Just got back from the grocery store, now the ugly part begins - hauling it all in the house and trying to find a place to put things. I don't mind shopping, but I hate putting it all away.

Guess I'll bake cookies tonight. I had wanted to go to dinner at a restaurant that Eloise and I found, but can't find anyone to go. Eloise's sister is in town, another friend has gone to Houston. All my other running buddies are in the church choir, and they are rehearsing tonight for the Christmas program. I used to be in the choir, but dropped out after Dale passed, and just have no call to rejoin. Nothing negative, it's just not there anymore.

Well, got to run to the bank. The realtor finally showed up with my rent checks and I need to get them deposited. I'll take Starr with me. The poor little thing was devastated when I left for the grocery store, trembling and swallowing hard, so I'll take her this time. They always send her a treat from the drive-thru window, and call her by name, so she gets all excited. My favorite teller actually choked up and cried a little when I had to tell her that I had lost Sugarplum. She had known her for years.

December 12, 2009 - Msg 76604: Ahhh, Christmas carols. How does one choose a favorite? "Silent Night", of course, is probably everyone's favorite, or at least in the top three or so. I also love "O Come all ye Faithful", because it has an interesting alto part, and because I know it in Latin as well as English. We sang it in Latin once in one of our choir's pageants, and of course, no music was permitted, so we had to commit it to memory. I loved it! It just seems so, well, Christmassy in Latin,

My dear DIL sent me a copy of Andrea Bocelli's 2009 Christmas DVD, and it's absolutely thrilling. What a voice that man has, what a gift! Just when you think he's giving it his all, he climbs another octave and holds it for about another minute. What control he has! God may have allowed him to lose his sight, but He certainly made up for it with his music. Maybe if he hadn't been blind, he would have been distracted and wouldn't have developed his musical talent to that extent, who knows?

Since no one seems inclined to guess at the quote I mentioned, it was Ensign Pulver in "Mr. Roberts", when he blew up the laundry room with the fulminate of mercury. You see nothing but a wall of suds, then Jack Lemmon comes staggering out of it, covered with suds, and yelling "Geez, that stuff's terrific!" Speaking of terrific, Jack Lemmon was - terrific, I mean. One of the best.

Yep, Boo, my bed is calling me, too. I never climb into that bed without thanking God for it - it is so comfortable! I hope I never take it for granted.

Blue sky's and sun today! We ended up with about 3 feet of the fun stuff.

The thruway was closed for 13 hours yesterday with some people stuck there the whole time, from 7 am until 10pm, in a blizzard. And, guess what was waiting for them... yup, their toll. Don't ya just love the compassion and love that "The Village" has. It takes a Village... to pillage.

Boo & Asa- We were holed up as snug as a bug in a rug, decorating the tree, watching and we even made some homemade hot chocolate... yuck. Anyone have a good recipe for hot cocoa. So far, I still like the packets best.

The crazy thing is that they are white and the little round thing at the bottom is dark bronze. Well, everytime i see those things, I am thinking they look like boobies hanging from the ceiling! I've got my grandsons, my son and DIL are having their annual Christmas party for their neighborhood and church friends, so they're busy getting ready for that. I've got the boys now, but Eloise will pick them up after a while and they'll stay with her tonight. Good little fellows - they're just sitting at the kitchen table coloring and playing with Legos. Now and then a scuffle will break out, but a word from me will cool it off pretty quick.

I had one section of my icicle lights out, and wasn't able to fix them with my little gun. I mentioned it to my son though, and he knows about another function that gun possesses. He went out and turned the lights on, messed with them a minute, then shot the circuit with the tool and the lights came on. Amazing.

I got my scattermix made last night (known as nuts and bolts to some people, or "trash" to others) and it's good. I made about a tubful, so sent some home with my son for his party. Tonight I'm going to get cookies made, and then that takes care of that. Seems like things have gotten done in a much more timely manner this year, there are still 13 days until Christmas, and it all seems so much less hectic than usual. I don't know why, except maybe it's because David got the lights up a week earlier than usual, and I got the tree up and done early. Also, I bit the bullet and paid Jorge and Maria to clean the house really good before Thanksgiving, so I'm not fighting that right now, all worn out and crabby. Whatever the reason, I'm grateful, because I'm really enjoying this Christmas season. Got good music in the car, I've discovered channel 949 on Dish Network, so have carols playing softly in the bedroom all night (makes for good sleeping), and have a good mix on the CD player in the living room too. Also, for some reason, this year the grief and "blues" that I usually have to fight during the holidays didn't last long. I guess time truly does heal, eventually.

