Thanks Possum for your prayers. And it is funny you should say you are praying for me as well, because when I got the call this morning from the school secretary, she said to call if we or Kai need anything. All I was thinking was, I think their family needs it more than we would. But I thank you for your concern and consideration anyway. It was not something I thought about.

Also, just like you, I laughed at homemaker’s posting about “…good to see you PH. Have fun painting Boo…” in Msg 76069.

Wow New Neighbor, you were lucky not to have been injured in that explosion. I experienced something similar many years ago. I burn papers that I’m discarding that have personal information on them. I loaded up a 55 gallon metal drum in the alley with some crumpled papers, then poured in a little too much gasoline. I then placed chicken wire over the top opening of the drum and placed a cement block on top to keep the wire in place. When I dropped a lit match through the chicken wire, it sounded like a cannon exploding as the cement block and chicken wire flew into the air higher that the roof of my garage. For a few seconds, it was raining crumpled paper that landed up to two houses away. The sound brought out some of my neighbors. Luckily, I was not leaning over the drum opening as I dropped the match, so I received no injuries. Today when I do this, I don’t use gasoline as an accelerant.

Although I had volunteered for combat duty in Vietnam, the signing of the peace treaty prevented that and, I believe, saved my life. Many were not as lucky as I was. I salute all who served, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

As many of you know, I also have a home in Canada. Canadians seem more public with their displays to show support for their military. Many Canadians proudly wear the poppy flower during the week preceding Remembrance Day (Veterans Day in the USA). Even the talent broadcasting the news on Canadian television wears them on the air. And whenever a fallen soldier’s body is returned to Canada, on the journey along the 401 highway from the Canadian Forces air base to the coroner’s office in Toronto, many people stand on overpasses with flags and banners as a final gesture of respect.

November 13, 2009 - Msg 76105: PH, it really is good to have you "home" again - we've missed your insightful comments.

The description you give of the public displays of patriotism remind me of America before such things became "uncool", back when people stood when Old Glory was carried by, or the national anthem was sung. People knew the words back then, too, and Roseanne's tasteless and embarrassing performance would have been booed off the field. The VFW sold the little paper poppies for whatever donation a person chose to give, and on Veteran's Day everyone wore a poppy, even little children. The moment of silence was observed back then, too. You know, being as old as I am has its advantages, but it has drawbacks too. It's hard sometimes, seeing the disregard and downright disrespect for the flag, for veterans and the country's honor that is shown by so many today, when one can remember a day when such was not the case. The contrast is not a pretty sight. On 9/11, the giant stirred, blinked, sat up and waved a few flags for a while, then went back to sleep for the most part. Meanwhile the inmates are dismantling the asylum, brick by constitutional brick, and the rest of the world is laughing at our stupidity. God help us all.

On a positive note, in some of our small towns, great respect is shown during the return of a fallen soldier's remains to his home town. Recently in Fredericksburg, one of their own was brought home, and my daughters tell me the whole bloomin' town turned out, standing along the roadway with little flags, and everyone saluting as the cortege passed by. I'm glad that still exists - there are still pockets of patriotism here and there.

Well, I am so very tired, and I have a big day tomorrow. Jorge and Maria are coming to help me clean this house, and honestly, I needed to go through it with a front-end loader first, but haven't done it. I hate clutter, and there's a lot of it. Well, no matter. They're here to do the deep cleaning, moving furniture and vacuuming, dusting in high places, scrub the tile floors in the entry and the kitchen and sunroom. They can work around some of the clutter, and I'll get it put away later. Got to clean out some closets first, to make room! I may do a little of that while they're here tomorrow, because they could probably use some of what will be going away. Maria wears the size I used to wear, once upon a time.

Good evening porch, or 'mornin' as it is just turning midnight here. It was 5 years ago this month that i joined the porch, and it truly amazes me how we talk about so many topics at once, yet still seem to be OK with it all and not miss a beat.
We have had the tragedy of Sterling's youth pastor,
grammar rules, patriotism, NN wounds, etc, all covered at the same time. I just wanted to make sure that everyone understands that by not stopping and dwelling on any one thing does not make me any less aware of it. Some topics I dont touch at all, some i comment on only in passing, and some I spend more time on.
Sterling, my prayers are with your whole church family this weekend. Sorry that I didnt say too much about it. God bless you !!

