Well, I'm lovin' this cold weather. We saw mostly sleet today but it was fun anyways. It is clear and cold as a...hmmm...something, not sure what. Had mom in law and sis in law over for supper. I had made chili in the crock pot (mistake...it is too watery that way) but it tasted good. I was passing by the tamale shop on main street...you know the one...right next to the tattoo shop and down the street from the biker bar.;-) Anyways, I thought I would stop in and get some tamales since I never eat them except on Christmas. I got some beef, regular..not real spicy and we had those tonight, too. Mmmm....good! Just eat with a little ketchup and a few crackers and what a meal. We also baked some cookies. Really nice evening until sis in law started crying about her ex that left her about 4 years ago. He left for another woman and she never got over it. Must be h#ll to be stuck in that emotional state. It seems like she just can't get beyond it because she keeps holding out the hope that someday he will be back, even though he has remarried and is very seriously ill from colon cancer. She is in such a state of denial. Her own children had to leave town and move north because she just seems to want to suck the life out of everyone who loves her. Very difficult situation and now she is living with my mom in law. Enough of that...it is very sad to see someone who is 50 but has the emotional maturity of a 10 year old, at best.
Well, I am about to gravitate to the bed and the heating pad. Sure will be nice to curl up under a warm blanket and maybe read a little before going to sleep. Hope I can rest well. Last night I had another one of those anxious episodes before finally falling asleep and I am beginning to wonder if it might be due to a med I have been taking. I skipped it today to see if I sleep more peacefully. See ya all tomorrow!

Ha! I never could figure that out either, De§. Properly pronounced in Spanish, it would be "Reh-FOO-he-o" with a slight throat-clearing sound on the "he" part, but that's not how folks say it. Another example is Mexia, a little town near Waco. In Spanish, it would be "Meh-HE-ah", but locals call it "Mah-HAY-er." If they want to sound a bit more cultured, they end it with "ah", not "er." Weird.
Well, the bunco party went well, tree and other decorations were finished and looked very nice. Would never have made it without Eloise. She came over around noon, we had a quick lunch, and then she helped me finish all the details. She basically set up the Nativity for me while I finished the under-the-tree area and decorated the mantle with "Snowman Row." Only a really good friend would do that, and all the while refrain from laughing at me without makeup and hair sticking up every which way, in grubby jeans and a ratty old shirt.
Now I'm going to take my rapidly-growing-sore and scratchy throat, and my tight-feeling chest and put the whole sorry, weary mess to bed, and hope to feel better in the morning. Be blessed, friends. --Romeena

Well, I am off to Corpus to pay a visit to Michelle. Poor thing is sick with a cold from walking the streets in the cold. She couldn't afford a bus pass to get anywhere and she doesn't even have a blanket to sleep with. I bought her one but it got left here when she went to Dallas. So, I am taking her the blanket and some cold medicine and soup. Poor kid has no mom or sister to take care of her when she's sick. She is supposed to go for that interview with job corp on Monday so I pray she is well by then.

Good morning, porch. It's absolutely beautiful here today. It was 33 degrees when I sat down here about half an hour ago, and now it's 39. The skies are perfectly clear, a beautiful bright blue, and the sun is just working overtime, so warming things up rapidly.
I feel awful. My throat feels like a pair of wildcats had a fight in it, my head hurts, muscles ache, and suppressing a painful cough will probably be my primary mission for the day. My doctor's office is closed today, naturally. However, I have a couple of physician friends (Mongolia trip partners) who are retired. I think I'll call one of them and see if I should take the Amoxicillin I keep on hand. My dentist orders it, and I take it before I go in for dental work. I don't want to take it if it's not going to help, but neither do I want to take any chances with an infection setting up camp in my pacemaker implant sites.
I'm doubly annoyed by the onset of this whatever-it-is. My son in Florida called, and he had a fun thing planned. He recently got his pilot's license back, after being so ill for so long (he's doing wonderfully well now) and he bought a 6-seat Beechcraft plane. He's been talking about that for years, and finally did it. He was planning to fly it to Dallas tomorrow, pick me up and then fly us both to Fredericksburg. It would have been a great trip, but no way was I going to get into that cabin and risk giving him whatever is living in my throat right now. So, I guess he'll skip coming here, and just go on to Fredbg. He has a rent house there, which is empty at the moment and he wants to get it rented. Shoot! That would have been such fun. Oh well, there will be other trips. He loves to fly, and says he'll probably be coming out about once a month now. The cost is about the same as commercial for one person, with fuel costs and landing fees, but when more than one person is involved, it gets cheaper real quick. Door-to-door, it's about a five hour trip. It takes that long to fly commercial, about 2 1/2 hours in the air and another 2 1/2 hours of driving time, airport stand-around time and such. His plane is hangared at a local strip about five minutes from his house, and he can choose from several airports around here, all of which are twenty minutes or less from me. Plus, he can bring his dog, Abbie, and I can carry Toye Starr without having to pay $80 each way!