Remember that I worked as an OB nurse for 13 years and we used alot of KY, so it was a very common word for me over the years. Naturally the first time (and every time since) when I see KY Girl, I make that mental connection. Just wanted to explain so you all wouldn't think i was some kind of "pree-vert", as Archie Bunker would say.

We always called it "Trash" Ro. Love the stuff but haven't had it since mom had her stroke. It was one of the things we could always count on at Christmas..that and her fudge with pecans. Wow, talk about good!

I wanted to pass on a tip that I heard about on the local Christmas radio station. A woman was talking about an easy way to bake brownies. She said instead of baking them in a square pan, bake them in muffin tins. I tried this last night and it worked wonderfully. I made some for the annual ladie's Christmas party at church tomorrow. I also made some royal icing using meringue powder and it turned out great. I iced the round brownied with a liberal amount of white icing and then sprinkled them with sugar crystals...if you don't have some of those, get them. They are made by Wilton and look so pretty on holiday desserts! My brownies look like little snowballs. So cute. The meringue powder is expensive but it sure makes perfect icing that hardens so it doesn't get messed up after it dries.

I think I will go to Youtube to watch Dominic the Donkey. Thanks for the tip, TOM.

December 12, 2009 - Msg 76625: Oh hey, I wanted to share a really easy and very good fudge recipe i tried this evening. Here it is:

1/2 C of semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 C of milk chocolate chips
1 (14 oz) can of condensed milk
1/4 C of butter (half a stick)
1/2-1C of chopped pecans if desired

Put choc chips, condensed milk and butter in a large microwavable bowl and microwave on 50% power for about 4 minutes. Stir until chips are completely melted and all well combined. Stir in pecans and spread into a 8"x8" pan and refrigerate until firm. You can make it using all semi-sweet chocolate if you prefer or you can substitute peanut butter chips to make peanut butter fundge, or white chips with crushed peppermint or coconut...lots of versatility and takes about 5 minutes to make. Try it!

As for the grandsons, they're over at Eloise's now, so they're no problem. Hmmm - maybe I could just put Starr in my big old purse so she can't see what's going on.

That fudge sounds great, Boo. I've got a fudge recipe that's very good also, and very different. It involves Velveeta cheese, of all things. Anybody that wants it, let me know and I'll email it to you. It's too long to print it here.

Well, I got the fruit and nut cookies made - huge recipe, takes all evening just to get them baked. I still have the pretty little "sand tarts" to make - traditional with my family. It's a simple shortbread dough with very finely chopped pecans in it, and they're rolled and cut, and decorated with colored sugar. Wonderful! My mom always made them, I learned from her, and have made them almost every Christmas since I was married. The first three years or so after Dale passed, I didn't make them - just couldn't bring myself to try, but I'm past that now. Anyhow, I've got the butter sitting out to soften, so will make them tomorrow after church, I guess. Then I think that will be all the baking.

My mother used to make a white fruit cake that was absolutely over-the-top delicious. I know, fruit cakes are always a big joke, but truly, this thing was scrumptious. It was mostly fruit and nuts, and the little bit of cake that held it together was white. The fruit was mostly pineapple and cherries, none of the bitter dried fruit peels and such. The sad thing is, I don't have her recipe. She lost the written recipe many years ago, but still made it from memory. She just never wrote it down again, and never taught me. Too bad, because it really was delicious.