And that goes for the rest of you, too. I don't comment about a lot either. But that doesn't mean I don't care or haven't kept it in my mind.
I was thinking about last night today, about when the accident occurred. And I couldn't help but think that while Kai and I were having fun, playing video tennis together last night, Kai's classmate and little friend was losing her daddy, and will never play together again, at least not in this mortal life God has given us.
Don't mean to sound morbid, but I couldn't help thinking about that.

It did make the time we spent today that much more meaningful.


It just occurred to me from Poor Horatio's post that I never commented about Veteran's Day. That really wasn't intentional. I guess in our day to day lives we sometimes forget to thank those who have made our day to day lives of freedom possible. So I would like to thank ALL the American Veterans, from the revolutionary war to today, for what you have done and continue to do, to make this the greatest country to live in ever in the history of the world. I don't care if you never served in a military conflict - the point is you answered the call - or if you were a desk jockey at some base in the sticks, you all had an important role to play and a purpose.
Just as all of God's children have their own special purpose. We may not understand or even like what that purpose is, but God is the designer of our lives, and He knows what is good for us, even if we don't.

Ok, it is almost 2 a.m. now so I'd better get some rest before I pontificate until the next sweep. ;)

Been too busy for much comment but you all are always in my thoughts throughout my day. I am very, very sorry for what Sterling's church family is going through and will pray. I don't think you were being morbid, Sterling, with your thoughts. I think it is really healthy to appreciate what the Good Lord has given us every day that we have with our loved ones. We tend to just take things for granted (its human nature), when we have so much to be thankful for. I think about it often. I was contemplating that very thing just today. Even though I deal with alot of stress in my life, everyone is fairly healthy and we are all together, so it is a good time in our lives. ALSO, I have so many wonderful friends (that means YOU). Love you all.

Jorge and Maria showed up at 9 a.m., and by 9:30 they had dismantled the beds in the guest rooms and wiped down the frames, vacuumed the mattresses, and the baseboards and carpets beneath the beds. They had dusted the blinds and windowsills and were cleaning the windows when I went to check on them. Those two moved through this house like a pair of smiling tornadoes. I was afraid to stand in one spot very long for fear of being dusted, vacuumed or washed. I washed all the sheets and they remade the beds. Maria cleaned my stove (it wasn't really very dirty), they cleaned bathrooms, mopped the kitchen and sunroom tile, and cleaned my big window behind my desk. The only room they didn't invade was my bedroom, except for Jorge using the extension tool on the vacuum to get behind the bigger pieces of furniture. He wanted to take the bed apart and clean the frame like he did in the other rooms, but I stopped him. That mattress alone weighs at least 200 pounds, and I just didn't want to get involved with that. It took four men to set that bed up when it was delivered, so I think it will likely remain right where it is.

George is a wonder. He's built like that bulldog in the old Tom and Jerry cartoons. He's not tall, about 5'6" at the most, but he's powerful. He has huge biceps and thick, broad shoulders, and a little tiny waist and hips by comparison. Come to think of it, maybe he could have handled that bed! Ha! Anyway, they did a wonderful job on this house - it hasn't been this clean in years. Sure is a good feeling. Now I've still got to clean out the closets and cabinets, but it sure feels good knowing that the rest of it is so clean.

I'm very proud of Jorge - his English is really coming along. He's not fluent yet, but it's certainly adequate. He now speaks to me almost entirely in English, and I try to speak to him only in Spanish, and we correct each other's mistakes. All in all, we had a busy day, but we had fun. They made some money and I got a clean house. Not a bad deal.

This evening, I picked up Eloise and we drove out to Keller to see our grandson Landry play baseball. That kid is making a good little player. He's right-handed, but bats lefty. David started him out that way, and plans to let him try to bat right-handed a little later, so he might be a switch-hitter eventually. He hits well as a lefty, really smacks them quite often. He pitches a good fast ball already, at age 8, and has pretty decent aim. Their games are such fun to watch, and it has been a lot of fun watching his team mature from a bunch of little kids who sat on the ground by their base and played with bugs, to really savvy little athletes, in just three years.