It is now about seven hours since I started this entry. I left the computer to feed Starr this morning, ended up in my chair and have been there ever since. I slept there all day! Still feel rotten. I hope none of you gets this stuff - even my fingernails hurt. Oh well, this too shall pass.

SPOT, did Bama take Texas? I didn't hear anything about it yet but there were alot of Texans crammed around their TVs yesterday. I took the boys to their youth Christmas progressive dinner last night. It was nice and lots of Mexican food, which is always a good thing. Chili, tamales, gucamole, you name it. They each brought a new toy to donate for my sister's organization for needy children. I have the Yukon full of toys and Susan is out of town so I can't drop them off....I kinda feel like Santa.;-)
MDC, I am saving the TAGS Christmas Episode until I get into the house, i think. It will be the first one i watch there. Then, I think it will be A Wonderful Life. I wanna smile just thinking about it.:-)

It is finally beginning to warm up here. Will probably get back into the high 60's today. I think I will go out to the house today and put some garland and big red bows on the fence and gate like I did last year. Bruce told me something funny the other day about the house. First, I should say that this being a fairly small town, the population is probably around 20,000, maybe a little more, our house has been getting alot of attention. I think mostly because there have been quite a few homes going up in the area and they all seem to be a certain style that is popular right now, modern, brick...very nice but there are about 12 houses near us that look pretty much the same with different colors of brick. Ours being different and looking old-fashioned it stands out. Well, Bruce went to pay the electric bill on the apartment the other day and told the receptionist the date that he wanted the electric cut off here and transferred to the house. When he gave the new address, the receptionist looked up, pointed her finger at him and said, "You!..are you the owner of the big white house with the red barn? I love that house!". Turns out that our builder was in there the other day and the girls in the office were asking him questions about it and he told them to come out and look at it. A group from the office went out there last week and looked through all the windows and love it, she said. Funny. We get people stopping in and asking the builder to build them one and he is having to turn them away at this point. If you were to see the house, you would see that it is fairly simple, nothing real fancy but I think it strikes a chord with people that says "home". It certainly has a Mayberry quality about it, which is exactly what I was going for. :-)

I watched the neatest show this evening - "The Natives visit the USA" or something like that. It was on the Travel channel. It's about a group of five more or less aboriginal men from the Pacific island of Tanna, who are brought to the U.S. and move around the country, staying with various families for a week or so, and participating in their daily lives. One of them speaks English, and serves as the translator. Seeing our world, and our holiday customs and other activities through their eyes was really fascinating. Also, little glimpses into their world were offered, and their habits began to make more sense as well. They were unfailingly polite and kind, wonderful sense of humor, very playful, and so innocent but at the same time very wise. If you get a chance, watch it. I think you'll enjoy it.
Well, my lights out back just clicked off, it must be 12:30, so I guess I'll take weary me to bed. I got a nap this afternoon so not really sleepy, but my ribs are so sore from coughing that it hurts to breathe. No, I don't have pneumonia. I've already put my "ears" on and listened to my own breath sounds - they're intact in all lobes except the upper right, but that's normal for me, a leftover from radiation treatments in 1979. Now, where did I put that VICKS???