It suddenly occurred to me that all the searches for that white fruit cake recipe had taken place before Mr. Gore invented the internet, so I did a quick little Google of "white fruit cake." There were several very likely-looking results, and one is very promising. From the little I remember about my mom making that cake, this recipe looks very familiar. So, guess what. I think I'm going to make it and find out. If it's the right recipe, I'll be a heroine to some of my family, because everyone has mourned the loss of that recipe. I'll stop by the store on the way home tomorrow and get the stuff. It takes a pound each of candied pineapple and candied cherries. Everything else I've got. I really hope this is the right recipe. You are bringing back such memories, Ro...sand tarts...my mom made them every Christmas (but sprinkled them with powdered sugar) and again, haven't had them for over 10 years, since her stroke. My mom could cook up a storm before that and it was great coming to her house to a warm fire and some wonderful smells coming from the kitchen. I know she lives for those memories now and still grieves that she can no longer serve her family that way but has to BE served now. Her situation often makes me very thankful that I can still take care of my family. Ro, maybe you wouldn't mind passing that sand tart recipe my way..pretty please? I think I will surprise mom with some next week. :-) I found her some old-fashioned ribbon christmas candy this week and I know she will love that. She said they always had it when she was a kid at Christmas...that and oranges. For a miner's family in west virginia, that was a real treat. My mom's family had very little in the way of material blessings but she had a very happy childhood, growing up with her siblings and two good parents. Her mom was about the sweetest woman that ever drew breath and she took good care of her children.

You know, when i think of the stories i have heard about the hardships my grandparents endured and triumphed over, I wonder about this present generation and how they would fare. Recently my Dad was talking to me about the day his dad died when he was 14. I have talked about this before, but he told me something he hadn't before. He said he remembered that when his dad died from the heart attack, he was in the backyard and he remembers his mother running outside and passing out when she saw what had happend to his father. He said that the first words she said when she regained consiousness was "What will I do?". Being a widow in the 30's with four children was a terrible thing. No welfare, food stamps or government help. She managed to raise those boys well, even through the depression, owned her own little general store and even built a nice home for them in Bangs, TX. She had two sons serve in WW2 and both came back in one piece. What a life she must have had. I remember her a a woman of grace and strength. She died when i was very young, though, and I regret not getting to know her for longer.

Well, better get ready for preachin'...just an update: Michelle was supposed to be baptized this morning but has strep throat. She did real well last week, otherwise. She passed her drug test for job corps. has followed through on the recruiting process and found a shelter in her area that will take her in if she needs a place during the next few weeks while waiting to be taken to San Marcos. She also went to the courthouse to deal with some outstanding fines she had from when she was on the street. She was told that the judge had signed off on them in Dallas, meaning that there was no warrant involved but that she would have to be on some sort of payment plan to pay off her fines. Thankfully, they were not drug-related charges or I guess she would be in jail. I talked to her about how even though she is trying to live a different life now, the poor decisions of the past will follow her and there is nothing anyone can do about that. They just have to be dealt with if there is any hope of moving on and having a better life. Thank you all for the prayers on her behalf. She continues to have setbacks but her attitude is good right now and she is doing the right things. Please continue to pray that she gets accepted into job corps. without any problems.

December 13, 2009 - Msg 76633: Good afternoon, porch. I'm home from church, lunch with friends and chasing around to three stores before I finally found everything I needed for that fruit cake. I needed a new angelfood cake pan - mine died the last time I used it. So went to Target and got that. Then to Kroger for the cherries and pineapple. Got the cherries, they were out of pineapple. So on to Tom Thumb, where I found cherries, pineapple and a mix of the two, which would have worked well also. I just got the pineapple. Now I'm full, tired, sleepy and in no mood to make a cake. Maybe later, there's no rush.

Boo, I'll gladly email you that recipe for the sand tarts. I hope it's the same thing you remember. It probably is. The dough can be rolled and cut and dusted with powdered sugar, or sprinkled with colored sugar, as you choose. My mom used to roll it into little balls a bit bigger than marble and bake them, then while still hot, roll them in powdered sugar. Delicious little pop-in-your-mouth tidbits.

I think it's great that you want to make them for your mom. I dealt with a few years when my mom didn't really feel like doing our traditional things either, and she was thrilled when I took it over. I think it confirmed it for her, that the traditions were recognized and loved. She was pleased that I would want to continue it, and I'll just bet your mom will feel the same way.

December 13, 2009 - Msg 76647: Well. So much for fruitcake, today anyway. I sat down in my big old chair just to "rest" for a few minutes, at about 2:45. Next thing I knew, I woke up and looked at the clock and it was 6:19! The music program at church was at 7:00. So I threw some clothes on (thank goodness for Christmas sweatshirts, they'll go anywhere but a formal dinner party) and blew out of here by 6:30. The Christmas music was beautiful, and I really enjoyed it, but no cake was baked today!