Well, I'm off to bed. Preachin' starts at 8:15 in the morning! That's too early, but I'll be there. I'm just grateful that we are still allowed to have services, and that I have the health to get up and go. God is good. --Romeena

A neat story on the news tonight. Made me think of Quiet Sam episode. A local policeman delivered a baby in the back seat of a car.
The man called 911 while taking his wife to the hospital. She was having the baby! He pulled into a church parking lot, a patrol car pulled in, the policeman ran up to the car and shortly thereafter.. bingo, a ten pound baby boy!
Labor to delivery...about 50 minutes!

Boo-That is one thing I love about the cooler/colder temps. I'd much rather put on a sweatshirt than walk around in shorts and t-shirt. I don't know why but I just love it when it's colder out.

Hey Auh2o, no need to go into details buddy. Just wanting to make sure you are well. We all have our burdens in life to carry. And it is a true blessing to be able to share one anothers burdens to help lighten their load. And I believe we can do that with out needing to know what those burdens are. And the greatest joy is knowing we can take our burdens to the Lord and He will bless us and loosen our loads. And what a blessed reassurance we can have in knowing He will not burden us beyond our abilities to endure them. Not really sure why I'm saying all this Auh2o. I know you know it. I guess I just feel impressed to speak it this morning. Forgive me if I am stepping beyond my bounds.

Hey Rev, I remember an episode of Frasier where Martin talks Frasier and Niles into going to his favorite Steakhouse. I think it was called the TimberMill or something like that. Anyway Frasier and Niles show up in suit and ties and get their ties cut off. It's pretty funny. We have a steakhouse here we go to. Best steaks and prime rib in town. Called the Timbermine. Each table is kind of set up like a small ore car. Great food, but I don't think they would cut yer tie off. LOL

I know what you mean about a sweatshirt. I used to have this old, kind of beat-up dark blue sweatshirt from "Old Navy" and it was big and comfortable. I would just wait for the occasional day that I could wear it...didn't happen often enough and now it's lost. I do love wearing shorts and tshirts, though.

Well, have to get going and take Michelle to the bus station so she can head for Dallas. Hope she does well there. Thank you for your prayers on her behalf.:-)

I was takin a trip out to L.A.

So I ordered up a beer and sat down at the bar

He looked at me and I dern near died
And I decided that I'd just wait outside
So I laid a dollar on the bar and headed for the door.

Just when I thought I'd get outta there with my skin
These 3 big dudes come strollin in
With one old drunk chick and some fella with green teeth.

Now the last thing I wanted was to get into a fight
In Jackson Mississippi on a Saturday night
Especially when there was three of them and only one of me.

I was almost to the door when the biggest one
Said, "You tip your hat to this lady, son!"
And when I did, all that hair fell out from underneath.

They all started laughin and I felt kinda sick
And I knew I better think of something pretty quick

November 17, 2009 - Msg 76158: Good evening, porch! My goodness - all these lyrics, and neighbettes growing up, and runaways coming home, and prayers needed here and there, and temperatures dropping (it's 48 here) and such - I just love this porch!

Left work this morning, went by the grocery store (tired but had no choice), came home and put things away, then fell into bed and enjoyed a 3-hour coma. Got up and started preparations for this evening. A friend arrived an hour early to help, and by 6:30 we had 18 women in here, tables loaded with small toys, socks, underwear, crayons, hair ribbons, bouncy balls, little bags of hard candy, toothbrushes and toothpaste, and I don't know what all else. The big island in the kitchen was full of food, none of which I had to prepare. All I supplied was the tea and sodas. We ate, laughed, filled the plastic shoeboxes, laughed some more, and generally had a wonderful time. By 9 p.m. about 70 filled boxes had been loaded into our SS teacher's van, the money for the shipping had been obtained, all the food was packed up and taken away (my request), and my house looked like no one had been here. These women are awesome! In the spring we will do something similar, but instead of gift boxes for children in Third World countries, we'll fill baskets to be used by our Apartment Ministry at the church. The baskets will contain soap, washcloths, dish soap, tooth brushes and paste, maybe a bag of cookies or candy, a pen and tablet, pot scrubbers - just whatever a newly-moved-in person might need. It's good fellowship, we enjoy it, and we hope it sheds the light of the Lord in a few dark places.

