take them with them when they move. I decided on a doe named "Strawberry" who is a Boer goat, about 4 yrs old and is a good mother. She is in heat so the owner is going to breed her with one of his males and should have some kids sometime in September, hopefully. I had him pick out the nanny who has had no trouble having kids or taking care of them in the past. I may also take a little, white one year old doe...trying to make up my mind. You should have seen the two billy goats this guy had. They were huge things; white with black heads and extremely playful and affectionate. He tried to get me to take one of them that he called his "baby" but, no way...you could have smelled that thing for miles. Ew! I watched that enormous goat walk up to a boat that was parked nearby and but it with his head and there is no way. So, I guess we will be adding a Strawberry to the family and when she has kids, we will call them something like "Raspberry" or "Snozberry" (From Willy Wonka...anyone remember that scene with Veruca?).

Better go get some chores done...

April 28, 2010 - Msg 78847: Hi ya'll. . .sorry I have been absent without leave here. . .been a little busy with Casey. We found out that he is even more special - seems like when his brother ran over his foot last week with the back tire of the small riding lawn mower (no blade on!) it hurt his foot. A trip to the doctor and then the orthopedic doctor revealed that some of the bones in his foot were not formed correctly. So he is in a walking cast and crutches. Since he is my right hand man when it comes to chores, I have been having to double up on things. Leaves me very little time for the computer or anything else. More doctor appointments are in our future as we are seeking a second opinion for treatment of this - he has a malformed navicular bone.

Boo - so excited you are entering my world more and more. You should have plenty of land for your goats. You do need to buy two does - they are herding animals and they need companionship. The cheapest place to register them is the association that I deal with. I can fill you in on that later. Do not buy a buck until you decide you really want to get into boer goats (like us). Bottle raised bucks can be very dangerous. Bottle raised does are friendly and almost can be pests (like Thelma Lou). I can tell that I really need to teach you goat talk too - LOL!! Good luck and keep me posted. . .Seriously!!

We are busy with shows right now - going to a show in Illinois (Casey will have some normalcy with this foot) and then I judge one next week.

Hey REV, I will certainly do as you advised. Tonight Sean and I were having a talk about my dad (who is 84) and how technology has boomed in his lifetime. I was telling him that i think it is about time for the Lord to come back and take things over, which makes me want to take every opportunity and live each day like it might be my last. Thanks for the encouragment...how does that verse go...something about provoking one another on to good works?

April 29, 2010 - Msg 78851: Here I am, Boo. Been busy today - saw the doctor about my knee. He doesn't think the hematoma originated in my knee, but doesn't really know where it came from. He thinks it was probably just a small spontaneous bleed from an over-stressed muscle, or a small injury that I might not even have noticed. Anyway, an x-ray of the knee shows nothing amiss. It's a little loose, grinds a little with movement, but that's not unusual at my age. So, he says give the hematoma more time and it should resolve, after which the swelling in my foot should disappear. It already looks better than it did last week, so I guess he's right. As my dad always said, I'm above ground and vertical, so I guess things are okay.

How exciting! Strawberry, huh? That's really cute, I like that. Now I don't know much about goats, but my thinking would be that a couple of little does would be enough. What's the point of a castrated buck? Seems to me he would just be a source of aggravation. Intact or not, he's going to be a troublemaker, most likely. Homemaker, do you agree? Like I said, I know very little about goats.

Well, Eloise and I are going on the Mystery Lunch thing with our church group tomorrow, then I work tomorrow night, so I'm off to bed. Be blessed, everyone! --Romeena

April 29, 2010 - Msg 78853: A castrated goat is called a "wether" - and they are less aggressive than intact bucks. They usually become a nuisance and really are of no use except as meat. Sorry, but they really need to do what God intended them to do and that was feed people. A couple of does is plenty for you Boo - they can become addictive - see what happened to me.
I also have family names - we have the Chocolate family (Chocolate, Fudge, Caramel, Peanut cluster, Fantasy Fudge, Chocolate Truffle, etc) - it's a good way to remember who begat who!

Ro - we will put you and Casey together with the feet thing. Maybe between the two of you - you can walk a straight line!

Ro, the only way I would end up with a castrated male would be if Strawberry gave birth to one (or two...who knows?). If she did, and we didn't want him, we would have to sell him and I am quite sure the children would stage a mutiny. I could be wrong, but I think if you castrate them early, the boys are fine. Any input, Homemaker? What is the right technical word for "castrate" when talking about goats anyway...I do need that lesson in "goat talk".

I don't imagine it makes much difference to the goat "wether" you use the correct term or not, but it does make for better porch conversation. Actually, I had heard the term, but didn't know to what it referred. As for the dogs on that ranch - well.... I'm fairly certain that Toye Starr would just turn up her little nose, look at me with an "eewww" expression her face, and walk away. She's much too refined to eat such as that.

Well, gotta get busy. I have to pick Eloise up in an hour. The bus leaves the church at 10:30, but believe me, some of those old gals and guys are probably already there, staking a claim on their seat, and it's only 8:30. The bus doesn't arrive until 9:30, but they'll be waiting, and trust me, they know their arrival order very well. No claim jumping allowed! You'd think they were waiting to buy tickets to a Frank Sinatra concert or something! We'll get there before ten, and the bus will already be over half full. Too funny!

I went to investigate and saw Hank chewing on a dead bird while I was munching on my sandwich...eww!! I would have rather he being eating calf nuts, I'm tellin' ya. I don't think I will be able to eat tuna again for quite awhile. Dogs can be really gross.

And you should wait until 12 weeks of age - they need that much time to get their urinary tract working well. And yes, there are some who protest about wethers going away - luckily, it doesn't happen here. Especially since I have about 25 bucks right now!! (Some will become meat for my FREEZER!)