Hey Possum, I am getting concerned about ASA, too. Sure hope everything is ok. Seems like the last time he didn't show up for a long time is when he was out in California and fell by the pool and got a head injury. Sure hope he is ok now. The porch just isn't the same without him.
Your not dumb, Possum, just busy. I have been doing things like that lately, too, and I think it is just because I am so busy all the time and there is too much stress in my life. I also remember hearing that doctor on TV say that when your "ovaries shrink" during menopause, it causes a hormonal change that makes you forgetful and kind of ditzy...that explains alot about my mother, as I recall. I feel sorry for my kids.;-)
Better get Erin up and going. She got to bed at 10pm because we were having dinner and visiting with some out of town relatives so she will be hard to get up this morning. It was a nice evening, though and got to spend time with a very dear neice and nephew (and his fiance) that I don't get to see often. They are really sweet kids, well young adults really. I think I mentioned that my sis-in-law and mom-in-law are now living in the same little apartment? Well, we were over there and my sis-in-law (Vicki) looked like she was ready to have a nervous breakdown after living with mom for a week. I don't think she is going to make it for long, but at least she is not on the street. I witnessed how my mom-in-law treated her at times and I didn't like it. She really talks to her and scolds her like she is a two year old. I think I am going to have a nice little talk with her and see if it will help. Sometimes people don't realize how they come across but my poor mom in law is losing it. She is really not very nice anymore. Last night when we were at her apartment, Vicki was frying something on the stove and the smoke alarm went off. Erin rushed into the room to see what was happening and immediately mom=in-law jumped on her in front of everyone and started yelling at her saying, "you pulled the emergency cord, didn't you!", and when Erin shook her head, bewildered, she yelled, "I know you did!". Well, Bruce jumped up and finally got through to his mom that the smoke alarm when off because of smoke in the kitchen. I felt sorry for Erin because there was company and grandma got onto her in front of everyone. Of course Grandma applogized to Erin and everything went on as usual but Bruce wasn't happy and I think he will talk to his mom about it. It kind of sad because the kids want to spend time with her but it seems like things like this happen to them when they do and it makes them not want to be around her. I saw the same thing happen with Vicki's kids who are grown now. They put up with alot through the years and now they don't want to have much to do with her. I pray I don't end up driving away the people I love when I am older. Its really very sad.

Boo- My Grandmother is the same way. Her first 3 husbands died while married to her, but her 4th and legally 5th walked out on her 3 years ago and she hasn't been able to deal with it. I'm sorry to hear about your SIL. Bryson also had the same experience as Erin. When we were in OH for Thanksgiving, Nick pinched Bryson's nipples so hard he made them bleed. My MIL told Bry that's what he gets for being annoying and she accused him of opening a Pepsi and leaving it out while yelling at him and he was denying opening another Pepsi, my SIL came in and asked where her Pepsi was. My MIL never apologized or anything. Sad when there's favorites amongst grandparents.

We had snow on Saturday. It is cold today and supposed to have rain tomorrow.

So many eps had scenes on the front porch that Alan, our site moderator, just came up with that sentence as a "composite" of what might be said during a typical gathering on Andy's front porch. Our porch is expandable, isn't that cool? I have an appointment with my doctor at 4:15, primarily for a swab to make sure it's not swine flu, but I really think it's just a particularly nasty cold. Then I'll stop at the grocery store for a few needed items (I'm almost out of Starr's food) then back home. I got tonight off at work, they moved me to Wednesday night where there was a hole in the staffing, but right now, I don't know if I'll even make that. I feel awful! (Whiiiiiinnnnne!)

Ok,Boo,I'll just chalk it up to the old "shrinking ovaries" syndrome! I still think I was stupid,though- stood right there over the weekend,counted my pills out,and was sure I had enough until midweek.Then I remembered I take 2 a day and had counted wrong! Oh well.. got my refill & shopped for Laci's Christmas gifts.
Snow? Cold? Let me give y'all the latest on my Wyoming folks- it's been snowing there since Sunday with a wind chill of -15 degrees! I think the high tomorrow is 2 degrees! My sister is loving it though-we'll see how she feels about snow around April or May!

Hi, porch. I'm home from the doctor, and a side trip to the grocery store. Had to do that, Starr was almost out of Beneful, and we can't have that! Anyway, the doc said it was just "crud", not the flu, and put me on a Z-pack, so I should be fine. Will be back to work on Wednesday night.
We have had a light misty rain (cold!) and of course, my twinkles in the front yard are out and half the icicles are out as well - two GFCIs are tripped. I'm telling you, more than five drops of rain, and out it goes! However, everything is still working in the back yard. There was one connection that I had long suspected might be the culprit. I turned a bucket upside down over it, and so far, it's working. I wonder if that connection is thinking under there??
Well, gotta get into something soft and snuggly, feed little Starr, and settle down with some supper and a TAGS DVD. Maybe I'll watch the Christmas ep. Yep, that's the plan.... --Romeena

possum-I have to agree with your sister. We get between 200 to 300 inches of snow a winter here and dip down into the -20's a few times and I love it. I must admit I do love the Springtime too.

Tom, I am with you. I can do without the cold and snow this year. And we are supposed to get a whopper of a storm tomorrow afternoon, lasting until the Wednesday afternoon or evening.
I am glad I don't work tomorrow, because I would hate to drive the 45 minutes home in a blizzard. Though I may be driving it to work on Wednesday. Unless of course they close up shop.
Which will never happen, as I work at a casino, and neither snow nor rain nor gloom of night shall stop people from satisfying the sin of greed. Unfortunately.