Toye Starr was in her element. All those women, oohing and aahing over her, carrying her around, talking babytalk to her, she absolutely loved it, the little brat. She'll mope for an hour or so now, then will be her happy little self again.

As for me, I'm about to put my weary bones in the bed. It was a lovely evening, but I am TIRED! So off to the ironing board I go. Be blessed, everyone. Be safe, those who are traveling. --Romeena

Yeah, those lyrics had me thrown for a loop as well, Boo.

Youth pastor's funeral is tomorrow. Kai won't be going with us. She quite grown-up-like told us she doesn't think she is ready for it, and I think we will respect her thoughts on this one. I don't know of too many adults who are too crazy about funerals, so I imagine it would be quite a heavy experience for an 9 yr old.

I went to the evening service this past Sunday, and was actually surprised to see our main pastor(the youth pastor's father) and his wife, as well as the wife and kids of the youth pastor, at the service. our pastor didn't give a sermon, as there was a missionary from Wales there who gave his presentation, but he did do the announcements; sang the hymns; and even lightened the mood a little bit with some humor, as he has been known to do normally.
I know I would be devastated if my child had died just days before, and I don't know if I could be as strong as he was.
All I could think of as I watched him during the service, was that there is a man who knows where he is going. And who knows who is going to be there when he gets there!
I would pray that God gives that whole family the strength to get through tomorrow, but I think He already has.


On a more secular note, I just noticed that the guy who was in a scene in the episode of CHIPS that I am watching, is none other than TAGS own, Ed Sawyer! A little older, and not as strange acting. :)

November 17, 2009 - Msg 76161: Sounds like fun, Ro! Bless you for hosting such a worthy cause. Speaking of, guess what? Well, the drug rehab where I hold bible study is pretty generic, no extras and not alot of funds for anything and we try to do something for them for Christmas because they are away from home and family and in such a depressing atmosphere. Well, since it is mostly Keith and I trying to do everything now, we weren't sure what we could pull of this year. Turns out my neice-in-law (Emily's mom) suggested to one of her church women's groups that they take on the rehab as their Christmas project this year. She goes to one of those mega-churches with thousands of members and the group that wants to help has about 80 ladies. So...Keith and I have to figure out what to ask them to do for the kids. We thought about a big party with lots of food, maybe some stockings to give out...any suggestions would be appreciated. Hey, maybe that shoebox idea would work for the kids in the rehab...they could contain some home-baked cookies and treats and some small gifts. The problem is that there are so many things they aren't allowed to have, so we have to be creative. You can't give them anything they can take apart and cut themselves with, for one thing, and you would be surprised how many things are off-limits.

Well, went shopping with Bruce again and got in a little argument. He is driving me crazy trying to get into my business! I think it's a woman's place to decorate the home and he is far to involved with the choices I am trying to make. It is not causing good "karma" around here, so he told me he would back off and let me make decisions and he will be happy with whatever I choose. I'm glad he cares about how the house is decorated, but when you have two people, with some different tastes trying to make those decisions, it can get ugly. ;-)

Well, watched "Once Upon a Time in the West", with Bronson and a very mean Henry Fonda tonight. Strange movie...wish i hadn't seen it. I just love Henry Fonda and only like to see him when he's the good guy.

Today was a busy day! I had Emily and that is always an experience. She dumped out about 3,000,000 crayons on the floor and couch, spilled a full glass of milk, and tried to kick me while I was changing her diapers!...toddlers! Of course the two big kisses she gave me made up for it. Man, she has the advantage of being the cutest kid on the planet and gets away with murder most of the time. I think i am finding out what it feels like to be a grandma.:-)

Better get to bed...As they say in Texas, "I am plum wore to a nub!"