It's now 9 pm, and I don't know whether I want to tackle it this late or not. Maybe I will - certainly I'm well-rested! I can't believe I did that - must have been really tired.

Well, a small furry person is tapping me on the ankle, begging for a cuddle. Guess it's first things first, huh? Who can resist such a sweet little request? REV, is Jake there with you now? If so, I'll bet I know where he is - square in the middle of your lap. Aren't they wonderful?

It's cool and foggy on the south texas end of the porch. Supposed to warm up today and hopefully dry out so they can lay the concrete for the sidewalks and carport...let's hope.

Maddie did very well with Santa but did leave a present for them at the register. I told Casey to take her out and he didn't get the hint, so she deposited in front of the register. Luckily, no one behind me and they had wipes to clean it up. No harm - no foul, and it was a Tractor Supply, animals are animals (even Maddie - but she doesn't know that!)

December 14, 2009 - Msg 76658: White Trash - pretzels (any small kind will do, twists,sticks, etc), M and M's (plain, peanut or a little of both - 1 full bag total), cheerios, and peanuts (1 small can). I don't measure anything - I have a fairly large crock that I put all of this in together. Then I take a bag of white chocolate morsels and a heaping tablespoon of Crisco and melt together in the microwave. I pour this over the stuff in the crock so that is coated pretty good. Then dump onto a cookie sheet lined with wax paper and wait for it to set up. It takes about 5 minutes to make. You can make it healthier (ha) by adding dried fruit (like banana chips, raisins, etc) but I usually just stick with the basics. It is delish! Try it - it is good for clogging arteries!

Got home to a message that my 6 yr old grandson has BOTH KINDS of the flu - very sick. If not better by tomorrow will probably go in the hospital, but his mom says he's better now than he was this morning, so we're hoping. Prayers for Hudson, please.

I'll get that address list out this evening, if I possibly can. I know, I said I'd do it over the weekend, but it just didn't happen. (I fell asleep, remember?) I'll have you know, that if this fruitcake turns out to be like the one my mother used to make, it is absolutely delicious and has made converts of many former fruitcake haters. So far, it looks pretty funny when I peek in the oven, but it has another hour and a half to go, so anything can happen. I know that sounds like a long baking time, but per instructions, it started out in a cold oven and is only baking at 250 degrees. Weird.

Anyway, if this one lives up to expectations, you won't be getting it to use as a boat anchor. Sorry. --Romeena
December 14, 2009 - Msg 76674: Hope you like the fudge, HM. I bought some white chips so I can make some peppermint fudge tomorrow....and some with coconut (I call it Snow Fudge). It is a pretty cheap way to make little gifts for the neighbors and friends. I bought some really cute little christmas tins at the dollar store to put it in and give as gifts. I made regular chocolate fudge and chocolate with pecans today. Artery-clogging White Trash...hmm...might try that.

Been a busy day. Had to put the Yukon in the shop to have the heater fixed...some little part that will probably cost me a fortune has to be replace. Guess it will be my Christmas present this year. I did get to spend some quality time with my parents today while I was at Susan's making fudge. Her house looks so festive and cozy. She has two trees in her living room/dining area and they have colored lights on them. She also has a really pretty green garland with red gingerbread men and bows on it on her mantle. She collects Santas and has santa figurines scattered about. It really does resemble Sant's house at the North Pole, I'm certain. ;-)

Well, they finally started putting down the wood floor in the house and have most of the living room and kitchen completed. I like it but i don't really love it. I guess I might as well, though, because it's what I'm getting. To me it is just a bit too rustic=looking and too much red in it. I will probably love it in time, though because it looks pretty durable because it has been made to look older so scratches and wear and tear won't be so noticable. I was over there for a little while tonight now that we have lights and I have to tell you that I felt a little creeped out. I will get used to it and when i have a couple of big dogs out there i will feel more comfortable. I will also have several motion sensor lights on the house and porch lights will help. I know I sound crazy, but when you are used to living in the middle of town with lots of neighbors, it just feels strange to be more isolated. I always try to think about what my dad used to say about cemetaries...he said its not the dead that should be feared, but the living and it's true. I should feel safer in a place where there are less people.