Lucy, Nick pinched Bryson until he bled?! That makes me mad. You should have held Nick down and pinched him back. There is no excuse for that kind of thing. I really don't understand how your grandmother could respond that way. I know some folks get old and cranky but its not excuse to treat a child that way.
TOM, I loved that poem. I think I am going to copy it and frame it...maybe set it next to my bed. Sometimes I have trouble not getting afraid at night when I lie down and have time to think. My mind wanders to the problems and questions about the future.

Speaking of caring for the poor, MDC, it has been a stretch dealing with Michelle this week! I have to keep praying for a right attitude. She ended up in the ER yesterday feeling sick because she drank bleach water. While she was in Dallas and feeling low, she went out with an old friend and smoked. Now she is afraid she won't pass the drug test for job corps. It was 2 weeks ago but they say it can stay in your system for up to 60 days. Someone told her that if she drank bleach water it would take the marajuana out of her system! She is ok, but when I talked to her last night she was hungry and had no food. She has no money left and her rent is due again on the 9th. She doesn't actually go to San Marcos for job corps until the end of the month or early January. So, I am going to try to contact an organization today in San Marcos that might take her in until job corps can. I guess i will have to take her some groceries, too. She was doing ok until she made the mistake of going to Dalls because when she did that she lost her caseworker here, interrupted her job, which hired her back but has not called her out to any jobs yet. It is one of those situations where you get involved with someone and end up taking on a bigger committment than you thought. I am going to try to get her to San Marcos and then hopefully, she will be able to stand on her own and not get into trouble, but if she messes up and gets back involved with drinking or drugs, I can't help her because I will just be enabling her. We'll see what happens. Prayers appreciated.
Busy day today. Have to take mom to see the cardiologist that specializes in the electrical conduction of the heart. She hasn't been doing very well the last couple of weeks and is not wanting to get out of the house at all. Hope this doc can help her.

Good grief, Boo! Michelle drank bleach water?? Isn't that just amazing? A dumb kid won't listen when caring adults tell her that pot and other drugs are bad for her, she goes ahead and uses them anyway, because in her mind you don't know what you're talking about. Then when the consequences are coming at her, she listens to and believes some idiot who tells her to drink bleach!
OK, I'm going to do a little ranting here, and I realize I'm going to sound harsh and uncaring, but the fact is, you can't fix stupid. This girl is 18, going on six. Now before anyone tells me, I know she has had a terrible path in life, no advantages, lots of abuses, no example of good choices, etc. She has, however, had lots of examples of the consequences of bad choices, in the lives of those around her and in her own as well. A negative example can be as helpful as a positive one, sometimes more so. You learn more from touching a hot stove than you do from watching people avoid it. One would think that when someone like Boo comes along and throws her a lifeline, she would grab it and hang on, and solidly turn her back on the bad choices. But does she? Noooo - she goes out with friends, smokes pot and then drinks bleach in a stupid attempt to remove the evidence from her blood. Then she calls Boo to come clean up her mess, yet again. As I said, you can't fix stupid.
Boo, you're doomed to disappointment and heartache when you keep fooling with someone like her. I know, I sound like Scrooge. "Are there no workhouses? Are there no prisons?" I don't mean it that way. These days there are agencies and organizations that are genuinely dedicated to trying to help someone like Michelle. Some people build on the help they receive and go on to live a productive life. Some even manage to do it without any help. And some just keep taking, and taking, and taking. I know she's about to age out of the system, and that's going to make it tougher, but there are still women's shelters and places she can go. It's time she stood on her own two feet.

Boo--I know you are doing your best with Michelle, but there is also CHOICES involved on her part and, let's face it, she is making some really STUPID ones. There are the genuine poor and then there are others like her who could walk into any whataburger or McD's and quite certainly get a job.
I know i sound callous, but she needs to be told that. Tough love is very important in such a situation. In hindsight (which is always 20/20), perhaps you should have told her that going back to dope would mean a cut-off of your help, or something like that. With no guidelines, and her thinking that you will just "buy her groceries" etc, is not a good set up. My prayers continue, but there is a point where she has to take responsibility for her own actions and suffer the consequences of those actions. I realise that I am a third party removed, but those are just some thoughts.

I may have shared this story with y'all before, but here it is again. My pastor, when we lived in Springfield, was a feisty little guy who seemingly feared nothing. He preached the gospel, full and true, and he went out visiting two mornings a week, into some very inhospitable places sometimes. He always took one of the deacons with him, and my Dale was often chosen, probably because of his impressive size. In the course of those trips, Dale learned a lot about Bro. Tom's background. I may not have the details right, but as I recall he had an alcoholic, runaway father and a drug-addicted mother who died when he was small and left him in the care of grandparents who didn't want him, but had to take him, and basically used him for a farm hand. The grandmother was a frightened little woman, and the grandfather was abusive. So abusive that in one of Bro. Tom's many beatings, he received an injury to his back and hip that left him with a permanent limp (which he managed to modify into a sort of swagger) and he couldn't walk without a cane. Still, this youngster would slip away and attend services at a little nearby church. As soon as he could, he left his grandparents' home, got a menial job somewhere and became self-supporting. He put himself through seminary, and eventually built up a church that became a beacon of truth in Springfield, MO. So, it's not your circumstances that matters so much as how you meet them and deal with them.

Boo, Michelle will forever be standing with her hand out, waiting for you or someone like you to "help." If you drop her, she won't fall far. She'll find someone else to lean on. Or she may just melt down and deconstruct completely, and that will be sad, but it will not be your fault. It's a choice she will make, just as she has made others.
This is why Socialism doesn't work - there are too many like Michelle, who are willing to take, but not willing to do what is required in order to make themselves into one who can give back instead. It all sounds so noble - the wealthy sharing with the poor, but it never works, not when it's legislated. There are too many "poor" who are quick to receive, even demand, but offer them a chance to earn for themselves, and they vanish. Opie and his Merry Men learned that lesson, as I recall.
Voluntary sharing, not to be confused with the forced sharing of Socialism, does work. We all do our bit - I have a big box of groceries sitting in my kitchen right now, which I will take to our local food pantry. I'll take some canned goods to the drives at church and at work. I've been cleaning out closets and giving away clothes to some women I know who can use them. Today I'll buy a little warm jacket and give it to our local crossing-guard "coat drive". They hand them out to kids they see who have no coats. My church has a benevolence ministry. I've slipped a $20 bill into the purse of a SS class member when she wasn't looking, because I knew she needed it. I pay my taxes. I give to local charities. I carry bottled water and packages of cheese crackers in my car and hand them to the panhandlers on the corner. Mostly I get a snarl in return. You can't buy drugs with bottled water and cheese crackers.
I don't mean to be patting myself on the back - we all do those things. God has prospered me, and I can do no less. My point is that help is there for those who truly need and deserve it, but sooner or later, the best way to help someone is to make them do for themselves. "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to catch fish, and you feed him for a lifetime."
God bless you, Boo, for your loving and generous heart and for the things you do. However, please know that you can't save the world, and no one can help those who won't help themselves.

Good Tuesday Porch. Just checking in for a minute. Cool, rainy and supposed to be very windy this evening on my end of the porch. Work has kind of slowed down this week, folks must have better things to do. :)
MDC, I don't think there is a CD of the music from Smokey Mountain Christmas. Since it is a live show at Dollywood they may not have CD's available as it would discourage folks from paying the admission price to go. My friend and I have gone every Christmas for the past 8-10 years. it is pretty much the same shows but we enjoy the lights and music as well as our girls day out. CD's would be a good idea though.
Romeena, I totally agree with your post above. Hope you are feeling better today.
Since it looks like I missed breakfast and lunch, I will rustle up some supper: fried chicken with crunchy crust, mashed potatoes with gravy, peas, fried squash, SLAW, yeast rolls, carrot cake, tea, lemonade to drink.

BOO- I hope you don't think that we are "ganging up" on you. Just wanted to let you know that RO and I did our posts completely independent of each other's thoughts or postings. And, I guess I should add that I am speaking from EXPERIENCE also. I have been in similar circumstances as you are right now, with a good deed going a bit arwy. Also, besides Opie's hobo, there was also Mr Wheeler, the Elixer man, ROGER, etc from TAGS who took advantage of ones good intentions. Now, we could all say WWJD, and yes, he would have helped her, but people often forget the "rest of the story." For example, with the woman caught in adultry, he ended it with, "now go and dont commit this sin anymore!"
So, all I am trying to say is, yes, it was good of you to help her, but even as you said "if she messes up again with the drugs, I cant help her."
SHE should be calling San Marcos. Give her the phone number and if she wants the help, she'll make the call. OK, I'll slide my Hyde Park soapbox back under my rocker, and just set a spell. Love ya,
